A Modest Proposal On Satire
Satire is a specific classification of writing that occasionally makes utilization of realistic and
performing expressions with the aim of scorning society into self–change. With social criticism
being its fundamental objective, it uses dark sarcasm as its primary device to get the point across.
Satire impacts people to reconsider themselves so as to alter senseless thoughts and behaviors.
Different techniques are utilized in delivering the satirical impact, those of which use wit as their
primary weapon. These methodologies mix the acing of matching unimportant and authentic matters
as one joke, demonstrating compliment yet meaning the contrary to show ambiguity, and asking
rhetorical questions. Moreover, the creator may downplay an issue keeping in mind the end goal to
move the group of audience towards the genuine significance of the theme, antagonistically;
distortion is utilized to bring down the effect of an issue to its lesser quality. Aggregately, these
procedures are practiced to draw out the human follies and vices in society. In Molière 's Tartuffe
and Jonathan Swift 's article A Modest Proposal, both diagonally condemn and criticize human
conduct and the discernment we have towards others. Through a comedian conveyance, these
creators offer an understanding past the apparently self–evident, and expect to enhance this flawed
custom of one sidedness as opposed to disposing of it.
The key topic of Tartuffe is hypocrisy, as presented with the disposition of the

Clever Tom Clinch Going To Be Hanged
Comparing A London Fete and Clever Tom Clinch Going to be Hanged
This essay will contrast the two poems 'A London Fete' written by
Coventry Patmore and 'Clever Tom Clinch Going To Be Hanged' by
Jonathan Swift. Both of these poems are about the hangings in the 17th–18th century. A London
Fete was written in the 18th century, whereas Clever Tom
Clinch was written in the 17th century. This could have made a slight variation in what the poet had
written because of the time variation.
For instance nowadays we are more civilised because of the new laws have been brought in.
Although both of the poems were written about hangings, A London Fete was more persistent on the
crowd's behaviour and response rather than the condemned ... Show more content on

I think that the crowd reacted the way they did is because everything adapts to its environment. So
going back to the title it's showing that the crowd is having a tremendous time.
The title 'Clever Tom Clinch' is ironic because the word 'Clever' is used to describe Tom Clinch. In
reality I believe that Tom Clinch is attempting to be clever whereas if he were intelligent he would
have never been caught in the first place. 'His waistcoat and stockings and breeches were white' this
could have shown that he was witty because his garments were white which associates with an
angel. He considered that he could have swindled them into believing that he was innocent.
Jonathan Swift wrote the poem Clever Tom Clinch using swift and dexterous movements. He had
also used rhyming couplets throughout the poem. My opinion for why the poet decided to do this is
because when the reader is reading, he is reading in a continuous rhythm and flow.
This helps the reader to carry on reading. Clever Tom Clinch has been written in the form of a
ballad, which means that there is a narrator, which is telling you what is happening throughout the
poem. For instance, 'As Clever Tom Clinch, while the rabble was, rode stately through Holborn, to
die in his calling'. The poet is telling us that
Tom Clinch was going through Holborn, and that the

The Cuban Pimmingbird: Twimming Birds
This hummingbird is endemic to the entire Cuban archipelago
Description it has a mass around 1.6–2 g and a length 2.0–2.4. The male is slightly smaller than the
female. Compared to other small hummingbirds, which often have a slender appearance, the bee
hummingbird looks rounded
As the smallest bird in the world, it is no larger than a big insect and, as its name suggests, is
scarcely larger than a bee. Like all hummingbirds, it is a swift, strong flier.
The brilliant, iridescent colors of the bee hummingbird's feathers make the bird seem like a tiny
jewel. The iridescence is not always noticeable, but depends on the angle at which a person looks at
the bird.
Diet The bird's bill is made for probing deep into flowers. The bee hummingbird

Analysis Of Jonathan Swift 's ' Gulliver 's Travels '
How Jonathan Swift constructs and uses Gulliver in 'Gulliver's Travels'
Jonathan Swift was an English 18th century writer who supported the Monarchy and was a Royalist.
He wrote this story while in a club, called 'The Scriblerus Club', in which there were 2 other
members; Alexander Pope and John Arbuthnot. All three believed that the society they lived in was
corrupt. In this story, Swift indirectly describes the many different faults with man–kind. The story
is written in a satiristic style that makes fun of the bad things in society. Swift uses Gulliver to show
how corrupt and cruel the 18th century English society was.
Swift constructs Gulliver's character through his first person narrative style. His narratives reveal
that he is a rather unemotional character. This is shown when he describes and recounts dangerous
situations in a matter–of–fact and passive style. A clear example of this is when his ship was
destroyed in a storm and all of his companions were lost or dead; 'Twelve of our crew were dead'
and 'we therefore trusted ourselves to the mercy of the waves'. Swift is clearly using Gulliver to
represent many of the 18th century politicians who had a stiff upper–lip and were unemotional. He
is used to satirise 18th Century English society's stereotypical 'stiff–upper lip' approach in life, a
character trait which may also be a source of humour for the reader.
Swift carefully constructs Gulliver's character through his reactions to certain situations. He presents

Political Satire in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travel
Vision is the art of seeing things invisible.. –Jonathan Swift
Introduction
Born on November 30, 1667, Irish author, clergyman and satirist Jonathan Swift grew up fatherless.
Under the care of his uncle, he received a bachelor 's degree from Trinity College and then worked
as a statesman 's assistant. Eventually, he became dean of St. Patrick 's Cathedral in Dublin. Most of
his writings were published under pseudonyms. He best remembered for his 1726 book Gulliver 's
Travels.
While leading his congregation at St. Patrick 's, Swift began to write what would become his best–
known work. In 1726, at last finished with the manuscript, he traveled to London and benefited
from the help of several friends, who anonymously published it as Travels into Several Remote
Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of
Several Ships–also known, more simply, as Gulliver 's Travels. The book was an immediate success,
and hasn 't been out of print since its first run. Interestingly, much of the storyline points to historical
events that Swift had lived through years prior, during intense political turmoil. In 1742, Swift
suffered from a stroke and lost the ability to speak. On October 19, 1745, Jonathan Swift died. He
was laid to rest next to Esther Johnson inside Dublin 's St. Patrick 's Cathedral.

Using Satire in A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift
"A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift, is an essay that uses satire. Merriam–Webster defines satire
as: a way of using humor to show that someone or something is foolish, weak, bad, etc.: humor that
shows the weaknesses or bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc. "Satire may make the
reader laugh at, or feel disgust for, the person or thing satirized. Impishly or sardonically, it criticizes
someone or something, using wit and clever wording–and sometimes makes outrageous assertions
or claims" (Cummings, 2012). Swift, best know for "Gulliver's Travels", originally wrote this piece
as a pamphlet in 1729 under the full title "A Modest Proposal: For preventing the children of poor
people in Ireland, from being a burden on their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You are, after all, what you eat. He then goes on to explain the peak season for infant, obviously
nine months after Lent. The many ways it can be prepared, "stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled"
(Swift, 2013), and the useful things that can be done with the leftover skin. Knowing how soft a
babies skin is this should make for a fine pare of gloves.
Swift does not stop there; he offers up six key areas this will be helpful. First, reducing the number
of Catholics, a benefit for sure to any proper Protestant. Second, giving the meager some
significance. They are a burden to the whole of Ireland. Third, increasing the nations income, with
fewer mouths to feed, and a cash crop so abundantly sourced. Fourth, mothers would no longer have
to raise their children beyond one year. (A mothers dream) Fifth, introducing a new dish to the
markets for the culinary world to refine and charge as much as they see fit. Finally, it would gain
women the same level of respect as the farm animals when they are pregnant. Offering up reasons of
objection, Swift suggests that it may impact the population, and then retorts with, that was kind of
the idea. Cull the Irish heard and allow the English to continue thriving with little or no effort on
their part. He then explains how the infant flesh would not stand up to preservation to allow for the

Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
Society vs. Individuality In the novel Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, the influence that society
has on Gulliver is very detectable in this book. Throughout the novel, Gulliver repeatedly, finds
himself in predicaments because societal norms and the role of government in our society. Swift
shows how the idea of who people are due to their position in society. Gulliver is an outsider to the
society of Lilliput, he tries to fit into their world but fails, not only because of his size but because of
their governmental treason. I believe, Swift wrote the story of Liliput to try and illustrate to us the
idea that society and government corrupts individuals. This is shown by the relationships between
Gulliver and self–oriented individuals and society–oriented individuals. Swift demonstrates that the
government has questionable motives, in the Acts of Conduct that Gulliver has to learn it has in it
the description of basically what the King can and cannot do. The first rule they explain is "...the
obedience to the king out of terror rather than out of respect". The King shows the fear he instills in
his subjects by the phrase, "the Princes of the Earth shake their Knees" (25). The King also tries to
rule the heavens and the Earth, "whose Feet press down to the Center, and whose Head strikes
against the sun" (25). Even though the king is within his rule, the reader will find the King's
methods harsh. Swift is implying that for men to have control over their government or

A Good Fat Child
With one hundred twenty thousand Irish children out of the population being set aside for dinner, the
solution will also help to resolve the issues of overpopulation and unemployment in Ireland, giving
the Irish economy a much needed boost, while making it easier for England to deal with its unruly
Irish subjects. Swift uses this outrageous concept of selling children as food to deliver a message.
One of the most impacting satirical methods Swift utilizes is the statistical analysis he provides in an
effort to enhance his satire. Swift goes on to offer statistical support for his proposal and specific
data about the number of children to be sold, their weight and price– "I have reckoned upon a
medium that a child just born will weigh twelve pounds, and a solar year if tolerably nursed
increaseth to twenty–eight pounds... nursing a beggar's ... be about two shillings per annum, rags
included; and I believe no gentleman would repine to give ten shillings for the carcass of a good fat
child, which, as I have said, will make four dishes of excellent nutritive meat... the mother will have
eight shillings net profit, and be fit for work till she produces another child" ( Swift 7–8). He even
suggests some recipes for preparing this delicious new meat, reasoning that, with innovative cooks
generating ever more and delicious new dishes, it will expand and improve the culinary experience
of the wealthy, resulting in a healthier and happier population as a whole.

