Veteran Suicide
In the World the frequency of Suicide is high, about 1 every 40 seconds averaging about one–million each year. The top ten countries on the list for
highest suicides from highest to lowest are as follows: Greenland, South Korea, Lithuania, Guyana, Kazakhstan, Belarus, China, Slovenia, Hungary, and
Japan with the United Stated falling at number thirty–three on the list (How Many People Commit Suicide a Year).
According to AFSP.org; on average 44,193 Americans die from suicide each year and for every suicide there are 25 attempts and is also the 10th
leading cause of death each year in the United States; with firearm more likely to be the cause of death in a suicide than any other form of suicide.

By getting a veteran to talk about what they have experienced in the military is hard because they see and experience things that no human being
should every have to go through. Some of our veterans see and experience things on a deployment that no one should ever experience, some
people have no choice but to put a bullet in a child's head because they are strapped with a bomb and have to decide whose life is worth more the
child's life or the life of themselves and the fellow military members. Other people go through hazing of forms that our not seen on the news ever
unless it is so bad that it gets out in the open for the whole world to see, but otherwise it is not seen but the mental, emotional and sometimes
physical scaring can been seen in a hazing victim. There is a thing that people refer to as PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and to meet
people who come out of the military who have not gone through one of those two events who do not suffer from one form or another of PTSD is
rare. PTSD is a side effect from our loved ones see and experience in the military and to the older generations it is sometime know as shellshock. If
we want our loved ones back who served in the military then we need to invent a time machine to keep them from joining in the first

Mental Health Accommodations For Our Military Men And...
Are mental health accommodations for our military men and women sufficient? Soldiers are put through trying conditions when deployed. Many of
the men and women are sent to a foreign country away from their homes full of the people they love the most, who are spending their time with a
worry in the back of their mind if they will get the chance to hold, touch, or see their loved ones ever again. Often, the soldiers who do make it back
home to their families tend to develop some mental problems over their time away. Even though a majority of veterans has visible problems, a
widely–held number of veterans are very good at hiding the problems developed over the years. For the reason that, the number of soldiers with mental

Because it's is a government based company the media will not release any negative actions the VA has carried out.
Hook, Background, Thesis, Essay Map
The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs is not Always a Positive Business. The Veterans Affairs Department provides employments for full
– and
part–time psychiatrists and full– and part–time psychologists who work and collaborate with social workers, mental health nurses, counselors,
rehabilitation specialists, and other clinicians to make available a full range of mental health services for soldiers. (opposing viewpoints in context

partaking to almost all things military insights, I can personally express that the Veterans Affairs Department is not as valuable as the media portrays it
to be. Because it's is a government based company the media will not release any negative actions the VA has carried out. But then again, when you're
in the military you realize that the majority of the Veteran Affairs Department workers are very conceited to put their personal problems before their
patients' problems.

Overcoming Homeless Essay
In this paper, I will focus on the topic of why veterans are coming back homeless. Veterans are seen as a savior of the country they are risking their
lives for every day, so why is it that they are coming back from tours and service and ultimately ending up homeless? Since 2009 the United States
stated that in five years they would end veteran homeless, but the United States is still facing veteran homelessness in the year 2017. Though the
homeless rates of veterans have gone down since then, why are veterans still facing homelessness if so many resources are supposed to be available
for them. Is there more than meets the eye when it comes to homelessness especially with veterans, yes. Many things can attribute to this continuing
issue such as lack of assistances provided, mental illnesses, PTSD, lack or loss of support from being deployed, the use of drugs and alcohol as
coping strategies, and the economics.
Homelessness is something that many individuals in every country face on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
PTSD is a mental health problem that some individuals can develop after experiencing or witnessing a life–threatening event, such as combat, a natural
disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. It is normal for an individual to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after a
traumatic event. It may be hard to do normal activities, such as going to work, school, or spending time with people you care about. For some
individuals, PTSD symptoms may not start right away they may come and go over time. With PTSD, veterans may find it had to keep their support
groups such as family, friends and possible significant others close due to the symptoms of PTSD. Individuals can have a difficult time trying to get
back into a routine that has now changed whether they themselves are suffering from PTSD or individuals closest to those who are

