Ted Talk Biography
Ted Talks and The Four Principles of Sustainability
GEOG 130–004
Patrick Naughton
Professor Gibbons
Bridgewater State University
Introduction
There are 5 Ted Talks being examined here today, all of which address sustainability in some form
or another. The first speaker we cover is Sylvia Earle, an oceanic researcher with a Ted Talk about
the importance of our oceans followed by a short summary of discussion by William Kamkwamba, a
Malawian inventor who defied all odds. Thirdly, we will take a look at the Ted Talk held by Penguin
expert, Dylan deNapoli and her experiences with penguin rescues. Next we will examine Leyla
Acaroglu's Ted Talk about environmental folklore and finally, Satish Kumar, an Indian activist who

many new experiences. They met an American while walking along the Khyber Pass in Pakistan
who had offered a ride, which they respectfully declined, only to end up at his front door in
Philadelphia years later for a talk of good times. They also met with Bertrand Russell, the

Happy Feet And Kung Fu Panda
Different from the outside, but same in the inside
Happy Feet and Kung Fu Panda are two good movies that have different themes. The two movies
have different plots at first glance, but later on show resemblances when analyzed more closely. The
two protagonist in Happy Feet (Mumble) and Kung Fu Panda (Po) both start off unfitting and
strange, later on being rejected by their peers and community. They want to become accepted by
others, but struggle to redeem themselves. Happy Feet and Kung Fu Panda are different, because
one is about a penguin that can 't sing and the other is about a Panda that wants to learn Kung Fu
and is unfit, but both show many similarities.
In the beginning of Happy Feet, Mumble was in an egg and wasn't going to ... Show more content

They are made fun of and make everyone uncomfortable. They're dads have different points of view
about them and already could see their futures.
Then in Happy Feet, Mumble grew older and the penguins don't hang out with him, because of his
weird tap dancing. He's trying to fit in and make friends, so he goes to a party. Mumble then ruins
the celebration with his awful singing, and leaves the group. Mumble was too different and
disapproved by the other penguins, because of his strange tap dancing and unable to sing. Mumble is
then casted away from the penguin community. His Father approves and think it's the best decision.
He then leaves on a floating iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. On Kung Fu Panda, Po was thought to be
accidently chosen of being the Dragon Warrior. His idols were his new peers, but they were
displeased with the decision. His Master and his peers disapprove him and think he unqualified of
being the Dragon Warrior, especially for being obese and think he got in by accident, and refuse to
acknowledge him. He is being made fun of, for being fat and clumsy. His Master and his peers try to
remove Po. Po's dad says Kung Fu isn't for everyone and told him to work back with him, in the
noodle shop. Mumble and Po start out by being rejected for being different from the others and are
being disregarded. They're peers are trying to remove them

Why Do Penguins Suffer From Climate Change
Introduction
Penguins Are Suffering from Climate Change. Most people in the world can see, agree, and
understand that we have global warming and climate change issues that affect both plant and animal
around the world. We just need to come together on what needs to be done about global warming
and climate change and get it done to save ourselves, animals and the environment that depend on us
to do something. The biggest problems have been trying to get an agreement on what needs to be
done. A lot of people feel it's not their problem, important enough or its nothing we can do about it
now. In the meantime, there are animals, including penguins, plants and other animals dying out
while we are trying to figure it out. For a lot of people the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Certain penguins even have rouges of orange and yellow marking on the necks such as that of the
emperor and king penguin. On the Fiordand, Royal, Snares and Rockhopper penguins it appearances
to be an intense yellow bushy eyebrows that adorn their heads. Surprisingly, some even have a racon
type mask that appears to be a light–yellow mask covering their face and yellow eyes. The National
Geographic stated "Emperors are the largest of all penguins an average bird stands some 45 inches
tall. These flightless animals live on the Antarctic ice and in the frigid surrounding waters."
However, the Little Blue Penguin sometimes known as Fairy Penguin and Little Penguins are the
smallest penguin species in the world! They grow to about 13 inches in height, 17 inches in length,
and on average weighs only about 3.3 pounds! While normally only diving up to 2 meters and for 21
seconds, they can dive as deep as 20 meters, staying beneath water for only about 60 seconds! They
make their home and breeds along the coast of New Zealand, the Chatham Islands, and southern
Australia", based on information from The Sea thos

