Character Analysis Of The Lottery By Mrs. Hutchinson
In the story, "The Lottery", the characters are introduced in a carefree way. One character, Tessie
Hutchinson, was introduced as a woman who had forgotten an important day in her community and
was late to the event. Throughout "The Lottery", Mrs. Hutchinson displays two main traits. First,
Mrs. Hutchinson displays being carefree. Mrs. Hutchinson was very calm when she walked up to
the crowd as she said, "'Clean forgot what day it was'" (Jackson). This shows how common an
ordeal the lottery was in their way of life. The lottery did not seem to make anyone super nervous.
This shows how Mrs. Hutchinson developed as a character throughout the story. Mrs. Hutchinson
was also frightened. When Mr. Hutchinson unfolded his slip of paper Tessie began to scream of
unfairness (Jackson). Mrs. Hutchinson shows how frightened she is for her life because she knows
that she has a higher chance of dying once her husband is shown with the only special slip of paper.
Another character in "The Lottery" is Mr. Summers.Mr. Summers shows two main traits while in
the story as well. Mr. Summers is a married man, without children, that "...[has the] time and energy
to devote to civic activities", which makes him responsible in his town(Jackson). This is important
to the story because he is the proctor of an age–old tradition that kills people. Mr. Summers almost
acts as if "The Lottery" is just like any other community event like a county fair. He acts with no
remorse because it is traditional to have the lottery. Mr. Summers also is traditional. As he is setting
up for the lottery to begin, he remembers and performs a lot of rituals that occur during this event
like using the same black drawing box or calling up each male head of household or making up the
family lists after everyone was gathered (Jackson). Mr. Summers is knit picky about what happens
as the day moves along because if anything goes wrong, he is responsible and could possibly be
disciplined for the mistake. If there was a mistake the result could quite possibly be death because
that is the whole purpose of the lottery, to rid the community of a person, by stoning. Therefore, Mr.
Summers would not stray from the traditional ways of performing the lottery at all. The

What Is Frightful Fields Essay
A gloomy, dark, broken, isolated, boring place was known as Frightful Fields. There stood a land of
no happiness where crickets chirp, owls hoot, cries, and screams were heard. This place was a run
down, rough, and dry city which no one ever strolled on the grounds of. Rats ran on the streets and
trash was thrown all over the roads. The night glared at whoever was outside at anytime. The air
always had a smell of blood in it. Never was there any sun or color. In fact, the city was more like a
slaughterhouse. There were dead bodies in every alley. Scared people all over the city prayed they
would not get killed. People disappearing was quite common in Frightful Fields. Most of the food
here tasted tremendously like a sock. Even in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In no more than 3 days, over half the town was colored. The man who bathed all day but never felt
clean, the artist who was never inspired, and the woman who never got any customers were all
starting to live their life to the fullest. The bathtub man, whose name was James, got out of his tub
and froliked in the daylight. The artist's name was Blake, he painted the most beautiful master piece
and won a trip to go to Italy! The hair stylist, her name was Jade, had a line up of customers outside
her salon! The nighttime came around and I had to quickly dash out of the town. If I stay in a town
for more than one week, my magic can go away. So I had to quickly go to my house in Mango
Municipality. It is called "mango" because everything there is made out of mangos. That night was
the happiest night the town had ever had. People were standing on their roofs throwing flowers onto
the population of Frightening Fields. Before I left, I signed a contract with the government to
change the name of Frightening Fields to Terrific Town. Also, I told them to keep this a surprise to
the town until the next

The Cecelia-Personal Narrative
The building was like a maze. It took me at least thirty minutes to find the cafeteria. I got two
sandwiches and waters, but then I saw Jesse she was sitting with Kai twisting her bracelet around
her fingers. I had given it to her when we were ten. The first I realized I had a crush on her. I walked
out of the room every other second looking back at her; Every Time being disappointed she wasn't
looking too. I opened the heavy door to find Cecilia sitting down freshly showered with new clothes

out similar clothes for me. ¨Here, the showers are down the hall.¨ She did a slow closed mouth smile

Creative Writing: The Haunted House
As he finished the soup, Mr. Jones dumped out the food that he didn't eat and took the can, placed it
into his bag and walked out the door. The yard was a few miles walk, but he and everyone else
needed the money so no one minded. The soup cans, bottles, papers and boxes were all recyclable.
But what did that matter when the scrapyard would take them off your hands for 20 cents a can? Mr.
Jones always had the mindset of money being a priority and besides, one cared about the
environment anyway right? This was about today. Mr. Jones wouldn't live long enough to see nature
burn, so why would it matter to him anyways? Men with a mindset like his were successful. Maybe

Fear and Tension in The Whole Towns Sleeping and A Terribly Strange Bed
The essay i have written is a comparison of two short stories. One written by Ray Bradbury in
1950's and titled "The Whole Towns Sleeping". The other was written by Wilkie Collins in 1856 and
entitled "A Terribly Strange Bed".
"The Whole Towns Sleeping" is about a middle–aged spinster called "Lavinia" 37, who goes to the
cinema with her friends while a mysterious killer, is at large. She is fully convinced that the killer
would not strike again for another four weeks because a murder has just occurred, and they seem to
happen at intervals when 'the moon is full', and superstitiously then 'men do strange things' because

"The Whole Towns Sleeping" is set in a small town in Illinois, U.S.A. A ravine runs straight through
the middle "The ravine cut the town in two". The ravine is the mysterious area of the town like a
'black dynamo', surrounded by 'secret mists' and 'odours' of a "rank greenhouse". The description of
the ravine creates tension and shows it to be a constant threat with its dark and gloomy images.
In "A Terribly Strange Bed" the main part of the story is set in the back street of a seedy gambling
house in Paris. The atmosphere is described, "Here, there was nothing but tragedy – mute weird
tragedy. The quiet in the room was horrible". This builds up tension effectively, and creates an
effective image of the gamblers as they watch in silence, and their desperate need to win to survive.
Lavinia Nebbs the protagonist in "The Whole Towns Sleeping" is described as "very straight and
slim", a typical spinster who has lots of confidence in herself, and quite sensible, but occasionally
craves excitement, which inevitably will lead her to make errors in judgment.
She insists that she stays at her own home and declines several offers of a bed for the night, even
though 'The Lonely One' is still on the loose, and despite warnings she insists she will still walk
home alone. These

