Ancillary task- web pop ups
History of the internet 
The internet which used to be known as ‘Arpanet’ was brought online by 
1969 under a contact led by the renamed advanced research project 
agency (ARPA) which initially connected four main university's online. In a 
months time after this the list had expanded and a lot of university's were 
connected online. 
Who was first to use the internet?- the first person to use the internet 
was Charley Kline at UCLA sent the first packets Arpa net. He attempted 
to connect to Stanford research institute on October 29th 1969. 
When the internet first became existent the internet was used as a 
communication network even if major sights were down. 
The early internet was used by scientists, engineers, Liberians and 
computer experts. 
Email was adapted for ARPANET by Ray Tomlinson of BBN by 1972.
History of the web 
Tim Berners- Lee a British scientist at CERN invented the world 
wide web in 1989. 
The first website that was launched on the web was dedicated to 
the web itself. The website discussed how to use the web, how to 
access other peoples documents and how to set up your own 
server. 
On the 6th of August 1991the world wide web went live to the 
world. 
The original web 1.0 of 1989 was just a massive collection of 
electronic brochures where as the web 2.0 formed in 2004 was 
more than this it had evolved into an interactive software. A few 
examples of web 2.0 are: 
Online banking, online radio, spread sheeting, digital photo 
processing and free web based emails.
History of online shopping 
Online shopping began when the web was open to commercial 
use in 1991. In 1994 other advances took place for example 
online banking. The year 1994 was also the launch of ‘Yahoo’ 
this changed the direction of the internet completely. 
Pay pal came into existence in 1998 and in 1998 was also 
when Google entered the internet. The internet is growing 
everyday and therefore online shopping is which means that 
today you can buy anything via the internet.
Web pop ups 
What is a web pop up? 
A web pop up is a form of advertising online and will 
appear without you clicking or choosing to see it. 
Ethan Zuckerman invented the web pop ups and this 
was invented in the late 1990’s. The first web pop up 
launched was on the website tripod.com
Ancillary task- Program sponsorship
History of sponsorship 
What is a sponsorship? 
A sponsorship comes on before or after a 
program or comes on straight as the program 
comes to a break. It is finical support from a 
sponsor. 
The very first program sponsorship to be aired 
was in America and its was during a baseball 
game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the 
Brooklyn Dodgers. The length of the sponsorship 
was 10 seconds and the overall payment for this 
sponsorship was $140.
