What Is Polarization Sensitivity Of Hcg
to be explored .
Polarization sensitivity of HCG:–As polarization selectivity is important in many applications like
VCSELs. It has been shown through the literature that most of the research is done on the 1
dimensional HCGs. Because of the asymmetrical grating profile for TE and TM polarizations, 1D
HCGs are polarization sensitive. so they can provide high reflectivity in a specific polarization at a
particular wavelength. But there is a need of Polarization insensitive HCGs. Polarization
independent HCGs requires two dimensional HCG. So there is a need to study the properties of 2 D
HCGs for polarization insensitivity.

2.4 Research Gaps
Not much work has been published on performance evaluation of HCG for different values of angle
of incidence and with different wavelengths. Also the effect of polarization on the grating properties
has not been explored yet [16]. Less work has been done on tight optical confinement hollow
waveguide with low temperature dependence [52]. Older high index contrast grating based ultra–
low loss hollow core waveguides are not cost effective because of the requirement of long gratings
necessary for wave guiding [53]. No report on hollow core waveguide with high index contrast
grating as top and bottom mirror inserted as lateral periodicity [55]
2.5 Research Objectives
On the basis of the understanding established from the initial study and literature survey the
following objectives are proposed:
Design and simulation of a novel broad band and high reflective single–layer high index contrast
grating for larger bandwidth at grazing optical incidence. Design and simulation of an Hollow
Waveguide (with improved propagation characteristics– loss, dispersion, bandwidth, spot size,
optical confinement etc.) where proposed High Index Contrast Grating will be used as top and
bottom mirror. Simulation of dispersion characteristics of proposed hollow core waveguide Design

This field first became more known in the late nineteenth century. It was able to develop so much
because of the commercialization of the electric telegraph and the electrical power supply. Electrical
engineers mostly deal with power, optoelectronics, digital electronics, analog electronics, computer
science, artificial intelligence, control systems, electronics, signal processing and
telecommunications. An electrical engineer is able to create, manipulate, transmit and receive data
by electronic means such as 1's and 0's. What electrical engineers do is deal with problems
associated with large–scale electrical systems such as power, transmission, and motor control.
Electrical engineers deal with electrical components that can span from the earth all the way to
intergalactic space. One life changing invention is that of the transistors. The transistor is small
semiconductor that allows the flow of current to a source, it is able to stop or it amplify it depending
on the type used. This is only one of the many remarkable inventions electrical engineers get to deal

My Journey Into The Field Essay
I am Qingjun Wang, currently a senior at Hunan University, majoring in Electronic Engineering.
Began my journey into the field by studying in Physics and Microelectronics department of Hunan
University, where physics ranks in the top 1% of ESI global discipline. Studying on this topic,
which I am very much interested in, led me to excel in my program, earning me a GPA of 90.3 on a
100–point scale, which ranked me as the top student out of the 112 who are in my program. My life
over the last three years have revolved around attending lectures and making projects, I know that
this has aided me in gaining solid knowledge and proficient research skills. During my freshman
year at university, I implemented a system based on C programming language of student cards,
which is was suitable for consumption and helped the system with complete functions. During this
time, I was very new to the world of physics and did not have relevant experience and because of
this inexperience, I found that the most complex and challenging part of the project was
coordinating all the C++ Source Files and making sure that they work together as a Win32 Console
Application. To try to resolve these hurdles, I bombarded myself with books and articles that guided
me through the process of building my desired application, spending 8 days studying in the library
during the summer semester to ensure that I build the best one possible. Although it was very
challenging, I pushed myself to start by programming

The absorption coefficient decides how far into a material, the light of a particular wavelength can
penetrate before it is absorbed.
The photons that have an energy above the band gap, depends on the wavelength and its absorption
coefficient is not constant. The likelihood of retaining a photon relies on upon the probability of
having a photon and an electron connect so as to move starting with one energy band then onto the
next. The absorption is relatively low for photons with energy very close to that of the band gap, as

Because dn/dω and dε'/dω have the same sign, the index of refraction decreases with frequency in a
spectral region of anomalous dispersion. Anomalous dispersion can be observed experimentally if
the substance is not too opaque at the resonance frequency. E.g. certain dyes have absorption bands
in the visible region of the spectrum and exhibit anomalous dispersion in the region of these bands.
Prisms doped with these dyes produce a spectrum that is reversed, i.e. the longer wavelengths are
refracted more than the shorter wavelengths. Aperture
A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening. In photography and digital
photography, aperture is the unit of measurement that defines the size of the opening in the lens that
can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or digital sensor. The size of the
aperture is measured in F–stop. Aspherical
Aspherical lenses are lenses with complex curved surfaces, such as where the radius of curvature
changes according to distance from the optical axis. It offers excellent aberration correction
performance, which provides superior resolution, even with compact optics composed of a small
number of elements.

Nine States of Matter? The Lesser Known States of Matter...
Traditionally in school we are taught that there are only four states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and
plasma. Fortunately this is not true as that would be boring. There are also at least 4 other–less
common states and Icontest a fifth. These are Bose–Einstein condensate, photonic molecules,
quark–gluon plasma, superconductors, and superfluids. They all have unique properties that clearly
distinguish differences between them and the traditional four states. These breakthroughs could help
us in the future and have some practical uses right now.
My personal favorite state of matter is actually Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC). This state was first
achieved in 1995 (predicted in 1924 by Albert Einstein) by firing photons directly at the ... Show