Life In A City Is Better Than Living In The City
Kimi 胡劼 No. 0210650 12/30/10 Persuasive Essay (Revised) Life in Cities is of More Quality in
China In recent years, people have paid close attention to the quality of daily life a lot, and one of
the most heated debating topics is whether people should choose to live in the city or in the
countryside in China. There are millions of peasants living in rural areas, but a large number of them
are rushing into urban areas to get a job every year. People living in the countryside are anxious to
begin their urban life, meanwhile people in cities prefer to live a peaceful life far away from town.
As for me, in China, living in the city is much better than living in the countryside in that citizens
would surely live a more convenient life, have more choices in every aspect of life and would also
achieve a sense of accomplishment in their enriching life. Since some areas of countryside in China
are still in poor situation, cities offer people a more comfortable and convenient life. In some
suburban regions, it is troublesome to go out, but the transportation system in almost every city in
China is quite developed now. Citizens could choose different vehicles as they wish in cities, such
as car, bus, metro and even high speed railway. People living in Wuhan in central region of China
could reach Guangzhou in South China by high speed rail within several hours, in which period
people living in rural areas may just get to town from home. In cities, people could enjoy the door–
to–door transport service easily meanwhile going out is quite an inconvenient action for many
people living in suburban in China. This sort of obvious contrast can be seen by everybody. Besides
the aspect of transportation, there are more plentiful living facilities in cities than in the countryside.
As a whole, the infrastructure in most cities in China is of high quality. The systems of medical
treatment, health care, physical training, etc are available for citizens to make use of to keep their
life quality in a high level. Once citizens have a problem in daily life, there are often corresponding
ways for them to solve it. While in the most areas of countryside in China, there is still even a lack
of medical security now. Living in the city

Renewing Husbandry Analysis
Production–based farming has provided small communities a new effective way of farming;
however, this type of farming has created more issues than solutions. In "Renewing Husbandry,"
Wendell Berry discusses the way communities have lost the practice of husbandry in farming to
production–based farming. Also, he depicts the side effects production–based farming has on the
small communities by demonstrating the loss of connection the farmers now have with the land and
community they provide for. Production–based farming destroys the unity of small communities.
Production–based farming drives people out of the smaller communities because the production
damages the economy of the town. Berry reflects, "The little towns that once had been social ...

In the passage Berry discusses, "He is no longer working as an independent and loyal agent of his
place, his family, and his community, but instead as the agent of an economy that is fundamentally
adverse to him and to all that he ought to stand for" (2005, para. 11). When companies own
farmland for production, the farmers who grow the goods do not have a voice in the company's
decisions and the way the goods produced are treated. Farmers who own their land have the voice to
demand the way their goods sell and the choice to provide for the family. The farmers who grow the
goods for the companies no longer have the relationship with the land and the produce, because the
company who owns the farm has total control over the production process. The community no
longer receives the profits from the goods because the companies take the money from the owners
leaving them with a small income for the mass amount of goods produced. In addition to farmers
working for companies, the companies more employees in the farm than owners. Berry states in the
passage: "It has transformed the United States from a country of many owners to a country of many
employees" (2005, para. 19). In the country, farmers work for profit instead of working for their
communities or family. The unity of the community decreases when fewer owners own the farms
because the farmers no longer provide the goods only for the community the goods ship to many
other places in the country. The companies take the goods away from the family and the community
in order to make a

A few minutes passed by until Alice was able to speak and let me lead he back to the bedroom. We
sat on the end of the bed until 6:30 am while Alice explained to me that it was Mrs. Gilbert on the
phone, a co–worker at the Elementary School, and the wife of Mr. Gilbert the town's Sherriff. She
told Alice that her student Janie Augustine went missing on her way home from school that day. And
that a few hours before a camper found her dead in the Red furrow woods, 17 miles away from the
Elementary School. And when Alice asked Mrs. Gilbert how Janie died. Mrs. Gilbert choked on her
words as she said Janie was murder. She bled out after being hit with an ax in the stomach.
"I asked more questions I swear, but she said she couldn't say anymore, that she shouldn't have told
me anything" Alice cried. I tried my best to come up with something to say to her. I've never been in
a situation like this. I just let her cry into her knees again. I walked over to the kitchen and brewed
her some tea to help her get back to sleep, but by the time I got back into the room she was already
fast asleep, tears still on her cheek. The dog was curled up in the bend of her knees. I set the tea on

How Does One Religion Affect a Whole Town? Bergen County is a very densely populated county,
but I want to look closer, I want to look as a specific town within Bergen County; I want to take a
look at the Borough of Fair Lawn. The Borough of Fair Lawn in 2011 estimated to have a
population of 32,669 people. According to New York Times, municipal officials estimate that they
make up 33 to 40 percent of the population, and of the 21 houses of worship 8 of them are
synagogues. But this is not why I am writing this paper, I wanted to look deeper into the community
due to the fact that the borough of Fair Lawn has made it a point to accommodate the Jewish
community but with the growth of the town has not changed its ways to accommodate all of the

Because of this, unlike most of the surrounding towns, the Fair Lawn school system has a number of
Jewish holidays off. On many occasions due to weather, those who celebrate other holidays, such as
Good Friday, needed permission from all teachers to have the day off from school. This permission
was only granted when the students grades where above specific letter grade, if they had less then 7
absent days, and if all teachers agreed to sign the permission sheet; therefore your ability to
celebrate the holiday would be in your teachers hands. The town has created such a large bond with
its Jewish community, that some other religions needs have the ability to be easily be forgotten. The

Tension in Witch's Money Essay
Tension in Witch's Money
In John Collier's "Witch's Money," the stranger who suddenly appears in a remote mountain village
in Spain is initially seen by Foiral as an unwelcome madman. Certainly his surrealist description of
the landscape must seem a symptom of insanity to one unfamiliar with the trends of modern art.
Once he offers a nice sum of money to buy Foiral's house, however, the stranger is treated with a
new attitude. He is still not completely accepted by the community that he has moved into, but he
does wield a new type of power simply because only he can produce cash from paper billets. With
his magic cheques, though, the stranger creates a tension that grows into an economic struggle
between himself and his community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This knowledge of cheques that the stranger has over Foiral and the community increases the
tension between them. When Foiral finally receives his money from the cheque, he is under the
impression that all cheques give thirty thousand francs. Knowing that the stranger has a whole book
of cheques, Foiral and his friends immediately feel jealous of the outsider: he has something that
they want. A stranger –– a madman –– who has more than any member of the community, has
invaded their town. Because he has so much and they so little, the villagers feel that it is their right
to take the stranger's magic cheques . . . even if, in the process, they must take his life as well.
Ironically, tragically, their righteous ambition leads to their own destruction.
With the stranger dead, the people of the community help themselves to his cheques. Money begins
to exchange hands as goods are bought and deals are made. The progress of economic development
comes to the village. No one is afraid to dig up the money that they have saved because as soon as
the cheques are cashed there will be no worries, and the town can continue to "prosper." But as
every man meditates on their "two of these excellent billets," they begin to feel that "they were too
rich to speak to each other" (71, 72). Conflict grows between one–time friends as they argue over
what is to be bought and sold. Greed has come to town with the artist and his witch's money.

