Essay about Biography of Rachel Carson
Biography of Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson is considered one of America's finest science and nature writers. She is best known for her 1962 book, Silent Spring, which is often
credited with beginning the environmental movement in the United States. The book focussed on the uncontrolled and often indiscriminate use of
pesticides, especially dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (commonly known as DDT), and the irreparable environmental damage caused by these
chemicals. The public outcry Carson generated by the book motivated the U.S. Senate to form a committee to investigate pesticide use. Her eloquent
testimony before the committee altered the views of many government officials and helped lead to the creation of the Environmental Protection ... Show

Carson planned to pursue a career as a writer when she received a four–year scholarship in 1925 from the Pennsylvania College for Women, now
Chatham College, in Pittsburgh. Here she fell under the influence of Mary Scott Skinker, whose freshman biology course altered her career plans.
In the middle of her junior year, Carson switched her major from English to zoology, and in 1928 she graduated magnum cum laude."Biology has
given me something to write about," she wrote to a friend, as quoted in Carnegie magazine. "I will try in my writing to make animals in the woods or
waters, where they live, as alive to others as they are to me."
With Skinker's help, Carson obtained first a summer fellowship at the Marine Biology Laboratory at Woods Hole in Massachusetts and then a
one–year scholarship from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. While at Woods Hole over the summer, she saw the ocean for the first time and
encountered her first exotic sea creatures, including sea anemones and sea urchins. At Johns Hopkins, she studied zoology and genetics. Graduate
school did not proceed smoothly; she encountered financial problems and experimental difficulties but eventually managed to finish her highly detailed
master's dissertation, "The Development of the Pronephoros during the Embryonic and Early Larval Life of the Catfish." In June 1932, she received
her master's degree.
Carson was entering the job market at the height of the Great Depression. Her parents

Against Mandatory Vaccines
Vaccines are known for preventing disease, but could they be more dangerous than you know? Ever since the creation of vaccines people have been
arguing over whether their risks outweigh the benefits. Supporters of vaccines believe that vaccines are safer than natural immunization and that the
approval process will eliminate all major side effects before it is released to the public. Advocates ofvaccination think that vaccines are still not safe,
nor humane. They also believe that mandatory vaccines infringe upon the freedom of people's bodies. It is also largely disputed whether vaccines
cause autism or not. While vaccines are considered safe by many, others believe that there is more to vaccines than what we believe.

Immunization through vaccines produces the same immunity as natural infections without having to withstand the disease itself. Some vaccines even
offer a better response than contracting the disease ("The Benefits of Vaccine"). The Chickenpox vaccine has been studied a lot involving the
side–effects in comparison to those of contracting the disease. A child has a .25 percent chance of being hospitalized after catching chickenpox while
they would have a .05 percent chance of minor infection after the vaccine . While death rarely occurs from either form of immunization, it was far
more likely to occur from the infection rather than the vaccine. Of course, the risk is extremely small in both instances, but the slight edge of
chickenpox is scary enough for most parents to vaccinate their children. Shingles is something that many people are scared of contracting as they get
older. Although the chickenpox vaccine has not been available for long enough to see how many vaccinated people develop shingles at any point in
their lives, the contraction of shingles in children post–vaccine has been studied. Shingles is 39 percent less likely to occur in children or teens who
were vaccinated than those who naturally transmitted the disease. (Moyer, Melinda Wenner). Chickenpox is just one example of a vaccine being safer
than the natural infection. Although small, the difference in risk between the two ways of immunization is often plenty to encourage parents to
vaccinate their

investigate the company's sudden collapse in early 2007. Subprime Lending: A Historical Perspective Like all businesses, mortgage companies
struggle to achieve a proper balance be– tween "risk" and "return" in their operations. The principal risk historically faced by mortgage lenders is the
possibility that their clients will be unable or unwilling to pay the principal and interest on their mortgage loans. Prior to the 1980s, individuals who
were poor credit risks effectively had only two choices for obtaining a mortgage to purchase a home. Those alternatives were ob– taining a home loan
insured by either the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) or the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Borrowers with good credit histories, so
–
called prime borrowers, would typically seek financing for a new loan directly from a bank, savings and loan, or other financial institutions. The
deregulation of the lending industry beginning in the 1980s made it much easier for subprime borrowers to obtain mortgage loans to finance the
purchase of a new home. The Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act of 1980 did away with restrictions that imposed a ceiling
on the interest rates lending institutions could charge on new

Essay on "Contact": a Critical Review of Bias
In 1997, Carl Sagan's science fiction novel Contact was finally adapted to film by director Robert Zemeckis. Although originally written as a film in
1980 by Sagan and his wife Ann Druyen, production proved to be troublesome leading Sagan to publish Contact as a novel in 1985. The film portrays
humanity's first contact with extraterrestrials, but unlike most alien encounter stories that concentrate on the direct conflict of humans meeting aliens,
Contact focuses on humanity's cultural struggles when it encounters uncertain extraterrestrial events. Sagan tries to depict these struggles as
realistically as he can by incorporating characters that support a variety of differing viewpoints towards faith and the supernatural. Despite his attempt...

Her discovery resonates excitedly across the globe amidst speculation that the signal is possibly a message from God. Before Ellie can continue her
research, the United States government invades her project, suppresses its findings and appoints a government scientist, Drumlin, to head the operation.
A third part to the signal is discovered resulting in over 60,000 data sheets but the government's scientists fail to decode them. Ellie is contacted by
Hadden, a billionaire who previously sponsored her SETI research, and he reveals that he too has the data sheets and that he has discovered the data
sheets line up when arranged three–dimensionally to form schematics for a gargantuan machine with spinning rings that is expected to send a single
human pod to Vega. The project to build this machine becomes an international affair, and despite much religious moral opposition it receives
funding and guidance from all corners of the globe. Due to "95%" of the world believing in God or another higher power and Ellie's lack of religious
faith, the candidate selection panel decides Drumlin should be Earth's ambassador. However, right as the pod is about to be launched a fanatical
Christian, Joseph, suicide–bombs the machine, killing Drumlin in the process. Ellie is contacted once more by Hadden who reveals that he has
privately built a duplicate machine in Japan and that he wishes for Ellie to go, which she gladly accepts. Ellie's wormhole voyage is reminiscent