March Of Penguins
In March of the Penguins, the author explains in a subjective point of view that it's not the fault of
another animal for needing to feed by eating the penguins. For the Penguins, they survive many
harsh winters and attacks from animals such as the Sea Lion, because of this show of strength in one
of the world's harshest of environments, the Author admires these Penguins and how they live. Ways
they show their loyalty to their home and ways they survive this hellish place are simple, yet
extremely hazardous tasks. To get back to their mating area, the first group of penguins, the males,
must travel an extremely long distance to make it back to their home and meet up with the female
penguins that have been waiting for a very long time. Though the females are starving, they
continue on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the nighttime storms, they huddle closely together to keep warm and switch from inside to
outside so each penguin gets to feel warmth that is at the center. After all of these storms, the
females are on the return from the water. Some eggs may have been lost in the storm so the mothers
of those chicks will not have a child to feed. For those who have survived, their child is awaiting
food from the mother. After feeding the child, they pass it back to the mother as the father is in need
of food. Before departing, the Father and Child sing to each other to remember who is who after the
father returns from feeding. As time passes, these chicks slowly grow older and get much larger,
eventually losing their baby feathers. During most of their growing up stage, they are left alone as
they are old enough to look out for themselves and that of their fellow penguins. After they are old
enough, they walk out to the waters edge that is now much closer as it is now summer time again.
They jump in and resume the process that has been repeated throughout the generations and will
soon make the march

Summary: Our Iceberg Is Melting by John Kotter
Summary: Our Iceberg is Melting
Foreword by Spenser Johnson: One the surface, the story of this book appears to be a fable that is
relatively easy to grasp, but it does subtly impart an invaluable lesson on change. The book covers
John Kotter's Eight Steps to bring about successful organizational change and can be equally useful
for a high–school student as it is for a CEO of a multi–national organization.
Welcome Note by John Kotter: People do not often understand the need for change. Businesses,
school systemsand even nations do not know understand what to do, how to make it happen and
how to make it stick. This book shows the traps in which people often fall while facing the challenge
of change – using a fable. A fable is used in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

it and arrive at a solution which everyone will agree with." On this again a section of council led by
NoNo said that it would create "unnecessary" panic and we should stick to creating a committee like
we do in normal problems. Hearing this Fred came up with an idea and said while showing a glass

What we can do is to fill it with water and seal it with a fish bone. If on freezing during the night it
explodes, we call an assembly or we go with business as usual." Everyone agreed and the bottle was
kept under supervision of a penguin called Buddy. Next morning the bottle was found broken and
Louis ordered to call an assembly without letting the birds know why it is being called. The meeting
began and Alice told abut her swim to the cave, Fred about his observation and Buddy about the
bottle to all the penguins. Louis concluded by saying that they will find a way out of it – together.
Penguins were shocked but aware and were all thinking. As leaders Alice and Louis had taken the
first right step by "reducing complacency and increasing urgency".

Differences In Blue Penguin By Dr. Seuss And Blue Penguins
Discrimination has been present in society since ancient times. Discrimination is the theme of the
books, "The Sneetches and Other Stories" by Dr. Seuss and "Blue Penguin" by Petr Horáček. These
two books with a difference of more than fifty years show us, as some of its characters, Blue
Penguin from the book "Blue penguin", and a group of plain–belly Sneetches from the book "The
Sneetches and Other Stories" are similarly discriminated, but they face the situation differently. Blue
penguin accepts himself and the plain–belly Sneetches, unlike the blue penguin, try to be like the
star–belly Sneetches.
The story of the Sneetches and the story of the Blue penguin are both charming. One was written in
1961 and the other in 2015. Both stories with their wonderful characters teach us about the influence
of discrimination. The sneetches made a mistake trying to change their appearances to fit in the
society in which they lived but in the end, both stories showed that it is never too late to change and
begin to accept others and more important to accept ourselves. On the other hand, there is the story
of the blue penguin who was a strong penguin but he was constantly discriminated by the other
penguins to the point of wanting to leave the South Pole. Blue Penguin never wanted to change its
appearance or its way of being, unlike the sneetches he always accepted himself. as a result, the
other penguins had to accept him the way he was.