British Towns And Cities Overcrowded
British towns and cities were overcrowded. Population began increasing due to more people moving
in. As businesses began to boom and the national markets grew, more people from the countryside
flocked to the towns and the new factories because they wanted jobs. Small towns became large
cities and the city of London grew from a population of 2 million in 1840 to 5 million forty years
later. This resulted in more people in a country (Great Britain) living in cities than in rural areas like
never before. Houses were tiny and densely packed because as new towns and cities began to
rapidly develop, the need for housing escalated. In a rush to build the houses, many were
constructed too quickly in rows and often back to back "every scrap of space left by the old way of
building has been filled up and patched over until not a foot of land is left to be further occupied".
And if houses being really close together externally wasn't enough, they were also very crowded
internally as a result of the fast increase in population. Five to Nine people lived in a "small one–
storied, one–roomed hut" which was as big as an apartment and families had to share the tight space
with other families or even complete strangers.
British towns and cities were poor. Workers were not paid much at all for almost a whole day of
work. As factories were being built, businesses were in need of workers and with a long line of
people willing to work, employers could set wages as low as they wanted because

The, Native American, And Whatever White My Dad
When I think of the word "Ethnicity" of course I immediately think, "Oh I'm Mexican, Native
American, and whatever white my dad is." While I do have a darker brown skin I was not raised in
the traditional way it's assumed I was. I am only a quarter Mexican, so I was not raised in a Mexican
household. The reality of it is that I was raised in a small rural town, this particular tiny town goes
by the name of Hotchkiss, CO. I suppose I would say my real ethnicity is Rural–Conservative
American.
Out of the 900 people that live there the two main career choices are ranching and coal mining. The
town of Hotchkiss is a predominately white town and it is full of conservatives. I was raised by my
Democratic mother (who really is a Republican) and my Republican father, and when I was four my
next door neighbors began taking me to their Baptist church every Sunday.
While I hated living in a small town and I will never live in one again, small town thinking and
values have become a part of who I am. The sense of community in a small town has caused me to
genuinely care about everyone around me. While I do not consider myself to be conservative, many
of my political beliefs do tend to lean toward the conservative side of seeing things. I believe
Americans are ignorant, and I am not ignorant enough to believe that I am just as ignorant as
everyone else; but, I think that being American means standing up for what's right, and not backing

Summary: The Legendary Timbercreek Residents
"The Legendary Timbercreek Residents"
Many people tell tales of a town, a small town, nearly minute and nearly nonexistent in nature.
Timbercreek Canyon, south of the Clifton Gorge in Ohio. The tales told of this tiny, miniscule town
stay pretty consistent. Most people, even if they don't know anything else about Timbercreek
Canyon, know that the people who live there are absolute, raving, fools. The children of

looking to a better education, they move to a country that can give them the possibility of be a good

The second effect of moving to a new town or city can be found in psychologist state of a person.
For example, when I arrived here I had some mental problems because always I was thinking about
my family that I left in Angola. A person who is homesick suffers the consequences alone and thinks
a lot about the family that is away from her. In my opinion, think about the family who people left
causes serious problem and the person cannot concentrate on her real objective there. In addition,
people have to be strong and control all their feelings when they are in another town.
The third effect of moving to a new town is that

My Life
Most of my life i've spent constantly packing and unpacking because my family never came to
terms where we'd like to live in. We've lived from the smallest of towns to big city places and all
around Texas but I've never complained because i love to move around and meet new souls as my
dad said. Originally living in Houston, i got used to the city never sleeping but once the moving
began i changed my mind quickly. From all the places i've had the pleasure of living in, there is one
thing i have learned from my travels as we've finally stopped in a city like town, nothing beats
living in the country. It was my 7th grade year in middle school we had decided we could move

The sights were beautiful and it's something a city will almost never experience. See, when you get
to be a part of a bonfire which took 3 full trees to start, in the middle of nowhere, with giants
mudding trucks and people singing George Strait as they play guitar, you can't deny the happiness
that brings you and how much you still remember never wanting nights like those to end. Some
other Pros the country can offer you are the sense of community it has, if there was ever a tragedy
the entire town would come together as a family almost and mourn with you, and it was something I
thought was quite beautiful. Not to mention everyone knows you, which isn't as bad as someone
would think. If you ever needed anyone, you'd have a helping hand and a shoulder to lean on
without hesitation and you best believe half of the school already knew by then you were upset. One
of the best benefits i had when living in a small town was the movie prices being less than 3 dollars
and the small distances i had from everything. In 5 minutes i was already from my house to
walmart, another 5 minutes and i was at school, another 5 minutes and i'd already be at the movies
and mall so all i needed was 10 dollars and my skateboard and i knew my day would be a fun one.
Despite the lack of big stores, and the mall being an hour away, there was never much i could
complain about and it's still one of the reasons i've fallen

Neil Simon Reflection
Intelligence and emotion sure do have their boundaries, but when they lie in the palm of your hands,
being able to grasp them comes at an obstacle, especially when you're saving a town from a curse or
writing an essay to the teacher who just directed the play you're writing about. At Bartlett High
School on November 3, 2017, I watched a play called Fools by Neil Simon. Fools is about a
determined, young schoolteacher named Leon Tolchinsky who travels to the village of
Kulyenchikov and teaches Sophia Zubritsky, the daughter of the only doctor within the village. As
he arrives, he meets a handful of people, including a something, something shepherd, postman,
butcher, and vendor, and discovers that the town's lack of intelligence was due to a two–hundred–
year old spell that has the ability to be broken by the intelligence or marriage of Sophia. With
Kulyenchikov's fate in Leon's hand, he and his growing love for her attempts to teach Sophia in
order to avoid letting her go to be married by Count Gregor and saving the village from lost
knowledge forever. While going in to watch this play, I had very low expectations because I've
always been the person who believed any theatrical performances in schools where you don't know
anything about the story beforehand is not going to be as great. Once those two hours passed by, I
was enthralled with this play. From the loveable characters, the terrific acting, the simple set design,
and the never–ending humor, it was a play I certainly

