The Trinity Wall Street
I found out about Trinity Wall Street on the Internet, as I browsed the list of religious organizations
based in New York City. Trinity Wall Street has a website with url
(http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/). The layout of the Website is good, and shows they update their
site regularly and are in touch with the aesthetics of modern web design and usability. There is a lot
of information, but the site still does not feel cluttered. At the top menu includes Calendar, News
and Blogs, Congregational Life, Music, Faith Formation, Faith in Action, History, Webcasts, and the
Gift Shop. There is also a search function. Before I visited the Trinity Wall Street Church in person,
I browsed the Website thoroughly. I wanted to understand what the organization represented, and
what their schedule of services was like. I learned that the Trinity Church is located on Broadway at
Wall Street, and that their offices are nearby along with other service centers that are associated with
the organization.
Trinity's church is a traditional gray and brown stone building, which contrasts nicely with the
surrounding glass skyscrapers and is keeping with New York's diverse culture and way of life. The
churchyard is surrounded by a black iron gate. There is a simple colonnade around the main church,
which also has a steeple. At one point perhaps the steeple would have seemed larger but now it is
completely overshadowed. It is a relatively small building in general, dwarfed by its neighbors. And

Inequality And The Financial Crisis: The Wall Street Crash
In the beginning of the financial crisis, most people normally will not realize or predict the disaster
that is coming. As John Kenneth Galbraith discussed in "The Great Crash 1929," "only after the
market crash were there plausible grounds to suppose that things might now for a long while get a
lot worse" (pg. 90). During the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the most destructive stock market crash
happened in the United States' history. There are numerous causes dedicated to this crash, such as,
the inequality and the poor regulations of structures. The causes of this 1929 Great Crash are similar
to those of the Financial Crisis in 2008. However, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 led to "a longest
and deepest economic downturn in the United States' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many researchers propose and suggest that inequality is the main factor that leads to a financial
crisis and there is a casual connection between inequality and severe downturns. In the 1929
Financial Crisis, inequality refers to the corrupted distribution of income among the citizens. In the
1928, the income unequal distribution became the most extreme point in the United States since the
richest five percent of the population held more than one–third of all income of the United States'
citizens. From Galbraith's words "the proportion of personal income received in the form of interest,
dividends, and rent – the income, broadly speaking, of the well–to–do – was about twice as great as
in the years following the Second World War" (pg. 177), it showed that the rich were gaining more
power and wealth, in different forms. As the five percent of the population held the large proportion
of the United States' economy, this means that the rest of the population, especially those who were
originally poor, were suffering just for living. From this fact, it proves that, at that time, "the
economy was dependent on a high level of investment or a high level of luxury consumer spending
or both" (pg.177). When the economy is highly relying on only a few people, it becomes less stable
and is more likely to suffer from big swings because these people were not able to buy large
quantities of everyday needed items. Because the rich invested in new projects and bought luxuries,
when they lose money and could not afford to buy things, the economy crashed. Inequality was one
of the causes of the 1929 financial crisis because in the beginning of the decade, the economy was
growing; therefore, it created an environment that buying stocks became a hobby for the rich. As the
rich gained more money from stock market, it persuaded others that stock was easy money, which
dragged more people to this market. Due to

WALLSTREET: Money Never Sleeps
"Time is the most valuable commodity."..... Right i should invest to it.
When it comes to investing you need to be patient. It takes a long time to determine if a stock is
good and if you are able to find the right type of stock to help you grow a solid retirement. Finding
strong winners and keeping the money invested in them is the best way to make sure that there is
little risk and still the potential for gain. The best stocks will pay a dividend and have a stable
commodity that the company produces.

If so, where does the sense of morality and humanity fit in within a world consumed by power and

Set a little over two decades since the last movie, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" is about a
young up and coming Wall Street player a named Jacob Moore, who works as a stock broker, while
moon lighting as a corporate CEO for a alternative energy source company. Unfortunately due to a
series of events, his long time mentor commits suicide when the stress of losing his company gets to
him, as a savvy investor moves in and forces him out.
As the global economy teeters on the brink of disaster, Jacob partners with disgraced former Wall
Street corporate raider Gordon Gekko on a two–tiered mission: To alert the financial community to
the coming doom, and to find out who was responsible for the death of Jacob's mentor.
Unfortunately for Jake, Gordon has other priorities in mind outside of rekindling things with his
daughter, Jacob's fiance. Now, I won't say what happens next, as I wouldn't want to ruin the film.
However, for those wondering if Gordon Gekko is a changed man or if he learned anything about
life from losing it all, at the end of the last film, to becoming rich again, then all I can tell you is that
you'll have to watch the movie to find out.
Trust me, it's worth it. The way the story is set up, it has it leading towards one way to where you'll

The Wall Street crash of 1929
Introduction
In late October 1929, years of great prosperity ended in a sudden halt and resulted in a great
catastrophe. The Wall Street crash of 1929, also known as "The great crash" of "Black Tuesday",
was the biggest stock market crash since the beginning of stock records.
Many speculators lost a lot of money on big investments, banks also began to decline, and this later
was followed by a depression across the world that lasted for about a decade and which inevitably
caused a world war.
USA in the 1920'
To figure out why the stock market crashed, we will have to look back at the recent events in the
USA. In 1919 USA's confidence started growing. They had just won World War 1 and therefore the

Unluckily for him and the whole nation, he wasn't heard. Even 60 new companies had been listed on
the stock exchange between March and September of 1929; these new companies added over 10
million shares to the stock exchange.
President Hoover frequently asked his friends if he should be concerned about the stock market. He
even received a memo from Thomas Lamont saying that there wasn't any reason to be concerned
and he even ended the memo with "The future appears brilliant".
5 days later, Wednesday 23 of October 1929, the market crashed. It is unknown what was the cause
of the sudden drop of automobile stocks. These drops of course led to wild and unstoppable last
minute trades and millions of shares were sold. The next day "The Great Crash" began.
The Crash
Thursday 24 of October 1929, also known, as "Black Thursday" was a chaotic day. All stocks were
dropping and this scared a lot of people. People started to gather outside of Wall Street in panic and
disbelief. They all wanted some news. The government was afraid that the crowds that were
gathering outside of the stock exchange were going to storm in; therefore they sent 400 mounted
troops to the

Summary : ' The Wall Street ' Essay
Summary of Wall Street In 1985, Bud Fox is a young stockbroker in New York City at Jackson
Steinem &Co. He wants to become bigger and better and work with his hero Gordon Gekko, a
legendary Wall Street player. He became so obsessed with working with Mr.Gekko, that he called
his office 59 days in a row in hopes to get through to him. Since that didn't seem to work, he decided
that he would approach it a different way, and go and pay him a personal visit with a birthday gift,
Gekko's favorite Cuban cigars. With Mr. Gekko being impressed by Fox's boldness, he offers to
listen to his pitch. After Bud pitches him different stocks, and Gekko doesn't seem interested, he
takes a turn and provides him with some inside information about Bluestar Airlines, that he learned
from his father Carl, the union leader for the company. Gekko acting intrigued by the information
told Bud he would think about it, but that he also "looks into a hundred deals a day, but only chooses
one." Bud being upset about it not going as well as planned returns to his office, only to get a call
from Mr. Gekko himself to buy into the stock for Bluestar Airlines. Gekko also gives Bud some
capital to invest in other stocks. Unfortunately, the other stocks Bud chooses lose money, making
Gekko lose faith in him. Gekko decides to give Bud another chance, but wants him to spy on his
rivalry Sir Lawrence Wildman, a British CEO to determine Wildman's next move. Hesitantly Bud
says no at first, because he could lose

Stock Market: Wall Street History Of The United States
Stock Market In 1929, the stock market was one of the most horrible days in the Wall Street history
of the United States. Many called Black Tuesday the day that the market declined thirteen percent;
others say it was a great stock market crash. Even when historians mention that the big Crash was
not, the reason for the Great Depression they say that the cause was the Stock Market itself.
Everything started in October 24, 1929 was the day the investors lose millions of dollars, in shares
in a single day. This caused this manufacturing world to go down, soon after the Great Depression
one of the major and one the last the longest exactly ten years from 1929 to 1939. What was the
cause for this to happen history mentioned, that the market was

