Volcanoes are formed when molten rock rises up through fissures in the Earth's surface caused by movement of tectonic plates. The vent is the opening where magma emerges from the asthenosphere onto the Earth's crust. The funnel-shaped depression at the top of a volcano is called the crater. Active volcanoes frequently erupt, while dormant volcanoes may erupt again in the future but are currently inactive. Areas around volcanoes are rich in minerals and some have developed hot springs for tourism.
