An Engineered Wonder of the World
An Engineered Wonder of the World "This bridge needs neither praise, eulogy nor encomium. It speaks for itself. We who have labored long are
grateful. What Nature rent asunder long ago, man has joined today." This is a quote from Joseph Strauss, the engineer that designed the Golden
Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is truly a piece of engineering excellence. It stretches for almost 9,000 feet over the San Francisco Bay, in San
Francisco, California. The bridge has faced many problems during the designing process, construction, and even to this day it produces controversy.
The final result of the bridge, however, is an amazing engineering feat that will be around for a long time. To begin, in 1916, James H. Wilkins had the

The rest of the pressure is supported by the cables. These vertical cables receive the bridge`s tension forces. The Golden Gate Bridge is a
"textbook" suspension bridge (Lamb, Robert, and Michael Morrissey). Thus, with all of the designs and made, the Golden Gate Bridge was ready
to be built. To continue, it was January 5th, 1933, when construction officially started on the bridge. The two anchorages of the bridge were the
first parts to be built. The first of the two to be built was on the San Francisco side of the bay. The other on the Marin side of the bay. The San
Francisco tower access trestle was then started. It extended for more than 1,000 feet off shore. Unfortunately, a major setback was met on August
14, 1943. On this date, a steamship crashed into the access trestle, and damaged almost 400 feet. The repairs were not completed for another four
months. Then to make matters worse, the trestle was battered again, but for 800 feet of damage this time. Another four months were needed for
these repairs. Next up was the Marin tower. As previously stated, suspension bridges have two towers, and this was the first of the two built. There
were no problems faced in the construction of the tower, and it was completed in about a year. The San Francisco tower was built next. Then the
cables were put on, and finally on November 18th, 1936, the two sections of the bridge were joined in the middle. After this, the roadway was finally
put in. On

Ancient Wonders of the World
The ancient wonders of the world are seven such sights that were constructed around the first and second century but do not exist in the present
day. During the fourth century, the Greeks had conquered sufficient land in Persia, Egypt and Babylon which gave writers access to travel these
areas freely. The Greek writers would note down any interesting sights that they saw and would make lists of them, and although today, we see
these seven wonders as just one list, in reality, there were several lists of monuments and sights as a whole on all the lists, but the ones that were
common on most are considered to be the world's ancient wonders. The oldest of the ancient wonders is the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is believed
by historians that this pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu and took about 20 years for its construction to be concluded in 2560 BC. Records
show that it is 756 feet long on each side and its vertical height is 450 feet tall. Around a hundred thousand slaves were employed and 2,300,000
blocks were used, one block being heavy to the extent that 112 men would be needed to lift just one individual block. The interior architecture of the
pyramid consists of three chambers, one being for the King, the other for the Queen and one being a Grand Gallery. The pyramid's entrance is 17
meters above ground level from where there is a descending passage continued by an ascending passage several meters later. This pyramid is the only
ancient wonder which is largely intact

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Seven Wonders of the Ancient World The Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations were some of the greatest civilizations in human history. The Greeks
and the Romans had many interests and pursuits. These are cultures that placed a great deal of value in aesthetics and architecture. There are in fact
many structures and artifacts that have survived from those civilizations. The Greek and Romans pursued and appreciation what they believed to be
aesthetic and mathematical perfection. In the ancient world, these civilizations agreed upon seven examples of perfection, which we now know as the

. The paper will provide a brief examination of the wonders and provide insight as to why they were and are
considered so wonderful. The phrase "Seven Wonders of the World" was coined in approximately the first and second centuries BC. The "seven
wonders" refer to seven examples of architecture and art that the Romans and Greeks considered to be as close to perfection as could be reached on
Earth by their standards. The seven wonders of the ancient world are as follows: The Great Pyramid of Giza; The Hanging Gardens of Babylon; The
Statue of Zeus at Olympia; The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus; The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus; The Colossus of Rhodes; and The Lighthouse of
Alexandria. All of the seven wonders are in the Mediterranean, Asia Minor, Eurasia, and North Africa. Thus, though they are called the seven wonders

Falls are known to be 12000 years old!!! the falls were first discovered by a man named dr. Roy Spencer in early 1678. Have you ever wondered if
anyone has went over or down the falls and survived well a woman by the name of Anne Taylor, she is the bravest cause I would never do that.

The History Of Egypt And The Seven Wonders Of The World
Egypt is a fascinating country with a long and dark history. Many historical events have taken place in Egypt ranging from 4000 BCE through the
present. Egypt also plays a major role in the biblical aspect in history as well. Significant achievements from Imhotep; a remarkable architect and
physician, to Moses freeing the slaves from the Pharos. Pyramids that were built between 2700 BCE – 2500 BCE remain one of the Seven Wonders of
the World and still stand today.Egypt has been ruled by many and suffered through many conflicts. Through the preservation of sculptures, architectural
designs, and human intelligence Egypt shows to be a culture of its own; and different from many.
Egypt, a country in the North East part of Africa covers an area of 1,001,450 square kilometers (386,599 square miles) having no territories. Located

