2. Abstract
This paper aims to analyse the reading habit
of the Srimad Andavan Arts & Science College
(Autonomous) Students, including purpose of
reading the dailies, time spent, languages
preferred, most preferred newspaper… etc in the
form of structured questionnaire was sent to UG
students, PG students, M.Phil and Ph.D research
scholars. The Major finding of the study is most
of the respondents opined that they prefer to
read the Tamil daily and particularly job
opportunities column.

3. Introduction
In this age of information, newspaper is
the most powerful tool to express ideas and
information. It is a part and parcel of modern
life. It is playing a vital role by providing
information and creating awareness among
the people. It keeps us informed about the
current affairs of the whole world. In absence
of newspaper, we cannot have a true picture
of our environment.

6. Objectives of this study
• To identify the preferred language of the users to
read the dailies
• To analyse the sources used to read the dailies
• To know how much time is spent for reading the
dailies
• To know the frequency of reading the dailies
• To analyse which columns are read most by the
students
• To know which newspaper is mostly read by the
students
• To know the purpose of newspaper reading

7. Methodology
A structured questionnaire is used for the
primary data collection. A total of 150
questionnaires were distributed in person and
online and 128 filled in questionnaires were
obtained from the users. The user population
is defined as UG students, PG students, M.Phil
Students and Research Scholars of Srimad
Andavan Arts and Science College
(Autonomous), Trichy.

The collected data are analysed by using
statistical method and tabulated with percentage.

respondents, UG students are (31.25%), PG students are
(51.56%), M.Phil Scholars are (11.71%) and Ph.D Scholars are

The above table shows that 74.21% of students prefers to read Tamil
language newspapers, 25.78% of students prefers English language
newspapers and 05.46% of them prefer both the languages. Most of the
respondents prefer Tamil newspapers only.

18. Findings
• Most of the students are male and are PG students.
• Most of the respondents preferred the Tamil dailies
• Majority of respondents are using the college library to
access newspapers and most of them spend less than
an hour to read the dailies.
• Majority of the respondents use the newspapers
everyday
• Major numbers of students prefer to read job
opportunities column in the newspapers.
• Most of the users want to read Dinathanthi newspaper.
• Most of the respondents read the dailies to earn
awareness on day to day affairs

Even though Information and Communication
Technology is developed nowadays, the newspaper plays an
important role to inform the people on the happening
around the world. Due to enormous information explosion,
lot of newspapers published in different languages is
available in print and online. The library is unable to
subscribe all the newspapers published as national and
international levels but the library can disseminate the
important articles like Science and Technology, job
opportunities… etc through their notice board. Adequate
newspapers to be subscribed in each and every library to
keep their users abreast with the latest information and to
enhance their reading habits
