Donner Party Thesis
Desperation can push people to do things they normally wouldn't such as lying, stealing, or eating
your family. The Donner Party in particular knows the woes of desperation all too well. The Donner
Party consisted of 89 Illinoisans who started their journey to California in April of 1846. The
expedition was led by two wealthy brothers named George and Jacob Donner. Initially, the group
followed reliable trail to follow a supposedly shorter route given to them by the young and unethical
lawyer named Lansford Hastings. Lansford went ahead, promising to mark the trail for them. Upon
reaching Weber Canyon, they found a note from Lansford stating that the trail was much more
strenuous than he thought, and to make camp until he could return to show them a better way. After
waiting eight days without an answer, the party sent a messenger to Hastings. He said to follow a
different route. What he had’ not disclosed, however, was that this route had not yet been traveled.
The Donners had to carve a fresh road through trees and rocks. The Donners eventually arrived at
the Great Salt Lake, but not without paying a price. Their lost time cost them 18 days, causing them

Trapped in the mountains, starved, stranded, and left for dead, the Donner party banded together in a
fight against time, nature, and temptation up until the very last minute. Though they suffered a great
deal and went through many losses, the Donner party portrays the true American dream of sacrifice
and will for a better life. While many choose to focus on what the party did to survive, the
underlying, unwavering hope for a better life is often left in the dark. It is time we bring to light
what the Donner party really is all about. A story of compassion, sacrifice, perseverance, hope, and a
true representation of what it means to work

Donner Party Literature
Carey Voeller's article, "a man is a fool who prefers poor California beef to human flesh:
(re)definitions of masculinity in nineteenth–century US Donner party literature" focuses on the
analysis of Thornton's cannibalism narrative. Barton Beebe's essay on "Shanzhai, Sumptuary Law,
and Intellectual Property Law in Contemporary China", apparently has a different subject with
Voeller's. However, the two articles share a connection under the obvious difference that moral
boundaries can be challenged or even denied under certain circumstance. In life, there are many
seemingly indisputable doctrines and principles that compose moral boundaries around us. It is
commonly accepted that copying others' intellectual works is immoral, let alone ... Show more

Even Eddy hold principle and refused to eat human fresh according to Thornton's description, he
ultimately surrendered to famine and ate human body. But the description was totally different with
that of Keseberg. Voeller quoted this narrative, "although he felt no hunger, his body imperiously
demanded nourishment...he was compelled to eat or die". For a person like Keseberg who preferred
human flesh to beef, moral criticism can be found everywhere in Thornton's article. Voeller,
however, seems pitiable for his unwilling cannibalism, which makes his cannibalism was not as
heinous as Keseberg's deed. In actually, they both committed cannibalism regardless. The author
tried to prettify Voeller's image and covered up his crime. When it comes to shanzhai, though the
author was very clear that it was against rule and moral values, he wrote that "arising out of the
'displacements of exile' from mainstream, establishment culture, shanzhai openly challenges the
inequalities in power and wealth that establishment culture perpetuates" or "shanzhai* represents a
challenge of the grassroots to the elite". He tried to cover–up the immorality of shanzhai as a great
threat to original intellectual property. Those sorts of cover–up, either

Essay Cannibalism
Cannibalism
Cannibalism has been around since the beginning of time. Mainly as an act of defense or as an
alternate, last resort, for food. Cannibalism is also used as an act of violence among animals to
preserve their genetics. Human cannibalism however, was not used as an act of violence to cause
pain and anguish amongst other human beings. Cannibalism within the human race is widely known
throughout the world, though you may not know it. From New Guinea to the high deserts of Arizona
the practice of cannibalism has been used. Why cannibalism was practiced is still a mystery to
many. Some think it actually was an act of violence, to torture the souls of others as revenge for
invading the other person's territory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Endocannibalism, also called funeral cannibalism, is the eating of a dead relative. The Fore women
of New Guinea practiced this type of cannibalism; a loved one would die and the female relatives of
the deceased would eat the brains while the men ate the muscle and internal organs. The body of the
one who died was thought to help the still living become stronger; the deceased body was a source
of nourishment. The Amazonian tribe of the Wari thought that the deceased would pass on and be
reincarnated as an animal providing food, once again, to the tribe. "Among the Wari people it was to
confirm that the loved one had passed into the afterlife and was to be re–incarnated as an animal"
(Marsh).
Exocannibalism is the eating of enemies or strangers, and warning other tribes not to set foot on that
particular piece of land.
"Aztec cannibalism formed part of their religious cosmology. The sun god had to be nourished with
hearts and blood of human beings. Without cannibalizing their enemies, the Aztecs believed their
world would collapse"(Marsh).
It was with the intention of saving themselves that they acted on cannibalism, without it their whole
race would be demolished.
Medicinal cannibalism, or using human remains as medicine, was used greatly among the ancient
Egyptians. Human remains were thought to be of good medicine getting rid of anything from a skin
rash to infertility. "The ingestion of human remains, particularly powdered human

Donner Party History
After its founder's assassination ■ (Joseph Smith Jr. in June 1844) and facing harassment by their
neighbors, the Church of Latter–Day Saints knew it needed to move its headquarters from Nauvoo
[Illinois]. With several factions competing for the Church's control, the faithful debated possible
destinations, including Oregon, Vancouver Island, Texas, and México's Alta California province. In
February 1846, with Apostle Orson Pratt's backing, Samuel Brannan (1819–1889) led 238 stalwarts
and set sail for Alta California aboard the 404–ton Brooklyn. Brannan hoped to pave the path for the
Church's eventual overland exodus.
Brannan, then twenty–seven, took his mission seriously. He equipped the enterprise well–their gear
included farm tools for eight hundred, an outdated printing press, and a flour mill–and drafted ...

At Fort Bridger, the Donner Party took the Hastings Cutoff, an untried shortcut through Utah's
Weber Canyon and the Great Salt Lake Desert. The Imus Party chose the longer, but proven, track
through Fort Hall [Idaho].
At Fort Hall, Captain Imus hired Caleb Greenwood, then eighty–three, to guide the party into
California. Greenwood (1763–1850) had trapped west of the Rocky Mountains since the 1820s and
had guided the 1844 Stephens–Townsend–Murphy Party. On that earlier journey, Greenwood's
emigrants–with help from a Paiute they called "Chief Truckee" –blazed a new Sierra crossing over
Donner Pass.
Guided by Greenwood, Imus followed the Truckee Trail toward Donner Pass. The party, however,
found a better summit approach that bypassed the Truckee River Canyon [between Truckee and
Verdi]. From 1847 until the railroad arrived, most emigrants preferred to use this wagon road. By
mid–October 1846, the Imus Party–now only four wagons strong as the others had stayed at Sutter's
Fort, near Dry Creek, and by the Mokelumne River–reached Tulare

The Hikers: The Rise And Fall Of The Search Party
In February of 1959, a group of 9 experienced hikers set out on an expedition across the northern
Urals of western Soviet Union, but perished in questionable ways. After more than 50 years, the
case remains unsolved. Official Soviet investigators labeled the cause of death as "a compelling
natural force", and promptly closed the case. On February 1st, the group set out on the expedition.
After the group did not send a telegram like promised, a search party was formed, initially made up
by students and volunteers, & later including army and police forces. About a week after the search
party was formed, the tent was found. The student who found the tent made this statement: "the tent