The Wonders Of The Invisible World Chapter Summary
Throughout time, historians have relied on first person encounters to accurately depict the world and the people at a certain time. Cotton Mather's,
The Wonders of the Invisible World, does exactly that by giving the reader a perspective into the Salem witch trials as well as a first person view
from Mather himself. Through this work, Mather shares his opinions on the actions taken in the trials and the works of the Devil and God inside of
New England. During this time period, religion played a significant part in society such that it was a driving force behind the hysteria created. This
hysteria doesn't seem to reach Mather, but rather he seems to be compelled to write due to his pre–existing concern for society against the Devil and
witchcraft. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems to be that Mather makes this deduction with guidance from his observations and is his driving force behind writing Wonders. He feels as
though the Devil is running rampant through the colony that he has poured his heart into and also that it is a personal attack against him. Even
though he understands everything that is taking place, he doesn't have the power as a single person to destroy it. All of this comes as though
Mather knew this would happen to the colony at a certain point. This preface can be seen when Mather begins to discuss how the Ephesians were
rejoicing in God's gospel and the Devil began to try and dismantle all of their joy (151). The whole situation seems to be a prophetic experience for
Mather which leads to him realizing how rooted the Devil is in his colony and the destruction that he is causing. He later goes on to state that, "the
devil has made a dreadful knot of witches in the county" implying, once again, the rooted aspect of the Devil (152). This expresses one of the true
characteristics of why Mather brought Wonders to life; he wants people to understand the true magnitude of what is happening and the reason behind

Fifth Business Character Analysis
The impact of childhood events determines one's character in the course of one's life. This is particularly true in the life of the principal characters of
Robertson Davies' Fifth Business, where one incident, the throwing of a snowball, decides the future of Boy, Dunstan, and Paul. Whether or not a
person can move beyond his past has a profound effect on individuals as they age. In the novel, psychological well–being during childhood
development is one of the central themes that shapes the characters. Boy Staunton, who is born into the richest family in the town of Deptford, grows
from an irresponsible and spoiled boy to an ambitious and arrogant tycoon. His character epitomizes the way many rich people behave when they are
unwilling to accept... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For that other two characters, they change their names subtly, adjusting the personalities in their names from their parents. (Beetz). However, Paul
becomes Magnus Eisengrim who completely disconnects with his family and has himself reinvented as he runs away with a circus to escape from the
contrition and jeers that are none of his business. At Paul's early age, Dunstan, who is "contrite and guilty" (Davies 11) for Paul's premature birth, acts
as his playmate, reading to him about and teaching him magic, which leads him to his new life. As a "not[–]ten[–]yet" child (Davies 107), he is fully
confident of the fact that his circumstance has condemned him to move beyond it. He takes such a firm action and courageous decision that later
Dunstan wonders how he comes "by this new self" (Davies 202), which remains a mystery to Dunstan. When Dunstan is hired to write a fictional
autobiography of Magnus's, he says about the book and Magnus's character that "[t]he autobiography of Magnus Eisengrim was a great pleasure to
write, for I was under no obligation to be historically correct or weigh evidence." (Davies 229). Finally, Magnus manages to step forward in his
course of life from an innocent son considered guilty to a world–famous magician going on his world tours. At the end of the novel, Magnus's magic is
implicated to be the murderer of Boy, and this makes himself becomes "the inevitable fifth, who was keeper of his conscience and keeper of the stone."
(Davies 266). Compared with the other two characters, he is the best at surmounting difficulties and stay psychologically healthy, whereas Boy
Staunton cannot accept the fact that his fault leads to Mary Dempster's early labour. Magnus manages to minimize the negative impact of his past on
him although he sometimes ties himself to the way he thinks during his childhood such as having a grudge or feeling insecure. His

What am I supposed to do? When I first arrive, I look at the outside of the building. "Star–books coo–fe–fe–ee?" Hmm.. I wonder what this place will

something significant. I use my translator device to decipher my questions. It informs me that this is a common social place for the Earthlings. This is

so I pull out my notes, and begin to document what I see. It is important that I look at these things from the human perspective, because if I continue
to compare it to my own land, I will not fully understand why they live the way they do. The first assignment was to gather data about the
architecture and layout of the place. I notice that everything is pretty dark, with natural colors. Even the people who come inside are wearing colors of
the same pallet. The lights are pretty dim, which sets the mood to be calm and relaxing. The main counter is in the far corner, and there is a group of
humans beind it hustling around working. The ceilings are high, and the windows do bring in some natural light. I especially notice how all the
humans get in a line before they approach the first human worker who is behind the counter. This symbolizes that they have inserted organization into
the system.

The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
Seven Wonders of the Ancient and New World
The world is full of beautiful places but there are some places that are considered from the wonders of the world. These places and buildings were
named as the seven wonders of the ancient world. Herodotus, A Greek historian, wrote about these wonders thousands of years ago. At this time, he
thought that these buildings were the greatest structures in the world and he made a list of these places and called it the Seven Wonders of The Ancient
World. A wonder is a structure created by something strange and amazing; when we see it, we say that it is rare and unexpected. Although there are
several wonders in the world, there are seven that are recognized as being ancient.
Tom Jackson, in his book The SevenWonders of The World, has written that the great pyramids of Egypt; they are the most ancient and historical
place in Egypt, were built in Giza. These pyramids are very old, they have been there for over four thousand years. It is believed that the shape of
these pyramids symbolized the prehistoric knoll from which they believed life emerged. The big sizes of these pyramids symbolize the power and the
greatness of their country back in that days.
Another structure that considered also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. They are also known as
the hanging gardens of Semiramis. Nebuchadnezzar II IN 200 BCE, wanted to please his beloved wife Semiramis so he built these gardens. The

