Raising Achievement of Ethnic Minority Children
RAISING ACHIEVEMENT OF ETHNIC MINORITY PUPILS
ABSTRACT
This literature review would explore the barriers in raising educational achievements of ethnic
minority students. As this is a broad area of concern the literature would examine two main barriers
such as social background issues and English as Additional Language (EAL) while briefly looking
at other barriers such as... Statistical data collected from the Pupil Level Annual School Census
(PLASC) 2002 would be analysed in respect to this group social economic status and its effect on
their learning. The literature would outline the significance of raising achievement, particularly ICT
teacher's responsibility. This report would identify some strategies/solutions including pedagogical

Some schools are 'institutionally racist', says Oftsed's Director of Inspections, Jim Rose – to the
annoyance of teachers' unions. Mr Rose said "Much of that [racism], we think, is to do with
unwitting stereotyping of youngsters and the lack of expectation or lowered expectation of teachers
as a result of that sometimes (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/294078.stm)".
With the fact that their "ethnicity influences their class and their class influences their attitude",
there is concern about the aspirations of underprivileged children "socio–economic barriers may
hinder aspiration formation for these children because of lack of mentors, opportunities, and
resources and also doubt their ability to attain in learning"
(http://www.learningbenefits.net/Publications/ResReps/ResRep27.pdf pg3)
The majority of schools are engaged in a wide variety of initiatives to improve provision and raise
the attainment of all pupils. However, few schools monitor these activities systematically and rarely
do they have a specific ethnic focus.

Single Mothers Raising Children On One Income
This table demonstrates there are less married households than the national average with the deficit
being 10.1 percent. It also shows a significant increase in households without fathers compared to
the national average. This demonstrates there are many more single mothers raising children on one
income than nationally. Shelby County also has more of its population living alone than the nation.
In 2014, the average household size was comparatively equal with the U.S. The average family size
was also relatively the same as the countries. Table 3: Shelby County and the U.S. labor and income

Raising Children

Having children comes as natural as eating; being a good parent comes only with a little work and
effort. So many times in our society we see examples of bad parenting. No child is born with a how
to manual and this is why the whole family needs to be involved in the child's life. There use to be
an old saying "It takes a community to raise a child", but to many times it is the community that has
became the most dangerous to the child. Doing my research for this paper I have found numerous
resources available to parents to help them along the way. This paper will look at good parenting
techniques using "The Top Ten Parenting Tips" by DR ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children cannot develop a moral compass unless people around them use the clear, sharp language
of right and wrong." I agree with this totally. Never should anyone have cause to curse at their
children. I have always told my children cursing is a sign of poor communication skills. I have
never spoken to my children like a baby. Speak to your children like people and they will develop a
vocabulary like a person should, provide them with a dictionary so they can look up words they did
not understand during the conversation or allow them to ask during the conversation. Following this
as developed its own problems in life; all my children have had issues with talking with children of
their own age due to the level of conversation. "Punish with a loving heart. Today, punishment has a
bad reputation. The results are guilt–ridden parents and self–indulgent, out–of–control children.
Children need limits. They will ignore these limits on occasion. Reasonable punishment is one of
the ways human beings have always learned. Children must understand what punishment is for and
know that its source is parental love." I agree with this statement in it's entirely. In today's society
government has made it a bad thing for children to be punished. I think a tap on the bottom is fine
when they are young to teach them right from wrong. I have never seen a reason to raise the voice.
Take the child into a room explain what they did wrong and what the

Thematic Essay On Raising Our Children
Raising a child can be a very difficult thing, especially considering that now studies have shown that
our parenting has a huge effect on who our children turn out to be. So what should our goal for our
children be? Well, there are serval verses in the bible that talk about what goals we should have as a
parent; for example, Rom. 8:28–29 talks about how we as a parent should aim to aid God in
conforming our children to the image of God. Now what does this mean? It means we should train
our children to be obedient, to love, to care, and to trust, we are to train them to be an advocate for
God. Then comes the question how are we to do this? For the answer to this question we must turn
to the bible, for the bible [being seen as the written word of God] is exactly the place to find out
how God intends parents to raise their children. There are 4 common themes in the biblical
scriptures about parenting and raising children in the bible, these common themes are;
correction/discipline, teaching, loving and nurturing.
These 4 themes all in some way go hand and hand, each one seemingly leading into another. First
comes correction/discipline which are pretty much the same phase, first we see something we need
to correct in our child, perhaps this is something like stealing money off the counter. Then once we
identify the action we talk to them about it, we ask them why they did it and ... Show more content

However, often this is under the misunderstanding that providing love simply means providing food,
clothing and shelter and simply saying I love you every once in a while. But, what to provide love
actually means to be there for your child, to love on them, to teach them, to care for them and to be
present. Being present doesn't necessarily mean being physically with them all the time, but what it
does mean is that when you are with them you need to actually be acknowledging

Interracial families are becoming more and more prevalent in the United States. While parenting a
biracial child may have its positives and negatives, a constant is the subject of "race" will be brought
up in their family. Biracial children and their parents may face many challenges along the way with
self–identity which may impose a factor in the way the function as a family unit. According to the
U.S. Census Bureau (2010), interracial families grew to over 2.9 million from 1.7 million in 2000.

