Introduction To Memory
How Does Memory work
Memory is the process of maintaining information over time.”
(Matlin, 2005)
“Memory is the means by which we draw on our past experiences
in order to use this information in the present’ (Sternberg, 1999).
Memory is involved in processing vast amounts of information.
This information takes many different forms, e.g. images, sounds
or meaning.
What is memory??
Introduction to Memory..
• Learning and memory are not a single process but are a constellation
of distinct processes, each with its own rules (Milner et al. 1998). The
acquisition of a skill constitutes learning, while the ability to retain
that knowledge defines memory. Many different factors affect the
ability to learn, to consolidate that learning into memory, and to allow
the memory to be retrieved.
• Memory process involves three domains: encoding, storage, and
retrieval.
• Encoding – processing incoming information so it can be entered
into memory.
• Storage – maintaining information in memory for a period of
time.
• Retrieval – accessing or recalling stored information from memory
so it can be used.
Process of Memory
• Memory and learning are closely linked concepts.
• Our ability to learn, and repeatedly apply that learning to practice,
depends on our capacity to process, store and retrieve information
from our memory.
• One effective way to do this is by facilitating the formation of deep,
long-term memories in our learners as part of the education we
provide. This will better enable our learners to correctly implement
new knowledge and skills into their practice into the future
