Ireland Famine
Another topic that Nicholson similarly accounts for is the sheer number of beggars. So many people were out of work, begging was their last resort
in an effort to survive for as long as possible. Nicholson writes that at certain times, she was fearful of entering certain shops. Not because of she
thought she would be robbed, though Nicholson does draw attention to the increased violence in Ireland; "...yet they [the Irish] can plunder and rob;
and these crimes are multiplying and will multiply till a new state of things places them in a different condition." 1No, her main fear was seeing the
agony displayed in the eyes of those in such a state of hunger. She describes the beggars falling to their knees, their hands clasped, and glaring eyes...

.and when it [the country] fell, it fell like an avalanche, sweeping at once the entire land."3 Nicholson says that the upper class regarded the poor
as dirty and lazy; they also apparently did not realized that four million people were entirely reliant upon the potato. She continues to explain that it
took months for the rich to actually believe that the poor were not just reveling in deceit and taking advantage of the rich, the poor were truly poor.4
Evidently though, the famine spread and its effects began to touch more than just the poor. Nicholson first described the fall of Ireland like an
avalanche; she later says, "the pestilence followed the famine and, the entire country seemed to be sinking into the vortex, and a knowledge of
Ireland was gaining by all classes of people, both in and out of the country."5 I would not have imagined that it would have taken months for the
famine to be taken seriously by those in the upper class, simply because the lower class was so much more apparent. I think this type of attitude can
fall into two possible categories: The rich were either stubbornly ignorant, or similarly to Lysaght's thought that they were merely in denial and reluctant
to accept the crisis at hand to its

Case Study: Doucette V. City Of Santa Monica
In Doucette v. City of Santa Monica, the defendant city enacted a solicitation ordinance, whose purpose was to impose reasonable place and manner
limitations on solicitation, in order to protect the general public from abusive solicitations. Doucette, 955 F. Supp. at 1201. The ordinance prohibited
"requests made in person seeking an immediate donation of money or other items of value" in areas including bus stops, public transportation vehicles
or facilities, public parking lots or structures, outdoor dining areas, and within fifty feet of automated teller machines. Id. Plaintiffs filed suit against the
city, alleging that the ordinance violated the First Amendment. Id. at 1198. The city argued that the ordinance "only seek[s] to regulate locations... Show

consisting of people who beg on the public streets and in the public parks of New York City, in regards to a solicitation ordinance that limitedbegging,
verbal and nonverbal, in all public areas of New York City. Loper v. N.Y.C. Police Dep't, 999 F.2d 699, 701 (2d Cir. 1993). The statute stated "A
person is guilty of loitering when he . . . loiters, remains or wanders about in a public place for the purpose of begging . . . ." Id. The defendants
argued that begging had "no expressive element protected by the First Amendment," and that even if it did, the city polices interest outweighed the
plaintiff's interest, as it addressed "the evils associated with begging on the streets of New York City." Id. The defendants further contended that
residents were intimidated and local businesses suffered, as panhandlers were said to station themselves in front of banks, bus stops, automated teller
machines and parking lots. Id. The court held, that even if the state was considered to have a compelling interest in thwarting the evils sometimes
associated with begging, a statute that totally prohibits begging in all public places cannot be considered narrowly tailored to achieve such an end. Id.
at 705. The court reasoned that the total prohibition on begging in the city streets served to silence both speech and expressive conduct.

Rural Beggars In The Ballet Class By Edgar Degas
are going onto the field after the harvest and picking up the leftovers of corn. They are a type of rural beggars in an old traditional way. At the
distance grain stack are seen piled up and the people who harvested them are bent over exhausted after harvesting all the crops. Large bundles of
grain are visible in the background. In the foreground the three women are seen working almost in a solitary manner, collecting the leftovers to feed
their families. On close observation it is seen that they have a white cloth tied around their hips which looks a bit heavy indicating they have been
collecting these leftovers for a while. Yet this amount is very small compared to the enormous harvest in the background. A man sitting on a horse
can be seen in the background which looks like he is supervising the work done by the harvesters. He pays no attention to these three women at all.
Even though these women are some kind of beggars they still appear strong and well fed. The colour used on the women is contrasting to the
background. They are bent and hence and below the horizon line. Their bent–over round shape somehow blends and adds a rhythm to the piles of
harvest in the background. Millet is trying to convey this harsh truth in a soft manner by... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Degas attended the opera and was fascinated by the ballet dancers. He was allowed backstage by a friend. He studied every movement of the dancers,
their body language, each pause and every expression on their faces. In his painting the dancers are seen stretching and adjusting their outfits. His
fascination was more towards the rehearsal than the performance on stage. The dancers in his painting are seen playing with their hair and ribbons
giving little attention to their master. They look exhausted in the painting. Even though this is the work of an impressionist a little bit of perspective

We Are Not Beggars : Film Analysis
I could still remember few years ago, when I saw the young migrant workers wandered on the streets of my city, my feeling was abhorrent, repugnant.
This negative impression was caused by their significant identities as physical workers: untidy appearances, odd smells, strong accents and low
education. Even though they looked young, they were sophisticated and unctuous to work in the society. This emotion separated me away from them,
so I had never considered the reasons and stories–difficulties–behind the surface of experienced social men, until I watch the documentary film We Are
Not Beggars. The movie has recorded several poor rural children's daily lives, as street performers, to earn money in modern cities. The movie is
released in 1997, when China is on the cusp of its economic boom, and their reasons for earning money are supporting the family's financial
difficulty and going back to school. I'm surprised about their simple wishes, even though it seems unachievable at that time. As far as I know, in
contemporary China, the government provides citizens the free but compulsory education from elementary school to middle school countrywide.
Therefore, I wonder if those children will be happier if they live in today's society, based on the realized dream of going back school. Unfortunately,
their situation won't be better, or could even be worse, if they live in today's society. Nowadays, the cheap labor cost has attracted both numbers of

What Is The Problem Of Beggary
One of the major social problems in the world and especially in India is beggary. It is a state or condition of complete poverty. Beggary which is
today affecting a high number of beggars in India who are forced to do begging because their societies fails in providing any good Flipside to them.
Beggars are seen in town, village, and city. They sit in the busy places like, banks, rivers, and temples. They ask people to give them money, food, and
anything they need. Beggary is connected to the poverty. There are various causes, effects, solution of beggary problem. There are several serious
cases of beggary: social, economics, biological causes. The first cause is economic causes like: poverty, essential needs are not achieved,
non–availability of employment and no means to support themselves. Present economy has not been able to provide enough employment. Beggary has
been made a profession as it is easy going. In India ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Catcher in the Rye Theme Essay
"Catcher in the Rye" written by J.D. Salinger, is a novel in which the author creates much irony in the way he presents the loss of innocence or the fall
from innocence in his main character, Holden Caulfield. While Holden clearly believes in protecting the innocence of children in society, he himself
cannot seem to hang onto his own innocence. Throughout the novel Holden shows his love and protection for childhood innocence, the irony that he in
fact himself may be losing his own childhood innocence mainly due to the responsibilities which he has taken on, and also shows that he may be more
innocent than the reader first thinks as his simplified view of a complex world is much like an innocent child would see. In this novel ... Show more

Synopsis Of The Summer Spring
Seasons
That time of year is here. The weather has begun to change from the blistering July heat, to the cool evenings of September. There is no longer the
need to flip channel after channel on the television to find something to watch since it is finally football season. The vivid green leaves are
beginning to fade out and become different shades of brown, orange, and red. Leaves begin to fall from the upmost branches of the tree and float
their way down to the ground. Kids gather around to collect the fallen leaves and jump into the enormous pile created by doing the chore of raking.
Taste buds begin to water as the thought of warm cider and sweet pumpkin pie comes into the picture. The ladies begin to get out their favorite
sweater, pair of jeans, and boots to wear out as the cooler nights approach. While every season has its own sense of wonder, autumn is the best one of
them all.
The paramount of this season is the plethora of activities that go on in a short amount of time. From the end of August to November, you can almost
catch every high school kid on a Friday night in a stadium decked out in latest costume related to that game's student section theme. Whether it's a tacky
tourist uniform or your American patriot, you can always see an eye–catching outfit. After their years of experience of high school football, the real test
of dedication comes to the Saturday games. Tailgating before the games is the excitement that brings everyone together. Leading into late

