Summa Contra Gentiles By Thomas Aquinas
In his book, Summa Contra Gentiles, Thomas Aquinas initiates his consideration of divine nature as
he explores and reflects upon some of the most challenging questions surrounding Catholicism.
Specifically, he focuses on the essence and the existence of God as to provide insight into the
natural ends of human life. Therefore, his consideration and analysis of central Catholic beliefs
allows Catholics to better understand their position as members of a larger structure of human
existence. This paper will analyze the simplicity and existence of divine nature, through an
examination of human wisdom and divine assistance. Before Aquinas begins his consideration of
God's divine essence, he discusses the necessity of wisdom in coming to truly understand ... Show

He speaks to the human desire for happiness, which he defines as the fullness of being. However, he
asserts that we cannot achieve this alone. We require God's grace. This idea is supported by the text
when Aquinas states: For the means must be proportionate to the end: if then man is ordained to an
end transcending his natural capacities, he must be furnished with some supernatural assistance
from heaven, enabling him to tend to that end. (SCG 3.148) Here, Aquinas suggests that grace
perfects nature without distorting it. Accordingly, man was created to be dependent on his creator
and what he provides. This is significant as it implies that man is not able to derive his own holiness
from his will, as in accordance with Pelagian belief. Therefore, much of God's goodness originates
from His willingness to help man get what he

Book Of Acts: Thematic Analysis
Found in the book of Acts chapter fifteen, one can see that certain teachers from Judea insisted on
the necessity of the converted Gentiles to be circumcised. In verse two, Paul and Barnabas are sent
to Jerusalem to consult the apostles on this very subject. The church was in a monumental area of
moving forward, incorporating the Jews and the Gentiles into the church. Gentile conversions were
happening at a rapid pace and a strategy needed to be put in place for the growth and change to be
done correctly. How can this chapter in the book of Acts show us as leaders how Paul handled this
delicate situation in an era of growth and change? This paper will dive into scripture and detail how
best a ministry and its leaders can move forward ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The purification of the heart by the Holy Spirit should have been the main issue, and that alone
which could prepare the soul for a blessed immortality, and the Gentiles had received that without
circumcision. It was by their faith, not their works or actions that made them a part of the fellowship

Adolf Hitler: A Righteous Gentile
A Righteous Gentile was a non Jewish person who risked their life to save jews during the
Holocaust and Edmond Bauduin was one of these people. Despite the fact that they would be killed
if found for helping jews and defying the Nazi party and Hitler who became dictator in Germany,
Edmond Bauduin and many other Righteous Gentiles risked their life to save others.
Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and claimed that it was the jews fault that
germany was bankrupt and in poverty. Then in in August 1934 Hitler officially becomes dictator or

Jews And Gentiles: The Mystery Of Christ
In this epistle Paul is making the point that God's desire is that Jews and Gentiles are united in
position and privilege in Him. Paul is shedding light on the fact that God wants to establish a new
unity where racial and national distinctions disappear in Christ. Christ has broken down the middle
wall of hate and division. The dividing wall of racial enmity has been destroyed once and for all.
The old enmity of personal and national prejudice, and exclusiveness between Jews and Gentiles
was slain at Calvary. God's purpose is one new people (Christian), Christ's body the church. It is one
new man made up of new men (2Cor 5:17–18).
It is only through HIM that we all have access to the Father by the Holy Spirit.

Galatians: Gentile Galaia Allegory
Paul's epistle to the people of Galatia addressed many groups, including Jews, Gentiles, and other
missionaries, among others. Paul established a rebuttal against other missionaries who were using
Abraham as a supporting argument to convert the Gentiles to Judaism by means of circumcision. In
Galatians, Paul understood his Gentile Galatian audience primarily in Jewish terms as he made
connections to them through major figures in Jewish history and the Jewish tradition of
circumcision, uniting the two groups under a single Jewish terminology. Paul understood Gentile
Galatians in a Jewish context by using Jewish historical figures and identifying these figures with
the people of Galatia. An example of this is in Paul's use of an allegory of the story of Hagar and
Sarah (Galatians 4:21–5:1). In this allegory, Paul invited Gentiles into Judaism not by circumcision,
which is what Hagar and the conception of Ishmael through the flesh represents, but through faith
represented by Sarah and the conception of Isaac through Abraham's faith, according to the promise
in Genesis 15. Paul stated in Galatians 4:28, "Now you, my friends, are children of the promise, like
Isaac," which illustrates Paul's portrayal of the Gentiles as children of Abraham and depicts the
people becoming Jewish by faith. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this passage, Paul stated that "those who believe are the descendants of Abraham," which
connected the Gentiles to a Jewish context. Paul told the Gentiles that they do not need circumcision
to become Jewish but instead need to have faith. Paul placed them into a Jewish context by saying
that they only needed faith to be a descendant of Abraham, or a Jew. Like Abraham, if the Gentiles
believed, they would be righteous, which also illustrates the promise that God made to Abraham in
Genesis 14 and why the law of circumcision was unnecessary for the Gentiles to be redeemed by

What Is The Purpose Of Ephesians 4
The book of Ephesians initially begins with a command to "praise the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ" (Eph. 1:3). Paul goes on to explain how Christ has blessed us and redeemed us through
His blood. He states that before our redemption, the Gentiles were "dead in [their] trespasses and
sins" (Eph. 2:1), dictating that the Gentiles are no longer foreigners and strangers to the Jews, "but
fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God's household" (Eph. 2:19). In Ephesians 3, Paul
refers to himself as "the prisoner of the Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles" (Eph. 3:1) and bears
witness to the Gentiles in an effort to teach them the good news. Paul spends a great deal of time
talking about how the Lord has saved the Gentiles and how the generations before them did not
possess the knowledge that the Gentiles are members of the same body in Jesus. In Ephesians 4,
Paul repeats the idea that he is a prisoner for the Lord, and he speaks humbly and persuasively to his
audience, the Gentiles. Ephesians 5 delves into an expanse of imperative commands in which Paul
urges the Gentiles to be imitators of God, or rather to walk in His light.

What Does Ephesians Mean In Chapter 4
Ephesians 4 marks a shift in focus from the actions of God seen in chapters 1–3 to the actions of
humans. More specifically, chapter 4 focuses on the ways in which we (Paul directs this letter to the
people of the church of Ephesus, but it is applicable to all Christians) should live and behave.
Ephesians 4:17–24 consists of general instructions or commands given by Paul to the church of
Ephesus, in which he tells the people there that they should not live as the Gentiles do but that they
should instead walk in God's light and renew their spirits through Christ. Paul spends Ephesians 5–6
delving into specific commands that expand upon the general instructions he gives in 4:17–24.
Ephesians 4:17–24 serves as a simple quick guide for the people of the church of Ephesus to use,
and the rest of Paul's letter serves as the in–depth instruction manual.

Slowly, however, the corrupt members persuade the rest of the church to follow their poor example

gives a sermon that is unabashedly directed towards the church members, essentially reprimanding

forgiveness from God. He instructs the members of the church to stop pursuing such trivial and

Conflict Between Believers Essay example
Conflict Between Believers
Introduction
There is an obvious difference of opinion between two members of the Saint Elizabeth Catholic
Church as it relates to whether as Christian we should celebrate Halloween. Couple A argues that is
not up to Christianity to dictate what they should and should not celebrate, and uses Romans 14:5 to
support their argument. Romans 14:5 reads, "In the same way, some think one day it is more holy
than another day, while others think every day is alike. Each person should have a personal
conviction about this matter" (Romans 14:5, New International Version). It is, therefore, their belief
that they are within their rights to celebrate Halloween, as long as a family they are not dishonoring
God. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A similar conflict between the Gentiles and Jews took place during the early establishment of the
Church. The Jews demanded that the Gentiles adhere to their laws as established by Moses, wherein
they were forbidden from eating certain foods and required that all males be circumcised. McRay
states, "During that time some men came from Jerusalem and tried to lay upon the Gentiles an even
more stringent requirement than the earlier Jerusalem emissaries had done. It was no longer simply
a matter of requiring the Gentiles to observe Jewish food laws in order to maintain fellowship with
Jewish Christians. They were now demanding that Gentiles males be circumcised in order to be
saved" (McRay, 2003, p. 127). Similar to today, these disagreements are presented to the Church
Leadership conflict for resolution. In advising the leadership council of Saint Elizabeth Catholic
church on how to resolve and maintain the fellowship between these believers, I will use Romans 14
as the fundamental basis for handling conflict resolutions.
Relevant Concepts of Romans 14:1–23
The Apostle Paul in Romans 14:1–23, gives us rules on how to manage a handle the difference
between ourselves. It addresses specifically the conflict that occurred in those who had converted to
Christ were transitioning from a divination system based on Mosaic laws to another based on
Christianity. Because of the religious and cultural differences that existed between the Jews and

