Barack Obama Qualities
Many presidents have come and gone. They came in all different shapes and sizes, ages and eras,
taking reins of America and leading it to where it currently stands as of right now. However, there
was one thing that had never changed. Each and every single one of these presidents were white.
Nobody knows why, but that is just how it was.. Until early November of 2008 where our first
African American President Obama was elected. He believed that everyone had equal opportunity,
and proved it by becoming President. The qualities that stood out most about Barack Obama was his
charisma, leadership, and sense of humor, which allowed him to flourish as president. Obama was
able to capture the attention of his followers due to his charismatic nature ... Show more content on

In times of desperation, a light joke could be just what is needed to help take away all the built up
negativity weighing everyone down. Most presidents have had their share of funny moments, but
they were all too watered down; every president was predictable. This did not apply to President
Obama however, as he was what was considered to be the first postmodern humorist to take office
(Heil para 5). Obamas humor belonged to a comedy sub genre, a type of humor that involved self
awareness, defined by irony, and had some sort of quirky references. He once spoke to an audience
about revealing his birth–video, which ended up being a clip from the movie Lion King. He
continued to say "it was a joke" (Heil para 8). He was able to lighten up the mood with a quick
reference to an old classic childhood movie that almost everyone knows. Barack Obama was able to
win over his people with his familiar, friendly humor. This was a huge factor to why the people of

Technology has Hindered the American Society Technology has become an important part of the
American lifestyle. Everything from work to school involves technology in some way, shape, or
form. For example, computers have made gathering and transferring information much simpler and
accessible. This is a benefit to society because people are able to become better educated in a
convenient fashion. Convenience has always been one of the main goals that technology has tried to
accomplish. All major inventions, from automobiles to the internet, were created to make life more
convenient and easier for people. Whereas automobiles made it easier for people to travel long
distances in short amounts of time, the Internet has made gathering information, doing business, and
learning much more convenient. Although convenience is a major benefit that technology gives us,
there are also negative effects on society as a result of new inventions. Not all technology is
beneficial, many new technologies have had a negative impact on our youth. Therefore, technology
has hindered the American society because it has made people more self–centered, encouraged
laziness in American youth, and made establishing relationships much more difficult.
Technology has hindered the American society by making people more self–centered, selfish, and
boastful. One of the ways that people are more self–centered is through social media. 7 Deadly

Analysis Of The Poem ' David Sedaris '
David Sedaris is an author, humorist, and comedian. He has published many books that contain his
short stories and essays. He was named Humorist of the Year by Time magazine, and he also
received the Thurber Prize for American Humor (David Sedaris, Radio Contributor, to Appear at
Durham).
Three of his works are "A Plague of Tics", "Now We Are Five", and "Our Perfect Summer." Sedaris
has a very particular writing style. His essays are generally about something he is close to, for
example, his family. Growing up with two parents and five other siblings, Sedaris often makes his
family or childhood the subject of his writing. Characters that are able to encompass a complete
spectrum of emotions and maintain a sense of humor tend to make a connection with the reader.
These characters are more realistic than a character that expresses a single emotion at a time and has
a set of personality traits to stick to. He writes about his family and friends in a realistic tone.
Sedaris also manages to portray them in an unbiased way. Sedaris gets his message across in a light
and conversational tone. Even personal or heavy topics are dealt with casual language. He makes his
writing funny; it is often packed with sarcastic humor.
"A Plague of Tics" is about Sedaris's relationship with his compulsive tendencies while growing up.
Young Sedaris's average day consists of a constant need of licking of light switches, tapping shoes
on his head, kissing newspapers, and more. Each of these acts

Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer
Robert B. Reich, Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer Reich starts his exordium
with a distribution of where American workers found themselves in the early 1990's in reference to
where almost all American workers were just 20 years before. Reich placed most of the workers that
contributed to the economy during the Nixon administration as being in one boat, analogous to the
famous quote by G.K. Chesterton, "We are all in the same boat, in a stormy sea, and we owe each
other a terrible loyalty." Under Reich's distribution you were still in a lifeboat, but the sea state and

Mark Twain is a pen name of Samuel Longhorne Clemens, one of the greatest novelist in the
twentieth century. As an American writer who was born in Missouri, Twain worked mainly as a
printer for local newspapers and as a riverboat pilot in his early career. Such experience provided
him the setting for two of his great works: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(1876) and its sequel, The
Adventure of Huckleberry Finn(1885), ?the great American novel?. These two works reflected
Twain?s attitude towards slavery, civil rights and anti–imperialism. His life was concluded as ?the
greatest American humorist in his age,? by New York Times and ?the father of American literature?
by William Faulkner.

This book, in my opinion, talked about freedom through the change of attitude towards black slave,
Jim. Talking about background, although Twain wrote?Huckleberry Finn?two decades after the
Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War, America?and especially the South?was
still struggling with racism and the after effects of slavery.?By describing the change of attitude
towards Jim, Twain reached his target, supporting anti–slavery.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,?The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?concerns itself primarily
with painting an idyllic picture of boyhood life along the Mississippi River. Though Twain satirizes
adult conventions throughout? The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,?he leaves untouched certain larger
issues that? The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?explores critically: the problem of slavery, was
mentioned indirectly in the Tom but was directly depicted in Huckleberry by using a character: Jim.
In conclusion, these two great novels remain the most popular works because of Twain?s diction and

Chuck Close Influences
Chuck Close an American photorealist artist who was born in the US during the 40's and as a result
lived his teens & 20's through the emergence of the American counterculture. As a result of the
politics and world events at this time, much change was experienced by Chuck Close and he became
a part of challenging social norms. These ideas and experiences are influential on his work and
impact in various ways on his unique style in his artworks, as seen in his 1970 work called "Big
Self–Portrait." During the summer of 1988, Chuck also suffered a sudden rupture of a spinal artery
which resulted in Chuck needing more assistance whilst he was working on his portraits. The
"Incident" as he calls it, also led Chuck to a change in style in his works. This, however, didn't mean
he was going to change as a person as he continued to stay true to himself as an artist. This severe
injury was one of a number of health problems that Chuck endured including his Facial Blindness
condition that he had obtained all his life. The limitations that these conditions placed on him lead to
the selection of subject matter, size of works and the exacting practice he employed to execute them,
seen in the image "Mark." As seen in the work "Mark" we see Chuck Close use a unique ... Show

Samuel Longhorn Clemens, Mark Twain
"I am not an American, I am the American" (Duncan and Ward). Quoting his friend Frank Fuller,
Twain boldly declares himself the embodiment of American living, and in all honesty, with some
right to do so. Twain was born in 1835 to parents John and Jane Clemens under Halley's Comet in
Florida, Missouri and later moved to Hannibal. He would later die under the same comet 75 years
later in 1910. He traveled along the American South and Midwest writing as he went, originally
moving west with his brother, Orion, in 1861 hoping to strike it rich in Nevada's silver rush

"The Anti–Imperialist League sprang into being to fight the McKinley administration's expansionist
moves... including the presidents of Stanford and Harvard Universities, the philosopher William
James, and the novelist Mark Twain" (Bailey, Kennedy, and Cohen 637). Twain should be an
inspiration to the masses to follow what you believe in. He incorporated these beliefs into his
writings. Further, Mark Twain covered a large range of areas in his writings transitioning from an
almost silly humorist to a serious writer who attacked his targets with much darker view of the
world. When he began, Twain was a humorist writing books like The Celebrated Jumping Frog of
Calaveras County, the book that skyrocketed him to fame in 1867 (Bailey, Kennedy, and Cohen
580). Later on he wrote possibly his most famous book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which
was a heartwarming tale of a boy who travels down the Mississippi River helping his friend and ex–
slave escape. In his story, that was very unusual for his time, he used the dialects of the people along
the river, something unheard of in his current era of writing. In his later years his wrote angrier and
harsh works such as The Mysterious Stranger a tale in which the devil visits an Austrian village in
the Middle Ages. "As Twain's career progressed, he seemed to become increasingly removed from
the humorous, cocky image of his younger days" (Gribben). Twain never