The Occupy Wall Street
The Occupy Wall Street began in fall of 2011 in response to an email which was sent by online
publication Adbusters. In this call–to–arms, those without jobs or other such responsibilities were
urged to make their way to Manhattan for a long–term civil protest. The purpose of this gathering
would be to decry the prevalence of corruption in the United States government, specifically as it
related to Wall Street. (Economic Sociology and Political Economy)The physical movement began
in a private New York City Park which was soon dubbed 'Liberty Square ', and continued to grow
until mid–November of 2011 when the protesters were forcibly evicted by the New York police.
While many assumed that this would be the end of the organization, they simply moved their protest
online, where they still manage to maintain a presence on the political activism scene, and have
expanded to include a plethora of other socio–political causes. One of the riskiest methods utilized
by the Occupy Wall Street campaign was their use of protestor–created signs and photos, rather than
professional advertisements. This personalized approach often proves to be far more productive than
a mere print ad. Using the classic method of Logos, Pathos, and Ethos, they succeeded in
manipulating the tendency of humanity to believe anything with a statistic attached to it, as well as
their emotions and desire to believe in their fellow man, which in turn created an explosive cocktail
of a movement and made Occupy

Compare and Contrast 2 Great Newspapers
Despite being printed for the same date, in this case January 30th, 2014, the distinction can still be
made, and by this it can be said that if the titles of the newspapers were removed it would not be
hard to distinguish one from the other. By placing the front page of the New York Times (NYT) and
of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) side by side, the reader can piece together few similarities and a
greater amount of contrast between the two. These are especially true when looking at the stories
that were covered, the amount of space some stories took compared to others, and the slants many of
the headlines took. These were the headlines from that day. On the cover of the NYT: childhood
obesity, a Google business move, Russian's testing of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Visually looking at the two different covers, the amount of space given to the 2–3 major stories was
about the same. In both, the biggest space was taken by the pictures. In the NYT, an image of stalled
cars on the highway in Atlanta took the biggest space and the next biggest was an image of two
children crying with a chard car behind them. In the WSJ, there was a collection of charts that
displayed data about the stock market and another of stranded people sleeping in a store in Atlanta.
Both of the newspaper share this trait, the most of space going to the pictures. Another similarity
would be that the written articles shared length, for example in the NYT the story of obesity and
Russian missile test were about the same and in the WSJ the articles of Reid and movie productions
were also about the same. The clear distinction comes with the content of the pictures and again it
revolves around the interests of organizations: money and social issues. One major difference and an
unexpected part was the ad for Oracle in the WSJ which took up as much space if not more than the
Reid commentary, the Russian test, or even the picture from the Atlanta crisis. The length of the
Google article was also distinct, where the NYT gave a full column, the WSJ gave it a small
paragraph. Another point to note is the display and position of the headlines or newsfeed. The WSJ
had two broad

Causes And Effects Of The Wall Street Crash
The Wall Street crash, also known as Black Tuesday, happened on October 24th in 1929.This day
was to be remembered as the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States
and one of the most important economic events ever. The crash has been researched globally by
economists and has increased the understanding of risks in economy and stock market. In this essay,
we will look at the stock market at the time, as well as causes and effects of the crash.
A fundamental factor of the crash was the overheating of the economy and economic bubble created
by the overpriced stocks that followed. From 1921 onwards, the stock market was doing very well
and businesses were hitting profit records. () This caused stocks to become valuable ... Show more

The crash was a very harsh time not only for the people who had been involved in the stock market.
When the stock market fell and the banks wanted the loaned money back the speculators were
struggling to scrape up enough to pay, but also ordinary people lost all they owned. Many investors
who had gotten rich by shares lost everything. Statistics show that there was a spike in suicides in
the years 1929–1930, a sign of many people being desperate as their household economy was ruined
by debts to the banks. The Wall Street crash is still very relevant as it shows how greatly the people
not even involved in the stock market are affected by it. A long term effect was that americans lost
faith in the stock market. The general attitude towards buying shares was negative. In July after the
crash the stock market index Dow had fallen by 90% from its highest in september 1929. No
confidence in the market resulted in an unhealthy economy and it took 25 years for the stock market
to recover.
As explained above the Wall street crash has had major impacts of the US and world economy. It
has been the subject of academic debate economically, historically, and politically from when it
happened to present day. It is important to study the wall street crash as it will increase our
understanding of the risks of the stock market

Bus301: Business Ethics
I have to admit that even though the Occupy Wall Street Movement has been all over the news I did
not truly understand the stance of it, nor did I really get involved with it. While doing research for
this paper I was able to get a better understanding of the basis of the movement as well as the facts
pertaining to it. The movement started on Wall Street but has spread across the US. The basis of the
movement focuses on social & economic inequality, greed, corruption and the influence of
corporations on the US government, primarily from the financial sectors of businesses. The main
slogan of Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is we are the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a strong emphasis is on the evils of the opposite of liberty, primarily oppression. Even
though OWS didn't has a set, specific list of demands, the overall consensus was clear, rein in the
influence of big businesses, which cheated and manipulated their way to great wealth, in part by
buying legislations, while leaving a trail of oppressed and impoverished victims in their wake. By
naming the issue, the movement has changed the political discourse. The movement has unleashed
the political power of millions of individuals and has issued an open invitation to everyone to be a
part of creating a new world.
If the protesters continue to focus on the gross inequality of outcomes in America, they will get
nowhere. There is no equality foundation. Fairness means proportionality, and if Americans
generally think that the rich got rich by working harder or by providing goods and services that were
valued in a free market, they won't support redistributionist policies. But if the OWS protesters can
better articulate their case that "the 1 percent" got its riches by cheating, rather than by providing
something valuable, or that "the 1 percent" abuses its power and oppresses "the 99 percent," then
Occupy Wall Street will find itself standing on a very secure pair of moral foundations.
When it comes to the responsibility of the income inequality and

Causes of the Wall Street Crash
On 24 October 1929, some shareholders began to lose confidence and believing that the prices of
shares could not continue to rise forever, decided to sell. A panic began, and so many shares were
sold on that day that it became known as Black Thursday. The Wall Street Crash was under way. By
Tuesday 29 October so many shares were being sold that the teleprinters could not keep up, share
prices continued to fall, and people lost vast sums of money and were ruined.

The Wolf Of Wall Street Stock Fraud Essay
Two main illegal acts described in the movie are the stock fraud and the money laundry. The stock
fraud was possible because Jordan Belford, the protagonist of the movie sold penny stocks which
are not regulated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). SEC is an agency of the
United States federal government that holds primary responsibility for enforcing the federal
securities laws, proposing securities rules, and regulating the securities industry, the nation's stock
and options exchanges. When SEC came to audit the "Stratton Oakmont", Jordan's company he said
he has nothing to hide. SEC couldn't discover the fraud and the Federal Bureau of Investigations

technic was called "pump and dump". Belford promised huge returns to his investors, but since the
stock was worthless it was losing the value after "Stratton Oakmont", who owned the stock stopped
promoting the stock. Besides that it is illegal to falsify financial statements, Belford also had broken

The Wall Street Is An Useful Tool For The American Economy
Pros of Wall Street
Wall Street is an extremely useful tool for the American economy. It helps those who are in the
lower part of the social ladder by giving them a chance to climb the ladder of economic opportunity.
Wall Street also helps boost other industries within America, thereby making it vital for the
American economy. As Wall Street is one of the most important financial institutions in the world
and provides more positive aspects for the economy than negative ones. Wall Street is extremely
important for the American economy. Jeff Madrick, the editor of Challenge: The Magazine of
Economic Affairs, in his piece "Does America need Wall Street", cites historian Alfred Chandler,
who argued that the majority of the money put into America during industrialization came from
corporate profits (Madrick). Those profits were able to make technological advances for all
Americans. Daniel Indiviglio, former associate editor of the Atlantic, states that Wall Street is also
important to the economy because it helps banks create capital (Indiviglio). That bank capital helps
create jobs in the economy by causing more money to be available to be put into the economy. Wall
Street plays an important part in the economy, and without it, America would face financial
hardships. Wall Street also helps the American economy by providing the opportunity to be able to
move up the financial ladder. Adam Davidson, a journalist who focuses on business and economic