Letter Of Paul To The Galatians: Different Interpretations...
Christianity is interpreted in different ways depending on one's acquired knowledge of the religion
and its beliefs. There are many different interpretations of Christianity, so the ideal principles of the
religion are sometimes lost. In the Letter of Paul to the Galatians, Paul writes to the Galatians,
addressing their unrighteous actions toward Christianity. Every religion has requirements that the
followers should practice and lived by; this concept also, applies to Christianity. Paul, an apostle,
received his authority from God, which implies that he obeys and understands the laws of
Christianity. Because Paul knows this information, he can determine whether Christian laws are
being followed or misused. Therefore, when Gentiles were misleading the public regarding the
validity of the christian, Paul ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This puts him above other prophets because he directly received his calling from a divine being.
Paul's superiority to the Gentiles implies that he has more accurate knowledge on the validity of the
christian laws since he received his instruction from God, whereas the Gentiles did not receive their
calling from God. Therefore, they are pretending to be righteous by preaching the false laws of
Christianity as the true ones. Paul's statement is superior to the Gentiles in that he uses the "I"
statement in his letter to make it clear to the Galatians that he was the only one who received a
calling from God. The Gentiles are proven to be false, thus making the Galatians public reluctant to
listen to their messages anymore. Paul's authority leaves him as the only credible source of divine
knowledge. Thus, Galatians have little choice but to follow Paul's teaching if they want to be proper
and true Christians, since Christianity is the only way to receive the holy spirit and be connected to

A Jew Of Gentiles By Mark Twain
A Jew of Gentiles
In his essay "Concerning The Jews," Mark Twain marvels over the historic ascendency of Jews in
attempt to counter the burgeoning anti–semitism of his time:
The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no
infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and
aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the
secret of his immortality? (6)

unfulfilled desires, Malamud peels away what it means to be a human being to its very core, from
one's ethnic roots to moral responsibility toward all humanity.
When Bernard's father, Max Malamud, emigrated to New York in the early 1900's, he arrived
penniless and dispirited, a condition seemingly little better than his homeland, Russia. However,
here he was not persecuted for being Jewish, nor was he under the control of an unscrupulous
leader: a fair yet grim trade to his understanding. He found his hope in consolation; he married
Bertha Fidelman, another one of the million Jews who had fled Tsar Alexander III. They soon bore
Bernard Malamud, the eldest of two sons, in the growing but fairly destitute city of Brooklyn on
April 26, 1914. Despite their poor economic plight, Max and Bertha Malamud supported any and all
academic endeavors Malamud pursued, a luxury they themselves never had. Consequently,
Malamud's boyhood, according to his account, was "comparatively happy, school making up
somehow for a meager family life" (qtd. in World Authors). A self–motivated individual, he was a
regular attendee at the Yiddish theater and a budding writer; he considered his surname, derived
from the Yiddish word, malamed, meaning "teacher," to be a desirable fate, and one that would
eventually come true (Davis 8). However, even his name seemed to be twinged with destined
tribulation,

Exploring Gentile Supremacy in George Herbert’s The Jews
Religious liberty and toleration are ideals that we hold dear in the United States of America. We
fight wars in the name of religious liberty and seek to impress upon others these same ideals and the
importance of them. But when do the motives to encourage religious liberty and religious tolerance
become a source of prejudice, and is it possible that the best intentions at tolerance can turn into
intolerance? Arguably this is what happens in George Herbert's poem "The Jew." The Jew is a
twelve line poem that seems simple at first glance, almost too simple, but through careful reading
and dissecting the poem, the layers can be removed and the true motives of the author are revealed.
At first glance this poem may appear to be a sympathetic representation of the Jews, but I will argue
that "The Jew" is not a poem of sympathy to the Jews, nor is it outright anti–Semitism; instead it is a
poem that exemplifies the Church of England, and more specifically the Gentiles. Also, this poem
can be seen as the story of the promise of salvation being removed from the Jews and given to the
Gentiles and the Jews' redemption after their fall from grace, but it is important to note that this
poem is from a Gentile perspective. To read "The Jew" either solely as an anti–Semitic campaign or
as a sympathetic plea to the Jews does not do this poem justice. However, reading this poem as a
cause and effect story can allow one a clearer picture of the action of the poem and it can help the

Comparing Didache's 'Teaching Of The Lord To The Gentiles'
Due to these texts the choice between these two roads becomes a matter of following God and is
emphasized in the preaching towards the Gentiles who were to be won over and converted into the
Church. This idea further corresponds to the second heading that directly refers to the original book
of Didache, contains the words "Teaching of the Lord to the Gentiles" (Διδαχὴ Κυρίου τοῖς Εθνεσιν)
which are fundamentally Jewish in origin. However there are many scholars who see the Didache as
more than only an edit of Jewish ideals into Christian ones for Gentile use but rather a book "that
reveals more about how Jewish–Christians saw themselves and how they adapted their Judaism for
gentiles than any other book in the Christian Scriptures." (Milavec, Faith P.vii) Despite these
slightly different views there is a strong ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

with the 6th–10th commandments. "You shall not murder." "You shall not commit adultery.", "You
shall not steal.", "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your
neighbor's wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male servant, his
female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's." (Deuteronomy 5:13–21).

covet, and so on which can mostly be rooted in the Ten Commandments. Yet

Book Of Acts Essay
BACKGROUND
At the birth of the Early Church there were no Gentiles within the Christian community. The
relationship between Judaism and Christianity became more complex as people began to accept
Gentiles into the church. The book of Acts makes clear to us that the conflict that had arisen was
between two different groups of Jewish people, the Hellenists and the Hebrews. The Hellenists,
although Jewish, were open to a Hellenistic culture unlike the Hebrews, and it was through them
that a connection to the gentile world was created. The Jewish church would eventually wain and
the leaders of the Christian movement proclaiming the Gospel would then become predominantly
Gentile.

Using Antioch as a starting place to proclaim the power of the Gospel, he began his first of three
missionary journeys where he began his gentile mission. Paul's purpose form that time forward was
to bring the Gospel to all areas of the world and to open up the Church for everyone. Following this,
when persecution started to become fierce, the leaders of the Christian community in Jerusalem
made the decision to relocate to the City of Pella which was a gentile city. This provided yet another
opportunity for the Gospel to be proclaimed, and as time progressed the Jewish church found itself
in increasing isolation. Once converts became a part of the Christian movement the primary focus
on Jewish law started to diminish, and the Gentile community within the Church started to grow.
Around 135 CE leadership had passed into the hands of the Gentile Christians. The Law–observant
Jews proved to be unexpectedly resistant to the Gospel and non– observant Gentiles proved to be
unexpectedly receptive. The Jewish hierarchy's rejection of this Christian sect pushed the Church
into gentile territory thus aiding the shift from predominantly Jews to predominantly gentile. With
this being said, it is clear that in the Early days of Christianity the gentile church was closely
connected to the Jewish church that was in Jerusalem. Paul patterned the Gentile

Summary Of According To Polhill What Does It Mean To Test God
. According to Polhill, what does it mean to "test God" (see Acts 15:10, NIV)? Polhill states on
p.327 "How could Jewish Christians demand anything more than the faith already shown? To
demand more would be to put God to the test, to act against God's declared will, to see if God really
meant what He had already shown in accepting Gentiles apart from the law." God had already
decided what was acceptable or not with the Gentiles. The Jewish Christians were trying to add
more to the Gentiles than God had said was needed. By attempting to hold the Gentiles to the same
Mosaic laws that the Jewish Christians were held to, the Jewish Christians were in fact challenging
God's authority over the entire situation. The Mosaic law was not meant to