Parenthood Can Bring Stress On The Job Of Raising Children
Parenthood can bring stress to the job of raising children, but being a single mother is one of the
most difficult things a woman can be. In today's society, being a single mother is getting to become
more common in the United States. Most of the time it is due to teenagers having unprotected sex at
a young age or if you are an older single mother, it could be because of death, divorce, etc. It can be
challenging being a single mother because you're doing what was designed to be a two–person job. I
know this from experience because my mom is a single mother who raised four children. Most
likely single mothers have to get two jobs just to support herself and her children especially if they
do not have a high school or college degree. In addition, single mothers have less alone time
because they have to be with their children at all times. Also being a single mother leads to being
overloaded with too many tasks which leads to feeling overwhelmed. I think single mothers are the
most multi tasked people in the world. It is difficult for a single mother to have one minimum wage
job and raise a kid because that one job will not be able to pay all the bills and put food on the table,
so single mothers have to get two jobs just to make ends meet. I remember seeing my mom getting
ready for her first job at four in the morning. I can tell that it took a toll on her body because she
would have bags under her eyes from not getting a complete eight hours of sleep. Sometimes she

Gender Roles Of Civic Duties And Raising Children
Throughout Vibia Perpetua's life, Roman society expected her to follow structured gender roles of
civic duties and raising children in her community because she was female. Perpetua defied the
expectations placed upon her since birth by converting to Christianity and used the freedom of the
Christian religion to show her independence and create her own role as a woman. This essay will
analyze Perpetua 's defiance of the gender expectations of civic hood and motherhood of the Roman
community, and how the Christian community allowed her to define her own identity as a woman
on her own terms in conflicting societies.
In Perpetua's time, the role of a woman within the Roman culture was determined narrowly against
gendered expectations. Early Roman society families had a patriarchal structure meaning the father
was the head of the family. The strongest tie within the family was that between a father and a
daughter. Daughters were expected to "[forge] political and social ties" for fathers (Salisbury 6). A
Roman daughter was favored the most; they received the best education overseen by their fathers.
The purpose of a strong education was "to pass on to their sons the values of Rome" as well as help
her to be a good mother in the future (Salisbury 7). One expectation of a woman in the Roman
culture was reproduction in order to continue lineage. In addition to structured family and social
rules, Roman women joined cults with specific rituals for females to perform. A woman's role

Raising Children In The Twenty First Century
Raising kids in the twenty first century challenges parents more than ever. Culture calls out to kids,
wanting to form them, while many parents want their kids to grow up with a biblical background
and faith–based set of values. So how can a parent ride against the tide of culture to raise strong kids
with strong faith? Church attendance certainly makes a different, but parents need to be parents, and
they need to use the resources that we have available today.
Consult your local Christian book store, or even the Christian section of a secular book store. You
will be amazed at the resources out there that can give you the answers you need to help raising
your children.
Both parents should seek out additional resources. Many times just the

Raising Children With ADD/ADHD Essay
Parents who have children with ADD or ADHD know that finding something that works can be
challenging. The internet offers a plethora of information for parents who want to find resources,
strategies and advice for raising children with ADD and ADHD. Many experts and parents agree
that children with ADD and ADHD benefit from exercise and youth sports. Discover how your child
with ADD/ADHD can benefit from the youth sports and regular exercise. Benefits of Youth Sports
Exercise is great for children with ADD and ADHD because it addresses all the things that trouble
the child. For many children with ADD/ADHD, they find it difficult to fit it socially, academically
and within their own families. Outsiders often refer to children with ADD/ADHD as lazy, rude,
misbehaved and hyper. The truth is that your child is none of these things; your child has a disorder
that makes it difficult to control spontaneous actions and words, to focus, and to visualize beyond an
immediate feeling or action. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
School is especially difficult because classrooms are designed with a certain child in–mind, and
children with ADD/ADHD do not fit the model. Children with ADD/ADHD find it difficult to sit
still, focus on one task for a long time, and to remain calm when certain tasks drag on. These are just
a few reasons why children with ADD/ADHD need youth sports and regular exercise. Sport and
exercise do the following: Increase production of dopamine to improve focus Produce endorphins
that allow children to feel better and control anxiety Relieve stress Focus excess energy and
restlessness Boost self–esteem Redirect

Raising Children: Article Analysis
The article ("Raising Children: A Character–based Approach To Residential Child Care",2014)
disguises how the understanding of ethical behaviour is difficult to teach to a young child. We don't
have the same perspective on life as the child and we don't know what they go through in their
everyday lives, so it's difficult to show them the importance of ethical behaviour. In order to grow
well we must develop some of the following virtues wisdom, justice, courage, temperance (Barnes

Illusions of Success For years now, many students have thought "How do I grow up too be
successful?" but the truth here is that the people asking this, don't know what success really means
to them. Accomplishment can be defined in a variety of ways, such as the amount of money a
person makes, how happy an individual is by themselves, or even achieving in the simple things in
life. You can, however, gain the characteristics needed to be successful in the future, for example,
patience, determination, and a straight mindset. Accidental effects can also come into play, for
instance dumb luck that can happen to anybody and the wealth gap between the person or the school
they attend. These are just three of the most important traits a scholar must have in order to get
somewhere in their future of education and in life down the path they may take.
In the short article "Don't Eat the Marshmallow" by Joachim de Posada, it tells an experiment that

Children Dealing with Life and Death
Most children ponder the thought of what life would be like without their parents. They imagine
how amazing and fun a life filled with jokes and no rules would be. Not even having to go to school
if you did not want to. Except this is not how life works. When a parent dies and the reality sets in,
it quickly shows us that life is not all fun and games. The death of a parent is a devastating reality
for any young child to bare. This abrupt reality may have long lasting effects as each child has their
own unique way of perceiving life's events. In the blink of an eye ones world may be completely
twisted around. This kind of tragedy has the ability to shape a child in both negative and positive
ways. They are now faced with the task of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another type of death is one by tragedy that can be unexpected and can be more devastating than
prolonged death in that it occurs suddenly and without notice. More often than not parents die
unexpectedly and their children are left behind in a big scary world with no guidelines on how to
survive. In part this is because parents do not expect to die while their child or children are still
young. Planning ahead for the future can be difficult for parents emotionally as well as culturally
and in some cases even financially. Initially when a parent dies it seems as if they have all the
support in the world by people who love them. Most people seem to think that after a year or more
children should be well adjusted, happy and have made it through their traumatic loss. A child's
perspective may seem different in fact they may feel more alone. A child named Abby had this to
say about that topic "The pain got worse! Because the initial shock wears off, people stop coming to
your house, and you are left....with yourself" (Simon, Johnson 49). What most people do not realize
is that they still are not okay.
No one can completely prepare for the unknown when a child loses a parent no one can predict how
each child will grieve. The caretaker of the child who is grieving has the responsibility of trying to
understand the child's thoughts or questions. When a child's parent has died adjusting to a new way
of life can be extremely difficult

Raising Bilingual Children Essay
Here are the most persistent myths on raising bilingual children:
"Your child will be confused by learning more than one language."
This belief is prevalent in monolingual countries and has far more politics than science to back it up.
Rest assured that your child's little brain has more than enough neurons firing to cope with two
languages (or even more) without frizzing out. On the contrary, decades of research in countless
studies actually show significant cognitive advantages to being multilingual. And what about the
experience of millions of families around the world where multilingualism is the norm, not the
exception? Just look at Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, and Finland –– to mention a few.

