Workshop on Enhancing Academic Intelligence
Conducted by a team of core members of ThinQ (www.thinq.education), the workshop will exemplify the ideas in the
keynote address on Academic Intelligence through various activities and exposition.
Theseactivitiesprovideahands-onexperienceofhowonecanuseconceptsofacademicknowledgerangingfrommathematics
and the sciences to history and philosophy to develop abilities of problem solving, critical thinking, and inquiry. These
abilities would be of value to everyone in their personal, public, and professional lives, regardless of their specialisation and
career paths. It will benefit not only policy makers and management officials, but also teachers handling Grade 9 and above,
and all others interested in educating others or being educated.
Brief biodata of the facilitators:
K P Mohanan MS, PhD Linguistics, MIT, Cambridge, USA
Mohanan, Co-Founder of ThinQ, is an internationally well-known theoretical linguist, with a passion for education. After a PhD from
MIT in 1982, he taught at the University of Texas at Austin, MIT, Stanford University, and the National University of Singapore, before
joining the IISER-Pune Faculty in January 2011, from where he retired at the end of 2016. He has made significant contributions to
linguistic theory in the areas of phonology, syntax, and morphology. Along with Tara Mohanan, he was the architect of an Inquiry-
Oriented undergraduate program in Linguistics at NUS. His more recent academic interests include scientific inquiry and the nature
of academic knowledge and inquiry in general, against the backdrop of human beliefs. Drawing on his experience as a researcher and
educationist, he is currently preoccupied with developing learning materials to nurture the capacity for critical thinking and inquiry, as
a means to enhance the academic intelligence of learners.
Vigneshwar Ramakrishnan PhD, NUS, Singapore
Vignesh embarked on his journey to educate and empower young minds after his PhD from the National University of Singapore
in 2012. He is currently an Associate Professor at SASTRA University, Thanjavur. His research work focuses on investigating the
mechanisms of protein-DNA interactions. Alongside his teaching and research commitments, he takes every available opportunity to
build inquiry abilities into the curriculum.
Rashmi Jejurikar MSc Biotechnology, University of Pune
Rashmi works as a curriculum and program developer at Agastya International Foundation, an NGO working in the space of hands-
on science education for underprivileged children in rural India. After several years of research in Neuroscience at NCBS, Bangalore,
Rashmi got interested in school education and the neuroscience of how we learn. Rashmi believes that the ThinQ course, Inquiry and
Integration in Education, was a transformative experience for her as it helped her to overcome fear and insecurity associated with open
exploration and to begin seeing it as an exciting journey. She is committed to developing an inquiry-oriented high school curriculum
for Biology as well as pursuing research on how knowledge is created in the brain.
Vaideeswaran S BTech, IIT Madras and MA, Delhi School of Economics