Status Anxiety: A Humorist Analysis
Truth is often hidden behind many of the jokes and comments made by comedians and humorists
that make people laugh today. It is the reason why the joke holds ground in respect to having a
humorous tone and nature; these comedians frequently call upon many social and political issues of
the time. In Alain de Botton's book, Status Anxiety, she argues that the role of humorists today is to
convey "messages" that could not easily be said elsewhere. Giving humorists a sense of impunity
with their work that is vital to society. Botton was right to state that humorists are vital to society
and carry out their work with impunity, yet not all of them should be regarded as highly as many of
them cause more problems than intended. The vitality of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Pranksters are one of the examples that often fulfill this requirement. Pranks are made to create
humor although quite too often these pranks push beyond their original intentions. Some of which
can escalate into serious or life threatening problems. The cause of these situations usually revolve
around the way a prank is executed as pranksters try to embrace the entire issue all in at once while
other humorist work to hint at issues of the modern world. Roman Atwood, a YouTuber, set up a
prank to act like he was stealing gas from a man's car, and when the man say him he began to attack
Roman. Then in another prank he acted as if he was carrying a gun very blatantly in front of people
until he came across a man who had a real gun; this act had increased the dangerousness of the
situation and only worsened relations. Even though both videos had the original intentions to
entertain the audience with humorous reactions. Illustrating how the "it's just a prank bro" mind set
to humor is actually more detrimental to society than beneficial. Humor's foundations are made up
of seeds of truth, from which comedy and laughter can grow from. Within these seeds different
types of issues are found that cast a wide array of topics in which are discussed or given question to
by humorists. As the evolution of humor continues to grow it can be seen that it will continue down
a darker road, as history has

Quotes From Bartleby The Scrivener
Lazy, stubborn, and strength are commonly construed with the American people. An American
archetype is a person that represents universal American human patterns. People have said that the
character Bartleby from Bartleby, the Scrivener demonstrates resemblance to an American
archetype. The novella is set during the mid 1800's on Wallstreet. During this time period there was
a rise in change and the world was moving at a rapid pace. Bartleby struggle with change and relates
to an American archetype by being lazy, stubborn and strong inside the work place. Bartleby is a
very ignorant man who commonly refuses to do the simplest tasks. He would often be asked by his
boss to copy down a legal document and he would just refuse. He resembles the human pattern of an
American archetype that was unwilling to accept change. Bartleby displays his unwillingness to
change when he is given the choice to either move out of his office or go to jail and says "at present
I would prefer not to make any change at all." (Melville 26) He believes that his life was perfect the
way it was. This was commonly seen in America during the time period when you had a battle
between the younger generation with new ideals and the older generation refusing change. Bartleby
is acting like the older generation by ignoring the need to move on and willingness to open up to
new ideals. It is even seen in today's culture often seen with gay rights and the fight between

Abstract: Mark Twain, a mastermind of humor and realism, is seen as a giant in world literature. His
humorous satire had great impact on the following men of letters; critics also attached significant
importance to it and put forward various interpretations. Noticeably, his humor⁃ ous satire finds full
expression in his famous short story, Running for Governor. In it, with humor and satire, he exposed

Twain owes it to himself, as well as to the great people whose suffrages he asks, to clear this matter
up. Will he do it?" These three words "the great people" are full of localism, also with humor to
demonstrate "my" rivals' extraordinary skills2. His words are colloquial, concrete and direct in
effect, and his sentence structures are simple such as "will he do it", but humorously sati⁃ rize
officialdom's true features.
His humor is not only of witty remarks mocking at small things or of farcical elements making
people laugh, but a kind of artistic style used to criticize the social injustice and satirize the decayed
romanticism. 3 Influences of Mark Twain's Humorous Satire
Twain's works, both in content and form, with more American characteristics, demonstrate
Americans' thoughts and feelings and reflect the manifold movements of American society by using
their own language and telling their own stories. Twain's life is difficult, but he wrote a large number

A Brief Biography of Mark Twain
Mark Twain was born on November. 30, 1835 in the small town of Florida, MO. Mark's birth name
was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. In 1839, the Clemens family moved 35 miles east to the town of
Hannibal, in Mississippi. Mark kept to himself and in doors in his early years because of poor health
and sickness. That was the case until he became years of age. He recovered from his illness and
started playing outside with the rest of the children. Growing up his Father was a judge and worked
a lot. He also attended private school. Sadly, when Mark was 12, his dad had pneumonia and he later
died. He took it really hard and left school. At 13 Mark became a printer's apprentice. He and started
working with his brother newspaper as an editorial assistant. That's exactly when he learned he
enjoyed writing.
When he turned 17, he left the town Hannibal to be a printer in St. Louis. As Mark became settled in
St. Louis, he changed his plan and became a river pilot apprentice. In 1858 he finally got his license
as an river pilot. The nick name Mark Twain came about from his time spent as a river pilot. It has
been said that it is a river term which means two fathoms or 12 ft. when the depth of water is being
sounded and measured. "MarkTwain " actually means " that is safe to navigate . Mark got his big
break in 1861 when the river trade were brought to an standstill by the Civil War. Mark would began
working as a newspaper reporter for several newspapers all over the United States.

My Experience In Poetry
A few years ago, I found myself at a local coffee shop for a poetry slam. It was around the same
time that I was trying to come to terms with life without my grandmother. She had been in the
hospital for quite a long time, and I was surprised I found even a moment to show up to the poetry
slam between my regular visits to the hospital, school, and other commitments. Nevertheless, I still
found myself before the coffee shop entrance. The aroma and warmth from the inside were
compelling, but I still hesitated. I had on a sweater and a jacket, but they were not quite enough. I
shivered as I nervously entered to shop, my poem clinched in the numbness of my hand. I had
prepared a poem as a final goodbye to my grandmother, but I felt like I needed it to be recited for
practice before I read it to her. Part of me still hoped that I would not have to read it to her at all. I
found the nearest empty seat and waited anxiously for my turn to read my poem. When my name
was called my heart falls to the floor, the paper in my hand quivered loudly, and the room was quiet
enough to hear it. I paced toward the stage and introduced myself and the title of the poem once I
got there. Then I began to read. At first I spoke with your basic monotonic "I'm frightened" style of
presentation, but I choke up. I have to pause for a second because there's no way I could continue
without crying out every word on the page. I began to almost scream the words: "Ask someone how

Chuck Close Analysis
Chuck Close is a modern American artist who has achieved success for his large–scale portraits.
Yes, I would describe Close's work as a form of language because it explored the established visual
presentation from the portraits. The subject of his portraits has been drawn from himself, his family,
and friends. His works explain that it has been driven by his lifelong learning difficulties. His
portraits tell everything about his struggle to remember the faces while drawing. Also, the uses of
the grid to break down every image that he paints into small incremental units showed that we could
easily focus on each part of his paintings. I would consider this exploration of an artist at work as
good and well deserving artworks in exploring the process.