Relentless Progress : The Reconfiguration Of Children 's...
Jack Zipes in his book Relentless Progress : The Reconfiguration of Children 's Literature, Fairy
Tales, and Storytelling puts forward a valid perspective that the act of a child reading any form of
children's literature is set up to promote "adult aims and the power of the market" (4). Although this
perspective is important to remember when considering how the formation of childhood identity is
guided and influenced by children's literature, it is important to remember that the literature itself is
not to blame. Adults, parents, teachers, guardians or other people of influence in a child's life have
the power to provide children with literature that contains many alternative encompassing views of
the world to help shape the childs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe children and young people are positioned somewhere between the constructed child or
tabula rasa and the constructive child, one who is shaping their identity "out of what is culturally
available" (Stainton Roges as cited by Rudd 17). They have the ability to see the world with an open
mind, one free of biases until an event, idea or person influences them in some way. With that in
mind adults have the power to provide children with literature and stories to position them to read
the world in many different and inclusive ways adhering to Zipes' idea that in this case literature is
set up to "promote adult aims" (4). Although Zipes goes on to state that children's literature also
exists to promote "the power of the market" (4) in many cases I hope this is not completely true. In a
world that is more and more commercially driven, with the sheer volume of children's literature in
existance one would hope that some of the authors are trying to promote positivity to support
children and not purely or exclusively trying to make money.
One form of identity that is becoming more associated with a 'normal' childhood experience is the
child from a non–heteronormative family unit. Although Wayne Martino and Wendy Cumming–
Potvin's article is framed around literacy instruction in schools and pedagogical practice, their
message can be applied in a broader context to any adult providing text or stories to children.

Research Paper On Penguins
Describe:
The Emperor Penguin lives in Antarctica on the Antarctic ice surrounded by very cold water. They
are the largest Penguin to live with an average height of 45 and weigh on an average of 66lb. They
are also considered the most beautiful of all penguins that live right now. The Emperor Penguin has
big heads, thick necks, wedged shaped tail, and tiny flipper–like wings. They feed on fish, squid,
krill, and cephalopods where they catch it by diving into the ocean up to 700 feet. They remain
under the water for about 18 minutes while finding food. Both male and female penguins look very
much alike with the same colors and same size. To identify them, you would have to check their
behavior to see which one is a male or female. The female ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Most of the penguins form new pair bonds each year, which means that they mate with another
penguin each breeding season. There is a study that says only about 14.6% pair of penguins stay
with the same mate each year. The male penguin arrives to their nest before the female penguin
does. Since there are more female penguins than male penguins, there will be major competitions to
get a female. To attract females, the male penguin will stand still, put their head on their chest,
inhales, and give out a courtship call. They keep this position for a few seconds before moving to
another position. To nest, both penguins travel to a colonial nesting area at around March or early
April and lay a single egg in May or early June. The single egg weighs about 460 or 467g. Once
they lay an egg, the male penguin is in charge of incubating the egg while the female penguins go
back to an area to obtain food. The job of the male penguin is to keep the egg protected from any
danger and they also have to keep the egg between their legs so that it can be warm. If the egg is
exposed to the cold, the egg and baby penguin will die rapidly due to the severe temperature of the
Antarctic. It takes about 64 days for the egg to hatch and the age of the fledging is about 150 days.
Once the egg hatches, the female penguin comes back from bringing food to the nesting area. The
male penguin has been fasting for

Topic: Compare and contrast the Penguin the flightless bird and the Great Northerner diver.
I. Introduction
The two species I will be writing about is the Emperor penguin and the Great norther diver they are
both are from the class Aves (Magnuson, 2007) .In addition, the emperor penguin since is in the
class Aves, the penguins used to be able to flight which is an adaptive trait (Elliott et al., 2013).In
addition, physiologically they look different the Emperor penguin looks bigger and can't fly. In the
other hand the common loon is small, is able to fly, and swim (Mager et al., 2017). Moreover, by
using their differences and similarities the paper will be mostly about connecting the two species by