Essay on Magnetic Water and Treatment: Myth or Magic?
It is important that everyone know of the need to improve our energy and water savings and assist in reducing the use of electricity, water, and
non–renewable fuel sources. There are a number of non–chemical, non–mechanical water treatment technologies. Many of these are known by names
such as electronic, magnetic, electrostatic, electromagnetic, and AC induction. The history of these devices goes back to at least 1952. Claims for and
against the effectiveness of such systems have a long history. One would think that if these types of systems were truly effective, then the knowledge
of their successful deployment would be common place in the industry. In September 2001 the US Army Corps of Engineers (COE) published

those instances offered by Zeta Rod. In reviewing figure 7 on page 19 of the COE report, the particles are shown as positively charged, the vessel
wall is positively charged. It is not clear where the negatively charged particles are located. There are more negative charges shown on the inside of
the particles. But there is no explanation of how the inside of the particles became negatively charged. Even if the particles became positively
charged as they passed close to the electrode, there is no explanation as to why the particles would remain charged after moving away from the near
electromagnetic field of the electrode. On page 19 the power consumption is listed as less than 5 watts, a small amount of electrical power considering
the significant benefits provided. How these effects are brought about with the

Summary : ' Ghosts '
In a study done in 2011, 34% of Americans believed in the existence of ghosts, 56% thought 'ghosts' were spirits of the dead, and 71% believed
they had had a paranormal experience at least once before (LiveScience). The stories are infamous: Bloody Mary, vanishing hitchhikers, stories of
chairs and lamps being flung about by an unseen force; we've heard them since childhood. It has been wondered why we, as humans, love the feeling
of being scared so much. In reality, the answer is simple: when we're scared, the brain sends signals to our body to release adrenaline, which aids our
'fight or flight' response–this is the natural instinct to either fight off or flee from something that may prove dangerous. When we're scared by these
'ghosties, ghoulies, and long–leggedy beasties'–whether in the form of a scary movie, haunted house, you name it–that adrenaline is still released in
instinct; the catch is that we know we're safe, as it's only a simulation. Basically, we're given a safe adrenaline rush. So what about ghosts? There are
countless claims, horrifying to say the least, of encounters with malevolent forces. Why do we so desperately want to believe in something that could
potentially do us such great harm? Are these claims even plausible? These questions are posed for three reasons, depending on the inquirer: to provide
security in the idea that there's an afterlife, to provide security in the effectiveness of today's scientific studies, and to provide security in the

Bill Nye: A Tragic Hero
The definition of the word honor is high respect for someone. My definition of honor is someone who did something very important and should
be respected. On November 17, 1955, in Washington D.C. William Sanford Nye was born. His mother, Jacqueline, was a codebreaker in World
War Two. His father, Edwin Darby was a World War Two veteran, he was a sundial buff. This ties in later with William's creation. Also, when his
father was serving, he was a prisoner of a Japanese war camp for a period of time. After William attended the schools, Lafayette Elementary and
Alice Deal Junior High, he graduated in 1973. Then, he attended Carl Sagan for four years, after he took engineering classes at Cornell University.
He worked for Boeing in Seattle by taking part in training films. William Nye, also known as "Bill Nye the Science Guy," got his nickname by
correcting the show host for "Almost Live's" pronunciation for saying "jigowatt" but needing to say "gigawatt." When The host replied, "Who do you
think you are–Bill Nye the Science Guy?" this is how his nickname came to be. In 1991–1993 he was in parts of Back to the Future, Then, in 1993 he
first aired his show, "Bill Nye the Science Guy," until 1998. The show was aimed to educate young students but was a... Show more content on

These claims on banks can act as money because they are negotiable or repayable on demand, and hence valued at par. They are effectively
transferable by mere delivery, in the case of banknotes, or by drawing a cheque that the payee may bank or cash. 2. Netting and settlement of payments
– banks act as both collection and paying agents for customers, participating in interbank clearing and settlement systems to collect, present, be
presented with, and pay payment instruments. This enables banks to economies on reserves held for settlement of payments, since inward and outward
payments offset each other. It also enables the offsetting of payment flows between geographical areas, reducing the cost of settlement between them. 3.
Credit intermediation – banks borrow and lend back–to–back on their own account as middle men. 4. Credit quality improvement – banks lend money
to ordinary commercial and personal borrowers (ordinary credit quality), but are high quality borrowers. The improvement comes from diversification
of the bank's assets and capital which provides a buffer to absorb losses without defaulting on its obligations. However, banknotes and deposits are
generally unsecured; if the bank gets into difficulty and pledges assets as security, to raise the funding it needs to continue to operate, this puts the note
holders and depositors in an economically subordinated position.

Longtime stalwarts of the nation's financial services industry that fell victim to that turmoil included Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and Merrill Lynch.
In September 2008, the federal government assumed control of the Federal Na– tional Mortgage Association and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage
Company, two "government–sponsored" but publicly owned companies better known as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, respectively. At the time, the
two organizations owned or guaranteed nearly one–half of the approximately $12 trillion of home mortgages in the United States. For decades, the
federal government had used Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to create an orderly and liquid market for homeowner mortgages, but the enormous losses
each suffered in 2007 and 2008 undercut that role and forced the U.S. Department of the Treasury to take over their operations.
Angry investors lashed out at a wide range of parties who they believed bore some measure of responsibility for the massive financial crisis. Those
parties included the major subprime mortgage lenders in the United States, such as New Century, and the politicians, regulatory authorities, ratings