Identity Of The American Identity
The American culture is made up of bits and pieces combined into one "American Identity."
Throughout the process of finding this identity, came with courage, religion, and fear. These three
concepts provide compelling examples and experiences that have shaped Americans into the best
country there is. Having courage in life is often half the battle. John Smith encounters so many
hardships that prove he dares to keep pursuing his goal. Eventually, after defeating and beheading a
succession of three Turkish officers in single combat in Rumania, Smith was wounded in battle,
taken as a prisoner and sold into slavery to a Turk. Smith was passed from place to place until held
prisoner on the Black Sea, he murdered his master and fled back to Rumania via Russia and Poland,
returning to England in the winter of 1604–05." (Smith, pp. 82). Most people at this point would
typically become slightly discouraged because he has gotten beaten up and is questioning if he can
accomplish this or fail. The lesson we should take from Smith in this story is that no matter how
hard things get if you have a goal achieve it. There will defiantly be hardships that come your way,
but nothing in this life comes easy. For example, the British encounter many hardships such as
hunger, sickness, and unfamiliarity. Being thrown into adapting to new situations is often hard. The
natives saw many things they were not accustomed to, a few of which include, muskets, clothes,
horses, compasses, and

Why Is Mark Twain Successful
In river boating, the phrase, Mark Twain, was used to ensure the safety of traveling through the
water. However, nowadays, the phrase associates more with the acclaimed author of classics such as
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: the father of American
literature himself, Mark Twain. Long before his fame and success, Twain went simply by the name
of Sam Clemens. Before fame, he devoted his days to learning the ways of the Mississippi River's
and was on his way to become a respected steamboating pilot. And so, it was there where he heard,
for the first time, the eventual, and one day, historical, pen–name: Mark Twain. During his time on

outcome: "I have never enjoyed anything in my life any more than I enjoyed dying that time....The
word had been passed and the family notified to assemble around the bed and see me off. I knew
them all....They were all crying, but that did not affect me. I took but the vaguest interest in it and
that merely because I was the center of all this emotional attention and was gratified by it and vain
of it" (twainquotes.com). Nevertheless, Sam regained his health, and within a week, was up and

Humorist Synthesis Essay
The concept of humor inciting change continues to be disagreed upon globally. Whereas mordant
humor demands mental depth to understand the purpose, blatant impunity messages are accessible
and easily created by humorists. Thus, humorists that are vital to society often rely upon humor with
an underlying message. As a result, de Botton's claim of humorists serving society is true, provided
that the message is dangerous to state blatantly.
Humorists revolve heavily around trending topics to help appeal to their audience. This practice
lends itself to humorists often becoming politically focused. Ideally, humorists would remove
themselves from appearing to be partisan but, as proven during the most recent presidential election,
humorists relied upon blatant jabs at both candidates. This resulted with audiences that found comic
relief through their dislike of candidates as opposed to the comedian's message. These circumstances
led to an election of the best of the worst, rather than electing candidates based on policy. This is an

The first time in which humor served a social function in America was when the African Americans
displayed "silent sabotage." Although this form of peaceful revolt also relied on faking sickness and
not working, humor was implemented by slaves in an act of cultural retention. Cultural blending
quickly led to cultural oppression for slaves; slave owners prevented their slaves from acting
dissimilar from whites. Thus, slaves relied on humor with underlying meanings as a form of
preventing cultural oppression. The slaves created stories and songs that developed into African
American folklore; this was allowed because it appeared to praise white people. This folklore
ultimately made fun of white culture and served as a message of rebellion that was otherwise too

The World According To Americans 2012 Summary
The world has a perception of the American people and it's not as flattering as we would like to be.
In Yanko Tsvetlov's image "The World According To Americans 2012" he illustrates in a brilliantly
colored map exactly how that perception appears to the rest of the international community. Using a
map of the entire world, Tsvetlov somewhat comically and perhaps accurately labels countries or
regions of the map in condescending statements or stereotypes (Tsvetlov). These labels are
Tsvetlov's interpretation of how the American people, either through lack of education or culture or
perhaps simple misconception, see various regions of the globe. Our arrogance and ignorance as a
nation has painted a picture for the rest of the world to easily judge us by. From tourists
misbehaving to soldiers acting foolishly abroad, the world sees too much of the wrong side of the
American people. Tsvetlov leaves his image open to much interpretation allowing the audience to
draw its own conclusion about what exactly he's trying to suggest. ... Show more content on

If interpreted in this fashion the map provides us with a simplistic Americanized view of the world
according to Tsvetlov. We can see the reduction of entire continents to comical phrases or the
summation of whole peoples to on word (Tsvetlov). In fact, the continent nation of Australia was
referred to as "kangaroo riders" reinforcing the idea that Americans characterize the world into
simple groups (Tsvetlov). Further evidence for this mentality towards the world can be seen in the
title given for all of Central America. Seven countries are degraded in to one offensive term

American Traditions And Qualities Of The United States Essay
For many international students, acclimating to American society can be troublesome and
occasionally disappointing. American traditions and qualities may be altogether different from those
of your nation of origin, and you may discover them befuddling. America 's populace reflects
surprising ethnic differences. Non–white individuals dwarf whites in a lesser expansive urban area.
Daily papers regularly utilize such terms as "Asian American," "Italian
American," and "Bedouin American" to mirror the ingenuity of different ethnic legacies inside the
Unified States. There are individuals whose skin is named white, dark, cocoa, yellow and red.
There are individuals who have numerous years of formal instruction and individuals who have
about none. There are the exceptionally rich and also the extremely poor. There are
Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Communists, Communists, Libertarians, and disciples of
other political perspectives too. There are Legal advisors, agriculturists, handymen, instructors,
social laborers, movement officers and individuals in a great many different occupations. Some live
in urban zones and some in rustic ones. Given this differing qualities, would one be able to
conveniently discuss "Americans"? Probably so, given that one is watchful.
Americans don 't more often than not see themselves, when they are in the

Persuasive Essay On American Exceptionalism
American Exceptionalism is a term used to define the ideal that America is far superior to all other
countries. It has been used to justify unfair actions and used to cover up flaws. Children are taught
from a young age that America is the model country, and the people living there can do no wrong. In
school, each bad thing that America has done in history is skimmed over, yet the accomplishments
and victories are taught in great detail. For years, Americans have hid behind the phrase American
exceptionalism as a way to not only avoid taking responsibility for their actions but to not push
themselves to be better, as they already consider themselves perfect. The concept of this
exceptionalism impedes the progress and evolution of mankind as they give up caring and trying to
better themselves. The great diversion for every mistake America or an American has made is the
main use of this ideal. Instead of acknowledging the bad things that they have done, Americans push
their poor choices to the side and pretend that they do not know what they have done. Instead, they
focus on the small good things they have done and do not even try to right their wrongs. Using
American exceptionalism as an excuse takes away guilt helps hide flaws and make people feel better
about themselves. From "The Madness of Donald Trump" Matt Taibbi writes "America, land of the
mad pig president. Shove that up your exceptionalism" (Taibbi). Not only does he show both how
insane and comical America is, he

The Myth of Money and Success
The American Dream is different for everyone, though it is most commonly associated with success,
freedom, and happiness. The concept of the American Dream seems to have dwindled from where it
was in the past few generations. It has gone from success, freedom, and happiness to having lots of
money and the nicest possessions. In today's society, we all hope and strive for this dream, but how
many actually achieve the American Dream? Is it a reasonable goal that Americans should strive for,
or is it a myth that only leads to self–destruction? According to Horatio Alger and Toni Cade
Bambara, they both believe the concept that the American Dream ... Show more content on

Today, as well as back in the 1800's when the story was written, most people's dreams are to achieve
success. This formally became known as "The American Dream". Although this may seem strange
for everyone to have the same idea, it really isn't when you look at it with an open perspective. Each
and every person's perception of success is extremely different and individual, which makes
everyone's dreams different. There may be people who strive for big goals, and there may be others
who take it one day at a time, achieving happiness on a less formal level. In comparing the time
period of the story to our society today, there are many similarities and differences to consider.
According within the world we live today, people tend to set much higher goals and expectations for
themselves, whereas, in Ragged Dick, it was more of a day–to–day type situation. When people set
smaller, more realistic goals, it results in more happiness and comfort in their lifestyle. However, in
today's world, Americans have become so incredibly competitive and successful, that the standards
have been significantly raised to the point where personal happiness is no longer good enough. After
reading a novel like Horatio Alger's Ragged Dick, you subconsciously make yourself realize the
important underlying message that he is trying to portray. To me, this message is to always be
optimistic, and no matter how bad your life is, it can always get better if you are honest,

How Communication Is Influenced By Varieties Of...
Our communication is influenced by varieties of circumstances and people. However, the most
important thing which affects our communication is our backpack, which means the environment
that we raised in. we carry this backpack every time when we communicate with others, so in this
essay I am going to demonstrate my interpersonal communication behavior. First of all, I am going
to demonstrate what about my communication is unique to my specific circumstances. The way of
communication is different when I was talking with Americans and Japanese. Whenever I talk with
American people, I try to be more open mind. Since I came here in NDSU, I have a lot of
opportunities to communicate with Americans. I realized that Americans are so friendly, so I made
effort to adapt American culture. Instead of that, when I communicate with Japanese people, I will
be more shy. In my experiences, Japanese people tend to do not like the too friendly people at the
first time. Thus, I pay attention to not so be friendly for Japanese during the ice breaker. As a result,
when I communicate with Japanese, I will be like a coconuts. It means that the first time is
unfriendly like the shell of coconuts but the inside is very sweet and flexible. Instead, when I
communicate with American, I am like a peach. The surface of peach is very soft but it has a hard
core, so as a similar as peach, I can be more friendly but it is hard to show people how do I feel and
think honestly. Moreover, when I am