Some kids can't even handle that in one language."
It's true that many children have difficulties reading and writing well. However, reading and writing
is a 'coding / decoding' process and is not linked to the number of languages a child speaks, as such
–– although it could involve multiple alphabets, and then be a bit more work. Interestingly enough,
access to multiple languages actually makes it easier for children to understand the nature of
language itself, which, in turn, improves overall literacy skills. Research supports what many
parents have long felt: that multilingual children have better–developed linguistic understanding.

Argumentative Essay On Raising Children
Do children raised by the same parents and by the same morals tend to have similar adult
personalities? Many individuals seem to think this is true based on the myth, "Raising Children
Similarly Leads to Similarities in Their Adult Personalities." There are many sources for and against
this myth, however using the ten sources for psychological myths, this is still thought to be true by
some. One of the ten sources for psychological myths is, "Word of Mouth." This idea states that

If they do their best in raising all of their children to the best of their ability, the only one to blame is
the child who got into trouble. They most likely got involved with the wrong people and starting
picking up bad habits. To educate people on the truth of this myth, those who have conducted
experiments could give speeches on their findings, or they could set up conventions where people
that are interested could go through the step–by–step process that the experimenter went through to
discover the truth. Prior to reading the text, I had no belief in this myth. I know that it could
influence your decision, but very rarely would it ever make your own decision. Peers have a lot of
influence on a person, or someone could be interested in something completely different than their
parents and make their decision based on their interests. After reading, I can tell how myths
originate and how they are believed true to this day. If an occurrence happens over and over again it
could be taken as a truth rather than a myth. Scientific reasoning is very important in psychology,
because it can prove things to be false. When studying the mind, science gives us a definite answer,
while myths let our minds linger one way or another believing in things we shouldn't or having no

The Four Methods Of Raising Children
It is common for the older generation to talk about having their children. These stories are usually
filled with happiness and sorrow as they recount the troubles and joys they had raising their kids.
Not every parent has the same method for teaching their children. There are four basic methods that
are used by most though and they are as follows:
· The Authority Method – This is the method where the main form of control over the children is
fear. This means that anything the parents tell their children must be obeyed without question. The
children listen because they know if they do not the punishments are severe and followed through
with. There is no conversation or compromise, it is what it is. Those children who do not comply or
who question their parents are punished. This method does not lead to a healthy and happy child.
Instead of loving their parents, they fear them instead. Many of the children produced from an
authority upbringing have hard times in adult life because they do not know how to interact with
others in a healthy manner. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They do not stop this type of bad behavior and ignore it instead. Instead of steering their children in
the right direction or setting boundaries, they feel that their children learn more by making their own
mistakes and learning from them. There is more openness in the parent child relationship and
compromise is the key for the parents who use this method of parenting. The one aspect that is good
about this parenting method is that the parents are much closer to their children that the authority
parents and they tend to be more open minded when their children are not cut exactly from the same
cloth as they are. The children are allowed to be their own people and this allows for more

had started to learn it earlier as a child. The younger a learner is when they begin to be taught a new
language, the easier it is for them to understand and remember. This is simply because the younger a
child is, the better they are at mimicking new sounds and pronunciation, making it easier to learn
new words. (Catherine Ford. 'Children should start learning languages at three,' The Telegraph. 10

Discuss The Role Of Cultural Factors In Raising Children
There are many cultural factors that come into play in the raising of children. One major factor is
the role of the mother and father in early childhood interactions. Kathleen Berger points to the
obvious differences between the way mothers and fathers interact with their young children. She
states that mothers tend to "caress, read, sing..." where as fathers tend to "swing the baby through
the air" (Berger 146). What is more, mothers tend to stay home from work to raise the children more
than fathers (Berger 154). Yet the best–case scenario in raising children is for a father and mother to
both be involved. One such evidence is sited by Berger when she states, "Close father–infant
relationships can teach infants (especially boys) appropriate

Parenting Tips and Advice for Raising Bilingual Children
By Rashel Dan
Apr 19, 2008
The world is becoming smaller and cultures are almost merging. Before, transport and
communication made it difficult for people to connect. Today, it is a common occurrence to come
across people of different races. Because of these cross cultural encounters, many individuals find
spouses of different racial heritages.
Some families are also relocating to other countries. In such cases, these parents are more than ever
in need of a good parenting tip. This is because these parents need to contemplate the need to raise
their children in a bilingual environment. Why is bilingualism necessary in some families and what
parenting tip do bilingual parents need?
Raising kids in bilingual environment has more advantages than disadvantages. This parenting tip is
highly recommended by some bilingual parents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a highly recommended parenting tip that both parents feel comfortable about the arrangement.
Otherwise one parent may not be supportive at all. Neglecting this parenting tip may make matters
unpleasant for one parent and for the children.
Start Early and Be Consistent
Begin early and start while your kid is still young. Some parents may recommend that bilingualism
should be introduced as early as infancy. They also offer the additional parenting tip of consistency.
Do not stray from your resolve and your methods for bilingual training. At the same time, avoid
fierce criticism. This may only push your children into dismissing the minor language.
Use Techniques
Used tried and tested techniques. Some parents both insist on speaking the minority language while
at home and allow their children to speak the majority language while outside. In some families, one
parent speaks the minority language while the other speaks the majority language when speaking to
their children.