Cannibalism Among Neanderthals
Cannibalism is the practice of humans eating the flesh of other humans. The word comes from the
word Canibales. It is the Spanish name for Caribs, a tribe who practiced cannibalism in the Lesser
Antilles. But why do groups practice this? Is it a religious or ritual tradition, a warfare custom, or
simply done out of necessity? There is no one answer to this question, so in this paper I will try to
analyze some different explanations for this. Cannibalism has been practiced all over the world and
may have been practiced for tens of thousands of years. There are bones from Homo sapiens that
have marks where flesh was cut off that go back 600,000 years. Cannibalism among Neanderthals is
thought to have taken place because of food shortages and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The group got delayed and stranded by early snow when following a new route through Utah. Out
of 87 members, 48 were finally able to make it to California after resorting to cannibalism for
survival. This is one of the most well known examples of cannibalism being used out of necessity.
Another example is the shipwreck of the Essex whaler. A sperm whale attacked and sunk the ship in
1820. Survivors were stranded for 95 days at sea and were forced to eat five of the dead
crewmembers. Eventually, the men had to draw straws of who would sacrifice themselves and be
eaten. Seven more crewmen were cannibalized until the remaining eight men were rescued. Tribal
societies most commonly practice the act of cannibalism, and can sometimes be seen as a cultural
norm. This is usually done for rituals. Some tribes eat the flesh of dead tribe members to help the
dead person's soul navigate into living offspring. This is an example of endo–cannibalism, where
people are consumed within the tribe, usually part of a grieving process. During wartime, enemies
might be eaten to glorify a victory. In Melanesia, enemies might have been eaten to insult their
people. Some groups think eating the flesh of another person would give them that person's
characteristics. An example of a cannibalistic tribe is the Korowai

Personal Narrative: The Donner Party
It all started the day my group and I, the Donner party, packed up and headed to California. We
began our journey West in the spring of 1846. It would be a very long trip traveling from Illinois to
California. We left in search a better life and maybe even striking rich and finding gold. The Donner
party was led by me, George Donner; my brother Jacob; and James Reed. Each and every one of us
in the Donner Party had longed to begin a new, better chapter of our lives by reaching California. As
we began our trip, months passed. We had to walk as we drug our cattle behind, all eighty–seven of
us. The trip seemed everlasting. Once the month of October began, we reached the Truckee River.
This river was going to lead us almost straight to

Summary Of Dead Of Winter: The Donner Party
In 1846, eight families gathered together with a common goal, to find a better life in California.
These families became known as The Donner party, also known as the Donner–Reed party.
Although they set out with high hopes and good faith, their trip was doomed from the start. As I
watched Dead of Winter: The Donner Party, a documentary about the Donner Party, I noticed a great
difference in information then what was taught in class. I knew very little on this event and when I
watched this documentary it was in fact very detailed and interesting. The documentary states that it
was indeed James Reed, who was looking for a faster way to California. Within his studies, he had
discovered a short cut known as the Hasting Cut–off. Later did he realize,

The Causes And Consequences Of The Donner Party
The 19th century was a time where the idea of manifest destiny swept through the American nation.
Filling the minds of men and women of the united states, fueling the ideas of moving west for land
and prosperity. Americans sought to extend the United States territory from the Atlantic Coast to the
Pacific Coast, seeing it as their god given right to obtain the land. Nearly seven million Americans
embarked on that long and treacherous journey west. On this excursion, the travelers would face
rugged terrain, harsh weather conditions, savage Indians, and robbers. Although millions of the
travelers made it to their destinations unscathed, not all were so fortunate. One of the most tragic
recorded incidences during this western expansion was that of the Donner Party. This group of
pioneers, due to false information and bad judgment, became stranded on the Sierra Nevada
mountain during the winter of 1846 and were forced to turn to cannibalism to survive.
In the spring of 1846 a group of 87 people would leave their homes and head west in the hope and
promise of free land. This group of 87 individuals would later be known as the infamous "Donner
Party" (McGill). The Donner Party consisted of the Donner family and the Reed family. Led by
George Donner, this group of pioneers, like many other groups, were exceedingly eager to make it
to California, but unlike the other groups the Donner Party planned to take a short cut. "This short
cut was known as 'Hastings Cutoff', which was made

What Could Have Changed If More Things Were Questioned? We all know the story of the Donner
Party; They wanted to move west for a better life and a better future, but things went wrong. We all
cringe when we think of how they had to or were assumed to have committed cannibalism to
survive. But have we ever wondered what would have happened if something had gone another way
or if someone had said or done something different? Did the travelers in the Donner Party ever
wonder that? I believe some did, but did not want to admit that something went wrong or did not
want to take the blame for it. I agree with Frank Mullen when he describes the Donner party as, "not

He tells them all he will return the robes in the morning, but Jim Reed tells him to do it immediately.
People from the group agree in unison, fearing what the Indians may do the longer the robes are
missing. While on the ride back, "Keseburg refuses to speak", and is hesitant to return the robes
once they arrive back to the burial site (SMP 11). As Keseburg is placing the robes back at their
rightful places, Reed informs him that he is prepared to put Keseburg on the stand and have the
group decide his fate. Little did Reed know, Keseburg had made the decision to leave in the night
before a decision could be made. In this situation, Keseburg realizes he has done something wrong
and has endangered his fellow travelers. With this in mind, Keseburg changes course and leaves
before they can decide his fate. If Keseburg had not left in the night, what would the group have
decided for his fate? Would they ban him? Would they punish him? Take his cattle? Keseburg knew
he would not have a good chance of staying so, instead of waiting for them to tell him in the
morning, he avoided the whole thing and left in the night. If Keseburg had waited until the morning,
would the party have let him rejoin three weeks later or would they have continued to banish him? I
believe that they would have still decided to let him return unless the Sioux Indians had attacked the
party. If the party ended up being

The Consequences Of The Donner-Reed Party
The Donner–Reed Party was a bunch of brave people ready to begin a dangerous journey to
freedom. For many people, freedom meant different things to many people. For some, it meant a
new life or a new place. For others, it meant adventure. The Donner–Reed Party was led by George
Donner, Jacob Donner, and James Reeds. These men wanted a new life and better life. The Donner
and Reed families came on the journey with support, love, and an adventure. One day on the
journey, one guide never arrived which made it difficult to know where to go. Since the guide didn't
show up and it caused many conflicts. For instance, two men got into a fight, and one of them killed
the other and he was punished (McAndrew 36). The Donner–Reed Party was a group of emigrants
traveling to California, along with the journey the Donner–Reed Party encountered many obstacles
while on the Oregon Trail this led to many consequences, and they dealt with theses problems in
many different ways. The Donner–Reed Party was a group of people moving to California, looking
for a new beginning. Living in California was a lot cheaper which was better for many people
(Calabro Marian 17). California was mostly empty, so the land was free. This allowed people to
build new homes, and buildings (Calabro Marian 18). The Donner–Reed Party was originally from
Springfield. In Springfield, the wealthy people had it better than the people who weren't as wealthy.