Analyze Attitudes and Responses Toward the Poor in Europe...
During the mid 15th century to the early 18th century almost half of Europe's total population could be considered poor and destitute. The attitudes
of the clergy and the attitudes of the socially elite toward these people varied from pity to disgust, and their proposed solution to these problems
differed. Some suggested helping all of the poor by giving them alms, some warned others to be careful of whom the money was given to and some
people believed that being poor was a voluntary decision and if they wanted to get out of that situation, they do so without the help of others. In
particular the clergy supported alms giving, government officials and the nobility advocated controlled giving, and some of the middle class were
suspicious... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(d–11) He notes that the poor often talk about how accustomed they were to that lifestyle in that they can be independent and sleep where wherever
they want because they have no worries. This view of the poor can be debated because during the mid–1500s, a peasant revolt occurred and was
violently suppressed when Martin Luther expressed his distain for the stupid peasants and their misinterpretation of his teachings. In 1625, cardinal
Richelieu suggested that people should give discerningly to the poor because the vagabonds were taking advantage of the situation and were being
helped out by the kindhearted. (d–8) As time progressed new ideas came into society. Instead of giving freely to the poor, they should be made to work
for their money, as Emperor Charles V expressed in his imperial decree for Netherlands. (d–4) "Experience shows that begging for alms . . . errors and
abused will result . . ." therefore, he proposed that only the sick and those unable to work should receive aid. An English doctor noted that beggars,
who came to his house, expressed a desire to live a sick but easy life rather than to get well and have to work hard to earn a

The Friar 's A Friar

The Friar
A friar is a simple man whose job was to beg from the poor and give to the Roman Catholic Church. The friar takes as much as one would need to live
a humble life and offers the rest for the better of the church and poor. In the Roman Catholic Church a friar is considered a monk, and therefore expected
to be fair and reserved. However, Chaucer describes the friar, or Hubert, in a sarcastic tone exposing his corrupt ways to only profiting himself from
the poor.
The Friar is a happy and cheerful person, with a pleasant personal demeanor. Although his position in the clergy limits him to receive his needs by
begging within the area he resides, he lives a very lavish and unrestrained life "without cause or reason he does what he wants without regard to anyone
else" (208–209). Of the four religious orders he has the smoothest manners and linguistic abilities. Because of his cheerful disposition and personality
he is very well liked in his area and enjoyed performing weddings and spending time with the ladies; "the community was fond of him and especially
with the more affluent and well to do landowners and woman" (212–216). He considered himself very good in the duty of confessional even better than
those in the church that that is their sole purpose and duty. He was fully licensed and took the sins of his community with gentle and kind regard; "he
freed them from their sin with compassion and removed all fear

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Beggars In Pakistan
Beggars are everywhere in Pakistan. They are found in nearly every village, town and city. The main hubs of their action are places of worship and
bazaars. They can be seen on the sides of the roads in front of the mosques and other places of hectic activity. They move from street to street, from
one area to another and beg for alms, food and money. They take whatsoever is given to them. Sometime, individual comes across a deaf or dumb
beggar lifting a sightless or lame beggar on his back and begging for charities.
The number of beggars in Pakistan is growing rapidly. These beggars live on the incomes of others. It is indeed a curse that even able–bodied peoples
of Pakistan resort to begging. They indulge in numerous evils like drinking and gambling. There are diseased. They bring with them infection and
roam from place to place and thus are responsible to an immense amount for spreading epidemics. Begging must be banned in Pakistan by law.
However, deserving should be facilitated and others should be given productive opportunities. Street begging is certainly a great irritation. ... Show

I was quite concerned as to why countless beggars are there, in a city which is the second largest city and cultural center of Pakistan. Huge
movement from the rural areas to find work could be one cause, but then why they beg? Thoughts pass through my mind on general trend of
begging as to what forces a person to stretch out his hand to others and beg. Why would somebody need to begin this day? Is it an action of
desperation, as that person has no other ways of making a living, or is it just a absence of self–morale, Can we apportion the presence of begging on
our social attitudes, whereby beggars have become complacent and rely on hand–outs. Does begging exist because people are treating this as a
profession, or does it exist because a particular State government has ignored the poors. (Imran,

The Legend Of Maria Lionza And The Myth Of Venezuela
Many myths and legends are told time and time again in Latin American countries. I come from a country where myths and legends are usually scary;
therefore, Latin American mythology is quite different from the Greek/Roman mythology. However, there is this one myth that has been passed down
from generation to generation since the late 1800s, that somewhat follows the same path of Greek mythology. It tells the story of a Goddess called
"Maria Lionza", she is considered one of the most important figures if not the most important one of Venezuela's indigenous past.
Maria Lionza was an indigenous Goddess, She was born around 1535. She was the daughter of the Chief of their tribe known as "Yaracuy", the
granddaughter of Chief Chilua and the great–granddaughter of Chief Yare, all great warriors and leaders. During that period, every time that a Native
Indian Chief had a daughter, they had to make sure that the child had dark eyes; otherwise, they would have to kill her because it was against their
beliefs and culture. The shaman of the village had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

combines spirit possession, black magic, rites and Catholic rituals. They have used the image and spirit of Maria Lionza as the main figure of their
religion or cult, estimates suggest that around 20% of the Venezuelan population belong to the cult. On the other hand, the rest of the population is
completely against the cult, they say that the image of Maria Lionza is being used for black magic and spirit possession which goes against the myth,
she was the Goddess of nature, love, peace, and

Concepts Affecting John's Reasoning
A night after the football game while John was heading through the parking lot he found a beggar who was asking for money to buy food. John
considered giving money to the beggar, but decided not to give him the money. This essay is going to point out concepts that could have affected
John's reasoning. First the concept will be introduced. Then the concept will be defined. Afterwards a quote will be shown to support the concept. Then
Finally I will explain the connections between the quotes and the concepts. There are seven concepts that play a part on the way John handled his
situation. The concepts are Obligation, Prima facie vs. Actual duties, Reciprocity, Categorical Imperative, Teleologicalethics, Operational motif of
ethics, and The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teleological ethics means an individual makes an ethical decision to bring about a positive end result for self, others, and our society. This is
shown when John is talking about the beggar and says "bring about a good outcome of him". By saying this John is stating that he wants the man to
to have a positive outcome of his life. The next concept is Operational motif of ethics. Operational motif of ethics means that an individual makes a
decision based on fear of consequences. This concept is seen in when John starts Predicting what the bad things that the beggar could do by saying
"if he's lying and was going to use the money for drugs or booze". This shows that John is more worried about what can go wrong then the fact that
the beggar needs money for food.
The last concept shown is the lesser of evils. Lesser of the evils means that out of two events one outweighs the other based on the one that seems to
do the least amount of harm. John looks at his actions carefully and says"instead of feeling good about myself, I would come to hate myself". He
says this because he had to weigh out the fact that of him feeling good, and being a better person, instead he realizes that the lesser of the evils would
be to keep his

Strong response to Emily Andrews 'Why I don't Spare 'Spare...
Emily Andrews argues in her essay "Why I Don't Spare "Spare Change"" that it does more harm than good to give money to beggars on the street
rather than giving to an organization such as United Way to help the needy, pointing out that "one cannot be certain that one is giving to a needy
individual" and that by giving to a charitable organization "ones money is likely to be used wisely." I believe Andrews has set up her essay well, her
title alerting the reader of the topic, having an attention–grabbing sentence in the first paragraph starting with common phrases as "poor but honest",
and having a sense of her audience, taking account of how her readers feel about her arguments. However, I do think that she has made some