Reasons Why The Crash Of Wall Street Happened
This paper will talk about the various reasons why the crash of Wall Street happened; such as the
credit boom, buying on margin, and irrational exuberance. Also, mismatch between production and
consumption, and the weaknesses of the banking system. The many reasons why the Great
Depression occurred but the main ones are from the uneven distribution of income, loss of export
sales, and mistakes by the Federal Reserve. This paper will also give examples on how the economic
problems in 1929 were similar to the economic problems in 2008 in America. Lastly, this paper will
talk about the different lessons learned from the very hard struggle of going through the Great
Depression. One of the reasons the crash of Wall street occurred was because of credit boom and
buying on margin, these two things were are basically the same thing. Many people thought the
stock market would only go up so they would use the bank for credit and loans to purchase stock.
Everyone who borrowed money from the bank had to repay it quickly after the market crash in 1929
because the banks needed money to pay back the money they borrowed from their consumers which
they invested in stock. Irrational Exuberance happened when the stock broker questioned the value
of the shares. Many stock brokers began to grossly overvalue the shares which had a great effect on
the crash of the stock market. Mismatch between production and consumption was occurred when
companies made lots of product but the demand was lowered

The Wall Street Meltdown
The Wall Street Meltdown The Meltdown is a PBS special on the events of the financial crisis of
2008, in a timeline format, revealing the thinking behind decisions made during the fateful months
before the stock market crash in August of that year. Some financial gurus on Wall Street devised a
plan to bundle several mortgages together into a group, and then selling that bundle to another group
of investors looking to invest in securities. The lender did not need to earn money from the loans he
was giving out, he merely gained enough of a profit from the bundling operation that billions were
being made on Wall Street from 2005–2008. The problem is that these bundles were risky, and as
credit unworthy individuals defaulted on their mortgages, the entire system crumbled into what is
now known as the Stock Market Crash of 2008, and have subsequently lived during the Great
Recession. The beginning of the crisis is marked as the downfall of Bear Stearns Financial. The
company, with a triple A rating, was sidelined with problems of lack of cash flow, and a piling up of
unpaid debts on housing mortgages. Bear Stearns invested heavily in these mortgages, because they
were lucrative so long as the loans were being paid off. Foreclosures did not begin to pile up until
after the 2005–2006 years of mass investment in the housing boom had already seeped into every
corner of the United States. The first feeling of a tremble in the market caused Bear Stearn's stock to

The 's Account Of Wall Street
Whether it be popular culture such as television shows or movies or real life scenarios society
always finds work structure to be a captivating and dare I say entertaining. Melville's account of
Wall Street is an interesting one that explores characters that have some similar characteristics to
modern day office settings. This paper will explore the different personalities described in "Bartleby
the Scrivener", discover how that relates to modern culture, and conclude with why people find it
captivating. First the narrator is introduced, not by name, but it is easy to infer about him by the way
he attempts to describe Bartleby and the other workers. He begins by saying "Ere introducing the
scrivener, as he first appeared to me, it is fit I make some mention of myself, my employés, my
business, my champers, and general surroundings", which once again says a lot more about the
narrators personality (p.2402). The excessive use of "my" proves this man is egotistically driven and
when reading on he continues to refer more to himself rather than his employees. This idea of a self
centered boss who views himself as superior to his cohorts does not sound familiar at all right?
Wrong! Many people may even have personal experience that coincides with Bartleby's experiences
of a self absorbed boss. There is a movie entitled, "Horrible Bosses" (2011) making 209.6 million
dollar in the box office. This hilarious movie although over exaggerated is found to be highly

Jordan Belfort had chose all the wrong decisions that he had done with his money but what I bring

thousands of dollars a day without thinking twice about it. For me, I believe that at 27 years old and
making 49 million dollars a year is an unbelievable achievement in anyone's eyes! "I had so much
money I didn't know what to do with it" for anyone to have said anything along these lines is
amazing. Jordan was not the smartest person with his money, however I feel like a lot of people with
the amount of money he had would do the same as he did. Jordan had enough money to buy
whatever he liked, including a 147–foot yacht. In my eyes if having that doesn't inspire people I
don't know what will. To me Jordan has been one of the most successful people I have heard of in a
business place in the shortest amount of time, from when he first started 22 to when he made the

film that follows closely to Jordan Belfort's memoir of becoming a filthy rich stockbroker. "The

Rothschild. Belfort, at this moment, portrays that his innocence is still in tact by refusing a
lunchtime martini and hoping that he can be profitable for both the clients and himself. On October
19, 1987, or Black Monday, the stock market crashed and left Belfort without a job. As he said,
"Wall Street had swallowed me up, and shit me back out." Belfort eventually took a job at small
investor business where he sold penny stocks. The penny stocks allowed Belfort to make $72,000 in
one month! How you may be asking? The blue chip stocks he was selling at the large firm only
resulted in a 1% commission, while the penny stocks were 50%. Belfort used his smooth talking to
talk poor shmucks into investing a few thousand dollars and he was able to pocket half. From there
Belfort opened his own business, Stratton Oakmont, with his neighbor Donnie Azoff. Rather than
continue selling to the poor, Belfort targeted the richest of the rich and would open up with the blue
chip stocks, and then give the clients the penny stocks, where stockbroker's earned the money.
Stratton Oakmont continued to grow and eventually made it to Wall Street. Belfort also made money
by creating phony accounts and investing in his own stock, which brought a lot of illegal cash to his
door. Although he was a clever business man, he spent his money ignorantly. Belfort spent money
on drugs, prostitutes, yachts, and of course a mansion

Wall Street In The 1930s Essay
Coming out of the recession from the crash was not an easy task, and without some crucial events
we would have never came out of it. "President Roosevelt issued Proclamation 2039 ordering the
suspension of all banking transactions, effective immediately until it was decided by the government
to be a safe bank to gain Americans trust back" (Wall Street). This stopped everyone from hating
banks after all the money lost people did not trust banks, and with no one putting money in the
banks they were closing. When a bank was government approved to be safe people weren't so wary
of putting money in it anymore, and because the president made a law so their money would not be
completely lost if it closed. "Though the relief and reform measures put into place by President
Franklin D. Roosevelt helped lessen the worst effects of the Great Depression in the 1930s, the
economy would not fully turn around until after 1939, when World War II kicked American industry

How Far Was Speculation Responsible for the Wall Street...
How far was speculation responsible for the Wall Street Crash? Speculation was one of the main
factors for the Wall Street Crash. There were other reasons for the Wall Street Crash but everything
is connected. The Wall Street simply over–heated; between 1924–29 the value of shares rose 5
times. The Wall Street Crash was a horrible consequence for the Americans. People that lived in
America thought they were doing so well because of the roaring twenties. People could afford
almost everything they wanted, they could go out and spend money and buy many consumer goods.
As the Wall Street Crash came people's lives changed a lot and they couldn't afford to do anything.