An American Soldier
The epitome of an American is an American soldier. They fight for our freedom, sacrifice their time and families, and sometimes give their lives for
our country. The American soldier should be well compensated for all that they do, but putting a price on someone's sacrifice is complicated. Although
our veterans should be well taken care of, there are many situations and modifications that should be made to make veterans benefits appropriate to
each soldier. In the Letter to the Editor from Michael D. Helm, he states that our veterans are heroic and should receive their "small" payout for their
time, disabilities, and sacrifices. While there are veterans who deserve full compensation, what about the ones who take the system for granted,... Show

He was rated at thirty percent and received a $450 a month check a month, tax free. Why should he be able to receive compensation for an injury
that he benefited from in college? Why should someone who never defended our country in battle be able to file a claim after a substantial amount
of time? This same man was charged with the murder of his wife in April of 2014. His rating dropped down to ten percent and he will receive $130
month for life. Why should he receive anything? He is a convicted murderer? Do these standards live up to the American ideology of what a
soldier should be? This case is not the only case where veterans are allowed to take advantage of the system we have established. In the same
article, "VA Benefits are Fourth Rail", Zarembo states a case that I find astounding, "... a schizophrenic man spent 38 days in Air Force basic training
in 1975 before being discharged. He later served 10 years in prison for second–degree murder. In 2004, the VA deemed him 100% disabled and started
paying him about $3,000 a month. High disability ratings do not necessarily reflect serious impairment."(3) There are also websites that teach veterans
how to trick their psychologists. In "PTSD and the truth", Alan Zarembo states "In online forums, veterans trade tips on how to behave in their
disability evaluations. Common advice: Dress poorly and don 't shower, refuse to sit with your back to the door, and

Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs
The Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies (MCVARA) is a subcommittee under The Appropriations Committee. The
Appropriations Committee reviews and approves budget requests (funding legislation) from MCVARA. Once the funding legislation is reported to
and approved by the Senate, the Senate works with the House to have the legislation approved and passed by the beginning of the fiscal year which
falls on October 1st. The subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs primarily deals with bills that relate to the wide variety of
programs for Military members, retired and active duty, in the United States. The bills that they oversee help to provide... Show more content on

However as of more recent, the focus has been to cut spending and this in turn has affected most notably, Veterans Affairs (VA) and theirhealth
programs. According to the VA, "VA is charged with fulfilling President Lincoln's promise to care for those "who shall have borne the battle, and
for " their families and their survivors. To support this mission, the 2016 Budget provides $70.2 billion in discretionary funding for VA, a 7.9 percent
increase above the 2015 enacted level. In addition, the budget includes $3.2 billion in estimated medical care collections, for a total discretionary
budget authority of $73.5 billion (which includes $3.2 billion in Medical Care Collections) and $95.3 billion for VA's mandatory benefit programs."
This increase in budgetary spending can be deceiving as the VA is also seeing an increase in the amount of veterans claiming benefits. So although
there is a budgetary increase, it is not enough (a deficit) to fulfill all claims made by veterans and/or their families and therefore is causing the VA to
make cutbacks in both military construction efforts, but more importantly in medical benefits that veterans receive. For instance, improving veterans
access to medical care to include strengthening their benefits program is a matter of priority. As has been recently of subject in the news, wait times for
veterans has been extreme and inefficient, at times to the detriment of the health of veterans. Although the increase is aimed at providing more
physicians and improving the VA's "physical" infrastructure, the budgetary increase lacks the foresight to address the growing veteran population in
concurrence with the needed changes that are being proposed. In an article published in Military Times on

