However, the 1973–4 oil crisis put a brake on the fast pace of steel production growth and further led the global steel industry into a transformation era
lasting two decades. The period 1975–2000 was characterized by production stagnation, in terms of scale, and structural transformation driven by
widespread technological innovation which created 75% of the categories of steel products used today. Current Global Scenario In the year 2000, the
World Crude Steel production was 848 million tonnes, showing an impressive growth of 7.6% over the previous year. The world steel consumption
also rose by almost 8%. The international steel trade constituted around 303 million tons or 40.5% of the production. In 2001 and 2002, world crude
steel production was 833.70 million tonnes and 886.70 million tonnes, respectively. The following significant developments have been witnessed

Basics Of Steel Making : Oxygen Steelmaking And Electric...
As mentioned in the introductory part, there are two basics of steel making: oxygen steelmaking and electric arc furnace. Steel manufacturing sites,
sometimes–called integrated sites, use blast furnace to refine iron ore into steel. The most basic process applied by most steel manufacturing
companies if the Basic Oxygen Furnace to change iron into steel. At the site of production, liquid iron flows into the BOF section where pure oxygen
is blown into the iron at very high speed. The oxygen comes in through a lance put at the entrance of the BOF. This oxygen serves to eliminate carbon

The second basic in steel making is electric steelmaking. In this process, there is the employment of electric arc furnaces. The type of furnace takes
steel scrap, DRI, HBI, or pig iron as mentioned in the introduction. These forms of iron are solid; therefore, an electric arc furnace melts them to
produce steel. In the EAF, electricity is the main source of energy used to melt steel scrap (Engineer 's Handbook, 2004). Some furnaces may use
oxygen, carbon and hydrocarbon fuels to speed up the process. In this process, there is no need to remove much carbon, as is the case in the BOF
process. However, some impurities should be removed to increase the purity of the final steel produced. Regardless of the process used in steel making:
integrated sites or EAF, the most important thing is the economics, location or history. Available literature shows that at the beginning of steelmaking,
there was evidently little scrap traces. However, in today's production, it is hard to meet the demands for steel. The implication is that depletion is
taking effect in steelmaking processes.
Secondary Steelmaking Process Essentially, steel produced using the two processes discussed initially is the same except for minimal differences
that are crucial only in special grades. These procedures of steelmaking are a bit different at the secondary stages of steelmaking. Secondary stages are

Stainless steels can be divided into five categories:
1.Martensitic Stainless Steels:
These alloys have a chromium content that ranges from 11.50 to 18.00%. They have relatively high carbon content from 0.15 to 1.20% compared to
other stainless steels and molybdenum can also be used. These grades can be hardened through heat treatment to offer strength and hardness. They are
magnetic. The common uses are knife blades, surgical instruments, shafts.
2.Ferritic Stainless Steel:
Alloys In ferritic grades, carbon is kept to low levels (C<0.08%) and the chromium content can range from10.50 to 30.00%. only chromium is present as
the main metallic alloying element. Common uses are automotive exhaust systems (11.00%Cr), automotive trim (17.00%Cr–1.50%Mo), hot water
tanks (18.00%Cr–2.00%Mo–Ti).
3.Austenitic Stainless Steels:
Alloys In austenitic grades, carbon is usually kept to low levels (C < 0.08%). Chromium content ranges from 16.00 to 28.00% and nickel content ranges
from 3.50 to 32.00%. This chemical composition allows them to maintain an austenitic structure from cryogenic temperatures up to the melting point of

These strategies have been very effective in terms of expanding its resources as well as conceptualization of new technology (using electric arc furnace
as alternative to conventional furnace) and improvement of plant efficiency thru equipment upgrades. The usage of the technology has allowed low
investment cost for facilities and equipment that eliminated expensive steps in steel making. Also the use of scrap materials has lessened the
purchase of ore for steel making. Furthermore, joint ventures have given them option to join global market of steel producers. However, Nucor
should be also wary on possible entrants that could offer low cost steel which might be a reason for a loss of customers which in–turn loose potential
income and worst cut jobs.
Steel, being a commodity that is dictated by market demand, has been changing continually. But being a low cost provider, it has resulted to numerous
customers entering into non–cancellable contracts.