In this last aspect, the fact that this film is much more violent and gory, definitely helps the action, as it brings it much closer to the Shaw Brothers
wuxia films. This trait finds its apogee in the final fight, which is elaborate as it is lengthy, with the duel among different styles of martial arts
presenting a very entertaining outcome. The one in the rain is also well–shot.
Regarding the first aspect, the film benefits the most from Sun Hao's acting, who is quite persuading in both the dramatic and the action scenes, within
the reasonable, of course, hyperbole of the wuxia genre. Furthermore, the concept of drug addiction gives another level to the film, more meaningful,
without though, faulting the entertainment aspect.
As is the case with "Beggar So", the overall production is impressive, and highlights its big budget, particularly in the presentation of the era and the

Beggars Can T Be Choosers Analysis
Beggars can't be choosers. That's what I told myself. For years I've been trying – unsuccessfully – to watch films from the Coen brothers. So far, I've
managed to only catch up with their "True Grit" remake, which I did not care for. Now, after scouring Netflix and TV for what seemed like ages, I
came across "The Ladykillers." I knew this movie does not have a particularly upstanding reputation, as Coen fanatics and regular moviegoers don't
seem to like it. But I still need to educate myself on the Coens. Beggars can't be choosers.
This remake of a 1955 film of the same name stars Tom Hanks as G.H. Dorr, a southern professor. Dorr rents a room in Mississippi home of Marva

Hall as the landlady is serviceable in the role, bringing a certain honesty and genuineness to the performance. J.K. Simmons does fine in his role, too,
although I would not put this performance up with his best work by any means. Lastly, since Tzi Ma and Ryan Hurst have smaller, one note/joke roles,
Marlon Wayans does his thing as a loudmouthed, foulmouthed black "punk." His shtick quickly becomes tiresome and annoying, though, as we have
seen this character type too many times for it to provide much amusement.
Though the performances are important, the main reason I watched "The Ladykillers" was to begin to get a grasp for the Coen brothers. I was
intrigued by the Coens from their work in this movie. Partly because this is only the second film of theirs I've seen, but also partly from their
ingeniousness, I never knew what to expect from the camera. This led to a more visually exciting experience as I leaned forward in my seat in
anticipation of the Coens' next

St. Augustine Confessions
In his autobiography Confessions, Saint Augustine tells the story of the day he walked to give a speech of undeserved praise towards emperor, and on
the way Augustine spots a drunken beggar asking for change that would ultimately help shape Augustine's views of true happiness and life fulfillment.
Saint Augustine made the realization that just as the beggar perceived themselves fulfilled by alcohol, he himself tried to find to find fulfillment
through others looking highly upon him and praising him. However, much like the pleasure the beggar received from consuming alcohol, the pleasure
Augustine found through others gratification was only temporal. Augustine theorized that the true fulfillment that he seeks can only come from living
a life deemed worthy by God. This idea opposes the Grecian ideals found in Homer's The Odyssey . For the Greeks, a person strived to make a name for
themselves for the sake of eternal glory. In essence, it was solely for self–pride that the Grecian warrior performed heroic deeds. They attributed their
skill to themselves, almost trying to become equal to the gods they worshiped. This encounter with the beggar helped transform Augustine's view,
causing him to stray away from performing deed solely for Earthly recognition, but instead make an eternal name for himself in the light of God. In his
opening remarks with the beggar, Augustine notes "I was all hot for honours, money, marriage: and You made mock of my hotness" (Augustine 101). In

Analysis Of Arhats Giving Alms To Beggars
Just as it's human nature to believe in something larger or more powerful than oneself, it is also human nature to express that divinity through art, this
is proven time and time again in human history. Picturing the divine is a type of testimony to show a cultures greatness. The painting Arhats Giving
Alms to Beggars comes from the Chinese culture of the Southern Song period. Whereas, the mosaic Christ as Pantocrator comes from the Byzantine
culture of the Greek Orthodox tradition. Although these paintings come from very different backgrounds both cultures show the divine and their
pressure on mankind to follow the rules, such as giving away worldly desires. By doing so and letting go of material possessions, mankind can be
hopeful of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The attachment the beggars have on worldly desires is shown by their actions towards the coins. The painting is abstract and stylized as it shows the
arhats being twice the size of the beggars. This is called the hierarchal scale because the artist wanted to portray the arhats as more grand and
important compared to the beggars. Another abstract and stylized feature is that the arhats seem to be floating in a cloud and not physically on the
ground. However, there are some components of naturalism. For example, the shading of the arhats clothing gives the effect of movement and flow
as they gracefully stride down to earth. Arhats Giving Alms to Beggars is more abstract and stylized when compared to the typical naturalistic
features of the Southern Song period. A good example is On a Mountain Path in Spring which shows an abundance of naturalism. Arhats Giving Alms
to Beggars also shows more human figures and less nature unlike the earlier landscape paintings of the Southern Song period. The apse mosaic, Christ
as Pantocrator, comes from the Byzantine culture. Found at a cathedral in Sicily at Monreale, Italy. The cathedral was constructed under Norman rule
by William II to show his power and authority. The mosaic dates back to 1180 CE. Like the painting Arhats Giving Alms to Beggars, Christ as
Pantocrator also evokes religious interpretation for it pictures the divine. The use of space, color, and comportment helps elaborate the

Arrogant Beggar Character Analysis
Anzia Yezierska provided readers a small glimpse into the world of immigrant life during the progressive era in her novel, Arrogant Beggar. Though
narrator of the story, Adele, was an American born citizen– she was immersed in a world similar to the experience of one of immigrant status.
Throughout her story, we see how social class, ethnicity, and political factors play a part in daily life of early nineteenth century Americans. Her
journey is a reflection of what many young immigrants experienced in their search for freedom, prosperity and "The American Dream."
The expectation for new opportunity in America was an aspiration held by all those willing to leave their native counties–seeking a land of promise.
While the United States certainly provided a chance of these fortunes, these freedoms came at a steep price. The initial process of traveling abroad was
grueling. Away from the comforts of home, precious belongings and a culture that felt familiar–adjusting to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Disillusioned by the hallow ideals held by elite figures in the novel, Adele finds solace in her old life. She never wanted to be seen as a beggar–as
someone that couldn't provide for herself without the help of charity. The nature of tribalism amongst social and ethnic groups can serve to uplift
communities but may also hinder ones access to better understanding different cultures and ideals. Adele made the choice to move back to the
tenements and create her own means of charity through her restaurant. Its hard to speculate how her life would have ended up if she made a different
decision, but its stories like Adele's that pave the way for so many others. Arrogant Beggar is a particular testament to the "immigrant experience"
throughout this crucial period in United States history and one that laid the foundation for America's

"Beauty frightens", were her thoughts. She was always afraid of things that were either too beautiful or too horrible. A beggar with the wound
seemed a horrible thing for her, but after comparing herself to a beggar, she was resembling herself to him: "How is that I've never realized that I'm a
beggar, too? I've never begged for spare change but I've begged for the love of my husband, who's got his two lovers, I beg for the love of God that
people find me pretty, happy, and acceptable, and the clothes of my soul are ragged..." Being in a situation as never before, she was exposed to
that man (beggar). She didn't know how to save her own life. She was in despair because she was in an unanticipated situation. She gave out her
only money to a beggar and was left with nothing on the street next to a beggar, so she decided her next husband was the beggar. Carla figured out
why the beggar has a wound on his leg: "The beggar's daily bread came from his round, open wound." She would judge the beggar from a positive
point of view: "look, the beggar has sex, too, he said he had eleven children. He doesn't attend social engagements, he doesn't get into Ibrahim's