Mikhael Lukin (the Physicist that led the study) wanted to know what would happen when you fired
two protons through the same space so that the first would slow down and the second would just
pass through the other. That however did not happen and the two photons emerged together bonded
through their poles.
Quark–gluon plasma (QGP) is a substance that existed "For a few millionths of a second after the
Big Bang" (Trafton). it was the "soup" that was made up of the things that protons and neutrons are
made of. These infinitesimally small particles are quarks and gluons. They exist at temperatures
around four trillion degrees. As you can imagine, it is very difficult to study these wonders through a
telescope (since they don't even exist at all in nature). so we have to make and study them up close,
using particle accelerators. The scientists that make QGP accelerate particles until they are traveling
almost the speed of light then crash them head on into one another. the heat that occurs from this
collision is enough to melt the protons into quarks and gluons. the resultant substance has almost no
friction and is almost a liquid. It used to be that when the public found out about particle
accelerators that a lot of them though that they could create a black hole with them

Abstract 2d Photonic Crystal ( Pc ) Based Power Splitter
Abstract–2D photonic crystal (PC) based power splitter with 60° bend corners is designed and
analyzed. The splitting efficiency at its bends has been improved by encapsulating rectangular
defect, thereby increasing the power transmission of about 98.1%. A simple antiresonant reflecting
optical waveguide (ARROW–B) is a polarization insensitive wave guiding, which utilizes
antiresonance reflection and provides better coupling when compared with conventional wave
guiding. We performed three–dimensional finite–difference time–domain (3–D FDTD) simulation to
calculate the power transmission of Y–splitter with ARROW–B which is about 93.3%. The PC thus
designed can provides good sharp–bend ability and power–split ability.

Light propagation in photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) is possible in terms of artificially induced
defect region [3], However, by incorporating defects in the waveguide, certain wavelengths belong
to the band gap can propagate strictly within the defects. The defects can be in the form of line
defects to achieve photonic crystal waveguides or point defects producing optical cavities. We have
presented an efficient power splitter, which divides the propagating optical power equally between
the two branching line defects.
Whereas, an important crisis in power splitter is that how light get efficiently transmitted via the
bend corners. For that various methods have been proposed i. Providing row of pores with smaller
diameter ii. Coupled cavity design and iii. Three pore–rows wide defect [2]. Although these
techniques can significantly increase the splitting efficiency, complicated time–consuming
computation is needed, consequently an alternate method is proposed to improve the power split
ability by incorporating rectangular capsule shaped defect at its bends [4]. These defects with higher
refractive index contrast provide better reflection as compared to that of other methods mentioned.
Besides the main source of propagation losses in 2D PCW has been believed to be the guided modes

The Role Of Self Assembly And The Construction Of A...
A nanoparticle is the most basic component in the construction of a nanostructure. In general, the
size of a nanoparticle spans the range between 1 and 100 nm. The properties of many conventional
materials change when formed from nanoparticles. This is typically because nanoparticles have a
greater surface area per weight than larger particles which causes them to be more reactive than
other molecules. Self–assembly refers to the process by which nanoparticles or other distinct
components spontaneously organize due to direct specific interactions and/or indirectly, through
their environment. Self–assembly is typically linked with thermodynamic equilibrium, the
organization of the structures characterized the minimum of the system's free energy. An important
aspect of self–assembly is that the building blocks organize into macroscopic structures. This can
happen through direct interactions (Interparticle forces) or through indirect interactions like using a
template or external field as a guide. The grouping of matter in nanomaterials can be broken down
into two techniques. Top–down miniaturization techniques or bottom–up methods which are
typically based on self–assembly or directed assembly. The most widely used materials in bottom–
up assembly are colloid micro– and nanoparticles. A lot of time and effort has recently been spent on
the fabrication of functional materials from organized particles. These advanced assemblies can find

Ensuring that drinks, food, and pharmaceuticals are safe for human consumption is one of the ways
by which photonics technologies enhance life. Food quality inspections and food safety have been
improved all thanks to the latest innovations in spectral imaging sensors. Direct real–time
monitoring and ruggedized in or at–line processing monitoring are now being done at high volumes.
Headwall Photonics CEO, David Bannon states that safe food supply should be maintained by
improving processing capabilities with proven technological advancements (Kelley 17). The
USDA–ARS lab, the USDA together with Headwall Photonics has combined efforts in an
experiment to study the spectral characteristics of crops by utilizing near infrared and shortwave
infrared sensors.
In 2008, Headwall Photonics developed a new imaging system called the Hyperspec Starter Kit. The
kit has been customized for use by agricultural researchers. It enables them to combine the
analytical technology of fluorescence spectroscopy and reflectance (Kelley 17). With this kit, the
use of photonics has now been enhanced further. The kit could help to detect the levels of bruising in
vegetables and fruits, the quality of pharmaceuticals, and bacterial contamination (Smith, and

How Computing Is Creating Our Lives?
What's the most fascinating shift that computing is creating in our lives? You might think it's just
"smaller, better, faster," but there is an even more dramatic story about how computing is changing
who we are as people and a society. Thanks to the wonders of technology, the idea of managing two
distinct lives has become common for many of us. We have always had the first life–our physical
existence, the one we can't escape until we die. But today many of us have also adapted a second
life. We have long had the opportunity to invent ourselves through media, historically through
writing. We could invent a newself. Yet our first lives remained dominant for most of us. But today
this second life has grown with such scale and ubiquity that it now competes with our first life. We
do this using all of the digital tools that keep us connected with people we don't actually connect
with–using Facebook, e–mail, texting, Twitter, IM and the myriad of other digital media. We can
deliberately create a unique version of our self in the digital world. What's profound is that this new
self can take on an outsized importance and fidelity. Most of us know people in these digital worlds
that we have never met. Yet we feel as if we know them and are connected to them. The balance
between these two lives is rapidly shifting as technology offers ever–richer second life experiences.
This increasing importance of our second lives is making computing even more central to us.