For example an industry was making a vast amount of refrigerators, families in America bought
refrigerators but after they bought one they didn't buy anymore because they didn't need it. As there
were such vast amounts of consumer goods there was no one left to buy them. As there was no one
that could buy these consumer goods the prices fell. America wasn't exporting its goods and wasn't
importing any. There were 'protective tariffs' and these tariffs lead to not having any export or
import. America was becoming isolated because America only wanted the goods that were made in
the country to be sold. Another important factor was that banks made a decision not to support share
prices. Banks themselves were involved in speculation and they did nothing to hold it back.
American banks had lent $ 9 billion for speculating in 1929. Everyone was buying shares and
selling them when the prices had gone down. Not only rich people but poor people as well. There
were too many shares on the market and no one could buy them. The main problem was that there
were so many shares on the market and there wasn't enough demand for them. There was corruption
between the banks and the brokers what this basically meant was that some greedy people were
making money of innocent people and they were another factor for the Wall Street Crash. One thing
that was very vital was confidence. People needed to trust banks and if there was confidence the
prices will keep on rising and

Wolf Of Wall Street Anthropology
Popular culture depiction: The Wolf of Wall Street The Wolf of Wall Street is a 2013 crime film
directed by Martin Scorsese. The film is based on the written autobiography of Jordan Belfort, a
convicted criminal of stock manipulation and securities fraud, as it narrates the story of his quest of
achieving the American dream through illegitimate means, which ultimately lead to his downfall and
closure of his firm. The film has been widely criticised for allegedly taking pleasure in the bad
behaviour of the main character and his illegal brokering firm (Horne 2014). The genre used for the
production of the movie is of dark comedy. The crime is mainly represented through the scenes of
the offender's lavish lifestyle and the financial gains of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The newsworthiness criteria of dramatisation and personalisation that regulate the construction of
news have caused the underrepresentation of white–collar crime coverage, alongside with the
narration of the lifestyle of the offenders instead of the crime and sufferings of the victims. This is
due to the lack of moral panic created by white–collar crime, and the difficulty in creating 'folk
devil's images due to the ambiguity in the victims. The simplification criteria also caused the
positioning of white–collar crime news in the business press, which lead to this area of crime going
unnoticed by the general viewers. The entertainment media objective to provide sensation for the
audiences has glossed over the explanation on the consequences of the crime for people and society,
leading to the glamourisation of the crime. The genre of comedy used in film has enabled the
downplaying of the severity of white–collar crime. In terms of narrative structure, The Wolf has
provided minimal space for the victims of crime and instead focused on the financial motivation of
the offender to set the film in motion. The focus on agency in the portrayal of white–collar criminals
in the media may lead to the disregard of structural problems of the crime. The lack of public
pressure to enhance policy

The Relationship of The Wall Street Crash and The Great Depression
In this essay I will be explaining the causes of the Great Depression
The Wall Street Crash was the drop in share prices in 1929.The Great Depression was the period in
the 1930's when the USA and other countries like Germany suffered a great deal of poverty i.e.
hunger, unemployment, homelessness.
Throughout this essay it will be explained how the Wall Street crash was a cause of the Great
Depression but it was not the only cause as there were many other factors that also led to the Great
Depression.
I think the next long term cause was of the Great Depression was the inequality between the rich and
the poor. This was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of this the rich were getting richer and the poor were getting poorer especially the farmers
and the ethnic minorities. The farmers and the ethnic minorities were already in depression, as they
could not afford to buy any of the consumer goods and if they could they could not afford to pay for
electricity or the fuel to use them.
Actions of the banks was also a cause of the Great Depression although it a was a short term cause
as it this only became apparent after the Wall Street Crash that the banks had leant too much money
to the speculators. In the sense that they should not have leant so much money to anybody and
everybody they would also not have lent the savings of some people out to other people. They also
encouraged people to borrow money, which made them go into debt, which led to the Great
Depression, as the speculators who had borrowed money could not pay the banks back as they had
no jobs
and the share prices had gone right down. The government was also to blame for the actions of the
banks as they had given the banks too much freedom and had allowed them to lend as much money
as they wanted to people. The government could have had control over this by limiting the amount
of money they could lend to the people.
Actions of the speculators was another short term linked to

Wall Street
To many a metaphor for a semi–real place where fortunes are made and lost, Wall Street is actually a
very real place with a very rich history. Among investors, "Wall Street" refers to the collective set of
financial institutions in New York City including stock exchanges, banks, brokerages, commodity
markets, money markets, hedge funds, etc.[1] These institutions buy and sell securities in capital
markets. Securities are contracts, to borrow money or fund a company for a stake in its ownership
for example, that can be traded at a price. Capital markets are the markets, like stock exchanges,
where these securities are traded. Generally, companies need money to produce what they sell and
investors have this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1903 the NYSE moved to its current building on Wall Street. In 1907, a panic caused by the
collapse of the Knickerbocker Trust bank was considered the worst crash in Wall Street history to
date. During WWI, the Exchange was closed for five months, the longest period in its history. After
the war stock prices soared on Wall Street, and stock market speculation became widely popular.[4]
The 1929 Crash
The 1920s was a decade of intense stock market speculation. The stock market permeated popular
culture much more than it does today. In 1929, a British correspondent wrote, ""You could talk
about Prohibition, or Hemingway, or air conditioning, or music, or horses, but in the end you had to
talk about the stock market, and that was when the conversation became serious."[5] During the
1920s, stocks listed on the NYSE more than quadrupled in value. People believed that the market
could only keep going up. A prominent Yale economist, Irving Fisher, is known for claiming in the
1920s that stocks were absolutely not overvalued and that, "The nation is marching along a
permanently high plateau of prosperity."[6] Believing that stocks would just continue to increase in
value, many investors bought stock without researching different companies' profitbablity. When
people buy stocks just because the market is going up and not because the company whose stock

The History Of Wall Street
1 – The History of Wall Street
Wall Street is widely regarded as one of the most famous streets in all of New York City, as it plays
host to the longstanding New York Stock Exchange. While everyone knows that these days it
features the latest and greatest stockbrokers, it wasn't always that way. Wall Street has a lengthy
history, all of which emerged from very humble beginnings back in 1792. The following takes a
look at Wall Street and details what has made it the stock market force that it is today.
Back in the early 1790s the act of stock trading was somewhat secretive, as merchants would meet
at the Corre 's Hotel to discuss how securities could be traded away from the auction block. A few
months later these same merchants would sign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Steel Corporation merger. Wall Street was astounded, but it was clear that there were dark days
ahead despite such success. In 1929 Wall Street was thrown into panic, when amidst true struggle it
convinced the rest of the country that all was fine. This misconception saw both the poor and rich
pump their money in to Wall Street, right before the market would dip, subsequently costing the
country's residents billions.
The 1929 stock market crash changed the course of history, as the country was plunged into
darkness. During the 1930s and beyond the United States and Wall Street would try to rebuild. In
many ways just that would occur, but as the decades passed, another dark day would loom on the
horizon. It has been dubbed "Black Monday" and it is a day that no one who lived through it will
ever forget. On October 19th, 1987 the Dow Jones Index would fall by a record setting 508 pints.
Billions upon billions would be lost in a matter of hours. Since those days the ship has largely been
steadied, despite a few blips such as the 2008 economic crisis.
Wall Street and what it plays host to is now a key part of American culture, as it is the home of the
New York Stock Exchange. Immortalised in history through sheer presence alone, it is the hub of all
things stocks and shares; with it set to remain that way long into the future.

