Viruses are not considered living organisms because they are not made of cells and lack the cellular structure that defines life. While viruses evolve and are able to reproduce by infecting living cells, they cannot reproduce outside of a host cell and rely on the host cell for replication, making them dependent on the machinery and metabolism of the host cell rather than having their own independent metabolism.