The Use Of Primitive Tasers On The United States Of America
Most of us are familiar with the distinctive ticking of a TASER. TASERs, used by police
departments throughout the United States of America, have become a go to tool for apprehending
suspects without fatally wounding them. The first use of primitive TASERs dates back to 1960 and
they have come a long way since. Such as advancements such as upgrading from gunpowder to
compressed air, to more computerised TASERs that automatically cut off and collect crucial user
data. With the advancement of technology, TASERs quickly became a more viable tool for an
officer 's duty belt.
In the 1960's law enforcement officers faced a multitude of protests from civil rights activists and

In 1974 Jack began his work on his idea drawing inspiration from a book called "Tom Swift and his
Electric Rifle. He first created a device that look like a flashlight. The device used gunpowder to fire
two prongs attached to wire up to 15 feet. Once the prongs made contact the device pulsed 50,000
volts into the target causing uncontrollable muscle spasms and effectively immobilizing the target
without killing. He came up with the name TSR, an acronym for the book in which he got his ideas
from, for his invention. Later he would add an "a", making it the well known name today TASER, to
the name because he grew tired of saying the letters when talking about his invention.
After filing for a patent on his device Jack tried to start selling his new invention. However, the
United States government quickly classified his invention as a firearm because of the use of
gunpowder. This classification severely hindered his sales but he managed to sell to the Los Angeles
Police Department. When efforts to use the device to subdue Rodney King in 1991 failed Patrick
Smith teamed up with Jack to help improve the device. One of the major improvements was
replacing the gunpowder used to propel the prongs with compressed air. Without gunpowder in the
device the classification of firearm was dropped, making selling the device much easier. This caused

A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift
Satire in "A Modest Proposal" and Different Articles Jonathan Swift, author of "A Modest
Proposal," tries to present different ideas in order to change the situation of Ireland. Through his
proposal, he is able to get people's attention, and the way he uses satire throughout the article made
his argument more successful. He wrote this essay to show how ignored and bad the state of Ireland
and its social classes are. In "A Modest Proposal", Swift effectively uses rhetorical exaggeration to
express his offense towards England's politicians, and the status of the poor people in the country in
the late seventeenth century. His purpose was to raise awareness of what was taking place in that
society. Swift expresses his growing annoyance towards the inability of the politicians, the
hypocrisy of the rich, the brutality of the English, and the degrading situations in which the Irish
people were living in. Swift was trying to persuade the people by proposing this extreme and
unusual way for the purpose of provoking them to come up with the right solutions. On the other

The Satirical Transformation Of Gulliver Essay
The Satirical Transformation of Gulliver
Swift's Gulliver's Travels is difficult to come to terms with for a multitude of reasons. The most
immediate problem is that of genre. How may Gulliver's Travels be categorized? It's a fiction; it's
written in prose; it's a children's tale; it's a comedy; it's a tragedy; however, to say this is to say very
little. Clearly it's satirical, but that is not to say it's a satire. Arther E. Case, for example, thinks that
it's not a satire: "it would be more accurate and more illuminating to call it a politico–sociological
treatise much of which is couched in the medium of satire" (Four Essays on Gulliver's Travels p.
105). In response to Case's classification, I offer a question: what's the purpose of formal
specification if there are numerous imprecise labels to which this work may conform? Swift's
masterpiece should be entitled to its own donnée; thus, for the sake of this essay, I will shy from all
comprehensive forms of categorization. Instead, I'll consider Gulliver's Travels on its own terms, sui
generis, to interpret its unique presuppositions, many of which are expressed satirically. By allowing
Gulliver, an uncritical lover of man, to become a hypercritical hater of man, Swift has it both ways:
Gulliver functions as both the object and instrument of satire (Four Essays on Gulliver's Travels
106).
Perhaps one could reduce Gulliver's voyage to the country of the Houyhnhnms by describing it as a
carefully devised fable; however, this

Harsh But Solutions Decisions In Ireland
According to Sparknotes, In the 1700's, Ireland went through an economic depression as well as
other problems in the country such as starvation, overpopulation and intolerable taxation by
England. The families in Ireland could not afford to maintain their children therefore the children
became a burden. Politicians did nothing to improve Ireland's situation. These ongoing Problems in
Ireland led Jonathan Swift to write," A Modest Proposal." In his essay, Swift uses satire to give
rational but extreme solutions to Ireland's issues. Swift institutes the practice of cannibalism of
children in his essay to address the issue of starvation, economic depression and overpopulation. In
"A Modest Proposal," Swift says,"... The remaining hundred thousand may, at a year old, be offered
in sale to the persons of quality and fortune, through the kingdom, always advising the mother to let
them suck plentifully in the last month, so as to render them plump, and fat for a good table." In this
quote, Swift solves three of Ireland 's problems by his proposed plan of cannibalism. Mothers would
raise their children to a year old at little to no cost, then the child would be sold to a wealthier family
for consumption. This idea gives the family income from selling their child, it gives the buyer a food
supply, and it lessens the population of children begging on the streets. Swift's satirical solutions are
far too extreme in the sacrifice needed and in the

How Does One Define Progress?
How does one define progress? The idea of progress has always been of central interest to human
beings, but our society has overused the word so much that its definition has fallen into obscurity.
Some define it as the pursuit of wellbeing; others imply that it is simply a manner through which
one can quantify one's priorities in life. To many people in the 18th century, progress took on this
same notion of improvement and advancement. However, satirist writers Jonathan Swift (1667 –
1745), Alexander Pope (1688 – 1744), and William Hogarth (1697 – 1764) undermined the notion
of progress in their works in order to represent their general disenchantment with humanity. Their
prose, poetry, and print works respectively condemn the society of the spectacle that begins to
emerge in the 18th century. Ultimately, their satire attacks the actions and interests of Great Britain
in a time of purported intellectual improvement.
With the publishing of Robinson Crusoe in 1719, the travel novel surfaced as an increasingly
popular literary form in Great Britain. This was due to the fact that travel implies going abroad and
experiencing new opportunities in addition to serving as a representation of the popular imperialist
mindset of the 18th century. Jonathan Swift, ever a fervent observer of society, molded Gulliver's
Travels as a parody of travel literature in order to challenge the nation's use of travel as a vehicle of
progress. Typically, the assumption is that travel provides a sense

Satire In Huckleberry Finn
Devices like mockery, irony, parody, and sarcasm make the use of satire effective . Satirists typically
use these devices when hoping to expose, or even humiliate an individual or a society. Writers also
use satire when creating social change as well as preventing it. Well known satirists include Mark
Twain, Jonathan swift, and many other extarident authors. Every satirists uses different methods or
devices to get their point across and effectively at that . Satirists use many different methods and
devices like mockery, mock–heroic, and others to use satire effectively and gain an audience's
attention.
Irony is when you say one thing, yet mean another. This is a very popular device that writers use
when creating satire and often used when exploring more momentous topics. Popular writer Mark
Twain who is well–known for his effective use of satire often uses irony in his very prevailing yet
controversial novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In this historic novel Mark Twain uses
irony to mock slavery and the society surrounding it. An example from the novel is when Huck
throws salt over his left shoulder in the hopes to ward off back luck. This is ironic because
previously to Huck throwing salt over his shoulder he was mocking Tom Sawyer for his ridiculous
beliefs yet he believes throwing salt will get rid of any bad mojo. Twain's use of irony not only is
criticizing Huck for that but also the whole society during this time, many individuals in this novel
have controversial beliefs and somewhat go against their own. Jonathan Swift a very famous satirist
and essayist exceedingly known for "Gulliver's Travels" and " A Modest Proposal" also uses irony
along with Mark Twain. Irony permeates through Swifts legendary essay " A Modest Proposal".
This essay has to do with overpopulation in Ireland and in Jonathan Swift words " For preventing
the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for
making them beneficial to the publick.". Swift mocks this idea and completely blows it out of
proportion by basically saying let's fatten these children up, eat the children, or we could just put
them on the market. Although Swift has amazing examples of irony throughout his

