the City. As of 2014, based on data provided by the Coalition for the Homeless, there are 59,246

to $856 million a year. There are thousands more who sleep on the streets, but due to lack of data we
are not sure of the exact number. Shelters only provide a temporary solution; on average a person is

The lack of affordable housing in the United States is a problem that doesn 't receive nearly the
attention that it necessitates. This absence of affordable housing became especially prevalent
following World War II when suburbanization spread across the country like wildfire. Although the
sheer number of homes increased, Jim Crow segregation influenced housing policy, meaning that
white institutions prevented blacks from obtaining the mortgages needed to afford such homes.
Therefore, rather than accept subprime loans, which often result in foreclosure, many black people
have been pigeonholed into paying exorbitant rates for dilapidated rental properties located in inner–

careful planning and execution, we can solve the affordable housing problem. Specifically, my
proposal involves the following two components: the government must first revise and draft three
forms of legislation that create strict yet concise standards that landlords must follow, and then
allocate federal funding to health and wellness programs within poor communities. By examining
the contributing societal factors to the lack of affordable housing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then
implementing the proposal mentioned above, one could potentially solve the affordable housing
problem there and transpose the plan to other impoverished cities across the country.

Cape Cod is plagued by an economic dilemma: young people, especially young families can not
afford to live here. From 2000 to 2010, Cape Cod experienced an exodus of 27% of those between
the ages of 25 and 44. One of the major factors in this outmigration is the lack of affordable housing.
Affordable housing is defined as a specific, measurable ratio of income–to– housing expense. They
are homes made available specifically to individuals and families whose income is at or below 80%
of the median income for the area, as established by the Office of Housing and Urban Development,

The development of affordable housing results in immediate and long term economic benefits by
increasing government and discretionary spending in the local community. The spending increase
occurs in several stages: the immediate effects of the actual construction, the secondary effects of
housing–cost relief on overburdened families, and the long term effects of increased government
spending in the region.
In the first stage, the construction of new buildings results in new construction jobs. For example,
building 100 LIHTC for families leads to creation of 80 construction related jobs and 42 jobs based