In 1923, contrary to League rules, the French and the Belgium's invaded the Ruhr – Germany's most important industrial zone. Within Europe, France
was seen as a senior League member – like Britain – and the anti–German feeling that was felt throughout Europe allowed both France and Belgium to
break their own rules as were introduced by the League. Here were two League members clearly breaking League rules and nothing was done
about it. For the League to enforce its will, it needed the support of its major backers in Europe, Britain and France. Yet France was one of the
invaders and Britain was a major supporter of her, so nothing was to be done about it. This incident was crucial, as these two countries were
involved in breaking their own rules and consequently set this example for others in future years. c) The Geneva Protocol Another clear failure was
the Geneva Protocol in 1924, which said that if two members were in dispute they would have to ask the League to sort out the conflict and
afterwards accept the council's decision. Before the Protocol could be signed a new conservative government appeared in Britain and refused to sign
it, as it feared that Britain would be forced to agree to something that was not in its own interests. The Protocol, which was made to strengthen the
League, ended up weakening it and, once again showing how countries were only worried about their problems and not in solving the ones of other
countries. d)

According to Wikipedia paranormal events are, "events that can not readily be explained by the range of normal experience or scientific explanation."
Paranormal events are very fascinating and can appear as though there is nothing that can explain such rare phenomena. As a kid I sometimes would
watch shows that would discuss all sorts of paranormal events from ghost sightings, big foot, the Loch Ness monster, UFO sightings, and even alien
abductions in some instances. These stories really intrigued me because they were so mysterious. However, one thing I noticed about all those shows
is that there was not any tangible evidence in any paranormal event to support their claim. Instead there was usually just an eye witness who would

Aliens are no doubt a hot topic for discussion today in our world. There are an abundance of television shows discussing various eye witness
testimonies of what they claimed to be a UFO. A lot of times people who claim to see a UFO in the sky say they saw flashing lights in the sky that
resembles a flying saucer. Or in other instances there are flashing lights that seem to move quickly, then rapidly disappear. There even may be
vague photographs of an alleged UFO. In most of these instances, there really is no tangible evidence other than an eye witness. We already know
people are very easily misled. There have been numerous studies on our brains that indicate that we are in fact naturally gullible. Our brains are so
powerful that it can trick us into seeing things that are not really there. In the case of UFO photographs, it is extremely easy to manipulate a
photograph to appear as something else with the use of programs such as Photoshop. But even back before Photoshop and image editing programs,
there are tons of photographs that are faked to look like flying saucers because it is so easy. I have seen pictures of what appeared to be a flying
saucer, but it was actually just a close up picture of a cottage cheese container on top of an aluminum plate. To an outside observer it seemed so real,

The next day President John F. Kennedy was informed of the discovery and the President formed a group of twelve advisors to plan and handle the
crisis. The advisors met for seven days to plan a strategy on how to handle the crisis and on October 22, 1962, President Kennedy revealed the crisis

The next change was the change in group atmosphere. The sessions would be devoted to open and frank discussion and the usual rules of protocol
were to be suspended (Janis, 1982). A formal agenda was not followed during the sessions (Janis, 1982). Outside experts were invited to the sessions
to give their views and were questioned about their conclusions (Janis, 1982). New advisors were brought in from time to time as visitors, and
members of the group would ask these visitors for input during their discussions (Janis, 1982). The third change was the added meetings of subgroups.
The Executive Committee was broken into two subgroups to facilitate critical thinking (Janis, 1982). The subgroups would meet separately to come up
with a policy decision and would then come back together as one to debate and cross–examine each other's decisions (Janis, 1982). The last change was
the leaderless sessions. President Kennedy would deliberately be absent from the meetings, particularly in the beginning, to avoid influence on his
advisors (Janis, 1982). When the President was absent from the meetings either Robert Kennedy or Secretary of State Dean Rusk would chair the
meetings and were also instructed to not try to direct the group in decisions (Janis, 1982). The

section 4: accounting fraud and auditor legal liability
USE OF CASE
This case vividly illustrates the important role of trust, reputation, and confidence in corporate America, since the fall of both Enron and Andersen
resulted from the loss of these critical elements. Because the Enron/Andersen debacle involves one of the largest bankruptcies and perhaps the single
most significant audit failure in U.S. history, the level of student interest in this case is high. Thus, the case provides an excellent venue for discussion
of many different topics ranging from auditor independence to the nature and intent of financial accounting standards. This case is ideal for use as an
out–of–class written assignment or as a basis for class presentation and/or discussion. Either way, an in–class discussion of the issues is critical to
vividly highlight the lessons of this case. If the case is to be used for an in–class discussion, we recommend having students read it prior to the in–class
discussion, as the case is fairly lengthy. In class, students can meet in pairs or small groups to discuss and compare their conclusions. Once all students
have had an opportunity to share their ideas and arrive at a group consensus, the instructor can randomly call on individual students to share their
group's answers with the class. Randomly calling on individual students to share their

ualitative researchers typically rely on four methods for gathering information: (a) participating in the setting, (b) observing directly,
(c) interviewing in depth, and (d) analyzing documents and material culture. These form the core of their inquiry–the staples of the diet. Several
secondary and specialized methods of data collection supplement them. This chapter provides a brief discussion of the primary and the secondary
methods to be considered in designing a qualitative study.
This discussion does not replace the many excellent, detailed references on data collection (we refer to several at the end of this chapter). Its purpose

In this way, the researcher is able to discover the recurring patterns of behavior and relationships. After these patterns are identified and described
through early analysis of field notes, checklists become more appropriate and context–sensitive. Focused observation then is used at later stages of the
study, usually to see, for example, if analytic themes explain behavior and relationships over a long time or in a variety of settings. Observation is a
fundamental and highly important method in all qualitative inquiry. It is used to discover complex interactions in natural social settings. Even in
studies using in–depth interviews, observation plays an important role as the researcher notes the interviewee's body language and affect in addition to
her words. It is, however, a method that requires a great deal of the researcher. Discomfort, uncomfortable ethical dilemmas and even danger, the
difficulty of managing a relatively unobtrusive role, and the challenge of identifying the big picture while finely observing huge amounts of
fast–moving and complex behavior are just a few of the challenges.
Whether a researcher is simply observing from afar or finding a participant–observer role in the setting, some contexts may present dangers. Street
ethnography is a term that describes research settings which can be dangerous, either physically or emotionally, such as working with the police (as