In previous chapter of Acts 9, Saul was a persecutor of Jesus and the Disciples until Jesus called
Saul and became a believer. In fact, Saul conversion makes him pray, see visions, enjoy acceptance

Argumentative Analysis
Video games impact the brain in a wide variety of ways. Some people could, and have, made the
argument that video games are destructive for children and that they become a distraction from
actual educational work (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). On the other
hand, one could certainly argue that video games could be a valuable tool in the learning
environment (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). At any rate, there are
several different, and accurate views on the subject.
The initial argument I mentioned about video games is probably the one you hear about most often.
How many times have you heard a set of parents say that their child is rotting away in front of a
video game. Well, there is actually some truth to that. Children who show addictive behavior in
regards to video games have also shown symptoms that are typical in addicts of other sorts
(Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). Some domains that are affected by
this type of behavior include behavioral, social, academic, occupational, and developmental

There are also many studies that show how video games increase peripheral perception, processing

on the type of video game a particular person is playing, it can be used as an effective training
scenario(Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). The idea here is that video
games can be used as a productive tool for people of all ages, professions, and lifestyles, if they are
utilized correctly (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). An issue that may
come up is trying to find the happy area in the middle of the people who don't use games at all and

How Magic Plays in the Real World with St. Thomas Aquinas'...
St. Thomas Aquinas was a Dominican professor that began teaching at the University of Paris in the
year 1256, in theology. His works in the field of theology were greatly influenced by Aristotle as
well as Plato. His main goal in the section of his writing, Summa Contra Gentiles, was to explain
how magic was portrayed in the "natural world". He was trying to show non–Christians, especially
Muslims, how Catholic beliefs could be rationalized. All the documents of St. Aquinas's that were
paired together in the section of the book by the editors were detailed works that were seen as
controversial back when they were first published. One of the works in this section, titled

Based off of Aquinas work, Summa Contra Gentiles, one would assume that he did believe in
magic, although he did not come outright and say it. Nevertheless, he informed his readers that
magicians performed their magic not just through God and heavenly ways, but also through celestial
ways. They may not have performed their magic with just God's powers help, yet they would not
have been able to perform with only celestial ways either, they came together hand in hand.
However, he explained that magic that came from the "heavenly bodies" was natural magic.
Therefore, anything that could not be considered natural could not have come from heaven or God.
He also went into greater detail explaining that an inanimate object could not possibly move by
itself through the powers of God or heavenly forces. Aquinas did not speak about witches, however,
his brief mention of pacts having been a necessity to speak to a demon later brought up the issue of
magicians, and even later the issue of witches signing pacts. Throughout this work of his, he spoke
only of magicians and their way of performing magic. In order to perform their magic, he explained
that they were to speak certain words to receive the outcomes they desired. The words did not hold
the power, the magician himself did. To build upon this, very powerful magicians were able to
produce what they desired simply through thought. If someone was able to make what they wanted
to happen with words

Giovanni Bellini
Giovanni Bellini was born in Venice, Italy around 1430. He was the son of Jacopo Bellini, an
esteemed painter at the time, and probably began his career along side his brother as an assistant in
his father's workshop. Though his artwork was influenced by many of his friends and relatives,
Giovanni possessed certain qualities in his compositions which set him apart from the others. He
blended the styles of both his father and brother–in–law, Andrea Mantegna, with his own subtle
appreciation of color and light, the high regard he held for the detail of natural landscape, along with
the very direct human empathy he placed in his painting. These components of Bellini's personal

gods. His source for the composition was Ovid's Fasti, which provides a description of a banquet of
the gods. The figures are spread across the foreground of the picture plane: Satyrs and nymphs
attending to the gods, couples engage in sensual play and others explore various earthly pleasures.

Gentile And Bushman Hypothesis
Hypothesis
Gentile and Bushman (2012) hypothesized that not only exposure to the media violence, but also
other risk factors exclusively and mutually increases the risk of aggression in children.
Individual risk factors increases the likelihood of aggression in children, and the presence of any
shielding factors, such as parental involvement, decreases the likelihood of aggression (Gentile &
Bushman, 2012).
Methodology
For this study, 430 children age ranged from 7 to 11 were recruited from five Minnesota schools;
51% of those children were male, and 86% of total children were Caucasian (Gentile & Bushman,
2012). To conduct this study, students and teachers were surveyed twice and 6 months apart; the
children were provided with a roster

The Romans : Conflict Between The Gentiles And The Jews
In the time Paul was writing to the Romans there was conflict between the Gentiles and the Jews.
Many of today's scholars have presented a number of likely reasons as to why Paul may have
written the book of Romans. One of these believed reasons was for him to address the continued
power struggle between the Gentiles and the Jews. In the book of Romans, Paul encourages unity as
people of God and begs the Jews and Gentiles to have peace and love with not only each other but
with everyone in the world.
It was very likely that Paul wrote his letter to the Romans around 55–56 C.E. while he was on his
third missionary journey. It is also believed that he was in the city of Corinth when he wrote it. Paul
was writing to the church in Rome, which at the time the members were predominately Jewish. At
the time there were approximately 50,000 Jews living in Rome. They either worked as slaves or had
once worked as slaves, but gained their freedom. During this time, the Jews were given special
protection from the Roman government, because they did not have to partake in pagan religious
festivals or worship the Roman emperors. Unfortunately, in the late 40's the emperor, Claudius,
expelled a large number of the Jewish people because of a disturbance over a man named
"Chrestus." Therefore, the church in Rome likely became highly Gentile (Winn). In the event of
these actions by the emperor the leadership of the Roman church became mostly Gentile.

Gentiles, And Galileo Galileo : A Comparison Of The...
Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics, Thomas Aquinas in Summa on Gentiles, and Galileo Galilei in
"Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina" all touch upon the notion of reason. Although all three
authors have different interpretations of the nature of reason, they all impose limitations on utilizing
reason to understand theology. These limitations are ultimately of two natures: a limitation on the
ability of human reasoning and whether a non–rational component is necessary, or a limitation of
the subject matter. Furthermore, the goals in utilizing reason appear to differ amongst the authors.
While Aristotle considers reason as a method of imitating God and a sufficient tool to attain a
likeness of God, both Galileo and Aquinas view reason as a ... Show more content on

The bible "is not chained in every expression to conditions as strict" and "differ[s] from the absolute
truth as far as the bare meaning of the words is concerned...to be accommodated to the
understanding of every man" (Galileo 162–163). Since the true meaning of the words must be
extracted from the Bible, there is an inherent uncertainty that must be illuminated with the truth of
science. The only way to ascertain the true meaning of Scripture is through referring to scientific
conclusions, "the physical conclusions which manifest sense and necessary demonstrations have
previously made certain" (Galileo 246–247). According to Galileo, therefore, "we ought to utilize
[any certainties in physics] as the most appropriate aids in the true exposition of the Bible" as "these
must be concordant with demonstrated truths" (Galileo 175–177). Demonstrated proofs are not only
necessary for reaching scientific conclusions, but are also critical in the interpretation of theological
concepts. Galileo's interpretation of reason, then, is based completely upon demonstrations and is a
form of purely rational thought. Aquinas' evaluation of reason appears similar to that of Galileo at
first glance, but is ultimately of a different nature. Aquinas argues that "things that are not perceived
by the senses cannot be grasped by the human intellect except in so far as knowledge of them is
gathered from the senses" (13–14). As

How Effective Were The Righteous Gentiles
Plan of Investigation
RQ: How effective were the Righteous Gentiles in saving lives during World War II? The Righteous
Gentiles, also known as the Righteous among the Nation were people who stood out among the rest
in the attempt to save the Jews and other victims of the holocaust. Although these people are
recognized today as heroes for helping the Jews, how effective were the Righteous Gentiles in
actually saving their lives? During the time of the Holocaust the Righteous among the Nation tried
to stand up for what was right, through small or extreme actions. In doing so they accepted the
consequences of getting thrown into a camp or of being executed if they were caught helping. They
took it upon themselves to save people who at heart were just like them. Throughout the
investigation, I will attempt to discover if the Righteous Gentiles actually made a difference in the
amount of lives lost. To find an accurate answer, information regarding the Righteous Gentiles will
be gathered and analyzed. Sources such as survival stories and rescue stories will be looked at.
Some of these stories include the story of Mallgorzata and her children, and the story of Bartali.
Along with these stories I will watch the movie Schindler's List to further my understanding on the
Righteous among the Nation. This information will then be analyzed and compared to sufficiently
support evidence for the research question.