Why Do You Say Moral I Say Huckleberry Finn
You Say "Morals", I Say "Ethics" American author and humorist Mark Twain's The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn is often labeled the "Great American Novel" due not only to its tendency towards
Realism and its controversial issue of slavery, but also the ethical and moral challenges faced within
the book. Huckleberry Finn, as the novel progresses, physically and mentally grows due to the
circumstances, decisions, and obstacles he endures; with such experiences come the gain of moral
development. However, despite whatever moral maturity Huck undergoes, his ethics remain
stagnant.
While there is an interchangeable use and common overlap between morals and ethics, they differ
greatly and there is an important distinction between the two. The ... Show more content on

His morals develop as his experiences end up changing his opinions. Many of Huck's original
principals evolve – particularly his views of death and lying. At first, Huck's grasp of death is
merely the concept of death, and one he views as exciting. In chapter two, Huck and Tom Sawyer's
gang speak and encourage death and violence nonchalantly – in fact, the boys order that should
anyone desert the gang, their family shall face the consequences of death as compensation of such a
betrayal: "they said that every boy must have a family or somebody to kill, or else it wouldn't be fair
and square for the others...and so I offered them Miss Watson – they could kill her" (Twain, 8).
However, Huck is later so shaken by the horror and death that he witnessed during the Grangerford
and Shepherdson murders that he says "I ain't a–going to tell all that happened – it would make me
sick again if I was to do that. I wished I hadn't ever come ashore that night to see such things. I ain't
ever going to get shut of them – lots of times I dream about them" (Twain, 115). Needless to say,
Huck's tolerance and views of death change dramatically and he now sees death as a horrible realty
rather than a romanticized concept. Huck's moral compass also develops in terms of the
acceptability of deceit. Huckleberry lies viciously to Jim at one point, for no reason other than for
his own enjoyment: "Well, this is too many for me, Jim. I

Black Humor in America
Black Humor
One of the most underappreciated and unrecognized forms of comedy is black humor. Black humor
often deals with events that are not often associated with other forms of comedy, such as war,
murder, insanity and death. The main reason that this form of comedy is so underappreciated is that
it requires some thinking on the part of the audience and many people are not willing to do that. The
types of humor that are popular today do not require much thinking and can be characterized as
one–liners. However, black humor has been used as an effective means of satire usually towards a
tragic event. One of the biggest misconceptions about black humor is that it involves race. Black
humor is not a form of African American humor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though this is such a great model of black comedy, Joseph Heller said that he was not aware
that it would be funny when he wrote it (Catch–22, Computer). In the story, Catch–22 is a military
rule that employs circular logic. An example of this is the rule that deals with avoiding combat
missions:
One may only be excused from flying bombing missions on the grounds of insanity; one must assert
one's insanity to be excused on this basis; one who requests to be excused is presumably in fear for
his life. This is taken to be proof of his sanity, and he is therefore obliged to continue flying
missions; one who is truly insane presumably would not make the request. He therefore would
continue flying missions, even though as an insane person he could of course be excused from them
simply by asking. (Catch–22, Computer)
The main themes in Heller's novel are paradox and contradiction. He used his novel as a way to
show the absurdity of war and to protest World War II. Another author, Kurt Vonnegut wrote
Slaughterhouse Five in 1969 as an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective,
using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, which Vonnegut
witnessed, as a starting point (Slaughter, wikipedia). The humor in this book comes from Vonnegut's
downplay of human mortality. He uses the phrase "so it goes" whenever dying is mentioned. Much

Privacy In The USA
Everyone has their own secret and private things covering around; we only show the world some
part of our lives and characters. Sometimes you need time to think, do homework or time to be alone
to realize what you love or what you need to do. People in the different nation has different thinking
about lifestyle. When I came to the U.S, I am so surprised and should learn more about the privacy.
Although Vietnamese people do not have and care about privacy too much, American custom about

more vivid and contain curiosity. The privacy is highly recommended for another country in the
world. In my opinion, I think privacy is essential for life. It should be maintained and promoted

Environmental Effects On Environment

Through industrial development we have diminished our soil, ruined farmland, trees and have
caused extinction of various species. All of these natural resources took over hundreds of millions
years to form and Americans have destroyed them all for the need to build more. David Brower a
prominent environmentalist says "we have diminished our soil, fisheries, fossil fuels and we have
changed the climate. We caused the extinction of countless species by half." Over consumption has
reached a point of harming Americans health and the overall environment. According to John De
Graaf, David Wann and Thomas H. Naylor "sixty–nine acres of prime American farmland are lost to
development." Once you cut down and pave over farms the land is gone forever. The very thing that
humanity relies on is being taken for granted. Americas increase in consumption does have benefits
but the negative effects on the environment, American health and family outweigh the positive.
What once was an abundance of natural resources is now becoming hard to find. The magnitude that
this type of industrial development has on the environment is irreversible. The damage we are doing
can never be undone. Through our constant need for more we have managed to change the climate.
American Farmland Trust points out how "24 million acres of agricultural land has been developed
since 1982." In Bloomington Minnesota on over 100 acres stands the Potomac Mills

The American Dream and Death of a Salesman Essay
The American Dream is one of the most sought–after things in the United States, even though it is
rarely, if ever, achieved. According to historian Matthew Warshauer, the vision of the American
Dream has changed dramatically over time. In his 2003 essay "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire:
Changing Conceptions of the American Dream", Warshauer claims that the American Dream had
gone from becoming wealthy by working hard and earning money, to getting rich quickly and easily.
He attributes this change to television game shows, state lotteries, and compensation lawsuits. He
also argues that most Americans are more concerned with easy money than hard–earned money, and
that Americans care mostly about material goods such as consumer products, big ... Show more

This shows Willy's and Biff's obsession with material goods and consumer products, just as
Warshauer claims. In addition, in Warshauer's essay, he observes that "rather than adhering to a
traditional work ethic, far too many Americans are pinning their hopes on 'easy money'". The
characters of Willy and his two sons, Happy and Biff, prove this. At the end of the play, Willy kills
himself in a car crash in order to get insurance money for his family, hoping that Happy and Biff
will use that money to start their own business. This shows that instead of continuing to work and
make money, he kills himself to get some "easy money" for his family. Also, Happy and Biff plan on
becoming successful businessmen, despite failing school. Biff dropped out of high school after
failing math, and Happy works as an assistant to an assistant in a department store, where he makes
very little money. Although Biff acknowledges his failure, Happy acts as if he had the greatest job
ever. He seems to be blissfully unaware of the world around him, and seems to only be interested in
girls than actually trying to improve his position. Both Happy and Biff seem to expect success to
come to them, hoping to make "easy money". Warshauer also comments that "in a society dedicated
to capitalism ... the ability to buy a big house and a nice car separates those who are considered
successful from those who are not". This is shown to be true in Death of a Salesman,

Mark Twain Is The Pen Name Used By American Writer

Mark Twain Mark Twain is the pen name used by American writer Samuel Langhorn Clemens.
Twain is an iconic American author and humorist who used both his personal struggles and gifts as a
writer, to impact society from the nineteenth century into the present. He came from a large family
and was born in Florida, Missouri, and lived from 1835 to 1910. Two of Mark Twain's works which
become a staple of his career were The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and the sequel The Adventures
of Huckleberry Finn. Like everyone else, Mark Twain had a personal life beyond his writings which
consisted of a marriage and children. Lesser known of his works, Mark Twain published a science–
fiction novel along with many short stories and essays. Toward the end of his life, Mark Twain
experienced both fame and personal struggle, which led to his inevitable death. Samuel Langhorn
Clemens was born on November 30th, 1835 to his mother and father, Jane Lampton Clemens and
John Marshall. He was the sixth born of their children, who all stayed in the small town of Florida,
Missouri until Twain was four years old. Then, in 1839, the family moved not too far, to the town of
Hannibal in Mississippi. Sadly, at the age of thirteen, Twain had to leave school to become a
printer's assistance after his father died of pneumonia. Few people know where the pen name "Mark
Twain" comes from. When he turned seventeen, Twain moved out of Hannibal to St. Louis