The use of secondary steelmaking techniques has made a major input to the optimisation of inclusion population for the control of modern steel
properties. The development of new secondary steelmaking techniques was due to an increasing demand for improved and consistent qualities of high
grade steels for chemical, petroleum, aerospace, and nuclear industries (Kiessling, 1989).( pg45). Secondary steelmaking includes provision for
temperature control, bath agitation, efficient slag–metal interaction and precise addition of alloying elements and reactants. With those technologies of
secondary steelmaking process the number, size, morphology, and composition of inclusions can be controlled (Kiessling, 1989). (pg45).
The global demand for clean steel has increased in the last years due to the demand for better performance. There is need to develop steel with fewer
inclusions to improve performance. Steel inclusions impede performance as they may act as sources of crack growth and propagation. Some inclusions
affect steel properties such as fatigue, ductility and weldability. According to Riyahimalayeri et al. oxide inclusions reduce the rolling contact fatigue
life of steel products even when the total oxygen content is below the 10 ppm (Riyahimalayeri, et al., 2013). Inclusions like sulphur reduce steel
toughness which hinders performance. It is imperative to develop methods that are aimed at reducing steel inclusions for better performance. Improved

Unable to get favorable prices from American steel manufacturers, and unhappy with the imported steel available at the time, Iverson (a metallurgist by
training) decided to integrate Nuclear backwards into steel making by building its first steel bar mill in Darlington, South Carolina in 1968. The

Recommendation 1: To expand more internationally by building plants in lower property taxed areas with low tariffs to ship products out.
Recommendation 2: To put in place job descriptions for employees. By doing this it will save Nucor litigation fees and troubles if something arises in
the workplace between the employee and Nucor about job duties, injuries, etc.
Recommendation 3: Other than expanding internationally, Nucor should make joint ventures with suppliers to keep the cost down of the product. A
lot of scrap that is used is imported so it would be a good idea for Nucor to utilize that to reduce costs of making their products.

Another recommendation that I have for Nucor is instead of buying existing plant capacity, make new plants elsewhere or form a joint venture
with a supplier to help save money. (Exhibit 3) This would decrease cost of supplies so they would have the extra money to build elsewhere or
build a ne plant. By using the SWOT analysis (Exhibit 1) it let me break up Nucor into different parts to see what their strengths and weaknesses
are. Nucor is solid with technology and treating the employees correct but the weaknesses that affect Nucor are more market based with some
internal problems. Nucor has products for many different industries including automotive and housing. This can cause issues for Nucor if those
industries take a fall, which they have over the last 5 years. It's a good idea to be in these industries but Nucor has to realize what can happen to
sales and revenues when one or both of those industries take a fall. Nucor has been expanding more in the United States, recently just building a plant
in Louisiana (Exhibit 5). This plant will be a 750 million dollar purchase and will be a mill for pig iron. Nucor is expanding all over the United States

build up of customized products. Industry profitability fluctuated widely ranging from –16.7% to 5.0%.

Customers were classified into 33 market segments ranging from original equipment manufacturers to forge shops, distributors to metal workers.
Lehigh had 7 product lines – Alloy, Bearing, Conversion, Corrosion, Die Steel, High Speed and High Temp– of which three – Alloy, Die Steel and
High Speed comprised 70% of sales.
Die steel was steel strengthened for use in machine dies and molds.
High speed products served endurance applications, such as mental cutting and punching, and were narrower in focus.
Alloys were used in aerospace frames, landing gears, missile cases and fasteners.
Lehigh also carried niche products lines – Bearing, Corrosion and High temp – whose volume fluctuated with market conditions.