Pioneers that Travelled across the Great Plains
Pioneers that travelled across the Great Plains would often run into trouble and suffer terrible
deaths. The Donner Party was one of those parties; however, the story connected to the name is
much more infamous than others. It is a story of suffering, betrayal, survival, and acts of necessity.
Perhaps the most interesting fact about these acts is that they were performed by everyday farmers,
traders, and businessmen. The reasons for these acts were, more than likely, out of the will to
survive, but there may a greater story behind such acts of "monstrosity."
People first started to travel (pioneer) to the "west" since the early 1800s. The reason to move varied
from family to family, many sought a new beginning from the economic depression in the late
1830s. Some wanted to escape political strife and religious persecution. Some moved to join family
members and seek adventure and new opportunities. The majority of emigrants had as their main
reason either land or gold. The most famously travelled trail is the Oregon Trail. This trail is the
nation's longest graveyard, killing nearly one tenth of all travelers (Utah State History, 2014). Many
wagon and hand cart groups took the rough 2,000 mile trail to go west; one of these groups was the
James Reed Party. It is more famously known as the Donner Party. A Common Goal

The Donner Party In The 1800's
In the early 1800's, the United States had an escalating number of settlers looking to conquer and
create new lives in the West. Many also joined the movement inspired by Manifest Destiny, the idea
that the land between the Atlantic and Pacific was American therefore should be established by
settlers. A group traveling westward as part of the movement in 1846 suffered sorrow at every turn
consequently ending in the 34 casualties of 87 original settlers. This group was led by Jacob and
George Donner, later the pioneers inherited the name the Donner Party. In the Spring of 1846 the
settlers left Springfield, Illinois and pursued a route that was supposedly a shorter course for
California. After multiple delays the Donner Party became caught in many snowstorms high in the
Sierra Nevada Mountains. As a result the group reduced to cannibalism to survive the harsh winters.

Research Paper On Human Cannibalism
Human cannibalism can be defined as "a human eating another human's flesh." There is many
human behaviors, and cannibalism is an act that gives most attention to detail. Cannibalism is an
extreme act some humans do, cannibalism has been around since the 17th century, and it motivates
humans to eat flesh from another human. Human cannibalism is brought to many cultures and
countries and many societies disgrace people that have been cannibalistic. In a life or death situation
you have very little options of food, if you were in a situation like that would you turn to
cannibalism?
There was no roads or highways during this time, so they had to use the dirt roads and the
mountains. There was no homes in the mountains there was a few vacation homes. Therefore, if
something happened to them no one would ever find them. Eric Bailey states, "A wagon of 18
emigrants is trapped in the Sierra" (1). In this quote there was 87 people on the wagon trapped in the
mountains. They ran out of food halfway through the journey. Eric Bailey explains, "Cannibalism
has dominated the story ever since the first, of 1847" (2). This cannibalism case was one one of the

them. Unlike the other cases in the history, there has been several cases of Cannibalism throughout

Critical Analysis Of The Donner Party
In May of 1846, settlers George Donner and James Reed led an assembly of nearly 90 people on a
journey from Springfield, Illinois to the newly discovered West. The West was full of new hope– a
chance of starting anew and the possibility of buying untouched land were promising to those who
yearned for more. The leaders, George Donner and James Reed, followed a book titled, The
Emigrants' Guide to Oregon and California written by Lansford Hastings, which ensured a shortcut
to their promising, new destination. Unfortunately, it was Hastings' book that ultimately led many in
the group to their untimely demise as the party got stuck in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the
harsh winter. The group ignored warnings from an old friend, James Clyman, and even refuted the
whispers heard prior to their departure of the anguish to come if they followed Hasting's new route.
It was a pilgrimage that created and left a trail of misery, betrayal, and death. Presently, one can
compare different versions of this harrowing American tale as technology has made different genres
available within readers reach. The original story was told firsthand by Eliza Donner, in her book
titled, The Expedition of The Donner Party and its Tragic Fate. Another valuable version utilizes
modern technology in the video documentary, The Donner Party. Although there are significant

Soon they become frustrated with with Lansford and took a full eight days to cross the salt plain.
Eventually that frustration is turned about one another and Reed was banished for killing John
Snyder. The crew still made it across the plain but their Hearty spirit was now tainted. Their
misfortune continued as Indians attacked them and poisoned 21 of their cattle, inevitably killing
them. They had sent two men for supplies but they still hadn't returned from the mission and the
party was starved. Tired and hungry the pack forged on towards the Sierras. Fortunately the two
men they had sent for supplies returned just before they attempted to cross the summit. Their luck
didn't last and when they reached the summits bottom, the first snow started to fall and a storm
quickly followed. Their food quickly ran out and they were stranded just 150 miles from Ft. Sutter.
Patrick Dolan dies just a few days into the storm and the group is starved and now sees the rotting
carcass as a source of food, and Dolan is the first human to be eaten. Slowly people die and are

The Story Of The Donner Party Summary
Stewart, George R. Ordeal by Hunger: The Story of the Donner Party. Boston: Houghton Mifflin,
1960 In the late summer of 1846 a group of pioneers started off on journey to California, later this
party would be known as the Donner Party, little did they know that this journey for a new life out
west would change life as they knew it forever. The book Ordeal by Hunger: The Story of the
Donner Party by George R. Stewart gives an outsiders look to the trails and tribulations of the
Donner Parties journey. George Stewart was a novelist and professor who taught more than fifty
years at the University of California. George makes it very clear from the preface that he believes
that the story of the Donner Party is one of the most amazing stories that came out of the American
West and wanted to write this book to show the extreme conditions a human being can go through
and the extremes they'll take to get through it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Which is very helpful to the reader because George does a great job at not only describing what type
of status quo each family is but also gives an insight to a bit of each characters personality. In the
book there are characters that seemed to fade into the background at the beginning but the way
George incorporates them tells the story of the Donner Party it can kind of shock you of what role a
person played in the survival of the group compared to the beginning of the book. The fact this book
is written as a nonfictional can come to quite a surprise to some readers. The way the story is told
with twists and turns of suspense and surprise makes it a page turner for any

The Donner Party Summary
According to the document, the Donner Party was a group of families trying to emigrate to
California. Burroughs explained in detail how the party decided to take the Hasting Cutoff–
neglecting all the warnings they received–to arrive quicker, but they encounter their worst enemy,
nature. A snowstorm obstructed their way and when the provisions ran low, surviving members were
pushed to their limits by eating strings, glue, small animals and lastly their dead companions. The
article also includes reports on studies conducted by scientists to determine whether survival
cannibalism happened among members of the Donner Party in 1846. The research tries to go against
certain written documents that might prove the truth about the so famous cannibalistic acts. ... Show

The author was great at introducing the event in a neat an organized way. In terms of the context, I
truly enjoyed how the author built up with the story, while simultaneously giving a centered view of

the possible reasons why the results might be misleading as well. Or in the sections "Fact or Fiction:

Misfits Analysis
Both Richard Donner's 1985 adventure comedy The Goonies written by Steven Spielberg, and Rob
Reiner's 1986 coming–of–age drama Stand By Me based on Stephen King's novella The Body,
portray several characters to be misfits in society. The Goonies follows the story of a group of
misfits on a treasure hunt to save their home from foreclosure and Stand By Me is a writer's recount
of the death of a friend and a boyhood journey to find the missing body of Ray Bowers. Narrative
perspective, sound, characterisation, camera angles, and symbolism, contribute to various themes
which Donner and Reiner exploit to evoke supportive emotion for misfits.
In diverse methods, both directors seek to engender support for their misfits by the pursuit of their
stories through differing perspectives. Donner refrains from applying narration and solely relies on
dialogue, conversely, Reiner reveals elements of his characters through the eyes of Gordie
Lachance, in first person narration. The lack of narration in The Goonies allows a viewer to
experience the journey of the misfits through a neutral and an unfiltered perspective. Donner
exposes his viewers to the perspective of several characters, which provides him the opportunity to
create characters which relate with the numerous circumstances and personalities of viewers. The
connection a viewer feels towards a character, lulls them to view matters similarly. Dissimilarly,
first person narration provides Reiner the opportunity to immerse his