Raising Children In A 'Participation Trophy' Society
Throughout history, competition has been displayed between people in many different ways. From
worldwide events such as the Olympics to smaller contests such as a class geography bee,
competition promotes people to give their peak performance, put in maximum effort, and better
themselves. As a result, the winners receive an award as a symbol of their hard work while the
losers go home empty–handed. Farmers nurture their livestock for years to enter for a blue ribbon,
athletes compete head–to–head to win a gold medal, and businesses advertise their companies to
steal customers and surpass their opponents. However, children today are being taught with a
different rulebook. Nowadays, children that take part in competitive teams are being given ... Show

As children who have received participation awards begin to grow older, they are introduced to
more and more situations in which not everyone is a winner. A person who has been a winner all
their life will eventually lose, and it will affect them more seriously because they have not had
experience dealing with failure at an early age. According to the article "Failure is an Option:
Raising Children in a 'Participation Trophy' Society" in Scouting Magazine, Dr. Tim Elmore
believes failure is like a coach, teaching kids to try their best. Elmore argues that participation
trophies take away the positive effects of losing, and children grow up lacking motivation and
become wary of testing their abilities due to fear of failure. This leads to children being more
emotionally fragile than they should be, which may eventually result in serious matters such as
depression and even suicide. Participation awards treat everyone like a winner, which means
children do not learn how to cope with loss. Kids that don't experience dealing with failure end up
being afraid of it, and this constant fear contributes to psychological problems such as stress,
anxiety, and depression. For example, if a child were to

The Secret To Raising Smart Children Summary
In the article "The Secret to Raising Smart Children", by Carol Dweck there are strong statements
about growth and fixed–mindsets. Growth mind–set is important for children with impressionable
minds, with the right amount of focus, effort, and praise they can shape their minds for success.
Without this they can become lazy and discouraged making them not want to try at all, a fixed–
mindset will not let them continue in a progressive manner. Dweck goes on to discuss that talent is
worshipped in our society so children often feel that if they do not do exceptionally well they are
unintelligent and should not try. Other times students do well in graded school where not much
work is required, so when middle school or high school hits they lack the motivation to try harder.
"Such children hold an implicit belief that intelligence is innate and fixed, making striving to learn
seem far less important than being (or looking) smart...the need to exert effort as threats to their ego
rather than as opportunities to improve," (Dweck, 81). This is a powerful quote that I will further
discuss. Growth mind–set is the idea that you can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Authoritative, Permissive, And Unforgiven By Raising Their...
When it comes to being a parent there are many ways a parent can raise their child or children, for
example there are four types of parenting styles which are authoritative, authoritarian, permissive,
and uninvolved. The authoritative parent are characterized by having reasonable demands and high
responsiveness. Authoritative parents are strict on their children, but they are very loving, warming,
and supportive towards their children by listening to their child opinions, encouraging
independence, expressing warmth and nurturance, and encouraging their child to discuss options.
(Reference: Rathus S.A. (2014).Psych.GengaqeLearning) Authoritarian parents are like authoritative

unforgiven by have strict guidelines towards their children without any tolerance for disobeying. ...

Research Paper On Raising The Children
Raising the Children Derrick Moore Azusa Pacific University Raising the Children Proverbs 22:6
says, "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn
from it." This Bible passage is basically stating that parents are to guide their child on a God
honoring path. That way they will stay on that path even when those parents are no longer around.
From a Christian viewpoint this proverb is simple, as God has called us to go make disciples out of
all the people of the Earth. It would only make sense that a parent try to make a disciple of their
children, or even start them on the right path. From a psychology standpoint, though, this proverb
covers many topics; nature vs. nurture, parenting styles, and child development just to name a few.
Ultimately, this proverb focuses on the upbringing of a child, and while environment has some
effect on adult characteristics, it is how the child is raised that will greatly affect the path in which
they walk. This can best be illustrated by the stages of child development, and different aspects of
life affected by upbringing. Psychology recognizes four major stages of childhood development.
The first is from ages zero to two, and is the infant/baby stage. This is a time for developing the
bonds that will last a lifetime; providing the child with the inner resources to develop self–esteem
and the ability to relate positively with others. A time where the parents and the child

On Raising Biracial Children Summary
After the ruling of Loving v. Virginia in 1967 the U.S Supreme Court deemed laws prohibiting
interracial relationships as illegal. Although this ruling was meant to change some of the social
inequalities associated with interracial relationships, there are still incidents of where belonging to a
multiracial family brings problems such as the way individuals identify their culture, and how others
view them. Since Eubanks grew up in a multiracial family, his decision to bear children with his
multiracial wife was a way for him to continue to challenge white supremacy. Cheryl Seelhoff,
author of On Raising Biracial Children illustrates how being a white woman and having a child by a
black man was a challenge towards white supremacy because it ... Show more content on

During this account, Eubanks finds that his son's approach to how he identifies himself and his
reaction to the DNA results illustrates a generational gap. Eubank's son, Patrick, describes that when
he is confronted with how he identifies, he solely bases it off the "assumptions" that someone makes
about him (Eubanks, 2013). Patrick's approach to how he deals with identifying himself speaks to
the prejudices that individuals or a group of people have about the way that people who they
presume to belong to a certain group should look and behave. This notion of thinking from Patrick
then creates the realization for Eubanks that "DNA results confirmed for me that identity cannot be
constructed based on a percentage of African ancestry, and that our society's generally accepted
racial categories cannot begin to address the complexity and nuance of our heritage." Eubanks
explains to his audience that due to the fact that almost every individual's DNA is a mutation no one
should feel inferior or superior to another group. He also expresses how one should also not make
basic assumptions based on an individual's appearance along with not feeling guilt or shame about
the basis of one's genetic

ways to raise children who are successful in many areas. For example, Carol Dweck, who is a

Raising A Healthier Generation Of Children
In 2010 the lives of students in over 100,000 schools in the United States changed quite
dramatically (What). The beloved junk food in the vending machines, high calorie lunches, and
sugary drinks sold at schools were forcibly removed. Through the Healthy, Hunger–Free Kids Act,
the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) made the first major changes in school meals
in 15 years (School). Although the initial reaction from students has been quite negative, this
program is beneficial to schools and will fulfill its goal in raising a healthier generation of children
(School). The National School Lunch Program was established under the National School Lunch
Act signed by President Truman in 1946 (National). Schools involved in the lunch program receive
cash subsidies and USDA foods from the USDA for each meal they serve. Only if their meals meet
the federal requirement, will the school receive the money. The lunches provided are nutritionally
balanced and low–cost or free. Today, over 31 million students receive meals through this lunch
program (What). The Healthy, Hunger–Free Kids Act was put in place to improve the already
existing school meal requirements and promote better nutrition. The opponents to the Healthy,
Hunger–Free Kids Act are usually students who are angry about the loss of their junk food. With
this being a large factor, students who pay for full price lunches declined by about 10% in 2013, the
lowest rate in over a decade (Harrington). The Government