Investigating The Optical Performance Of Photonic Crystals
abstract Photonic crystal is a composite dielectric with periodic modulation of refractive index that
brings about unique photonic band–gap effect by which light could be totally reflected on the
surface of such material regardless of any incident angle or mode. Such bandgap effect could be
understood by investigating the optical performance of photonic crystals. In this paper, photonic
bandgap calculations are performed for two dimensional photonic crystals using matlab. Plane wave
expansion method is used to solve Maxwell's equations. The effect of lattice constant and refractive
index is investigated.
Introduction Photonic crystals are special class of optical media with periodic modulation of
refractive index by arrangement of dielectric material. They respond to light waves over a desired
range of frequencies by perfectly reflecting them or allowing them to propagate only in certain
directions or confining them within a specified volume. Photons either propagate through this
structure or they don 't. Frequencies that propagate are called modes, and groups of allowed modes
form bands. Disallowed bands of frequencies are called photonic band gaps. This property of
photonic bandgap is utilised to manipulate light propagation. In particular, we can design and
construct photonic crystals with photonic band gaps, preventing light from propagating in certain
directions with specified frequencies By transmitting signals with

Pain, Acute Pain And Chronic Pain
Pain is an experience that involves both the mind and the body. It is an uncomfortable feeling that
signals your brain that there may be something wrong with your body. Pain is an irritating and
unpleasant sensory and emotional experience which may be caused by a damage in the tissues, one
's beliefs or thoughts, or environmental stressors such as one 's job or traffic. Pain is a significant
stress both physically and emotionally. It may cause discomfort, distress or agony. It may be steady
or throbbing. It maybe stabbing, aching or pinching.
In the past, many people thought that pain was a result of a damaged tissues. However now the
researchers have come to find out that pain is an intricate process that might or might not include
tissue damage and most likely involves social, psychological and emotional factors, which can
either cause, increase, or decrease painful sensations.
There are two types of pain, acute pain and chronic pain.
Acute pain is a short– lasting pain, which can be easily described and observed. Acute pain begins
suddenly and is a sharp pain. It 's a warning of a disease or a threat to the body. Acute pain might be
just mild and may last for a moment, or it may be severe and last for weeks or months. Acute pain
does not last longer than 6 months. If the pain lasts longer than 6 months than it may proceed on to
chronic pain.
Chronic pain tends to affect a person's whole life including a change in their personality, the
activities they used to

Nanotechnology For Enhanced Solar Conversion
Egbo Kingsley O. PhD in Nanostructures for Enhanced Solar Conversion Research Proposal
Abstract The possibilities of employing a nanoscale metal topography that will employ surface
plasmon excitation phenomena towards improving the light absorption efficiency of organic solar
cells will be investigated. This goal is achievable by analytically designing and producing optically
active nanostructures which are used to excite surface plasmons at the wavelengths range dictated
by the sun in order to support the confinement of light beyond the diffraction limit, thus leading to
high weighted enhancements over a wider range of the solar spectrum. This can be achieved by
employing nanostructured materials with unique properties tailored for the materials characteristics
of II–VI nanorod systems across the solar spectrum capable of creating significant enhancements
while preventing unwanted thermal losses. Also external quantum efficiency measurements on the
nanostructured cells will be made, this is expected to demonstrate a substantial photon absorption

Quantum Physics : Quantum Computing
Quantum Computing
Less than 100 years ago, beginnings of the "new quantum theory" began. Only about 55 years after
the new quantum theory began to emerge the idea that quantum phenomena can be used to perform
computations. The idea being for a quantum computer was that classical computers would take an
extremely long time to perform huge calculations, when a simple quantum system perform these
same calculations all the time.
One property that quantum computers have been observed to have was the ability to solve
exponential growth problems without using the exponential growth in the time taken to complete the
computation. This observation represents a characteristic named quantum parallelism. When an
input is submitted in a classical computer the same outcome will always be computed. For a
quantum computer there will be many different outputs from just one single input submission. This
is because the quantum computer will compute all possible outcomes for that input simultaneously.
A quantum computer is similar to a computer, but uses the principles of quantum physics to increase
the power of the system beyond what a traditional computer can compute. A traditional computer
functions by storing data in a binary format, using "bits" that encode with either a 0 or a 1. On the
other hand, a quantum computer will use quantum bits that will encode both the 0 and the 1. The
main difference is the 0 and 1 will encode into two distinguishable quantum states. The quantum

Sampling System And Its Effect On The Speed Of System
1 . INTRODUCTION There are plenty of sampling systems are present. By using those kind of

computing. That great leap towards the future is quantum computing and in the last two years theirs
been a lot of new and exciting developments that will be discussed. The man who first came up with
the idea was Feynman a physicist who encountered a problem with classic computers. That they just
couldn't handle the amount of variable or simulate quantum physics he came up with the first
concepts of a quantum computer. Quantum computing has a made a recent leap forward that can be
attributed to a few factors. The factors are that in last few year's major companies like google, Intel
and IBM have started to or have increased their resources and manpower on making quantum
computing a reality. In 2014 John Martinis and his colleagues at the University of California, Santa
Barbara were working to make qubit gates more reliable and controllable. During their research and

My Career In Energy Technology And Surface Chemistry
Background My career in energy technology and surface chemistry began in 2012, when I started
my master's coursework and research in electrochemistry at the University of Louisville's
Department of Chemistry. Since then I have developed an extensive skillset, focusing mainly on the
development and usage of semiconductor materials such as titanium oxide (TiO2), tin–oxide
(SnO2), birnessite–manganese oxide (b–MnO2), and neodymium oxide (Nd2O3). I have extensively
studied the photophysics and photochemistry of energetic nanomaterials in order to explore the
fundamentals of charge transfer dynamics, catalytic properties, and mechanisms for the conversion
of solar energy to electric energy to produce renewable electricity. Later in my doctoral ... Show