How Does Mark Twain Use Humour In The Adventures Of...
Mark Twain who's real name is Sir Langhorn Clemens is one of the best loved writers of America.
Twain's appeal to the readers is based on various factors. Some see in his humour the explanation for
his great popularity. Others feel that it is the least of his attractive features and he is more certain of
remembrance as a great novelist than as a humourist and satirist. Despite all these conceptual dilly–
dallying there is an understanding between him and his public. That's why he continues to have an
almost seductive charm for his readers. The reasons for his success are sentimental. America always
sees him with real affection, as the first of her writers to draw from the American soil, the material

by his stories about The Jumping Frog and The Blue Joy. These along with The Man that Corrupted

Analysis Of Mark Twain 's ' The Great Gatsby '
Mark Twain's works are some of the most studied and exalted when it comes to American Literature.
Twain lived in many different places in his life time, thus his works had roots in many different
areas of American Culture. From a silver prospector to a printing press worker, he held many
different jobs in these locations. He is also regarded as one of the greatest humorists of American
Literature. In fact, his works were considered to have no place in literature by many experts until the
1910's. He is regarded as one of the greatest American authors of all time. And of course, from being
such a prestigious writer, he has and award named after him, and it is to be given to the best
humorist of the year. Mark Twain was born November 30th, 1835 in Florida, Missouri when Haley's
Comet was in sight (Aller 13). He was born two months premature, but his superstitious mother
believed that it was a good omen that Haley's Comet was in sight (Koster 42). Four years later his
family moved to Hannibal, Missouri to grow hogs and farmed wheat, tobacco, and marijuana
(Camfeild)(Aller 15). He became an apprentice for a printing company at the age of twelve, and
began to study history in his free time (Aller 31). Eventually he worked for the same printing press
company in many different cities in the United States, all the while exposing himself to many
different cultures and ways of life (Gribben). After his job as a printing press worker, he became a

The Use Of Satire And Humor Is A Vital Function Of Our...
Satire and Humor is a Vital Function of our Society Humor and satire is an entertaining and
extremely effective method for highlighting social ideologies, challenging a governmental system or
an organization, exposing injustice, and encouraging positive change in perspective. In his book,
Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton asserts that humorists are a vital part of society as they are always
successful in communicating, conveying, and delivering their message or idea to the public and the
community. Humorists and satirists have demonstrated their vital role in inspiring freedom of speech
and thought, which motivates progressive changes, in political election campaigns hosted on TV
almost daily, and in Mark Twain's satire of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Comedians
occasionally and intentionally use offensive and insulting comments to get their message across,
however, these statements normally include protected opinions and beliefs about certain issues and
global topics. By orally speaking or writing their ideas and beliefs, satirists and comedians act as an
example for the public to use their freedom of speech and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Criticism And Analysis Of Puddn ' Head Wilson '
Criticism and Analysis of Puddn'head Wilson
In American history, we have good authors, great authors and some bad. One of the most famous
authors and probably the greatest that everyone has heard of is Mark Twain. Twain was an American
author and humorist in American Literature. Twain was born in Florida, Missouri, on November 30,
1835. In his first writing, he adopted his pen–name from a well–known call of the man sounding the
river in shallow places.
In 1861 he went to Carson City, Nevada, as secretary to his brother. For two years he edited papers
and moved from place to place. In 1867 he visited France, Italy and Palestine. Twains two greatest
masterpieces, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were drawn from his childhood experiences and
the life on the Mississippi frontier. Mark Twain has a legacy as an American author because of his
books like Huckleberry Fin and Pudd'nhead Wilson. He put his self in the American popular culture
of literature. Twains novels and stories are popular in the media. His work has been remade into
comic strips, children's films, and cartoons. His image and his words have also figured in
commercial advertising campaigns. He is one of the greatest.

Analyzing Benjamin Franklin's Political Career
Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston, MA. And died on April 17, 1790.
During his 84 years of life he accomplished many things. Such as various inventions and the fall of
the British monarchy. Though he was a hero in many different ways, he was also a very sinful
person.
Ben's most famous times of his life was during his political career. He started his political career as
the Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly between May 1764 and October 1764. He was also the
very first Postmaster General, between the times of July 26, 1775 and November 7, 1776. Most
likely his most known career was when he was the sixth President of Pennsylvania. Franklin was
also a well–known author, printer, political theorist, politician, freemason, postmaster, scientist,
inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. He was also a major figure in the
American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding
electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, among
other inventions. He facilitated many civic organizations, including Philadelphia's fire department
and the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution. His colorful life and legacy of

Mark Twain's Influence on American Literature Essay examples
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by the pseudonym Mark Twain, has been central to
American literature for over a century. His seemingly effortless diction accurately exemplified
America's southern culture. From his early experiences in journalism to his most famous fictional
works, Twain has remained relevant to American writing as well as pop culture. His iconic works
are timeless and have given inspiration the youth of America for decades. He distanced himself from
formal writing and became one of the most celebrated humorists. Mark Twain's use of the common
vernacular set him apart from authors of his era giving his readers a sense of familiarity and
emotional connection to his characters and himself.

He was one of the first to descriptively verbalize southern speech in writing. Not only was it
uncommon for people of Twain's era to write in vernacular, it was new–fangled for him to write
about the subject of vernacular itself. It is a difficult task to write about, much less in, a dialect to
which one is foreign without appearing foolish. Twain's ability to both with ease marked him as an
authority on the subject.
Thus, Twain's early experiences in life helped him to flesh out a well–rounded vocabulary and
sparked his interests in adventure and traveling. Twain spent his boyhood in the riverside town of
Hannibal, Missouri where he, "experienced the excitement of the colorful steamboats that docked at
the town wharf, bringing comedians, singers, gamblers, swindlers, slave dealers, and assorted other
river travelers" (Gribben). His exposure to much of the world at a young age opened his eyes to
people groups, travel, and differences in dialect that would all become subject matter of his later
writing. Twain wrote in Life on the Mississippi that he became acquainted with all the "different
types of human nature that are to be found in fiction, biography, or history" while he worked as a
steamboat apprentice (128). The diverse people and places he met during his time on the river all
became awe–inspiring to him and served as the foundation for his works to come. Countless

Essay on The Malignant American in Surfacing
The Malignant American in Surfacing
Before traveling through Europe last summer, friends advised me to avoid being identified as an
American. Throughout Europe, the term American connotes arrogance and insensitivity to local
culture. In line with the foregoing stereotype, the unnamed narrator's use of the term American in
Margaret Atwood's Surfacing is used to describe individuals of any nationality who are
unempathetic and thus destructive. The narrator, however, uses the word in the context of her guilt
over her abortion and consequent emotional numbness. The narrator's vituperative definition of
American as an individual who is unempathetic and destructive is largely attributable to the
narrator's projection of her own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Emotional numbness is the logical cause for such behaviour, as a lack of empathy enables an
individual to act heedless of negative consequences to others.
The narrator's scathing treatment of Americans during the foregoing encounter is representative of
the treatment she affords them throughout Surfacing. Americans are variously described as
"tapeworms" (129), "loon killers" (121), analogues to Hitler (129) and attackers (183). Although the
narrator frequently applies the label American to people who she thinks are citizens of the United
States (US), she ultimately divorces the term from nationality. When the narrator discovers that two
men who wantonly killed a heron are Canadian, she states, "It doesn't matter what country they're
from, my head said, they're still Americans" (129). In the narrator's mind, American is a term
describing those who are emotionally numb and are capable of inflicting pain on others.
Given the intensity of the narrator's feelings about the term American, it clearly has special
significance in her mind. This significance stems from an abortion she underwent as a result of a
relationship with a married man. The effect of the abortion is alluded to when Anna is reading the
narrator's palm: "'You had a good childhood but then there's this funny break'" (8). The abortion
traumatised the narrator, leaving her with a