The Effects Of Parenting And Raising Children
In the recent years, There has a significant work and studies in the field of parenting and raising
children. Many social workers and researchers had been putting a lot of efforts and conducting
plenty of studies to find the best methods for parents to raise happy successful kids. Today's fast
paced life and the long work hours had left parents with very little time for their children. However,
studies have shown the many negative effects on the kids' personality and how important it is for
caregivers to be with their kids and nurture them. Alice Sterling Honig in her article Raising Happy
Achieving Children in the New Millennium talked about how it is a crucial matter for parents to
spend enough time with their children, especially in their early years. Communication between
children and parents is also very important, although many parents don't understand that. For
instance, when a kid does something wrong parents should talk about why did he do it and why it is
wrong, not just send him to his room or spank him. Teaching toddlers and preschoolers that are still
discovering the world around them can very challenging, that's why parents need to have a lot of
patience while dealing with little kids, and help them learn right from wrong. Parenting is not about
how to be perfect, there is no such thing as a perfect parent or the perfect kid, there will be mistakes
from both sides. Therefore caregivers need to focus on how to teach morals and values to their kids,

The Effect of Raising Children in an Urban Environment versus Agrarian Environment Many
parents ask themselves a question whether there is a difference in raising their children in urban or
rural areas. And therefore, what are the advantages and disadvantages of rural and urban
environment. The life quality is one of the major factors to consider while comparing rural and
urban living. That is why the main task to be made when talking about advantages and
disadvantages of urban versus rural life is evaluating such important factors as health and
employment possibilities, presents and quality of educational institutions, coast of living, diversity,
choice issues, etc. Although, rural environment offer a wide range of benefits, the urban
environment has much more to offer children and their caregivers. Social problems, such as family
poverty, unemployment, crime, discrimination, drug abuse, and poor health care exist in every
setting, whether urban, suburban or rural. These problems affect children development and may
become a profound obstacle for their growth. That is why understanding all the negative factors of
the area of living is vital for parents who want successfully raise their children. Despite the negative
factors of living in urban environment, there are a great number of positive sides that affect the life

Raisin Raising Bilingual Children
Bilingualism is the ability to speak and understand two different languages. You don't have to speak
both languages fluently to be considered bilingual; most people will still have a dominant language.
People used to think that learning a second language is something you can do only when you get
older.
According to oncology nurse, Suzanne Robin in her article "Why Is It Easier for a Child to Learn a
New Language Than an Adult," "Young children are hard–wired to learn language in the first few
years of life. When frequently exposed to two languages, they unconsciously acquire the second
language naturally, applying the same skills they use to acquire their native language. Older children
and adults have to learn the language consciously by studying it." (2014, para. 2). ... Show more

The best time to teach your child a second language is the same time the child is learning the first
one. However, parents worry about exposing toddlers to more than one language because it may
cause delays in their speech or language development. It is hard to believe that an infant can listen
to a different language without getting confused; however, children are more versatile than parents
might think.
It is normal to worry about your child's development as soon as your start to expose a child to a
second language. Some bilingual children in fact may start speaking a bit later than other kids, but
then so do some monolingual children. Children will mix words up and sentences when learning a
second language, this is a normal part of becoming bilingual. Parents should not worry about these
myths. Gigi Luk, an associate professor at Harvard's Graduate School of Education has found that,
"bilingualism is an experience that shapes our brain for a lifetime." (20xx, para.

Analysis Of Raising Well-Educated Children
Raising Well–Educated Children What does it mean to be well educated? According to Alfie Kohn,
well–educated means to, ". . . have the desire as well as the means to make sure that learning never
ends" (Kohn). In Kohn's article, he questions the qualifications that the public school system uses to
determine what makes a well–educated student. Although he raises very important questions, Alfie
does not attempt to offer any solutions to these problems; however, I will explain what it means to
be well–educated and include some information on how to decide what environment will work best
for your child. Parents must evaluate the American public school's method of adequately preparing
students for college and future jobs, realizing there is an alternative option for educating children, so
they can truly become a well–educated individual. Although I am still a student, I have experienced
or reviewed almost every type of schooling, teaching method, testing method, and curriculum. Since
my brother and I are homeschooled, my mom and I pick which curriculums my brother and I do
each year, plan the year week by week, compare our curriculum with other types of schools, and
choose what is the best. Therefore, I want to share my knowledge with parents, who are having
trouble deciding how to make their child "well–educated", but what does this mean? Let's compare
me to my brother. I listen in class, take notes, highlight my book, make flashcards, study, and make

world and mistakes can damage them in the future. In the article "Are We Raising a Generation of

dependent on my mom, if anything I've distanced myself so that I can have more independence. My

never get hurt or fail? The effects of helicopter parenting, in my experience, is distancing so that we
can do what we want. Rebelling from parents is another effect, again because of the need for
independence. I do think that if parents are willing to do their child's homework and projects then
they might as well let them live at home for the rest of their lives because once someone experiences
that kind of "sheltering" they aren't going to want to do work for themselves if they know their
parents are willing to do everything for them. In some cases this type of parenting will not have bad
effects on the children. It's natural for parents to want to protect their children, but there comes a
point where parents have to let their children fail in order for them to learn what to do and what not

deviant behavior at times. While in the Indian culture the raising of children involves much bond
and discipline, in the American culture, bonding and discipline has little impact of the raising of