Understanding the basic science behind any new technology is the backbone for further
development for commercialization. I chemically linked gold nanoparticles and a molecular
conductor to prepare high efficiency solar cells. Recently, I employed the hybrid structure of rare
earth materials and TiO2 nanoparticles as another strategy in the development of high efficiency
solar cells. Rare earth materials are new to the research in solar cells. The current guidelines for the
preparation of solar cells in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Louisville are based
directly on my research. My work on lithium ion batteries, where I prepared mesoporous b–MnO2
as a cathode material, has been heavily cited world–widely and becoming a guideline for innovative
new energy storage devices. After completing my doctoral degree at the University of Louisville, I
turned my focus to the surface chemistry of nanomaterials for preparing bioconjugates, a
continuation of my work on surface chemistry on nanomaterials during my postdoctoral research. In
another work during the postdoctoral research period, I was able to publish a work on
dielectrophoresis manipulation of metal nanoparticles to increase substantially the amount of
frequency of collisions (by the factor of 101–103) of the metal nanoparticles with an
ultramicroelectrode (Analytical Chemistry, articles ASAP, 08/07/2017). This technique has the

Project Objectives Of Femtosecond Light Fields
Project objective and Excepted Significance:
This work aims to demonstrate petahertz optical–field–induced current signal control in electronic
nanocircuit utilizing synthesized femtosecond light fields. That promises an increase in the speed of
data processing and information encoding on rates that exceed 1 Pbit/sec, million times faster than
the current technology. It will likely extend the frontiers of modern electronics and information
processing technologies into the PHz realm. This work will have a broad impact on the
advancements of nanophotonics technologies, most notably in fiber–based telecommunications
networks and the photonic computing field and opening a new realm of information technology.
Basic principle: In this work, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The produced net charge can be detected by ammeter connected to the two electrodes. This
photoinduced current signal inside the nanocircuit is following the driver laser field
instantaneously3–5. Therefore, it can be controlled by tailoring the driving electric field1,2.
Experimental approach:
Light field synthesis. The PI is very capable to lead this project to the ultimate success. He
engineered and developed the unique LFS device (Fig. 1). Also, he demonstrated a full control of
synthesizing light field waveforms from the LFS with attosecond (10–18s) temporal resolution on
demand in (Nature 530, 66–70, (2016). The basic idea of the LFS apparatus (Fig. 1) is based on
dividing a supercontinuum laser light ( 2 octaves) into four different laser spectral channels. The
laser pulse of each channel is compressed to their Fourier limit (shortest duration) before all the
pulses coherently superimpose at the exit of the apparatus and forming one laser broadband–short (2
fs) pulse. The tailoring of the waveform at the exit is possible by controlling the relative phases and
intensities of the four spectral channels inside the synthesizer. This tailoring process is automatized
to obtain the desired waveform of the output electric field by a programming code developed by the

Applications Of Photonic Circuits
2.1 Introduction
There have been extensive research in field the integrated photonics and industry in recent years.
There photonic circuits are advantageous as compared to conventional electronic circuits in a vast
range of applications.. Therefore, so much research have been done on photonic devices, such as
HCGs and photonic crystal based hollow waveguides, Bragg reflectors and their integrations with
electronic devices.
2.2 Literature Review
High index contrast gratings have been a very appealing choice over conventional DBRs in terms of
high reflection, size etc, also unlike DBRs, they provide phase and polarization control of light. The
huge mismatch between the electronic and photonic devices blocks the realization of high ... Show

So in order to increase the delay of the structure ,the input waveguide is extended with sharp bend
waveguide and the output waveguide with a smooth bend waveguide. The modified D–flip flop
structure has been operated with a delay of more than two fold of the basic structure by having
nearly the same CR at the output. The simulation results as well as compact design of the proposed
structure make it suitable to be a part of photonic integrated circuit.
Takeo Katayama et al. – 2016 [42] have done research on the optical coupling between a
polarization–independent high–index–contrast grating (HCG) and two orthogonal in–plane
waveguides. They have fabricated HCG with waveguides on a SOI (silicon–on–insulator) substrate.
The proposed waveguide–coupled HCG can be used into a polarization bi–stable vertical–cavity
surface–emitting laser (VCSEL), which would switch the output waveguide by changing the lasing
polarization of the VCSEL. It has been demonstrated that we can switch a waveguide with a strong
output by changing the polarization of light injected into the HCG. The light is more strongly
coupled to the waveguide in the direction perpendicular to the polarization of the incident light than
to that in the parallel direction.
Eungtaek Kim et al. – 2016 [43] have suggested functional passivation layers in the form of a
distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) which is composed of ZnS and LiF for transparent thin–film

Personal Narrative Analysis
Before reading the chapter on status and prestige, I never realized to what level money develops
class, which contribute to status and prestige in our capitalist society. However, I was aware that we
are all conditioned to seek prestige. Three of things that confer prestige are occupation, income, and
education. As mentioned in the textbook, the five occupations with the highest prestige are, in order:
Physicians, Lawyers, Professors, Engineers, and Clergy. However, in my opinion, military and
public defenders such as police officers and firefighters should be given status distinction above
physicians and lawyers because they put their lives on the line each day. (I suppose this could be