Informative Essay On Veterans
There are currently twenty two million Veterans in the United States of America. These are men and women who selflessly volunteered to serve in
our armed forces to protect our freedom knowing that one day that the cost of that may be there life. It takes a special kind of person to put your
life on the line to defend people's freedom and way of life that they have never even met and some won't appreciate and others will even hate them
for. Some of these men and women have been overseas for months and even years at a time where they learn and practice the skills taught to them
every day that were drilled into them at boot camp where endured intense training that a lot of people wouldn't even think of taking on. Once there

This combined with the fact that there military skills do not really transfer over well to civilian workforce. This causes many veterans to not being
able to find jobs because employers will not hire them because their resumes do not qualify them for the jobs. "The unemployment rate for veterans
who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001––a group referred to as Gulf War–era II veterans––declined by
1.8 percentage points over the year to 7.2 percent in 2014, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The jobless rate for all veterans, at 5.3
percent, also declined from a year earlier. In addition, 29 percent of Gulf War–era II veterans reported having a service–connected disability in August
2014, compared with 16 percent of all veterans ("Employment Situation of Veterans Summary" 1)" The veterans who d manage to find jobs do not
usually find good ones. This is not just older veterans who are struggling to find decent paying jobs "About 8 percent of veterans serving since
September 11, 2001 are paying more than half their income towards housing, placing them at a serious risk for homelessness. Experts recommend
spending no more than 36 percent of net income on housing costs (Wilson, James Simpson)". This means that even younger veterans who are still able
to do hard work are having trouble getting well–paying

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Essay
Why the Proper Treatment of Veterans with PTSD will Reduce the Rate of Suicides Soldiers who return home may not only have physical setbacks,
but are mentally traumatized from what they have witnessed while serving our country. Veterans are more prone to be diagnosed with PTSD due to the
combat they experience or witness on the field. Post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans has been prevalent for decades and there is still no
known treatment option that has been found entirely effective. Many Vietnam veterans who never sought treatment due to the nonexistent "support for
the troops" have been covering up their symptoms for approximately forty years. Countless soldiers return home without jobs and some feel like their

This may be due to the fact that veterans who served in the Vietnam war weren't respected by the majority of our country. When some Vietnam
veterans returned home they "...described being unwelcomed and unappreciated, aside from a select few people, and noted great difficulty when
attempting to reintegrate into the 'normal' civilian routines" (Desai et al.) The majority of the country was against the war towards the end due to the
financial aspects it took in order to join the war. When some veterans came home they had no one to talk to and minimal support. As a result, they felt
like they could not seek help in fear of being judged or looked at as weak. The Vietnam war "...was also the first time America failed to welcome its
veterans back as heroes. Many veterans were attacked personally by their fellow countrymen, who opposed the war" (Vietnam). As a result, numerous
Vietnam veterans are now seeking treatment due to the number of treatment options.
Many factors can lead a veteran with PTSD to consider or commit suicide. An average of twenty veterans commit suicide each day (Office of Public
and Intergovernmental Affairs). Not only is it personal pride, there is also a social stigma behind veterans needing support from others. This is
because society gives veterans a strong reputation leading them to feel humiliated if they need someone to lean on. Many veterans "...feel ashamed and

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Veterants
New York City is home to over between 200,000 veterans whom fought wars since Vietnam. The numbers have been increasing since the drawback of
troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Programs that service our veterans have been granted by the Department of Veterans Affairs to assist veterans. Since the
Wars began, issues arose in the veteran community like unemployment, mental health such as PTSD (post–traumatic stress disease), and veteran
without a home. Throughout the five boroughs of New York Citythe issues can be seen and the problems found here are not because of the instability
of the economy. It is because of the high cost of living and politics the City of New York.
One the problems facing veterans is the misconception to a large extent of mental health issues. The studies of post–traumatic stress disorder affects
over 15 percent of veterans returning from the Middle East and another 16 percent are diagnosed with something called TBI (traumatic brain injury).
Traumatic brain injury is usually cause by an IED (improvised explosive devices) during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom
against foreign enemies. PTSD (post–traumatic stress disorder) is normally caused by traumatic events like war in veterans who can't handle the stress
of seeing someone shot, blown to pieces, and friends in their arms dying. Reports of veterans still experiencing some symptoms of PTSD from the
Vietnam War and this issues is long term.