The Fate of The Donner Party Essay
Desperate times call for desperate measures. This advice has been used as a way to justify
questionable actions in times of despair for many years. Following the advice, the Donner Party did
whatever they could to survive. Stuck in a snowstorm, the group is believed to have reverted back to
animalistic ways, and devoured each other to survive. While no one knows the truth of that fateful
winter, many agree that cannibalism was their main form of survival. Though the Donner Party's
travels were not well documented and many details remain controversial, it is evident that they
resorted to cannibalism to survive. During their western voyage, the group notoriously known as the

Records at this time were practically nonexistent and because of that, the Donner Party has gone
into history as not just a tragic tale, but "the Great American Dream gone awry" (Diamond, 1). Still
today, it is unclear whether the Donner Party resorted to cannibalism as a means of survival. The
events have been associated with cannibalism by so many and for so long that the undeclared
verdict of the Donner Party is that they did in fact resort to cannibalism. Certainly there are
arguments that disagree with this, but it is quite apparent that the party is guilty of anthropophagy.
The most common argument against the cannibalism theory is that the party used their basic
survival skills; they ate small game rather than each other to stay alive. Despite being a valid point,
there are weaknesses with that belief. Early on in their excursion the party quickly exhausted their
food supply. Fearing they were in for the worst, the group sent 15 group members out for help and
sure enough a snow storm trapped them on November 1, 1846. Any available animals were eaten
first and when that food source became scarce, they turned to eating their pets like the family dog.
They were enduring extreme starvation after just nine days which lead to important decisions
regarding their survival. In other words, a discussion regarding cannibalism had begun (Diamond,
2). This is where the "eating small game" belief exposes said

Cannibalism Research Paper
Cannibalism is an act that is thought to be terrible and inconceivable in the minds of people. But,
contrary to what many people think, cannibalism is very much alive and still being practiced within
many countries including The United States of America; it's just that the government hasn't found
out about it yet. This paper will take you through cannibalism's history, the different types of
cannibalism, and its different cases. Cannibalism is one of the strangest and most horrific American
restrictions. When the common person thinks of cannibalism a disturbed serial killer who cuts his
victims into pieces and boils them in bloody water quickly comes to mind. Cannibalism is exactly
defined as the eating of one's own species; cannibals are people–eating people. Cannibals have a
long, broad, and sometimes an honorable history. Some of the earliest evidence of cannibalism
comes from southern France, where there are Stone Age settlements littered with bones having

Even The Simpsons, a popular cartoon show that has a world–wide fan base, has made fun of

the fact remains that they negatively portray cannibalism in a way that differs greatly from reality.
By continually connecting cannibalism with murder, the entertainment industries have helped to
cause a stereotype for cannibalism that it is only performed by psychotic killers, or uncivilized
savages. However, this is not the case, though most movies forget to mention that not all acts of
cannibalism have to do with homicide, many in fact are cultural ways to express grief, honor the

The Journey Of Independence And Independence
The Journey to Independence It was 11:54 PM, six minutes before my birthday was officially over. I
sat in my darkened bedroom, silent tears streaming down my face, as I waited for a call or text from
my friends. It had been my birthday for twenty–three hours and fifty–four minutes, and I had heard
nothing from them. I lay in my bed, wondering how this had happened. Before I started high school,
I was part of a close–knit group of friends that was nearly inseparable. When freshman year began,
however, things changed. I was gradually pushed out of their circle as they started making new
friends. In the beginning, I let it happen, thinking that they would eventually come back to me, but I

I went along with it in the beginning, afraid that I would miss out on something unforgettable. But
as their partying continued, they began to make new friends that I had little in common with. My
fear of getting in trouble with my parents was much stronger than my desire to go to parties, which
ended up alienating me. My friends and I were still on good terms, but the tension between us grew
as our definition of "fun" changed. By the time Christmas break had rolled around, I was ready to
take a break from school and celebrate the holidays, which included my birthday, with my friends
and family. Unbeknownst to me, my fifteenth birthday would be one to remember in the worst way
possible. I did not have high expectations for my birthday. I planned on having an easygoing day;
my family and I were going to see a movie and have dinner at a restaurant of my choice. I was
expecting some "Happy Birthday" text messages and Facebook posts from friends, a phone call
from my grandma, and some kind of birthday surprise from my best friends. Before I knew it,
however, my birthday was over, and I had heard from just about everyone except for my two closest
friends. I was overwhelmed with confusion, sadness, and eventually, resentment. I began to think
about how I had gone above and beyond to celebrate their birthdays. I had planned and hosted
birthday dinners and parties for both of them, in addition to showering them with cards and gifts.

The Tragedy Of The Donner Party
Cannibalism was a solution going through many people's heads during the Oregon Trail, but not
many had really carried out the thought besides a group of people called the Donner Party, or the
Donner Reed Party. The journey out West took around four to six months, but for some, it took
longer because of changing weather conditions or rough terrain. The Donner Party were some of the
unfortunate ones that had to suffer a harsher trip. What happened with the Donner Party was a great
tragedy, but very few people know the full story.
During the 1840's, the United States saw a huge increase in pioneers, or people who left their homes
in the east to settle in the West. Some people saw California as a place where they would be free to

Doctrine of Frustration
Contract assignment Doctrine of frustration Doctrine of frustration ACCORDING to Section 56, an
agreement to do an act impossible in itself is void (for example, an agreement to discover treasure
by magic). Supervening impossibility or illegality refers to the intrusion or occurrence of an
unexpected event or change of circumstances beyond the contemplation of the parties; such event or
change of circumstances must be so fundamental as to be regarded by law as striking at the root of
contract as a whole or the basis of the contract no longer exists. Subsequent impossibility in the UK
is referred to as Doctrine of Frustration. A contract is deemed to have become impossible of

of what its rule requires. It is for that reason that special importance is necessarily attached to the

not hardship or inconvenience or material loss itself which calls the principle of frustration into

In early May, 4299, the four defendants and Roger Whetmore entered a limestone cavern. A
landslide occurred while the group was far from the cavern's entrance, trapping the spelunkers
inside. The only known entrance was the one blocked by the landslide. When the group failed to
return home to their families, the Secretary of the Speluncean Society was contacted, and a rescue
team was sent out immediately. The group of spelunkers had only brought very few supplies. New
landslides caused the rescue to be significantly delayed than originally planned. On the twentieth
day it was discovered the group had radios within the cave, and communication was achieved. The
men were eventually rescued thirty two days after the first landslide had occurred. After their
rescue, the defendants were charged with the murder of their fellow spelunker, Roger Whetmore. It
was discovered on the twenty–third day the group had killed and devoured their fellow spelunker.

