AND STUDENT PARTNERSHIP IN NURSING EDUCATION

Flow of Presentation
 To understand meaning of Pedagogy.
 To list out existing problems with
teaching methods
 To illustrate objectives of innovative
pedagogy.
 To understand innovative pedagogy.
 Is pedagogy enough for student
engagement in learning process?
 Summery of session 2
Meaning Of Pedagogy
Pedagogy is of Greek origin
Pedagogy = paidi (child) + ago (guide)
It’s a method & Practice of Teaching
3
Pedagogy is the art and science of helping kids learn
What are the problems in traditional teaching
methodology:
 Examination oriented attitude
 Teaching limited to syllabus only
 One way teaching
 Less or no coordination with other discipline or
subjects
 Less coordinated application
 Quality of students (Absence of thinking, almost no creativity or innovative idea)
 Quality of teachers (traditional mind set, afraid with technology)
4
Q. Why we need pedagogical innovations?
Are traditional methods of teaching not enough?
Answer: YES, its not enough. Evidence said:
5
24 hours after a training with traditional teaching,
only an average of 5% of the content is retained
And 90 % when the learner teaches the new
acquisitions directly to the co-workers
According to the learning pyramid - Laboratoire du Maine
AVERAGE RETENTION RATES /THE LEARNING PYRAMID
90% Teaching Others
75% Practice By Doing
50% Group Discussion

How do we remember:
7
10% of what we hear
20% of what we hear and see
40% of what we discuss and
80% of what we do
I hear and I forget
I see and I believe
I do and I understand
Other objectives of innovative Pedagogy:
 Create Outcome Based Education (OBE)
 Move from teacher- centered to student-centered
 Shift from teaching/instruction Paradigm to learning
paradigm
 Shifting knowledge gaining from memorizing to
performing
 More flexible educational system
 Competency based curriculum
 To improve practices
 Improving the Return on Investment of training
actions 8
What can be achieved through innovative
pedagogy:
 Technology friendly
 Inter-disciplinary approach
 Collaborative approach
 Project based learning
 Problem solving
 Critical thinking enhancement
9
Pedagogy nursing educators may apply:
 Simulation technology
 Virtual reality
 Webinars
 Introducing smart class rooms
 Critical thinking
 Skill based evaluation system (implementation of
OSCE/OSPE)
 Evidence based nursing
 Integrative systems- you tube, e-learning
 MOOC (Massive Open Online Learning) 10

Is pedagogy enough for student engagement in
learning process in Higher Education?
Answer: NO
Why?
14
If, No pedagogy then what?
Andragogy
Andragogy is the art and science of helping adults
learn
 Why it is better then Pedagogy?
Pedagogy = paidi (child) + ago (guide)
Andragogy = andras (man) + ago (guide)

Comparative note between Pedagogy and Andragogy

Pedagogy Andragogy
Methods and practices used in teaching
children
Methods and practices used in teaching adults
Children are not self-directed; depend on their
teachers throughout the learning process.
Adult learners are self directed; they have
control over their learning experience.
Teachers should be responsible not only of
what will be taught, but also of how it will
be taught and evaluated.
Learners are 100% responsible for their own
learning
Learners are less experience Learners are more experience which bring
more diversity in learning
Children are usually told what to learn; the
reason behind their learning is developing
their skills to achieve the next level of mastery.
Adults need to know why to learn something;
as soon as they answer this question, they are
ready to start
Children are mostly motivated by extrinsic
factors, such as getting good grades or other
perks, or avoiding the consequences of failure.
Intrinsic motivators; self-esteem, self-
confidence, desire for better quality of life,
curiosity, self-development, and recognition
helps to learn
17
Pathway
As educators, we should be leading our students on a
path that results in “Self-Directed learning:
18
Teacher-
centric
instruction
Student-
centric
instructions
Self-Directed
Learning
Summery
 Students should be motivated towards self-directed to
self-determined learning.
 Educators should remember learning pyramid.
 Student participation is equally important in class
room and clinical learning
 Educators and administrators should put their efforts
to shift teaching paradigm form:
Teacher-centric to Student-centric
or
Teaching to Learning
or
Memorizing to Performing 19