We often see satire in our everyday lives such as on televisions, novels, and music; but why is satire
used? Satire is a form of writing used to denounce human vice, giving readers an insight on the
flaws that the author sees in society. There are two different types of way to present satire: horation
and juvenialian. In the three works: Candide by Voltaire, Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes, and
A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift all demonstrate the use of satire. However, Don Quixote
presents only horation satire and A Modest Proposal uses juvenalian satire, while Candide uses both
types of satire. By combining both horatian and juvenilian satire one's piece is able to present social
criticism more effectively than only using one. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author uses horation to point out the lack of respect towards prostitutes, although they have a
lewd job, they should be treated as ladies. In turn, Don Quixote is once again made a dunce for his
actions, conveying instead that kind actions are wasteful and will only make one look half–witted. A
Modest Proposal on the other hand, used juvenalian satire which was too serious to fully grasp the
idea Jonathan Swift wanted to show to the readers. Juvenalian satire, quite the opposite of horation,
is a specific attack on a individual or human behavior. Swift addresses the solution to the poverty in
Ireland in a manner so blunt he sounds somewhat serious about "a young healthy child...stewed,
roasted, baked, or boiled" Swift targets his attack on the Irish and exaggerates how far the Irish
would go for money (2030). A reader, may not notice that this human characteristic, greed, applies
to all mankind. Swift in other cases offends the British as well. Swift suggests his proposition so
wildly for the British will accept it. However, this only gives insight to readers that the British are
self–inovlved when in fact it

Introduction
In1726, Jonathan Swift, one of the best–known realistic writers in 18th century, published his book
Gulliver's Travels which on the surface is a collection of travel journals of a surgeon called Lemuel
Gulliver but actually is a work of satire on politics and human nature. In the four incredible
adventures, Gulliver's perceptions are tied closely with Swift's shame and disgust against British
government and even against the whole of the human condition as Richard Rodino says in his book
that Gulliver is neither a fully developed character nor even an altogether distinguishable persona;
rather, he is a satiric device enabling Swift to score satirical points. (Rodino 124) ... Show more

Degeneration of Humanity
Swift considers human are not only evil in nature but keep corrupting. The European moralists say:
"the nature is degenerated in these latter declining ages of the world, and could now produce only
small abortive births in comparison of those ancient times" (Swift 187) In Glubbdubdrib, people can

person called up made exactly the same appearance he had done in the world, it gave me
melancholy reflections to observe how much the race of mankind was degenerated among us, within
those hundred years past", "how all these pure native virtues were prostituded for a piece of money
by their grandchildren" (Swift 271) Gulliver is thrown into deep melancholy as he discover the
degeneration of human nature. Not only the ancient virtues are lost, but also man's physical
condition is becoming worse and worse as Swift points out in Gulliver's fourth voyage to the land of
the Houyhnhnms where his satire reaches its pinnacle: "I seemed to fail in strength and agility", "He
said I differed indeed from other Yahoos, being much more cleanly, and not altogether so deformed,
but in point of real advantage he thought I differed for the worse." (Swift 322) human's disposition

Nesting: A Brief History Of Hummingbirds
Centuries ago, their plumage was used to adorn Native American ceremonial costumes. Even today,
some people believe that the hummingbird's glittering plumage contains mythical powers. However,
most of us merely enjoy watching these sparkling gems of the bird world.
Hummingbirds live only in the Americas and three species occur in Florida. The ruby–throated
hummingbird is by far the most common hummer in our state. This feathered jewel is about 3 inches
long and weighs as little as a penny (¼ ounce). Its name describes the most brilliant part of the
mature male's plumage. The throat feathers contain air bubbles that give off an iridescent red tone in
full light. Their backs are metallic green, and they have green and black tail feathers. As a
Neotropical migrant, the ruby–throat's range extends from Canada to central Florida, with most
wintering in Mexico and South America. They are arriving this month in northeast Florida. ... Show

Swift and Blake's Use of Irony and Persona In Satire
In the context of political questions and social activism, irony, exaggeration, humor, and ridicule are
all valuable rhetorical tools to expose faults and make a point (New Oxford American Dictionary).
Both Jonathan Swift and William Blake confront social systems of oppression in their literary
careers, most notably with A Modest Proposal and Songs of Innocence respectively. Swift's A
Modest Proposal is an address to the wealthy English and appeal to the consumerism that drives
economic exploitation that causes inequity and poverty. Due to the tense political climate and
potential ramifications of his criticism, Swift published the essay anonymously and therefore had to
create a persona within the essay to speak for him. Swift uses this unique narrative persona to
ironically confront this oppressor class. Blake also makes rhetorical use of the persona and irony to
make ideological points but in a noticeably different way; the speaker he creates uses the voice of
those being exploited by English social systems rather than a privileged observer. In his poem "The
Chimney Sweeper," Blake adopts the voice of a young boy sold into labor. His discussion of
mistreatment is more psychological in nature, and contains a complexity considerably absent in
Swift's writing. Each perspective has its merits, but which is the more effective means of satire?
In his opening, Swift's speaker misleads readers

The Anna's hummingbird (Calypte Anna) is a green and grey ball of feathers with the agility of a
fighter pilot. They can hover, fly backwards, and even upside down for a short time. They are a
medium sized species with the males sporting an iridescent ruby red throat patch and the females
sport a lovely iridescent green and grey. They are stocky for a hummingbird, and are better suited
for Northern climates. They range from western North America to Baja California, from the
southern tip of Alaska to southern California. The males can even sing, but it sounds more like
high–pitched little squeaks and screeches. They are most often found in forests, backyards, fields,

If a bird returns to the same area every year and expects to find food, it would really have a hard
time if all of a sudden its field of wildflowers became a new housing development. Migration is
energy intensive and exhausting, the bird might not be able to find food before it simply runs out of
fuel and perishes in its sleep. With pesticides and round–ups being sprayed in ever higher
concentrations on wildflowers and weeds, more of it is entering the systems of these hummingbirds.
Not only are the flowers being effected, but the small insects the hummer preys on as well. They

other predators such as hawks pose threats to the hummers while they are distracted during feeding,

The hummingbird is one of the most unique animals on our planet. They are equipped with freaky
flying abilities and fantastically fast traits, all which make them the distinct animals that they are.
How everyday can be a struggle for these nectar consuming flyers just puts me in awe.
Hummingbirds have multiple special characteristics that help them to survive in the wilderness.
Hummingbirds have a heart rate of 1,200 bpm when flying, and take about 250 breaths per minute.
Hummingbirds can beat their wings up to 200 times per second, which, as you may have guessed,
takes up a lot of energy. This helps them to move forwards, backwards, hover, and even move
upside down. Hummingbirds spend most of their days gathering nectar to use as energy. These
frequent flyers are also quite small and light. The smallest hummingbird, the Bee Hummingbird, is
only 5 cm in length while the largest hummingbird, the Giant Hummingbird, is 20 cm in length.
Most hummingbirds weigh less than a nickel. This helps them move around quickly and efficiently,
and also helps them to gather nectar from small flowers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For starters, hummingbirds are surprisingly intelligent for their minuscule size. Hummingbirds have
the largest percentage of brain size to body size of all the species of birds at 4.2%. They can also
remember which flowers they have visited and how long it takes a flower to refill. It takes

Comparing The Great Gatsby 'And Blank Space' By Taylor Swift

The Idea Of The Absurd
M a r t i n e z | 1
Definition of Absurdism ab·surd·ism /əbˈsərdˌizəm,–ˈzərd–/ noun 1. The belief that human beings
exist in a purposeless, chaotic universe.
The idea of the absurd is seen in many existentialist works, particularly in the works of Albert
Camus. Absurdity is the notion of contrast between two things. As Camus defines it in The Myth of
Sisyphus:
The absurd is born out of this confrontation between the human need and the unreasonable silence
of the world
This view, which is shared by fellow French philosopher Jean–Paul Sartre, is that humanity must
live in a world that is and will forever be hostile or indifferent towards them. The universe will
never truly care for humanity the way we seem to want it to. The atheist view of this statement is
that people create stories, or gods, which in their minds transcend reality to fill this void and attempt
to satisfy their need.
Now Let's Begin...
... In many works of art there are many emphasizes of the absurdity of an individual's existence
while there are, at the same time, many things encouraging that idea that life's meaning is from what
the individual makes of it. Through this, a person may feel a stronger sense of

what they see as wrong is usually counteractive to what they think is the problem in the first place.