On the other hand, in American cultures family bonding as well as values are not strongly used to
assist in the raising of children. Extended families are not in close proximity to the children so a
child cannot build that family bond. This occurs because America is so big so a child seldom sees
extended family. American parents are not always intimately aware that they children are in
relationships. As a result, parents become unaware so children sometimes end up with unwanted
pregnancies or in a domestic relationship. American children have the advantage of having much
food and clothing and are unaware that the under privileged has so little. Being that clothing and
food is not as expensive as other parents of the world, American children would place their parents
under financial pressures in order to get what they want, for example, a pair of Nike Airmax shoes
to wear to the mall when they already have three other pairs that can be given to the less fortunate
but instead they through them away. In American cultures, parents use a form of permissive
disciplinary techniques which employ little or no discipline. American parents are more lenient in
providing rules and regulations. They often leave their children with chores to do and end up
coming back to do the same chores which they leaved for their children to do. Also, these American
children have the opportunity to make their own decisions. They

The Conventions Of Parents Face Raising Their Children Essay
Conventions of Parenting in Leave it to Beaver Most modern family films highlight the hardships
that parents face raising their children, which are often then followed by moments that make
parenting the most rewarding. Films often sugar coat events of how parents may react to certain
situation which is a misrepresentation of a family, but we must keep in mind that films are not real
life stories unless they are documentaries. In this Essay, I will be using Marianne Hirsch's work on
the 'familial gaze and Sharon Varallo's piece on 'family photographs' as tools in order to analyse the
film Leave it to Beaver. The film Leave it to Beaver released August 1997, is based on the
successful Tv series comedy that was released in 1957. I will be drawing on both Hirsch and
Varallo's work which explores the representation of western and non–western families by using
photographs, and using their incite to further strengthen my argument. Not all families are alike,
most certainly not in values, religion, culture, race, just to name a few, but all families have
hardships and it's how those hardships are handled that make a family stronger. A stronger family
often starts with the parents and how they treat one another. For example, parents are seen as role
models to their children and those kids pick up habits, from their parents, whether they be good or
bad. As I analyse the film Leave it to Beaver, I will be exploring the portrayal of parenting
conventions that accurately represent

