THE LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY AND
EXTINCTION
Extinction occurs when all the members of a species die. When
these animals disappear, they will never return to Earth.
... that some animals
have become extinct?
Dodo birds lived in Mauricio Islands, in the
Indian Ocean.
Quagga (el cuaga) lived in South Africa
and became extinct in the 19th
century.
The mammoth was very
important for people in
Prehistory.
The thylacine
(tilacino) used to live
in Tasmania.
The Bali tiger became
extinct in the 20th
century.
Some extinctions are the
result of a natural
process. For example,
when dinosaurs became
extinct due to the falling
of a meteor 65 million
years ago. However,
there are other reasons
for species to become
extinct.
What are the man-made reasons that
make species disappear?
4. People
pollute the
planet
more and
more.
3. Climatic
change is
making some
habitats
disappear, so
animals do not
have a place to
live.
1. People
destroy
ecosystems.
2. People
hunt too
many
animals.
These are some
endangered
animals nowadays.
Let's look after
them or they will
disappear very
soon!
Gorillas are endangered
animals because of pollution,
hunting and ecosystem
destruction.
Polar bears are
endangered animals
because of the
climatic change that is
melting the ice in the
poles.
White rhinos are
endangered animals
because of hunting.
People kill them to get
their horns.
Panda bears are
endangered animals
because of pollution,
ecosystem destruction
and climatic change.
The lemur lives in Madagascar.
The Iberian lynx is
an endangered
animal because of
hunting and
ecosystem
destruction.
Some reasons that are related to
extinction are the following:
1. Pollution
2. Deforestation
3. Invasive species
4. Global warming
5. Overpopulation
Pollution happens when toxic and poisonous
chemicals contaminate (or pollute) the air, soil and
water.
Deforestation happens when we cut
down too many trees.
Cutting down too many trees is harmful for us for two
reasons:
Trees will not produce
the oxygen that living
things need to live.
Trees won't absorb the
carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere.
OXYGEN CARBON
DIOXIDE
INVASIVE SPECIES
There are some plant and animal species that are
invasive. They come to an ecosystem and can change it
completely. Some invasive species can kill other
species from that ecosystem.
American crab
Killer algae
Zebra mussel
Argentinian parrot
Alicanto:
It is a beautiful
tree but it
doesn't allow
other plants to
grow.
GREENHOUSE EFFECT AND GLOBAL
WARMING
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqxMzKLYrZ4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_sJzVe9P_8
First, we have to know what the Greenhouse Effect is.
When the sun rays come to the Earth, three things
happen:
1. Some rays are absorbed by the Earth.
2. Some rays are
reflected to the space.
3. Some rays are caught (trapped) by some gases in the
atmosphere. Thanks to these gases, the Earth is a warm
planet. This is what we call the Greenhouse Effect because
the gases act like the glass in a greenhouse.
However, pollution in the air (toxic and poisonous gases) and
deforestation (remember, if there are less trees; there is more
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere) make these layer of gases
thicker.
So, the temperature on Earth is rising. The
consequences of this are terrible. Among them, we
can see that the polar caps are melting.
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Help me! Where
will I live if the ice
caps are melting?
OVERPOPULATION
It means that the number of people in the
planet is growing and growing. This can be
a problem because...
Growing population
Less food in the planet.
Less plants
due to
deforestation.
Less
plants
due to
pollution.
Less plants
due to
global
warming.
Less plants
due to
invasive
species.
Less rain
due to
global
warming.
As you can see, we are facing too many problems, but
what should the solution be?
This will be dealt with in the next presentation.

Extinction and loss of biodiversity

  • 1. THE LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY AND EXTINCTION
  • 2. Extinction occurs when all the members of a species die. When these animals disappear, they will never return to Earth.
  • 3. ... that some animals have become extinct?
  • 4. Dodo birds lived in Mauricio Islands, in the Indian Ocean.
  • 5. Quagga (el cuaga) lived in South Africa and became extinct in the 19th century.
  • 6. The mammoth was very important for people in Prehistory.
  • 7. The thylacine (tilacino) used to live in Tasmania. The Bali tiger became extinct in the 20th century.
  • 8. Some extinctions are the result of a natural process. For example, when dinosaurs became extinct due to the falling of a meteor 65 million years ago. However, there are other reasons for species to become extinct.
  • 9. What are the man-made reasons that make species disappear? 4. People pollute the planet more and more. 3. Climatic change is making some habitats disappear, so animals do not have a place to live. 1. People destroy ecosystems. 2. People hunt too many animals.
  • 10. These are some endangered animals nowadays. Let's look after them or they will disappear very soon!
  • 11. Gorillas are endangered animals because of pollution, hunting and ecosystem destruction. Polar bears are endangered animals because of the climatic change that is melting the ice in the poles.
  • 12. White rhinos are endangered animals because of hunting. People kill them to get their horns. Panda bears are endangered animals because of pollution, ecosystem destruction and climatic change.
  • 13. The lemur lives in Madagascar. The Iberian lynx is an endangered animal because of hunting and ecosystem destruction.
  • 14. Some reasons that are related to extinction are the following: 1. Pollution 2. Deforestation 3. Invasive species 4. Global warming 5. Overpopulation
  • 15. Pollution happens when toxic and poisonous chemicals contaminate (or pollute) the air, soil and water.
  • 16. Deforestation happens when we cut down too many trees.
  • 17. Cutting down too many trees is harmful for us for two reasons: Trees will not produce the oxygen that living things need to live. Trees won't absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. OXYGEN CARBON DIOXIDE
  • 19. There are some plant and animal species that are invasive. They come to an ecosystem and can change it completely. Some invasive species can kill other species from that ecosystem.
  • 24. Alicanto: It is a beautiful tree but it doesn't allow other plants to grow.
  • 25. GREENHOUSE EFFECT AND GLOBAL WARMING
  • 26. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqxMzKLYrZ4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_sJzVe9P_8 First, we have to know what the Greenhouse Effect is. When the sun rays come to the Earth, three things happen:
  • 27. 1. Some rays are absorbed by the Earth.
  • 28. 2. Some rays are reflected to the space.
  • 29. 3. Some rays are caught (trapped) by some gases in the atmosphere. Thanks to these gases, the Earth is a warm planet. This is what we call the Greenhouse Effect because the gases act like the glass in a greenhouse.
  • 30. However, pollution in the air (toxic and poisonous gases) and deforestation (remember, if there are less trees; there is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere) make these layer of gases thicker.
  • 31. So, the temperature on Earth is rising. The consequences of this are terrible. Among them, we can see that the polar caps are melting. GREENHOUSE EFFECT
  • 32. Help me! Where will I live if the ice caps are melting?
  • 33. OVERPOPULATION It means that the number of people in the planet is growing and growing. This can be a problem because...
  • 34. Growing population Less food in the planet. Less plants due to deforestation. Less plants due to pollution. Less plants due to global warming. Less plants due to invasive species. Less rain due to global warming.
  • 35. As you can see, we are facing too many problems, but what should the solution be? This will be dealt with in the next presentation.