Do Consequences Depend on Motives in Julius Caesar by...
An American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr once said, "All human sin seems so much worse in its
consequences than in its intentions." In this statement, Niebuhr exclaims that the consequences of a
situation are undeniably much worse than the motivation of one's instigation of their actions. This
applies to the intentions and, more importantly, the consequences of the characters in both the play
Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare and film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps directed by Oliver
Stone. Even though some people have honorable intentions and mean no harm, the consequences
can still be disastrous. In much the same way, those with fraudulent intentions also suffer in the end.
Situations like these can be accurately viewed through both the play and the film. The characters
Brutus and Jacob Moore have no other reason but to act in a worthy way. While Cassius and Gordon
Gekko have deceptive intentions, consequences incur similar to Brutus and Jacob Moore. The
intentions may seem like the most important consideration in a decision, but, in reality, the penalties
can be the same no matter what the motives are.
A motive to kill one's best friend requires deep thinking and a reasonable intention. Brutus, Caesar's
best friend, has taken into consideration why he thinks killing Caesar is necessary. Although Brutus
is Caesar's best friend, he has to come to conclusion that murdering him is his final decision when
he asserts, "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome

Business Adventures
For my book report I read an interesting book made up of 12 different stories or cases from
American History called "Business Adventures: Twelve Classic Tales From the World of Wall
Street", by John Brooks. Each chapter is different from the next having no connection between them
besides them all being about investing and business. This book offers many different insightful ideas
on how the stock market works and I'll take you through each chapter separately. The Fluctuation,
chapter 1 is about the 1962 stock market crash and its sudden bounce back during the following day
of trading. The crash of 1962 was the worst crash since the 1929 crash which dropped 38.33 points;
the market dropped 34.97 points in 62. The crash offers some insights on how the market works
pointing to a term that trader Joseph de la Vega coined called "antiperistalsis" thus describing the
how the market reverses course, then reverses back again. A few suggestions on why this happened
were individual investors with money that didn't have knowledge of the securities business.
Secondly, investors that were playing with borrowed money that was forced to pay margin calls.
Lastly, Mechanical delays could have possibly affected the how investors bought and sold. Because
of the large number of transactions there was a problem with the recording and reporting trades so
investors couldn't know what the prices were when they made a transaction.

Wall Street In America
Wall Street and it is a street located in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Wall Street is the heart of

country. All the big financial firms have planted their roots from the early days and have managed to
control the economy for many years. Those companies have a lot to say about our economy and
have managed to increase or decrease our financial growth. Wall Street is where all the money in
country flows through. Wall street is so big that most people say "it is too big to fail" and people

Wall Street affects the U.S economy in many ways, but the most influential ones are wealth effect as
people tend to spend more when their net income or valuable assets increase in value and this makes
the consumers more confident and comfortable as they are willing to invest more money into the
economy which is beneficial which can have positive when consumers are willing to spend and
negative when people are not confident which lowers the GDP. Another way is that, during an
expansion, markets use their stocks to raise capital, which can then be used to reinvest to have
higher economic output and hire more employees which eventually leads to having a better GDP.
However, there are criticisms of how Wall Street works. Some people think that it is a rigged market
based many convictions and scandals that have occurred in the past. It can cause an economy to
enter a recession as is proven in the Great Recession of 2008–09. Also, they always use taxpayers'

As long as the economy and government are rigged in favor of the top economic 0.1%, we will all
lose they claim.
The above mentioned points that the OWS movement was based on can be discussed and interpreted
in differing contexts. A Utilitarian would argue that what the wealthiest are the ones that keep the
economy going, and that by their actions, the rest can survive. Utilitarianism acts for what results
produce the greatest balance of good over bad for everyone involved. This is the internal struggle.
Do the actions of the economic elite produce enough good for greater balance of people involved?
Several key points to consider when analyzing would be how the actions affect people to different
degrees, how certain actions produce different results in different circumstances, and how will these
actions affect the greater good in the long run. OWS protestors claim that the income disparity
between the top 1% and the remaining population, along with lack of jobs are causing greater harm.
They want those who help create the economic downturn to be held more financially responsible for
helping to rebuild the economy. Criticisms of Utilitarianism would be what or who determines what
the greater good is. As a Capitalistic society, we are entitled to do with our money what we wish,
even if that means spending it unwisely, where it could be more beneficial to be spent other ways.

argument by writing Bartleby the Scrivener: a Wall Street Story. Bartleby is a short story left literary
critics wondering the true meaning of this bizarre story while only having as a clue the author's point
of view about the times the story was written, the 1850s. Melville uses his characters as tools to
show his opinion of capitalism in its beginnings. Bartleby and its characters offer a snapshot of
could be considered Melville stance about capitalism and all the calamities it brings to people like
selfishness, arrogance, and hopelessness.
First, the characters represent the diverse types of workers in a capitalistic economic system. What
makes capitalism the best of systems is the fact that businesses are controlled by individuals and not
the government. This gives a sense of hope to the poor of believing that hard work warrants total
success. The story offers how different people take the prospect of being a business owner. One part
of capitalism are workers who play by the rules and know their limits. Taking that into account,
Turkey is the epitome of conformism. Turkey's skills are good enough to do the job and his lack of
going the extra step suggests he is okay with it. Another aspect that leaves Turkey as the conformist
is that he never forgets his place. Anytime he

Causes And Effects Of The Wall Street Market Crash Of 1929
The Wall Street Market Crash of 1929 led to one of the most devastating and unanticipated
economic crisis in history worldwide known as the Great Depression. The effects of the Great
Depression were not limited to the United States, instead they expanded worldwide to different
continents ranging from South America to Europe. The Great Depression as it pertains to Europe
had a peculiar twist. Prior to the crisis, Europe faced challenges such as mass unemployment,
despair in poverty, and ignorant politicians who then saw it as a poor man's problem before realizing
the severity of the economy when the more fortunate who invested in stocks, lost entire earnings.
Similarly, South America relied heavily on their export led development model while being
blindsided by the crash because they had the goods to sell, but the recipients were not in the position
to purchase the goods causing them to greatly lose profit. There is no single definitive cause that one
can attribute to the market crash, but rather summarize it as a lethal concoction of economic,
political, and social turmoil.
Economically, the financial woes of the 1929 crisis developed by the greed of large financial
institutions such as banks and lenders who obtained more than they could handle. Furthermore,
people with steady income and secured jobs went out to banks and borrowed large amounts of
money from the bank. The bank being greed stricken, loaned borrows large amount of money loan
the borrowers couldn't pay back

Wolf Of Wall Street Quotes
Title: Wolf of Wall Street Author: Jordan Belfort Text: Novel I have never agreed on how anyone
could be so materialistic in the eyes of fame and wealth like Jordan Belfort. The Wolf Of Wall Street
written by Jordan Belfort is about a Former stockbroker and trader. Jordan Belfort tells his story of
how within 6 years he rose to the top with an investment business he created called Stratton
Oakmont from selling penny stocks. Jordan Belfort has left me disgrace of how such a human being
could be so evil and heartless towards himself and others. "Was this legal? Absolutely not" This
shows what Jordan Belfort will do to feed his desire for wealth, legal or not. However what Jordan
Belfort achieved was one of the most inspiring things I have ... Show more content on

Jordan Belfort had chose all the wrong decisions that he had done with his money but what I bring
out of the text the most was him and knowledge of money and business. Jordan was spending
thousands of dollars a day without thinking twice about it.
To me Jordan has been one of the most successful people I have heard of in a
business place in the shortest amount of time, from when he first started 22 to when he made the
most of his money 27. In 5 years Jordan had risen to the top of the world in being one of the most
successful people in the world. For me personally meeting Jordan would be a life long dream to hear
about how he made 49 million in just a

