1.What is CPD?
 Professional development is learning to earn or maintain
professional competence such as academic degrees to formal
coursework, conferences and informal learning opportunities
situated in practice. It has been described as intensive and
collaborative, ideally incorporating an evaluative stage.
 There are a variety of approaches to professional development,
including consultation, coaching, communities of practice,
lesson study, mentoring, reflective supervision and technical
assistance.

 CPD helps teachers to keep their knowledge and skills up
to date .
 It helps them build self confidence and equips them to cope
with positive change.
 It is also benificial for teachers progression and
advancement. Therefore,CPD may lead teachers to get
higher salaries.

3- CPD benefits:
1.MOOCs:
a.Definition:
 A massive open online course (MOOC )is an online course aimed at
unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to
traditional course materials such as filmed lectures, readings,
and problem sets, many MOOCs provide interactive user forums to
support community interactions among students, professors,
and teaching assistants (TAs).
 MOOCs are a recent and widely researched development in distance
education which were first introduced in 2008 and emerged as a
popular mode of learning in 2012.
https://en.wikipedia.org
 Learning happens in a more informal setting, at a place of your
convenience and often around your own schedule.
 You don’t need a degree to follow the course, only the willingness
to learn (at high speed).
 You add to your own personal learning environment and/or
network by participating in a MOOC.
 You will improve your lifelong learning skills, for participating
in a MOOC forces you to think about your own learning and
knowledge acquisition.
 You’ll learn anytime, anywhere and in your own pace.
 Most of MOOCs are free except paying for accomplishment
certificates.

2.Online conferences:
1- Definitions:
 Web conferencing may be used as an umbrella term for various
types of online collaborative services including web seminars.
 The term "webinar" is a compound noun of web and seminar,
meaning a presentation, lecture, or workshop that is transmitted
over the web.
The term "webcast" derives from its original similarity to a radio
or television broadcast. Early usage referred purely to transmission
and consumption of streaming audio and video via the World Wide
Web. Over time, webcast software vendors have added many of the
same functional capabilities found in webinar software.
https://en.wikipedia.org
2-Advantages
I’m not saying an online conference is absolutely better than a
normal, face to face conference ,but it is different, and has lots of
advantages:
Cheaper - because there is no travel, and no accommodation is
required.
-You can access it at any time you want, from anywhere with an
Internet connection.
-High level of participation typically, more people will actively
participate in an online conference than in a face to face
conference..
- Permanent record of proceedings.

 Online CPD is good but attending face to face events is so
useful to teachers.
 Online CPD is cheaper,flexible.
 MOOCs are very practical for teachers who work for long
periods and have no time to participate in traditional events.
 Free webinars offer an opportunity to upgrade teachers
skills, especially those who live far from big cities and
therefore contributes in a sort of equality between certain rural
and urban areas.