Concealing Abusive Relationships through Social Identity In the short story "The Beggar Maid", Alice Munro explores the opposing force created
from contrasting social identities between partners which later can create an abusive relationship. Your social identity, in terms of social class, is an

abusive relationship. The term abuse tends to correlate with physical actions, however, it is important to acknowledge that abuse can also be

The theme of The Beggar is the failure to find meaning in life and existence. This is what the main character, Omar, struggles with for the wholenovel.
In the beginning, Omar visits a doctor and explains his situation, '"The problem is very serious. I don't want to think, to move, or to feel.
Everything is disintegrating and dying. My hope n coming here was to find some physical cause."' Omar's problems only get worse from here.
Soon he grows restless with his wife, and loses interest in her. He tries to escape his condition by distracting himself with love, hoping that initial
passion will kill the illness. Only one morning at dawn, does he get relief. For a second, he is overcome with a revelation of joy, but it does not last
long at all, and he cannot re–create it. When nothing works, he decides to outcast himself to the countryside hoping he will experience the euphoria

Bent Double, Like Old Beggars Under Sacks '
DPs I found this poem quite shocking, as it expresses the horrors of war in such a brutal and grotesque manner. As a result, it was an eye–opening to
hear and visualize how savagely violent being on the battlefield truly is. One critical aspect of the text is the author's inclusion of similes in order
to capture the essence of how heart wrenching it is to be a soldier. An example of this occurs in the beginning of the poem when the narrator is
describes the other soldiers as, "Bent double, like old beggars under sacks," (1). In this example, the author shines light on how pitiful and hopeless
they look from the effects of war. Additionally, the narrator presents a gruesome description of how much suffering another soldier faces after he is
gassed in war by stating, "His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;" (20). After reading this line, it became extremely apparent to me as to how
sickening it would be to witness such a grotesque and inhumane act during war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the author incorporates such sharp contrasts through his usage of adjectives to indicate the poem's irony. This is exemplified as the narrator
witnesses another soldier who has been gassed where he asserts, "the blood Come gargling from the froth–corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as
the cud" (21–23). From this horrid description given of the soldier, it becomes even more evident to the reader of how destructive and disgusting it is
for the narrator to witness such acts on an everyday basis. CR (assigned passage: lines 9–14 of

Comparing Beggar Woman by William King and To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell 'Beggar Woman'(William King) and 'To His Coy
Mistress'(Andrew Marvell) are two poems written in the 17th century when society was very different to how it is today: women had no status,
rights, or independence. All aspects of society were male dominated, they ruled, and so all laws and acts were in the favour of males. The poems are
great examples of how society was when they were written, they also mirror the roles each gender played in the various aspect of life, the males active
and controlling, the women passive, and they had to be compliant. At the beginning of this poem, there is a description of a gentleman out hunting,

some help with her burden, even though it is slowing him from getting what he wants, he will wait, for principal: he must not be seen to assist, or
sympathise with the lower classes in anyway, even when not in public. It probably also makes him feel big, and he thinks, makes her feel as if
he's in control, a show of supposed power. Conversation which then follows is suggestive of the woman's profession. "'Sitting' says she 's' not
usual in my trade'" this, I believe is a sort of innuendo 'Let's be honest, I'm usually on my back'. The baby in the poem is described as a 'burthen' on
her, aside from the physical aspect, I believe because she has neither the income nor the lifestyle to bring up the child in any kind of security. The
Beggar Woman tricks the man into taking the baby by making every excuse so as to force him to take the baby, if he wants sex; however she does
this not particularly skillfully but the man is under the illusion he is acting of his own free will. Out of desperation, he says "'Were the child tied to

The Cult You 're By Kalle Lasn
The phenomenon of consumerism is quiet powerful due to the impact on individual's lives. Society has come to the point, happiness is associated with
consumption. However, the way consumerism works, is if the items being purchased gives temporary happiness. There individuals are always buying
the latest products to remain happy. In the text, "The Cult you're in" Kalle Lasn, discusses a cult–like nature of consumer culture on Americans. Lasn
uses the work 'cult' as a metaphor; he does not mean an actual cult but American consumers seem to be in a cult–like nature. The ideal example of

Penelope's Recognition of Odysseus as a Beggar Essay example
In Homer's epic The Odyssey, Odysseus returns to the island of Ithaka disguised as a beggar. He reveals his real identity to his son, Telemakhos,
as well as a few others who he would need to help kill the suitors. However, Odysseus does not reveal himself to his wife, Penelope. She recognizes
the beggar as her long lost husband and chooses not to unveil his true identity. Penelope does this because she realized that her husband would be in
danger, in his current surroundings, if she was to reveal who he really was. Therefore she acts as if she does not know the beggar is Odysseus. However,
it is portrayed subtly in the book that she does indeed know that the beggar is her husband.
The very first piece of evidence Homer provides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the morning light you'll bathe him and anoint him so that he'll take his place beside Telemakhos feasting in hall."(P. 363 ln 375–380) This treatment
of a mere beggar who showed up to her house, is very odd considering she has been trying to fight off over one hundred other guests for a number
of years. Telemakhos even comments that such treatment of a guest is very much not in Penelope's character, "Nurse, dear nurse, how did you treat
our guest? Had he a supper and a good bed? Has he lain uncared for still? My mother is like that, perverse for all her cleverness...?" (P. 379 ln146–149).
This comment by Telemakhos shows that in the past Penelope has not been as hospitable toward guests. Therefore it is interesting that she would treat
such a beggar with such care and compassion. The reason she does this is that she now has an increasing suspicion that the beggar is in fact her
husband, Odysseus.
One of the more telling pieces of evidence that Penelope knew Odysseus from the beginning, has to do with the bathing of Odysseus' feet in book
19. When told by Penelope to take a footbath, Odysseus refuses unless he can have it done by an old and wise maid, so Penelope chooses Eurykleia.
While bathing Odysseus' legs, Eurykleia would find the large scar on his thigh, from a childhood accident, identifying him to her as Odysseus. Even
before that however, she makes comments about how the beggar

The Beggar Maid : Stories Of Flo And Rose
Train to Toronto In 1978, Alice Munro published a book of short stories titled "The Beggar Maid: Stories of Flo and Rose". "Wild Swans", one of the
stories within the book, tells of Rose on a train to Toronto. A self–proclaimed minister of the United Church took a seat beside her and proceeded to
sexually abuse her under the cover of a newspaper and a guise of sleep. The character, Rose, was one with a vivid imagination which had led
people to believe she made up the entire incident in her mind. Yet after a careful reading of the story "Wild Swans", it became immediately
apparent that Rose was indeed abused due to historical reference, lack of attraction, and signs of PTSD. Flo, Rose's stepmother, often recounted
stories of things she had witnessed during her time working as a coffee shop waitress in Union Station. "Flo said to watch for White Slavers... [t]hey

such a time as you were thoroughly degraded and in despair, your insides torn up by drunken men and invested with vile disease, your mind destroyed
by drugs, your hair and teeth fallen out" (Munro 148–149). While it is true that Flo had a flair for the dramatics, she was not simply being paranoid
when she warned Rose to "Watch out... for people dressed up as ministers. They were the worst. That disguise was commonly adopted by White

Charles Baudelaire's To A Redheaded Beggar Girl
In French poet Charles Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil, the theme of urban watching occurs for many times. The section Parisian Scenes demonstrates
Baudelaire's particular interest in urban life. Being attentive to people and objects in the city, Baudelaire performs the urban spectatorship as his
personal way of interacting with the world around him. In the poems Landscape, To a Redheaded Beggar Girl, and The Little Old Woman, Baudelaire
observes, reacts to, and finally "paints" the scenes of modern life. Fifty years later, as an American Ashcan school artist, John Sloan (1871–1951)