terrestrial environment (Ponganis PJ, 2015)
V. Common Loon Anatomy
a. The common loon body is long and heavy which not that common for birds (Padilla, 2014)
b. Wedded feet that are positioned in back of the body and unable loon to walk on land(Mager et al.,
2017)
c. In addition, They have air sacs which helps them and can fill them with air so they have better
flotation when they are in the water (Templeton & Mountjoy,2003).
VI. Feeding Behavior of the Emperor penguin
a. In order to be able to eat they swim and capture fish, krill, and some species of squid (Wallace,
2015)
b. Since the type of animal they eat are not in deep ocean floor they once need to dive about 20
meter to be able to feed. (Magnuson, 2007).
c. When the penguin are young they are feed by the father and mother until is able to hunt (Fretwell
e al. 2014).
VII. Feeding behavior of the Common Loon
a. Common loon when capturing prey feed of fish first they follow and capture the prey (Templeton
& Mountjoy,2003).
b. When loon are in lakes that have few fish their intake of food is less and as well they mobility (

Our Iceberg Is Melting : Changing And Succeeding Under Any...
About the Authors Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions is a
fable written by John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber. Dr. John Kotter was a professor at Harvard but
is now retired. Known as the "world's foremost leadership and change guru" (Kotter and Rathgeber,
2005, p. 147), Kotter is involved in many organizations that help others drive change and leadership.
Kotter has written multiple successful books about utilizing change and leadership for self–growth.
Holger Rathgeber is a "vice president of human resources, Western Europe, For Becton Dickinson,
one of the world's leading medical technology companies" (Kotter and Rathgeber, 2005, p. 147).
Both authors gained experience leading organizations, as well as, introducing change within others.
"Our goal in writing Our Iceberg Is Melting was to draw on the incredible power of good stories to
influence behavior over time – making individuals and their groups more competent in handling
change and producing better results." (Kotter and Rathgeber, 2005, p. 142). Kotter and Rathgeber,
collaborated in writing the tale to illustrate to readers an eight step process to follow in order to
successfully utilize change with great results. Novel summary The fable begins by introducing a
colony of emperor penguins living on an iceberg in the frozen Antarctic. Due to the colony having
lived on the iceberg for many years, and the iceberg having been there for years longer, the entire
colony believed the

Penguins And Oil Spills
Do you know how many penguins died in the past 10 year from oil spills ? 2.5 million penguins
have died from oil spills in the last 10 years.¨ the sea bird chronicle¨ and ¨the amazing penguin

One similarity between .¨ the sea bird chronicle¨ and ¨the amazing penguin rescue´´ is the conflict.
Both stories conflict is character vs nature because in the amazing penguin rescue a boat spills oil in
the ocean and almost killed all of the penguins. An example is ´´ as you come to the surface for air ,
the water feels unfamiliar it is to thick and it burns your eyes.´´(16 tarshis) This quote is significant
because the penguins can't swim when theres and oil spill because their feathers are to heavy.
Similarities in ´´the amazing penguin rescue´´ they had a character vs nature conflict. An example is
that the volunteers put sweaters on all of the penguins to keep them warm until they could get all of
the oil off the birds. This quote is significant because there is fear that if too much oil spills they

In ´´the seabird chronicle´´ they knitted sweater for the penguins and it creates a mood of happiness.
An example is the volunteers got busy with their knitting needles and within days the first penguins

volunteers spent their time knitting sweater for the penguins . In contrast ´´the amazing penguin

Emperor Penguins: What Is A Huddle?
Emperor penguins that live in the Antarctic winter, need to survive, and ensure reproduction
occurring in the winter. In order to achieve survival, emperors form huddles together. A huddle is a
dynamic mosaic of compact zones (Ancel, Gilbert, Poulind, Beaulieu, Thierry 91). Huddles are very
complex and can range anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand birds at a time, in which
individuals are closely packed together. Huddling is a huge warming mechanism, and they are
shaped like an ellipse. An emperor penguin being close to another individual does not mean it is
automatically in a huddle. There are certain requirements that deem an individual in a huddle. An
emperor's back has to be completely covered by another individual and the light ... Show more