The Trinity Wall Street

  • 1. The Trinity Wall Street I found out about Trinity Wall Street on the Internet, as I browsed the list of religious organizations based in New York City. Trinity Wall Street has a website with url (http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/). The layout of the Website is good, and shows they update their site regularly and are in touch with the aesthetics of modern web design and usability. There is a lot of information, but the site still does not feel cluttered. At the top menu includes Calendar, News and Blogs, Congregational Life, Music, Faith Formation, Faith in Action, History, Webcasts, and the Gift Shop. There is also a search function. Before I visited the Trinity Wall Street Church in person, I browsed the Website thoroughly. I wanted to understand what the organization represented, and what their schedule of services was like. I learned that the Trinity Church is located on Broadway at Wall Street, and that their offices are nearby along with other service centers that are associated with the organization. Trinity's church is a traditional gray and brown stone building, which contrasts nicely with the surrounding glass skyscrapers and is keeping with New York's diverse culture and way of life. The churchyard is surrounded by a black iron gate. There is a simple colonnade around the main church, which also has a steeple. At one point perhaps the steeple would have seemed larger but now it is completely overshadowed. It is a relatively small building in general, dwarfed by its neighbors. And yet ... • 3. Inequality And The Financial Crisis: The Wall Street Crash In the beginning of the financial crisis, most people normally will not realize or predict the disaster that is coming. As John Kenneth Galbraith discussed in "The Great Crash 1929," "only after the market crash were there plausible grounds to suppose that things might now for a long while get a lot worse" (pg. 90). During the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the most destructive stock market crash happened in the United States' history. There are numerous causes dedicated to this crash, such as, the inequality and the poor regulations of structures. The causes of this 1929 Great Crash are similar to those of the Financial Crisis in 2008. However, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 led to "a longest and deepest economic downturn in the United States' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many researchers propose and suggest that inequality is the main factor that leads to a financial crisis and there is a casual connection between inequality and severe downturns. In the 1929 Financial Crisis, inequality refers to the corrupted distribution of income among the citizens. In the 1928, the income unequal distribution became the most extreme point in the United States since the richest five percent of the population held more than one–third of all income of the United States' citizens. From Galbraith's words "the proportion of personal income received in the form of interest, dividends, and rent – the income, broadly speaking, of the well–to–do – was about twice as great as in the years following the Second World War" (pg. 177), it showed that the rich were gaining more power and wealth, in different forms. As the five percent of the population held the large proportion of the United States' economy, this means that the rest of the population, especially those who were originally poor, were suffering just for living. From this fact, it proves that, at that time, "the economy was dependent on a high level of investment or a high level of luxury consumer spending or both" (pg.177). When the economy is highly relying on only a few people, it becomes less stable and is more likely to suffer from big swings because these people were not able to buy large quantities of everyday needed items. Because the rich invested in new projects and bought luxuries, when they lose money and could not afford to buy things, the economy crashed. Inequality was one of the causes of the 1929 financial crisis because in the beginning of the decade, the economy was growing; therefore, it created an environment that buying stocks became a hobby for the rich. As the rich gained more money from stock market, it persuaded others that stock was easy money, which dragged more people to this market. Due to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If so, where does the sense of morality and humanity fit in within a world consumed by power and greed? Set a little over two decades since the last movie, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" is about a young up and coming Wall Street player a named Jacob Moore, who works as a stock broker, while moon lighting as a corporate CEO for a alternative energy source company. Unfortunately due to a series of events, his long time mentor commits suicide when the stress of losing his company gets to him, as a savvy investor moves in and forces him out. As the global economy teeters on the brink of disaster, Jacob partners with disgraced former Wall Street corporate raider Gordon Gekko on a two–tiered mission: To alert the financial community to the coming doom, and to find out who was responsible for the death of Jacob's mentor. Unfortunately for Jake, Gordon has other priorities in mind outside of rekindling things with his daughter, Jacob's fiance. Now, I won't say what happens next, as I wouldn't want to ruin the film. However, for those wondering if Gordon Gekko is a changed man or if he learned anything about life from losing it all, at the end of the last film, to becoming rich again, then all I can tell you is that you'll have to watch the movie to find out.