While the system is not perfect, and its failings have been widely discussed in the media, the VA does provide a significant healthcare benefit that

Why Corporations Should Not Hire Military Veterans
Military veterans have many characteristics that show good leadership and courage, which is what companies should be aspiring to have in their
employees. Instead, many corporations are purposely not hiring military veterans; resulting in thousands becoming homeless. Corporations are
discriminating against our soldiers and the government is not endeavoring to help these soldiers either. Companies automatically assume that vets
suffer from mental illnesses, are irrational and violent, and are uneducated and incompetent. Our government needs to establish more programs that
will benefit our soldiers such as: creating shelter homes; providing them with therapists to help them with newly developed mental disorders; and
allowing them to gain stability by giving them more job opportunities. There are numerous reasons as to why corporations are choosing to not hire
military veterans. There are two sets of reasons: one being the reasons that corporations tell the public and, two being what they truly mean but will
not announce freely to the public. In the article, "5 Reasons Why Employers Are Not Hiring Vets" by Lisa Nagorny and Dan Pick, student veterans at
Wharton's MBA for Executives program, Nagorny and Pick discuss the interviews they conducted with 87 individuals and 69 companies. At the end of

PTSD is a mental health condition many soldiers who were involved in combat experience. This condition is triggered by experiencing or
witnessing a traumatic event. The symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety, as well uncontrollable thoughts about the event; it's also
the number one cause of veteran suicide. A Vietnam War veteran named Burk, stated those who have had experience with applying for PTSD
benefits application said " you have to relive [the traumatic event], write it down and then deal with the bureaucracy. Most guys can't withstand
that" (qtd. 979). In history classes, one learns that battle in war can be a living hell on earth, that no one should have to experience. Veterans, who
have had gone to war and came home with a mental illness, have to dig deep into their nightmares they suppress to be able to file the claim. Even
though veterans are being forced to remember in painful memories, the claims are not always accepted. "In 2005, the VA sought to review 72,000
cases of claims for PTSD because it felt that 2.5% of them were fraudulent. The VA suspended the review after a sampling of 2100 were reviewed
with few discrepancies found" (English & Marlanda). VA agents rejected veterans' claim without knowing the painful experiences they had gone

Homelessness Among American Veterans Research
Homelessness Among American Veterans Research Paper An issue that has been around for decades which still remains in the United Sates today is
homelessness among veterans. Vanessa Turner has a story that needs to be heard by many. As a homeless veteran, Turner joined the U.S. military in
1997 and later, proudly advanced to the rank of a sergeant. In 2003, Turner suffered from a traumatic injury while serving in Iraq. In suffocating
130–degrees fahrenheit heat, Turner fell into a coma and nearly died of heart failure. Immediately, she was brought to the Walter Reed Army Medical
Center in Washington D.C., treated, and released with a pending medical discharge. After Turner's release, both her and her daughter had no residency
and no permanent health care plan. In attempt to make a stable living to sustain herself and her daughter, they often temporarily moved between family
to friends' apartments, never actually having a place to call home. In an effort to receive help from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center was very
frustrating; she was told she had to wait months simply to get medical attention. Again when Turner requested for her belongings to be shipped back
from her unit's base in Germany, they told her she had to obtain transportation to Germany at her own expense, which she was unable to do because of
the amount of money that it would cost, unfortunately resulting in not getting her property back. Vanessa Turner is just one of many homeless veterans

At the end of
their study, they concluded five main reasons on why employers do not hire veterans. Those reasons came down to being: skill translation; negative