Analysis Of Wonders Of The Invisible World By Cotton Mather
The short story, "Wonders of the Invisible World" by Cotton Mather, tells of how the devil is working around Boston. He tells this story from his
own perspective in which he believes the devil is working in secret, and through the youth. One of the trials used as an example was Martha Carrier
who was found guilty based on the information collected by Cotton Mather. Nathaniel Hawthorne, writer of the famous "Scarlet Letter", writes a short
story from the narrator's perspective, and how he visits his friend called "Oberon." Oberon believes that the devil is residing within his writing and
insists to the narrator that he must burn the manuscript to cast the devil out. The evidence that leads Oberon to believe that the devil is in his writing
draws from publishers refusing to accept his work. In "Wonders of the Invisible World", Mather suggests the devil resides in people who collect in
"hellish meetings" where they discuss how to "destroy the kingdom on out lord Jesus Christ." He uses Martha Carrier as an example of someone
who is possessed by the devil and seeks to corrupt others and do harm to those who follow God. He provides evidence by bringing witnesses to
Carrier's torment, including her children. How the devil is portrayed in "The Devil in the Manuscript" is more figurative rather than literal. Oberon
believes the devil possessed his writing because no one wants to publish what he wrote. This is likely less literal than what Cotton Mather means,
and is likely attributed from his ego and belief that his writing is too great to be his fault. The portrayal of the devil within the "Wonders of the
Invisible World" is literal, and is inspired through fear and incredibly strict devotion to one religion. Cotton Mather believes the devil is literally
possessing people and using those he possesses to corrupt others. He uses Martha Carrier as an example of how the devil will do this by bringing in her
children to the trial. The children confessed on trial that "not only that they were witches themselves, but that their mother had made them so." This
helped strengthen Mather's argument that the devil is working through people to corrupt others. The children's confession also helped give support to
Mather's theory

Worlds Of Wonder In The Northern Colonies Summary
In David D. Hall's essay Worlds of Wonder in the Northern Colonies and T.H. Breen's Worlds of Goods in the Northern Colonies; the argument of
the settler's views or main objective on the land is put to question. David D. Hall supports the idea that religion was deeply rooted in the early settlers
while T.H. Breen supports the idea that the early Americans only concern was becoming an "empire of goods." While the two hold factual evidence to
this argument, David D. Hall proves to be the most reliable due to its religious reliability of tradition.

While doing so, with every misery she experienced she connected her experience with a passage from the bible. "When we were come, Oh the

Analysis of The Wonders of the Invisible World In this primary document, Cotton Mather, a Puritan theologian, writes about his fears of losing the
entire country to the devil and his minions as the Christian religion, in his mind, is being slowly eradicated from the entire country due to witchcraft.
In 1693 Cotton Mather wrote a literary piece called The Wonders of the Invisible World a year after questionable events in defense of the persecutions

1303 and 1323, reduced it to rubble. In 1994, underwater archaeologists located some of the remains of the lighthouse in the Alexandrian Harbor, and
more have recently been located using remote imaging. Some remains of the Pharos were also used in the construction of Fort Qaitbey in the 15th

Contentment reached to its highest peak but eventually turned into a moment of stomping heartbeats as I felt myself go all the way up, up and above.

Natural Wonderss On Natural Wonders In The Medieval Century
Wonders during the medieval era played a vast or minuscule role in engineering. Although people during this time sought to learn and implemented
the wonders found by travel writers others were not so open to this new idea. Which also means that the definition of wonder differed for the courts
and the monasteries. Travel writers such as Marco Polo who reported "Kublai Khan's famous levitating cups" helped raise the discipline of engineering
by helping others built artificial wonders with this information (93). But also during this time with this new information a new distinction between
artisanship and engineering was brought up.Overall medieval topographical and travel literature on natural wonders shaped and raised the discipline of
engineering by giving definition and growth to many European courts.
During the medieval era, courts were influenced by romance literature to further improve their military. The romances of Eneas and the Roman of
de Troie described the wonders of art and ancient courtly engineering. For example in Eneas, Carthage was depicted with walls "made of marble and
adamant painted a hundred colors and topped with three rows of magnets to incapacitate armed attackers" (89). The three rows of magnets, one of the
many wonders described by travel writer during this time, was used as a military tactic to disable armed attackers from proceeding with their attack. In
the tombs of Camilia, a similar tactic was used with magnets moreover a magic mirror was

Review: The Great Barrier Reef
Hi, I'm Matilda and today I will be discussing why the great barrier reef needs more protection than ever.
The Great Barrier Reef is the most abundant and diverse coral ecosystem on Earth. It contains, over 1600 species of fish, 6 out of the 7 species of
marine turtles in the world, 215 species of birds, and more than 3000 species of shells. This rich and diverse range of species needs to be protected
no matter the cost. The reef is also the only living organisms that can be seen from space. If we want any other life out there to see us, surely we
want to be remembered by our beautiful and vibrant reef, not by dull and repetitive skyscrapers. It is even one of the seven natural wonders of this
world along side Mount Everest.