Jonathan Swift 's A Modest Proposal
Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal is a satirical essay that sardonically uses an outrageous solution
to the massive poverty in Ireland. He proposes this lengthy idea of eating children as the solution to
the society's problems. His serious yet hyperbolic and satirical style allows Swift an approach to get
people engaged in the difficulties the Irish had to do to survive their everyday life. This essay
explores Swift's ability to use literary devices and how these techniques advance his idea about the
lack of morale by asking: How and to what extent does Jonathan Swift use satire to highlight the
heartless attitudes of society towards the poor Irish families in A Modest Proposal?
The scope of the essay is limited to the work done by Jonathan Swift, A Modest Proposal, a literary
criticism, an online literary glossary, as well as two more sources on Ireland's historical events. The
essay concludes that Swift effectively uses insincerity, irony, and rhetorical exaggeration to reveal
his annoyance of politicians, papists, and overall citizens of poverty–stricken Ireland in the late
seventeenth century. Jonathan Swift states that the people, politicians, and English were all to be at
fault for the terrible state and poverty of Ireland, making it clear that the main target of the essay is
not the condition of Ireland, but rather the can–do spirit of the times that led people to devise a
number of illogical schemes that would purportedly solve social and economic problems.

Gulliver 's Travels By Jonathan Swift
A Humbling Inspiration In 1726 author Jonathan Swift published a satirical, narrative entitled
Gulliver's Travels (Davis, Harrison and Johnson 229). Gulliver's Travels is a novel that has
continued to contribute and thrive in both literature and the film genres. Swift uses comical events
and extraordinary characters to address moral issues that remain decades later in today's society.
Gulliver's Travels has since been reproduced in the film industry multiple times, most recently in
2010 (Gulliver 's Travels). Swift's creative work takes his prideful main character and protagonist,
Lemuel Gulliver through many events which leads to his most traumatizing and humbling
experience. A minor characters within the text, Don Pedro de Mendez is one of the most influential
characters that impacts Gulliver's traveling experience. Don Pedro de Mendez is a character that
helps uplift Gulliver from mild depression and encourages him to embrace who he is while
remaining thoughtful of his shortcomings. Don Pedro de Mendez as a minor character contributes to
both Gulliver's life and the theme of the text. Mendez is a Portuguese captain who discoveries
Gulliver on an island after his exile by the Houyhnhnm tribe. During Gulliver's and Mendez's
interactions the readers are introduced to the moral concept of humbleness and how pride can affect
one's perception. Gulliver's exile from the island of the Houyhnhnm tribe and Yahoos causes him to

Sometimes a war is entered upon, because the enemy is too strong, and sometimes because he is too

and we will both fight, til they take ours or give us theirs. It is a very justifiable cause of war to

problem raised in "On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner Is the amount of wealth spent by
consumers, and the effect of that. Consumers spend too much money and waste even more when
they throw food and clothing away. In the essay he explains the way of life as an scavenger and how
to demonstrate how people are able to live by the minimal resources although most consumers
continue to buy things they do not need and continue to waste resources that may be valuable to
others. Aside from food, he additionally describes the emotional impact that living out of a dumpster
can have on a person. He describes finding sad things such as "abandoned teddy bears, shredded
wedding books, and pets lying in state." Seeing the pets makes him think about his dog Lizbeth and
how she is likely to end up with a dumpster as her final resting place, as Eighner does not see
himself having a place for her before she passes on. Rummaging causes Eighner to consider how
much individuals underestimate, including the way that they can purchase something new to replace
something old that they have discarded. He feels frustrated because of the individuals who don 't
have that extravagance. B) "Our Wall" by Charles Bowden speaks of a very well known

Not Many People Can Write A Proposal Consisting Of Three
Not many people can write a proposal consisting of three thousand three hundred and seventy–six
words in which political and economic issues are discussed and given a solution in such a serious
yet sarcastic tone, but this is exactly what Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal does. Swift was born
in Dublin, Ireland to British parents and as result of this, he yearned to get as far away as he could
from the Irish. After he was ordained into the Church of Ireland in 1964, he was exposed to the lives
of the poor population. He could not have guessed that in a few years, he would write one of the
most political satire pieces in history. A Modest Proposal is so iconic because of its unique tone, the

Swift proposes that "instead of being a charge upon their parents, or the parish, or wanting food and
raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall...contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing of
many thousands (Schilb & Clifford, 2014, p. 64)." According to the research done by Dr. Jonathan
Swift, children deplete resources and money like a sponge absorbs water once they are two years
old. As a result, the infants should be fattened up during their first year in this world and then sold
for profit. Swift's plan kills two birds with one stone. Overpopulation will be an issue no longer, and
by selling the children to the upper class, Ireland's economy will be booming. The structure of this
argument is so compelling that many readers automatically agree with the mass slaughter of
thousands of innocent children. If the author had not used such an authoritative tone full of
conviction, the reader would have automatically disregarded the immoral proposition to open a
market for the consumption of children. Throughout his proposal, Swift included an abundance of
satire, which becomes blatantly obvious once the mirage of an informative solution fades. In
conclusion, A Modest Proposal presented readers with a far–fetched idea comprised of nonexistent
statistics delivered in a convincing, authoritative tone that made the slaughter of thousands of
innocent infants

son's birth. At the age of three, Swift was raised by his late father's family.
He attended Kilkenny Grammar School with fellow student William Congreve, who would later
become a dramatist. From there, Swift moved on to attend Trinity College in Dublin and Hart Hall
in Oxford. Swift would acquire his MA from both school in a span of six years (Mossner). In 1698,
Swift moved to England to be Sir William Temple's secretary at Moor Park in Surrey. At Moor Park,
Swift met a young, nine year old girl name Esther Johnson. He called her "Stella". Swift started off
as Stella's tutor, and they would become "lifelong" friends. Some people have been led to believe
that in 1716, Jonathan Swift and Stella Johnson were married; however, there is no evidence to
prove such accusations. Swift left Temple's aid in 1694 but shortly returned two years later. In the
two years that he was away from Moor Park, Swift was part of the "Anglican division of the Irish
church" in Dublin (Dewald). Upon his return in 1696 a new path for his future was soon to be
discovered. Swift started as an editor of Temple 's letters and then began to write his first works.
Both works, The Tale of a Tub and The Battle of the Books, were eventually published in 1704

Irony in Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal
Rhetorical strategies are techniques, which are used to make one's writings more effective. The
choice of rhetoric strategy depends on the type of subject being discussed. The effectiveness of
appropriate strategy is directly related to the mood, which is to be created and maintained. For
example if someone is criticizing the government, the tome is usually kept serious and Irony and
satire are widely used in such writings. On the other hand while describing the recent developments
in genetic engineering, the tone would be objective and humor or satire would be ineffective here.
Jonathan Swift was famous for his sarcastic remarks on the government of his days and his works

But I am not in the least pain upon that matter, because it is very well known that they are every day

Swift was not the only one who applied the technique of irony to convey his message more
effectively, there were several other people who from time to time have made use of satire with
irony to comment on or oppose to certain views and ideas. Martin Luther King Jr. was the champion
of human rights who spoke extensively for the rights of African–Americans. He became an icon for
the black community because of his highly emotional speeches and his writings, which focused on
the subject of equal rights for black men and women in the United States.
His "Letters from the Birmingham jail" are valued for their emotional content and their comments
on his own activities. These letters cannot exactly be termed satirical or ironical in tone. In fact
compared to Swift's works, King's letters would probably appear polite. But there are certain
portions where he has used irony very effectively for example in his response to clergymen who had
criticized King's activities, he said in his letter, "While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I
came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I

subject, cannibalism. This helps draw attention to the seriousness of the problem. Swift also
provides statistics, which helps further draw attention to the problem. Some techniques he uses are
parody and exaggeration. He uses exaggeration to get his point across and he uses parody to mock
the situation. An example of his effective use of satire is, "I have already computed the charge of
nursing a beggar's child (in which list I reckon all cottagers, labourers, and four–fifths of the
farmers) to be about two shillings per annum, rags included; and I believe no gentleman would
repine to give ten shillings for the carcass of a good fat child, which, as I have said, will make four
dishes of excellent nutritive meat, when he hath only some particular friend, or his own family to
dine with him. Thus the squire will learn to be a good landlord, and grow popular among his