Paul's Letter To Romans Analysis
1. Discuss the occasion and purpose for the writing of Romans. Paul's letter to the Romans is held in
high regard by Kostenberger and colleagues, as made evident by this statement, "the book of
Romans may be the most important letter ever penned in human history." It is commonly accepted
that Paul wrote, or dictated, the letters to the churches in Rome around winter of 54–55 AD. This
was a time when the Roman church was facing difficulty finding unity because of Jewish and
Gentile conjectures. Issues began to arise after the Jews were expulsed from Rome around 49 AD.
At that time, the "Gentile congregations developed largely without Jewish influence and thus
without sensitivity to Jewish scruples." Kostenberger believes Paul wrote this letter for a couple of
reasons; first to remind the Romans of gospel truths and his duty to proclaim it to Gentiles, secondly
to unify the Roman church, and finally to, "formally introduce himself to the Roman churches and
solicit their support for the Spanish mission." Kostenberger also believes, "...the multiple ... Show

Paul addresses many issues throughout his letter concerning both people groups. For the Gentiles,
"Paul directly addressed Gentiles using the second person in Rom 11:13, 31 in a rebuke of Gentile
pride over their election by God." And for the Jews, "Paul's rebuke of Jewish pride and hypocritical
self–righteousness in Romans 2 frequently uses the second person and implies that Paul was directly
addressing people of Jewish origin." The early conformation of a church blended of Jews and
Gentiles had the potential to be catastrophic for gospel as intense arguments between Jews and
Gentiles could lead to many people missing the importance of the gospel. "These factors in the
historical setting help explain why much of the letter to the Romans addresses issues of importance
to the relationship between Jewish and Gentile

WHAT MOTIVATED "RIGHTEOUS GENTILES" TO SAVE JEWISH PEOPLE? WAS IT
ALTRUISM , ECONOMIC GAIN OR OTHER REASONS ?
BY JOSHUA GERSOHN
INTRODUCTION
During the Holocaust period (1939–1945) many Jewish lives were saved by non–Jews. These
saviours were referred to as "Righteous Gentiles."
Many hundreds of these non–Jewish people have been honoured for their bravery and personal
sacrifice, of which the German industrialist Oskar Schindler is probably the best known.
We might never know exactly what motivated these individuals or groups to risk torture and death
under the Nazi regime to save one or a thousand Jewish lives– we can merely surmise and try

insanity of Nazism. I just couldn't stand by and see people destroyed. I did what I could, what I had

Paul's Conversion Of Gentiles To Christianity
Paul's first recorded missionary journey resulted in the widespread conversion of Gentiles to
Christianity. Paul's first journey is recorded in the New Testament from Acts 13:4 to Acts 15, and
tells the story of Paul, Barnabas, John and Mark's activities of preaching the Gospel in the areas they
visited, being Cyprus, Antioch in Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra, Derbe, and returning home to Antioch.
This was a journey that saw the Apostles travel a staggering 2250 km around the area of Asia minor,
Syria and Cyprus. Once they returned back to Antioch, they heard word of people preaching that
you had to be Jewish to follow Jesus: "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of
Moses, you cannot be saved"(Acts 15). Paul did not agree with this, ... Show more content on

In doing this, Paul allowed any individual to become a Christian. Before the Council, there were a
huge amount of Gentiles who wanted to become Christian, however, did not want to adopt the
outdated, and quite controlling laws of Judaism. The Council of Jerusalem allowed Gentiles to do
exactly that. As Paul explains "As many of you as were baptised into Christ have clothed yourselves
with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek,...slave or free,...male or female...for all of you are one
in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:27–28), there is no need for Judaism. Paul's actions influenced the
evolution of Christianity by allowing a colossal influx of Gentiles to join, become prophets and
spokespeople for Christianity. This would have increased the potential of new followers to join, due
to a higher number of disciples. Furthermore, Paul transformed the utterance of Christianity by
allowing other the Gentiles to understand christianity from a non Jewish point of view.
Subsequently, this enabled "atheists" of the time to understand what Paul and the other Apostles
were preaching, coming from fellow Gentiles

Giving Voice To Value, By Mary C. Gentile
An individual's morals are usually depicted through the values that one uses to dictate their behavior
when it comes to different situations. Business ethics, in particular, is formatted in a way that
applies ethics to resolve issues within the business environment. Throughout the reading of "Giving
Voice to Value" by, Mary C. Gentile, it has helped me realized some values that I have and how I
would want to commit those to the business world. Being socially responsible for my values
incorporates the act of voicing my own values, therefore I would like to be considered a motivator
within my line of work while also achieving that signature respect from colleagues. Especially by
being given the case regarding Tina's questionable action of ethics, I would like to pursue this by
maintaining my own morals while in the business world. When encountering a potential issue ...

obstacles when trying to achieve a goal, voicing ones opinions is a way to resolve those issues.

Simone De Beauvoir 's View Of A Woman, Black And White,...
In my opinion, Simone de Beauvoir's quote stressed that using specific characteristics to define
certain groups of people was a dangerous practice. To me, Beauvoir's model of identity is one of
great diversity. When reading her work, it was evident that she thinks that all humans are multi–
faceted, and should not be defined by one certain characteristic. Beauvoir believed there was no one
way to be a woman, a person of color, or a Jew. Each group exhibits an array of qualities that make
up individuals, rather than defining categories. She expresses that rejecting the existence of unique
qualities of each group is to deny their plight. By stating that there are no differences between man
and woman, black and white, Jew and gentile is to ignore all the social inequalities assigned to
women, people of color, and Jews by those outside these groups. To support my views on Beauvoir's
outlook, I will use the work of Alexandra Kollontai and Primo Levi to compare the views of another
woman as well as a Jewish man on this issue.
Beauvoir is a French feminist icon who helped establish the idea of feminism not only in France, but
all over the Western world. I believe Beauvoir's opinions on the root causes of sexism can also, to an
extent, be applied to the issues faced by all minority groups in a world dominated mostly by
Protestant white men. To Beauvoir, they are all considered the "Other" by the majority, who are the
"One". The One does not define itself "without immediately setting

Passage Of The Bible : A Letter By The Apostle Paul And...
The entire book of Ephesians in the Bible is a letter, written by the Apostle Paul, to the Gentiles of
Ephesus. Ephesus was a Roman provincial capital in Asia Minor. It was smaller than the cities of
Rome and Alexandria at a mere population size of 250,000. It was, however, one of the richest
regions in the Roman Empire, being that is was a major port for merchants and cargo, and that one
of the more notable accomplishments of the city were is silver smiths. Its primary language was
Greek. The switch of religions caused a significant conflict of religions. The primary religion of
Ephesus was the Artemis Cult until the establishment of the Christian church by the Apostle Paul
and his Gentile followers. In the past (at that time) the Gentiles were separate from Christ, without
hope and without God, and were alienated from Israel. (Patzia, 190–191) The Gentiles were not part
of any covenants with the Old Testament. They were not entitled to any of the provisions that God
had made for, or any of the promises he had made to his people. (Patzia, 191) Throughout different
commentaries on the book of Ephesians, the word 'alienation' appears often whilst describing the
Gentiles. The alienation of the Gentiles consisted mainly of political and economical alienation. The
Gentiles were even alienated in the religious sense; the Jewish scornfully called them "the
uncircumcised". (Stott, 94) Literary Context The genre of Ephesians is a letter. It is part of Paul's
journey through the

True Liberty
Paul's letters to the Roman Gentile's and Jewish leaders in Roman reverberate a statement unlike
any other sermon given in power, instruction, or refutation the church has ever heard. From Paul's
heart one can hear his plea, Know ye not, brethren (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that
the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?" (Romans 7:1 KJV)
Paul uses creation as his foundation to proclaim the gospel. Verse 18 states, "the wrath of God is
revealed from heaven against the ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their
unrighteousness suppress the truth. " Ever since Adams response when question by God "who told
you that thou was naked?"(Gen.3:10–11KJV) man has tried in vain to suppress the truth of God's
word. Therefore, since the suppression of man about God's truth, man's thoughts have become futile
and unnatural towards God's plan for humankind. In return, God has darken humanities heart by
giving all human kind a reprobated mind. (Romans 1:18–25, 3:23KJV) Because of the reprobated
mind, the lust of the flesh leads to death physically and simultaneously a spiritual death. Thus, Paul
is saying that man knows about God from creation, therefore nullifying the excuse of not knowing.
(Romans 1:18–19 KJV)
Paul then enlightens humanity as one, to the nature and mission of Jesus Christ in Romans 8:3–4
KJV. That through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ the bondage of sin has been broken,
that the world might be saved.