In the end the performance of software Defined Optical Networks is evaluated.
Keywords– Software Defined Networks, Optical Networks.
1. Introduction
The major goal of Software Defined networks is separate the control plane and the data plane and
passing the control to a SDN controller for the programmability of the network resources. The SDN
architecture consist of basically 3 layers– (i) the infrastructure layer (ii) the control layer and (iii) the
application layer (from top to bottom). The connecting interface between the control and application
layer is termed as the NorthBound Interface while between the control layer and the infrastructure
layer is termed as SouthBound Interface. The SouthBound Interface uses the Open Flow Protocol to
communicate with the lower level switches. The Controller is the main intelligent device present in
the architecture that offers a centralized view of the whole network [1].
Fig 1– SDN architecture
Optical Networks provide a way of transmitting the user signal in an optical medium by converting
them into light signals. Recent advances in the optical networking technologies enables the transport
networks to be more intelligent and allows more flexibility in multiplexing and switching functions
[2].
1.1 SDN Controlled Optical Networks

The Impact Of Technology In Education
In my experience, doing research away from Caltech allows for students to learn how research is
done at other institutions while gaining a new perspective on another part of the world. In the
summer of 2017, I worked under the supervision of Dr. Franz Kaertner and Dr. Phillip Keathley at
MIT in the Optics and Quantum Electronics group. I was introduced to optoelectronic devices and
optical–field–controlled emission of electrons. During the ten weeks of my SURF, we made
significant progress on the problem of determining if the emission was through field–dependent
tunneling. However, to show field–dependency, we needed very fine intensity control. We tackled
this problem of fine intensity control in the first half of my SURF using an Arduino ... Show more

In addition, my research in Boston was faster–paced than any research I had done before. I believe
that the change of pace increased my productivity in the lab, as I had to work hard to meet certain
milestones every week. Through this experience, I gained a better understanding of what kind of
research environment I perform best in. My time in Boston confirmed my interest in continuing to
do research while giving me a background in optoelectronic devices. I hope to pursue a PhD after
graduating from Caltech, and I believe that my SURF will be an invaluable asset for any future
research. I was also given the opportunity to explore a city I had never seen before. I saw baseball
games, concerts, and fireworks, and on top of having ten productive weeks of research, I was lucky
enough to simultaneously spend ten fulfilling and eventful weeks in a wonderful city.
If selected for the University of Tokyo summer program, I would like to continue my research of
optoelectronic devices with Dr. Yoshiaki Nakano. Dr. Nakano's work involves studying photonic
integrated circuits to create useful devices with applications in optical communications, medical
imaging, and optical quantum computing. This research is in a field very similar to that of the lab I
worked in at MIT. However, compared to my group at MIT, Dr. Nakano's work is more geared
towards practical applications and utilizing photonic circuits to create devices. Working in Dr.

We Need For Food Security For The Rising Global Population...
Farming technologies and strategies have evolved over thousands of years and have adapted to new
crops, environments, and needs. The need for food security for the rising global population calls for
new technologies that promise higher and healthier yields. Currently, photonic and optical
technologies help to make soils stronger, food safer to consume, and grapes sweeter. Imaging
sensors and lasers mounted on aircraft, lidar, fluorescence spectroscopy, and energy efficient LEDs
are some of the newest farming and food processing technologies that promise to revolutionize the
industry (Chan 112). Photonics technologies can predict the level of proteins in wheat harvests, map
the quality of water for the safety of fish stocks, and screen for any contaminants in tomatoes,
spinach, and other foods. A wide range of optical sensors are applied in agriculture; they range from
sensors that analyze soil attributes to those installed in combination to ascertain protein content in
grains when they are harvested. In essence, photonics technologies are assisting farmers, food
processors, and famine–prone areas of the world to attain food security.
The health of soils
Currently, infrared sensing technologies have taken a pivotal role in the agricultural sector. The
infrared sensors are being used to monitor specific agricultural areas by way of determining the
health of soil within the area, its nutrient contents well as its hydrology. The techniques which

I Am A International Competitor
I am a learner. I am a sporting competitor. I am not afraid of failure. I am eager to learn the lessons
required to reach the top. I dare say it is a very pleasurable mix. My views on learning are not
extraordinary. They are however centred on comprehensive and investigative approaches to
engineering problems. I am happiest when I am identifying problems – in a complex circuit, in
control systems, logic and digital circuits or simply the detection of flaws in coding. When the
problem is accessible and simultaneously acts as an intellectual stimulant I recognise an automatic
leveraging of inner resources and a gearing up of the mind to solve the issue. I find myself thinking
furiously adopting several parallel courses of action and a range of approaches which will result in
the best fastest solution to the problem. The entire exercise is meditative with the focus resting
solely on the end result. Every problem can be solved at different levels of abstraction and by
implementing different strategies. So then, the knowledge base acquired through class lectures and
the committed guidance from tutors, from peer reviewed journals and publications, from interactive
workshops and seminars, from the engaging technical discussions and debates comprise the raw
material to work with. What a qualified professional does with the vast pools of information largely

Human Area Network (HAN), also referred to as a wireless human area network (WHAN) or a body
sensor network (BSN), is a wireless network of wearable computing devices. In particular, the
wireless network comprises of several miniaturized Body Sensor Units (BSUs) together with a
single Body Central Unit (BCU). The development of WHAN technology started around 1995
around the idea of using wireless personal area network (WPAN) technologies to implement
communications near, on, and around the human body. About seven years later, the term "HAN"
came into existence to refer systems where communication is entirely on, within, and in the
immediate presence of a human body. A WHAN system can use WPAN wireless network
technologies as gateways to reach longer network ranges. Human Area Networking (HAN) is a
technology that safely and securely turns the surface of the human body into a data transmission