Donner Party Tragedy Essay
Donner Party Tragedy
On a journey to a better life in California, the infamous Donner party, met sorrow at every turn.
Before their journey began, they encountered a shortcut discovered by Hastings. Like any other
normal person, they decided to take the easier route that unfortunately led to tragedy. There were
many key elements leading to the misfortune of this group.
From the beginning of their journey, the Donner party made mistakes. First of all, at the time of the
party's departure there was an outbreak of cholera and malaria. Germs and disease are not good to
carry along a journey half way across the country. Even the slightest germs were deadly to them.

Then they ran into a man by the last name of Kleiman. He warned the group that the road ahead was
very tough and that Hastings had trouble on the route himself. Kleiman told Mr. Donner NOT to
take Hastings route, but the Donner party continued despite their warning. Mr. Hastings promised
the party that he would wait for them at a fort along the way to California. When the party reached
the fort, Hastings had already gone ahead a week earlier with another group. He left simple
instructions for the Donner party to follow telling them it would not take long to get to Salt Lake.
Then they turned off track into the wilderness. It took 6 days to chop through to Big Mountain and
one month to reach Salt Lake rather than the week they had been promised. After 3 days they ran
out of water and Reed's oxen ran away and could not be found. Thirty–six oxen were lost and
wagons had to be left behind in order to get over the mountain. Then Reed killed Schneider because
he was whipping the oxen. Everyone was going mad. Indians killed 21 more oxen and then the
Donner axle broke on the first wagon. To make things worse, they encountered blizzard like snow
and sleet. If they had rested 4 days instead of 5 they would have made it through to California safely
without having to deal with any of the conditions mentioned above. It turns out that Hastings

Cannibalism Essay examples
There are so many bad things in the world but according to many, cannibalism is considered just
about the worst. Depending on your point of view, it rises above even such criminal abominations
as, rape and genocide. Then again, we live in a culture, in which people would run vomiting to the
bathroom if they saw what went into making their McDonald's hamburgers.
Cannibalism, also known as anthropophagi, is defined as the act or practice of eating members of
the same species. The word anthropophagi comes from the Arawakan language name for the Carib
Indians of the West Indies. The Caribs are well known for their practice of cannibalism. Among
humans, this practice has been attributed to people in the past all over the world, including ... Show

Among humans, cannibalism has been widespread in prehistoric societies on all continents. It is still
believed to be practiced in remote areas of the island of New Guinea. It existed until recently in
parts of West and Central Africa, Sumatra, Melanesia, and Polynesia. It also existed among various
Indian tribes of North and South America and among aborigines of Australia and the Maoris of New
Zealand.
The reasons for cannibalism have varied. Sometimes there was simply limited food. Some groups
liked the taste of human flesh. However, mostly the reasons had to do with revenge or punishment
for crimes, ceremony and ritual, or magic. Some victorious tribes ate their dead enemies to absorb
their strength. In come rituals, the deceased were eaten by relatives, as a manner of reverence or
honor for their ancestors, or as a desire for the soul of the dead to be reborn in the body of the
consumer. This is called endocannablism.
Civilized people have to resort to cannibalism from time to time, as a mean of survival, under
desperate circumstances. The story of the Donner Party is one of the more tragic incidents in
American frontier history. A group of about 90 immigrants led by George Donner was caught in a
blinding snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada range of California in October 1846. Survivors, who made

The Donner Party
Forty–six survivors out of an original 87, reached California starving, tired, and traumatized for life
from the experience they had just been through. A year of suffering was spent on a time that was
thought to have been only a few months of easy traveling on a shortcut routed by a man named
Lance Hatings.
The journey began on May 12th from Springfield Illinois. A train of nine wagons, filled with
members of the Donner and Reed families, set out in hopes of reaching California for free land and
a new life. The families had heard of a route that would get them to this great new country taking

So they were way behind schedule. On Aug 30 they began the trip across the Salt Desert according
to Hastings, it should have only taken 2 days but it took five and was very difficult. Thirty oxen
were lost and people almost died of heat exhaustion.
Soon after the desert, Reed murdered a man named Snyder. He was banished from the group and
had to set out on his own. Once winter arrived, everyone got stranded in the mountains. It snowed
most of November and all the people began starving and dying of mal nutrition. Most of the oxen
died and all the wagons were long gone. Some men went to try to get help but they got lost. After
being in the snow so long, the people got desperate for something to eat and drew straws to see who
would be used for food. It was extremely cold and the women and children suffered immensely.
Some women had to watch their husbands die and be eaten. A man named Patrick Dolan was the
first to be eaten. Seven relief men came to try and rescue the remaining people. They slowly made
their way towards California. On the way two children died. James Reed, the man that was
banished, led the relief party.
In April of 1847 the Donner Party survivors left the mountains and reached their destination. Only
46 out of 87 people survived. All of the Reeds survived and 8 of the Donners died. They wished
they wouldn't have gone along with Hasting's route. They did get the land they wanted though, and

In the early 1900s, the United States had an increase of settlers leaving their hometowns to the west
in the faith of being able to live in a more catholic freedom world, others also joined by the
inspiration of Manifest Destiny, a thought in which the Americans thought that everything between
the Atlantic and the Pacific ocean is theirs and should therefore settled by them. A group, that was

On the other hand, they also had to hurry because they still had to walk through three mountain

had 'The Emigrants' Guide to Oregon and California' with them. Since different people meet and
had to live with different characters, Tamsen Donner wrote: "We have of the best people in our
company and some, too, that are not so good." Since it was Spring, rain and storm were pretty
common and stopped the group on the Big Blue River. For a few people it was already too much of
what they can withstand and the first death was by Reeds grandma, the loss of her was tragically
written down by Virginia Reed: "..We made a neat coffin, and buried her under a tree... We miss her
very much." So far, there were no other major difficulties for the travelers, it was a pretty smooth
trip. Arriving to Fort Bridger about just a week behind schedule, there James Reed meets James
Clyman, an old friend who thought that the Hastings shortcut is unpractical, the old way would be
more safer, but Reed did not take the advice, he wanted to take the shortcut, probably by the thought
that a shortcut in our life also gets us to our target faster.

Donner Party Tale Analysis
Diversity Among Genres: A Donner Party Tale In May of 1846, settlers George Donner and James
Reed led an assembly of nearly 90 people on a journey from Springfield, Illinois to the newly
discovered West. The West was full of new hope– a chance of starting anew and the possibility of
buying untouched land were promising to those who yearned for more. The leaders, George Donner
and James Reed, followed a book titled, The Emigrants' Guide to Oregon and California written by
Lansford Hastings, which ensured a shortcut to their promising, new destination. Unfortunately, it
was Hastings' book that ultimately led many in the group to their untimely demise as the party got
stuck in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the harsh winter. The group ignored warnings from an
old friend, James Clyman, and even refuted the whispers heard before their excursion of the anguish
to come if they followed Hasting's new route. It was a pilgrimage that created and left a trail of
misery, betrayal, and death. Presently, one can compare different versions of this harrowing
American tale with the availability of different genres within readers reach. The original story was

