The Lieutenant's first action following the death is to, "Lead his men into the village of Than Khe.
They burned everything. They shot chickens and dogs, they trashed the village well, they called in
artillery and watched the wreckage" (11). This first leadership move marks the change in Jimmy
Cross' character. Before the death of Lavender, Cross would not have ordered such a blunt and

In Tim O'Brien's narrative, The Things They Carried, characters are shown going through
excruciatingly difficult war struggles. There are many intriguing themes that O'Brien is sharing in
the text, but the most striking is the differences between the way each person handles war. People in
the story cope by imagining things for motivation and pleasure. Imagination can help soldiers, but
also does not help in war when the coping distracts one from important situations. The most
common coping mechanism in the war stories has to do with women because they were used as
security blankets during war. Soldiers use women, imagined and real, to offer an escape from war,
but due to their inability to understand the war, the women cannot help them cope.
Imagining women does not help soldiers cope in war when reality is propped up next to it. In the
short story, "The Things They Carried", Lieutenant Jimmy Cross loved a girl named Martha so
much that she took away his focus on the war. Tim O'Brien sets the scene by stating, "First
Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha...They were not love letters, but
Lieutenant Cross was hoping" (O'Brien 1). Cross carried letters from Martha with him to help him
escape from the war. The author purposefully uses the word "hope" to portray to the reader that
Martha did not love him, and that he knew that was true. The word brings lots of context to the

This cause the men to get a lot less time to relax, taking 8 or more hour guard shifts. The redundant,
mundane task of manning the TCPs would make the soldiers restless, tired and complacent; an
extremely dangerous combination when in a combat zone. The TCPs would cause a lot of problems
throughout the entire deployment. The first catastrophe to hit Bravo Company, and 1st platoon in
particular, was the deaths of SSG Nelson and SGT Casica from 3rd SQD. They were both shot point
blank while trying to talk to a familiar civilian that they had spoken to previously while manning a
TCP. This was the start of the downward spiral that 1st platoon went through during the deployment.
Continuing after this incident, the company was still spread very thin, having too many tasks and not
enough people. Having to go out on a 20–hour mission and then have to go back out right after you
get to the FOB hoping for a bit of relaxing time was a serious moral killer. This didn't not help the
fact that 1st platoon already had been taking out bottled anger and remorse for their lost comrades
out on insurgent and civilian alike. To them they were all the enemy. The next big blow the 1st

Which should make the audience realize that although we did not know much about Ted Lavender

The things they carried are a story written by Tim O'Brien about a group of US solders that are
fighting in the Vietnam War. This story centers on First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross his band of
brothers. In this story we follow Lt Cross through the jungles, in the caves, and across the rice
patties of Vietnam. We get the rare opportunity of looking into what a man thinks and does when he
is stranded thousands of miles from his home, family, and friends. The name of this story suggests
what it is about; the things they carried. It talks about the their experience in Vietnam and what they
carried physically and mentally. From the beginning of this book, Lt. Cross goes into great detail of
what supplies they have to carry with them and everything that has to do with these supplies. Cross
describes to us what, how heavy, and what any item that he or his brethren may be carrying at any
point in time. Cross goes into detail about these items in a very standard and almost rehearsed way
at the beginning of the book and towards the end he stops talking about their weight. The way he
talks about the weights in the beginning act almost in a way that comforts him. It's as if he doesn't
think about what is actually going around him and instead that a claymore weighs 3.5 pounds that
what is going on around him isn't happening. He is affixed onto these items to avoid dealing with

each day during the war, as long as Dobbins can carry his pack and survive, at the end of the day he

Life can come to a stop sometimes when a person is weighed down by burdens. For some people it
may be too difficult to live in the present while constantly thinking about the past and because of
this are unable to move on. These can be burdens that they have been carrying for a long time or
even recently. In the short story, "The Things They Carried,"Tim O'Brien uses symbolism,
ambiguity, and a non–linear narrative structure to illustrate emotional burdens. The concept of
symbolism is used by O'Brien to portray the different emotional burdens the soldiers are feeling.
These symbols are mainly items that the characters carry with them while performing their tasks.
One symbol that really stood out is the character Henry Dobbins and the personal item he carried.
O'Brien states, "Henry Dobbins carried his girlfriend's pantyhose wrapped around his neck as a
comforter" (349). The intimates are referred to as a "comforter" which can be interpreted to mean
that the article of clothing is providing warmth to Dobbins. I imagine him wearing the piece like a
scarf to protect him from the war. He's reminded of his old life with his girlfriend before being
drafted for the war. Dobbins is having a sense of longing, and because of this feeling he is going to
be occupied, mentally, about this emotion and it will distract him from his duties. Another symbol

The book Black Hearts is written by Jim Frederick and tells the story of all the controversial
accounts one infantry unit ran into while on deployment in Baghdad, Iraq. The book is a
documentation, captured accounts and events written down to tell the crazy story these soldiers went
through. The specific unit Frederick writes about and what Black Hearts is about is 2nd brigade of
the 101st airborne infantry division. "Black Hearts" was the unofficial insignia of 2nd brigade.

This unit was practicing improper procedures for their soldiers were drinking, doing drugs, and
visiting local brothels. From a tactical stand point the 48th infantry was no better in this aspect
either. The patrols they conducted were inadequate and performed far from often. The area supposed
to be under their control became dangerous because the insurgents moving in the area were virtually
unchallenged. This was no feat for the 101st and 1st platoon because the 101st is a tactically sound
unit that could establish control and a presence in the area but for soldiers that had to do so upon
arrival when it was supposed to be maintained is not necessarily a good thing. The company
commander of bravo, Cpt. Goodwin decided the best way to take back control of their area of
operations is to have a three station cycle for his company. Each platoon would have a twenty–one

task was to patrol the city as per guidance from higher. The least liked job was manning the TCP's.

Having served in various leadership positions throughout a ten year military career, I can point to

The Other Wes Moore Analysis
Impacts On A Life "If [others] expect us to graduate, we will graduate. If they expect us to get a job,
we will get a job. If they expect us us to go to jail, then that's where we will end up too" (Moore
127). In Wes Moore's book The Other Wes Moore expectations from our role models impact
everything including our jobs. Two kids named Wes moore, similar in age grow up just blocks from
each other, with difficult childhoods including run ins with the police and hanging with their crew.
One becomes a Rhodes scholar, decorated veteran and business leader, and the other ends up a
convicted murderer serving a life sentence in prison. Their stories could have been switched with so
many similarities in their life but the slight differences changing their paths. Similarities and
differences pertaining to role models and jobs of both Moores were described in The Other Wes
Moore. Both the author Wes and the "other" Wes have role models in their life that affect their