Abstract
It ought to be evident at this point that destitute veterans are not being served well by any means. On the off chance that the destitute veterans were
legitimately looked after by our nation, the aggregate destitute populace would fall by more than forty percent over night. Destitute administrations
would then have adequate subsidizing to move huge numbers of whatever is left of the destitute off the roads into transitional lodging with
administrations that bring them again into the working populace. It would be a fantasy works out. If our nation would venture up to the plate,
vagrancy in our nation would be essentially disposed of. Vagrancy among veterans is a real issue inUnited States. There are projects and administrations
to help veterans, yet these endeavors are insufficient to viably address the emergency. This paper characterizes destitute veterans, analyzes their
conditions, distinguishes current projects that address the issue, presents contentions for business as usual, presents contentions against the norm, and
afterward closes with an ethical position.

One reason for this is due to the fact that many of these veterans reside in rural areas where it is difficult for them to obtain access to care due to
limited resources and the need to travel large distances for care (Helseth).
Access to Healthcare for Rural Veterans A large number of veterans with service related injuries live in rural areas due to the fact that residents in
rural communities are more likely to join military service then individuals from urban areas. 44% of recruits are from rural areas compared to 14%
from urban (Gale). Due to the higher rate of rural individuals joining the military, there is a higher rate of rural veterans needing medical care after
leaving the military. According to the VHA–ORH of the 22 million vets in the U.S, 5.3 million or 24% live in rural areas. 3.2 million of these rural
vets are registered with the Veterans Affairshealth care system, this accounts for 35% of total enrollees. Approximately 2.8 million VA patients are
affected by a service related injury with 1,027,000 or 36% of them coming from rural areas. Many of the vets living in rural areas do not get the help
they need and are entitled to due to barriers to healthcare with the main barrier being the distance to the nearest VHA facility. This can cause vets to

the need of the GI Bill in further providing student equity to student veterans. Scholars saw the important qualities that the GI Bill possess and
advocated for further services in assisting student veterans and their families in not only understanding their medical benefits but also create a

Essay On Homecoming Experience
People all over America will be celebrating our veterans for their service on November 11th. There will be numerous celebrations and thanks for the
people who fought for our freedom, but often we forget what it was like coming home from a war. Coming back from the war and reassimilating
into society can often times be just as challenging as fighting the war itself. There are so many factors that affect one's homecoming experience, such
as the supportiveness of the community or the trauma caused by the war. Everybody is different which means everybody's experiences are going to
differ. Leaving your home is definitely a difficult feat, and coming back is possibly even harder for some veterans. In an interview with Vietnam war
veteran, Karl Marlantes, some important points are brought up about the psychological effects war has on a veteran, but also some of the external
factors that affect someone's ability to cope with their actions. He tell's in his own words what it's like to come home from war and try to repress
all of your guilt and grief. He describes the guilt as a "wound of the soul" and makes a point of how soldiers experience mental health issues as well
as physical wounds. To help make this homecoming for veterans better, we should create a place for veterans to go to talk about what happened so
they can release their grief and move on, instead of letting it sit untouched until it comes to conscience and makes life a nightmare. Another goal for

"Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder; One of the Leading Causes of High Unemployment Rates among U.S. Veterans"
The newest face of Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has manifested itself regularly into action packed movies, public scrutiny, and negative
stereotypes by the media. The unfortunate truth surrounding PTSD is that employers are unenthusiastic about hiring veterans with these hidden
disabilities. Unemployment rates in the United States amongst post 9/11 veterans have significantly increased and employers consider the condition

In order to understand why leading companies view sufferers of the disorder as untrustworthy or undependable, we must understand the meaning of
PTSD. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, "PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or