Summary Of The Beggar Maid By Alice Munro
Accepting Abusive Relationships through Insecurities In the short story "The Beggar Maid", Alice Munro explores the opposing forces created from
contrasting social identities between partners, which may later result in an abusive relationship. Social identity, in terms of social class, is an
understanding of yourself and is based on where you are seen in a social hierarchy. Socioeconomic position is often a major contributing factor in
abusive relationships. The term abuse tends to be correlated with physical actions, however, it is important to acknowledge that abuse can also be

also experiencing a similar feeling of isolation. Unfulfilled expectations and pressure from Patrick's parents make him feel isolated and insecure
and are ultimately causes of his nervous actions. The relationship between Patrick and Rose show two people from different ends of the social
hierarchy. The insecurities that Rose and Patrick have from their respective social upbringing has caused them both to accept and take part in an
abusive relationship. The difficult process of leaving an intimate partner is explored through a study and provides evidence as to why it is so
difficult for Rose to leave Patrick. Another source suggests that Patrick's emotional insecurities that later lead to him being involved in an abusive
relationship can be traced back to his childhood and the negative relationship that he had with his parents. Patrick's wealthy lifestyle deeply contrasts
with Rose's, this is primarily seen through their overall outlook on each other's upbringing. Alice Munro clearly depicts the experience that both
Patrick and Rose had while visiting each other's family. Patrick first made it clear to Rose that she should not "reveal to his parents that she had not
paid for her own ticket." This triggered insecurities as the sense of inferiority Rose felt towards Patrick deepened. Her negative reaction to Patrick's

Penelope's Early Recognition of Odysseus
When it comes to Penelope there is much controversy surrounding whether or not she recognized her husband Odysseus disguised as the beggar. I
believe Penelope intuitively knew that Odysseus was the beggar but did not want to raise any red flags to the suitors, so she conjured up a clever way
of ensuring that Odysseus could claim her "fair and square". This recognition may not have been immediate but at a certain point after conversing
with the beggar I believe Penelope perceived that the beggar was her husband. There are many questions surrounding whether this is so, however there
is quite a bit of evidence that can qualify this theory as plausible. Some question whether Odysseus was recognized by Penelope and if this helped to

This strategy works as he questions who has been fooling with his bed. I can certainly imagine Penelope mischievously smiling at his reaction. In
book 19 when Penelope interrogates the beggar there are some indications that she has some suspicion about the beggar's identity. The fact that she
questions him about the jewelry he is wearing because it resembles something that belongs to her husband might be an indication that she has a notion
that the beggar might just be her husband. John B Vlahos expressed similar sentiment about the interview between Penelope and the beggar and her
commenting on the jewelry. "Penelope suspects in book 19 that the beggar is her husband as the result of his answering, in great detail, her questions
regarding the clothes and jewelry Odysseus wore when he left Ithaca twenty years earlier. Harsh goes on to suggest that, though she is not sure, based
on her suspicion, she announces the contest with the bow. He believes that she later uses the so called "test of the bed" in book 23 to be absolutely
sure of the stranger's identity" (Vlahos, 6).
The fact that she is not only able to pour her heart out to the beggar but also make note of something like the jewelry he is wearing makes this
conversation a bit more interesting. She recognizes the jewelry as resembling something belonging to Odysseus and finds it a little strange that this
beggar could own such a

Poetry from other Cultures
Question 2
Culture means the beliefs, traditions, and customs of people within a society. Fundamental aspects of a culture are faith, values, and history. People
that share a culture also share its beliefs and ways of life, which are different to others. Poetry is an effective way of describing and exploring a culture,
and events within it, because certain aspects can be expressed with vivid descriptions, and imagery that would be unsuitable in other types of text.
Some cultures have also used poetry as a form of storytelling, describing events that happened to their ancestors, or even themselves. Poems can be

Water is described as being sacred and is referred to as a 'sudden rush of fortune' when the pipe bursts, showering the residents with it's contents. The
poem is also related to religion, with references to 'a kindly god' and the 'blessing' that it brings, and it is also based on poverty, community, and
celebration. The poem opens with a strong statement in the first line. 'The skin cracks like a pod'. This uses a simile to describes the hard, dirty,
dusty ground cracking open from lack of water, by comparing it to the very different image of a ripe, luscious green pea pod splitting open to
reveal its moist, juicy contents. Onomatopoeia is used in 'crack' to emphasise the meaning and make the descriptions seem real. The second line,
'There is never enough water' tells the reader that it is obviously in a place of poverty, or where the weather is always very hot. The second stanza
has a very different tone to the direct, strong opening. It is soft, and gentle and describes 'the small splash' of water which is so rare to the town and
community within it. The metaphor in lines 4–6 describes the water's 'echo in a tin mug' as sounding like 'the voice of a kindly god', this helps the
reader to visualise small drops of water splashing into a mug, producing a sound

Comparing the Attitudes Towards Love and Relationships in The Beggar Woman by William King and To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell
In this essay I will be comparing two poems, The Beggar Woman and To His Coy Mistress. I will be looking at how the themes of love and
relationships are dealt with. I will also be looking at the historical context of the poems.
Firstly in The Beggar Woman, written around 1663 to 1712, by William King. The story within the poem is about a gentleman who, whilst he is out
hunting, wants to do another kind of 'sport', i.e. looking for a woman to have sex with. He found a woman who was a beggar. He asked her if she
wanted to have sex in the woods, and, to his delight, she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"A gentleman in hunting rode astray,
More out of choice than that he lost his way:
He let his company the hare pursue,
For he himself had other game in view:"
This quote shows that he was chasing a woman and that he is not looking for anything more than sex. He just wants a bit of fun like any sport would
give him.
When reading the poems they create images of what is happening are created. In The Beggar Woman, William King does not use any similes or
metaphors. I think this is because he needs to keep things simple for his audience. When he wrote it, he relied on his descriptive words to create a
mental picture for the reader. For example, "mounts the infant with a gentle toss upon her generous friend, and like a cross, the sheet she with a
dextrous motion winds" and "her cheeks were fresh and linen clean." When reading this line, you can imagine her cheeks; they are smooth, rosy, red,
beaming cheeks. Both these quotes make you 'see' an image created by his cleverly written words.
In To His Coy Mistress,Andrew Marvell does use metaphors and similes because he thinks the audience expects them as they are upper class. Some
examples of the imagery created by metaphors and similes are "vegetable love," which is a metaphor; "times' winged chariot" and "his slow chapped
power", which are personification; "like morning dew" and "like

continued exploring false truths with the Manichees. Like Augustine did, I believe that we should not envy poor beggars who appear to be happier
than us, but rather learn a lesson from their displays of happiness. Beggars are certainly not better off than any other person, nor are they less stressed,

The Revolt Of Mother By Mary E. Wilkins
Even in the 21st century, there is still a lingering idea that women strictly belong in the home. This can be attributed to both the continuous, though
evolved, embrace of the Cult of Domesticity and natural law. In the eighteenth century the Cult of Domesticity was embraced and challenged by many
women, as it is today. "The Revolt of Mother" by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman is a literary example that reinforces the idea of the Cult of Domesticity by
showing the reader the boundaries between genders and the power, however limited, that a woman has. In contrast, Kate Chopin's "The Story of An
Hour", shows the constraints that gender roles put on a woman. Chopin's story challenges the Cult of Domesticity by using the character's internal
dialogue to show that this was not the life she pictured. The Cult of Domesticity can be tied to other themes, such as the burden of motherhood, as in
"I Stand Here Ironing" by Tillie Olsen. The home and the children were all under control of the woman of the house, and though it sometimes feels
like a burden, it is the woman's obligation. Olsen did not fully accept nor fully condemn the Cult of Domesticity; she simply presented it as the way of
life. By using the main character's internal monologues and their actions to control, or not control, their domains, each of these authors presents their
view on the Cult of Domesticity. Wilkin's story, "The Revolt of Mother" is often misinterpreted by modern readers. Mother is not challenging her role as