Analysis Of The Article ' A Modest Proposal '
The article "A Modest Proposal" is a proposal made by a man named Jonathan Swift who is also
known for Gulliver's Travels which is another well spoken essay of satire. When the people of
Dublin are suffering from poverty and overpopulation, Swift writes up a satirical hyperbole that
mocks the heartless Irish attitudes towards the poor. The bottleneck effect of people was so dreadful
that all the Catholic families of Dublin were not able to support their own children. Due to these
conditions Swift writes this proposal to end the kingdom's issues in a serious but derisive way. All of
his solutions tend to be ethically wrong, but he backs up his solutions with statistical facts. Swift's
proposal is a satire made to jolt the people of Dublin, Ireland into understanding the growing issues
the kingdom faces with poverty and overpopulation. Swift's method of choice for a long term
elucidation is to turn the Dubliner's problems into their own solution. The proposal consists of
feeding the fattened up children of the poor and selling them to the rich citizens of the kingdom as
food. Swift states that doing this will help relieve families from paying for expensive children,
decrease overpopulation, add culinary values, increase employment, and will overall add to the
economic status of the kingdom. Swift concludes his proposal saying that it is in his greatest interest
that his proposal does not take effect, and that his only motives are improving the public good of his

political, and philosophical issues of their time and age. The two works I am referring to are
Jonathan Swift's satirical essay, A Modest Proposal, and Voltaire's novella, Candide, or Optimism. In
both A Modest Proposal and Candide, there is a portrayal of irony, cold logic and reasoning rather
than emotion, and misguided philosophy. Exploring the issues within these texts can implement a
better understanding of not only the literature itself, but also the historical context and the issues of

This can also be seen when Pangloss churns out philosophical discourse rather than obtaining the oil

answered Pangloss. 'The city of Lima, in America, experienced the same convulsions last year; the
same cause, the same effects; there is certainly a train of sulphur under ground from Lima to
Lisbon.' 'Nothing more probable,' said Candide; 'but for the love of God a little oil and wine.' 'How,
probable?' replied the philosopher. 'I maintain that the point is capable of being demonstrated.'
Candide fainted away, and Pangloss fetched him some water from a neighbouring fountain." On the
other hand, the speaker in A Modest Proposal has immaculate knowledge of his country's financial
situation, overpopulation, and famine. He demonstrates this knowledge through careful calculations
of how to handle the proposal that he is making. However, there is no use of emotion or empathy in
making these calculations "computations;" there is no thought of the moral implications of this
proposal and the fact that this can be considered mass genocide based on social class. Rather, the

Swift even goes far enough to determine the cost incurred by parents in bearing and rearing such
children till one year of age and the profit they can make on the sale. Here, in the veil of heavy
sarcasm Swift addresses another ill of the Irish society, that being ill treatment and physical assault
by men of their wives. Swift claims here that if the husband knows that "kicking" the wife would
potentially harm the child that can be sold for money in the market he will treat his wife more
affectionately as she is about to generate income for the family. The leering rhetorical challenge of
this satirical essay is capturing the attention of an audience who has appeared indifferent and
desensitized at many occasions, this shocking appeal immediately captures their attention. From the
starting logos appeal the appeal later in the passage becomes more ethos based as it challenges the
morality of the society. The writer appeals to the ethos of the audience by claiming himself as
honest time and time again and stating overtly that he has no personal interest as he has no minor
children. Swift gives the impression that all the passage comes straight from the heart due to
compassion for the Irish population and the concern for their well–being. By doing this, Swift
becomes practically successful in the eyes of the audience as it portrays him as the champion of the
poor, destitute and oppressed and a hero of the Irish people. Swift also here distances himself from

One of these adaptations is migration. Many species of hummingbirds head north in the warmer

climate. Unlike birds like geese, the hummingbird migrates on its own. Scientists think they may do
this to make themselves less noticeable to predators. Hummingbirds also have the largest brain in
relation to its body size amongst all birds. This allows them to remember any place they have feed.

Gulliver´s Travels by Jonathan Swift: Biographical Summary
Gulliver's Travels – Jonathan Swift – Biographical Summary Jonathan Swift was born on November
30, 1667 in Ireland to English parents, Jonathan and Abigail. His father, Jonathan, died shortly after
his birth, leaving his mother to raise him and his sister alone. In Ireland, Swift was dependent on a
nanny for three years because his mother moved to England. The young man was educated because
of the patronage of his Uncle, Godwin Swift. Godwin sent him to Kilkenny Grammar School at age
six, which was one of the best primary schools in Ireland at the time. Although the transition from
extreme poverty to a private school education was hard, he made it easier by becoming friends with
William Congreve, a future poet. Godwin paid for Jonathan, at age fourteen, to attend Trinity
College at Dublin where he completed his Bachelors Degree. Swift later completed his M. A. at
Oxford in 1692. "In 1701 Swift was awarded a D. D. from Dublin University", which is one notable
award that Swift received during his career (Cody). Swift's mother, in an effort to help Jonathan
become successful, sent him to work as a secretary under Sir William Temple, an established
essayist and graduate from Cambridge. Because Temple was a prominent parliamentary figure,
Swift was exposed to a great deal of literature during this time period (1689–1699), which helped
shape his books later on. While working under Sir William Temple, Swift lived in Moor Park,

What Is The Mood Of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon?
"Time is gone the song is over", now what? In life humanity craves more time. Time is the one
fixation we cannot get enough of. Since humanity is required to age, time seems to slip away. We
don't comprehend how time is synthesized. Society knows it goes on forever, regardless of what
happens in life. Pink Floyd's album, Dark Side Of The Moon, had immense success. It was recorded
in the summer of 1972 on Capital records. The song Time was written by Roger Waters and
recorded in the progressive era of rock and roll. The song is important because it demonstrates how
people don't realize that time slips away. The song displays this by means of engineering,
instruments, lyrics, and arrangement. Therefore, taking us into how this song fits the historical
context of the progressive era of rock and roll.
The song Time had aesthetic engineering that sets the mood of time ticking away. The band
consisted of David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason. At first glance Pink

A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift
"A modest proposal" by Jonathan Swift is an essay, which was written to elaborate the poverty of
people in Ireland. Where poor viewed as having an absence of worth in the public eye, playing no
essential part in more noteworthy else 's benefit of the people. Swift uses situational irony in this
essay which also represented a work of satire. By definition situational irony happens when the final
outcome is opposing to what was expected. Basically his proposal was for poor children roaming
around the streets. This proposal would protect these poor children from future inequality and being
burden on their parents. In this essay situational and verbal occurs due to the economic crisis in
Ireland during 1700s.
Having looked at the title, "The Modest Proposal", which is ironic itself because the word "modest"
means to be fair or acceptable, but people did not felt fair or accepting this proposal. The economy
was not stable in Ireland during 1700s; large amount of people went into poverty, hence Swift came
up with a proposal. This was for poor children who were seen as burden on their parents. Here swift
suggests that Ireland's overpopulation problem has redefined the physical landscape of the country.
In other words, that Ireland has become very populated, which is affecting the country's physical
appearance in terms of agriculture. It's ironic that restrictions on agriculture prevent the land from
being develop, while landowners are neglecting their responsibilities on daily