Voodoo In American Culture
Throughout history, Americans have grown up with different beliefs on what a zombie is. According to webster.com, "a zombie is a will
–less and
speechless human (as in the West Indian voodoo beliefs and in fictional stories) held to have died and been supernaturally reanimated." The idea of
zombies was introduced to mainstream western culture in 1929 when W. B. Seabrook wrote The Magic Island. This book detailed his observations of
life in Haiti, including the practice of voodoo. Zombies are part of the voodoo religion, although only of a small division, referred to as the "cult of the
dead." The practitioners of conventional voodoo typically wanted nothing to do with these people who practiced necromancy, according to Seabrook.
Necromancy is the practice of magic involving the communication with the dead. Nonetheless, in western culture the ideas of voodoo and zombies
became intricately linked. According to CSI, The Committee Skeptical for Inquiries, states that "the zombie legends portrayed in movies such as
Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later follow a similar pattern to the vampire legends. Once you are bitten by zombies, while you may manage to
escape immediate death, you will eventually die and turn into a zombie, yourself." There is a story of a young school boy from Haiti named
Wilfred Doricent who became terribly ill. He experienced dramatic convulsions, his body had swelled enormously, and his eyes had turned yellow.
Eight days later, Wilfred appeared to have died. This was confirmed by not only the family and family friends present, but also by the local medical
doctor who could detect no vital signs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Maxine Waters: Raising consciousness, not money
As one of the most powerful African American women in American politics today, Maxine Waters yields respect from both her allies and adversaries.

serve her constituency, to fight their struggles, to raise consciousness regarding the state of Americansociety today, and to lend her constituency hope.

and her constituency, America's minorities, particularly African Americans, with such force that the blow, be it the pain, the social inequality, the
outright disrespect for humanity that blacks in the country have experienced, may have inflicted a lifelong scar. The vast injustice that the African
American community has felt, since the moment the first African was placed in chains in brought to this country has been nothing but a travesty, that

Maxine Waters, that have led her to a life of commitment to her people, our nation's minorities, and to reforming our political system, our ideology, our
society.
There are many of us who are disillusioned by the American Political system, over the years we have become increasingly cynical, viewing
politicians as extensions of Corporate America, the good OLE boys from the South and the Eastern Elite. For such politicians, politics itself was a life

These are explained as follows: 1. Natural evidence is that which exists all around us. It is the most convincing evidence available. 2. Created evidence
requires effort to bring forth, e.g. an auditor 's own computation. To the extent that created evidence is equally simple and clear as natural evidence, it
may be equally compelling. 3. Rational argumentation may constitute evidence, e.g. when ideas or conditions follow logically from observed facts,
they seem to be true. In August 1980, the Auditing Standards Board (ASB) of the AICPA issued SAS No. 31: Evidential Matter (AICPA, 1980), and
defined evidential matter supporting the financial statements as consisting of ``the underlying accounting data and all corroborating information
available to the auditors ' '. Underlying accounting data includes the books of original entry, ledgers, and supporting work sheets. Corroborating
information includes such documentation as canceled checks, bank statements, sales invoices, vendors ' invoices, time cards, requisitions, purchase
orders, bills of lading, and shipping orders. It also includes evidence developed by the auditor, such as confirmations, observations, recalculations, and
reconciliations. In 1993, the American Accounting Association (AAA) defined auditing as:

Introduction of Marijuana
INTRODUCTION OF MARIJUANA INTO THE UNITED STATES The use of marijuana has been an active past time for thousands of years,
however, it did not reach the United States until around 1912. A wave of Mexican immigrants was entering the country in the effort to find work; with
them came marijuana. The use of marijuana was a normal custom among the Mexican people, but the White Americans in towns bordering Mexico
saw the use of this particular plant in a different light. Fueled with racism and frustration associated with the lack of work for the American people,
whites proclaimed that the smoking of marijuana gave the Mexicans super–human strength and transformed those who smoked it into violent
murderers. With the increase in rumors... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The negative propaganda eventually obtained a firm grasp on the minds of the American people, one by one, each state signed the Uniform State
Narcotic Law; Anslinger's method of exaggeration and manipulation went according plan. THE MARIJUANA STAMP ACT A frightened America
demanded that society be protected by the threat of marijuana, and sought relief within the power of the federal government. On June 14, 1937, the
Marijuana Tax Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt without any "public debate, scientific inquiry, or political objection" (Grass, 1999). The
act prohibited the possession of any marijuana unless one also possessed a marijuana tax stamp which was provided by the Department of Treasury,
however, in order to obtain a stamp act, one had to present to authorities his or her amount of marijuana, which was illegal in and of itself. Through this
extremely misleading form of legislation, the Department of Treasury effectively made marijuana possession illegal, and subsequently lead to hundreds
of arrests. LA GUARDIA VERSUS ANSLINGER The enactment of the Marijuana Stamp Act brought with it skepticism from many white Americans,
especially in the northeast region of the country. Those who opposed the Stamp Act believed that its implementation brought with it the return of
prohibition, an aspect of legislation they did not want to see in existence again (R.

