Broward County Facts Broward County is  48 miles long and 25 miles wide Broward is the 2nd largest county out of 67 in the State of Florida by population and 15th in the nation. The 2000 Census reported Broward County’s population at 1.62 million. Broward’s current population is 1,734,734 with 100,000 additional seasonal residents and visitors
Population growth has been highest in the western areas, such as Weston, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines, as well as in the northwest corner , such as Parkland.  These areas have grown 65% or more, since 1990.  Slower growth areas are found in the eastern communities such as Dania and Hollywood.  These areas have already begun redevelopment and are key targets as build out approaches. Population Growth
As new land becomes scarce and population continues to grow, redevelopment is inevitable.

The median age is 37.8 years. The largest five-year age group is 35 to 39 year olds. One in four residents is under 18 years, including nearly 280,000 school-aged and 103,000 preschool children. One in six residents is aged 65 and older. Reflecting longer life expectancy among women, two thirds of the persons aged 75 and older are female. There are almost 400 centurions living in Broward County. Age Groups
Future Projections  By 2030, Broward County’s population will reach 2.5 million and will include:  181,000 preschoolers,  445,000 school-aged children,  1.5 million working-aged adults, and  470,000 seniors.

20 Year Vision Broward County is a diverse, vibrant, urban community with parks, beaches, and green space. Libraries Business Strategic Plan 2008 – 2012 Improving External and Internal Processes  to Achieve Operational Efficiencies The Libraries Division will provide information as requested in the County Auditor’s Report of August 22, 2007.
Libraries Business Strategic Plan 2008 – 2012 	Constructing and Maintaining Bond Issue Buildings Since 2000, thirteen completely new libraries have been constructed and opened to the public, including as Bond projects: the West, South, Southwest and Northwest Regional Libraries (70,000 square feet each)  	Tamarac, Miramar, Weston and Hollywood Branch Libraries (30,000 square feet each) 	Lauderhill Towne Centre, Tyrone Bryant and Northwest Branch Libraries (10,000 square feet each) 	Capital projects, the North Lauderdale Saraniero and Stirling Road Branch Libraries (20,000 square feet each)  	The African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (64,000 square feet).

Library Support Groups Library Advisory Board Broward Public Library Foundation Friends of Broward County Library, Inc.
Library Advisory Board Purpose: Advise the Division Director, the County Administrator, and the County Commission on all matters pertaining to public library services.  Recommends policies for consideration to improve the quality of the Library system.
Library Advisory Board Created by: Broward County Administrative Code Section 64.01 and Section 60.03-06.09 and Ordinance 75-16 Appointing Body: County Commission.  Each Commission shall appoint two members from his or her District Terms: Serve at the pleasure of the nominating Commission.  Serve until the expiration of the term of the nominating Commissioner Meetings: Bi-monthly (Sep, Nov, Jan, Mar, May), 6:00 pm, Main Library Board Room
Friends of the Library The Friends are members of the community who serve as ambassadors and advocates for Broward County Library Two different groups of Friends: 		Umbrella Friends – incorporated in 1974 		Local Friends 32 chapters - over 2,000 members Role of the Friends: 		Advocate for library needs at the County, state, and 	federal levels 		Fund raise through Book Fairs to supplement the 	Libraries’ budget
Broward Public Library Foundation A nonprofit Foundation incorporated in 1982 Enhances the collections, programs, and services of Broward County Library  Beyond the means of public funding Is a catalyst in sparking private funding and endowments to enrich the Broward County Library
Broward Legislative Delegation The Broward Legislative Delegation Office was created to provide a communication resource between the Legislature and Broward County. It coordinates local activities, workshops, hearings and meetings between Delegation members, the municipalities, the public and Broward County.  This charge includes maintaining an efficient means for the local bill process and monitoring bills approved by the Delegation Members through the Legislature. They are also responsible for monitoring the appropriations process, securing state revenues and other allocated funds for programs, organizations and government agencies in Broward County.

  • 5. Broward County Facts Broward County is 48 miles long and 25 miles wide Broward is the 2nd largest county out of 67 in the State of Florida by population and 15th in the nation. The 2000 Census reported Broward County’s population at 1.62 million. Broward’s current population is 1,734,734 with 100,000 additional seasonal residents and visitors
  • 6. Population growth has been highest in the western areas, such as Weston, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines, as well as in the northwest corner , such as Parkland. These areas have grown 65% or more, since 1990. Slower growth areas are found in the eastern communities such as Dania and Hollywood. One in four residents is under 18 years, including nearly 280,000 school-aged and 103,000 preschool children. One in six residents is aged 65 and older. Reflecting longer life expectancy among women, two thirds of the persons aged 75 and older are female. There are almost 400 centurions living in Broward County. Age Groups

  • 51. Broward Legislative Delegation The Broward Legislative Delegation Office was created to provide a communication resource between the Legislature and Broward County. It coordinates local activities, workshops, hearings and meetings between Delegation members, the municipalities, the public and Broward County. This charge includes maintaining an efficient means for the local bill process and monitoring bills approved by the Delegation Members through the Legislature. They are also responsible for monitoring the appropriations process, securing state revenues and other allocated funds for programs, organizations and government agencies in Broward County.
