A female fruit fly with no wing bristles was mated to a male fruit fly with dark eyes and no thoracic bristles. Their wild-type female offspring were then mated to males homozygous for the mutations. The resulting progeny showed frequencies of the traits that could be used to determine the gene order and genetic distances between genes on the chromosome.