Donner Party Thesis

  • 1. Donner Party Thesis Desperation can push people to do things they normally wouldn't such as lying, stealing, or eating your family. The Donner Party in particular knows the woes of desperation all too well. The Donner Party consisted of 89 Illinoisans who started their journey to California in April of 1846. The expedition was led by two wealthy brothers named George and Jacob Donner. Initially, the group followed reliable trail to follow a supposedly shorter route given to them by the young and unethical lawyer named Lansford Hastings. Lansford went ahead, promising to mark the trail for them. Upon reaching Weber Canyon, they found a note from Lansford stating that the trail was much more strenuous than he thought, and to make camp until he could return to show them a better way. After waiting eight days without an answer, the party sent a messenger to Hastings. He said to follow a different route. What he had’ not disclosed, however, was that this route had not yet been traveled. The Donners had to carve a fresh road through trees and rocks. The Donners eventually arrived at the Great Salt Lake, but not without paying a price. Their lost time cost them 18 days, causing them to become trapped high in the ... Trapped in the mountains, starved, stranded, and left for dead, the Donner party banded together in a fight against time, nature, and temptation up until the very last minute. Though they suffered a great deal and went through many losses, the Donner party portrays the true American dream of sacrifice and will for a better life. While many choose to focus on what the party did to survive, the underlying, unwavering hope for a better life is often left in the dark. It is time we bring to light what the Donner party really is all about. A story of compassion, sacrifice, perseverance, hope, and a true representation of what it means to work ... • 2. Donner Party Literature Carey Voeller's article, "a man is a fool who prefers poor California beef to human flesh: (re)definitions of masculinity in nineteenth–century US Donner party literature" focuses on the analysis of Thornton's cannibalism narrative. Barton Beebe's essay on "Shanzhai, Sumptuary Law, and Intellectual Property Law in Contemporary China", apparently has a different subject with Voeller's. However, the two articles share a connection under the obvious difference that moral boundaries can be challenged or even denied under certain circumstance. In life, there are many seemingly indisputable doctrines and principles that compose moral boundaries around us. It is commonly accepted that copying others' intellectual works is immoral, let alone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even Eddy hold principle and refused to eat human fresh according to Thornton's description, he ultimately surrendered to famine and ate human body. But the description was totally different with that of Keseberg. Voeller quoted this narrative, "although he felt no hunger, his body imperiously demanded nourishment...he was compelled to eat or die". For a person like Keseberg who preferred human flesh to beef, moral criticism can be found everywhere in Thornton's article. Voeller, however, seems pitiable for his unwilling cannibalism, which makes his cannibalism was not as heinous as Keseberg's deed. In actually, they both committed cannibalism regardless. The author tried to prettify Voeller's image and covered up his crime. When it comes to shanzhai, though the author was very clear that it was against rule and moral values, he wrote that "arising out of the 'displacements of exile' from mainstream, establishment culture, shanzhai openly challenges the inequalities in power and wealth that establishment culture perpetuates" or "shanzhai* represents a challenge of the grassroots to the elite". He tried to cover–up the immorality of shanzhai as a great threat to original intellectual property. Those sorts of cover–up, either ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay Cannibalism Cannibalism Cannibalism has been around since the beginning of time. Mainly as an act of defense or as an alternate, last resort, for food. Cannibalism is also used as an act of violence among animals to preserve their genetics. Human cannibalism however, was not used as an act of violence to cause pain and anguish amongst other human beings. Cannibalism within the human race is widely known throughout the world, though you may not know it. From New Guinea to the high deserts of Arizona the practice of cannibalism has been used. Why cannibalism was practiced is still a mystery to many. Some think it actually was an act of violence, to torture the souls of others as revenge for invading the other person's territory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Endocannibalism, also called funeral cannibalism, is the eating of a dead relative. The Fore women of New Guinea practiced this type of cannibalism; a loved one would die and the female relatives of the deceased would eat the brains while the men ate the muscle and internal organs. The body of the one who died was thought to help the still living become stronger; the deceased body was a source of nourishment. The Amazonian tribe of the Wari thought that the deceased would pass on and be reincarnated as an animal providing food, once again, to the tribe. "Among the Wari people it was to confirm that the loved one had passed into the afterlife and was to be re–incarnated as an animal" (Marsh). Exocannibalism is the eating of enemies or strangers, and warning other tribes not to set foot on that particular piece of land. "Aztec cannibalism formed part of their religious cosmology. The sun god had to be nourished with hearts and blood of human beings. Without cannibalizing their enemies, the Aztecs believed their world would collapse"(Marsh). It was with the intention of saving themselves that they acted on cannibalism, without it their whole race would be demolished. Medicinal cannibalism, or using human remains as medicine, was used greatly among the ancient Egyptians. Human remains were thought to be of good medicine getting rid of anything from a skin rash to infertility. "The ingestion of human remains, particularly powdered human ... • 4. Donner Party History After its founder's assassination ■ (Joseph Smith Jr. in June 1844) and facing harassment by their neighbors, the Church of Latter–Day Saints knew it needed to move its headquarters from Nauvoo [Illinois]. With several factions competing for the Church's control, the faithful debated possible destinations, including Oregon, Vancouver Island, Texas, and México's Alta California province. In February 1846, with Apostle Orson Pratt's backing, Samuel Brannan (1819–1889) led 238 stalwarts and set sail for Alta California aboard the 404–ton Brooklyn. Brannan hoped to pave the path for the Church's eventual overland exodus. Brannan, then twenty–seven, took his mission seriously. He equipped the enterprise well–their gear included farm tools for eight hundred, an outdated printing press, and a flour mill–and drafted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At Fort Bridger, the Donner Party took the Hastings Cutoff, an untried shortcut through Utah's Weber Canyon and the Great Salt Lake Desert. The Imus Party chose the longer, but proven, track through Fort Hall [Idaho]. At Fort Hall, Captain Imus hired Caleb Greenwood, then eighty–three, to guide the party into California. Greenwood (1763–1850) had trapped west of the Rocky Mountains since the 1820s and had guided the 1844 Stephens–Townsend–Murphy Party. On that earlier journey, Greenwood's emigrants–with help from a Paiute they called "Chief Truckee" –blazed a new Sierra crossing over Donner Pass. Guided by Greenwood, Imus followed the Truckee Trail toward Donner Pass. The party, however, found a better summit approach that bypassed the Truckee River Canyon [between Truckee and Verdi]. From 1847 until the railroad arrived, most emigrants preferred to use this wagon road. By mid–October 1846, the Imus Party–now only four wagons strong as the others had stayed at Sutter's Fort, near Dry Creek, and by the Mokelumne River–reached Tulare ... • 5. The Hikers: The Rise And Fall Of The Search Party In February of 1959, a group of 9 experienced hikers set out on an expedition across the northern Urals of western Soviet Union, but perished in questionable ways. After more than 50 years, the case remains unsolved. Official Soviet investigators labeled the cause of death as "a compelling natural force", and promptly closed the case. On February 1st, the group set out on the expedition. After the group did not send a telegram like promised, a search party was formed, initially made up by students and volunteers, & later including army and police forces. About a week after the search party was formed, the tent was found. The student who found the tent made this statement: "the tent was half torn down and covered with snow. It was empty, and ... • 6. Cannibalism Among Neanderthals Cannibalism is the practice of humans eating the flesh of other humans. The word comes from the word Canibales. It is the Spanish name for Caribs, a tribe who practiced cannibalism in the Lesser Antilles. But why do groups practice this? Is it a religious or ritual tradition, a warfare custom, or simply done out of necessity? There is no one answer to this question, so in this paper I will try to analyze some different explanations for this. Cannibalism has been practiced all over the world and may have been practiced for tens of thousands of years. There are bones from Homo sapiens that have marks where flesh was cut off that go back 600,000 years. Cannibalism