Muhammad Yunus was born in 1940 in Bangladesh and became an economist. In 1974, after a famine, he began giving small loans to poor people without collateral to start businesses. He founded Grameen Bank in 1983 to provide microloans to the poor, especially women. Through microloans, Yunus created an innovative approach for providing credit to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans and helped many escape poverty. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his work in microcredit and economic development.