The Synthesis Of Semiconductor Devices
The synthesis of semiconductor devices in microelectronics and photonics applications has always
fascinated me, and the field of developing electronic and photonic solid–state devices is a field that I
find continuously interesting and rewarding. The physics behind these devices and their
manufacturing are consistently setting new limits or allowing for new methods that produce useful
applications. By embracing and driving research, industries which rely on evolving electronic
devices and methods enjoy a rapid pace of development. Because of this, we see photonic solutions
proposed as an alternative to the more physical electronic devices. Moreover, we see approaches that
integrate these worlds. My interest in these fields will require an extensive academic and research
foundation regarding devices that rely heavily on quantum, electromagnetic and other phenomena. It
will also require me to initially focus my efforts before exploring a breadth of other fields and
applications that will become an integral part of my research repertoire. My academic interests and
career objectives span both theoretical and practice–based branches of learning. I have seen how
many factors in epitaxial growth of groups III and V semiconductor materials may render a great
theoretical design difficult to realize. The challenges in solving and computing for several equations
and in reaching a trade–off in designs also need to prove viability. This is only obtainable through a

What Is Polarization Sensitivity Of Hcg

  • 1. What Is Polarization Sensitivity Of Hcg to be explored . Polarization sensitivity of HCG:–As polarization selectivity is important in many applications like VCSELs. It has been shown through the literature that most of the research is done on the 1 dimensional HCGs. Because of the asymmetrical grating profile for TE and TM polarizations, 1D HCGs are polarization sensitive. so they can provide high reflectivity in a specific polarization at a particular wavelength. But there is a need of Polarization insensitive HCGs. Polarization independent HCGs requires two dimensional HCG. So there is a need to study the properties of 2 D HCGs for polarization insensitivity. Analysis of propagation characteristic of HCG based hollow optical waveguide:– optical waveguide is the basic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2.4 Research Gaps Not much work has been published on performance evaluation of HCG for different values of angle of incidence and with different wavelengths. Also the effect of polarization on the grating properties has not been explored yet [16]. Less work has been done on tight optical confinement hollow waveguide with low temperature dependence [52]. Older high index contrast grating based ultra– low loss hollow core waveguides are not cost effective because of the requirement of long gratings necessary for wave guiding [53]. No report on hollow core waveguide with high index contrast grating as top and bottom mirror inserted as lateral periodicity [55] 2.5 Research Objectives On the basis of the understanding established from the initial study and literature survey the following objectives are proposed: Design and simulation of a novel broad band and high reflective single–layer high index contrast grating for larger bandwidth at grazing optical incidence. Design and simulation of an Hollow Waveguide (with improved propagation characteristics– loss, dispersion, bandwidth, spot size, optical confinement etc.) where proposed High Index Contrast Grating will be used as top and bottom mirror. Simulation of dispersion characteristics of proposed hollow core waveguide Design and simulation of a Bragg