There is a leeward side and exposed side. Most penguins don't leave the leeward side more often
than the exposed, even though it is expected for them to leave the exposed side the more often. It
doesn't matter which side they are on because all the sides of the huddle face the same climatic
conditions. Emperors follow behind other individuals when joining a huddle. This is why it doesn't
matter what side the penguins pick. Emperor penguins join huddles to absorb heat. When they get
too hot they need to release heat. So emperor penguin huddles need to break up at some points to
dissipate heat. Once a penguins body temperature reaches 37.5o C, they tend to leave the huddle
(Ancel, Gilbert, Poulind, Beaulieu, Thierry 96). According to André Ancel, the breaking up of
huddles is accompanied by a haze of warm air rising over the colony, which signifies heat
dissipation. When huddles break up the temperature decreases and the light intensity

Summary Of ' September Of The Penguins '
March of the Penguins is a documentary that provides its viewers with an inside look at a penguins
life. It shows us their mating cycle, the challenges they face and how they work together as
community. After watching this film I believe that I have learned new information about penguins
that I did not know before. Penguins are a great example to look at when trying to understand the
way that communities work. Through this film I was able to learn that for penguins working
together is crucial for their survival. After watching March of the Penguins I believe that humans
interact with one another is similar to way which penguins act as a community. Like penguins, we
rely on each other for safety, guidance, comfort, etc. Throughout March of the Penguins you are able
to see many examples of how penguins cooperation with one another. The first example of this is
seen when the male penguins begin their seventy mile journey to the mating ground. During this
time the penguins use each other's judgment to find their way. Another example of cooperation
within penguin communities is that the penguins will huddle together for warmth during the coldest
winter months. During these huddles the penguins constantly switch places in order to give each a
chance closer to the center of the huddle. You are also able to see cooperation throughout the entire
mating process. The pair will take turns caring and providing for their baby during this time. Once
the egg has arrived, the female

Bitzer's Rhetorical Model

English 101 Section 043
Professor Hayes
March 31, 2011
Bitzer's "The Rhetorical Situation" "Penguin responses to climate change in the Southern Ocean" by
Jaume Forcada and Philip N. Trathan (2009) was a study conducted to analyze and predict the
migrating patterns of different species of penguins due to changes in climate. (p. 1618) Also,
Forcada and Trathan investigate whether or not certain species of penguins possess phenotypic
plasticity (the ability of an organism to change its phenotype in response to changes in the
environment) (p. 1618). In order to properly conduct a textual analysis of this article, Lloyd Bitzer's

Although the authors of this article regularly use a multitude of sources, data, and statistics to
support their hypothesis, there are several (not all) which seem to be overly used and randomly
cited. This may serve as a constraint to the audience because if the information presented does not
seem to be entirely relevant, it may be a painless assumption for the audience that the issue at hand
is not an incredibly urgent one, but instead, a rhetoric discoursed just for the sake of rhetoric. Also,
the overwhelming wealth of information shown may serve as a distraction from the simple fact the
rhetoric is trying to convey: penguins are affected by climate change; in result, penguins affect the
environment. The information does not, however, prove to be faulty, but each piece of data seems to
be calculated accurately. For example, a table is provided that names each species of penguin, the
threats against them, and their resulting response to that threat. This makes it very clear whether
each species has the ability to adapt, or if the climate change has just caused them to disperse. Also,
each piece of data is affiliated with a source, which increases the audience's opinion of the writer's
character.
Another aspect of the research that does seem to constrain the author's point of view, however, is the
fact that no actual experiment was conducted by F & T.

A penguin is a bird that is typically found in Antartica that is flightless but can swim fast in arctic
waters. Humans are fascinated with the flightless bird with dense flippers because we think they
mate for life which is a goal most humans strive to accomplish in their lifetimes. However, it is not
plausible that penguins mate for life because the majority of the animals in the animal kingdom,
including humans, do not mate for life so why should they? It is not plausible that penguins mate for
life because of different factors like: monogamy versus life mates, 95 percent of animals do not mate
for life and each penguin species have differences in breeding seasons. Penguins, like most birds,
are monogamous within the duration of breeding season (Leu). Monogamy is defined as the practice
of being married, or in this case, having one mate at a time. There are two different versions of
monogamy; there is sexual monogamy and social monogamy . Sexual monogamy is the practice of
breeding with one mate at a time (Than). Social monogamy is when animals form pairs and to mate
and raise their offspring but still have affairs. Penguins are monogamous during the breeding season
once they choose aa partner unless they are unable to successfully produce offspring (Than). Most

