Mohammad Yunus founded Grameen Bank in 1983 to provide microloans to poverty-stricken individuals in Bangladesh. Through field work in villages, he discovered that many workers were trapped in cycles of poverty and debt due to inability to access credit. He began lending small amounts to individuals and saw success, which led to the development of microcredit and microloans as an anti-poverty strategy. Grameen Bank has since grown tremendously, with over 8 million borrowers served across Bangladesh. 2. Introduction
Born on 28th June, 1940,
His mother was known to help anyone poor that knocked
on their door
Yunus’ biggest influence, inspiring him to commit his life
to the eradication of poverty.
Studied economics in the Vanderbilt University, USA, and
received his Ph.D in Economics in 1970

3. Formation of Grameen
Taught Economics in University of Chittatong, and took his
students for a field trip to Jobra Village
Upon studying the secondary workers there, he discovered
many of them were stuck in a financial trap, unable to make
enough profit to buy resources, and resorting to loan sharks to
pay for resources, further reducing profits
He then decided to act as a guarantor for the bank to loan these
workers money, and even started a savings program, leading
to the concept of micro-loans, small loans for each worker to
climb out of this trap.

In Bangladesh today, Grameen has 2,564 branches, with
19,800 staff serving 8.29 million borrowers in 81,367
villages
On any working day Grameen collects an average of $1.5
million in weekly installments
Over 97% of the loans are paid back, a recovery rate higher
than any other banking system