  • 4. My Journey Into The Field Essay I am Qingjun Wang, currently a senior at Hunan University, majoring in Electronic Engineering. Began my journey into the field by studying in Physics and Microelectronics department of Hunan University, where physics ranks in the top 1% of ESI global discipline. Studying on this topic, which I am very much interested in, led me to excel in my program, earning me a GPA of 90.3 on a 100–point scale, which ranked me as the top student out of the 112 who are in my program. My life over the last three years have revolved around attending lectures and making projects, I know that this has aided me in gaining solid knowledge and proficient research skills. During my freshman year at university, I implemented a system based on C programming language of student cards, which is was suitable for consumption and helped the system with complete functions. During this time, I was very new to the world of physics and did not have relevant experience and because of this inexperience, I found that the most complex and challenging part of the project was coordinating all the C++ Source Files and making sure that they work together as a Win32 Console Application. To try to resolve these hurdles, I bombarded myself with books and articles that guided me through the process of building my desired application, spending 8 days studying in the library during the summer semester to ensure that I build the best one possible. Although it was very challenging, I pushed myself to start by programming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Principles Of Photonics And Optical Engineering University of Texas at Arlington EE5380: Principles of Photonics & Optical Engineering EXTRA CREDIT Supriya Kavilkar 100 109 5019 15 August 2015 Absorption coefficient The absorption coefficient decides how far into a material, the light of a particular wavelength can penetrate before it is absorbed. The photons that have an energy above the band gap, depends on the wavelength and its absorption coefficient is not constant. The likelihood of retaining a photon relies on upon the probability of having a photon and an electron connect so as to move starting with one energy band then onto the next. The absorption is relatively low for photons with energy very close to that of the band gap, as only those electrons directly at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because dn/dω and dε'/dω have the same sign, the index of refraction decreases with frequency in a spectral region of anomalous dispersion. Anomalous dispersion can be observed experimentally if the substance is not too opaque at the resonance frequency. E.g. certain dyes have absorption bands in the visible region of the spectrum and exhibit anomalous dispersion in the region of these bands. Prisms doped with these dyes produce a spectrum that is reversed, i.e. the longer wavelengths are refracted more than the shorter wavelengths. Aperture A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening. In photography and digital photography, aperture is the unit of measurement that defines the size of the opening in the lens that can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or digital sensor. The size of the aperture is measured in F–stop. Aspherical Aspherical lenses are lenses with complex curved surfaces, such as where the radius of curvature changes according to distance from the optical axis. It offers excellent aberration correction performance, which provides superior resolution, even with compact optics composed of a small number of elements. • 7. Nine States of Matter? The Lesser Known States of Matter... Traditionally in school we are taught that there are only four states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Fortunately this is not true as that would be boring. There are also at least 4 other–less common states and Icontest a fifth. These are Bose–Einstein condensate, photonic molecules, quark–gluon plasma, superconductors, and superfluids. They all have unique properties that clearly distinguish differences between them and the traditional four states. These breakthroughs could help us in the future and have some practical uses right now. My personal favorite state of matter is actually Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC). This state was first achieved in 1995 (predicted in 1924 by Albert Einstein) by firing photons directly at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mikhael Lukin (the Physicist that led the study) wanted to know what would happen when you fired two protons through the same space so that the first would slow down and the second would just pass through the other. That however did not happen and the two photons emerged together bonded through their poles. Quark–gluon plasma (QGP) is a substance that existed "For a few millionths of a second after the Big Bang" (Trafton). it was the "soup" that was made up of the things that protons and neutrons are made of. These infinitesimally small particles are quarks and gluons. They exist at temperatures around four trillion degrees. As you can imagine, it is very difficult to study these wonders through a telescope (since they don't even exist at all in nature). so we have to make and study them up close, using particle accelerators. The scientists that make QGP accelerate particles until they are traveling almost the speed of light then crash them head on into one another. the heat that occurs from this collision is enough to melt the protons into quarks and gluons. the resultant substance has almost no friction and is almost a liquid. It used to be that when the public found out about particle accelerators that a lot of them though that they could create a black hole with them Superconductors are not new, they were discovered in 1911 by Heike Onnes when he had just succeeded at liquefying helium (a few degrees ... Γ can be calculated easily by neglecting the grating and considering the laser structure as a uniform waveguide, while the determination of the quality Q–factor is not simple and straightforward for photonic crystal cavities. In the literature, there are few experimental and several numerical methods to determine the quality factor of a DFB cavity. The splitting efficiency at its bends has been improved by encapsulating rectangular defect, thereby increasing the power transmission of about 98.1%. A simple antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW–B) is a polarization insensitive wave guiding, which utilizes antiresonance reflection and provides better coupling when compared with conventional wave guiding. We performed three–dimensional finite–difference time–domain (3–D FDTD) simulation to calculate the power transmission of Y–splitter with ARROW–B which is about 93.3%. Light propagation in photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) is possible in terms of artificially induced defect region [3], However, by incorporating defects in the waveguide, certain wavelengths belong to the band gap can propagate strictly within the defects. The defects can be in the form of line defects to achieve photonic crystal waveguides or point defects producing optical cavities. We have presented an efficient power splitter, which divides the propagating optical power equally between the two branching line defects. Whereas, an important crisis in power splitter is that how light get efficiently transmitted via the bend corners. For that various methods have been proposed i. Providing row of pores with smaller diameter ii. Coupled cavity design and iii. Three pore–rows wide defect [2]. Although these techniques can significantly increase the splitting efficiency, complicated time–consuming computation is needed, consequently an alternate method is proposed to improve the power split ability by incorporating rectangular capsule shaped defect at its bends [4]. These defects with higher refractive index contrast provide better reflection as compared to that of other methods mentioned. Besides the main source of propagation losses in 2D PCW has been believed to be the guided modes position above the light line, since modes above the light line can easily ... • 10. The Role Of Self Assembly And The Construction Of A... A nanoparticle is the most basic component in the construction of a nanostructure. In general, the size of a nanoparticle spans the range between 1 and 100 nm. The properties of many conventional materials change when formed from nanoparticles. This is typically because nanoparticles have a greater surface area per weight than larger particles which causes them to be more reactive than other molecules. Self–assembly refers to the process by which nanoparticles or other distinct components spontaneously organize due to direct specific interactions and/or indirectly, through their environment. Self–assembly is typically linked with thermodynamic equilibrium, the organization of the structures characterized the minimum of the system's free energy. An important aspect of self–assembly is that the building blocks organize into macroscopic structures. This can happen through direct interactions (Interparticle forces) or through indirect interactions like using a template or external field as a guide. The grouping of matter in nanomaterials can be broken down into two techniques. Top–down miniaturization techniques or bottom–up methods which are typically based on self–assembly or directed assembly. The most widely used materials in bottom– up assembly are colloid micro– and nanoparticles. A lot of time and effort has recently been spent on the fabrication of functional materials from organized particles. These advanced assemblies can find applications in areas such as photonics, ... • 13. How Computing Is Creating Our Lives? What's the most fascinating shift that computing is creating in our lives? You might think it's just "smaller, better, faster," but there is an even more dramatic story about how computing is changing who we are as people and a society. Thanks to the wonders of technology, the idea of managing