To What Extent Is It Better To Grow Up In A Small Town
Some people believe it is better to grow up in a small town, and other people think it's better to grow
in a big city. I consider it better to grow in a big city, not only because there are more people, but
because you experience more people and different things that a small town probably doesn't have. In
a small town, everyone knows everyone else, and a neighborhood in a big city is bigger than that
whole small town. There are more eating options in a big city.
Growing up in a big city is better because you aren't sharing the road with farm vehicles, which
could be a hazard. For someone to grow up in a big city, there aren't as many chemicals being
sprayed, because farms. It also would be boring. A small town has a lot of fields, and sometimes

When it comes to small towns people who haven't lived in one tend to think that they are boring or
bland. However a chat with some of the people who have always lived in a town of less than four–
hundred people for their entire lives really paints a new picture. Donnie Moyer has lived outside of
Terril, Iowa his entire life on a farm working for his father until his passing in which he took control
of the property. When we discussed "How has the town change since you've lived here?" he
responded with "It hasn't change at all it's still the same place I grew up in." Some see this as being

this point in after her response it was clear that the sense of security was a large part that contributed
to her decision to remain in this town after marrying Donnie but it begged the next question. "Why
did you choose to raise your family in a small town?" to which she replied immediately to with "We

an easy answer to give but the sincerity in her voice spoke more than words ever could. We went on
to discuss why she herself believed that most outsiders believe small towns are bland and boring to

I was leaving behind the town where I was born and all my friends. This was one of the biggest

Movie, Blade Runner, The City And People Are Very Similar...
In the movie, Blade Runner, the city and people are very similar. They are both very different and
mysterious. The characters are not very well explained at first so give that mystery feel to them. The
city is very dark and different that other normal cities which make the city also look mysterious. The
director did this to add depth to the film and have the unknown so you can interpret your own ideas
into the movie. The city and the people are all characters in a film. They are the parts of the film that
tell the story. The characters all play important roles. Without all of them the movie would not be
the same. It could have the same storyline but with different people and a different city it becomes a
new film. The city helps show the hidden meanings in movies that the characters don 't say. If they
did say these things the city showed it would be a long boring movie. In books these meanings are
normally written but because there are no words in movies normally, the director must show these
thoughts. He will normally show this through the weather of the city or just they way the city is
acting. The city may be a busy city with cars running around everywhere or really quiet with no one
on the streets. The movie's characters and cities are both needed to create a scene that has depth and
is interesting. If neither of these are visible then the film could not have been written very well. Both
the city and people should be similar to have the film make sense.

Similarities Between Omelas And The Lottery
In the fictional short stories "The lottery" and "The ones who walk away from Omelas" the authors
convey that sacrifice is the true key to happiness, prosperity, and livelihood, but both authors hold
different views on how these goals are achieved. In both stories the authors show different types of
sacrifice and how it helps hold together a Utopian society. In "Omelas" it describes a beautiful town
and how everything is perfect, it talks about how there is a festival and lights with bells and singing,
decorated with silver and gold streamers. From that description it makes this town sound like a year
round party that never ends, but this whole "party" is depending on the suffering of a small child. "It
could be a boy or a girl. It looks about six, but actually is nearly 10. It is feeble–minded. Perhaps it
was born defective, or perhaps it has become imbecile through fear, malnutrition, and neglect. It
picks its nose and occasionally fumbles vaguely with its toes or genitals..."(3). In "The Lottery" the
society seems kind of gloomy, but all the people seem to be in a good mood at the time. The whole

Essay on Comparison of Jackson's Short Story The Lottery...
Almost every person in the world holds a set of traditions which have been established and practiced
for a long period of time. However, some traditions often cause us to not see the rationality despite
of the destructive nature it may have. In Shirley Jackson's short story, "The Lottery", a sacrifice of
one's life becomes the "jackpot" of an annual event held in a small town. This society's traditions
have caused the people to do away with their rational thoughts and the values of their lives as they
have become so stuck in their own cultural beliefs.
In the short story, "The Lottery", Jackson's use of symbols reveals a twisting plot that isn't
recognizable until nearly at the end of the story. Her use of third person point of view is ... Show

Here in this village, the lottery only takes about two hours with the 300 residents that currently live
there. In some towns, the lottery takes nearly two days and must be started on the 26th. Jackson
writes "it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers
to get home for noon dinner" (156). This states that they want to get this completed so they can
return home with their families and have a family lunch. Relaying no emotion to the fact that death
is the outcome of this whole ordeal.
In the film "The Lottery" the setting is more modern and appears to be in the 1960's even. You are
able to identify this due to the articles of clothing they possess, the way the towns' people do their
hair and make–up in some sort. Another clue is the shops out front of the town square, compared to
the short story; it was led to believe as if none of that had come into place at the time. Also the area
seems to be more industrialized than a rural town would be i.e. automobiles. It is never clear as to
what day it may be until the characters give dialogue of the other towns having to start the lottery a
day ahead June 27th. The town's people seem to have much more concern and empathy in the film
rather than the short story because of the emphasis they put on the characters faces and their
dialogue. Mrs. Hutchinson when called out as the "winner" of

The Lottery Short Story Analysis
Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" is about an unusual traditionalistic small town that
ironically gives the lottery a bad meaning. In the beginning of the story Jackson makes sure to
describe the setting of the story. Jackson starts the story off by saying "The morning of June 27th
was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day"(1). This quote is very misleading
because Jackson gives her audience a false sense of a welcoming environment. The town seems to
be stuck in this traditionalistic way of doing things. When you think of the lottery one automatically
thinks of money, but this story focuses more on the tragedy of the town. The story sets place in the
town square with the towns people all gathered to carry out the lottery. The year is not stated but
based on the description of the town's people one can assume that it is post–war time. We learn that
the lottery is not a one town event, but it is conducted across several towns. We expect it to be
familiar to everyone since it seems to be a "fun" time for all the town members. The story talks
about how children in the town are collecting stones before the lottery begins. Mr. Summers the
conductor of the lottery is responsible for getting everything ready for the lottery. The lottery takes
about 2 hours but some towns take sometimes even days. Once all the slips of paper are mixed in
the box all the people from the list come up and draw a slip. During the lottery everyone

Hemingway's Use of Economy In The End of Something Essay
Hemingway's Use of Economy In The End of Something
Hemingway is renowned for his brief, simple and economical writing style. This is present in the
story "The end of something", but how does he achieve this and what effect does it have on the
story.
Hemingway has an economical writing style, which is achieved through the repetition of words. An
example of this is the use of the word "said" after any dialogue between Marjorie and Nick. This can
seem quite juvenile in style, many authors would be more descriptive, but by repeating this simple
and plain word Hemingway is commenting on the tediousness of their relationship. This is
reinforced later when Nick remarks "it isn't fun anymore". When ... Show more content on