A Modest Proposal On Satire

  • 1. A Modest Proposal On Satire Satire is a specific classification of writing that occasionally makes utilization of realistic and performing expressions with the aim of scorning society into self–change. With social criticism being its fundamental objective, it uses dark sarcasm as its primary device to get the point across. Satire impacts people to reconsider themselves so as to alter senseless thoughts and behaviors. Different techniques are utilized in delivering the satirical impact, those of which use wit as their primary weapon. These methodologies mix the acing of matching unimportant and authentic matters as one joke, demonstrating compliment yet meaning the contrary to show ambiguity, and asking rhetorical questions. Moreover, the creator may downplay an issue keeping in mind the end goal to move the group of audience towards the genuine significance of the theme, antagonistically; distortion is utilized to bring down the effect of an issue to its lesser quality. Aggregately, these procedures are practiced to draw out the human follies and vices in society. In Molière 's Tartuffe and Jonathan Swift 's article A Modest Proposal, both diagonally condemn and criticize human conduct and the discernment we have towards others. Through a comedian conveyance, these creators offer an understanding past the apparently self–evident, and expect to enhance this flawed custom of one sidedness as opposed to disposing of it. The key topic of Tartuffe is hypocrisy, as presented with the disposition of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Clever Tom Clinch Going To Be Hanged Comparing A London Fete and Clever Tom Clinch Going to be Hanged This essay will contrast the two poems 'A London Fete' written by Coventry Patmore and 'Clever Tom Clinch Going To Be Hanged' by Jonathan Swift. Both of these poems are about the hangings in the 17th–18th century. A London Fete was written in the 18th century, whereas Clever Tom Clinch was written in the 17th century. This could have made a slight variation in what the poet had written because of the time variation. For instance nowadays we are more civilised because of the new laws have been brought in. Although both of the poems were written about hangings, A London Fete was more persistent on the crowd's behaviour and response rather than the condemned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think that the crowd reacted the way they did is because everything adapts to its environment. So going back to the title it's showing that the crowd is having a tremendous time. The title 'Clever Tom Clinch' is ironic because the word 'Clever' is used to describe Tom Clinch. In reality I believe that Tom Clinch is attempting to be clever whereas if he were intelligent he would have never been caught in the first place. 'His waistcoat and stockings and breeches were white' this could have shown that he was witty because his garments were white which associates with an angel. He considered that he could have swindled them into believing that he was innocent. Jonathan Swift wrote the poem Clever Tom Clinch using swift and dexterous movements. He had also used rhyming couplets throughout the poem. My opinion for why the poet decided to do this is because when the reader is reading, he is reading in a continuous rhythm and flow. This helps the reader to carry on reading. Clever Tom Clinch has been written in the form of a ballad, which means that there is a narrator, which is telling you what is happening throughout the poem. For instance, 'As Clever Tom Clinch, while the rabble was, rode stately through Holborn, to die in his calling'. The poet is telling us that Tom Clinch was going through Holborn, and that the ... The male is slightly smaller than the female. Compared to other small hummingbirds, which often have a slender appearance, the bee hummingbird looks rounded As the smallest bird in the world, it is no larger than a big insect and, as its name suggests, is scarcely larger than a bee. Like all hummingbirds, it is a swift, strong flier. The brilliant, iridescent colors of the bee hummingbird's feathers make the bird seem like a tiny jewel. The iridescence is not always noticeable, but depends on the angle at which a person looks at the bird. Diet The bird's bill is made for probing deep into flowers. The bee hummingbird ... • 4. Analysis Of Jonathan Swift 's ' Gulliver 's Travels ' How Jonathan Swift constructs and uses Gulliver in 'Gulliver's Travels' Jonathan Swift was an English 18th century writer who supported the Monarchy and was a Royalist. He wrote this story while in a club, called 'The Scriblerus Club', in which there were 2 other members; Alexander Pope and John Arbuthnot. All three believed that the society they lived in was corrupt. In this story, Swift indirectly describes the many different faults with man–kind. The story is written in a satiristic style that makes fun of the bad things in society. Swift uses Gulliver to show how corrupt and cruel the 18th century English society was. Swift constructs Gulliver's character through his first person narrative style. His narratives reveal that he is a rather unemotional character. This is shown when he describes and recounts dangerous situations in a matter–of–fact and passive style. A clear example of this is when his ship was destroyed in a storm and all of his companions were lost or dead; 'Twelve of our crew were dead' and 'we therefore trusted ourselves to the mercy of the waves'. Swift is clearly using Gulliver to represent many of the 18th century politicians who had a stiff upper–lip and were unemotional. He is used to satirise 18th Century English society's stereotypical 'stiff–upper lip' approach in life, a character trait which may also be a source of humour for the reader. Swift carefully constructs Gulliver's character through his reactions to certain situations. He presents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Political Analysis Of Jonathan Swift 's Gulliver 's Travel... Political Satire in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travel Vision is the art of seeing things invisible.. –Jonathan Swift Introduction Born on November 30, 1667, Irish author, clergyman and satirist Jonathan Swift grew up fatherless. Under the care of his uncle, he received a bachelor 's degree from Trinity College and then worked as a statesman 's assistant. Eventually, he became dean of St. Patrick 's Cathedral in Dublin. Most of his writings were published under pseudonyms. He best remembered for his 1726 book Gulliver 's Travels. While leading his congregation at St. Patrick 's, Swift began to write what would become his best– known work. In 1726, at last finished with the manuscript, he traveled to London and benefited from the help of several friends, who anonymously published it as Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships–also known, more simply, as Gulliver 's Travels. The book was an immediate success, and hasn 't been out of print since its first run. Interestingly, much of the storyline points to historical events that Swift had lived through years prior, during intense political turmoil. In 1742, Swift suffered from a stroke and lost the ability to speak. On October 19, 1745, Jonathan Swift died. He was laid to rest next to Esther Johnson inside Dublin 's St. Patrick 's Cathedral. • 6. Using Satire in A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift, is an essay that uses satire. Merriam–Webster defines satire as: a way of using humor to show that someone or something is foolish, weak, bad, etc.: humor that shows the weaknesses or bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc. "Satire may make the reader laugh at, or feel disgust for, the person or thing satirized. Impishly or sardonically, it criticizes someone or something, using wit and clever wording–and sometimes makes outrageous assertions or claims" (Cummings, 2012). Swift, best know for "Gulliver's Travels", originally wrote this piece as a pamphlet in 1729 under the full title "A Modest Proposal: For preventing the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their ... The many ways it can be prepared, "stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled" (Swift, 2013), and the useful things that can be done with the leftover skin. Knowing how soft a babies skin is this should make for a fine pare of gloves. Swift does not stop there; he offers up six key areas this will be helpful. First, reducing the number of Catholics, a benefit for sure to any proper Protestant. Second, giving the meager some significance. They are a burden to the whole of Ireland. Third, increasing the nations income, with fewer mouths to feed, and a cash crop so abundantly sourced. Fourth, mothers would no longer have to raise their children beyond one year. (A mothers dream) Fifth, introducing a new dish to the markets for the culinary world to refine and charge as much as they see fit. Finally, it would gain women the same level of respect as the farm animals when they are pregnant. Offering up reasons of objection, Swift suggests that it may impact the population, and then retorts with, that was kind of the idea. • 7. Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift Society vs. Individuality In the novel Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, the influence that society has on Gulliver is very detectable in this book. Throughout the novel, Gulliver repeatedly, finds himself in predicaments because societal norms and the role of government in our society. Swift shows how the idea of who people are due to their position in society. Gulliver is an outsider to the society of Lilliput, he tries to fit into their world but fails, not only because of his size but because of their governmental treason. I believe, Swift wrote the story of Liliput to try and illustrate to us the idea that society and government corrupts individuals. This is shown by the relationships between Gulliver and self–oriented individuals and society–oriented individuals. Swift demonstrates that the government has questionable motives, in the Acts of Conduct that Gulliver has to learn it has in it the description of basically what the King can and cannot do. The first rule they explain is "...the obedience to the king out of terror rather than out of respect". The King shows the fear he instills in his subjects by the phrase, "the Princes of the Earth shake their Knees" (25). The King also tries to rule the heavens and the Earth, "whose Feet press down to the Center, and whose Head strikes against the sun" (25). Even though the king is within his rule, the reader will find the King's methods harsh. Swift is implying that for men to have control over their government or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Good Fat Child With one hundred twenty thousand Irish children out of the population being set aside for dinner, the solution will also help to resolve the issues of overpopulation and unemployment in Ireland, giving the Irish economy a much needed boost, while making it easier for England to deal with its unruly Irish subjects. Swift uses this outrageous concept of selling children as food to deliver a message. One of the most impacting satirical methods Swift utilizes is the statistical analysis he provides in an effort to enhance his satire. Swift goes on to offer statistical support for his proposal and specific data about the number of children to be sold, their weight and price– "I have reckoned upon a medium that a child just born will weigh twelve pounds, and a solar year if tolerably nursed increaseth to twenty–eight pounds... nursing a beggar's ... be about two shillings per annum, rags included; and I believe no gentleman would repine to give ten shillings for the carcass of a good fat child, which, as I have said, will make four dishes of excellent nutritive meat... the mother will have eight shillings net profit, and be fit for work till she produces another child" ( Swift 7–8). He even suggests some recipes for preparing this delicious new meat, reasoning that, with innovative cooks generating ever more and delicious new dishes, it will expand and improve the culinary experience of the wealthy, resulting in a healthier and happier population as a whole. TASERs, used by police departments throughout the United States of America, have become a go to tool for apprehending suspects without fatally wounding them. The first use of primitive TASERs dates back to 1960 and they