Ireland Famine

  • 1. Ireland Famine Another topic that Nicholson similarly accounts for is the sheer number of beggars. So many people were out of work, begging was their last resort in an effort to survive for as long as possible. Nicholson writes that at certain times, she was fearful of entering certain shops. Not because of she thought she would be robbed, though Nicholson does draw attention to the increased violence in Ireland; "...yet they [the Irish] can plunder and rob; and these crimes are multiplying and will multiply till a new state of things places them in a different condition." 1No, her main fear was seeing the agony displayed in the eyes of those in such a state of hunger. She describes the beggars falling to their knees, their hands clasped, and glaring eyes... She continues to explain that it took months for the rich to actually believe that the poor were not just reveling in deceit and taking advantage of the rich, the poor were truly poor.4 Evidently though, the famine spread and its effects began to touch more than just the poor. Nicholson first described the fall of Ireland like an avalanche; she later says, "the pestilence followed the famine and, the entire country seemed to be sinking into the vortex, and a knowledge of Ireland was gaining by all classes of people, both in and out of the country."5 I would not have imagined that it would have taken months for the famine to be taken seriously by those in the upper class, simply because the lower class was so much more apparent. I think this type of attitude can fall into two possible categories: The rich were either stubbornly ignorant, or similarly to Lysaght's thought that they were merely in denial and reluctant to accept the crisis at hand to its ... City of Santa Monica, the defendant city enacted a solicitation ordinance, whose purpose was to impose reasonable place and manner limitations on solicitation, in order to protect the general public from abusive solicitations. Doucette, 955 F. Supp. at 1201. The ordinance prohibited "requests made in person seeking an immediate donation of money or other items of value" in areas including bus stops, public transportation vehicles or facilities, public parking lots or structures, outdoor dining areas, and within fifty feet of automated teller machines. Loper v. N.Y.C. Police Dep't, 999 F.2d 699, 701 (2d Cir. 1993). The statute stated "A person is guilty of loitering when he . . . loiters, remains or wanders about in a public place for the purpose of begging . . . ." Id. The defendants argued that begging had "no expressive element protected by the First Amendment," and that even if it did, the city polices interest outweighed the plaintiff's interest, as it addressed "the evils associated with begging on the streets of New York City." Id. The defendants further contended that residents were intimidated and local businesses suffered, as panhandlers were said to station themselves in front of banks, bus stops, automated teller machines and parking lots. Id. The court held, that even if the state was considered to have a compelling interest in thwarting the evils sometimes associated with begging, a statute that totally prohibits begging in all public places cannot be considered narrowly tailored to achieve such an end. Id. at 705. The court reasoned that the total prohibition on begging in the city streets served to silence both speech and expressive conduct. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Rural Beggars In The Ballet Class By Edgar Degas are going onto the field after the harvest and picking up the leftovers of corn. They are a type of rural beggars in an old traditional way. At the distance grain stack are seen piled up and the people who harvested them are bent over exhausted after harvesting all the crops. Large bundles of grain are visible in the background. In the foreground the three women are seen working almost in a solitary manner, collecting the leftovers to feed their families. On close observation it is seen that they have a white cloth tied around their hips which looks a bit heavy indicating they have been collecting these leftovers for a while. Yet this amount is very small compared to the enormous harvest in the background. A man sitting on a horse can be seen in the background which looks like he is supervising the work done by the harvesters. He pays no attention to these three women at all. Even though these women are some kind of beggars they still appear strong and well fed. The colour used on the women is contrasting to the background. They are bent and hence and below the horizon line. Their bent–over round shape somehow blends and adds a rhythm to the piles of harvest in the background. • 5. We Are Not Beggars : Film Analysis I could still remember few years ago, when I saw the young migrant workers wandered on the streets of my city, my feeling was abhorrent, repugnant. This negative impression was caused by their significant identities as physical workers: untidy appearances, odd smells, strong accents and low education. Even though they looked young, they were sophisticated and unctuous to work in the society. This emotion separated me away from them, so I had never considered the reasons and stories–difficulties–behind the surface of experienced social men, until I watch the documentary film We Are Not Beggars. The movie has recorded several poor rural children's daily lives, as street performers, to earn money in modern cities. The movie is released in 1997, when China is on the cusp of its economic boom, and their reasons for earning money are supporting the family's financial difficulty and going back to school. I'm surprised about their simple wishes, even though it seems unachievable at that time. As far as I know, in contemporary China, the government provides citizens the free but compulsory education from elementary school to middle school countrywide. Therefore, I wonder if those children will be happier if they live in today's society, based on the realized dream of going back school. Unfortunately, their situation won't be better, or could even be worse, if they live in today's society. Nowadays, the cheap labor cost has attracted both numbers of ... Salinger, is a novel in which the author creates much irony in the way he presents the loss of innocence or the fall from innocence in his main character, Holden Caulfield. While Holden clearly believes in protecting the innocence of children in society, he himself cannot seem to hang onto his own innocence. Throughout the novel Holden shows his love and protection for childhood innocence, the irony that he in fact himself may be losing his own childhood innocence mainly due to the responsibilities which he has taken on, and also shows that he may be more innocent than the reader first thinks as his simplified view of a complex world is much like an innocent child would see. • 8. Synopsis Of The Summer Spring Seasons That time of year is here. The weather has begun to change from the blistering July heat, to the cool evenings of September. There is no longer the need to flip channel after channel on the television to find something to watch since it is finally football season. The vivid green leaves are beginning to fade out and become different shades of brown, orange, and red. Leaves begin to fall from the upmost branches of the tree and float their way down to the ground. Kids gather around to collect the fallen leaves and jump into the enormous pile created by doing the chore of raking. Taste buds begin to water as the thought of warm cider and sweet pumpkin pie comes into the picture. The ladies begin to get out their favorite sweater, pair of jeans, and boots to wear out as the cooler nights approach. While every season has its own sense of wonder, autumn is the best one of them all. The paramount of this season is the plethora of activities that go on in a short amount of time. From the end of August to November, you can almost catch every high school kid on a Friday night in a stadium decked out in latest costume related to that game's student section theme. Whether it's a tacky tourist uniform or your American patriot, you can always see an eye–catching outfit. During the mid 15th century to the early 18th century almost half of Europe's total population could be considered poor and destitute. The attitudes of the clergy and the attitudes of the socially elite toward these people varied from pity to disgust, and their proposed solution to these problems differed. Some suggested helping all of the poor by giving them alms, some warned others to be careful of whom the money was given to and some people believed that being poor was a voluntary decision and if they wanted to get out of that situation, they do so without the help of others. In particular the clergy supported alms giving, government officials and the nobility advocated controlled giving, and some of the middle class were suspicious... This view of the poor can be debated because during the mid–1500s, a peasant revolt occurred and was violently suppressed when Martin Luther expressed his distain for the stupid peasants and their misinterpretation of his teachings. In 1625, cardinal Richelieu suggested that people should give discerningly to the poor because the vagabonds were taking advantage of the situation and were being helped out by the kindhearted. (d–8) As time progressed new ideas came into society. Instead of giving freely to the poor, they should be made to work for their money, as Emperor Charles V expressed in his imperial decree for Netherlands. • 10. The Friar 's A Friar Margaret Morrow Abel British Literature 27 October 2015 The Friar A friar is a simple man whose job was to beg from the poor and give to the Roman Catholic Church. The friar takes as much as one would need to live a humble life and offers the rest for the better of the church and poor. In the Roman Catholic Church a friar is considered a monk, and therefore expected to be fair and reserved. However, Chaucer describes the friar, or Hubert, in a sarcastic tone exposing his corrupt ways to only profiting himself from the poor. The Friar is a happy and cheerful person, with a pleasant personal demeanor. Although his position in the clergy limits him to receive his needs by begging within the area he resides, he lives a very lavish and unrestrained