  • 8. Wall Street Crash Thesis The Wall Street crash of 1929 Introduction In late October 1929, years of great prosperity ended in a sudden halt and resulted in a great catastrophe. The Wall Street crash of 1929, also known as "The great crash" of "Black Tuesday", was the biggest stock market crash since the beginning of stock records. Many speculators lost a lot of money on big investments, banks also began to decline, and this later was followed by a depression across the world that lasted for about a decade and which inevitably caused a world war. USA in the 1920' To figure out why the stock market crashed, we will have to look back at the recent events in the USA. In 1919 USA's confidence started growing. Even 60 new companies had been listed on the stock exchange between March and September of 1929; these new companies added over 10 million shares to the stock exchange. President Hoover frequently asked his friends if he should be concerned about the stock market. He even received a memo from Thomas Lamont saying that there wasn't any reason to be concerned and he even ended the memo with "The future appears brilliant". 5 days later, Wednesday 23 of October 1929, the market crashed. It is unknown what was the cause of the sudden drop of automobile stocks. These drops of course led to wild and unstoppable last minute trades and millions of shares were sold. The next day "The Great Crash" began. The Crash Thursday 24 of October 1929, also known, as "Black Thursday" was a chaotic day. All stocks were dropping and this scared a lot of people. • 10. Summary : ' The Wall Street ' Essay Summary of Wall Street In 1985, Bud Fox is a young stockbroker in New York City at Jackson Steinem &Co. He wants to become bigger and better and work with his hero Gordon Gekko, a legendary Wall Street player. He became so obsessed with working with Mr.Gekko, that he called his office 59 days in a row in hopes to get through to him. Since that didn't seem to work, he decided that he would approach it a different way, and go and pay him a personal visit with a birthday gift, Gekko's favorite Cuban cigars. With Mr. Gekko being impressed by Fox's boldness, he offers to listen to his pitch. After Bud pitches him different stocks, and Gekko doesn't seem interested, he takes a turn and provides him with some inside information about Bluestar Airlines, that he learned from his father Carl, the union leader for the company. Gekko acting intrigued by the information told Bud he would think about it, but that he also "looks into a hundred deals a day, but only chooses one." Bud being upset about it not going as well as planned returns to his office, only to get a call from Mr. Gekko himself to buy into the stock for Bluestar Airlines. Gekko also gives Bud some capital to invest in other stocks. Unfortunately, the other stocks Bud chooses lose money, making Gekko lose faith in him. • 16. The Occupy Wall Street The Occupy Wall Street began in fall of 2011 in response to an email which was sent by online publication Adbusters. In this call–to–arms, those without jobs or other such responsibilities were urged to make their way to Manhattan for a long–term civil protest. The purpose of this gathering would be to decry the prevalence of corruption in the United States government, specifically as it related to Wall Street. (Economic Sociology and Political Economy)The physical movement began in a private New York City Park which was soon dubbed 'Liberty Square ', and continued to grow until mid–November of 2011 when the protesters were forcibly evicted by the New York police. While many assumed that this would be the end of the organization, they simply moved their protest online, where they still manage to maintain a presence on the political activism scene, and have expanded to include a plethora of other socio–political causes. One of the riskiest methods utilized by the Occupy Wall Street campaign was their use of protestor–created signs and photos, rather than professional advertisements. This personalized approach often proves to be far more productive than a mere print ad. Using the classic method of Logos, Pathos, and Ethos, they succeeded in manipulating the tendency of humanity to believe anything with a statistic attached to it, as well as their emotions and desire to believe in their fellow man, which in turn created an explosive cocktail of a movement and made Occupy ... Compare and Contrast 2 Great Newspapers Despite being printed for the same date, in this case January 30th, 2014, the distinction can still be made, and by this it can be said that if the titles of the newspapers were removed it would not be hard to distinguish one from the other. By placing the front page of the New York Times (NYT) and of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) side by side, the reader can piece together few similarities and a greater amount of contrast between the two. These are especially true when looking at the stories that were covered, the amount of space some stories took compared to others, and the slants many of the headlines took. These were the headlines from that day. On the cover of the NYT: childhood obesity, a Google business move, Russian's testing of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Visually looking at the two different covers, the amount of space given to the 2–3 major stories was about the same. In both, the biggest space was taken by the pictures. In the NYT, an image of stalled cars on the highway in Atlanta took the biggest space and the next biggest was an image of two children crying with a chard car behind them. In the WSJ, there was a collection of charts that displayed data about the stock market and another of stranded people sleeping in a store in Atlanta. Both of the newspaper share this trait, the most of space going to the pictures. Another similarity would be that the written articles shared length, for example in the NYT the story of obesity and Russian missile test were about the same and in the WSJ the articles of Reid and movie productions were also about the same. The clear distinction comes with the content of the pictures and again it revolves around the interests of organizations: money and social issues. One major difference and an unexpected part was the ad for Oracle in the WSJ which took up as much space if not more than the Reid commentary, the Russian test, or even the picture from the Atlanta crisis. The length of the Google article was also distinct, where the NYT gave a full column, the WSJ gave it a small paragraph. Another point to note is the display and position of the headlines or newsfeed. The WSJ had two broad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Causes And Effects Of The Wall Street Crash The Wall Street crash, also known as Black Tuesday, happened on October 24th in 1929.This day was to be remembered as the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States and one of the most important economic events ever. The crash has been researched globally by economists and has increased the understanding of risks in economy and stock market. In this essay, we will look at the stock market at the time, as well as causes and effects of the crash. A fundamental factor of the crash was the overheating of the economy and economic bubble created by the overpriced stocks that followed. From 1921 onwards, the stock market was doing very well and businesses were hitting profit records. () This caused stocks to become valuable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The crash was a very harsh time not only for the people who had been involved in the stock market. When the stock market fell and the banks wanted the loaned money back the speculators were struggling to scrape up enough to pay, but also ordinary people lost all they owned. Many investors who had gotten rich by shares lost everything. Statistics show that there was a spike in suicides in the years 1929–1930, a sign of many people being desperate as their household economy was ruined by debts to the banks. The Wall Street crash is still very relevant as it shows how greatly the people not even involved in the stock market are affected by it. A long term effect was that americans lost faith in the stock market. The general attitude towards buying shares was negative. In July after the crash the stock market index Dow had fallen by 90% from its highest in september 1929. No confidence in the market resulted in an unhealthy economy and it took 25 years for the stock market to recover. As explained above the Wall street crash has had major impacts of the US and world economy. It has been the subject of academic debate economically, historically, and politically from when it happened to present day. Occupy Wall Street Occupy Wall Street By: Jennifer Pates 2/1/2013 Professor Chester Galloway Bus301: Business Ethics I have to admit that even though the Occupy Wall Street Movement has been all over the news I did not truly understand the stance of it, nor did I really get involved with it. While doing research for this paper I was able to get a better understanding of the basis of the movement as well as the facts pertaining to it. The movement started on Wall Street but has spread across the US. The basis of the movement focuses on social & economic inequality, greed, corruption and the influence of corporations on the US government, primarily from the financial sectors of businesses. Even though OWS didn't has a set, specific list of demands, the overall consensus was clear, rein in the influence of big businesses, which cheated and manipulated their way to great wealth, in part by buying legislations, while leaving a trail of oppressed and impoverished victims in their wake. By naming the issue, the movement has changed the political discourse. The movement has unleashed the political power of millions of individuals and has issued an open invitation to everyone to be a part of creating a new world. If the protesters continue to focus on the gross inequality of outcomes in America, they will get nowhere. There is no equality foundation. Fairness means proportionality, and if Americans generally think that the rich got rich by working harder or by providing goods and services that were valued in a free market, they won't support redistributionist policies. But if the OWS protesters can better articulate their case that "the 1 percent" got its riches by cheating, rather than by providing something valuable, or that "the 1 percent" abuses its power and oppresses "the 99 percent," then Occupy Wall Street will find itself standing on a very secure pair of moral foundations. The stock fraud was possible because Jordan Belford, the protagonist of the movie sold penny stocks which are not regulated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It helps those who are in the lower part of the social ladder by giving them a chance to climb the ladder of economic opportunity. Wall Street also helps boost other industries within America, thereby making it vital for the American economy. As Wall Street is one of the most important financial institutions in the world and provides more positive aspects for the economy than negative ones. Wall Street is extremely important for the American economy. Jeff Madrick, the editor of Challenge: The Magazine of Economic Affairs, in his piece "Does America need Wall Street", cites historian Alfred Chandler, who argued that the majority of the money put into America during industrialization came from corporate profits (Madrick). Those profits were able to make technological advances for all Americans. Daniel Indiviglio, former associate editor of the Atlantic, states that Wall Street is also important to the economy because it helps banks create capital (Indiviglio). That bank capital helps create jobs in the economy by causing more money to be available to be put into the economy. Wall Street plays an important part in the economy, and without it, America would face financial hardships. This paper will also give examples on how the economic problems in 1929 were similar to the economic problems in 2008 in America. Lastly, this paper will talk about the different lessons learned from the very hard struggle of going through the Great Depression. One of the reasons the crash of Wall street occurred was because of credit boom and buying on margin, these two things were are basically the same thing. Many people thought the stock market would only go up so they would use the bank for credit and loans to purchase stock. Everyone who borrowed money from the bank had to repay it quickly after the market crash in 1929 because the banks needed money to pay back the money they borrowed from their consumers which they invested in stock. Irrational Exuberance happened when the stock broker questioned the value of the shares. • 33. The Wall Street Meltdown The Wall Street Meltdown The Meltdown is a PBS special on the events of the financial crisis of 2008, in a timeline format, revealing the thinking behind decisions made during the fateful months before the stock market crash in August of that year. Some financial gurus on Wall Street devised a plan to bundle several mortgages together into a group, and then selling that bundle to another group of investors looking to invest in securities. The lender did not need to earn money from the loans he was giving out, he merely gained enough of a profit from the bundling operation that billions were being made on Wall Street from 2005–2008. The problem is that these bundles were risky, and as credit unworthy individuals defaulted on their mortgages, the entire system crumbled into what is now known as the Stock Market Crash of 2008, and have subsequently lived during the Great Recession. The beginning of the crisis is marked as the downfall of Bear Stearns Financial. The company, with a triple A rating, was sidelined with problems of lack of cash flow, and a piling up of unpaid debts on housing mortgages. Bear Stearns invested heavily in these mortgages, because they were lucrative so long as the loans were being paid off. Foreclosures did not begin to pile up until after the 2005–2006 years of mass investment in the housing boom had already seeped into every corner of the United States. The 's Account Of Wall Street