Andrew Middleton, Sheffield Hallam University
Media-Enhanced Learning SIG
University of Huddersfield, 6th September 2013
Aim
Write a book together in 1 hour
by generating 100 ideas for
Smart Device Learning
What is Smart Device Learning?
Formal or informal learning enabled by
the student or staff use of smart
technologies, usually their own, including
smart phones and tablets.
Smart Device Learning exploits the
apps, media, connectivity, storage and
pervasive nature of the technology.
Characteristics of Smart Device Learning
• Personal and User-centred – managed according to the
preferences of the user(s) and producers (not institutional)
• Social and connected – ideas, questions and knowledge
shared
• Media – social and digital media (e.g.
audio, video, PDFs, web, etc.)
• Access - people, content, knowledge
• Flexible (time) – synchronous or 'just-in-time', any time
• Device neutral – across devices (mobile/fixed)
• Authentic and ubiquitous – location neutral
• Disruptive and Changing - personal innovation

How
Everybody here will come up with 3+ ideas
• Activity 1 – what we know about already
• Activity 2 - a creativity exercise
• Activity 3 – take another look
• Activity 4 – feedback, listen and construct)
• Use the supplied form
• Write clearly please!
• (Refine and sign off by email later)
Activity 1 – just 3 minutes
• Work alone
• Use the form to describe something you or
a colleague is already doing or an idea
that has already started to form for you.
• Each person needs to produce at least 1
idea each in this activity
• More ideas are better
• Come up with wacky but descriptive Titles
• Don't worry about spelling, etc! Just get
the ideas down on the form
Activity 1b – 5 minutes each
• Cryptically, start to tell the person next to
you about 1 or more of your ideas
• Listen and try to guess the idea before it
is all explained
• Make a note of what you thought they
were going to say
• Develop this as a new, separate idea
together