Generally, these are veterans that fought in the Vietnam War, but with more recent wars there is a new face to veteran homelessness. A shift in
demographics is occurring "as troops return from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan... homeless veterans are increasingly younger, female, and heads
of households" (Veteran Homelessness). Veteran homelessness chronically affects such a broad group of people that a solution is imminent. It is no
longer the time to allow America's service men to wander the streets unsheltered. It is time to step up and finally put a stop to veteran homelessness.
There are intricate causes that compound and makes a person considered chronically homeless. There are homeless veterans that are stuck to live on the
streets for reasons that affect non–veterans as well. These include lack of a supportable income, healthcare, and affordable housing. More specifically,
there are complex factors that causes retired service men to be left on the streets. These causes are directly related to veteran homelessness. The most
influential factor that leaves veterans on the streets is the effects of mental illness and more specifically the effects that post–traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD) plays on the veteran; more than half of homeless veterans suffer from a serious mental illness (National Coalition for Homeless Veterans).
PTSD is a brain disorder that occurs after someone

Veteran Suicide

  • 1. Veteran Suicide In the World the frequency of Suicide is high, about 1 every 40 seconds averaging about one–million each year. The top ten countries on the list for highest suicides from highest to lowest are as follows: Greenland, South Korea, Lithuania, Guyana, Kazakhstan, Belarus, China, Slovenia, Hungary, and Japan with the United Stated falling at number thirty–three on the list (How Many People Commit Suicide a Year). According to AFSP.org; on average 44,193 Americans die from suicide each year and for every suicide there are 25 attempts and is also the 10th leading cause of death each year in the United States; with firearm more likely to be the cause of death in a suicide than any other form of suicide. By getting a veteran to talk about what they have experienced in the military is hard because they see and experience things that no human being should every have to go through. Some of our veterans see and experience things on a deployment that no one should ever experience, some people have no choice but to put a bullet in a child's head because they are strapped with a bomb and have to decide whose life is worth more the child's life or the life of themselves and the fellow military members. Other people go through hazing of forms that our not seen on the news ever unless it is so bad that it gets out in the open for the whole world to see, but otherwise it is not seen but the mental, emotional and sometimes physical scaring can been seen in a hazing victim. There is a thing that people refer to as PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and to meet people who come out of the military who have not gone through one of those two events who do not suffer from one form or another of PTSD is rare. PTSD is a side effect from our loved ones see and experience in the military and to the older generations it is sometime know as shellshock. • 2. Mental Health Accommodations For Our Military Men And... Are mental health accommodations for our military men and women sufficient? Soldiers are put through trying conditions when deployed. Many of the men and women are sent to a foreign country away from their homes full of the people they love the most, who are spending their time with a worry in the back of their mind if they will get the chance to hold, touch, or see their loved ones ever again. Often, the soldiers who do make it back home to their families tend to develop some mental problems over their time away. Even though a majority of veterans has visible problems, a widely–held number of veterans are very good at hiding the problems developed over the years. For the reason that, the number of soldiers with mental health problems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because it's is a government based company the media will not release any negative actions the VA has carried out. Hook, Background, Thesis, Essay Map The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs is not Always a Positive Business. The Veterans Affairs Department provides employments for full – and part–time psychiatrists and full– and part–time psychologists who work and collaborate with social workers, mental health nurses, counselors, rehabilitation specialists, and other clinicians to make available a full range of mental health services for soldiers. (opposing viewpoints in context 2008). However, does the VA hire mature professionals who place their patients' needs above their personal wants? Being in amilitary family and partaking to almost all things military insights, I can personally express that the Veterans Affairs Department is not as valuable as the media portrays it to be. Because it's is a government based company the media will not release any negative actions the VA has carried out. But then again, when you're in the military you realize that the majority of the Veteran Affairs Department workers are very conceited to put their personal problems before their patients' problems. Before my father was deployed he received a phone call from a former solider he was with in a previous deployment family member. In that phone call, the person stated that the soldier has been ... • 3. Overcoming