Global warming also causes extreme weather events such as cyclones and extreme rainfall. This can weaken and destroy the reef structure and also
brings more sediment into the reef which can be detrimental to the reefs overall survival
Global warming is caused by us. As we continue to put fuels in our cars, keep cutting down trees and using excess electricity we are actively hurting
the Great Barrier Reef. As the youth of today we have the tools to speak up and demand more from our government, we must fight for our future, for
our reef. Because, although we are alive to enjoy its ethereal beauty, we must do our part to ensure that future generations will have the same
opportunity to embrace the reef.
The Australian and Queensland government is only investing $200 million annually into the maintenance of the reef. Whereas the government invest

Analysis Of The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
The original seven wonders of the world list is "The Lighthouse at Alexandria, The Great Pyramid at Giza, The Colossus of Rhodes, The
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon". (The Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World Silverberg) This list can be both problematic and lacking because the reading and the website article both show
different illustrations on what the seven wonders look like. This can be problematic because many people may see different images of them and not
get the right idea of what they look like. This can also be lacking because, the information may not be gathered correctly and give false information on
what they look like. Both sources the reading "The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
" and the online source "Ancient.eu/ The_Seven_Wonders"
both say different things on where they came from. For example the reading says that the list comes before Christ and a poet Antipater drew up the
list and the online source says that the list comes from Themala "Greek things to be seen" and was created by Philoof Byzantium. The "Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World" is a list that historians have traced back to the second century BCE. However, when inspected closely, the list appears
to be biased because in the printed source says the list comes from before Christ and a poet Antipater drew up the list. In the online source the list
comes from themata "Greek things to be seen" and were

Puritan Writers : The Wonders Of The Invisible World
Cotton Mather is one of the best known Puritan writers for his work The Wonders of the Invisible World. Mather gives the outside world a
glimpse into what the Salem Witch trials were like and how they conducted their way of figuring out who was a witch in their colony. The
Wonders of the invisible world brought the audiences into the firsthand experience of a trial and made them experience it from the viewpoint of
one of the citizens of that colony. Mather specifically focuses on the trial of Martha Carrier in his work. Mather discusses her trial and how she is
being accuses by Benjamin Abbot of being a witch and giving his own testimony. In order to stay alive characters must go along with the horrible
assumption that some people are witches even if they do not believe it just to stay alive. Events that others see as natural occurrences are being
looked at as acts of Satan by the people in Mather's work. neighbors are turning on each other because they seek something that the other has and can
not find another way to get the piece of land or cattle that they desire. Once someone is accused of being a witch there was no one that would try to
argue with the claim out of fear of facing the same fate as the accused. In the case of Martha Carrier, her own children testified against her and claimed
she was a witch. Mather describes their confessions as "made with great shows of repentance, and with much demonstration of truth" (Mather 331). It

The Great Pyramid : The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
Did you know that there are seven wonders of Ancient Egypt? The seven wonders include, The great pyramid at Giza in Egypt, The hanging Gardens
of Babylon, The statue of Zeus at Olympia in Greece, The temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The colossus of Rhodes,
And The lighthouse at Alexandria in Egypt.
The great pyramid of Giza, The great pyramid of Giza is also known as the pyramid of Khufu or the pyramid of Cheops. It is the oldest and largest of
the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and
the only one to remain largely intact. There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon
which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so–called Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. The
main part of the Giza complex is a setting of buildings that included two mortuary temples in honor of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near
the Nile), three smaller pyramids for Khufu's wives, an even smaller "satellite" pyramid, a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and small
mastaba tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles. The hanging gardens of Babylon, the most popular theory is that the hanging gardens was built by
the king Nebuchadnezzar to make his wife happy. She was home sick for the plants and gardens of her home land. King

Descriptive Essay About Snow Angel
Snow Angel
Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Angelina whose dream was to have a chance at seeing the world and the seven wonders it held. "Perhaps,
someday," she sighed, looking out her bedroom window. For now, the one
–room apartment her family shared with her and someday were enough. For
years, it seemed it would always be.
But, one day, on her way back home from buying salt from the market, a goblin appeared and strolled up to Angelina. He had a smug walk and a smile
that carried malicious intent. Using his charisma, he proposed a bargain. Suddenly, enough was insufficient.
Goblins were not to be trusted, especially those that made deals . . . but, a world of infinite wonders for a morsel of salt seemed generous–too
generous. That's what she said when he asked, but his wild tales about the ecstasy of joy he could gift to her intrigued her.
The goblin began to bounce around, and the grin on his face made Angelina envious. "So, you're turning down the mere proposition of absolute
happiness compared to your dull and mundane life because . . . the fairy tales tell you goblins play tricks?" he questioned. "You're smarter than that,
aren't you?"
"I. . . ." Angelina didn't know what to say.
"You haven't got much time to decide, dearie. I've got plenty of offers waiting on the other side of town, but I thought a lovely lass like you might
need a little bit of cheerin' up." His smirk challenged Angelina. "Well, I ain't got no time for dilly dallyin'," he said, walking

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the first known list of remarkable man

The gardens were destroyed in an earthquake after the 1st century BCE.
The lush Hanging Gardens are extensively documented by Greek historians such as Strabo and Diodorus Siculus. Through the ages, the location may
have been confused with gardens that existed at Nineveh, whose king at the time was Nimrod, since tablets from there clearly show gardens.
Writings on these tablets describe the possible use of something similar to an Archimedes' screw as a process of raising the water to the required
height. The Greek Historian Diodorus (Antipar) said: "The Garden was 100 feet long by 100 feet wide and built up in tiers so that it resembled a
theater. Vaults had been constructed under the ascending terraces which carried the entire weight of the planted garden; the uppermost vault, which
was seventy–five feet high, was the highest part of the garden, which, at this point, was on the same level as the city walls. The roofs of the vaults
which supported the garden were constructed of stone beams some sixteen feet long, and over these were laid first a layer of reeds set in thick tar,
then two courses of baked brick bonded by cement, and finally a covering of lead to prevent the moisture in the soil penetrating the roof. On top of
this roof enough topsoil was heaped to allow the biggest trees to take root. The earth was leveled off and thickly