Mark Twain- American Author
Some of the most riveting books in not just American literature but in all of history, was written by
this famous author. Twain, an American writer, is one of the major authors of American fiction.
Also, he is considered the greatest humorist in American literature (Alan Gribben, np). Mark Twain
was influenced by the society's conditions he lived in, hence the incorporation of much of it in his
writing. Growing up in the 1870s, Twain's society was much different than growing up now. He
grew up during the outbreak of the civil war and he lived during the time of major cynical political
corruption that began in the late 1860s all the way to 1900. He was also raised during a time where
slave–holding was acceptable, and encouraged. Under his father's influence, he was told that slavery
was justified through biblical principles. The majority of people in Hannibal, where Twain grew up,
thought this and was the reason why everyone was proslavery. "The local pulpit taught us that God
approved it, that it was a holy thing and that the doubter need only look in the Bible if he wished to
settle his mind and then the texts were read aloud to us to make the matter sure; if the slaves
themselves had an aversion to slavery, they were wise and said nothing..." (Twain 212 ) This quote
portrayed how the people Twain grew up with encouraged slavery because it was accepted by God.
However, even though Twain grew up in this condition he was never a supporter of slavery or
racism. This point

Huckleberry Finn Literary Techniques
In the year 1884, American author and humorist Mark Twain published The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn, the sequel to his most famous piece, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. This sequel
was very successful. Its success can be attributed to Mark Twain's appealing writing style and
tasteful use of literary techniques. The most prominent techniques used in this classic novel include
diction, language, irony, imagery, as well as tone.
In the novel, Mark Twain uses diction and language to achieve more authentic characters. The
dialogue and narration from the main protagonist, Huckleberry Finn, is simple and very informal. It
makes it clear that he is a young, uneducated, "backwoods South–Western" boy living in the 1830s.