Mr Rose said "Much of that [racism], we think, is to do with unwitting stereotyping of youngsters and the lack of expectation or lowered expectation of teachers as a result of that sometimes (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/294078.stm)". With the fact that their "ethnicity influences their class and their class influences their attitude", there is concern about the aspirations of underprivileged children "socio–economic barriers may hinder aspiration formation for these children because of lack of mentors, opportunities, and resources and also doubt their ability to attain in learning" (http://www.learningbenefits.net/Publications/ResReps/ResRep27.pdf pg3) The majority of schools are engaged in a wide variety of initiatives to improve provision and raise the attainment of all pupils. • 3. Raising Children Darrell L. Rogers August 31, 2011 UNV–303 University Success Professor Kristen Dicarlo Having children comes as natural as eating; being a good parent comes only with a little work and effort. So many times in our society we see examples of bad parenting. No child is born with a how to manual and this is why the whole family needs to be involved in the child's life. There use to be an old saying "It takes a community to raise a child", but to many times it is the community that has became the most dangerous to the child. Doing my research for this paper I have found numerous resources available to parents to help them along the way. This paper will look at good parenting techniques using "The Top Ten Parenting Tips" by DR ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children cannot develop a moral compass unless people around them use the clear, sharp language of right and wrong." I agree with this totally. Never should anyone have cause to curse at their children. I have always told my children cursing is a sign of poor communication skills. I have never spoken to my children like a baby. Speak to your children like people and they will develop a vocabulary like a person should, provide them with a dictionary so they can look up words they did not understand during the conversation or allow them to ask during the conversation. Following this as developed its own problems in life; all my children have had issues with talking with children of their own age due to the level of conversation. "Punish with a loving heart. Today, punishment has a bad reputation. The results are guilt–ridden parents and self–indulgent, out–of–control children. Children need limits. They will ignore these limits on occasion. Reasonable punishment is one of the ways human beings have always learned. Children must understand what punishment is for and know that its source is parental love." I agree with this statement in it's entirely. In today's society government has made it a bad thing for children to be punished. I think a tap on the bottom is fine when they are young to teach them right from wrong. I have never seen a reason to raise the voice. • 4. Thematic Essay On Raising Our Children Raising a child can be a very difficult thing, especially considering that now studies have shown that our parenting has a huge effect on who our children turn out to be. So what should our goal for our children be? Well, there are serval verses in the bible that talk about what goals we should have as a parent; for example, Rom. 8:28–29 talks about how we as a parent should aim to aid God in conforming our children to the image of God. Now what does this mean? It means we should train our children to be obedient, to love, to care, and to trust, we are to train them to be an advocate for God. Then comes the question how are we to do this? For the answer to this question we must turn to the bible, for the bible [being seen as the written word of God] is exactly the place to find out how God intends parents to raise their children. There are 4 common themes in the biblical scriptures about parenting and raising children in the bible, these common themes are; correction/discipline, teaching, loving and nurturing. These 4 themes all in some way go hand and hand, each one seemingly leading into another. First comes correction/discipline which are pretty much the same phase, first we see something we need to correct in our child, perhaps this is something like stealing money off the counter. Then once we identify the action we talk to them about it, we ask them why they did it and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, often this is under the misunderstanding that providing love simply means providing food, clothing and shelter and simply saying I love you every once in a while. But, what to provide love actually means to be there for your child, to love on them, to teach them, to care for them and to be present. Being present doesn't necessarily mean being physically with them all the time, but what it does mean is that when you are with them you need to actually be acknowledging ... • 7. Parenthood Can Bring Stress On The Job Of Raising Children Parenthood can bring stress to the job of raising children, but being a single mother is one of the most difficult things a woman can be. In today's society, being a single mother is getting to become more common in the United States. Most of the time it is due to teenagers having unprotected sex at a young age or if you are an older single mother, it could be because of death, divorce, etc. It can be challenging being a single mother because you're doing what was designed to be a two–person job. I know this from experience because my mom is a single mother who raised four children. Most likely single mothers have to get two jobs just to support herself and her children especially if they do not have a high school or college degree. In addition, single mothers have less alone time because they have to be with their children at all times. Also being a single mother leads to being overloaded with too many tasks which leads to feeling overwhelmed. I think single mothers are the most multi tasked people in the world. It is difficult for a single mother to have one minimum wage job and raise a kid because that one job will not be able to pay all the bills and put food on the table, so single mothers have to get two jobs just to make ends meet. I remember seeing my mom getting ready for her first job at four in the morning. I can tell that it took a toll on her body because she would have bags under her eyes from not getting a complete eight hours of sleep. Sometimes she would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Gender Roles Of Civic Duties And Raising Children Throughout Vibia Perpetua's life, Roman society expected her to follow structured gender roles of civic duties and raising children in her community because she was female. Perpetua defied the expectations placed upon her since birth by converting to Christianity and used the freedom of the Christian religion to show her independence and create her own role as a woman. This essay will analyze Perpetua 's defiance of the gender expectations of civic hood and motherhood of the Roman community, and how the Christian community allowed her to define her own identity as a woman on her own terms in conflicting societies. In Perpetua's time, the role of a woman within the Roman culture was determined narrowly against gendered expectations. Early Roman society families had a patriarchal structure meaning the father was the head of the family. The strongest tie within the family was that between a father and a daughter. Daughters were expected to "[forge] political and social ties" for fathers (Salisbury 6). A Roman daughter was favored the most; they received the best education overseen by their fathers. The purpose of a strong education was "to pass on to their sons the values of Rome" as well as help her to be a good mother in the future (Salisbury 7). One expectation of a woman in the Roman culture was reproduction in order to continue lineage. In addition to structured family and social rules, Roman women joined cults with specific rituals for females to perform. A woman's role ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Raising Children In The Twenty First Century Raising kids in the twenty first century challenges parents more than ever. Culture calls out to kids, wanting to form them, while many parents want their kids to grow up with a biblical background and faith–based set of values. The Secret To Raising Smart Children Analysis Rey Valerio Gholdoian Per.2 21 Sep. 2016 Illusions of Success For years now, many students have thought "How do I grow up too be successful?" but the truth here is that the people asking this, don't know what success really means to them. Accomplishment can be defined in a variety of ways, such as the amount of money a person makes, how happy an individual is by themselves, or even achieving in the simple things in life. You can, however, gain the characteristics needed to be successful in the future, for example, patience, determination, and a straight mindset. Accidental effects can also come into play, for instance dumb luck that can happen to anybody and the wealth gap between the person or the school they attend. These are just three of the most important traits a scholar must have in order to get somewhere in their future of education and in life down the path they may take. They imagine how amazing and fun a life filled with jokes and no rules would be. Not even having to go to school if you did not want to. Except this is not how life works. When a parent dies and the reality sets in, it quickly shows us that life is not all fun and games. The death of a parent is a devastating reality for any young child to bare. This abrupt reality may have long lasting effects as each child has their own unique way of perceiving life's events. In the blink of an eye ones world may be completely twisted around. Another type of death is one by tragedy that can be unexpected and can be more devastating than prolonged death in that it occurs suddenly and without notice. More often than not parents die unexpectedly and their children are left behind in a big scary world with no guidelines on how to survive. In part this is because parents do not expect to die while their child or children are still young. Planning ahead for the future can be difficult for parents emotionally as well as culturally and in some cases even financially. Initially when a parent dies it seems as if they have all the support in the world by people who love them. Most people seem to think that after a year or more children should be well adjusted, happy and have made it through their traumatic loss. A child's perspective may seem different in fact they may feel more alone. A child named Abby had this to say about that topic "The pain got worse! Because the initial shock wears off, people stop coming to your house, and you are left....with yourself" (Simon, Johnson 49). What most people do not realize is that they still are not okay. No one can completely prepare for the unknown when a child loses a parent no one can predict how each child will grieve. The caretaker of the child who is grieving has the responsibility of trying to understand the child's thoughts or questions. This belief is prevalent in monolingual countries and has far more politics than science to back it up. Rest assured that your child's little brain has more than enough neurons firing to cope with two languages (or even more) without frizzing out. On the contrary, decades of research in countless studies actually show significant cognitive advantages to being multilingual. She states that mothers tend to "caress, read, sing..." where as fathers