Enron's physical market presence (owning the pipelines and charging a price for distribution that was proportional to the spot price of gas it might
purchase) helped mitigate the risk of a price increase of the gas it was purchasing.7
In response to the problem of getting producers to sign long–term contracts to supply gas, Enron started giving such producers cash up front instead of
payment over the life of the contracts. Enron then allowed the natural gas con tracts it devised–which were quite complex and variable, depending on
different pricing, capacity, and transportafion parameters–to be traded.
Enron Expands beyond Natural Gas
Enron decided to apply its gas trading model to other markets, branching out into electricity and other commodity markets, such as paper and chemicals.
To accomplish its expansion strategy, Enron sought to pursue an "asset–light" strategy.
Enron's goal was to achieve the advantages of a presence in the physical market without the disadvantages of huge fixed capital expenditures. For
example, in nat ural gas, Enron divested its assets related to pumping gas at the welll'iead or selling gas to customers, and then set out to acquire

Genetically Modified Organisms: The European Union vs. The United States
"By increasing the fertility of the land, it increases its abundance. The improvements of agriculture too introduce many sorts of vegetable foods, which,

Biotechnology in agriculture is a collection of scientific techniques used to improve or modify plants and microorganisms. Simplistic examples of
biotechnology are employing yeast, molds, and bacteria to create fermented foods such as milk and cheese, or crossbreeding plants in hope of
improving agriculture. The benefits of biotechnology in agriculture increased over the past few decades after scientists discovered that DNA
(deoxyribonucleic acid) is interchangeable among plants, animals and other organisms, alike. This allows scientists to invent new products through
both crossbreeding and a transfer of genes. Nearly any desirable trait found in nature can be transferred to a select organism. This process of
transferring DNA from one to another is referred to as genetic engineering (The United States Mission to the European Union:1999).
The genetic code is universal. Related species share a large number of genes, and on that assessment, GMOs were created. By incorporating genes from
an alternate plant species, an animal, bacterium, or virus, scientists can generate a new variety of organism. The most common varieties produced are
corn and soybeans resistant to pests and herbicides (Monsanto:1999).
Genetically engineered, or transgenic crops, are being grown and tested throughout the world. GMO technology grants the ability to add, subtract, alter

This takes us back to faith and a new adventure in physics and scientific method. Theory as applied to science is truth based on empirical evidence,
however the word theory is arbitrarily thrown around by the public as meaning "supposedly the truth" as is the phrase "physical evidence" as
physical also encompasses life. Hypocritically speaking, the modern world is built around the word "theory" and yet how many people have any
reality of this word and what they actually live by ? Public attitudes reflect controversy, conflict and confusion. Modern science is not only about
knowledge of the subject but is about the way of pursuing the subject or a "way of life theory" in many aspects as opposed to a religious way of
life. In an anthropic society such as the United States, human wellness is the terminology of the day. Believe or do not believe in modern science
and/or religion and you are still living a modern science "theory" mainly in the West. The United States is a modern science country that strives to

That which Is Accepted as Knowledge Todays Is Sometimes...
Human beings are much of a strange creature – many are attracted by what the majority of the
population accepts as "knowledge" and follow this path for many years without asking themselves the
reason why it is said to be that way. Others prefer completing their own "knowledge" by referring to an
entity which is thought to be superior to all the living on Earth. Then there are those which are open
minded, which stand out from the crowd, whose own curiosity takes the lead into finding out the
secrets of the world. What the question is implying, is the fact that sometimes a statement is said to be a
fact, a principle or the truth, entering our own classification of "knowledge". On the other hand, this

It was simply because they based
their idea on their present evidence; it was not just a matter of 'how it looks', as the Earth looks
chaotically bumpy, with hills, cliffs, mountains and much more. It was another way of looking at the
Earth which raised the idea of it being flat. This was by looking at the "curvature" of the planet's
surface over a considerable length; how much does the Earth deviate (on average) from perfect flatness.
The flat–Earth theory would make it seem that the surface doesn't deviate from flatness at all, that its
curvature is 0 per mile. The actual curvature of the Earth is on average 0.000126 per mile (being it not
perfectly spherical), a quantity very close to 0 per mile, and certainly not easily measured by the
equipment used by the ancients. The very small difference accounts for the fact to why it took so long
to pass from the flat Earth to the round Earth. It is also however essential not to discard this scientific
evidence as the Earth could not be mapped over large areas without extreme accuracy, and long
voyages can't be undertaken with any reasonable way of locating one's own position unless the Earth is
considered round rather than flat. Hence, although the flat–Earth theory is only slightly wrong in small
dimensions, it is enough to be discarded in favour of the round–Earth theory.
As previously stated, not all theories have an absolute 'right' or 'wrong', however, is there such an

Conquering Culture of Indecision
Conquering a Culture of Indecision Some people just can't make up their minds. The same goes for some companies. Leaders can eradicate indecision
by transforming the tone and content of everyday conversations at their organizations. by Ram Charan
Formerly on the faculties of Harvard Business School and Northwestern's Kellogg School, Ram Charan has advised top executives at companies like
GE, Ford, DuPont, EDS, and Pharmacia. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including What the CEO Wants You to Know: How Your
Company Really Works (Crown Business, 2001).
The job of the CEO, everyone knows, is to make decisions. And most of them do– countless times in the course of their tenures. But if those decisions

These mechanisms set the stage. Tightly linked and consistently practiced, they establish clear lines of accountability for reaching decisions and
executing them. Follow–through and feedback are the final steps in creating a decisive culture. Successful leaders use follow–through and honest
feedback to reward high achievers, coach those who are struggling, and redirect the behaviors of those blocking the organization's progress. In sum,
leaders can create a culture of decisive behavior through attention to their own dialogue, the careful design of social operating mechanisms, and
appropriate follow–through and feedback. It All Begins with Dialogue Studies of successful companies often focus on their products, business models,
or operational strengths: Microsoft's world–conquering Windows operating system, Dell's mass customization, Wal–Mart's logistical prowess. Yet
products and operational strengths aren't what really set the most successful organizations apart–they can all be rented or imitated. What can't be easily
duplicated are the decisive dialogues and robust operating mechanisms and their links to feedback and follow–through. These factors constitute an
organization's most enduring

SOLUTIONS FOR REVIEW CHECKPOINTS 1.1Business risk is the collective risk faced by a company that engages in business. It encompasses all
threats to and organization's goals and objectives. It includes the chance that customers will buy from competitors, that product lines will become
obsolete, that taxes will increase, that government contracts will be lost, or that employees will go on strike. 1.2The conditions of complexity,
remoteness, time–sensitivity, and consequences increase demands by outside users for relevant, reliable (useful) information. They cannot produce the