Argumentative Essay About Penguins
Magnificent creatures of the land and sea, penguins have been around for a long time. Penguins
have adapted well over the course of many years, for swimming and hunting purposes. Everyone
knows that penguins are weird birds that can't fly and have to waddle on land, but what most people
don't know about are the harms that penguins have been exposed to and the fact that many penguins
are endangered, if not vulnerable to endangerment. Penguins are incredibly different from other
animals and are very important to the food chain, so they should be saved from endangerment.
Penguins indeed have adapted a great deal as time passed. According to recent research on old
fossils found in Peru, ancient penguins used to be six feet tall. They could swim and ... Show more

It seems unusual that birds can't fly, but it's brilliant that they can practically "fly underwater"! The
World Book (2008 ed.) states that penguins use the same motion to swim as other birds use to fly.
These flipper–y fowls can zoom through the water at a rate of eight miles an hour, but if they really
must, they can swim above twenty miles for the same amount of time! Penguins take breaths every
minute so they soar by the surface and pounce into the air on occasion, although they can hold their
breath for almost twenty minutes as they dive deep below into the water. Penguins can plunge as
deep as 900 feet. That's 300 times their average height! They are not only so fabulous underwater;
penguins can toboggan across the snow on their bellies or climb over rocks if they need to!
Rockhopper penguins, as one might assume, are named after their ability to hop over rocks easier
than most other penguins. Rockhoppers are also able to pencil dive (feet–first) into the water, unlike
most other penguins, and can leap back into the air as high as three times their height and grab onto
perches above them with their tiny

makes this huge impact, just like outer space. It's like going to the moon." ( John Krakauer) The
antarctic is home to lots of different animals. Some of these are Adelie, Gentoo and Emperor
penguins. Other animals are Elephant and leopard seals as well as Snow petrel, polar skuas and
albatrosses. Penguins are often the favorite.
Penguins are very interesting creatures because there is a variety of different features that
distinguish them from one another. The emperor penguin is approximately 3.8 feet and weigh in at
66 pounds, with a total population of 238,000. The adelie penguins height is 27.5 inches and it

The snow petrel is about 1 pound with a wingspan of 1.5 feet, it has a dense plumage with webbed
feet. Also they have deeply grooved and hooked bills. Some interesting facts are that right now their
are about 1000 pairs. Their name petrel means little peter. They eat krill, squid, molluscs and
carrion. The next bird is the polar skua. There 4 pounds with a 4 feet wing span. They are large and
heavily built, but look like baby seagulls. Some interesting facts are that their is several thousand
pairs. They live about 11 years old. Their nickname is raptor of the south. They live near the adelie
penguins, but they eat their eggs and chicks, Also they eat fish, squid, carrion and krill. The final
bird is the albatross. Their weight is 18 pounds with a wingspan of 11 feet. Their body is mainly
white. Some interesting facts are that some of them have the same lifespan that humans do. There
are 21,000 pairs, and they are supreme gliders. They eat fish and squid. Often follow visiting ships.
They are considered the most majestic of all antarctic birds.
As you can see there are many different types of animals in the antarctic. The animals discussed are
some of the more popular ones. Most people that can't travel to the antarctic can still see penguins at
local zoos. The antarctic has a rich history of lots of different types of animals as seen by even the