among Neanderthals is thought to have taken place because of food shortages and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The group got delayed and stranded by early snow when following a new route through Utah. Out of 87 members, 48 were finally able to make it to California after resorting to cannibalism for survival. This is one of the most well known examples of cannibalism being used out of necessity. Another example is the shipwreck of the Essex whaler. A sperm whale attacked and sunk the ship in 1820. Survivors were stranded for 95 days at sea and were forced to eat five of the dead crewmembers. Eventually, the men had to draw straws of who would sacrifice themselves and be eaten. Seven more crewmen were cannibalized until the remaining eight men were rescued. Tribal societies most commonly practice the act of cannibalism, and can sometimes be seen as a cultural norm. This is usually done for rituals. Some tribes eat the flesh of dead tribe members to help the dead person's soul navigate into living offspring. This is an example of endo–cannibalism, where people are consumed within the tribe, usually part of a grieving process. During wartime, enemies might be eaten to glorify a victory. In Melanesia, enemies might have been eaten to insult their people. Some groups think eating the flesh of another person would give them that person's characteristics. • 7. Personal Narrative: The Donner Party It all started the day my group and I, the Donner party, packed up and headed to California. We began our journey West in the spring of 1846. It would be a very long trip traveling from Illinois to California. We left in search a better life and maybe even striking rich and finding gold. The Donner party was led by me, George Donner; my brother Jacob; and James Reed. Each and every one of us in the Donner Party had longed to begin a new, better chapter of our lives by reaching California. As we began our trip, months passed. We had to walk as we drug our cattle behind, all eighty–seven of us. The trip seemed everlasting. Once the month of October began, we reached the Truckee River. • 8. Summary Of Dead Of Winter: The Donner Party In 1846, eight families gathered together with a common goal, to find a better life in California. These families became known as The Donner party, also known as the Donner–Reed party. Although they set out with high hopes and good faith, their trip was doomed from the start. As I watched Dead of Winter: The Donner Party, a documentary about the Donner Party, I noticed a great difference in information then what was taught in class. I knew very little on this event and when I watched this documentary it was in fact very detailed and interesting. The documentary states that it was indeed James Reed, who was looking for a faster way to California. Within his studies, he had discovered a short cut known as the Hasting Cut–off. • 9. The Causes And Consequences Of The Donner Party The 19th century was a time where the idea of manifest destiny swept through the American nation. Filling the minds of men and women of the united states, fueling the ideas of moving west for land and prosperity. Americans sought to extend the United States territory from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast, seeing it as their god given right to obtain the land. Nearly seven million Americans embarked on that long and treacherous journey west. On this excursion, the travelers would face rugged terrain, harsh weather conditions, savage Indians, and robbers. Although millions of the travelers made it to their destinations unscathed, not all were so fortunate. One of the most tragic recorded incidences during this western expansion was that of the Donner Party. This group of pioneers, due to false information and bad judgment, became stranded on the Sierra Nevada mountain during the winter of 1846 and were forced to turn to cannibalism to survive. In the spring of 1846 a group of 87 people would leave their homes and head west in the hope and promise of free land. This group of 87 individuals would later be known as the infamous "Donner Party" (McGill). The Donner Party consisted of the Donner family and the Reed family. Led by George Donner, this group of pioneers, like many other groups, were exceedingly eager to make it to California, but unlike the other groups the Donner Party planned to take a short cut. • 10. Donner Party Essay Questions Sabrina Aitken Letitia Scott–Curtis English 2 12 July 2017 What Could Have Changed If More Things Were Questioned? We all know the story of the Donner Party; They wanted to move west for a better life and a better future, but things went wrong. We all cringe when we think of how they had to or were assumed to have committed cannibalism to survive. But have we ever wondered what would have happened if something had gone another way or if someone had said or done something different? Did the travelers in the Donner Party ever wonder that? I believe some did, but did not want to admit that something went wrong or did not want to take the blame for it. I agree with Frank Mullen when he describes the Donner party as, "not a team, a company, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He tells them all he will return the robes in the morning, but Jim Reed tells him to do it immediately. People from the group agree in unison, fearing what the Indians may do the longer the robes are missing. While on the ride back, "Keseburg refuses to speak", and is hesitant to return the robes once they arrive back to the burial site (SMP 11). As Keseburg is placing the robes back at their rightful places, Reed informs him that he is prepared to put Keseburg on the stand and have the group decide his fate. Little did Reed know, Keseburg had made the decision to leave in the night before a decision could be made. In this situation, Keseburg realizes he has done something wrong and has endangered his fellow travelers. With this in mind, Keseburg changes course and leaves before they can decide his fate. If Keseburg had not left in the night, what would the group have decided for his fate? Would they ban him? Would they punish him? Take his cattle? Keseburg knew he would not have a good chance of staying so, instead of waiting for them to tell him in the morning, he avoided the whole thing and left in the night. If Keseburg had waited until the morning, would the party have let him rejoin three weeks later or would they have continued to banish him? I believe that they would have still decided to let him return unless the Sioux Indians had attacked the party. If the party ended up being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Consequences Of The Donner-Reed Party The Donner–Reed Party was a bunch of brave people ready to begin a dangerous journey to freedom. For many people, freedom meant different things to many people. For some, it meant a new life or a new place. For others, it meant adventure. The Donner–Reed Party was led by George Donner, Jacob Donner, and James Reeds. These men wanted a new life and better life. The Donner and Reed families came on the journey with support, love, and an adventure. One day on the journey, one guide never arrived which made it difficult to know where to go. Since the guide didn't show up and it caused many conflicts. For instance, two men got into a fight, and one of them killed the other and he was punished (McAndrew 36). The Donner–Reed Party was a group of emigrants traveling to California, along with the journey the Donner–Reed Party encountered many obstacles while on the Oregon Trail this led to many consequences, and they dealt with theses problems in many different ways. The Donner–Reed Party was a group of people moving to California, looking for a new beginning. Living in California was a lot cheaper which was better for many people (Calabro Marian 17). California was mostly empty, so the land was free. This allowed people to build new homes, and buildings (Calabro Marian 18). The Donner–Reed Party was originally from Springfield. • 12. Pioneers that Travelled across the Great Plains Pioneers that travelled across the Great Plains would often run into trouble and suffer terrible deaths. The Donner Party was one of those parties; however, the story connected to the name is much more infamous than others. It is a story of suffering, betrayal, survival, and acts of necessity. Perhaps the most interesting fact about these acts is that they were performed by everyday farmers, traders, and businessmen. The reasons for these acts were, more than likely, out of the will to survive, but there may a greater story behind such acts of "monstrosity." People first started to travel (pioneer) to the "west" since the early 1800s. The reason to move varied from family to family, many sought a new beginning from the economic depression in the late 1830s. Some wanted to escape political strife and religious persecution. Some moved to join family members and seek adventure and new opportunities. The majority of emigrants had as their main reason either land or gold. The most famously travelled trail is the Oregon Trail. This trail is the nation's longest graveyard, killing nearly one tenth of all travelers (Utah State History, 2014). Many wagon and hand cart groups took the rough 2,000 mile trail to go west; one of these groups was the James Reed Party. It is more famously known as the Donner Party. A Common Goal In April of 1846, a group of eight families in Illinois gathered together to find for a better life in the west. A businessman by the name of James Reed sent out ... Many also joined the movement inspired by Manifest Destiny, the idea that the land between the