There are several lines and words in the story that have double meanings and it is for us the reader
to interpret them. An example of this is the word "Lying" in the following sentence "'Yes' Nick said
lying, his face on the blanket". Lying could mean one of two things, lying face down or not telling
the truth. If we take the former meaning he could be lying because he doesn't want to look at Bill
because he feels guilty, if we take the latter then it suggests that Nick is embarrassed about his
actions and doesn't want to admit that he hurt Marjorie. The use of double entrées make the
audience think more about there own perception and is also economical because it is using one word
to convey two meanings. There is also a vagueness in the story where we the audience are meant to
fill in the gaps. For example the relationship between Bill and Nick is not explained, are they just
friends or is there an illusion to a homoerotic relationship? Making the audience an active reader is
the one of the main functions of an economical style.
The metaphors in the story require an active reader to perceive them. An example of an extended
metaphor in the story is fishing. In this metaphor, Nick is a fish, for whom biting would be deciding
to marry. Marjorie is hopeful that the fish are

How the Lack of Recreational Activities in Small Towns Affects the Development of Children
Although there is nothing wrong with growing up in a small town, children that do are usually not
as sociable as children that grow up in more urban areas, they tend to have a duller childhood, and
they don't know how to talk to people as well. Many sociologist have done research in the area of
childhood development and how growing up in certain environments can affect how they are later in
life, but one question has remained unanswered: How do children ... Show more content on

The answer could be as simple as: since rural children are secluded from mainstream society they
are going to be more likely to be less sociable than their urban counterparts and that because of their
lack of recreational activities in their communities that they are more likely to engage in illegal
activities such as drug use to try and entertain themselves. While this may answer the question, a lot
of the answer still remains to be unfound. In order to fully answer this question more research needs
to be done into the subject and we need to get the input of children in these communities. A good
way to continue this research would be to go into rural communities that recently added recreational
activities and see how it has changed the youth in those communities. Researchers will continue to
go over this topic for years to come and one day they will be able to find a complete answer to the
question, but for now this answer will have to suffice.

What Is The Purpose Of The Lottery
"The Lottery", a short story by Shirley Jackson, features a small town during the highly anticipated
lottery. The lottery is an annual event, organized by Mr. Summers, the "jovial" man who runs the
coal business. It is a highly important time, as the whole town comes to the town square on the day
of the lottery. The guidelines are quite simple: everyone takes a slip of paper out of the symbolic
black box, and the slip of paper with the black mark carved on it, is the "lucky winner". But the
town's definition of the lottery is different一usually, a lottery is a valuable thing to win. But when
Tessie Hutchinson, the "lucky winner" gets her reward by getting stoned to death by the rest of the
villagers, it is clear that winning this lottery can't be a good affair... so what is the purpose of this
lottery? Rather than discontinuing the lottery, the town continues with it because they don't want to

To begin with, the lottery is especially old. In support of this, on page 23, lines 280–282 it says :
"'Seventy–seventh year I been in the lottery,' Old Man Warner said as he went through the crowd.
'Seventy–seventh time .'" Old Man Warner is the oldest man in town. If he remembers participating

I believe that it is better for people to live in smaller towns rather than big cities. Bigcits are always
so cluserd and are really dirty. Small towns are spread out from each other and you can have a lot of
land to have fun as a kid. In big cities you can't have a lot of fun because you're so close to everyone
else and they could get mad and call the police on you. But when you live in a small town you can
make all the noise you want if you live out in the country.
There is an abundance of reasons to live in a small town, and more and more people are moving out
of the city to the countryside saying that their reasons to live in a small town started with wanting a
slower pace of life, or a better

Southern Gothic Literature : S-Town
Is Stown a classic or contemporary piece? S–Town, a classic piece of southern gothic literature, the
story of John B. McLemore, a man living in the terrible town of Woodstock, Alabama, who has to
deal with violence, social issues and decay everyday. S–Town brings back southern gothic literature
in this classic southern story of John B. McLemore and his town. S–Town fits into the southern
gothic classic category although it's a bit different from most stories from this genre. S–Town, a
classical piece of southern gothic literature, the story of John B. McLemore, a man living in a
terrible town, who has to deal with violence, social issues and decay everyday.
An important characteristic of southern gothic literature is the topic of violence. When talking about
violence it usually means slavery. The men in Stown make it clear that violence is big part of
Woodstock and its culture. During the story of John B. McLemore's life and the story of Woodstock,
Alabama we hear of multiple violent acts and violence in general. Tyler says, "But you know, he's
done said this stuff so many times." And my old lady was sitting here on the porch with me, because
I'm like, look, I'm about to just go over there. And she said, Tyler, if you keep running over there
every time he says he's going to kill himself, you're going to go crazy from this shit. He just keeps
on telling you that to keep getting you to come down there, and you can't just live your whole life
around John". During the podcast

Summary Of Shirley Jackson's The Lottery
Is it Worth It?
In "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, Jackson writes the story from a third person's point of view to
tell a story about this village that celebrates this annual event. The narrator tells us all these details
about the event but leaves the most important detail out until the very end. When people normally
hear the word "Lottery" they quickly think winning is a positive thing but for the villagers in "The
Lottery" winning isn't something they look forward to. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" uses irony,
foreshadowing, and symbolism to build suspense throughout the story and make the ending of the
story a realization rather than a surprise to the reader.
Every year villagers gather together in the town square to begin the annual "Lottery" which
everyone is required to attend. The setting is a small featureless town we're only three hundred
people lived. In other towns, it normally takes longer but in this town the lottery was finished right
before lunch. School wasn't in session so kids showed up first. The girls started conversations
amongst themselves and the boys, Bobby Martin, Harry Jones, and Dickie Delacroix, began to
pocket stones. Husbands and then wives show up after and gather their families while waiting for
Mr. Summer to arrive with the black box. Once he arrived chatter amongst everyone died. At this
point in the story everyone begins to become nervous and once the black box is placed on the stool
all the villagers make sure to keep their distance