life "without cause or reason he does what he wants without regard to anyone else" (208–209). Of the four religious orders he has the smoothest manners and linguistic abilities. Because of his cheerful disposition and personality he is very well liked in his area and enjoyed performing weddings and spending time with the ladies; "the community was fond of him and especially with the more affluent and well to do landowners and woman" (212–216). He considered himself very good in the duty of confessional even better than those in the church that that is their sole purpose and duty. He was fully licensed and took the sins of his community with gentle and kind regard; "he freed them from their sin with compassion and removed all fear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I come from a country where myths and legends are usually scary; therefore, Latin American mythology is quite different from the Greek/Roman mythology. However, there is this one myth that has been passed down from generation to generation since the late 1800s, that somewhat follows the same path of Greek mythology. It tells the story of a Goddess called "Maria Lionza", she is considered one of the most important figures if not the most important one of Venezuela's indigenous past. Teleological ethics means an individual makes an ethical decision to bring about a positive end result for self, others, and our society. This is shown when John is talking about the beggar and says "bring about a good outcome of him". By saying this John is stating that he wants the man to to have a positive outcome of his life. The next concept is Operational motif of ethics. Operational motif of ethics means that an individual makes a decision based on fear of consequences. This concept is seen in when John starts Predicting what the bad things that the beggar could do by saying "if he's lying and was going to use the money for drugs or booze". This shows that John is more worried about what can go wrong then the fact that the beggar needs money for food. The last concept shown is the lesser of evils. Lesser of the evils means that out of two events one outweighs the other based on the one that seems to do the least amount of harm. • 18. St. Augustine Confessions In his autobiography Confessions, Saint Augustine tells the story of the day he walked to give a speech of undeserved praise towards emperor, and on the way Augustine spots a drunken beggar asking for change that would ultimately help shape Augustine's views of true happiness and life fulfillment. Saint Augustine made the realization that just as the beggar perceived themselves fulfilled by alcohol, he himself tried to find to find fulfillment through others looking highly upon him and praising him. However, much like the pleasure the beggar received from consuming alcohol, the pleasure Augustine found through others gratification was only temporal. Augustine theorized that the true fulfillment that he seeks can only come from living a life deemed worthy by God. This idea opposes the Grecian ideals found in Homer's The Odyssey . For the Greeks, a person strived to make a name for themselves for the sake of eternal glory. In essence, it was solely for self–pride that the Grecian warrior performed heroic deeds. They attributed their skill to themselves, almost trying to become equal to the gods they worshiped. This encounter with the beggar helped transform Augustine's view, causing him to stray away from performing deed solely for Earthly recognition, but instead make an eternal name for himself in the light of God. In his opening remarks with the beggar, Augustine notes "I was all hot for honours, money, marriage: and You made mock of my hotness" (Augustine 101). In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The attachment the beggars have on worldly desires is shown by their actions towards the coins. The painting is abstract and stylized as it shows the arhats being twice the size of the beggars. This is called the hierarchal scale because the artist wanted to portray the arhats as more grand and important compared to the beggars. Another abstract and stylized feature is that the arhats seem to be floating in a cloud and not physically on the ground. However, there are some components of naturalism. For example, the shading of the arhats clothing gives the effect of movement and flow as they gracefully stride down to earth. Arhats Giving Alms to Beggars is more abstract and stylized when compared to the typical naturalistic features of the Southern Song period. A good example is On a Mountain Path in Spring which shows an abundance of naturalism. As a result, it was an eye–opening to hear and visualize how savagely violent being on the battlefield truly is. One critical aspect of the text is the author's inclusion of similes in order to capture the essence of how heart wrenching it is to be a soldier. An example of this occurs in the beginning of the poem when the narrator is describes the other soldiers as, "Bent double, like old beggars under sacks," (1). In this example, the author shines light on how pitiful and hopeless they look from the effects of war. Additionally, the narrator presents a gruesome description of how much suffering another soldier faces after he is gassed in war by stating, "His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;" (20). • 28. Penelope's Recognition of Odysseus as a Beggar Essay example In Homer's epic The Odyssey, Odysseus returns to the island of Ithaka disguised as a beggar. He reveals his real identity to his son, Telemakhos, as well as a few others who he would need to help kill the suitors. However, Odysseus does not reveal himself to his wife, Penelope. She recognizes the beggar as her long lost husband and chooses not to unveil his true identity. Penelope does this because she realized that her husband would be in danger, in his current surroundings, if she was to reveal who he really was. Therefore she acts as if she does not know the beggar is Odysseus. However, it is portrayed subtly in the book that she does indeed know that the beggar is her husband. The very first piece of evidence Homer provides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the morning light you'll bathe him and anoint him so that he'll take his place beside Telemakhos feasting in hall."(P. 363 ln 375–380) This treatment of a mere beggar who showed up to her house, is very odd considering she has been trying to fight off over one hundred other guests for a number of years. Telemakhos even comments that such treatment of a guest is very much not in Penelope's character, "Nurse, dear nurse, how did you treat our guest? Had he a supper and a good bed? Has he lain uncared for still? My mother is like that, perverse for all her cleverness...?" (P. 379 ln146–149). This comment by Telemakhos shows that in the past Penelope has not been as hospitable toward guests. Therefore it is interesting that she would treat such a beggar with such care and compassion. The reason she does this is that she now has an increasing suspicion that the beggar is in fact her husband, Odysseus. One of the more telling pieces of evidence that Penelope knew Odysseus from the beginning, has to do with the bathing of Odysseus' feet in book 19. Even before that however, she makes comments about how the beggar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. The Beggar Maid : Stories Of Flo And Rose Train to Toronto In 1978, Alice Munro published a book of short stories titled "The Beggar Maid: Stories of Flo and Rose". "Wild Swans", one of the stories within the book, tells of Rose on a train to Toronto. A self–proclaimed minister of the United Church took a seat beside her and proceeded to sexually abuse her under the cover of a newspaper and a guise of sleep. The character, Rose, was one with a vivid imagination which had led people to believe she made up the entire incident in her mind. Yet after a careful reading of the story "Wild Swans", it became immediately apparent that Rose was indeed abused due to historical reference, lack of attraction, and signs of PTSD. Flo, Rose's stepmother, often recounted stories of things she had witnessed during her time working as a coffee shop waitress in Union Station. "Flo said to watch for White Slavers... [t]hey kept you prisoner in the White Slave place (to which you had been transported drugged and bound so you wouldn't even know where you were), until such a time as you were thoroughly degraded and in despair, your insides torn up by drunken men and invested with vile disease, your mind destroyed by drugs, your hair and teeth fallen out" (Munro 148–149). While it is true that Flo had a flair for the dramatics, she was not simply being paranoid when she warned Rose to "Watch out... for people dressed up as ministers. They were the worst. That disguise was commonly adopted by White Slavers, as well as those after your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Russian Beggar is a freestanding sculpture as well, of a female figure kneeling down, completely covered by a cloak except for an extended hand. • 33. Charles Baudelaire's To A Redheaded Beggar Girl In French poet Charles Baudelaire's Flowers of Evil, the theme of urban watching occurs for many times. The section Parisian Scenes demonstrates Baudelaire's particular interest in urban life. Being attentive to people and objects in the city, Baudelaire performs the urban spectatorship as his personal way of interacting with the world around him. In the poems Landscape, To a Redheaded Beggar Girl, and The Little Old Woman, Baudelaire observes, reacts to, and finally "paints" the scenes of modern life. Fifty years later, as an American Ashcan school artist, John Sloan (1871–1951) adopts Baudelaire's way of urban watching and further extends the idea to urban voyeurism. As a real painter, he portrays scenes of modern life in Sixth Avenue and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Baudelaire, Flowers of Evil, 120) Recalling achievements from famous women, Baudelaire draws a connection between the common urban women and what they might have done, imposing his own ideas on the old ladies. To him, it is more interesting to think about old ladies' pasts–what they have sacrificed and achieved– and how they have become old and forgotten. Even though they are no longer beautiful