Then and Now
• The world is now on 36.7% IPv6
capability
– We apply the same methodology as
before, and see how things have
changed
– We still think APNIC is a
conservative “low side” count, and
have high confidence in these
figures.. mostly!
– This time, we’ll rank the economies
to the 36.7% capability figure, above
and below.
The world is on around 18% IPv6
capability
• Capability as in ‘can use IPv6’ not necessarily preferring it
⎯ Measured as % of sampled users who can fetch an IPv6 addressed
web asset embedded in a web advertisement
• 15 million or more samples per day, worldwide
⎯ Figures adjusted for relative Internet population
⎯ We over-sample the US, under-sample India
• Other measures place it slightly higher at 20% or better
⎯ Consider APNIC a ‘low side’ count and them as ‘high side count’
⎯ Its pretty well bracketed; It’s a high confidence figure
• Lets rank the economies by IPv6 capability above and
below 18%

AP Region Punches above its weight!
• From 56 APNIC Economies, in 2018 4 were above average,
7 average and 2 below average:
– 23% of the region’s economies had visible IPv6 capability above 1%
• In 2023, 10 Economies are above average, 12 average and
3 significantly below average, for a total of 25 from 56.
– 44% of the region’s economies are now visible in IPv6 capability
(above 1%)

13
Asia Pacific continues to dominate
• India’s relative contribution has shrunk
• But the 2nd rank contributor is now China, not the US, even
though IPv6 capability ranks lower in our measurements
• Japan’s ranking is largely unchanged
• Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Australia all
increased ranking and contribution
• APNIC economies are 63% of all IPv6 capability seen
15. 15
15
China has moved at scale
• Until mid-late 2018 China did not show any real adoption
• Since mid 2018 we see signs across all the major ISPs of
IPv6 adoption
– There are possibilities the mechanisms used by APNIC do not
entirely reflect adoption levels inside China, some ISPs report
significantly higher deployment at scale
• China has good targets in state planning
• Chinese IPv6 is now world second-rank by user/population
16. 16
16
Conclusions
• APNIC region is dominant in IPv6 deployment at scale by
population and %capability
– Rising from 52% to 63%
– Higher economy count, deeper participation per economy
• It’s not equally spread into all economies
– The variances continue to be very confusing: its not about being a
developed, or developing economy, or size, or amount of ASN diversity
– It may be more about cost of capital and willingness to invest
• There has been significant progress since 2018 which appears
to be continuing
• China’s relative contribution to world IPv6 is highly significant
