• He had chosen to reduce poverty because
  He had a feeling that very few people are
  really serious about reaching the goal of
  halving poverty by 2015.
• Started poverty reduction in 1974 after
  witnessing the effects of the 1974
  Bangladesh famine.

History of Yunus’s Social Venture
• Started his works in poverty reduction by
  issuing small loans to women in the village of
  Jobra in 1976
• Secured various loans from different banks to
  lend to the poor.
• Grameen Bank began operations fully in 1983
  based on the foundation work done by Yunus.
Impact of the social venture
• More projects for the poor were further created
  after the development of the Grameen Bank.
• Cell-phone ownership was brought to 260,000
  rural poor in over 50,000 villages in March 1997.
• Inspired similar efforts in a hundred countries
  throughout the developing world and even in
  industrialized nations, including the United States