and were often despised, Baudelaire still claims and celebrates their beauty. In The Painter of Modern Life, Baudelaire explains why he has had a strong interest in urban watching, and he even creates a character Monsieur G who paints exactly from daily life observations. • 34. Summary Of The Beggar Maid By Alice Munro Accepting Abusive Relationships through Insecurities In the short story "The Beggar Maid", Alice Munro explores the opposing forces created from contrasting social identities between partners, which may later result in an abusive relationship. Social identity, in terms of social class, is an understanding of yourself and is based on where you are seen in a social hierarchy. Socioeconomic position is often a major contributing factor in abusive relationships. The term abuse tends to be correlated with physical actions, however, it is important to acknowledge that abuse can also be psychological. Coming from a small town and a lower–class family, Rose is able to attend university due to a scholarship she received. Once at university, Rose struggles with her social identity as a result of her upbringing. Although Patrick comes from a wealthy, upper class family, he is also experiencing a similar feeling of isolation. Unfulfilled expectations and pressure from Patrick's parents make him feel isolated and insecure and are ultimately causes of his nervous actions. The relationship between Patrick and Rose show two people from different ends of the social hierarchy. The insecurities that Rose and Patrick have from their respective social upbringing has caused them both to accept and take part in an abusive relationship. The difficult process of leaving an intimate partner is explored through a study and provides evidence as to why it is so difficult for Rose to leave Patrick. Another source suggests that Patrick's emotional insecurities that later lead to him being involved in an abusive relationship can be traced back to his childhood and the negative relationship that he had with his parents. Patrick's wealthy lifestyle deeply contrasts with Rose's, this is primarily seen through their overall outlook on each other's upbringing. Alice Munro clearly depicts the experience that both Patrick and Rose had while visiting each other's family. Patrick first made it clear to Rose that she should not "reveal to his parents that she had not paid for her own ticket." This triggered insecurities as the sense of inferiority Rose felt towards Patrick deepened. Her negative reaction to Patrick's hometown is support in proving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Penelope's Early Recognition of Odysseus When it comes to Penelope there is much controversy surrounding whether or not she recognized her husband Odysseus disguised as the beggar. I believe Penelope intuitively knew that Odysseus was the beggar but did not want to raise any red flags to the suitors, so she conjured up a clever way of ensuring that Odysseus could claim her "fair and square". This recognition may not have been immediate but at a certain point after conversing with the beggar I believe Penelope perceived that the beggar was her husband. There are many questions surrounding whether this is so, however there is quite a bit of evidence that can qualify this theory as plausible. Some question whether Odysseus was recognized by Penelope and if this helped to build up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This strategy works as he questions who has been fooling with his bed. I can certainly imagine Penelope mischievously smiling at his reaction. In book 19 when Penelope interrogates the beggar there are some indications that she has some suspicion about the beggar's identity. The fact that she questions him about the jewelry he is wearing because it resembles something that belongs to her husband might be an indication that she has a notion that the beggar might just be her husband. John B Vlahos expressed similar sentiment about the interview between Penelope and the beggar and her commenting on the jewelry. "Penelope suspects in book 19 that the beggar is her husband as the result of his answering, in great detail, her questions regarding the clothes and jewelry Odysseus wore when he left Ithaca twenty years earlier. Harsh goes on to suggest that, though she is not sure, based on her suspicion, she announces the contest with the bow. He believes that she later uses the so called "test of the bed" in book 23 to be absolutely sure of the stranger's identity" (Vlahos, 6). The fact that she is not only able to pour her heart out to the beggar but also make note of something like the jewelry he is wearing makes this conversation a bit more interesting. She recognizes the jewelry as resembling something belonging to Odysseus and finds it a little strange that this beggar could own such a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fundamental aspects of a culture are faith, values, and history. People that share a culture also share its beliefs and ways of life, which are different to others. Poetry is an effective way of describing and exploring a culture, and events within it, because certain aspects can be expressed with vivid descriptions, and imagery that would be unsuitable in other types of text. Some cultures have also used poetry as a form of storytelling, describing events that happened to their ancestors, or even themselves. Water is described as being sacred and is referred to as a 'sudden rush of fortune' when the pipe bursts, showering the residents with it's contents. The poem is also related to religion, with references to 'a kindly god' and the 'blessing' that it brings, and it is also based on poverty, community, and celebration. The poem opens with a strong statement in the first line. 'The skin cracks like a pod'. This uses a simile to describes the hard, dirty, dusty ground cracking open from lack of water, by comparing it to the very different image of a ripe, luscious green pea pod splitting open to reveal its moist, juicy contents. Onomatopoeia is used in 'crack' to emphasise the meaning and make the descriptions seem real. The second line, 'There is never enough water' tells the reader that it is obviously in a place of poverty, or where the weather is always very hot. The second stanza has a very different tone to the direct, strong opening. It is soft, and gentle and describes 'the small splash' of water which is so rare to the town and community within it. The metaphor in lines 4–6 describes the water's 'echo in a tin mug' as sounding like 'the voice of a kindly god', this helps the reader to visualise small drops of water splashing into a mug, producing a sound ... Comparing the Attitudes Towards Love and Relationships in The Beggar Woman by William King and To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell In this essay I will be comparing two poems, The Beggar Woman and To His Coy Mistress. I will be looking at how the themes of love and relationships are dealt with. I will also be looking at the historical context of the poems. Firstly in The Beggar Woman, written around 1663 to 1712, by William King. The story within the poem is about a gentleman who, whilst he is out hunting, wants to do another kind of 'sport', i.e. looking for a woman to have sex with. He found a woman who was a beggar. He asked her if she wanted to have sex in the woods, and, to his delight, she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "A gentleman in hunting rode astray, More out of choice than that he lost his way: He let his company the hare pursue, For he himself had other game in view:" This quote shows that he was chasing a woman and that he is not looking for anything more than sex. He just wants a bit of fun like any sport would give him. When reading the poems they create images of what is happening are created. In The Beggar Woman, William King does not use any similes or metaphors. I think this is because he needs to keep things simple for his audience. When he wrote it, he relied on his descriptive words to create a mental picture for the reader. For example, "mounts the infant with a gentle toss upon her generous friend, and like a cross, the sheet she with a dextrous motion winds" and "her cheeks were fresh and linen clean." When reading this line, you can imagine her cheeks; they are smooth, rosy, red, beaming cheeks. Both these quotes make you 'see' an image created by his cleverly written words. In To His Coy Mistress,Andrew Marvell does use metaphors and similes because he thinks the audience expects them as they are upper class. Some examples of the imagery created by metaphors and similes are "vegetable love," which is a metaphor; "times' winged chariot" and "his slow chapped

  • 40. The Revolt Of Mother By Mary E. Wilkins Even in the 21st century, there is still a lingering idea that women strictly belong in the home. This can be attributed to both the continuous, though evolved, embrace of the Cult of Domesticity and natural law. In the eighteenth century the Cult of Domesticity was embraced and challenged by many women, as it is today. "The Revolt of Mother" by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman is a literary example that reinforces the idea of the Cult of Domesticity by showing the reader the boundaries between genders and the power, however limited, that a woman has. In contrast, Kate Chopin's "The Story of An Hour", shows the constraints that gender roles put on a woman. Chopin's story challenges the Cult of Domesticity by using the character's internal dialogue to show that this was not the life she pictured. The Cult of Domesticity can be tied to other themes, such as the burden of motherhood, as in "I Stand Here Ironing" by Tillie Olsen. The home and the children were all under control of the woman of the house, and though it sometimes feels like a burden, it is the woman's obligation. Olsen did not fully accept nor fully condemn the Cult of Domesticity; she simply presented it as the way of life. By using the main character's internal monologues and their actions to control, or not control, their domains, each of these authors presents their view on the Cult of Domesticity. Wilkin's story, "The Revolt of Mother" is often misinterpreted by modern readers. Mother is not challenging her role as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