tend to "swing the baby through the air" (Berger 146). What is more, mothers tend to stay home from work to raise the children more than fathers (Berger 154). Yet the best–case scenario in raising children is for a father and mother to both be involved. According to the article "Failure is an Option: Raising Children in a 'Participation Trophy' Society" in Scouting Magazine, Dr. Tim Elmore believes failure is like a coach, teaching kids to try their best. Elmore argues that participation trophies take away the positive effects of losing, and children grow up lacking motivation and become wary of testing their abilities due to fear of failure. This leads to children being more emotionally fragile than they should be, which may eventually result in serious matters such as depression and even suicide. Participation awards treat everyone like a winner, which means children do not learn how to cope with loss. Growth mind–set is important for children with impressionable minds, with the right amount of focus, effort, and praise they can shape their minds for success. Without this they can become lazy and discouraged making them not want to try at all, a fixed– mindset will not let them continue in a progressive manner. Dweck goes on to discuss that talent is worshipped in our society so children often feel that if they do not do exceptionally well they are unintelligent and should not try. Other times students do well in graded school where not much work is required, so when middle school or high school hits they lack the motivation to try harder. "Such children hold an implicit belief that intelligence is innate and fixed, making striving to learn seem far less important than being (or looking) smart...the need to exert effort as threats to their ego rather than as opportunities to improve," (Dweck, 81). • 28. Research Paper On Raising The Children Raising the Children Derrick Moore Azusa Pacific University Raising the Children Proverbs 22:6 says, "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." This Bible passage is basically stating that parents are to guide their child on a God honoring path. That way they will stay on that path even when those parents are no longer around. From a Christian viewpoint this proverb is simple, as God has called us to go make disciples out of all the people of the Earth. It would only make sense that a parent try to make a disciple of their children, or even start them on the right path. From a psychology standpoint, though, this proverb covers many topics; nature vs. nurture, parenting styles, and child development just to name a few. Ultimately, this proverb focuses on the upbringing of a child, and while environment has some effect on adult characteristics, it is how the child is raised that will greatly affect the path in which they walk. This can best be illustrated by the stages of child development, and different aspects of life affected by upbringing. Psychology recognizes four major stages of childhood development. The first is from ages zero to two, and is the infant/baby stage. This is a time for developing the bonds that will last a lifetime; providing the child with the inner resources to develop self–esteem and the ability to relate positively with others. Patrick's approach to how he deals with identifying himself speaks to the prejudices that individuals or a group of people have about the way that people who they presume to belong to a certain group should look and behave. This notion of thinking from Patrick then creates the realization for Eubanks that "DNA results confirmed for me that identity cannot be constructed based on a percentage of African ancestry, and that our society's generally accepted racial categories cannot begin to address the complexity and nuance of our heritage." Eubanks explains to his audience that due to the fact that almost every individual's DNA is a mutation no one should feel inferior or superior to another group. Therefore, I want to share my knowledge with parents, who are having trouble deciding how to make their child "well–educated", but what does this mean? Let's compare me to my brother. I listen in class, take notes, highlight my book, make flashcards, study, and make all high A's, but when it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Are We Raising A Generation Of Helpless Children Summary Is there such thing as being too protective of your child? There comes a point where parents have to let their children grow up on their own and make mistakes, but it seems parents now are raising a generation full of helpless children. Helicopter parenting is being a way of parenting that everyone seems in on, but what the parents are understanding is that keeping children sheltered from the real world and mistakes can damage them in the future. In the article "Are We Raising a Generation of Helpless Kids?" by Mickey Goodman discusses how helicopter parenting is holding children back from their full potential. In another article "No, Helicopter parents aren't ruining kids after all" by Valerie Strauss, goes on the other side of helicopter parenting by discussing how this form of parenting is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being a child of a helicopter parent, I don't believe that having a helicopter parent made me dependent on my mom, if anything I've distanced myself so that I can have more independence. My mom means well she just wants to protect my sisters and I, but how does she expect us to learn if we never get hurt or fail? The effects of helicopter parenting, in my experience, is distancing so that we can do what we want. Rebelling from parents is another effect, again because of the need for independence. I do think that if parents are willing to do their child's homework and projects then they might as well let them live at home for the rest of their lives because once someone experiences that kind of "sheltering" they aren't going to want to do work for themselves if they know their parents are willing to do everything for them. In some cases this type of parenting will not have bad effects on the children. It's natural for parents to want to protect their children, but there comes a point where parents have to let their children fail in order for them to learn what to do and what not to ... • 39. Raising Children in Two Different Cultures Within Indian cultures, parents take the time they have to raise their children and this tend to have greater impact on their children's lives in today's world. American parents are more lenient when it comes to raising their children and result of this leads to the children becoming involve in some deviant behavior at times. While in the Indian culture the raising of children involves much bond and discipline, in the American culture, bonding and discipline has little impact of the raising of children. In Indian cultures, the importance of family bonding, as well as values, help the child to grow up in a way that they can respect what they have. Indian families live in close villages or in extended families so there is the ability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, in American cultures family bonding as well as values are not strongly used to assist in the raising of children. Extended families are not in close proximity to the children so a child cannot build that family bond. This occurs because America is so big so a child seldom sees extended family. American parents are not always intimately aware that they children are in relationships. As a result, parents become unaware so children sometimes end up with unwanted pregnancies or in a domestic relationship. American children have the advantage of having much food and clothing and are unaware that the under privileged has so little. Being that clothing and food is not as expensive as other parents of the world, American children would place their parents under financial pressures in order to get what they want, for example, a pair of Nike Airmax shoes to wear to the mall when they already have three other pairs that can be given to the less fortunate but instead they through them away. In American cultures, parents use a form of permissive disciplinary techniques which employ little or no discipline. American parents are more lenient in providing rules and regulations. They often leave their children with chores to do and end up coming back to do the same chores which they leaved for their children to do. Also, these American children have the opportunity to make their own decisions. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Raising Children In Youth Sports Every parent should always like to see their child be successful. Whether or not being successful in sports or being successful in music or art. Lisa Mooney a publisher for livestrong.com says, "Many parents wonder whether they should encourage their children to play sports. It is known that athletic participation aids in fighting childhood obesity, encourages social interaction and promotes self– confidence and independence in many children. Pushing reticent children into sports, however, can have adverse consequences, because competition can place too much pressure to succeed on even recreational athletes. Parents must weigh the pros and cons of involving their children in youth sports" (Mooney, 2014). Raising a child is a big responsibility, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, placing your child in a sport and allowing them to thrive to be the best that they can be will teach your child a tremendous amount of responsibilities. Whether or not your child wants to play sports or not, you as a parent should be able to stand by your child in whatever decision they may make in life. But having your child play sports will allow them to be more active in playing and also allow them to live a more healthy life instead of your child sitting on the couch and watching TV. Placing children in sports can teach them many goals in life, they will be able to use them when they grow older, especially when they reach middle or high school level ... • 41. The Conventions Of Parents Face Raising Their Children Essay Conventions of Parenting in Leave it to Beaver Most modern family films highlight the hardships that parents face raising their children, which are often then followed by moments that make parenting the most rewarding. Films often sugar coat events of how parents may react to certain situation which is a misrepresentation of a family, but we must keep in mind that films are not real life stories unless they are documentaries. In this Essay, I will be using Marianne Hirsch's work on the 'familial gaze and Sharon Varallo's piece on 'family photographs' as tools in order to analyse the film Leave it to Beaver. The film Leave it to Beaver released August 1997, is based on the successful Tv series comedy that was released in 1957. I will be drawing on both Hirsch and Varallo's work which explores the representation of western and non–western families by using photographs, and using their incite to further strengthen my argument. Not all families are alike, most certainly not in values, religion, culture, race, just to name a few, but all families have hardships and it's how those hardships are handled that make a family stronger. A stronger family often starts with the parents and how they treat one another. For example, parents are seen as role models to their children and those kids pick up habits, from their parents, whether they be good or bad. As I analyse the film Leave it to Beaver, I will be exploring the portrayal of parenting conventions that accurately represent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