two distinct lives has become common for many of us. We have always had the first life–our physical existence, the one we can't escape until we die. But today many of us have also adapted a second life. We have long had the opportunity to invent ourselves through media, historically through writing. We could invent a newself. Yet our first lives remained dominant for most of us. But today this second life has grown with such scale and ubiquity that it now competes with our first life. We do this using all of the digital tools that keep us connected with people we don't actually connect with–using Facebook, e–mail, texting, Twitter, IM and the myriad of other digital media. We can deliberately create a unique version of our self in the digital world. What's profound is that this new self can take on an outsized importance and fidelity. Most of us know people in these digital worlds that we have never met. Yet we feel as if we know them and are connected to them. The balance between these two lives is rapidly shifting as technology offers ever–richer second life experiences. This increasing importance of our second lives is making computing even more central to us. Computing no longer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Investigating The Optical Performance Of Photonic Crystals abstract Photonic crystal is a composite dielectric with periodic modulation of refractive index that brings about unique photonic band–gap effect by which light could be totally reflected on the surface of such material regardless of any incident angle or mode. Such bandgap effect could be understood by investigating the optical performance of photonic crystals. In this paper, photonic bandgap calculations are performed for two dimensional photonic crystals using matlab. Plane wave expansion method is used to solve Maxwell's equations. The effect of lattice constant and refractive index is investigated. Introduction Photonic crystals are special class of optical media with periodic modulation of refractive index by arrangement of dielectric material. They respond to light waves over a desired range of frequencies by perfectly reflecting them or allowing them to propagate only in certain directions or confining them within a specified volume. Photons either propagate through this structure or they don 't. Frequencies that propagate are called modes, and groups of allowed modes form bands. Disallowed bands of frequencies are called photonic band gaps. This property of photonic bandgap is utilised to manipulate light propagation. In particular, we can design and construct photonic crystals with photonic band gaps, preventing light from propagating in certain directions with specified frequencies By transmitting signals with ... It is an uncomfortable feeling that signals your brain that there may be something wrong with your body. Pain is an irritating and unpleasant sensory and emotional experience which may be caused by a damage in the tissues, one 's beliefs or thoughts, or environmental stressors such as one 's job or traffic. Pain is a significant stress both physically and emotionally. It may cause discomfort, distress or agony. It may be steady or throbbing. It maybe stabbing, aching or pinching. In the past, many people thought that pain was a result of a damaged tissues. However now the researchers have come to find out that pain is an intricate process that might or might not include tissue damage and most likely involves social, psychological and emotional factors, which can either cause, increase, or decrease painful sensations. There are two types of pain, acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain is a short– lasting pain, which can be easily described and observed. Acute pain begins suddenly and is a sharp pain. It 's a warning of a disease or a threat to the body. Acute pain might be just mild and may last for a moment, or it may be severe and last for weeks or months. Acute pain does not last longer than 6 months. If the pain lasts longer than 6 months than it may proceed on to chronic pain. PhD in Nanostructures for Enhanced Solar Conversion Research Proposal Abstract The possibilities of employing a nanoscale metal topography that will employ surface plasmon excitation phenomena towards improving the light absorption efficiency of organic solar cells will be investigated. This goal is achievable by analytically designing and producing optically active nanostructures which are used to excite surface plasmons at the wavelengths range dictated by the sun in order to support the confinement of light beyond the diffraction limit, thus leading to high weighted enhancements over a wider range of the solar spectrum. This can be achieved by employing nanostructured materials with unique properties tailored for the materials characteristics of II–VI nanorod systems across the solar spectrum capable of creating significant enhancements while preventing unwanted thermal losses. Also external quantum efficiency measurements on the nanostructured cells will be made, this is expected to demonstrate a substantial photon absorption enhancement across the solar spectrum. • 22. Quantum Physics : Quantum Computing Quantum Computing Less than 100 years ago, beginnings of the "new quantum theory" began. Only about 55 years after the new quantum theory began to emerge the idea that quantum phenomena can be used to perform computations. The idea being for a quantum computer was that classical computers would take an extremely long time to perform huge calculations, when a simple quantum system perform these same calculations all the time. One property that quantum computers have been observed to have was the ability to solve exponential growth problems without using the exponential growth in the time taken to complete the computation. This observation represents a characteristic named quantum parallelism. When an input is submitted in a classical computer the same outcome will always be computed. For a quantum computer there will be many different outputs from just one single input submission. This is because the quantum computer will compute all possible outcomes for that input simultaneously. A quantum computer is similar to a computer, but uses the principles of quantum physics to increase the power of the system beyond what a traditional computer can compute. A traditional computer functions by storing data in a binary format, using "bits" that encode with either a 0 or a 1. On the other hand, a quantum computer will use quantum bits that will encode both the 0 and the 1. The main difference is the 0 and 1 will encode into two distinguishable quantum states. It also talks about how you could print a 3D model of a person's organ such as their brain or heart. This enables them to find defects in the organ. Also, it said that the next step up would be 3D printing artificial organs. One quote that stood out to me was "Because 3D printed designs can be unique and cool, things like prosthesis that used to be something to hide are now a fashion statement," said Sarah Boisvert, the chief 3D printing ... • 42. The Synthesis Of Semiconductor Devices The synthesis of semiconductor devices in microelectronics and photonics applications has always fascinated me, and the field of developing electronic and photonic solid–state devices is a field that I find continuously interesting and rewarding. The physics behind these devices and their manufacturing are consistently setting new limits or allowing for new methods that produce useful applications. By embracing and driving research, industries which rely on evolving electronic devices and methods enjoy a rapid pace of development. Because of this, we see photonic solutions proposed as an alternative to the more physical electronic devices. Moreover, we see approaches that integrate these worlds. My interest in these fields will require an extensive academic and research foundation regarding devices that rely heavily on quantum, electromagnetic and other phenomena. It will also require me to initially focus my efforts before exploring a breadth of other fields and applications that will become an integral part of my research repertoire. My academic interests and career objectives span both theoretical and practice–based branches of learning. I have seen how many factors in epitaxial growth of groups III and V semiconductor materials may render a great theoretical design difficult to realize. The challenges in solving and computing for several equations and in reaching a trade–off in designs also need to prove viability. This is only obtainable through a deep understanding ... The operating voltage of the laser can be determined by using the equation hv=E1–E2 Where h– Planck's constant v– Operating voltage E1–conduction band gap energy E2–valence band gap energy The receiver helps in converting the optical energy into electrical energy using the effect of photoelectric. A photodiode is generally the main component of a receiver. The components used in the receiver are: 1. Photodiode 2. Amplifiers. 3. Low pass filters The front end: Simulates a photodiode and preamplifier. The frequency response is specified by the filter transfer function. The equivalent input noise of the amplifier can be added to the Thermal Noise of the photodiode. These three helps us in forming the front end of the receiver. The back end of the receiver consists of: 1. Amplifier 2. Low pass filter 3. Inverter The back –end: Simulates the main amplifier and the channel filter of the receiver. The transfer function of the channel filter is specified in the Filtered module. Photodiode: The photodiode present at the receiver helps in converting the incident photons into electrons. Generally, the two most used photodiodes are the – Pin Photodiode – Avalanche Photodiode In a PIN Photodiode, electron hole pairs are generated due to the absorption of photons. The Avalanche Photodiode is very similar to the PIN diode, but the reverse bias voltage applied to this diode is very high. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