Homeless Essay In this paper, I will focus on the topic of why veterans are coming back homeless. Veterans are seen as a savior of the country they are risking their lives for every day, so why is it that they are coming back from tours and service and ultimately ending up homeless? Since 2009 the United States stated that in five years they would end veteran homeless, but the United States is still facing veteran homelessness in the year 2017. Though the homeless rates of veterans have gone down since then, why are veterans still facing homelessness if so many resources are supposed to be available for them. Is there more than meets the eye when it comes to homelessness especially with veterans, yes. Many things can attribute to this continuing issue such as lack of assistances provided, mental illnesses, PTSD, lack or loss of support from being deployed, the use of drugs and alcohol as coping strategies, and the economics. Homelessness is something that many individuals in every country face on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... PTSD is a mental health problem that some individuals can develop after experiencing or witnessing a life–threatening event, such as combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. It is normal for an individual to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after a traumatic event. It may be hard to do normal activities, such as going to work, school, or spending time with people you care about. For some individuals, PTSD symptoms may not start right away they may come and go over time. With PTSD, veterans may find it had to keep their support groups such as family, friends and possible significant others close due to the symptoms of PTSD. • 4. An American Soldier The epitome of an American is an American soldier. They fight for our freedom, sacrifice their time and families, and sometimes give their lives for our country. The American soldier should be well compensated for all that they do, but putting a price on someone's sacrifice is complicated. Although our veterans should be well taken care of, there are many situations and modifications that should be made to make veterans benefits appropriate to each soldier. In the Letter to the Editor from Michael D. Helm, he states that our veterans are heroic and should receive their "small" payout for their time, disabilities, and sacrifices. While there are veterans who deserve full compensation, what about the ones who take the system for granted,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was rated at thirty percent and received a $450 a month check a month, tax free. Why should he be able to receive compensation for an injury that he benefited from in college? Why should someone who never defended our country in battle be able to file a claim after a substantial amount of time? This same man was charged with the murder of his wife in April of 2014. His rating dropped down to ten percent and he will receive $130 month for life. Why should he receive anything? He is a convicted murderer? Do these standards live up to the American ideology of what a soldier should be? This case is not the only case where veterans are allowed to take advantage of the system we have established. In the same article, "VA Benefits are Fourth Rail", Zarembo states a case that I find astounding, "... a schizophrenic man spent 38 days in Air Force basic training in 1975 before being discharged. He later served 10 years in prison for second–degree murder. In 2004, the VA deemed him 100% disabled and started paying him about $3,000 a month. High disability ratings do not necessarily reflect serious impairment."(3) There are also websites that teach veterans how to trick their psychologists. Military Construction Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs The Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies (MCVARA) is a subcommittee under The Appropriations Committee. The Appropriations Committee reviews and approves budget requests (funding legislation) from MCVARA. Once the funding legislation is reported to and approved by the Senate, the Senate works with the House to have the legislation approved and passed by the beginning of the fiscal year which falls on October 1st. The bills that they oversee help to provide... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However as of more recent, the focus has been to cut spending and this in turn has affected most notably, Veterans Affairs (VA) and theirhealth programs. According to the VA, "VA is charged with fulfilling President Lincoln's promise to care for those "who shall have borne the battle, and for " their families and their survivors. To support this mission, the 2016 Budget provides $70.2 billion in discretionary funding for VA, a 7.9 percent increase above the 2015 enacted level. In addition, the budget includes $3.2 billion in estimated medical care collections, for a total discretionary budget authority of $73.5 billion (which includes $3.2 billion in Medical Care Collections) and $95.3 billion for VA's mandatory benefit programs." This increase in budgetary spending can be deceiving as the VA is also seeing an increase in the amount of veterans claiming benefits. So although there is a budgetary increase, it is not enough (a deficit) to fulfill all claims made by veterans and/or their families and therefore is causing the VA to make cutbacks in both military construction efforts, but more importantly in medical benefits that veterans receive. For instance, improving veterans access to medical care to include strengthening their benefits program is a matter of