Character Analysis Of The Lottery By Mrs. Hutchinson

  • 1. Character Analysis Of The Lottery By Mrs. Hutchinson In the story, "The Lottery", the characters are introduced in a carefree way. One character, Tessie Hutchinson, was introduced as a woman who had forgotten an important day in her community and was late to the event. Throughout "The Lottery", Mrs. Hutchinson displays two main traits. First, Mrs. Hutchinson displays being carefree. Mrs. Hutchinson was very calm when she walked up to the crowd as she said, "'Clean forgot what day it was'" (Jackson). This shows how common an ordeal the lottery was in their way of life. The lottery did not seem to make anyone super nervous. This shows how Mrs. Hutchinson developed as a character throughout the story. Mrs. Hutchinson was also frightened. When Mr. Hutchinson unfolded his slip of paper Tessie began to scream of unfairness (Jackson). Mrs. Hutchinson shows how frightened she is for her life because she knows that she has a higher chance of dying once her husband is shown with the only special slip of paper. Another character in "The Lottery" is Mr. Summers.Mr. Summers shows two main traits while in the story as well. Mr. Summers is a married man, without children, that "...[has the] time and energy to devote to civic activities", which makes him responsible in his town(Jackson). This is important to the story because he is the proctor of an age–old tradition that kills people. Mr. Summers almost acts as if "The Lottery" is just like any other community event like a county fair. He acts with no remorse because it is traditional to have the lottery. Mr. Summers also is traditional. As he is setting up for the lottery to begin, he remembers and performs a lot of rituals that occur during this event like using the same black drawing box or calling up each male head of household or making up the family lists after everyone was gathered (Jackson). Mr. Summers is knit picky about what happens as the day moves along because if anything goes wrong, he is responsible and could possibly be disciplined for the mistake. If there was a mistake the result could quite possibly be death because that is the whole purpose of the lottery, to rid the community of a person, by stoning. Therefore, Mr. Summers would not stray from the traditional ways of performing the lottery at all. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rats ran on the streets and trash was thrown all over the roads. The night glared at whoever was outside at anytime. The air always had a smell of blood in it. Never was there any sun or color. One written by Ray Bradbury in 1950's and titled "The Whole Towns Sleeping". The other was written by Wilkie Collins in 1856 and entitled "A Terribly Strange Bed". "The Whole Towns Sleeping" is about a middle–aged spinster called "Lavinia" 37, who goes to the cinema with her friends while a mysterious killer, is at large. The ravine is the mysterious area of the town like a 'black dynamo', surrounded by 'secret mists' and 'odours' of a "rank greenhouse". The description of the ravine creates tension and shows it to be a constant threat with its dark and gloomy images. In "A Terribly Strange Bed" the main part of the story is set in the back street of a seedy gambling house in Paris. The atmosphere is described, "Here, there was nothing but tragedy – mute weird tragedy. The quiet in the room was horrible". This builds up tension effectively, and creates an effective image of the gamblers as they watch in silence, and their desperate need to win to survive. Lavinia Nebbs the protagonist in "The Whole Towns Sleeping" is described as "very straight and slim", a typical spinster who has lots of confidence in herself, and quite sensible, but occasionally craves excitement, which inevitably will lead her to make errors in judgment. • 7. Life In A City Is Better Than Living In The City Kimi 胡劼 No. 0210650 12/30/10 Persuasive Essay (Revised) Life in Cities is of More Quality in China In recent years, people have paid close attention to the quality of daily life a lot, and one of the most heated debating topics is whether people should choose to live in the city or in the countryside in China. There are millions of peasants living in rural areas, but a large number of them are rushing into urban areas to get a job every year. People living in the countryside are anxious to begin their urban life, meanwhile people in cities prefer to live a peaceful life far away from town. As for me, in China, living in the city is much better than living in the countryside in that citizens would surely live a more convenient life, have more choices in every aspect of life and would also achieve a sense of accomplishment in their enriching life. Since some areas of countryside in China are still in poor situation, cities offer people a more comfortable and convenient life. In some suburban regions, it is troublesome to go out, but the transportation system in almost every city in China is quite developed now. Citizens could choose different vehicles as they wish in cities, such as car, bus, metro and even high speed railway. People living in Wuhan in central region of China could reach Guangzhou in South China by high speed rail within several hours, in which period people living in rural areas may just get to town from home. In cities, people could enjoy the door– to–door transport service easily meanwhile going out is quite an inconvenient action for many people living in suburban in China. This sort of obvious contrast can be seen by everybody. Besides the aspect of transportation, there are more plentiful living facilities in cities than in the countryside. As a whole, the infrastructure in most cities in China is of high quality. The systems of medical treatment, health care, physical training, etc are available for citizens to make use of to keep their life quality in a high level. Once citizens have a problem in daily life, there are often corresponding ways for them to solve it. While in the most areas of countryside in China, there is still even a lack of medical security now. Living in the city ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Renewing Husbandry Analysis Production–based farming has provided small communities a new effective way of farming; however, this type of farming has created more issues than solutions. In "Renewing Husbandry," Wendell Berry discusses the way communities have lost the practice of husbandry in farming to production–based farming. Also, he depicts the side effects production–based farming has on the small communities by demonstrating the loss of connection the farmers now have with the land and community they provide for. Production–based farming destroys the unity of small communities. Production–based farming drives people out of the smaller communities because the production damages the economy of the town. Berry reflects, "The little towns that once had been social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When companies own farmland for production, the farmers who grow the goods do not have a voice in the company's decisions and the way the goods produced are treated. Farmers who own their land have the voice to demand the way their goods sell and the choice to provide for the family. The farmers who grow the goods for the companies no longer have the relationship with the land and the produce, because the company who owns the farm has total control over the production process. The community no longer receives the profits from the goods because the companies take the money from the owners leaving them with a small income for the mass amount of goods produced. In addition to farmers working for companies, the companies more employees in the farm than owners. Berry states in the passage: "It has transformed the United States from a country of many owners to a country of many employees" (2005, para. 19). In the country, farmers work for profit instead of working for their communities or family. The unity of the community decreases when fewer owners own the farms because the farmers no longer provide the goods only for the community the goods ship to many other places in the country. We sat on the end of the bed until 6:30 am while Alice explained to me that it was Mrs. Gilbert on the phone, a co–worker at the Elementary School, and the wife of Mr. Gilbert the town's Sherriff. She told Alice that her student Janie Augustine went missing on her way home from school that day. And that a few hours before a camper found her dead in the Red furrow woods, 17 miles away from the Elementary School. And when Alice asked Mrs. Gilbert how Janie died. Mrs. Gilbert choked on her words as she said Janie was murder. She bled out after being hit with an ax in the stomach. Bergen County is a very densely populated county, but I want to look closer, I want to look as a specific town within Bergen County; I want to take a look at the Borough of Fair Lawn. Tension in Witch's Money Essay Tension in Witch's Money In John Collier's "Witch's Money," the stranger who suddenly appears in a remote mountain village in Spain is initially seen by Foiral as an unwelcome madman. Certainly his surrealist description of the landscape must seem a symptom of insanity to one unfamiliar with