The adaption of character James Douglas Stark – known as Starkie, a non–fictional war serviceman
– becomes a conflict for the omnipresence of nationalism in New Zealand literature of the 1930s.
Robin Hyde adopts a realist approach to James Mulgan's Man Alone; by developing the article
'Starkie' Outlaw of N.Z.E.F. into the novel Passport to Hell. Passport to Hell is used to defer from
the standard "Kiwi bloke" stereotype, by retelling Starkie's – a man who was not typically a hero –
war experience. Starkie does not fit the stereotypes of either Māori or Pākehā, allowing Hyde to go

Denis Glover and Frank Sargeson. Hyde breaks the Marxist stereotype of a heroic masculine figure
in Passport to Hell because Starkie is a character who exemplifies perversity. Hyde provoked

heroin executed in literature. This representation is evident in language and Starkie's interactions,
with characters such as Captain Smythe. Diction in this interaction labels Starkie as an "outsider" at

Otago, no soldier, and a bloody pest" (Hyde, 114). Furthermore, Captain Dombey labels Starkie as
"the biggest, laziest, rottenest, most troublesome" (Hyde, 141) because of the associations with his
skin colour and behaviour. Although Dombey admits Starkie is one of the best soldiers he has ever
had in the trenches (Hyde, 141). Hyde is clearly an example of the colonial dilemma in literature,
and as a result her work never received the attention it deserved (Bertram, 16). Critics and fellow

Theatre is not only presented as a piece of art, but as a tool of social reform to express the feelings

On March 4, 1921, an unknown soldier from World War I was buried with the approval of Congress

was eliminated in Europe, and the other casket had the remains of a soldier that was eliminated in
the Pacific. Medal of Honor recipient Hospital Corpsman First Class William R. Charette had the
honor of choosing the remains to be sent to Arlington National Cemetery. As a result, the other

Going from the military life to being a civilian can put a financial hardship on the family mostly if
the servicemen are unable to find work when they get out of the military. The family is then forced

how they helped them make ends meet.
In the military, servicemen are used to getting money for their food, rent, and clothing. Every month
in the military depending on your rank, you get B.H.A. This stands for Basic Housing Allowance.
The higher rank you are the more money you get. So in a sense you are living rent free and can

Then you get B.A.S which stands for Basic allowance for subsistence. Now this is a set amount.
There is a single amount and a married amount. This money is used for groceries each month. The

They are the ones who risked their lives, their careers, and their families so that others could
experience what it truly means to be an American. Military men used to be the "talk of the town,"
everyone wanted to know them and claim them in their lives, but nowadays people want to discard

universal national service (more commonly known as the draft) is quite controversial. Advocates for
the draft argue that the drafting of eligible Americans is necessary to preserve a strong military that
is capable of protecting the U.S. from possible attacks, as well as instilling a sense of national pride

As mentioned above, military officials see the draft as unnecessary. In addition to these officials,
public opposition to the draft is growing. According to a survey, 80 percent of Americans opposed
the draft in 2007 (Text 5, graphic). If the majority of the country opposes something that would
directly affect its youth, then that something should not be reinstituted. Public opinion on the
reinstitution of the draft reflects the opposition that would be present if it were reinstituted. Draft–
eligible Americans would most certainly try to find a way out of military service, as draftees have
done in the past. But because the public opinion on the draft has shifted dramatically since 1980,
where 59 percent of Americans were in favor of the draft, the resentment associated with serving
would most likely be higher (Text 5, graphic). This resentment is almost inevitable, especially with
pro–draft arguments claiming the need to serve in the military in exchange for citizenship rights
(Text 1, line 61). Rights granted by citizenship should not have requirements in order to make use of
them; that is why one is granted these rights with U.S. citizenship and not after serving in the
military. Not only are citizens' rights at stake, but also the right to education. Bill Maxwell argues