Summa Contra Gentiles By Thomas Aquinas
While reading "Summa Contra Gentiles" by Thomas Aquinas I came across the following
concerning Mohammad. "What is more, no wise men, men trained in things divine and human,
believed in him [Mohammad] from the beginning...He perverts almost all the testimonies of the Old
and New Testaments by making them into fabrications of his own, as can be seen by anyone who
examines his law. It was, therefore, a shrewd decision on his part to forbid his followers to read the
Old and New Testaments, lest these books convict him of falsity. It is thus clear that those who place
any faith in his words believe foolishly." It's interesting that throughout Christian history, the
founders of false movements have used the very same tactics. (1) They merge their

Should Gentiles Be Allowed To Be Saved Without Being...
The main issue of the Council of Jerusalem was whether or not you could be accepted as a member
of God's church and be saved without being circumcised. There were many questions and debates
on where they should draw the line. One side of the debate was that salvation was being offered to
everyone regardless of heritage or the keeping of the "customs of Moses". Paul conveyed the great
signs and wonders that had been done among the Gentiles (English Standard Version, Acts 15:12–
13). Peter also testified that God had shown him that the Gentiles would receive the Holy Spirit
(Acts 15:8). If you have already been called by God, repented of your sins, and have the Holy Spirit

1. Paul and Gnosticism.
What was Paul's response to the 1st–century circumcision controversy? What were the characteristic
features (beliefs & practices) of Gnostic Christianity? And in your judgment, can either viewpoint
(or both) be considered 'orthodox' over against the other?
Throughout the early history of Christianity, disputes broke out over mosaic law, particularly in the
mid first century when the issue of circumcision, cutting off the foreskin of a man's penis, was a
heavily debated and a recurring issue among different churches and members of the church. Many
Christians believed that following the mosaic law, which included the act of circumcision, was no
longer required for salvation as having faith and accepting Jesus as the messiah would be enough.
Others, on the other hand, believed that requirements set forth in the mosaic law were still necessary
to be saved. These people were negatively branded with the name Judaizers (those who believed
that all Christians should follow the Law of Moses), and were often criticized for being
discriminatory and elitist. A meeting was then held to discuss the whether the application of the
mosaic law to new members of the Christian community, particularly focusing on if those trying to
convert, were obliged undergo circumcision to be accepted into, and become part of, the Christian
community. The apostolic decree of the council of Jerusalem moved away from its

Analysis: The Way Jews And Gentiles Are Made Righteous By...
Paul's focused discussion examines the way Jews and Gentiles are made righteous by faith rather
than works. It is written that "Paul wants to present the power of the gospel to his readers." In doing
so, using the Old Testament he builds foundations for his argument Paul points out that Abraham's
righteousness had been imputed unto him before circumcision. Paul also "affirms that Christ stood
in our human situation so that "we might become the righteousness of God." As it is written, "So
also Abraham "believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness" (NIV, Galatians 3:6). A

The And Of The Bible
Living in a nation today where people of my own skin color are being discriminated against is a
hard fact to grasp. Personally, by the grace of God, I have never encountered a situation where the
color of my skin has been a problem. This does not deny the fact there is this problem out in the
world. Discrimination can be in many forms race, gender, national origin, religion, disability, and
even age. These many forms of discrimination would cause a division in our nation. Now the church
has tried to find ways to mend this division that is created between people. In Paul's letters to the
Ephesians he addresses this issue. With Peter's letter to the Ephesians he takes a look at the division
between the Jews and then the Gentiles. In the biblical commentaries of the book of Ephesians done
by Harold Hoehner and James Boice, they discus two ways that these verses are talked about.
Hoehner and Bocie talk about how Paul is speaking in the past present and future tense of how the
division in the church came to be, was destroyed and should never happen again. With Paul
identifying the Jews as the circumcised and the Gentiles uncircumcised. This clarification according
to Hoehner shows how the gentiles have no favor or privileges with God like the Jews. Since the
Jews had been given Israel and privileges it is thought that they are better off than the Gentiles
(Hoehner 2002). The Jews therefore have been giving an advantage over the Gentiles (Boice 1988),

Analyzing The Gospel Story Of The Gentile Christianity
The Gentile Christians were well aware of the gospel story, and Luke intended "to assure his readers
of the certainty of what they had been taught" (ESV 1936). Also, the gospel was written in a way
that non–Christians could receive it and understand the good news story, making it a prime tool for
evangelism. Other reasons for writing include "delineating the relationship between Christianity and
Judaism", proving "that Christianity was no threat to the political authority of the Empire", as well
as to clarify and give solutions to problems regarding the end times or the so called second coming
(Allen 9–11). All four gospels share a united goal to portray the events of Jesus' life in a way for
readers to understand the salvation that comes