Fifth Business Character Analysis
Fifth Business is the first book of Robertson Davies' Deptford Trilogy. The novel is a memoir of Dunstable Ramsay, the protagonist, in the form of a
letter to the school's headmaster. Many characters play a huge significant role in Dunstable's life as he develops, however, many of those people are
women. Leading examples of this are Fiona Ramsay, his mother; Mary Dempster, the woman who changed his life; Diana Marfleet, his nurse and
meaningful love; and Liselotte Vitzliputzli, his source of therapy and inspiration. Dunstable's mother is someone who is a salient part of his
development, and shapes him into the person he is later on in the novel. She is determined, strict, controlling, and places herself above God in

She is a source to the development of Dunstable for a couple of reasons. A link emerges between Dunstable Ramsay and Mary when she is hit in
the head with a snowball thrown by Percy Boyd Staunton, which was intended for Dunstable. The snowball that hit Mary causes her to go into
labour, and she gives birth to her premature baby, Paul Dempster. Dunstable is forever filled with guilt although he had no control whatsoever
when the incident occurred. This guilt eventually leads to Dunstable developing feelings for Mary Dempster, even though she is ten years older
than him. His loyalty for Mary Dempster is at the same degree as his mother, or perhaps more. When Dunstable is at the Third Battle of Ypres, he
loses his leg after he takes down German snipers. While Dunstable lies down wounded, he sees Mary Dempster's face on the statue of The Little
Madonna. "But what hit me worse than the blow of shrapnel was that the face was Mrs. Dempster's face". (Davies, 74) Almost half a year after, he
wakes up from a coma in a hospital where he meets his nurse, Diana Marfleet. He recollects what happened during the war and becomes a
hagiographer. This is a significant facet of the person that he grows to be. Furthermore, when Mary Dempster's illness aggravates, aunt Bertha who
was taking good care of her passes away. Aunt Bertha hands Mary's fortune to Dunstable, and he must take legal custody of her as a

original seven wonders of the world are the most worthy of our praise and appreciation as they were constructed in an era that was devoid of any
building machinery and done mostly by hand. The true wonder we can say is artistic, mysterious, magnificent, stunning or in other words it is really a

1.6 Collosus of Rhodes: Collosus of Rhodes was built in 290 BC. Collosus of Rhodes was the colossal statue of the sun god Helios that stood in
the ancient Greek city of Rhodes and was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. After about 56 years it was built, the statue was destroyed by an
earthquake. It fell into the harbor and just the thumb of the statue was visible over the water surface. The king of Egypt offered to rebuild the statue,
but the people of Rhodes refused. This is because they believed Helios himself threw the statue in water in a fit of rage.

Marvels of Today's World.
In the past places and buildings were considered to be the 7 Wonders of the World, each one is so different but all had one thing in common– how
unbelievable and amazing they were. In today's world as well as geographical marvels there are grand engineering projects that have opened up new

Hopefully they won't completely overtake the role of mankind!
Another marvel of the world is medical technology in my opinion. We now have the technology to provide people that have missing limbs with
fake ones so that they can continue on living their lives and enjoy it. This is just incredible. Many infectious diseases such as Chicken Pox,
Malaria, Measles and Tuberculosis have been conquered through vaccines, antibiotics, and improved living conditions. Cancer has become a
more common illness, but treatments have been developed that effectively combat some forms of the disease .We also have the technology to
control abnormal heart rhythms with the use of a pacemaker. I think pacemakers are absolutely fantastic, such a clever idea. Pacemakers have
prolonged people with heart conditions life span and made life easier for them to live. The way a little camera can be inserted into the body to
look at problems/diseases, completely puts me in awe. Also heart and lung transplants are one of the marvels of today's world. This again saves
people's lives. The way that a team of doctors and nurses are able to take out a patient's heart or lung and put in a new one so that they can live is
truly a marvel. Medical technology is just phenomenal and unbelievable. Through technology, millions of lives have been saved and improved
dramatically. This is why I'd consider it to be one of the marvels of today's world.

The Importance Of Characters In Fifth Business
In the novel Fifth Business, characters mark new chapters of their lives by changing their names. Names are used to identify people in society and they
are a symbol of self. The characters, Dunstan, Boy and Paul all change their names, Dunstable to Dunstan, Percy to Boy, and Paul to Magnus. Despite
the characters' attempts to change their names and personalities, Davies reveals that people will always maintain their true identities.
Throughout the novel, Dunstan plays the role of "Fifth Business" even when he embarks onto a new chapter of his life. Dunstan's major role in this
book is revealing to Paul that the cause for his mother's insanity was because Boy threw a snowball with a stone in it that hit his mother. He says,
"Dunstan Ramsay counselled against revelation, but Fifth Business would not hear. 'Yes, guilt. Staunton and I robbed your mother of her sanity' "
(Davies 263). In this quote, Dunstan claims that he is Fifth Business because he provided information that led Paul to kill Boy. Paul was always told
his birth was the cause of his mother's insanity. Her madness is what made him leave Deptford and caused him trouble during his childhood. Later on
in the conversation Dunstan says, "Fifth Business insisted on being heard again. 'Would this jog your memory?' I asked, handing him my old
paperweight." (Davies 264). Dunstan proves he is Fifth Business again by revealing the stone that was placed inside of the snowball. This is very

