Motivation:
Coal is the prime feed for approximately unlimited industrial and thermal power sector worldwide. With
the advent of import to India and the reducing qualities of coal from current mining areas, it has become
difficult to obtain the correct qualities of coal to meet the specifications for boilers designed in the years
gone by. This leads to reduced efficiency and increased emissions norms.
This course seeks to outline the issues now being faced by coal-fired boiler users and to present an
outline of the coal qualities now available on the market with comments on how best to use them.
Objectives:
The purpose of this workshop is to outline the principles of combustion and to present coal qualities and
performance for users of coal in a range of boiler sizes, this to ensure improved efficiencies and
reducing harmful emission from thermal power plants.
Coal the most significant source of energy:
Approximately 23% of primary energy needs are met by coal and 39% of electricity is generated from coal.
About 70% of world steel production depends on coal feedstock. Coal is the world's most abundant and widely
distributed fossil fuel source.
The International Energy Agency expects a 43% increase in its use from 2000 to 2020.
Burning coal produces about 12 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide each year which is released to atmosphere,
About 70% of this being from power generation.
Other estimates put carbon dioxide emissions from power generation at one third of the world total of over 28
billion tonnes of CO2 emissions.
A continuosly developing range of technology solutions which improve the efficiency and environmental impact
assessment of using coal as an energy source.

• How can we reach the objectives?
– Unit‐level bench marking
– Component‐level bench marking
is defined as the probability of performing a successful repair action within a given time. In other words,
maintainability measures the ease and speed with which a system can be restored to operational status after a failure occurs.
factor of a process plant is the amount of time that it is able to produce electricity over a certain period, divided by
the amount of the time in the period. Occasions where only partial capacity is available may or may not be deducted.
(1) The duration or probability of failure-free performance under stated conditions. (2) The probability that an item
can perform its intended function for a specified interval under stated conditions.
• To simply find ways that either outage frequency, outage duration, or both, can be reduced and kept at a level consistent with
minimum generation costs and load management objectives.

Reducing MRO Costs & Improving ROA
At MARCEP INC., Dr. Banerjee says that his organization’s clients are looking to predicting and preventing failures as the key
to reducing their maintenance, repair and operation (MRO) costs, and to increasing their return on assets (ROA).
“It’s not just the equipment cost and number of machines, but the financial impact of failure on production,” Dr. Banerjee says.
“That’s why improving your maintenance practices deserves so much attention.”
A trend toward outsourcing maintenance and adopting asset management applications is helping operators make the
improvements that Dr. Banerjee says are crucial to keeping plants up and running, and keeping costs down.
“It has helped our customers identify critical issues and bad actors, optimize maintenance, prioritize turnarounds and
shutdowns, and increase mean time between repairs.
“As our customers gain knowledge and baseline metrics, we see a slow migration to condition and performance monitoring,
for even higher degrees of maintenance accuracy,” says Dr. Banerjee.
