Coral reefs are large areas of plants and animals (choice B) that grow in shallow tropical waters. They contain invertebrates called polyps that have exoskeletons and grow slowly. Coral reefs are brightly colored due to algae living inside the polyps. They need sunlight for the algae to photosynthesize. Tropical fish live among the reefs for shelter and food. When water temperatures rise due to global warming, the algae leave the polyps, causing the reefs to lose their color and turn pale white in a process known as coral bleaching.
3. • Read and listen: what is a coral reef? Choose
the best answer.
• A- a brightly colored plant
• B- a large area of plants and animals
• C-invertebrates that grow slowly and do not
move
11. • Read again and answer
• 1- why do coral reefs have bright colors?
• 2- why do coral reefs need sunlight?
• 3- why do tropical fish live in coral reefs?
12. Read and match
1-exoskeleton A-Not deep ; in the sea or a river , the
water does not go down very far
2-algae B-No color: you can see through it
3-organism C-A skeleton that is on the outside of an
invertebrate’s body
4-clear D-Very simple organisms that live in water

• Pre-reading
• What causes coral bleaching?
• Why is coral bleaching a problem?
• Why are the red sea coral reefs different?
17. What is coral bleaching?
• At the moment , the seas and oceans on Earth
are getting warmer. This is because of global
warming.
• When the water temperature rises, the algae
inside the coral polyps leave . the algae give
the coral reef its bright colors.so , when the
algae leave, the reef is pale and white. This is
called coral bleaching