have come a long way since. Such as advancements such as upgrading from gunpowder to compressed air, to more computerised TASERs that automatically cut off and collect crucial user data. With the advancement of technology, TASERs quickly became a more viable tool for an officer 's duty belt. In the 1960's law enforcement officers faced a multitude of protests from civil rights activists and needed a way to control the crowds without harming the protestors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1974 Jack began his work on his idea drawing inspiration from a book called "Tom Swift and his Electric Rifle. He first created a device that look like a flashlight. The device used gunpowder to fire two prongs attached to wire up to 15 feet. Once the prongs made contact the device pulsed 50,000 volts into the target causing uncontrollable muscle spasms and effectively immobilizing the target without killing. He came up with the name TSR, an acronym for the book in which he got his ideas from, for his invention. Later he would add an "a", making it the well known name today TASER, to the name because he grew tired of saying the letters when talking about his invention. After filing for a patent on his device Jack tried to start selling his new invention. However, the United States government quickly classified his invention as a firearm because of the use of gunpowder. This classification severely hindered his sales but he managed to sell to the Los Angeles Police Department. When efforts to use the device to subdue Rodney King in 1991 failed Patrick Smith teamed up with Jack to help improve the device. One of the major improvements was replacing the gunpowder used to propel the prongs with compressed air. Without gunpowder in the device the classification of firearm was dropped, making selling the device much easier. This caused ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift Satire in "A Modest Proposal" and Different Articles Jonathan Swift, author of "A Modest Proposal," tries to present different ideas in order to change the situation of Ireland. Through his proposal, he is able to get people's attention, and the way he uses satire throughout the article made his argument more successful. He wrote this essay to show how ignored and bad the state of Ireland and its social classes are. In "A Modest Proposal", Swift effectively uses rhetorical exaggeration to express his offense towards England's politicians, and the status of the poor people in the country in the late seventeenth century. His purpose was to raise awareness of what was taking place in that society. Swift expresses his growing annoyance towards the inability of the politicians, the hypocrisy of the rich, the brutality of the English, and the degrading situations in which the Irish people were living in. Swift was trying to persuade the people by proposing this extreme and unusual way for the purpose of provoking them to come up with the right solutions. On the other hand, the Onion is an organization that publishes articles on international, national, and local news. In the following paragraphs, there are similarities and differences between Swift's essay's satire and some articles from the Onion. • 11. The Satirical Transformation Of Gulliver Essay The Satirical Transformation of Gulliver Swift's Gulliver's Travels is difficult to come to terms with for a multitude of reasons. The most immediate problem is that of genre. How may Gulliver's Travels be categorized? It's a fiction; it's written in prose; it's a children's tale; it's a comedy; it's a tragedy; however, to say this is to say very little. Clearly it's satirical, but that is not to say it's a satire. Arther E. Case, for example, thinks that it's not a satire: "it would be more accurate and more illuminating to call it a politico–sociological treatise much of which is couched in the medium of satire" (Four Essays on Gulliver's Travels p. 105). In response to Case's classification, I offer a question: what's the purpose of formal specification if there are numerous imprecise labels to which this work may conform? Swift's masterpiece should be entitled to its own donnée; thus, for the sake of this essay, I will shy from all comprehensive forms of categorization. Instead, I'll consider Gulliver's Travels on its own terms, sui generis, to interpret its unique presuppositions, many of which are expressed satirically. By allowing Gulliver, an uncritical lover of man, to become a hypercritical hater of man, Swift has it both ways: Gulliver functions as both the object and instrument of satire (Four Essays on Gulliver's Travels 106). Perhaps one could reduce Gulliver's voyage to the country of the Houyhnhnms by describing it as a carefully devised fable; however, this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jonathan Swift 's A Modest Proposal Harsh But Solutions Decisions In Ireland According to Sparknotes, In the 1700's, Ireland went through an economic depression as well as other problems in the country such as starvation, overpopulation and intolerable taxation by England. The families in Ireland could not afford to maintain their children therefore the children became a burden. Politicians did nothing to improve Ireland's situation. These ongoing Problems in Ireland led Jonathan Swift to write," A Modest Proposal." In his essay, Swift uses satire to give rational but extreme solutions to Ireland's issues. Swift institutes the practice of cannibalism of children in his essay to address the issue of starvation, economic depression and overpopulation. In "A Modest Proposal," Swift says,"... The remaining hundred thousand may, at a year old, be offered in sale to the persons of quality and fortune, through the kingdom, always advising the mother to let them suck plentifully in the last month, so as to render them plump, and fat for a good table." In this quote, Swift solves three of Ireland 's problems by his proposed plan of cannibalism. Mothers would raise their children to a year old at little to no cost, then the child would be sold to a wealthier family for consumption. This idea gives the family income from selling their child, it gives the buyer a food supply, and it lessens the population of children begging on the streets. • 13. How Does One Define Progress? How does one define progress? The idea of progress has always been of central interest to human beings, but our society has overused the word so much that its definition has fallen into obscurity. Some define it as the pursuit of wellbeing; others imply that it is simply a manner through which one can quantify one's priorities in life. To many people in the 18th century, progress took on this same notion of improvement and advancement. However, satirist writers Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745), Alexander Pope (1688 – 1744), and William Hogarth (1697 – 1764) undermined the notion of progress in their works in order to represent their general disenchantment with humanity. Their prose, poetry, and print works respectively condemn the society of the spectacle that begins to emerge in the 18th century. Ultimately, their satire attacks the actions and interests of Great Britain in a time of purported intellectual improvement. With the publishing of Robinson Crusoe in 1719, the travel novel surfaced as an increasingly popular literary form in Great Britain. This was due to the fact that travel implies going abroad and experiencing new opportunities in addition to serving as a representation of the popular imperialist mindset of the 18th century. Jonathan Swift, ever a fervent observer of society, molded Gulliver's Travels as a parody of travel literature in order to challenge the nation's use of travel as a vehicle of progress. Satirists typically use these devices when hoping to expose, or even humiliate an individual or a society. Writers also use satire when creating social change as well as preventing it. Well known satirists include Mark Twain, Jonathan swift, and many other extarident authors. Every satirists uses different methods or devices to get their point across and effectively at that . Satirists use many different methods and devices like mockery, mock–heroic, and others to use satire effectively and gain an audience's attention. Irony is when you say one thing, yet mean another. This is a very popular device that writers use when creating satire and often used when exploring more momentous topics. Popular writer Mark Twain who is well–known for his effective use of satire often uses irony in his very prevailing yet controversial novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In this historic novel Mark Twain uses irony to mock slavery and the society surrounding it. An example from the novel is when Huck throws salt over his left shoulder in the hopes to ward off back luck. This is ironic because previously to Huck throwing salt over his shoulder he was mocking Tom Sawyer for his ridiculous beliefs yet he believes throwing salt will get rid of any bad mojo. Twain's use of irony not only is criticizing Huck for that but also the whole society during this time, many individuals in this novel have controversial beliefs and somewhat go against their own. Jonathan Swift a very famous satirist and essayist exceedingly known for "Gulliver's Travels" and " A Modest Proposal" also uses irony along with Mark Twain. Irony permeates through Swifts legendary essay " A Modest Proposal". This essay has to do with overpopulation in Ireland and in Jonathan Swift words " For preventing the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the publick.". Satire is a form of writing used to denounce human vice, giving readers an insight on the flaws that the author sees in society. There are two different types of way to present satire: horation and juvenialian. In the three works: Candide by Voltaire, Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes, and A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift all demonstrate the use of satire. A Modest Proposal on the other hand, used juvenalian satire which was too serious to fully grasp the idea Jonathan Swift wanted to show to the readers. Juvenalian satire, quite the opposite of horation, is a specific attack on a individual or human behavior. Swift addresses the solution to the poverty in Ireland in a manner so blunt he sounds somewhat serious about "a young healthy child...stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled" Swift targets his attack on the Irish and exaggerates how far the Irish would go for money (2030). In the four incredible adventures, Gulliver's perceptions are tied closely with Swift's shame and disgust against British government and even against the whole of the human condition as Richard Rodino says in his book that Gulliver is neither a fully developed character nor even an altogether distinguishable persona; rather, he is a satiric device enabling Swift to score satirical points. • 18. Analysis Of ' Swift 's A Modest Proposal ' Madeleine Roepe EN323 Rzepka 3/9/15 Swift and Blake's Use of Irony and Persona In Satire In the context of political questions and social activism, irony, exaggeration, humor, and ridicule are all valuable rhetorical tools to expose faults and make a point (New Oxford American Dictionary). Both Jonathan Swift and William Blake confront social systems of oppression in their literary careers, most notably with A Modest Proposal and Songs of Innocence respectively. Swift's A Modest Proposal is an address to the wealthy English and appeal to the consumerism that drives economic exploitation that causes inequity and poverty. Due to the tense political climate and potential ramifications of his criticism, Swift published the essay anonymously and therefore had to create a persona within the essay to speak for him. Swift uses this unique narrative persona to ironically confront this oppressor class. Blake also makes rhetorical use of the persona and irony to make ideological points but in a noticeably different way; the speaker he creates uses the voice of those being exploited by English social systems rather than a privileged observer. In his poem "The Chimney Sweeper," Blake adopts the voice of a young boy sold into labor. His discussion of mistreatment is more psychological in nature, and contains a complexity considerably absent in Swift's writing. His serious yet hyperbolic and satirical style allows Swift an approach to get people engaged in the difficulties the Irish had to do to survive their