book in which he examines an in depth analysis of globalization in today's world. It is called the

This era witnessed individuals/small groups going global irrespective of the color or race. As a result
of this, the size further shrunk from small to tiny and almost flattened the world.
The second chapter of the book is about the 10 "Flatteners" i.e. the 10 forces, events or trends that
triggered this change.
Flattener #1– 11/9/89 or The collapse of the Berlin Wall: Mr. Friedman argues that the fall of the
Berlin Wall was really the decline of communism and in turn the rise of capitalism. With the advent
of the Windows powered computers, people from different parts of the world could connect with
each other which made it possible to see the world as a "single flat plate."
Flatter #2: 98/9/95 Netscape: Friedman believes that this was the essence of people to people
connectivity and hence a huge flattener. He says that Netscape going public played a key role in
commercializing internet and making it accessible to everyone across the globe.
The other flatteners mentioned are Work flow software, Uploading, Outsourcing, Offshoring,
Supply–chaining, Insourcing, Informing and Steroids. He illustrates these concepts with examples
and provides a strong explanation to support his argument. In my opinion, his discussion of the
UPS, or in his words "the guys in funny brown shorts", is very strong.

The book I have chosen to read was "The earth is flat", by Thomas Friedman. This book began with
Mr. Freiedman coming to the realization that the world is flat, meaning that technology has provided
a level playing field across the world. He came to have this understanding while on a trip to India.
While there he realized that intellectual property and investments could be delivered straight to his
doorstep in America. Freidman also introduced the concept of globalization in chapter 1. This was
broken up into globalization 1.0 which lasted until around the 1800s and shrank the earth from large

He argues that America has always led the world with its innovation in these fields and with the loss
of so many trained individuals America would take a back seat to the rest of the world. He blames
this on what he refers to as Americas "dirty little secrets". Secret one was blames the generation that
was motivated by scientific advancements like landing on the moon, now going into retirement. The
second dirty little secret was the ambition gap. This is the fact that Americans often look down on
low prestige jobs like call center operator, while people from other countries look highly upon these

The World is Flat
Author Thomas L. Friedman analyses the technological advances that are creating a level economic
playing field with previously disadvantaged countries rising in knowledge and wealth rivaling that
of the United States and other world powers in the world. Telephone and computer technology,
previously a stronghold only of developed countries, is now easily accessible and has been accessed
and mastered by countries such as China and India, making these nations competitive. Friedman
perceives the flattening effect as so insightful as to be compared in scope to the Industrial
Revolution.
Thomas Friedman mentions that world is growing flatter. When he says that world is flat, he means
that world is becoming more economically fair and levelling opportunities and wealth among all the
nations. With easy access to information and availability of opportunities irrespective of one's

Introduction: Good afternoon class. My name is Shiquez Underwood. My major is Marketing. I am
a twenty–year–old junior and I am from Macon Georgia.
Attention Getter: Imagine this. Last week, I was delivering pizzas for my job Papa John's, getting
ready to go on another deliver. I get in my car, ride half of a mile down the street and realize my tire
is flat; so I pull over at the store and immediately see a screw in my tire. While Im trying to change
my tire, I realize my spare tire does not fit and now I am stuck. What would you all do?
Relevancy Statement: An unexpected flat tire could happen to anyone in this room, if not you, your
parents, friends, or someone you may not know that you can help.
Credibility Statement: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
"in 2003, about 414 people died in accidents caused by flat tires or blowouts. Moreover, there were
10,275 injuries and 78,392 crashes associated with these tire related accidents".