Professional Services. Virtually all work performed by CPAs is defined as "professional services" as long as it involves some element of judgment
based in education and experience. Improving the Quality of Information or its Context. The emphasis is on "information"–– CPAs' traditional stock in
trade. CPAs can enhance quality by assuring users about the reliability and relevance of information, and these two features are closely related to the
familiar credibility–lending products of attestation and audit services. "Context" is relevance in a different light. For assurance services, improving the
context of information refers to improving its usefulness when targeted to particular decision makers in the surroundings of particular decision
problems. For Decision Makers. They are the "consumers" for assurance services, and they personify the consumer focus of new and different
professional work. They may or may not be the "client" that pays the fee, and they may or may not be one of the parties to an assertion or other
information. The decision makers are the beneficiaries of the assurance services. 1.9Accountants record, classify, and summarize (report) a company's

Martin Luther King Research Paper
King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. (1899–1984) and Alberta Williams King
(1904–1974).[1] King 's legal name at birth was Michael King,[2] and his father was also born Michael King, but the elder King changed his and his
son 's names following a 1934 trip to Germany to attend the Fifth Baptist World Alliance Congress in Berlin. It was during this time he chose to be
called Martin Luther King in honor of the German reformer Martin Luther.[3][unreliable source?][4] King 's parents were both African–American, and
he also had Irish ancestry through his paternal great–grandfather.[5][6][7] King was a middle child, between an older sister, Willie Christine King, and

In his adolescent years, he initially felt resentment against whites due to the "racial humiliation" that he, his family, and his neighbors often had to
endure in the segregated South.[13] At the age of 12, shortly after his maternal grandmother died, King blamed himself and jumped out of a
second–story window, but survived.[14] King was skeptical of many of Christianity 's claims. At the age of 13, he denied the bodily resurrection of
Jesus during Sunday school.[15] From this point, he stated, "doubts began to spring forth unrelentingly."[16][15] However, he later concluded that
the Bible has "many profound truths which one cannot escape" and decided to enter the seminary.[15] Growing up in Atlanta, King attended Booker
T. Washington High School. He became known for his public speaking ability and was part of the school 's debate team.[17] King became the
youngest assistant manager of a newspaper delivery station for the Atlanta Journal in 1942 when he was 13.[18] During his junior year, he won first
prize in an oratorical contest sponsored by the Negro Elks Club in Dublin, Georgia. Returning home to Atlanta by bus, he and his teacher were
ordered by the driver to stand so that white passengers could sit down. King initially refused, but complied after his teacher told him that he would be
breaking the law if he did not submit. King said that during this incident, he was "the angriest I have ever been in my life."[17] A precocious student,

To conquer Afghanistan for its riches? Very unlikely. The 9/11 killed over 3000 people. The government would never kill so many people for a
slight chance at earning a lot of money. Was the collapse even scientifically possible? Now, let's look into this a little deeper..... Let's push aside all the