Atlantic and Pacific was American therefore should be established by settlers. A group traveling westward as part of the movement in 1846 suffered sorrow at every turn consequently ending in the 34 casualties of 87 original settlers. This group was led by Jacob and George Donner, later the pioneers inherited the name the Donner Party. Critical Analysis Of The Donner Party In May of 1846, settlers George Donner and James Reed led an assembly of nearly 90 people on a journey from Springfield, Illinois to the newly discovered West. The West was full of new hope– a chance of starting anew and the possibility of buying untouched land were promising to those who yearned for more. The leaders, George Donner and James Reed, followed a book titled, The Emigrants' Guide to Oregon and California written by Lansford Hastings, which ensured a shortcut to their promising, new destination. Misfits Analysis Both Richard Donner's 1985 adventure comedy The Goonies written by Steven Spielberg, and Rob Reiner's 1986 coming–of–age drama Stand By Me based on Stephen King's novella The Body, portray several characters to be misfits in society. The Goonies follows the story of a group of misfits on a treasure hunt to save their home from foreclosure and Stand By Me is a writer's recount of the death of a friend and a boyhood journey to find the missing body of Ray Bowers. Narrative perspective, sound, characterisation, camera angles, and symbolism, contribute to various themes which Donner and Reiner exploit to evoke supportive emotion for misfits. In diverse methods, both directors seek to engender support for their misfits by the pursuit of their stories through differing perspectives. Donner refrains from applying narration and solely relies on dialogue, conversely, Reiner reveals elements of his characters through the eyes of Gordie Lachance, in first person narration. The lack of narration in The Goonies allows a viewer to experience the journey of the misfits through a neutral and an unfiltered perspective. Donner exposes his viewers to the perspective of several characters, which provides him the opportunity to create characters which relate with the numerous circumstances and personalities of viewers. The connection a viewer feels towards a character, lulls them to view matters similarly. Dissimilarly, first person narration provides Reiner the opportunity to immerse his ... The events have been associated with cannibalism by so many and for so long that the undeclared verdict of the Donner Party is that they did in fact resort to cannibalism. Certainly there are arguments that disagree with this, but it is quite apparent that the party is guilty of anthropophagy. The most common argument against the cannibalism theory is that the party used their basic survival skills; they ate small game rather than each other to stay alive. Despite being a valid point, there are weaknesses with that belief. Early on in their excursion the party quickly exhausted their food supply. Fearing they were in for the worst, the group sent 15 group members out for help and sure enough a snow storm trapped them on November 1, 1846. Any available animals were eaten first and when that food source became scarce, they turned to eating their pets like the family dog. A landslide occurred while the group was far from the cavern's entrance, trapping the spelunkers inside. The only known entrance was the one blocked by the landslide. When the group failed to return home to their families, the Secretary of the Speluncean Society was contacted, and a rescue team was sent out immediately. The group of spelunkers had only brought very few supplies. New landslides caused the rescue to be significantly delayed than originally planned. On the twentieth day it was discovered the group had radios within the cave, and communication was achieved. The men were eventually rescued thirty two days after the first landslide had occurred. After their rescue, the defendants were charged with the murder of their fellow spelunker, Roger Whetmore. It was discovered on the twenty–third day the group had killed and devoured their fellow spelunker. The verdict of the initial trial found the defendants guilty, and the four men were sentenced to be hung. The jury members requested the sentence be reduced to six months in jail. The defendants also claim it was again Whetmore's idea to cast lots with a pair of dice he brought with him on the trip. While the defendants are under oath, there is still doubt in the validity of their testimonies. When the spelunkers were rescued on the thirty–second day of being in the cave, it was discovered that Whetmore had been murdered and consumed on the twenty–third day. This leaves nine days to come up with a story approved by each group member. The last contact between the trapped men and the rescue camp had been the group asking for legal advice about the consequences of eating one of their own. This suggests that the men knew there would be legal consequences for their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Before their journey began, they encountered a shortcut discovered by Hastings. Like any other normal person, they decided to take the easier route that unfortunately led to tragedy. There were many key elements leading to the misfortune of this group. From the beginning of their journey, the Donner party made mistakes. First of all, at the time of the party's departure there was an outbreak of cholera and malaria. Germs and disease are not good to carry along a journey half way across the country. Even the slightest germs were deadly to them. After they passed Independence, Missouri, they were in unfamiliar land. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then they ran into a man by the last name of Kleiman. He warned the group that the road ahead was very tough and that Hastings had trouble on the route himself. Kleiman told Mr. Donner NOT to take Hastings route, but the Donner party continued despite their warning. Mr. Hastings promised the party that he would wait for them at a fort along the way to California. When the party reached the fort, Hastings had already gone ahead a week earlier with another group. He left simple instructions for the Donner party to follow telling them it would not take long to get to Salt Lake. Then they turned off track into the wilderness. It took 6 days to chop through to Big Mountain and one month to reach Salt Lake rather than the week they had been promised. After 3 days they ran out of water and Reed's oxen ran away and could not be found. Thirty–six oxen were lost and wagons had to be left behind in order to get over the mountain. Then Reed killed Schneider because he was whipping the oxen. Everyone was going mad. Indians killed 21 more oxen and then the Donner axle broke on the first wagon. To make things worse, they encountered blizzard like snow and sleet. If they had rested 4 days instead of 5 they would have made it through to California safely without having to deal with any of the conditions mentioned above. Among humans, cannibalism has been widespread in prehistoric societies on all continents. It is still believed to be practiced in remote areas of the island of New Guinea. It existed until recently in parts of West and Central Africa, Sumatra, Melanesia, and Polynesia. It also existed among various Indian tribes of North and South America and among aborigines of Australia and the Maoris of New Zealand. The reasons for cannibalism have varied. Sometimes there was simply limited food. Some groups liked the taste of human flesh. However, mostly the reasons had to do with revenge or punishment for crimes, ceremony and ritual, or magic. Some victorious tribes ate their dead enemies to absorb their strength. In come rituals, the deceased were eaten by relatives, as a manner of reverence or honor for their ancestors, or as a desire for the soul of the dead to be reborn in the body of the consumer. This is called endocannablism. Civilized people have to resort to cannibalism from time to time, as a mean of survival, under desperate circumstances. The story of the Donner Party is one of the more tragic incidents in American frontier history. A group of about 90 immigrants led by George Donner was caught in a blinding snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada range of California in October 1846. Survivors, who made their way out early in 1847, ... On Aug 30 they began the trip across the Salt Desert according to Hastings, it should have only taken 2 days but it took five and was very difficult. Thirty oxen were lost and people almost died of heat exhaustion. Soon after the desert, Reed murdered a man named Snyder. He was banished from the group and had to set out on his own. Once winter arrived, everyone got stranded in the mountains. It snowed most of November and all the people began starving and dying of mal nutrition. Most of the oxen died and all the wagons were long gone. Some men went to try to get help but they got lost. After being in the snow so long, the people got desperate for something to eat and drew straws to see who would be used for food. It was extremely cold and the women and children suffered immensely. Some women had to watch their husbands die and be eaten. A man named Patrick Dolan was the first to be eaten. Seven relief men came to try and rescue the remaining people. They slowly made their way towards California. On the way two children died. James Reed, the man that was banished, led the relief party. In April of 1847 the Donner Party survivors left the mountains and reached their destination. Only 46 out of 87 people survived. All of the Reeds survived and 8 of the Donners died.