Fifth Business because he is the one who knows the secret of the hero's birth, or comes to the assistance of the heroine when she thinks all is lost, or
keeps the hermitess in her cell, or may even be the cause of somebody's death if that is part of the plot. (Davies, 227)

Comparing The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World fascinate and baffle the modern world. The list is comprised of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Hanging
Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and
lastly the Lighthouse of Alexandria (history). Ancient civilizations had developed and grown without being as connected as countries in today's society
are. Thus, cultures and societies remained unique from the others. Ancient communities such as the Greek are both similar and different from other
ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians in many ways; some similarities are their interests in geometry and mathematics, having an insular society,
and religious beliefs and some differences are religious structures, art style, and finally government structures. A similarity between the ancient
Egyptians and Greek is the use of what is now known as geometry. It is currently thought that the Egyptians had introduced the earliest fully–developed
base–ten numeration system, this system was introduced around 2700 BCE, and was based. On people having ten fingers (story of mathematics). A
famous document of the time was the Rhind Papyrus, created 1650 BC, and contained information and exercises to show the "Correct method of

until we can gather enough evidence to be positive that yes, these seven wonders of the world did exist. All seven wonders of the world had a
powerful meaning behind them. A temple to worship, statues dedicated to Gods, and even the burial ground of a great King and Queen. King of
Caria Maussollos and his Queen Artemisia were laid to rest in what is known as The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. A tomb that was created by his
Queen Artemisia, likely a place for her to go to grieve the loss of her husband. This mausoleum was built in 353 B.C. around the time of his death. This
beautiful mausoleum was coated with marble filled statues of Greek