Essay About Biography Of Rachel Carson

  • 1. Essay about Biography of Rachel Carson Biography of Rachel Carson Rachel Carson is considered one of America's finest science and nature writers. She is best known for her 1962 book, Silent Spring, which is often credited with beginning the environmental movement in the United States. The book focussed on the uncontrolled and often indiscriminate use of pesticides, especially dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (commonly known as DDT), and the irreparable environmental damage caused by these chemicals. The public outcry Carson generated by the book motivated the U.S. Senate to form a committee to investigate pesticide use. Her eloquent testimony before the committee altered the views of many government officials and helped lead to the creation of the Environmental Protection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carson planned to pursue a career as a writer when she received a four–year scholarship in 1925 from the Pennsylvania College for Women, now Chatham College, in Pittsburgh. Here she fell under the influence of Mary Scott Skinker, whose freshman biology course altered her career plans. In the middle of her junior year, Carson switched her major from English to zoology, and in 1928 she graduated magnum cum laude."Biology has given me something to write about," she wrote to a friend, as quoted in Carnegie magazine. "I will try in my writing to make animals in the woods or waters, where they live, as alive to others as they are to me." With Skinker's help, Carson obtained first a summer fellowship at the Marine Biology Laboratory at Woods Hole in Massachusetts and then a one–year scholarship from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. While at Woods Hole over the summer, she saw the ocean for the first time and encountered her first exotic sea creatures, including sea anemones and sea urchins. At Johns Hopkins, she studied zoology and genetics. Graduate school did not proceed smoothly; she encountered financial problems and experimental difficulties but eventually managed to finish her highly detailed master's dissertation, "The Development of the Pronephoros during the Embryonic and Early Larval Life of the Catfish." In June 1932, she received her master's degree. Carson was entering the job market at the height of the Great Depression. Her parents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Against Mandatory Vaccines Vaccines are known for preventing disease, but could they be more dangerous than you know? Ever since the creation of vaccines people have been arguing over whether their risks outweigh the benefits. Supporters of vaccines believe that vaccines are safer than natural immunization and that the approval process will eliminate all major side effects before it is released to the public. Advocates ofvaccination think that vaccines are still not safe, nor humane. They also believe that mandatory vaccines infringe upon the freedom of people's bodies. It is also largely disputed whether vaccines cause autism or not. While vaccines are considered safe by many, others believe that there is more to vaccines than what we believe. Vaccines are substances... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Immunization through vaccines produces the same immunity as natural infections without having to withstand the disease itself. Some vaccines even offer a better response than contracting the disease ("The Benefits of Vaccine"). The Chickenpox vaccine has been studied a lot involving the side–effects in comparison to those of contracting the disease. A child has a .25 percent chance of being hospitalized after catching chickenpox while they would have a .05 percent chance of minor infection after the vaccine . While death rarely occurs from either form of immunization, it was far more likely to occur from the infection rather than the vaccine. Of course, the risk is extremely small in both instances, but the slight edge of chickenpox is scary enough for most parents to vaccinate their children. Shingles is something that many people are scared of contracting as they get older. Although the chickenpox vaccine has not been available for long enough to see how many vaccinated people develop shingles at any point in their lives, the contraction of shingles in children post–vaccine has been studied. Shingles is 39 percent less likely to occur in children or teens who were vaccinated than those who naturally transmitted the disease. (Moyer, Melinda Wenner). Chickenpox is just one example of a vaccine being safer than the natural infection. Although small, the difference in risk between the two ways of immunization is often plenty to encourage parents to vaccinate their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Subprime Lending: A Historical Perspective Like all businesses, mortgage companies struggle to achieve a proper balance be– tween "risk" and "return" in their operations. The principal risk historically faced by mortgage lenders is the possibility that their clients will be unable or unwilling to pay the principal and interest on their mortgage loans. Prior to the 1980s, individuals who were poor credit risks effectively had only two choices for obtaining a mortgage to purchase a home. Those alternatives were ob– taining a home loan insured by either the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) or the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Borrowers with good credit histories, so – called prime borrowers, would typically seek financing for a new loan directly from a bank, savings and loan, or other financial institutions. The deregulation of the lending industry beginning in the 1980s made it much easier for subprime borrowers to obtain mortgage loans to finance the purchase of a new home. The Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act of 1980 did away with restrictions that imposed a ceiling on the interest rates lending institutions could charge on new ... • 4. Essay on "Contact": a Critical Review of Bias In 1997, Carl Sagan's science fiction novel Contact was finally adapted to film by director Robert Zemeckis. Although originally written as a film in 1980 by Sagan and his wife Ann Druyen, production proved to be troublesome leading Sagan to publish Contact as a novel in 1985. The film portrays humanity's first contact with extraterrestrials, but unlike most alien encounter stories that concentrate on the direct conflict of humans meeting aliens, Contact focuses on humanity's cultural struggles when it encounters uncertain extraterrestrial events. Sagan tries to depict these struggles as realistically as he can by incorporating characters that support a variety of differing viewpoints towards faith and the supernatural. Despite his attempt... Ellie is contacted by Hadden, a billionaire who previously sponsored her SETI research, and he reveals that he too has the data sheets and that he has discovered the data sheets line up when arranged three–dimensionally to form schematics for a gargantuan machine with spinning rings that is expected to send a single human pod to Vega. The project to build this machine becomes an international affair, and despite much religious moral opposition it receives funding and guidance from all corners of the globe. Due to "95%" of the world believing in God or another higher power and Ellie's lack of religious faith, the candidate selection panel decides Drumlin should be Earth's ambassador. However, right as the pod is about to be launched a fanatical Christian, Joseph, suicide–bombs the machine, killing Drumlin in the process. • 8. Essay on Magnetic Water and Treatment: Myth or Magic? It is important that everyone know of the need to improve our energy and water savings and assist in reducing the use of electricity, water, and non–renewable fuel sources. There are a number of non–chemical, non–mechanical water treatment technologies. Many of these are known by names such as electronic, magnetic, electrostatic, electromagnetic, and AC induction. The history of these devices goes back to at least 1952. Claims for and against the effectiveness of such systems have a long history. One would think that if these types of systems were truly effective, then the knowledge of their successful deployment would be common place in the industry. In September 2001 the US Army Corps of Engineers (COE) published TR–01–63,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In reviewing figure 7 on page 19 of the COE report, the particles are shown as positively charged, the vessel wall is positively charged. It is not clear where the negatively charged particles are located. There are more negative charges shown on the inside of the particles. But there is no explanation of how the inside of the particles became negatively charged. Even if the particles became positively charged as they passed close to the electrode, there is no explanation as to why the particles would remain charged after moving away from the near electromagnetic field of the electrode. • 9. Summary : ' Ghosts ' In a study done in 2011, 34% of Americans believed in the existence of ghosts, 56% thought 'ghosts' were spirits of the dead, and 71% believed they had had a paranormal experience at least once before (LiveScience). The stories are infamous: Bloody Mary, vanishing hitchhikers, stories of chairs and lamps being flung about by an unseen force; we've heard them since childhood. It has been wondered why we, as humans, love the feeling of being scared so much. In reality, the answer is simple: when we're scared, the brain sends signals to our body to release adrenaline, which aids our 'fight or flight' response–this is the natural instinct to either fight off or flee from something that may prove dangerous. When we're scared by these 'ghosties, ghoulies, and long–leggedy beasties'–whether in the form of a scary movie, haunted house, you name it–that adrenaline is still released in instinct; the catch is that we know we're safe, as it's only a