He is considered one of the central
founders of the science of
thermodynamics. By his restatement
of Sadi Carnot's principle known as
the Carnot cycle, he put the theory of
heat on a truer and sounder basis.
3. Family Background
• Rudolf was brought up in a large family, being the
sixth of his father's sons. He attended his father's
school for a few years and then moved to a
Gymnasium in Stettin where he remained until he
had completed his schooling in 1840. One of his
brothers, Robert Clausius, said this quote about
Rudolph
“The greatest confidence and trust were placed in
him. His judgement was highly valued.”
4. Education & Achievements
• Rudolph went to the University of Berlin to
study physics where he became interested
in founding Thermodynamics.
• Clausius received the Iron Cross in 1871
for his services to the German campaign.
