Tips on Discovery Searching
A. Paraphrasing Techniques:
“marketsegmentation”
B. Truncation Techniques:
brand* (--brand @ brands @
branding)
catalog$ (--catalog @
catalogue)
C. Wildcard Techniques:
col#r (-- colour @ color)
Wom?n (--woman @ women)
Truncation is a searching technique used in
databases in which a word ending is replaced by a
symbol.Frequently used truncation symbols
include the asterisk (*), a questionmark (?) or a
dollar sign ($).
Wildcards can be useful when searching for
information because they enable differentforms or
spelling of a word to be searched simultaneously.
Frequently used wildcard symbols include the
questionmark (?), the pound/hatch symbol (#) or
the asterisk (*).
Boolean/Phrase search mode is the default
proximity setting. The search mode is N5 (near 5).
If you want to search for an exact phrase when
proximity is set to N5, quotation marks are
necessary.