Whether it be popular culture such as television shows or movies or real life scenarios society always finds work structure to be a captivating and dare I say entertaining. Melville's account of Wall Street is an interesting one that explores characters that have some similar characteristics to modern day office settings. This paper will explore the different personalities described in "Bartleby the Scrivener", discover how that relates to modern culture, and conclude with why people find it captivating. First the narrator is introduced, not by name, but it is easy to infer about him by the way he attempts to describe Bartleby and the other workers. He begins by saying "Ere introducing the scrivener, as he first appeared to me, it is fit I make some mention of myself, my employés, my business, my champers, and general surroundings", which once again says a lot more about the narrators personality (p.2402). The excessive use of "my" proves this man is egotistically driven and when reading on he continues to refer more to himself rather than his employees. This idea of a self centered boss who views himself as superior to his cohorts does not sound familiar at all right? Wrong! Many people may even have personal experience that coincides with Bartleby's experiences of a self absorbed boss. "President Roosevelt issued Proclamation 2039 ordering the suspension of all banking transactions, effective immediately until it was decided by the government to be a safe bank to gain Americans trust back" (Wall Street). This stopped everyone from hating banks after all the money lost people did not trust banks, and with no one putting money in the banks they were closing. People could afford almost everything they wanted, they could go out and spend money and buy many consumer goods. America wasn't exporting its goods and wasn't importing any. There were 'protective tariffs' and these tariffs lead to not having any export or import. America was becoming isolated because America only wanted the goods that were made in the country to be sold. Another important factor was that banks made a decision not to support share prices. Banks themselves were involved in speculation and they did nothing to hold it back. American banks had lent $ 9 billion for speculating in 1929. Everyone was buying shares and selling them when the prices had gone down. Not only rich people but poor people as well. There were too many shares on the market and no one could buy them. The main problem was that there were so many shares on the market and there wasn't enough demand for them. The film is based on the written autobiography of Jordan Belfort, a convicted criminal of stock manipulation and securities fraud, as it narrates the story of his quest of achieving the American dream through illegitimate means, which ultimately lead to his downfall and closure of his firm. The film has been widely criticised for allegedly taking pleasure in the bad behaviour of the main character and his illegal brokering firm (Horne 2014). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The newsworthiness criteria of dramatisation and personalisation that regulate the construction of news have caused the underrepresentation of white–collar crime coverage, alongside with the narration of the lifestyle of the offenders instead of the crime and sufferings of the victims. This is due to the lack of moral panic created by white–collar crime, and the difficulty in creating 'folk devil's images due to the ambiguity in the victims. The simplification criteria also caused the positioning of white–collar crime news in the business press, which lead to this area of crime going unnoticed by the general viewers. The entertainment media objective to provide sensation for the audiences has glossed over the explanation on the consequences of the crime for people and society, leading to the glamourisation of the crime. The genre of comedy used in film has enabled the downplaying of the severity of white–collar crime. In terms of narrative structure, The Wolf has provided minimal space for the victims of crime and instead focused on the financial motivation of the offender to set the film in motion. The stock market permeated popular culture much more than it does today. In 1929, a British correspondent wrote, ""You could talk about Prohibition, or Hemingway, or air conditioning, or music, or horses, but in the end you had to talk about the stock market, and that was when the conversation became serious."[5] During the 1920s, stocks listed on the NYSE more than quadrupled in value. People believed that the market could only keep going up. A prominent Yale economist, Irving Fisher, is known for claiming in the 1920s that stocks were absolutely not overvalued and that, "The nation is marching along a permanently high plateau of prosperity."[6] Believing that stocks would just continue to increase in value, many investors bought stock without researching different companies' profitbablity. • 57. The History Of Wall Street 1 – The History of Wall Street Wall Street is widely regarded as one of the most famous streets in all of New York City, as it plays host to the longstanding New York Stock Exchange. While everyone knows that these days it features the latest and greatest stockbrokers, it wasn't always that way. Wall Street has a lengthy history, all of which emerged from very humble beginnings back in 1792. The following takes a look at Wall Street and details what has made it the stock market force that it is today. Back in the early 1790s the act of stock trading was somewhat secretive, as merchants would meet at the Corre 's Hotel to discuss how securities could be traded away from the auction block. A few months later these same merchants would sign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Steel Corporation merger. Wall Street was astounded, but it was clear that there were dark days ahead despite such success. In 1929 Wall Street was thrown into panic, when amidst true struggle it convinced the rest of the country that all was fine. This misconception saw both the poor and rich pump their money in to Wall Street, right before the market would dip, subsequently costing the country's residents billions. The 1929 stock market crash changed the course of history, as the country was plunged into darkness. During the 1930s and beyond the United States and Wall Street would try to rebuild. In many ways just that would occur, but as the decades passed, another dark day would loom on the horizon. It has been dubbed "Black Monday" and it is a day that no one who lived through it will ever forget. On October 19th, 1987 the Dow Jones Index would fall by a record setting 508 pints. Billions upon billions would be lost in a matter of hours. Since those days the ship has largely been steadied, despite a few blips such as the 2008 economic crisis. Wall Street and what it plays host to is now a key part of American culture, as it is the home of the New York Stock Exchange. Immortalised in history through sheer presence alone, it is the hub of all things stocks and shares; with it set to remain that way long into the future. 2 – Why Wall Street is important When you think of the world financial centres ... • 61. Do Consequences Depend on Motives in Julius Caesar by... An American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr once said, "All human sin seems so much worse in its consequences than in its intentions." In this statement, Niebuhr exclaims that the consequences of a situation are undeniably much worse than the motivation of one's instigation of their actions. This applies to the intentions and, more importantly, the consequences of the characters in both the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare and film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps directed by Oliver Stone. Even though some people have honorable intentions and mean no harm, the consequences can still be disastrous. In much the same way, those with fraudulent intentions also suffer in the end. Situations like these can be accurately viewed through both the play and the film. The characters Brutus and Jacob Moore have no other reason but to act in a worthy way. While Cassius and Gordon Gekko have deceptive intentions, consequences incur similar to Brutus and Jacob Moore. The intentions may seem like the most important consideration in a decision, but, in reality, the penalties can be the same no matter what the motives are. A motive to kill one's best friend requires deep thinking and a reasonable intention. Brutus, Caesar's best friend, has taken into consideration why he thinks killing Caesar is necessary. Although Brutus is Caesar's best friend, he has to come to conclusion that murdering him is his final decision when he asserts, "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome ... Mike Wilson Investing 10/29/15 Business Adventures For my book report I read an interesting book made up of 12 different stories or cases from American History called "Business Adventures: Twelve Classic Tales From the World of Wall Street", by John Brooks. Each chapter is different from the next having no connection between them besides them all being about investing and business. This book offers many different insightful ideas on how the stock market works and I'll take you through each chapter separately. The Fluctuation, chapter 1 is about the 1962 stock market crash and its sudden bounce back during the following day of trading. The crash of 1962 was the worst crash since the 1929 crash which dropped 38.33 points; the market dropped 34.97 points in 62. The crash offers some insights on how the market works pointing to a term that trader Joseph de la Vega coined called "antiperistalsis" thus describing the how the market reverses course, then reverses back again. A few suggestions on why this happened were individual investors with money that didn't have knowledge of the securities business. Secondly, investors that were playing with borrowed money that was forced to pay margin calls. Lastly, Mechanical delays could have possibly affected the how investors bought and sold. Because of the large number of transactions there was a problem with the recording and reporting trades so investors couldn't know what the prices were when they made a transaction. ... Another way is that, during an expansion, markets use their stocks to raise capital, which can then be used to reinvest to have higher economic output and hire more employees which eventually leads to having a better GDP. A Utilitarian would argue that what the wealthiest are the ones that keep the economy going, and that by their actions, the rest can survive. Utilitarianism acts for what results produce the greatest balance of good over bad for everyone involved. This is the internal struggle. Do the actions of the economic elite produce enough good for greater balance of people involved? Several key points to consider when analyzing would be how the actions affect people to different degrees, how certain actions produce different results in different circumstances, and how will these actions affect the greater good in the long run. OWS protestors claim that the income disparity between the top 1% and the remaining population, along with lack of jobs are causing greater harm. They want those who help create the economic downturn to be held more financially responsible for helping to rebuild the economy. Criticisms of Utilitarianism would be what or who determines what the greater good is. The Meaning Behind Bartleby As A Wall Street Story The Meaning Behind Bartleby as a Wall Street Story The Meaning Behind Bartleby as a Wall Street Story Is there such a thing as abstract literature? Melville definitely puts some weigh in favor of this argument by writing Bartleby the Scrivener: a Wall Street Story. Bartleby is a short story left literary critics wondering the true meaning of this bizarre story while only having as a clue the author's point of view about the times the story was written, the 1850s. Melville uses his characters as tools to show his opinion of capitalism in its beginnings. Bartleby and its characters offer a snapshot of could be considered Melville stance about capitalism and all the calamities it brings to people like selfishness, arrogance, and hopelessness. First, the characters represent the diverse types of workers in a capitalistic economic system. What makes capitalism the best of systems is the fact that businesses are controlled by individuals and not the government. This gives a sense of hope to the poor of believing that hard work warrants total success. The story offers how different people take the prospect of being a business owner. One part of capitalism are workers who play by the rules and know their limits. Taking that into account, Turkey is the epitome of conformism. Causes And Effects Of The Wall Street Market Crash Of 1929 The Wall Street Market Crash of 1929 led to one of the most devastating and unanticipated economic crisis in history worldwide known as the Great Depression. The effects of the Great Depression were not limited to the United States, instead they expanded worldwide to different continents ranging from South America to Europe. The Great Depression as it pertains to Europe had a peculiar twist. Prior to the crisis, Europe faced challenges such as mass unemployment, despair in poverty, and ignorant politicians who then saw it as a poor man's problem before realizing the severity of the economy when the more fortunate who invested in stocks, lost entire earnings. Similarly, South America relied heavily on their export led development model while being blindsided by the crash because they had the goods to sell, but the recipients were not in the position to purchase the goods causing them to greatly lose profit. There is no single definitive cause that one can attribute to the market crash, but rather summarize it as a lethal concoction of economic, political, and social turmoil. Economically, the financial woes of the 1929 crisis developed by the greed of large financial institutions such as banks and lenders who obtained more than they could handle. Furthermore, people with steady income and secured jobs went out to banks and borrowed large amounts of money from the bank.