priority. As has been recently of subject in the news, wait times for veterans has been extreme and inefficient, at times to the detriment of the health of veterans. Although the increase is aimed at providing more physicians and improving the VA's "physical" infrastructure, the budgetary increase lacks the foresight to address the growing veteran population in concurrence with the needed changes that are being proposed. • 6. Informative Essay On Veterans There are currently twenty two million Veterans in the United States of America. These are men and women who selflessly volunteered to serve in our armed forces to protect our freedom knowing that one day that the cost of that may be there life. It takes a special kind of person to put your life on the line to defend people's freedom and way of life that they have never even met and some won't appreciate and others will even hate them for. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Essay Why the Proper Treatment of Veterans with PTSD will Reduce the Rate of Suicides Soldiers who return home may not only have physical setbacks, but are mentally traumatized from what they have witnessed while serving our country. Veterans are more prone to be diagnosed with PTSD due to the combat they experience or witness on the field. Post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans has been prevalent for decades and there is still no known treatment option that has been found entirely effective. Many Vietnam veterans who never sought treatment due to the nonexistent "support for the troops" have been covering up their symptoms for approximately forty years. Countless soldiers return home without jobs and some feel like their whole world... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This may be due to the fact that veterans who served in the Vietnam war weren't respected by the majority of our country. When some Vietnam veterans returned home they "...described being unwelcomed and unappreciated, aside from a select few people, and noted great difficulty when attempting to reintegrate into the 'normal' civilian routines" (Desai et al.) The majority of the country was against the war towards the end due to the financial aspects it took in order to join the war. When some veterans came home they had no one to talk to and minimal support. As a result, they felt like they could not seek help in fear of being judged or looked at as weak. The Vietnam war "...was also the first time America failed to welcome its veterans back as heroes. Many veterans were attacked personally by their fellow countrymen, who opposed the war" (Vietnam). As a result, numerous Vietnam veterans are now seeking treatment due to the number of treatment options. Many factors can lead a veteran with PTSD to consider or commit suicide. An average of twenty veterans commit suicide each day (Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs). Not only is it personal pride, there is also a social stigma behind veterans needing support from others. This is because society gives veterans a strong reputation leading them to feel humiliated if they need someone to lean on. Many veterans "...feel ashamed and embarrassed to seek ... There will be numerous celebrations and thanks for the people who fought for our freedom, but often we forget what it was like coming home from a war. Coming back from the war and reassimilating into society can often times be just as challenging as fighting the war itself. There are so many factors that affect one's homecoming experience, such as the supportiveness of the community or the trauma caused by the war. Everybody is different which means everybody's experiences are going to differ. Leaving your home is definitely a difficult feat, and coming back is possibly even harder for some veterans. He tell's in his own words what it's like to come home from war and try to repress all of your guilt and grief. He describes the guilt as a "wound of the soul" and makes a point of how soldiers experience mental health issues as well as physical wounds. To help make this homecoming for veterans better, we should create a place for veterans to go to talk about what happened so they can release their grief and move on, instead of letting it sit untouched until it comes to conscience and makes life a nightmare. Since 9/11 the government has been doing more extended research into how they can help the family members of service men and women cope. When a family member is deployed overseas and the family members have to stay in the United States, the family goes through different types of emotions and challenges during the deployment. Side Note (F.Y.I): It is important to note here that not all VA Medical Centers are the same. Based off observation while volunteering at the West Los Angeles VA, I noticed that the environment was very experimental, which had a snowball effect to the issue on lack of care. The article goes deeper into describing some problems that arise when treatment for dual diagnosed veterans goes array (i.e. Veterans have to be sober for at least a month before seeking treatment for their PTSD). This highlights the author's conclusion: To rise to the challenge of treating this difficult population it is necessary to adapt treatment to meet their needs rather than requiring them to adapt to therapies that may not be a good fit (Bernhardt, 2009). 4.Integrated treatment programs along with evidence supporting its effectiveness are later brought up in this article, along with The Department of Veterans Affair recently drafting policy changes in predicting future positive outcomes of PTSD/SUD ...
