Thrillers
By Ashley Joseph
Thrillers use suspense, tension and
excitement as its main elements.
 After the assassination of JFK, political
thriller and paranoid thriller films became
very popular.
 Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer‟s
moods such as a high level of anticipation,
heightened expectation, uncertainty,
anxiety, suspense, excitement, tension
and terror.
 CLIFFHANGERS are used extensively to
build up tension and keep the viewers
guessing.

Common methods in crime thrillers are
mainly ransoms, captivities, revenge and
kidnappings.
 Common elements in psychological
thrillers and mind games, stalking, horrorof-personality and obsession.
 Many thrillers involve spies, but not all spy
stories are thrillers.
 There are many thrillers, the legal thriller,
spy thriller, action-adventure thriller,
medical thriller, police thriller, romantic
thriller, historical thriller, political thriller,
religious thriller, high-tech thriller, military
thriller.

1920s-1930s
 A man called Alfred Hitchcock made his first
thriller which was his third silent film in 1926 and
was called “The Lodger” a Jack The Ripper based
story filled with suspense and excitement.
1990s-Present
 The 90s started with Rob Reiners “Misery” which
was based on a book by Stephen King, “Sleeping
with the Enemy” followed in 1991.
 David Fincher brought us “se7en” in 1995 which
was about a search for a serial killer who
conducted the seven deadly sins.
 Uncertainty plays a big factor in thrillers as
humans posses a fear of „not knowing‟.