everyday life. This essay explores Swift's ability to use literary devices and how these techniques advance his idea about the lack of morale by asking: How and to what extent does Jonathan Swift use satire to highlight the heartless attitudes of society towards the poor Irish families in A Modest Proposal? The scope of the essay is limited to the work done by Jonathan Swift, A Modest Proposal, a literary criticism, an online literary glossary, as well as two more sources on Ireland's historical events. The essay concludes that Swift effectively uses insincerity, irony, and rhetorical exaggeration to reveal his annoyance of politicians, papists, and overall citizens of poverty–stricken Ireland in the late seventeenth century. Jonathan Swift states that the people, politicians, and English were all to be at fault for the terrible state and poverty of Ireland, making it clear that the main target of the essay is not the condition of Ireland, but rather the can–do spirit of the times that led people to devise a number of illogical schemes that would purportedly solve social and economic problems. Swift was born to English parents, Jonathan and Abigale Swift. Unfortunately, Swift's father passed away before his son's birth. At the age of three, Swift was raised by his late father's family. He attended Kilkenny Grammar School with fellow student William Congreve, who would later become a dramatist. From there, Swift moved on to attend Trinity College in Dublin and Hart Hall in Oxford. Swift would acquire his MA from both school in a span of six years (Mossner). In 1698, Swift moved to England to be Sir William Temple's secretary at Moor Park in Surrey. At Moor Park, Swift met a young, nine year old girl name Esther Johnson. He called her "Stella". Swift started off as Stella's tutor, and they would become "lifelong" friends. Some people have been led to believe that in 1716, Jonathan Swift and Stella Johnson were married; however, there is no evidence to prove such accusations. Swift left Temple's aid in 1694 but shortly returned two years later. In the two years that he was away from Moor Park, Swift was part of the "Anglican division of the Irish church" in Dublin (Dewald). Upon his return in 1696 a new path for his future was soon to be discovered. Swift started as an editor of Temple 's letters and then began to write his first works. Discuss the tone of the piece. Pull examples from the text to support your discussion. Swift showed disgust for the people who would rather beg than take care of themselves. He says, "These mothers instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants who, as they grow up, either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country, to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbados." 3. Support your answers with examples from the text. It is an effective satire because it gets the point across very clearly. His descriptions are extremely grotesque and he talks about a very feared subject, cannibalism. This helps draw attention to the seriousness of the problem. Swift also provides statistics, which helps further draw attention to the problem. Some techniques he uses are parody and exaggeration. He uses exaggeration to get his point across and he uses parody to mock the situation. An example of his effective use of satire is, "I have already computed the charge of nursing a beggar's child (in which list I reckon all cottagers, labourers, and four–fifths of the farmers) to be about two shillings per annum, rags included; and I believe no gentleman would repine to give ten shillings for the carcass of a good fat child, which, as I have said, will make four dishes of excellent nutritive meat, when he hath only some particular friend, or his own family to dine with him. Thus the squire will learn to be a good landlord, and grow popular among his tenants, the mother will have eight shillings neat profit, and be fit for work till she produces another child." 7. Swift enumerates six reasons his proposal will work. Discuss how these paragraphs impact his purpose. Swift provides support for each reason he presents in his essay. ... • 33. Analysis Of The Article ' A Modest Proposal ' The article "A Modest Proposal" is a proposal made by a man named Jonathan Swift who is also known for Gulliver's Travels which is another well spoken essay of satire. When the people of Dublin are suffering from poverty and overpopulation, Swift writes up a satirical hyperbole that mocks the heartless Irish attitudes towards the poor. The bottleneck effect of people was so dreadful that all the Catholic families of Dublin were not able to support their own children. Due to these conditions Swift writes this proposal to end the kingdom's issues in a serious but derisive way. All of his solutions tend to be ethically wrong, but he backs up his solutions with statistical facts. Swift's proposal is a satire made to jolt the people of Dublin, Ireland into understanding the growing issues the kingdom faces with poverty and overpopulation. Swift's method of choice for a long term elucidation is to turn the Dubliner's problems into their own solution. The proposal consists of feeding the fattened up children of the poor and selling them to the rich citizens of the kingdom as food. Swift states that doing this will help relieve families from paying for expensive children, decrease overpopulation, add culinary values, increase employment, and will overall add to the economic status of the kingdom. Swift concludes his proposal saying that it is in his greatest interest that his proposal does not take effect, and that his only motives are improving the public good of his country, ... • 34. Jonathan Swift’s Essay A Modest Proposal, and Voltaire’s... There are two vastly differing works of literature that employ similar elements of satire, whether the story is long or short, essay or novella. In these two works, the authors bring light to ongoing social, political, and philosophical issues of their time and age. The two works I am referring to are Jonathan Swift's satirical essay, A Modest Proposal, and Voltaire's novella, Candide, or Optimism. In both A Modest Proposal and Candide, there is a portrayal of irony, cold logic and reasoning rather than emotion, and misguided philosophy. Exploring the issues within these texts can implement a better understanding of not only the literature itself, but also the historical context and the issues of the time. By delving even deeper into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can also be seen when Pangloss churns out philosophical discourse rather than obtaining the oil and wine Candide was begging for after the shipwreck and the earthquake. "'Alas!' said he to Pangloss, 'get me a little wine and oil; I am dying.' 'This concussion of the earth is no new thing,' answered Pangloss. 'The city of Lima, in America, experienced the same convulsions last year; the same cause, the same effects; there is certainly a train of sulphur under ground from Lima to Lisbon.' 'Nothing more probable,' said Candide; 'but for the love of God a little oil and wine.' 'How, probable?' replied the philosopher. 'I maintain that the point is capable of being demonstrated.' Candide fainted away, and Pangloss fetched him some water from a neighbouring fountain." On the other hand, the speaker in A Modest Proposal has immaculate knowledge of his country's financial situation, overpopulation, and famine. He demonstrates this knowledge through careful calculations of how to handle the proposal that he is making. However, there is no use of emotion or empathy in making these calculations "computations;" there is no thought of the moral implications of this proposal and the fact that this can be considered mass genocide based on social class. Rather, the speaker uses objectivity and cold calculations to demonstrate his principle. Both texts demonstrate, as well, a misguided philosophy of sorts as seen through the ... • 35. Suppression and Hence Deterioration in the State of the... In 'A Modest Proposal', swift has portrayed the 18th century Ireland as plagued with the problem of overpopulation, unemployment, poverty and the exploitation of the labor class by the bourgeoisie(middle class). The same problem being addressed by Karl Marx in sociological labor theories. The course of actions suggested by Swift J is, however, adverse and sets forth an example of a satirical classic piece of literature viewed and analyzed by many people over the centuries. The theme of the essay is suppression and hence deterioration in the state of the Catholic subjects at the hands of their Protestant Landlords and similar conditions pertaining to 1729 in Ireland. These problems were partly due to the Irish Catholics supporting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Swift even goes far enough to determine the cost incurred by parents in bearing and rearing such children till one year of age and the profit they can make on the sale. Here, in the veil of heavy sarcasm Swift addresses another ill of the Irish society, that being ill treatment and physical assault by men of their wives. Swift claims here that if the husband knows that "kicking" the wife would potentially harm the child that can be sold for money in the market he will treat his wife more affectionately as she is about to generate income for the family. The leering rhetorical challenge of this satirical essay is capturing the attention of an audience who has appeared indifferent and desensitized at many occasions, this shocking appeal immediately captures their attention. From the starting logos appeal the appeal later in the passage becomes more ethos based as it challenges the morality of the society. The writer appeals to the ethos of the audience by claiming himself as honest time and time again and stating overtly that he has no personal interest as he has no minor children. Swift gives the impression that all the passage comes straight from the heart due to compassion for the Irish population and the concern for their well–being. By doing this, Swift becomes practically successful in the eyes of the audience as it portrays him as the champion of the poor, destitute and oppressed and a hero of the Irish people. Swift also here distances himself from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, the ruby–throated hummingbird will fly as far north as Canada to feed and mate throughout the summer. As fall approaches, they fly south to escape from the harsh winter climate. Unlike birds like geese, the hummingbird migrates on its own. Scientists think they may do this to make themselves less noticeable to predators. Hummingbirds also have the largest brain in relation to its body size amongst all birds. This allows them to remember any place they have feed. As you can imagine, it helps to know all of the places you can go to eat. In addition to their great memory, these birds are also amazing fliers. Gulliver´s Travels by Jonathan Swift: Biographical Summary Gulliver's Travels – Jonathan Swift – Biographical Summary Jonathan Swift was born on November 30, 1667 in Ireland to English parents, Jonathan and Abigail. His father, Jonathan, died shortly after his birth, leaving his mother to raise him and his sister alone. In Ireland, Swift was dependent on a nanny for three years because his mother moved to England. The young man was educated because of the patronage of his Uncle, Godwin Swift. Godwin sent him to Kilkenny Grammar School at age six, which was one of the best primary schools in Ireland at the time. Although the transition from extreme poverty to a private school education was hard, he made it easier by becoming friends with William Congreve, a future poet. Godwin paid for Jonathan, at age fourteen, to attend Trinity College at Dublin where he completed his Bachelors Degree. Swift later completed his M. A. at Oxford in 1692. "In 1701 Swift was awarded a D. D. from Dublin University", which is one notable award that Swift received during his career (Cody). Swift's mother, in an effort to help Jonathan become successful, sent him to work as a secretary under Sir William Temple, an established essayist and graduate from Cambridge. Because Temple was a prominent parliamentary figure, Swift was exposed to a great deal of literature during this time period (1689–1699), which helped shape his books later on. Where poor viewed as having an absence of worth in the public eye, playing no essential part in more noteworthy else 's benefit of the people.