the trends of modern art. Once he offers a nice sum of money to buy Foiral's house, however, the stranger is treated with a new attitude. He is still not completely accepted by the community that he has moved into, but he does wield a new type of power simply because only he can produce cash from paper billets. When Foiral finally receives his money from the cheque, he is under the impression that all cheques give thirty thousand francs. Knowing that the stranger has a whole book of cheques, Foiral and his friends immediately feel jealous of the outsider: he has something that they want. A stranger –– a madman –– who has more than any member of the community, has invaded their town. Because he has so much and they so little, the villagers feel that it is their right to take the stranger's magic cheques . . . even if, in the process, they must take his life as well. Ironically, tragically, their righteous ambition leads to their own destruction. With the stranger dead, the people of the community help themselves to his cheques. Money begins to exchange hands as goods are bought and deals are made. The progress of economic development comes to the village. No one is afraid to dig up the money that they have saved because as soon as the cheques are cashed there will be no worries, and the town can continue to "prosper." But as every man meditates on their "two of these excellent billets," they begin to feel that "they were too rich to speak to each other" (71, 72). • 13. British Towns And Cities Overcrowded British towns and cities were overcrowded. Population began increasing due to more people moving in. As businesses began to boom and the national markets grew, more people from the countryside flocked to the towns and the new factories because they wanted jobs. Small towns became large cities and the city of London grew from a population of 2 million in 1840 to 5 million forty years later. This resulted in more people in a country (Great Britain) living in cities than in rural areas like never before. Houses were tiny and densely packed because as new towns and cities began to rapidly develop, the need for housing escalated. In a rush to build the houses, many were constructed too quickly in rows and often back to back "every scrap of space left by the old way of building has been filled up and patched over until not a foot of land is left to be further occupied". And if houses being really close together externally wasn't enough, they were also very crowded internally as a result of the fast increase in population. Five to Nine people lived in a "small one– storied, one–roomed hut" which was as big as an apartment and families had to share the tight space with other families or even complete strangers. The reality of it is that I was raised in a small rural town, this particular tiny town goes by the name of Hotchkiss, CO. I suppose I would say my real ethnicity is Rural–Conservative American. At Bartlett High School on November 3, 2017, I watched a play called Fools by Neil Simon. Fools is about a determined, young schoolteacher named Leon Tolchinsky who travels to the village of Kulyenchikov and teaches Sophia Zubritsky, the daughter of the only doctor within the village. As he arrives, he meets a handful of people, including a something, something shepherd, postman, butcher, and vendor, and discovers that the town's lack of intelligence was due to a two–hundred– year old spell that has the ability to be broken by the intelligence or marriage of Sophia. With Kulyenchikov's fate in Leon's hand, he and his growing love for her attempts to teach Sophia in order to avoid letting her go to be married by Count Gregor and saving the village from lost knowledge forever. I heard something about Elizabeth's father, and how he made a witch cake. I couldn't hear the rest. I leaned too hard on the bench, dropping one of pa's heavy boots. I knew they heard me when I felt large callused hands grab my arms. Whap! Whap! My bum stung and my as throat sore I ran to my room, whimpering. I just wanted to hear what happened. They are my friends! I need to know what is going on with them. Just a few days after the witch cake incident, the so called afflicted girls named three women they believed were bewitching them: Tituba, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborne (Brooks). When father said this, it wasn't in private. He said that the other girls told first. My friends told later that the slave, Tituba, and the same two other women bewitched them ... • 26. Movie, Blade Runner, The City And People Are Very Similar... In the movie, Blade Runner, the city and people are very similar. They are both very different and mysterious. The characters are not very well explained at first so give that mystery feel to them. The city is very dark and different that other normal cities which make the city also look mysterious. The director did this to add depth to the film and have the unknown so you can interpret your own ideas into the movie. The city and the people are all characters in a film. They are the parts of the film that tell the story. The characters all play important roles. Without all of them the movie would not be the same. It could have the same storyline but with different people and a different city it becomes a new film. The city helps show the hidden meanings in movies that the characters don 't say. If they did say these things the city showed it would be a long boring movie. In books these meanings are normally written but because there are no words in movies normally, the director must show these thoughts. He will normally show this through the weather of the city or just they way the city is acting. The city may be a busy city with cars running around everywhere or really quiet with no one on the streets. The movie's characters and cities are both needed to create a scene that has depth and is interesting. If neither of these are visible then the film could not have been written very well. Both the city and people should be similar to have the film make sense. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Small Town Research Paper Even in a small town, there is a variety of art everywhere you look. Some art is more unique and interesting than others, which is one of the many reasons why I love our small town. The art in this community has a special place in my life because I have grown up in this area; Humphrey's county was and always will be my childhood. Although many things in Humphrey's County interest me, some tend to fascinate me more than others. The three pieces of art that interest me the most in this community are Paint Rock, Cherry Bottom, and the train at the City Hall. Paint Rock, a three– dimensional piece of art, is very well known in my community; many people go every year to paint their name or draw on not only the rock, but the road as well. The focal ... A derailed tank car loaded with 2,000 gallons of propane exploded in "a ball of fire", hurling burning bodies into the air and setting downtown Waverly afire. Art with a history is the best kind of art. This piece of art is definitely not for sale, and probably never will be. It marks a day in history; in fact, one that many will never forget. The train car is important in my community because it represents the deaths of many loved ones on the sad day of 1978. The train is one of my many favorite sites because it has a meaning behind it and is held close to many people's hearts that lost their relatives and loved ones in the unpredictable explosion. In this case, I believe that this piece of art is unique. Many trains explode, but not in Waverly, Tennessee. This terrible accident will forever be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Similarities Between Omelas And The Lottery In the fictional short stories "The lottery" and "The ones who walk away from Omelas" the authors convey that sacrifice is the true key to happiness, prosperity, and livelihood, but both authors hold different views on how these goals are achieved. In both stories the authors show different types of sacrifice and how it helps hold together a Utopian society. In "Omelas" it describes a beautiful town and how everything is perfect, it talks about how there is a festival and lights with bells and singing, decorated with silver and gold streamers. From that description it makes this town sound like a year round party that never ends, but this whole "party" is depending on the suffering of a small child. "It could be a boy or a girl. It looks about six, but actually is nearly 10. It is feeble–minded. Perhaps it was born defective, or perhaps it has become imbecile through fear, malnutrition, and neglect. It picks its nose and occasionally fumbles vaguely with its toes or genitals..."