An Engineered Wonder Of The World

  • 1. An Engineered Wonder of the World An Engineered Wonder of the World "This bridge needs neither praise, eulogy nor encomium. It speaks for itself. We who have labored long are grateful. What Nature rent asunder long ago, man has joined today." This is a quote from Joseph Strauss, the engineer that designed the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is truly a piece of engineering excellence. It stretches for almost 9,000 feet over the San Francisco Bay, in San Francisco, California. The bridge has faced many problems during the designing process, construction, and even to this day it produces controversy. The final result of the bridge, however, is an amazing engineering feat that will be around for a long time. To begin, in 1916, James H. Wilkins had the idea to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rest of the pressure is supported by the cables. These vertical cables receive the bridge`s tension forces. The Golden Gate Bridge is a "textbook" suspension bridge (Lamb, Robert, and Michael Morrissey). Thus, with all of the designs and made, the Golden Gate Bridge was ready to be built. To continue, it was January 5th, 1933, when construction officially started on the bridge. The two anchorages of the bridge were the first parts to be built. The first of the two to be built was on the San Francisco side of the bay. The other on the Marin side of the bay. The San Francisco tower access trestle was then started. It extended for more than 1,000 feet off shore. Unfortunately, a major setback was met on August 14, 1943. On this date, a steamship crashed into the access trestle, and damaged almost 400 feet. The repairs were not completed for another four months. Then to make matters worse, the trestle was battered again, but for 800 feet of damage this time. Another four months were needed for these repairs. Next up was the Marin tower. As previously stated, suspension bridges have two towers, and this was the first of the two built. There were no problems faced in the construction of the tower, and it was completed in about a year. The San Francisco tower was built next. Then the cables were put on, and finally on November 18th, 1936, the two sections of the bridge were joined in the middle. After this, the roadway was finally put in. On ... • 2. Ancient Wonders of the World The ancient wonders of the world are seven such sights that were constructed around the first and second century but do not exist in the present day. During the fourth century, the Greeks had conquered sufficient land in Persia, Egypt and Babylon which gave writers access to travel these areas freely. The Greek writers would note down any interesting sights that they saw and would make lists of them, and although today, we see these seven wonders as just one list, in reality, there were several lists of monuments and sights as a whole on all the lists, but the ones that were common on most are considered to be the world's ancient wonders. The oldest of the ancient wonders is the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is believed by historians that this pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu and took about 20 years for its construction to be concluded in 2560 BC. Records show that it is 756 feet long on each side and its vertical height is 450 feet tall. Around a hundred thousand slaves were employed and 2,300,000 blocks were used, one block being heavy to the extent that 112 men would be needed to lift just one individual block. The interior architecture of the pyramid consists of three chambers, one being for the King, the other for the Queen and one being a Grand Gallery. The pyramid's entrance is 17 meters above ground level from where there is a descending passage continued by an ascending passage several meters later. This pyramid is the only ancient wonder which is largely intact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus in Olympia, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. These are seven absolutely magnificent structures, built in the ancient world. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient Worldwere first called themata, which translates in Greek to 'things to be seen'. The Great Pyramid of Giza, located in Egypt, was built between 2583 and 2561 BCE for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, also Known as Cheops in Greek culture. The Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest man–made structure for nearly 4,000 years. The excavation of the interior of the pyramid was initiated in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The structure itself, with its imposing height and perfect symmetry, is what impressed most ancient visitors. The Great Pyramid is also the only one of the Seven Wonders which still stand in fabulous condition to this day. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Hanging Gardens was built by the Babylonian ruler, Nebuchadnezzar, as a gift to his wife. Diodorus Sicilus, an ancient writer, had wrote that Nebuchadnezzar's wife, Amtis of Media, had missed the beautiful landscape and flowers of her homeland, and to please his wife, Nebuchadnezzar had a temple built. The temple was covered, bottom to top, with magnificent flora, but the beautiful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The phrase "Seven Wonders of the World" was coined in approximately the first and second centuries BC. The "seven wonders" refer to seven examples of architecture and art that the Romans and Greeks considered to be as close to perfection as could be reached on Earth by their standards. The seven wonders of the ancient world are as follows: The Great Pyramid of Giza; The Hanging Gardens of Babylon; The Statue of Zeus at Olympia; The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus; The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus; The Colossus of Rhodes; and The Lighthouse of Alexandria. Many historical events have taken place in Egypt ranging from 4000 BCE through the present. Egypt also plays a major role in the biblical aspect in history as well. Significant achievements from Imhotep; a remarkable architect and physician, to Moses freeing the slaves from the Pharos. Pyramids that were built between 2700 BCE – 2500 BCE remain one of the Seven Wonders of the World and still stand today.Egypt has been ruled by many and suffered through many conflicts. Through the preservation of sculptures, architectural designs, and human intelligence Egypt shows to be a culture of its own; and different from many. • 7. The Wonders Of The Invisible World Chapter Summary Throughout time, historians have relied on first person encounters to accurately depict the world and the people at a certain time. Cotton Mather's, The Wonders of the Invisible World, does exactly that by giving the reader a perspective into the Salem witch trials as well as a first person view from Mather himself. Through this work, Mather shares his opinions on the actions taken in the trials and the works of the Devil and God inside of New England. During this time period, religion played a significant part in society such that it was a driving force behind the hysteria created. This hysteria doesn't seem to reach Mather, but rather he seems to be compelled to write due to his pre–existing concern for society against the Devil and witchcraft. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems to be that Mather makes this deduction with guidance from his observations and is his driving force behind writing Wonders. He feels as though the Devil is running rampant through the colony that he has poured his heart into and also that it is a personal attack against him. Even though he understands everything that is taking place, he doesn't have the power as a single person to destroy it. All of this comes as though Mather knew this would happen to the colony at a certain point. This preface can be seen when Mather begins to discuss how the Ephesians were rejoicing in God's gospel and the Devil began to try and dismantle all of their joy (151). The whole situation seems to be a prophetic experience for Mather which leads to him realizing how rooted the Devil is in his colony and the destruction that he is causing. He later goes on to state that, "the devil has made a dreadful knot of witches in the county" implying, once again, the rooted aspect of the Devil (152). This expresses one of the true characteristics of why Mather brought Wonders to life; he wants people to understand the true magnitude of what is happening and the reason behind ... • 8. Fifth Business Character Analysis The impact of childhood events determines one's character in the course of one's life. This is particularly true in the life of the principal characters of Robertson Davies' Fifth Business, where one incident, the throwing of a snowball, decides the future of Boy, Dunstan, and Paul. Whether or not a person can move beyond his past has a profound effect on individuals as they age. In the novel, psychological well–being during childhood development is one of the central themes that shapes the characters. Boy Staunton, who is born into the richest family in the town of Deptford, grows from an irresponsible and spoiled boy to an ambitious and arrogant tycoon. His character epitomizes the way many rich people behave when they are unwilling to accept... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For that other two characters, they change their names subtly, adjusting the personalities in their names from their parents. (Beetz). However, Paul becomes Magnus Eisengrim who completely disconnects with his family and has himself reinvented as he runs away with a circus to escape from the contrition and jeers that are none of his business. At Paul's early age, Dunstan, who is "contrite and guilty" (Davies 11) for Paul's premature birth, acts as his playmate, reading to him about and teaching him magic, which leads him to his new life. As a "not[–]ten[–]yet" child (Davies 107), he is fully confident of the fact that his circumstance has condemned him to move beyond it. He takes such a firm action and courageous decision that later Dunstan wonders how he comes "by this new self" (Davies 202), which remains a mystery to Dunstan. When Dunstan is hired to write a fictional autobiography of Magnus's, he says about the book and Magnus's character that "[t]he autobiography of Magnus Eisengrim was a great pleasure to write, for I was under no obligation to be historically correct or weigh evidence." • 10. The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World Seven Wonders of the Ancient and New World The world is full of beautiful places but there are some places that are considered from the wonders of the world. These places and buildings were named as the seven wonders of the ancient world. Herodotus, A Greek historian, wrote about these wonders thousands of years ago. At this time, he thought that these buildings were the greatest structures in the world and he made a list of these places and called it the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World. A wonder is a structure created by something strange and amazing; when we see it, we say that it is rare and unexpected. Although there are several wonders in the world, there are seven that are recognized as being ancient. Tom Jackson, in his book The SevenWonders of The World, has written that the great pyramids of Egypt; they are the most ancient and historical place in Egypt, were built in Giza. These pyramids are very old, they have been there for over four thousand years. It is believed that the shape of these pyramids symbolized the prehistoric knoll from which they believed life emerged. The big sizes of these pyramids symbolize the power and the greatness of their country back in that days. Another structure that considered also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. They are also known as the hanging gardens of Semiramis. • 11. Analysis Of Wonders Of The Invisible World By Cotton Mather The short story, "Wonders of the Invisible World" by Cotton Mather, tells of how the devil is working around Boston. He tells this story from his own perspective in which he believes the devil is working in secret, and through the youth. One of the trials used as an example was Martha Carrier who was found guilty based on the information collected by Cotton Mather. Nathaniel Hawthorne, writer of the famous "Scarlet Letter", writes a short story from the narrator's perspective, and how he visits his friend called "Oberon." Oberon believes that the devil is residing within his writing and insists to the narrator that he must burn the manuscript to cast the devil out. The evidence that leads Oberon to believe that the devil is in his writing draws from publishers refusing to accept his work. In "Wonders of the Invisible World", Mather suggests the devil resides in people who collect in "hellish meetings" where they discuss how to "destroy the kingdom on out lord Jesus Christ." He uses Martha Carrier as an example of someone who is possessed by the devil and seeks to corrupt others and do harm to those who follow God. He provides evidence by bringing witnesses to Carrier's torment, including her children. How the devil is portrayed in "The Devil in the Manuscript" is more figurative rather than literal. Oberon believes the devil possessed his writing because no one wants to publish what he wrote. This is likely less literal than what Cotton Mather means, and is likely attributed from his ego and belief that his writing is too great to be his fault. The portrayal of the devil within the "Wonders of the Invisible World" is literal, and is inspired through fear and incredibly strict devotion to one religion. Cotton Mather believes the devil is literally possessing people and using those he possesses to corrupt others. He uses Martha Carrier as an example of how the devil will do this by bringing in her children to the trial. The children confessed on trial that "not only that they were witches themselves, but that their mother had made them so." This helped strengthen Mather's argument that the devil is working through people to corrupt others. The children's confession also helped give support to Mather's theory ... • 18. Natural Wonderss On Natural Wonders In The Medieval Century Wonders during the medieval era played a vast or minuscule role in engineering. Although people during this time sought to learn and implemented the wonders found by travel writers others were not so open to this new idea. Which also means that the definition of wonder differed for the courts and the monasteries. Travel writers such as Marco Polo who reported "Kublai Khan's famous levitating cups" helped raise the discipline of engineering by helping others built artificial wonders with this information (93). But also during this time with this new information a new distinction between artisanship and engineering was brought up.Overall medieval topographical and travel literature on natural wonders shaped and raised the discipline of engineering by giving definition and growth to many European courts. During the medieval era, courts were influenced by romance literature to further improve their military. The romances of Eneas and the Roman of de Troie described the wonders of art and ancient courtly engineering. For example in Eneas, Carthage was depicted with walls "made of marble and adamant painted a hundred colors and topped with three rows of magnets to incapacitate armed attackers" (89). Mather gives the outside world a glimpse into what the Salem Witch trials were like and how they conducted their way of figuring out who was a witch in their colony. The Wonders of the invisible world brought the audiences into the firsthand experience of a trial and made them experience it from the viewpoint of one of the citizens of that colony. Mather specifically focuses on the trial of Martha Carrier in his work. Mather discusses her trial and how she is being accuses by Benjamin Abbot of being a witch and giving his own testimony. In order to stay alive characters must go along with the horrible assumption that some people are witches even if they do not believe it just to stay alive. Events that others see as natural occurrences are being looked at as acts of Satan by the people in Mather's work. neighbors are turning on each other because they seek something that the other has and can not find another way to get the piece of land or cattle that they desire. Once someone is accused of being a witch there was no one that would try to argue with the claim out of fear of facing the same fate as the accused. We now have the technology to provide people that have missing limbs with fake ones so that they can continue on living their lives and enjoy it. This is just incredible. Many infectious diseases such as Chicken Pox, Malaria, Measles and Tuberculosis have been conquered through vaccines, antibiotics, and improved living conditions. Cancer has become a more common illness, but treatments have been developed that effectively combat some forms of the disease .We also have the technology to control abnormal heart rhythms with the use of a pacemaker. I think pacemakers are absolutely fantastic, such a clever idea. Pacemakers have prolonged people with heart conditions life span and made life easier for them to live. The way a little camera can be inserted into the body to look at problems/diseases, completely puts me in awe. Also heart and lung transplants are one of the marvels of today's world. This again saves people's lives. The way that a team of doctors and nurses are able to take out a patient's heart or lung and put in a new one so that they can live is truly a marvel. Jack 's real name was Clive Staples Lewis, but he didn 't like that name. Would you? He picked the name Jack. He made everyone call him Jack. If someone called him Clive, he would not answer. When Jack was six, his family moved. The "New House" was huge, with empty rooms, long hallways, and dusty attics. Imagine exploring a house like that. Jack also liked exploring books. They filled the New House with books – books in the study, in bedrooms, and on the stair landing, books in the attic piled up to Jack's shoulders. Oh, the splendid hours he spent reading! On rainy afternoons these books transported him to different times and different worlds. Jack made up his own country called Animal–Land. The animals wore clothes and talked and ruled the land. • 38. Comparing The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World fascinate and baffle the modern world. The list is comprised of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and lastly the Lighthouse of Alexandria (history). Ancient civilizations had developed and grown without being as connected as countries in today's society are. Thus, cultures and societies remained unique from the others. Ancient communities such as the Greek are both similar and different from other ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians in many ways; some similarities are their interests in geometry and mathematics, having an insular society, and religious beliefs and some differences are religious structures, art style, and finally government structures. A similarity between the ancient Egyptians and Greek is the use of what is now known as geometry. It is currently thought that the Egyptians had introduced the earliest fully–developed base–ten numeration system, this system was introduced around 2700 BCE, and was based. On people having ten fingers (story of mathematics). A famous document of the time was the Rhind Papyrus, created 1650 BC, and contained information and exercises to show the "Correct method of reckoning, for grasping the meaning of things and knowing everything that is, obscurities and all secrets."