Summa Contra Gentiles By Thomas Aquinas

  • 1. Summa Contra Gentiles By Thomas Aquinas In his book, Summa Contra Gentiles, Thomas Aquinas initiates his consideration of divine nature as he explores and reflects upon some of the most challenging questions surrounding Catholicism. Specifically, he focuses on the essence and the existence of God as to provide insight into the natural ends of human life. Therefore, his consideration and analysis of central Catholic beliefs allows Catholics to better understand their position as members of a larger structure of human existence. This paper will analyze the simplicity and existence of divine nature, through an examination of human wisdom and divine assistance. Before Aquinas begins his consideration of God's divine essence, he discusses the necessity of wisdom in coming to truly understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He speaks to the human desire for happiness, which he defines as the fullness of being. However, he asserts that we cannot achieve this alone. We require God's grace. This idea is supported by the text when Aquinas states: For the means must be proportionate to the end: if then man is ordained to an end transcending his natural capacities, he must be furnished with some supernatural assistance from heaven, enabling him to tend to that end. (SCG 3.148) Here, Aquinas suggests that grace perfects nature without distorting it. Accordingly, man was created to be dependent on his creator and what he provides. This is significant as it implies that man is not able to derive his own holiness from his will, as in accordance with Pelagian belief. Therefore, much of God's goodness originates from His willingness to help man get what he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Book Of Acts: Thematic Analysis Found in the book of Acts chapter fifteen, one can see that certain teachers from Judea insisted on the necessity of the converted Gentiles to be circumcised. In verse two, Paul and Barnabas are sent to Jerusalem to consult the apostles on this very subject. The church was in a monumental area of moving forward, incorporating the Jews and the Gentiles into the church. Gentile conversions were happening at a rapid pace and a strategy needed to be put in place for the growth and change to be done correctly. How can this chapter in the book of Acts show us as leaders how Paul handled this delicate situation in an era of growth and change? The purification of the heart by the Holy Spirit should have been the main issue, and that alone which could prepare the soul for a blessed immortality, and the Gentiles had received that without circumcision. • 4. Jews And Gentiles: The Mystery Of Christ In this epistle Paul is making the point that God's desire is that Jews and Gentiles are united in position and privilege in Him. Paul is shedding light on the fact that God wants to establish a new unity where racial and national distinctions disappear in Christ. Christ has broken down the middle wall of hate and division. The dividing wall of racial enmity has been destroyed once and for all. The old enmity of personal and national prejudice, and exclusiveness between Jews and Gentiles was slain at Calvary. God's purpose is one new people (Christian), Christ's body the church. It is one new man made up of new men (2Cor 5:17–18). • 5. Galatians: Gentile Galaia Allegory Paul's epistle to the people of Galatia addressed many groups, including Jews, Gentiles, and other missionaries, among others. Paul established a rebuttal against other missionaries who were using Abraham as a supporting argument to convert the Gentiles to Judaism by means of circumcision. In Galatians, Paul understood his Gentile Galatian audience primarily in Jewish terms as he made connections to them through major figures in Jewish history and the Jewish tradition of circumcision, uniting the two groups under a single Jewish terminology. Paul understood Gentile Galatians in a Jewish context by using Jewish historical figures and identifying these figures with the people of Galatia. An example of this is in Paul's use of an allegory of the story of Hagar and Sarah (Galatians 4:21–5:1). In this allegory, Paul invited Gentiles into Judaism not by circumcision, which is what Hagar and the conception of Ishmael through the flesh represents, but through faith represented by Sarah and the conception of Isaac through Abraham's faith, according to the promise in Genesis 15. Paul stated in Galatians 4:28, "Now you, my friends, are children of the promise, like Isaac," which illustrates Paul's portrayal of the Gentiles as children of Abraham and depicts the people becoming Jewish by faith. ... Paul told the Gentiles that they do not need circumcision to become Jewish but instead need to have faith. Paul placed them into a Jewish context by saying that they only needed faith to be a descendant of Abraham, or a Jew. • 7. What Is The Purpose Of Ephesians 4 The book of Ephesians initially begins with a command to "praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Eph. 1:3). Paul goes on to explain how Christ has blessed us and redeemed us through His blood. He states that before our redemption, the Gentiles were "dead in [their] trespasses and sins" (Eph. 2:1), dictating that the Gentiles are no longer foreigners and strangers to the Jews, "but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God's household" (Eph. 2:19). In Ephesians 3, Paul refers to himself as "the prisoner of the Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles" (Eph. 3:1) and bears witness to the Gentiles in an effort to teach them the good news. Paul spends a great deal of time talking about how the Lord has saved the Gentiles and how the generations before them did not possess the knowledge that the Gentiles are members of the same body in Jesus. In Ephesians 4, Paul repeats the idea that he is a prisoner for the Lord, and he speaks humbly and persuasively to his audience, the Gentiles. Ephesians 5 delves into an expanse of imperative commands in which Paul urges the Gentiles to be imitators of God, or rather to walk in His light. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. What Does Ephesians Mean In Chapter 4 Ephesians 4 marks a shift in focus from the actions of God seen in chapters 1–3 to the actions of humans. More specifically, chapter 4 focuses on the ways in which we (Paul directs this letter to the people of the church of Ephesus, but it is applicable to all Christians) should live and behave. Ephesians 4:17–24 consists of general instructions or commands given by Paul to the church of Ephesus, in which he tells the people there that they should not live as the Gentiles do but that they should instead walk in God's light and renew their spirits through Christ. Paul spends Ephesians 5–6 delving into specific commands that expand upon the general instructions he gives in 4:17–24. Every single member of the church becomes bathed in deceitful sin, until finally the church's pastor cannot stand to witness the debauchery that is taking place. • 9. Conflict Between Believers Essay example Conflict Between Believers Introduction There is an obvious difference of opinion between two members of the Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church as it relates to whether as Christian we should celebrate Halloween. Couple A argues that is not up to Christianity to dictate what they should and should not celebrate, and uses Romans 14:5 to support their argument. Romans 14:5 reads, "In the same way, some think one day it is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. Each person should have a personal conviction about this matter" (Romans 14:5, New International Version). It is, therefore, their belief that they are within their rights to celebrate Halloween, as long as a family they are not dishonoring God. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A similar conflict between the Gentiles and Jews took place during the early establishment of the Church. The Jews demanded that the Gentiles adhere to their laws as established by Moses, wherein they were forbidden from eating certain foods and required that all males be circumcised. McRay states, "During that time some men came from Jerusalem and tried to lay upon the Gentiles an even more stringent requirement than the earlier Jerusalem emissaries had done. It was no longer simply a matter of requiring the Gentiles to observe Jewish food laws in order to maintain fellowship with Jewish Christians. They were now demanding that Gentiles males be circumcised in order to be saved" (McRay, 2003, p. 127). Similar to today, these disagreements are presented to the Church Leadership conflict for resolution. In advising the leadership council of Saint Elizabeth Catholic church on how to resolve and maintain the fellowship between these believers, I will use Romans 14 as the fundamental basis for handling conflict resolutions. Relevant Concepts of Romans 14:1–23 The Apostle Paul in Romans 14:1–23, gives us rules on how to manage a handle the difference between ourselves. • 10. Letter Of Paul To The Galatians: Different Interpretations... Christianity is interpreted in different ways depending on one's acquired knowledge of the religion and its beliefs. There are many different interpretations of Christianity, so the ideal principles of the religion are sometimes lost. In the Letter of Paul to the Galatians, Paul writes to the Galatians, addressing their unrighteous actions toward Christianity. Every religion has requirements that the followers should practice and lived by; this concept also, applies to Christianity. Paul, an apostle, received his authority from God, which implies that he obeys and understands the laws of Christianity. Because Paul knows this information, he can determine whether Christian laws are being followed or misused. Therefore, when Gentiles were misleading the public regarding the validity of the christian, Paul ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This puts him above other prophets because he directly received his calling from a divine being. Paul's superiority to the Gentiles implies that he has more accurate knowledge on the validity of the christian laws since he received his instruction from God, whereas the Gentiles did not receive their calling from God. Therefore, they are pretending to be righteous by preaching the false laws of Christianity as the true ones. Paul's statement is superior to the Gentiles in that he uses the "I" statement in his letter to make it clear to the Galatians that he was the only one who received a calling from God. The Gentiles are proven to be false, thus making the Galatians public reluctant to listen to their messages anymore. Paul's authority leaves him as the only credible source of divine knowledge. Thus, Galatians have little choice but to follow Paul's teaching if they want to be proper and true Christians, since Christianity is the only way to receive the holy spirit and be connected to ... • 11. A Jew Of Gentiles By Mark Twain A Jew of Gentiles In his essay "Concerning The Jews," Mark Twain marvels over the historic ascendency of Jews in attempt to counter the burgeoning anti–semitism of his time: The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality? Often they take the course readers most dread, but even in their failed ambition and unfulfilled desires, Malamud peels away what it means to be a human being to its very core, from one's ethnic roots to moral responsibility toward all humanity. When Bernard's father, Max Malamud, emigrated to New