simulation. Basically, we're given a safe adrenaline rush. So what about ghosts? There are countless claims, horrifying to say the least, of encounters with malevolent forces. Why do we so desperately want to believe in something that could potentially do us such great harm? Are these claims even plausible? These questions are posed for three reasons, depending on the inquirer: to provide security in the idea that there's an afterlife, to provide security in the effectiveness of today's scientific studies, and to provide security in the ... On November 17, 1955, in Washington D.C. William Sanford Nye was born. His mother, Jacqueline, was a codebreaker in World War Two. His father, Edwin Darby was a World War Two veteran, he was a sundial buff. This ties in later with William's creation. Also, when his father was serving, he was a prisoner of a Japanese war camp for a period of time. After William attended the schools, Lafayette Elementary and Alice Deal Junior High, he graduated in 1973. Then, he attended Carl Sagan for four years, after he took engineering classes at Cornell University. He worked for Boeing in Seattle by taking part in training films. William Nye, also known as "Bill Nye the Science Guy," got his nickname by correcting the show host for "Almost Live's" pronunciation for saying "jigowatt" but needing to say "gigawatt." When The host replied, "Who do you think you are–Bill Nye the Science Guy?" this is how his nickname came to be. These claims on banks can act as money because they are negotiable or repayable on demand, and hence valued at par. They are effectively transferable by mere delivery, in the case of banknotes, or by drawing a cheque that the payee may bank or cash. 2. Netting and settlement of payments – banks act as both collection and paying agents for customers, participating in interbank clearing and settlement systems to collect, present, be presented with, and pay payment instruments. This enables banks to economies on reserves held for settlement of payments, since inward and outward payments offset each other. It also enables the offsetting of payment flows between geographical areas, reducing the cost of settlement between them. 3. Credit intermediation – banks borrow and lend back–to–back on their own account as middle men. 4. Credit quality improvement – banks lend money to ordinary commercial and personal borrowers (ordinary credit quality), but are high quality borrowers. The improvement comes from diversification of the bank's assets and capital which provides a buffer to absorb losses without defaulting on its obligations. However, banknotes and deposits are generally unsecured; if the bank gets into difficulty and pledges assets as security, to raise the funding it needs to continue to operate, this puts the note holders and depositors in an economically subordinated position. At the time, the two organizations owned or guaranteed nearly one–half of the approximately $12 trillion of home mortgages in the United States. For decades, the federal government had used Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to create an orderly and liquid market for homeowner mortgages, but the enormous losses each suffered in 2007 and 2008 undercut that role and forced the U.S. Department of the Treasury to take over their operations. Within Europe, France was seen as a senior League member – like Britain – and the anti–German feeling that was felt throughout Europe allowed both France and Belgium to break their own rules as were introduced by the League. Here were two League members clearly breaking League rules and nothing was done about it. For the League to enforce its will, it needed the support of its major backers in Europe, Britain and France. Yet France was one of the invaders and Britain was a major supporter of her, so nothing was to be done about it. This incident was crucial, as these two countries were involved in breaking their own rules and consequently set this example for others in future years. c) The Geneva Protocol Another clear failure was the Geneva Protocol in 1924, which said that if two members were in dispute they would have to ask the League to sort out the conflict and afterwards accept the council's decision. Before the Protocol could be signed a new conservative government appeared in Britain and refused to sign it, as it feared that Britain would be forced to agree to something that was not in its own interests. Or in other instances there are flashing lights that seem to move quickly, then rapidly disappear. There even may be vague photographs of an alleged UFO. In most of these instances, there really is no tangible evidence other than an eye witness. We already know people are very easily misled. New advisors were brought in from time to time as visitors, and members of the group would ask these visitors for input during their discussions (Janis, 1982). The third change was the added meetings of subgroups. The Executive Committee was broken into two subgroups to facilitate critical thinking (Janis, 1982). The subgroups would meet separately to come up with a policy decision and would then come back together as one to debate and cross–examine each other's decisions (Janis, 1982). The last change was the leaderless sessions. President Kennedy would deliberately be absent from the meetings, particularly in the beginning, to avoid influence on his advisors (Janis, 1982). Because the Enron/Andersen debacle involves one of the largest bankruptcies and perhaps the single most significant audit failure in U.S. history, the level of student interest in this case is high. Thus, the case provides an excellent venue for discussion of many different topics ranging from auditor independence to the nature and intent of financial accounting standards. This case is ideal for use as an out–of–class written assignment or as a basis for class presentation and/or discussion. Either way, an in–class discussion of the issues is critical to vividly highlight the lessons of this case. If the case is to be used for an in–class discussion, we recommend having students read it prior to the in–class discussion, as the case is fairly lengthy. In class, students can meet in pairs or small groups to discuss and compare their conclusions. • 36. Voodoo In American Culture Throughout history, Americans have grown up with different beliefs on what a zombie is. According to webster.com, "a zombie is a will –less and speechless human (as in the West Indian voodoo beliefs and in fictional stories) held to have died and been supernaturally reanimated." The idea of zombies was introduced to mainstream western culture in 1929 when W. B. Seabrook wrote The Magic Island. This book detailed his observations of life in Haiti, including the practice of voodoo. Zombies are part of the voodoo religion, although only of a small division, referred to as the "cult of the dead." The practitioners of conventional voodoo typically wanted nothing to do with these people who practiced necromancy, according to Seabrook. Necromancy is the practice of magic involving the communication with the dead. Nonetheless, in western culture the ideas of voodoo and zombies became intricately linked. According to CSI, The Committee Skeptical for Inquiries, states that "the zombie legends portrayed in movies such as Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later follow a similar pattern to the vampire legends. Once you are bitten by zombies, while you may manage to escape immediate death, you will eventually die and turn into a zombie, yourself." There is a story of a young school boy from Haiti named Wilfred Doricent who became terribly ill. He experienced dramatic convulsions, his body had swelled enormously, and his eyes had turned yellow. Eight days later, Wilfred appeared to have died. This was confirmed by not only the family and family friends present, but also by the local medical doctor who could detect no vital signs. ... A wave of Mexican immigrants was entering the country in the effort to find work; with them came marijuana. The use of marijuana was a normal custom among the Mexican people, but the White Americans in towns bordering Mexico saw the use of this particular plant in a different light. Fueled with racism and frustration associated with the lack of work for the American people, whites proclaimed that the smoking of marijuana gave the Mexicans super–human strength and transformed those who smoked it into violent murderers. Through this extremely misleading form of legislation, the Department of Treasury effectively made marijuana possession illegal, and subsequently lead to hundreds of arrests. Biotechnology in agriculture is a collection of scientific techniques used to improve or modify plants and microorganisms. Simplistic examples of biotechnology are employing yeast, molds, and bacteria to create fermented foods such as milk and cheese, or crossbreeding plants in hope of improving agriculture. The benefits of biotechnology in agriculture increased over the past few decades after scientists discovered that DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is interchangeable among plants, animals and other organisms, alike. This allows scientists to invent new products through both crossbreeding and a transfer of genes. Nearly any desirable trait found in nature can be transferred to a select organism. This process of transferring DNA from one to another is referred to as genetic engineering (The United States Mission to the European Union:1999). The genetic code is universal. Related species share a large number of genes, and on that assessment, GMOs were created. By incorporating genes from an alternate plant species, an animal, bacterium, or virus, scientists can generate a new variety of organism. The most common varieties produced are corn and soybeans resistant to pests and herbicides (Monsanto:1999). Genetically engineered, or transgenic crops, are being grown and tested throughout the world. GMO technology grants the ability to add, subtract, alter or exchange an
