1. Gender
I have decided to look at Q’s target audience to compare to my own
as they are practically identical. I found with my audience research
that there was a 50/50 split between males and females. However
this was slightly bias as I only had a small sample providing me with
results so it is not a true representative result that I would achieve
with maybe a larger , more varied sample. Therefore, by looking at
Q; my inspiration, I found that there results had shown 68.3% of men
read Q appose to only 31.7% of females. This then allowed me to
draw firm conclusions
about who my target
audience would be as I
knew that for Q it has
been shown that more
males read it. This
influenced my choices
For elements such as c
colour scheme and font
styles.
Age
Q’s research shows that
the most popular age
bracket for people who
read Q are 15-24 years
old. However there is
still a large amount of
25-44 year old readers. Therefore, because my audience research was
only from a small sample I decided to take Q’s research into
consideration. However, I found similar results. My audience research
found that 16-18 year olds were more likely to read magazines , also
magazines were read up to the age of 30. This made me question my
original ideas on how I wanted my magazine to be really mature and
sophisticated. In the end I decided to try and make it mature but
without trying to not appeal to my young adult target audience. I did
this by including fun and exciting imagery and made the interview
something a young adult would be interested in reading.
Class
A = Upper middle class B = Middle class C1 = Lower middle class
My target audience was originally for generally middle class, however,
whilst researching I found that there was different types of middle
class and each was represented by the NRS social grade. I then
discovered Q’s readers were 70% ABC1 profile class . This then
influenced me to do the same. Therefore my target audience for class
is upper middle class (higher managerial, administrative or
professional), middle class (intermediate managerial, administrative or
professional) and lower middle class (supervisory or clerical and junior
managerial, administra-
tive or professional. This
means that the target
audience is of a high
class considering that
only 2% of the worlds
population is identified
as upper class. This
indicates a professional,
high standard magazine.
Psychographs
I have considered the
personality, values,
attitudes, interests and
lifestyle of my target
audience. This allows me
to directly link specific
details to my target audience and draw them in to read my magazine
individually. My magazine is directed to people who have similar
factors named above E.g.: personality, values, interests. This means
that all the people can sort of form together and it creates a
population of individuals all thriving for the magazine and there
opinions. E.g. They all are interested in festivals and gigs. Maslow's
hierarchy of needs diagram is also relevant as my target audience
would sit in the self esteem stage as they have confidence in going
towards the minority instead of the majority E.g. Pop music.
