This document discusses the modern phenomenon of celebrity worship. It notes that celebrity status is now defined by one's popularity in the media rather than their actual accomplishments. Celebrities across many genres now exist, including those who gain fame through reality television. As celebrity status has grown in importance, so have invasions of their privacy through paparazzi photographers looking to profit from unauthorized photos. Celebrities also endorse products to maintain their public image and status, as fame depends on extensive media coverage which advertising extends.

2. Celebrity Status
A celebrity is a person who is well known for being well
known, a focus of gossip, of public opinion, of
magazines and newspapers. Celebrity worship is a
fairly recent phenomenon, if you look at a copy of The
Times from 1990, you wont find very much news about
celebrities, however now, if celebrity changes their
perfume or shampoo, there is a big story in papers
such as The Times as if it were news we should be
concerned about.

3. We now have celebrities defined in particular genres,
not just pop stars. We have celebrity gardeners and
celebrity cooks as well. We also have celebrities who
have appeared on reality TV game shows and have
gain popularity simply through being on TV. They
then do a few interviews, release videos and promote
a few events and they have become famous.

4. As celebrity status becomes increasingly important
in our society so have the representations of celebrity
we receive . A celebrity can expect a paparazzi
photographer to snap them anywhere at any time.
Paparazzi photographers are photographers who
follow/stalk celebrities and take pictures of them for
financial rewards. There are often stories of
paparazzi snapping photographs with a zoom lens
without permission .

5. Celebrity indorsement is very profitable. The star can
usually choose products which will benefit the
ideology they have constructed and the products get
the benefit of being associated with the celebrity.
Many pop stars endorse products in this way and
doing this enhances their own celebrity status since
celebrity status depends on the
amount of media coverage they
receive and advertising campaigns
extend that coverage.