York in the early 1900's, he arrived penniless and dispirited, a condition seemingly little better than his homeland, Russia. However, here he was not persecuted for being Jewish, nor was he under the control of an unscrupulous leader: a fair yet grim trade to his understanding. He found his hope in consolation; he married Bertha Fidelman, another one of the million Jews who had fled Tsar Alexander III. They soon bore Bernard Malamud, the eldest of two sons, in the growing but fairly destitute city of Brooklyn on April 26, 1914. Despite their poor economic plight, Max and Bertha Malamud supported any and all academic endeavors Malamud pursued, a luxury they themselves never had. Consequently, Malamud's boyhood, according to his account, was "comparatively happy, school making up somehow for a meager family life" (qtd. in World Authors). A self–motivated individual, he was a regular attendee at the Yiddish theater and a budding writer; he considered his surname, derived from the Yiddish word, malamed, meaning "teacher," to be a desirable fate, and one that would eventually come true (Davis 8). • 12. Exploring Gentile Supremacy in George Herbert’s The Jews Religious liberty and toleration are ideals that we hold dear in the United States of America. We fight wars in the name of religious liberty and seek to impress upon others these same ideals and the importance of them. But when do the motives to encourage religious liberty and religious tolerance become a source of prejudice, and is it possible that the best intentions at tolerance can turn into intolerance? Arguably this is what happens in George Herbert's poem "The Jew." The Jew is a twelve line poem that seems simple at first glance, almost too simple, but through careful reading and dissecting the poem, the layers can be removed and the true motives of the author are revealed. At first glance this poem may appear to be a sympathetic representation of the Jews, but I will argue that "The Jew" is not a poem of sympathy to the Jews, nor is it outright anti–Semitism; instead it is a poem that exemplifies the Church of England, and more specifically the Gentiles. Also, this poem can be seen as the story of the promise of salvation being removed from the Jews and given to the Gentiles and the Jews' redemption after their fall from grace, but it is important to note that this poem is from a Gentile perspective. To read "The Jew" either solely as an anti–Semitic campaign or as a sympathetic plea to the Jews does not do this poem justice. However, reading this poem as a cause and effect story can allow one a clearer picture of the action of the poem and it can help the reader ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Comparing Didache's 'Teaching Of The Lord To The Gentiles' Due to these texts the choice between these two roads becomes a matter of following God and is emphasized in the preaching towards the Gentiles who were to be won over and converted into the Church. This idea further corresponds to the second heading that directly refers to the original book of Didache, contains the words "Teaching of the Lord to the Gentiles" (Διδαχὴ Κυρίου τοῖς Εθνεσιν) which are fundamentally Jewish in origin. However there are many scholars who see the Didache as more than only an edit of Jewish ideals into Christian ones for Gentile use but rather a book "that reveals more about how Jewish–Christians saw themselves and how they adapted their Judaism for gentiles than any other book in the Christian Scriptures." • 14. Book Of Acts Essay BACKGROUND At the birth of the Early Church there were no Gentiles within the Christian community. The relationship between Judaism and Christianity became more complex as people began to accept Gentiles into the church. The book of Acts makes clear to us that the conflict that had arisen was between two different groups of Jewish people, the Hellenists and the Hebrews. The Hellenists, although Jewish, were open to a Hellenistic culture unlike the Hebrews, and it was through them that a connection to the gentile world was created. The Jewish church would eventually wain and the leaders of the Christian movement proclaiming the Gospel would then become predominantly Gentile. Using Antioch as a starting place to proclaim the power of the Gospel, he began his first of three missionary journeys where he began his gentile mission. Paul's purpose form that time forward was to bring the Gospel to all areas of the world and to open up the Church for everyone. Following this, when persecution started to become fierce, the leaders of the Christian community in Jerusalem made the decision to relocate to the City of Pella which was a gentile city. This provided yet another opportunity for the Gospel to be proclaimed, and as time progressed the Jewish church found itself in increasing isolation. Once converts became a part of the Christian movement the primary focus on Jewish law started to diminish, and the Gentile community within the Church started to grow. Around 135 CE leadership had passed into the hands of the Gentile Christians. The Law–observant Jews proved to be unexpectedly resistant to the Gospel and non– observant Gentiles proved to be unexpectedly receptive. The Jewish hierarchy's rejection of this Christian sect pushed the Church into gentile territory thus aiding the shift from predominantly Jews to predominantly gentile. With this being said, it is clear that in the Early days of Christianity the gentile church was closely connected to the Jewish church that was in Jerusalem. Paul patterned the Gentile ... • 15. Summary Of According To Polhill What Does It Mean To Test God . According to Polhill, what does it mean to "test God" (see Acts 15:10, NIV)? Polhill states on p.327 "How could Jewish Christians demand anything more than the faith already shown? To demand more would be to put God to the test, to act against God's declared will, to see if God really meant what He had already shown in accepting Gentiles apart from the law." God had already decided what was acceptable or not with the Gentiles. The Jewish Christians were trying to add more to the Gentiles than God had said was needed. By attempting to hold the Gentiles to the same Mosaic laws that the Jewish Christians were held to, the Jewish Christians were in fact challenging God's authority over the entire situation. Some people could, and have, made the argument that video games are destructive for children and that they become a distraction from actual educational work (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). On the other hand, one could certainly argue that video games could be a valuable tool in the learning environment (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). At any rate, there are several different, and accurate views on the subject. The initial argument I mentioned about video games is probably the one you hear about most often. How many times have you heard a set of parents say that their child is rotting away in front of a video game. Well, there is actually some truth to that. Children who show addictive behavior in regards to video games have also shown symptoms that are typical in addicts of other sorts (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). His works in the field of theology were greatly influenced by Aristotle as well as Plato. His main goal in the section of his writing, Summa Contra Gentiles, was to explain how magic was portrayed in the "natural world". He was trying to show non–Christians, especially Muslims, how Catholic beliefs could be rationalized. All the documents of St. Aquinas's that were paired together in the section of the book by the editors were detailed works that were seen as controversial back when they were first published. Based off of Aquinas work, Summa Contra Gentiles, one would assume that he did believe in magic, although he did not come outright and say it. Nevertheless, he informed his readers that magicians performed their magic not just through God and heavenly ways, but also through celestial ways. They may not have performed their magic with just God's powers help, yet they would not have been able to perform with only celestial ways either, they came together hand in hand. However, he explained that magic that came from the "heavenly bodies" was natural magic. Therefore, anything that could not be considered natural could not have come from heaven or God. He also went into greater detail explaining that an inanimate object could not possibly move by itself through the powers of God or heavenly forces. Aquinas did not speak about witches, however, his brief mention of pacts having been a necessity to speak to a demon later brought up the issue of magicians, and even later the issue of witches signing pacts. Throughout this work of his, he spoke only of magicians and their way of performing magic. In order to perform their magic, he explained that they were to speak certain words to receive the outcomes they desired. The words did not hold the power, the magician himself did. To build upon this, very powerful magicians were able to produce what they desired simply through thought. If someone was able to make what they wanted to happen with words ... He was the son of Jacopo Bellini, an esteemed painter at the time, and probably began his career along side his brother as an assistant in his father's workshop. Though his artwork was influenced by many of his friends and relatives, Giovanni possessed certain qualities in his compositions which set him apart from the others. He blended the styles of both his father and brother–in–law, Andrea Mantegna, with his own subtle appreciation of color and light, the high regard he held for the detail of natural landscape, along with the very direct human empathy he placed in his painting. • 22. The Romans : Conflict Between The Gentiles And The Jews In the time Paul was writing to the Romans there was conflict between the Gentiles and the Jews. Many of today's scholars have presented a number of likely reasons as to why Paul may have written the book of Romans. One of these believed reasons was for him to address the continued power struggle between the Gentiles and the Jews. In the book of Romans, Paul encourages unity as people of God and begs the Jews and Gentiles to have peace and love with not only each other but with everyone in the world. It was very likely that Paul wrote his letter to the Romans around 55–56 C.E. while he was on his third missionary journey. It is also believed that he was in the city of Corinth when he wrote it. Paul was writing to the church in Rome, which at the time the members were predominately Jewish. At the time there were approximately 50,000 Jews living in Rome. They either worked as slaves or had once worked as slaves, but gained their freedom. During this time, the Jews were given special protection from the Roman government, because they did not have to partake in pagan religious festivals or worship the Roman emperors. Unfortunately, in the late 40's the emperor, Claudius, expelled a large number of the Jewish people because of a disturbance over a man named "Chrestus." Therefore, the church in Rome likely became highly Gentile (Winn). In the event of these actions by the emperor the leadership of the Roman church became mostly Gentile. Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics, Thomas Aquinas in Summa on Gentiles, and Galileo Galilei in "Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina" all touch upon the notion of reason. Although all three authors have different interpretations of the nature of reason, they all impose limitations on utilizing reason to understand theology. These limitations are ultimately of two natures: a limitation on the ability of human reasoning and whether a non–rational component is necessary, or a limitation of the subject matter. Furthermore, the goals in utilizing reason appear to differ amongst the authors. While Aristotle considers reason as a method of imitating God and a sufficient tool to attain a likeness of God, both Galileo and Aquinas view reason as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the true meaning of the words must be extracted from the Bible, there is an inherent uncertainty that must be illuminated with the truth of science. The only way to ascertain the true meaning of Scripture is through referring to scientific conclusions, "the physical conclusions which manifest sense and necessary demonstrations have previously made certain" (Galileo 246–247). According to Galileo, therefore, "we ought to utilize [any certainties in physics] as the most appropriate aids in the true exposition of the Bible" as "these must be concordant with demonstrated truths" (Galileo 175–177). Demonstrated proofs are not only necessary for reaching scientific conclusions, but are also critical in the interpretation of theological concepts. Galileo's interpretation of reason, then, is based completely upon demonstrations and is a form of purely rational thought. Aquinas' evaluation of reason appears similar to that of Galileo at first glance, but is ultimately of a different nature. Aquinas argues that "things that are not perceived by the senses cannot be grasped by the human intellect except in so far as knowledge of them is gathered from the senses" (13–14). As ... The Righteous Gentiles, also known as the Righteous among the Nation were people who stood out among the rest in the attempt to save the Jews and other victims of the holocaust. Although these people are recognized today as heroes for helping the Jews, how effective were the Righteous Gentiles in actually saving their lives? During the time of the Holocaust the Righteous among the Nation tried to stand up for what was right, through small or extreme actions. In doing so they accepted the consequences of getting thrown into a camp or of being executed if they were caught helping. They took it upon themselves to save people who at heart were just like them. Throughout the investigation, I will attempt to discover if the Righteous Gentiles actually made a difference in the amount of lives lost. To find an accurate answer, information regarding the Righteous Gentiles will be gathered and analyzed. Sources such as survival stories and rescue stories will be looked at. Some of these stories include the story of Mallgorzata and her children, and the story of Bartali. Paul's letter to the Romans is held in high regard by Kostenberger and colleagues, as made evident by this statement, "the book of Romans may be the most important letter ever penned in human history." It is commonly accepted that Paul wrote, or dictated, the letters to the churches in Rome around winter of 54–55 AD. This was a time when the Roman church was facing difficulty finding unity because of Jewish and Gentile conjectures. Issues began to arise after the Jews were expulsed from Rome around 49 AD. At that time, the "Gentile congregations developed largely without Jewish influence and thus without sensitivity to Jewish scruples." Kostenberger believes Paul wrote this letter for a couple of reasons; first to remind the Romans of gospel truths and his duty to proclaim it to Gentiles, secondly to unify the Roman church, and finally to, "formally introduce himself to the Roman churches and solicit their support for the Spanish mission." Kostenberger also believes, "...the multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paul addresses many issues throughout his letter concerning both people groups. In my opinion, Simone de Beauvoir's quote stressed that using specific characteristics to define certain groups of people was a dangerous practice. To me, Beauvoir's model of identity is one of great diversity. When reading her work, it was evident that she thinks that all humans are multi– faceted, and should not be defined by one certain characteristic. Beauvoir believed there was no one way to be a woman, a person of color, or a Jew. Each group exhibits an array of qualities that make up individuals, rather than defining categories. She expresses that rejecting the existence of unique qualities of each group is to deny their plight. By stating that there are no differences between man and woman, black and white, Jew and gentile is to ignore all the social inequalities assigned to women, people of color, and Jews by those outside these groups. To support my views on Beauvoir's outlook, I will use the work of Alexandra Kollontai and Primo Levi to compare the views of another woman as well as a Jewish man on this issue. Beauvoir is a French feminist icon who helped establish the idea of feminism not only in France, but all over the Western world. I believe Beauvoir's opinions on the root causes of sexism can also, to an extent, be applied to the issues faced by all minority groups in a world dominated mostly by Protestant white men. Ephesus was a Roman provincial capital in Asia Minor. It was smaller than the cities of Rome and Alexandria at a mere population size of 250,000. It was, however, one of the richest regions in the Roman Empire, being that is was a major port for merchants and cargo, and that one of the more notable accomplishments of the city were is silver smiths. Its primary language was Greek. The switch of religions caused a significant conflict of religions. The primary religion of Ephesus was the Artemis Cult until the establishment of the Christian church by the Apostle Paul and his Gentile followers. True Liberty Paul's letters to the Roman Gentile's and Jewish leaders in Roman reverberate a statement unlike any other sermon given in power, instruction, or refutation the church has ever heard. From Paul's heart one can hear his plea, Know ye not, brethren (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?" (Romans 7:1 KJV) Paul uses creation as his foundation to proclaim the gospel. Verse 18 states, "the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against the ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. " Ever since Adams response when question by God "who told you that thou was naked?"(Gen.3:10–11KJV) man has tried in vain to suppress the truth of God's word. Therefore, since the suppression of man about God's truth, man's thoughts have become futile and unnatural towards God's plan for humankind. In return, God has darken humanities heart by giving all human kind a reprobated mind. (Romans 1:18–25, 3:23KJV) Because of the reprobated mind, the lust of the flesh leads to death physically and simultaneously a spiritual death. Thus, Paul is saying that man knows about God from creation, therefore nullifying the excuse of not knowing. (Romans 1:18–19 KJV) Paul then enlightens humanity as one, to the nature and mission of Jesus Christ in Romans 8:3–4 KJV. What was Paul's response to the 1st–century circumcision controversy? What were the characteristic features (beliefs & practices) of Gnostic Christianity? And in your judgment, can either viewpoint (or both) be considered 'orthodox' over against the other? Throughout the early history of Christianity, disputes broke out over mosaic law, particularly in the mid first century when the issue of circumcision, cutting off the foreskin of a man's penis, was a heavily debated and a recurring issue among different churches and members of the church. Many Christians believed that following the mosaic law, which included the act of circumcision, was no longer required for salvation as having faith and accepting Jesus as the messiah would be enough. Others, on the other hand, believed that requirements set forth in the mosaic law were still necessary to be saved. These people were negatively branded with the name Judaizers (those who believed that all Christians should follow the Law of Moses), and were often criticized for being discriminatory and elitist. A meeting was then held to discuss the whether the application of the mosaic law to new members of the Christian community, particularly focusing on if those trying to convert, were obliged undergo circumcision to be accepted into, and become part of, the Christian community. • 37. Analysis: The Way Jews And Gentiles Are Made Righteous By... Paul's focused discussion examines the way Jews and Gentiles are made righteous by faith rather than works. It is written that "Paul wants to present the power of the gospel to his readers." In doing so, using the Old Testament he builds foundations for his argument Paul points out that Abraham's righteousness had been imputed unto him before circumcision. Paul also "affirms that Christ stood in our human situation so that "we might become the righteousness of God." As it is written, "So also Abraham "believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness" (NIV, Galatians 3:6). A Shining ray spotlights time elapsed between Abraham being deemed righteous and his circumcision. As it is written, "the righteousness, Paul points ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The And Of The Bible Living in a nation today where people of my own skin color are being discriminated against is a hard fact to grasp. Personally, by the grace of God, I have never encountered a situation where the color of my skin has been a problem. This does not deny the fact there is this problem out in the world. Discrimination can be in many forms race, gender, national origin, religion, disability, and even age. These many forms of discrimination would cause a division in our nation. Now the church has tried to find ways to mend this division that is created between people. In Paul's letters to the Ephesians he addresses this issue. With Peter's letter to the Ephesians he takes a look at the division between the Jews and then the Gentiles. In the biblical commentaries of the book of Ephesians done by Harold Hoehner and James Boice, they discus two ways that these verses are talked about. Hoehner and Bocie talk about how Paul is speaking in the past present and future tense of how the division in the church came to be, was destroyed and should never happen again. Since the Jews had been given Israel and privileges it is thought that they are better off than the Gentiles (Hoehner 2002). The Jews therefore have been giving an advantage over the Gentiles (Boice 1988), Now since they are both in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Analyzing The Gospel Story Of The Gentile Christianity The Gentile Christians were well aware of the gospel story, and Luke intended "to assure his readers of the certainty of what they had been taught" (ESV 1936). Also, the gospel was written in a way that non–Christians could receive it and understand the good news story, making it a prime tool for evangelism. Other reasons for writing include "delineating the relationship between Christianity and Judaism", proving "that Christianity was no threat to the political authority of the Empire", as well as to clarify and give solutions to problems regarding the end times or the so called second coming (Allen 9–11). All four gospels share a united goal to portray the events of Jesus' life in a way for readers to understand the salvation that comes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