(3). In "The Lottery" the society seems kind of gloomy, but all the people seem to be in a good mood at the time. • 29. Essay on Comparison of Jackson's Short Story The Lottery... Almost every person in the world holds a set of traditions which have been established and practiced for a long period of time. However, some traditions often cause us to not see the rationality despite of the destructive nature it may have. In Shirley Jackson's short story, "The Lottery", a sacrifice of one's life becomes the "jackpot" of an annual event held in a small town. This society's traditions have caused the people to do away with their rational thoughts and the values of their lives as they have become so stuck in their own cultural beliefs. In the short story, "The Lottery", Jackson's use of symbols reveals a twisting plot that isn't recognizable until nearly at the end of the story. Her use of third person point of view is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here in this village, the lottery only takes about two hours with the 300 residents that currently live there. In some towns, the lottery takes nearly two days and must be started on the 26th. Jackson writes "it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner" (156). This states that they want to get this completed so they can return home with their families and have a family lunch. Relaying no emotion to the fact that death is the outcome of this whole ordeal. In the film "The Lottery" the setting is more modern and appears to be in the 1960's even. You are able to identify this due to the articles of clothing they possess, the way the towns' people do their hair and make–up in some sort. Another clue is the shops out front of the town square, compared to the short story; it was led to believe as if none of that had come into place at the time. Also the area seems to be more industrialized than a rural town would be i.e. automobiles. It is never clear as to what day it may be until the characters give dialogue of the other towns having to start the lottery a day ahead June 27th. The town's people seem to have much more concern and empathy in the film rather than the short story because of the emphasis they put on the characters faces and their dialogue. • 30. The Lottery Short Story Analysis Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" is about an unusual traditionalistic small town that ironically gives the lottery a bad meaning. In the beginning of the story Jackson makes sure to describe the setting of the story. Jackson starts the story off by saying "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day"(1). This quote is very misleading because Jackson gives her audience a false sense of a welcoming environment. The town seems to be stuck in this traditionalistic way of doing things. When you think of the lottery one automatically thinks of money, but this story focuses more on the tragedy of the town. The story sets place in the town square with the towns people all gathered to carry out the lottery. The year is not stated but based on the description of the town's people one can assume that it is post–war time. We learn that the lottery is not a one town event, but it is conducted across several towns. We expect it to be familiar to everyone since it seems to be a "fun" time for all the town members. The story talks about how children in the town are collecting stones before the lottery begins. Mr. Summers the conductor of the lottery is responsible for getting everything ready for the lottery. The lottery takes about 2 hours but some towns take sometimes even days. Once all the slips of paper are mixed in the box all the people from the list come up and draw a slip. • 32. Hemingway's Use of Economy In The End of Something Essay Hemingway's Use of Economy In The End of Something Hemingway is renowned for his brief, simple and economical writing style. This is present in the story "The end of something", but how does he achieve this and what effect does it have on the story. Hemingway has an economical writing style, which is achieved through the repetition of words. An example of this is the use of the word "said" after any dialogue between Marjorie and Nick. This can seem quite juvenile in style, many authors would be more descriptive, but by repeating this simple and plain word Hemingway is commenting on the tediousness of their relationship. This is reinforced later when Nick remarks "it isn't fun anymore". When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are several lines and words in the story that have double meanings and it is for us the reader to interpret them. An example of this is the word "Lying" in the following sentence "'Yes' Nick said lying, his face on the blanket". Lying could mean one of two things, lying face down or not telling the truth. If we take the former meaning he could be lying because he doesn't want to look at Bill because he feels guilty, if we take the latter then it suggests that Nick is embarrassed about his actions and doesn't want to admit that he hurt Marjorie. The use of double entrées make the audience think more about there own perception and is also economical because it is using one word to convey two meanings. There is also a vagueness in the story where we the audience are meant to fill in the gaps. For example the relationship between Bill and Nick is not explained, are they just friends or is there an illusion to a homoerotic relationship? Making the audience an active reader is the one of the main functions of an economical style. The metaphors in the story require an active reader to perceive them. An example of an extended metaphor in the story is fishing. In this metaphor, Nick is a fish, for whom biting would be deciding to marry. Marjorie is hopeful that the fish are ... Many sociologist have done research in the area of childhood development and how growing up in certain environments can affect how they are later in life, but one question has remained unanswered: How do children ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The answer could be as simple as: since rural children are secluded from mainstream society they are going to be more likely to be less sociable than their urban counterparts and that because of their lack of recreational activities in their communities that they are more likely to engage in illegal activities such as drug use to try and entertain themselves. While this may answer the question, a lot of the answer still remains to be unfound. In order to fully answer this question more research needs to be done into the subject and we need to get the input of children in these communities. A good way to continue this research would be to go into rural communities that recently added recreational activities and see how it has changed the youth in those communities. Researchers will continue to go over this topic for years to come and one day they will be able to find a complete answer to the question, but for now this answer will have to suffice. • 34. What Is The Purpose Of The Lottery "The Lottery", a short story by Shirley Jackson, features a small town during the highly anticipated lottery. The lottery is an annual event, organized by Mr. Summers, the "jovial" man who runs the coal business. It is a highly important time, as the whole town comes to the town square on the day of the lottery. The guidelines are quite simple: everyone takes a slip of paper out of the symbolic black box, and the slip of paper with the black mark carved on it, is the "lucky winner". But the town's definition of the lottery is different一usually, a lottery is a valuable thing to win. But when Tessie Hutchinson, the "lucky winner" gets her reward by getting stoned to death by the rest of the villagers, it is clear that winning this lottery can't be a good affair... so what is the purpose of this lottery? Rather than discontinuing the lottery, the town continues with it because they don't want to upset an old tradition. To begin with, the lottery is especially old. In support of this, on page 23, lines 280–282 it says : "'Seventy–seventh year I been in the lottery,' Old Man Warner said as he went through the crowd. 'Seventy–seventh time .'" Old Man Warner is the oldest man in town. If he remembers participating in the lottery so long ago, then surely it must be a very old tradition.! • 39. Summary Of Shirley Jackson's The Lottery Is it Worth It? In "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, Jackson writes the story from a third person's point of view to tell a story about this village that celebrates this annual event. The narrator tells us all these details about the event but leaves the most important detail out until the very end. When people normally hear the word "Lottery" they quickly think winning is a positive thing but for the villagers in "The Lottery" winning isn't something they look forward to. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" uses irony, foreshadowing, and symbolism to build suspense throughout the story and make the ending of the story a realization rather than a surprise to the reader. Every year villagers gather together in the town square to begin the annual "Lottery" which everyone is required to attend. The setting is a small featureless town we're only three hundred people lived. In other towns, it normally takes longer but in this town the lottery was finished right before lunch. School wasn't in session so kids showed up first. The girls started conversations amongst themselves and the boys, Bobby Martin, Harry Jones, and Dickie Delacroix, began to pocket stones. Husbands and then wives show up after and gather their families while waiting for Mr. Summer to arrive with the black box. Once he arrived chatter amongst everyone died.
