  • #13 Jennifer Growing Together PASadena's MISSION Growing Together PASadena, coordinated by the Pasadena Office of the Young Child, is a network of parents and caregivers, service providers, and early childhood advocates that fosters development of children ages 0-5 and supports families with tools and resources to thrive. Each of the sites in our network serve as locations for families with children ages zero to five to access services and the support they need to flourish, with a specific focus on school readiness. Services at each site include: Welcoming space for children ages 0-5 and their families Individualized resources and referrals Parenting support and learning opportunities for children ages 0-5
  • #14 Jennifer I’m really excited about these Mental Health kits that we will be debuting later this year – you all are actually the first to hear about them. These are books and manipulatives all based around a theme to help with social emotional growth and topics for preschoolers. They are currently being cataloged, and will hopefully debut in a few months.
  • #15 Jane These kits are pre packed with equipment, materials, and instructions for a class up to 24 students. 2 week checkouts, must be on a personal library card (not educator card). Can be placed on hold at the front desk. You’ll get to experiment with a couple of them today, and check them out after today’s event.
  • #16 Jane These are not educator sized kits, but could be projects you may want to explore.
  • #17 Jane Book club kits – borrow two kits for a class kit
  • #18 Jane Just wanted to highlight some opportunities for teens. They can publish or be featured in our Teen Zine or Teens Blog. There are copies on the Teen resource table. If you have an idea for partnering with us to feature some of your teens or for extra credit. We have featured poetry from PUSD’s LEARNS afterschool program, and artwork from an art program from Blair – for example. So if you teach teens in Pasadena, and this is something you might want to explore, let me know.
  • #19 Jane These are Youth Mental Health Education Kits. They are kits with a variety of mental health training materials targeted to youth or adults who work with youth. The kits include videos, book, a fully-scripted presentation that you can reuse or adapt, printouts, guides, digital files, and an extensive resource list for youth or educators who would like to implement mental health education in their institution or community. However, even if you do not have space for physical items, you can point youth and educators to our online guide, which has digital copies of most of the items in the kit. The link is there, but you can always go to our website, click teens, then research. We also have a few left to give away today.
  • #20 Since everyone here either works with teens or works with someone who will become a teen, I wanted to plug in a short explanation of the Youth Master Plan in case you hadn’t known about it. Since 2014, with research that was started a decade before that, the Youth Master Plan was created. It is implemented by youth and youth service organizations. Basically, the adults involved—such as myself representing the library, the city’s Youth Ambassadors, Youth Council, Day One, Health Dept, Collaborate PASadena, College Access Plan, and many others, the Plan is being used to drive most of our decision making in services for teens. It provides a blueprint for Pasadena as it seeks to create a community where youth are seen as assets and thus are able to thrive and reach their full potential. Based on tremendous youth input and participation, here are the six priority areas: ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD ENVIRONMENTS – Youth should have access to a variety of high-quality foods available at all times LIFE READY – a Pasadena community that is committed to providing students with access to the arts, professional enrichment, higher education, and meaningful careers. MENTAL HEALTH – To ensure all Pasadena youth are living and thriving in a safe, supportive, and bully-free environment-especially at home, school and all other places where they interact in our community. UNITED YOUTH SUPPORT – create a comprehensive support system that connects all aspects of youth development BUSES & BIKES – access for all youth to an effective and more affordable public transportation system and viable methods to get around Pasadena ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND TOBACCO - Pasadena is committed to advancing positive health by providing youth friendly alcohol & drug prevention intervention and support services to youth. And the primary support systems and events are: --community groups that many youth organizations are a part of --youth network is the teen component of the community groups; this is essentially the teen advisory and advocacy group for the city’s youth master plan; it takes place once a month here in this room. --we host an annual two-day youth leadership conference --and an annual State of the Youth where we revisit the plan with a much larger youth network. The picture is of our most recent state of the youth at PHS, and it was attended by several principals, school board, city council members, and the mayor. Vision for Youth Master Plan is: All of Pasadena’s children and youth can succeed today and tomorrow.
  • #21 Jennifer While it’s only February, that doesn’t mean you’re not looking forward to Summer. Our Summer Reading Program is a great way to encourage kids to keep up their skills during the Summer. Every child who signs up receives a free paperback book to take home and keep (Thanks to the Friends of the Library) Our program will run May 30 – August 1.