Barack Obama Qualities

  • 1. Barack Obama Qualities Many presidents have come and gone. They came in all different shapes and sizes, ages and eras, taking reins of America and leading it to where it currently stands as of right now. However, there was one thing that had never changed. Each and every single one of these presidents were white. Nobody knows why, but that is just how it was.. Until early November of 2008 where our first African American President Obama was elected. He believed that everyone had equal opportunity, and proved it by becoming President. The qualities that stood out most about Barack Obama was his charisma, leadership, and sense of humor, which allowed him to flourish as president. Obama was able to capture the attention of his followers due to his charismatic nature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In times of desperation, a light joke could be just what is needed to help take away all the built up negativity weighing everyone down. Most presidents have had their share of funny moments, but they were all too watered down; every president was predictable. This did not apply to President Obama however, as he was what was considered to be the first postmodern humorist to take office (Heil para 5). Obamas humor belonged to a comedy sub genre, a type of humor that involved self awareness, defined by irony, and had some sort of quirky references. He once spoke to an audience about revealing his birth–video, which ended up being a clip from the movie Lion King. He continued to say "it was a joke" (Heil para 8). He was able to lighten up the mood with a quick reference to an old classic childhood movie that almost everyone knows. Barack Obama was able to win over his people with his familiar, friendly humor. This was a huge factor to why the people of America supported ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Technology Has Hindered The American Society Armineh Geragossian Professor M. Basalla ESL 151 November 29, 2016 Technology has Hindered the American Society Technology has become an important part of the American lifestyle. Everything from work to school involves technology in some way, shape, or form. For example, computers have made gathering and transferring information much simpler and accessible. This is a benefit to society because people are able to become better educated in a convenient fashion. Convenience has always been one of the main goals that technology has tried to accomplish. All major inventions, from automobiles to the internet, were created to make life more convenient and easier for people. Whereas automobiles made it easier for people to travel long distances in short amounts of time, the Internet has made gathering information, doing business, and learning much more convenient. Although convenience is a major benefit that technology gives us, there are also negative effects on society as a result of new inventions. Not all technology is beneficial, many new technologies have had a negative impact on our youth. Therefore, technology has hindered the American society because it has made people more self–centered, encouraged laziness in American youth, and made establishing relationships much more difficult. Technology has hindered the American society by making people more self–centered, selfish, and boastful. One of the ways that people are more self–centered is through social media. 7 Deadly ... • 5. Analysis Of The Poem ' David Sedaris ' David Sedaris is an author, humorist, and comedian. He has published many books that contain his short stories and essays. He was named Humorist of the Year by Time magazine, and he also received the Thurber Prize for American Humor (David Sedaris, Radio Contributor, to Appear at Durham). Three of his works are "A Plague of Tics", "Now We Are Five", and "Our Perfect Summer." Sedaris has a very particular writing style. His essays are generally about something he is close to, for example, his family. Growing up with two parents and five other siblings, Sedaris often makes his family or childhood the subject of his writing. Characters that are able to encompass a complete spectrum of emotions and maintain a sense of humor tend to make a connection with the reader. These characters are more realistic than a character that expresses a single emotion at a time and has a set of personality traits to stick to. He writes about his family and friends in a realistic tone. Sedaris also manages to portray them in an unbiased way. Sedaris gets his message across in a light and conversational tone. Even personal or heavy topics are dealt with casual language. He makes his writing funny; it is often packed with sarcastic humor. "A Plague of Tics" is about Sedaris's relationship with his compulsive tendencies while growing up. Young Sedaris's average day consists of a constant need of licking of light switches, tapping shoes on his head, kissing newspapers, and more. Each of these acts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reich, Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer Reich starts his exordium with a distribution of where American workers found themselves in the early 1990's in reference to where almost all American workers were just 20 years before. Reich placed most of the workers that contributed to the economy during the Nixon administration as being in one boat, analogous to the famous quote by G.K. Chesterton, "We are all in the same boat, in a stormy sea, and we owe each other a terrible loyalty." Mark Twain is a pen name of Samuel Longhorne Clemens, one of the greatest novelist in the twentieth century. As an American writer who was born in Missouri, Twain worked mainly as a printer for local newspapers and as a riverboat pilot in his early career. Such experience provided him the setting for two of his great works: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(1876) and its sequel, The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn(1885), ?the great American novel?. These two works reflected Twain?s attitude towards slavery, civil rights and anti–imperialism. His life was concluded as ?the greatest American humorist in his age,? by New York Times and ?the father of American literature? by William Faulkner. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This book, in my opinion, talked about freedom through the change of attitude towards black slave, Jim. Talking about background, although Twain wrote?Huckleberry Finn?two decades after the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War, America?and especially the South?was still struggling with racism and the after effects of slavery.?By describing the change of attitude towards Jim, Twain reached his target, supporting anti–slavery. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,?The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?concerns itself primarily with painting an idyllic picture of boyhood life along the Mississippi River. Though Twain satirizes adult conventions throughout? The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,?he leaves untouched certain larger issues that? The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?explores critically: the problem of slavery, was mentioned indirectly in the Tom but was directly depicted in Huckleberry by using a character: Jim. Chuck Close Influences Chuck Close an American photorealist artist who was born in the US during the 40's and as a result lived his teens & 20's through the emergence of the American counterculture. As a result of the politics and world events at this time, much change was experienced by Chuck Close and he became a part of challenging social norms. These ideas and experiences are influential on his work and impact in various ways on his unique style in his artworks, as seen in his 1970 work called "Big Self–Portrait." During the summer of 1988, Chuck also suffered a sudden rupture of a spinal artery which resulted in Chuck needing more assistance whilst he was working on his portraits. The "Incident" as he calls it, also led Chuck to a change in style in his works. This, however, didn't mean he was going to change as a person as he continued to stay true to himself as an artist. This severe injury was one of a number of health problems that Chuck endured including his Facial Blindness condition that he had obtained all his life. The limitations that these conditions placed on him lead to the selection of subject matter, size of works and the exacting practice he employed to execute them, seen in the image "Mark." • 13. Samuel Longhorn Clemens, Mark Twain "I am not an American, I am the American" (Duncan and Ward). Quoting his friend Frank Fuller, Twain boldly declares himself the embodiment of American living, and in all honesty, with some right to do so. Twain was born in 1835 to parents John and Jane Clemens under Halley's Comet in Florida, Missouri and later moved to Hannibal. He would later die under the same comet 75 years later in 1910. He traveled along the American South and Midwest writing as he went, originally moving west with his brother, Orion, in 1861 hoping to strike it rich in Nevada's silver rush (Ramussen). Twain's real name was Samuel Longhorne Clemens but took on the name Mark Twain as a reference to a measurement in his job as steamboat captain, a job that would ... "The Anti–Imperialist League sprang into being to fight the McKinley administration's expansionist moves... including the presidents of Stanford and Harvard Universities, the philosopher William James, and the novelist Mark Twain" (Bailey, Kennedy, and Cohen 637). Twain should be an inspiration to the masses to follow what you believe in. He incorporated these beliefs into his writings. Further, Mark Twain covered a large range of areas in his writings transitioning from an almost silly humorist to a serious writer who attacked his targets with much darker view of the world. When he began, Twain was a humorist writing books like The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, the book that skyrocketed him to fame in 1867 (Bailey, Kennedy, and Cohen 580). Later on he wrote possibly his most famous book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which was a heartwarming tale of a boy who travels down the Mississippi River helping his friend and ex– slave escape. In his story, that was very unusual for his time, he used the dialects of the people along the river, something unheard of in his current era of writing. In his later years his wrote angrier and harsh works such as The Mysterious Stranger a tale in which the devil visits an Austrian village in the Middle Ages. "As Twain's career progressed, he seemed to become increasingly removed from the humorous, cocky image of his younger days" (Gribben). Twain never ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is the reason why the joke holds ground in respect to having a humorous tone and nature; these comedians frequently call upon many social and political issues of the time. In Alain de Botton's book, Status Anxiety, she argues that the role of humorists today is to convey "messages" that could not easily be said elsewhere. Giving humorists a sense of impunity with their work that is vital to society. Pranks are made to create humor although quite too often these pranks push beyond their original intentions. Some of which can escalate into serious or life threatening problems. The cause of these situations usually revolve around the way a prank is executed as pranksters try to embrace the entire issue all in at once while other humorist work to hint at issues of the modern world. Roman Atwood, a YouTuber, set up a prank to act like he was stealing gas from a man's car, and when the man say him he began to attack Roman. Then in another prank he acted as if he was carrying a gun very blatantly in front of people until he came across a man who had a real gun; this act had increased the dangerousness of the situation and only worsened relations. Even though both videos had the original intentions to entertain the audience with humorous reactions. Illustrating how the "it's just a prank bro" mind set to humor is actually more detrimental to society than beneficial. • 24. My Experience In Poetry A few years ago, I found myself at a local coffee shop for a poetry slam. It was around the same time that I was trying to come to terms with life without my grandmother. She had been in the hospital for quite a long time, and I was surprised I found even a moment to show up to the poetry slam between my regular visits to the hospital, school, and other commitments. Nevertheless, I still found myself before the coffee shop entrance. The aroma and warmth from the inside were compelling, but I still hesitated. I had on a sweater and a jacket, but they were not quite enough. I shivered as I nervously entered to shop, my poem clinched in the numbness of my hand. I had prepared a poem as a final goodbye to my grandmother, but I felt like I needed it to be recited for practice before I read it to her. Part of me still hoped that I would not have to read it to her at all. I found the nearest empty seat and waited anxiously for my turn to read my poem. When my name was called my heart falls to the floor, the paper in my hand quivered loudly, and the room was quiet enough to hear it. I paced toward the stage and introduced myself and the title of the poem once I got there. Then I began to read. At first I spoke with your basic monotonic "I'm frightened" style of presentation, but I choke up. I have to pause for a second because there's no way I could continue without crying out every word on the page. I began to almost scream the words: "Ask someone how they feel about death, ... Yes, I would describe Close's work as a form of language because it explored the established visual presentation from the portraits. The subject of his portraits has been drawn from himself, his family, and friends. His works explain that it has been driven by his lifelong learning difficulties. His portraits tell everything about his struggle to remember the faces while drawing. Also, the uses of the grid to break down every image that he paints into small incremental units showed that we could easily focus on each part of his paintings. I would consider this exploration of an artist at work as good and well deserving artworks in exploring the process. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. Identity Of The American Identity The American culture is made up of bits and pieces combined into one "American Identity." Throughout the process of finding this identity, came with courage, religion, and fear. These three concepts provide compelling examples and experiences that have shaped Americans into the best country there is. Having courage in life is often half the battle. John Smith encounters so many hardships that prove he dares to keep pursuing his goal. Eventually, after defeating and beheading a succession of three Turkish officers in single combat in Rumania, Smith was wounded in battle, taken as a prisoner and sold into slavery to a Turk. Smith was passed from place to place until held prisoner on the Black Sea, he murdered his master and fled back to Rumania via Russia and Poland, returning to England in the winter of 1604–05." (Smith, pp. 82). Most people at this point would typically become slightly discouraged because he has gotten beaten up and is questioning if he can accomplish this or fail. The lesson we should take from Smith in this story is that no matter how hard things get if you have a goal achieve it. There will defiantly be hardships that come your way, but nothing in this life comes easy. For example, the British encounter many hardships such as hunger, sickness, and unfamiliarity. Being thrown into adapting to new situations is often hard. The natives saw many things they were not accustomed to, a few of which include, muskets, clothes, horses, compasses, and ... However, nowadays, the phrase associates more with the acclaimed author of classics such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: the father of American literature himself, Mark Twain. • 32. Humorist Synthesis Essay The concept of humor inciting change continues to be disagreed upon globally. Whereas mordant humor demands mental depth to understand the purpose, blatant impunity messages are accessible and easily created by humorists. Thus, humorists that are vital to society often rely upon humor with an underlying message. As a result, de Botton's claim of humorists serving society is true, provided that the message is dangerous to state blatantly. Humorists revolve heavily around trending topics to help appeal to their audience. This practice lends itself to humorists often becoming politically focused. Ideally, humorists would remove themselves from appearing to be partisan but, as proven during the most recent presidential election, humorists relied upon blatant jabs at both candidates. This resulted with audiences that found comic relief through their dislike of candidates as opposed to the comedian's message. These circumstances led to an election of the best of the worst, rather than electing candidates based on policy. This is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, slaves relied on humor with underlying meanings as a form of preventing cultural oppression. In Yanko Tsvetlov's image "The World According To Americans 2012" he illustrates in a brilliantly colored map exactly how that perception appears to the rest of the international community. Using a map of the entire world, Tsvetlov somewhat comically and perhaps accurately labels countries or regions of the map in condescending statements or stereotypes (Tsvetlov). These labels are Tsvetlov's interpretation of how the American people, either through lack of education or culture or perhaps simple misconception, see various regions of the globe. Our arrogance and ignorance as a nation has painted a picture for the rest of the world to easily judge us by. American traditions and qualities may be altogether different from those of your nation of origin, and you may discover them befuddling. America 's populace reflects surprising ethnic differences. Non–white individuals dwarf whites in a lesser expansive urban area. Daily papers regularly utilize such terms as "Asian American," "Italian American," and "Bedouin American" to mirror the ingenuity of different ethnic legacies inside the Unified States. There are individuals whose skin is named white, dark, cocoa, yellow and red. There are individuals who have numerous years of formal instruction and individuals who have about none. There are the exceptionally rich and also the extremely poor. There are Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Communists, Communists, Libertarians, and disciples of other political perspectives too. There are Legal advisors, agriculturists, handymen, instructors, social laborers, movement officers and individuals in a great many different occupations. Some live in urban zones and some in rustic ones. Given this differing qualities, would one be able to conveniently discuss "Americans"? Probably so, given that one is watchful. • 40. Persuasive Essay On American Exceptionalism American Exceptionalism is a term used to define the ideal that America is far superior to all other countries. It has been used to justify unfair actions and used to cover up flaws. Children are taught from a young age that America is the model country, and the people living there can do no wrong. In school, each bad thing that America has done in history is skimmed over, yet the accomplishments and victories are taught in great detail. For years, Americans have hid behind the phrase American exceptionalism as a way to not only avoid taking responsibility for their actions but to not push themselves to be better, as they already consider themselves perfect. The concept of this exceptionalism impedes the progress and evolution of mankind as they give up caring and trying to better themselves. The great diversion for every mistake America or an American has made is the main use of this ideal. Instead of acknowledging the bad things that they have done, Americans push their poor choices to the side and pretend that they do not know what they have done. Instead, they focus on the small good things they have done and do not even try to right their wrongs. Using American exceptionalism as an excuse takes away guilt helps hide flaws and make people feel better about themselves. Each and every person's perception of success is extremely different and individual, which makes everyone's dreams different. Black humor often deals with events that are not often associated with other forms of comedy, such as war, murder, insanity and death. The main reason that this form of comedy is so underappreciated is that it requires some thinking on the part of the audience and many people are not willing to do that. The types of humor that are popular today do not require much thinking and can be characterized as one–liners. However, black humor has been used as an effective means of satire usually towards a tragic event. One of the biggest misconceptions about black humor is that it involves race. Even though this is such a great model of black comedy, Joseph Heller said that he was not aware that it would be funny when he wrote it (Catch–22, Computer). In the story, Catch–22 is a military rule that employs circular logic. An example of this is the rule that deals with avoiding combat missions: One may only be excused from flying bombing missions on the grounds of insanity; one must assert one's insanity to be excused on this basis; one who requests to be excused is presumably in fear for his life. This is taken to be proof of his sanity, and he is therefore obliged to continue flying missions; one who is truly insane presumably would not make the request. He therefore would continue flying missions, even though as an insane person he could of course be excused from them simply by asking. (Catch–22, Computer) The main themes in Heller's novel are paradox and contradiction. He used his novel as a way to show the absurdity of war and to protest World War II. Another author, Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five in 1969 as an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point (Slaughter, wikipedia). Environmental Effects On Environment Shavonne Devine Prof. Welsh Eng 1A (6403) 18 Sept. 2017 Through industrial development we have diminished our soil, ruined farmland, trees and have caused extinction of various species. All of these natural resources took over hundreds of millions years to form and Americans have destroyed them all for the need to build more. David Brower a prominent environmentalist says "we have diminished our soil, fisheries, fossil fuels and we have changed the climate. We caused the extinction of countless species by half." Over consumption has reached a point of harming Americans health and the overall environment. According to John De Graaf, David Wann and Thomas H. Naylor "sixty–nine acres of prime American farmland are lost to development." Once you cut down and pave over farms the land is gone forever. The very thing that humanity relies on is being taken for granted. Americas increase in consumption does have benefits but the negative effects on the environment, American health and family outweigh the positive. What once was an abundance of natural resources is now becoming hard to find. The magnitude that this type of industrial development has on the environment is irreversible. The characters of Willy and his two sons, Happy and Biff, prove this. At the end of the play, Willy kills himself in a car crash in order to get insurance money for his family, hoping that Happy and Biff will use that money to start their own business. This shows that instead of continuing to work and make money, he kills himself to get some "easy money" for his family. Also, Happy and Biff plan on becoming successful businessmen, despite failing school. Biff dropped out of high school after failing math, and Happy works as an assistant to an assistant in a department store, where he makes very little money. He seems to be blissfully unaware of the world around him, and seems to only be interested in girls than actually trying to improve his position. Both Happy and Biff seem to expect success to come to them, hoping to make "easy money". Not only was it uncommon for people of Twain's era to write in vernacular, it was new–fangled for him to write about the subject of vernacular itself. It is a difficult task to write about, much less in, a dialect to which one is foreign without appearing foolish. Twain's ability to both with ease marked him as an authority on the subject. Thus, Twain's early experiences in life helped him to flesh out a well–rounded vocabulary and sparked his interests in adventure and traveling. Twain spent his boyhood in the riverside town of Hannibal, Missouri where he, "experienced the excitement of the colorful steamboats that docked at the town wharf, bringing comedians, singers, gamblers, swindlers, slave dealers, and assorted other river travelers" (Gribben). His exposure to much of the world at a young age opened his eyes to people groups, travel, and differences in dialect that would all become subject matter of his later writing. Twain wrote in Life on the Mississippi that he became acquainted with all the "different types of human nature that are to be found in fiction, biography, or history" while he worked as a steamboat apprentice (128). The diverse people and places he met during his time on the river all became awe–inspiring to him and served as the foundation for his works to come. Countless ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Essay on The Malignant American in Surfacing The Malignant American in Surfacing Before traveling through Europe last summer, friends advised me to avoid being identified as an American. Throughout Europe, the term American connotes arrogance and insensitivity to local culture. In line with the foregoing stereotype, the unnamed narrator's use of the term American in Margaret Atwood's Surfacing is used to describe individuals of any nationality who are unempathetic and thus destructive. The narrator, however, uses the word in the context of her guilt over her abortion and consequent emotional numbness. The narrator's vituperative definition of American as an individual who is unempathetic and destructive is largely attributable to the narrator's projection of her own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emotional numbness is the logical cause for such behaviour, as a lack of empathy enables an individual to act heedless of negative consequences to others. The narrator's scathing treatment of Americans during the foregoing encounter is representative of the treatment she affords them throughout Surfacing. Americans are variously described as "tapeworms" (129), "loon killers" (121), analogues to Hitler (129) and attackers (183). Although the narrator frequently applies the label American to people who she thinks are citizens of the United States (US), she ultimately divorces the term from nationality. When the narrator discovers that two men who wantonly killed a heron are Canadian, she states, "It doesn't matter what country they're from, my head said, they're still Americans" (129). In the narrator's mind, American is a term describing those who are emotionally numb and are capable of inflicting pain on others. Given the intensity of the narrator's feelings about the term American, it clearly has special significance in her mind. This significance stems from an abortion she underwent as a result of a relationship with a married man. The effect of the abortion is alluded to when Anna is reading the narrator's palm: "'You had a good childhood but then there's this funny break'" (8). The abortion traumatised the narrator, leaving her with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Mark Twain- American Author Some of the most riveting books in not just American literature but in all of history, was written by this famous author. Twain, an American writer, is one of the major authors of American fiction. Also, he is considered the greatest humorist in American literature (Alan Gribben, np). Mark Twain was influenced by the society's conditions he lived in, hence the incorporation of much of it in his writing. Growing up in the 1870s, Twain's society was much different than growing up now. He grew up during the outbreak of the civil war and he lived during the time of major cynical political corruption that began in the late 1860s all the way to 1900. He was also raised during a time where slave–holding was acceptable, and encouraged. Under his father's influence, he was told that slavery was justified through biblical principles. The majority of people in Hannibal, where Twain grew up, thought this and was the reason why everyone was proslavery. "The local pulpit taught us that God approved it, that it was a holy thing and that the doubter need only look in the Bible if he wished to settle his mind and then the texts were read aloud to us to make the matter sure; if the slaves themselves had an aversion to slavery, they were wise and said nothing..." (Twain 212 ) This quote portrayed how the people Twain grew up with encouraged slavery because it was accepted by God. However, even though Twain grew up in this condition he was never a supporter of slavery or racism. This point ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Huckleberry Finn Literary Techniques In the year 1884, American author and humorist Mark Twain published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the sequel to his most famous piece, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. This sequel was very successful. Its success can be attributed to Mark Twain's appealing writing style and tasteful use of literary techniques. The most prominent techniques used in this classic novel include diction, language, irony, imagery, as well as tone. In the novel, Mark Twain uses diction and language to achieve more authentic characters. The dialogue and narration from the main protagonist, Huckleberry Finn, is simple and very informal. It makes it clear that he is a young, uneducated, "backwoods South–Western" boy living in the 1830s. If Huck were to be grammatically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