Emperor Penguins Essay
The Last March of the Emperor Penguins?
Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) in the Antarctic are fascinating flightless birds that are able
to withstand incredibly harsh environments, where wind chills can reach to –76°F. Even though
these penguins are able to survive the freezing temperatures, their breeding success and mortality
rates are based primarily on the sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice extent (SIE) throughout the
seasons. Sea ice concentration is a variable for climate scientists and nautical navigators to find the
area of sea ice compared to the total at a given point in the ocean, whereas sea ice extent refers to a
region as "ice–covered" or "not ice–covered." During the late 1970s, there was an elongated atypical
warm period with reduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sea ice is a vital breeding and nursing habitat for emperor penguins, where their colonies are formed
far from the open sea. The breeding penguins, would then, go on scavenging trips throughout the
entire development and chick nurturing stages. However, during the period with thick and wide sea
ice cover, the trips become longer. Adult penguins would have to use up more energy for travel,
which will result in lower offspring provisioning and hatching success (Barbraud & Weimerskirch,
2001, p. 185). Also, sea ice could influence the emperor penguin by "topdown processes".
Diminished sea ice could allow access to hunting areas of the emperor penguin by potential
predators, such as killer whales (Jenouvrier et al., (2012), p. 2759). Consequently, there are no
emperor penguin remains found in killer whale diets. Nevertheless, penguins that have used up so
much energy (especially males after their 4 months fast) are vulnerable to other predators, which
could result in a lower survival rate. This predicament is mainly caused by the change of variables
called "sea ice concentration" and "sea ice

ice and snow to get to their destination or to the food source.
The life cycle of the Emperor Penguin begins in January–March the younglings feed. In April the
younglings have a sixty to one–hundred mile march to rookery. In May the Penguins begin to mate,
the egg will hatch within forty–five to fifty days. In June to July the male Emperor Penguins

Emperor penguins are known to be the largest of all penguins, an average bird stands 45 inches tall.
The emperor penguins are slow and dignified, it's a beautiful bird with a blue grey back that shades
into a black tail, and a characteristically white belly flushed with yellow. Penguins interact with
humans in a interesting but different way. The Emperor penguins are near the top of the Southern
Ocean's food chain. Their varied menu changes with the season, some prey items are more
important than others. An adult emperor penguin eats 2–3 kilograms each day. When they need to be
fatten up before or at the start of the breeding season, they can eat as much as 6 kilograms per day.

These type of penguins don't have any symbiotic relationships with any organisms since they are the
largest of all penguins and live in the coldest climate on earth. When resources become limited,
organisms must compete for those organisms. Intra–specific competition occurs between emperor
penguin species, when they compete for nesting areas. This event gets intense because members of
the same species share the same resources.
Emperor Penguins are basically endangered species because the majority of colonies will have lost
half of their populations by the end of the century. Every few minutes, emperor penguins leap out of
the water when they are seeking for food. They are preyed on by seals and other animals, where they
become vulnerable when entering and exiting water at the beginning and end of breeding seasons.
The Emperor penguins mainly feed on fish, squid and krill. They search for their meals in the open
sea or in the gaps in the sea ice. Like other penguins, they are expert swimmers, usually spending
two and half to nine minutes underwater while diving to depths of more than 400

77 elephants were examined at a British zoo, and only 11 of them were able to walk correctly. It is
said that advancements are being made to improve elephant environments in captivity, but numerous
zoos have shut down their elephant attractions (Smith, 2008). Many people are attracted to keeping
wild animals as pets. They believe the wild animals to be interesting and exciting. At a young age,
the animals may seem easier to tame, but the older these animals get, the more aggressive they tend
to become. Many problems can develop from keeping a wild animal as a pet. Wild animals have
specific needs that have to be met, in order for them to prosper. "Only the most exceptional zoos and
wildlife centers provide a living area that somewhat resembles the natural habitat of these animals,
but it is virtually impossible to provide sufficient space for larger species"(CFHS). In captivity
animals do not lose their wild instincts. They can be extremely unpredictable, and if provoked they
can cause severe harm to people. Some wild animals, such as reptiles and hedgehogs can actually
carry bacteria called salmonella, which is very easily transmitted to humans. Exotic animals can be
very social, and need to have a companion of the same species living with them. If the animal is
kept isolated from its kind, then it can suffer psychologically (CFHS). Many wild animals that are
kept as pets often get abandoned because the owner was not able to meet of its needs. Others try to

with being different. Some very difficult topics are brought up in this movie, self–concept, values,
and goals. These topics can be very difficult for a child to understand.
The topic most touched on in this movie is on self–concept. From the beginning of the movie, it
shows the male penguins and the female penguins singing to each other to find their mates. They are
very particular with their songs they sing to each other and who they ended up with. A lot of the
males wanted to be with Norma Jean. Normal Jean, is seen as the most amazing penguin. She's

The Biological Adaptions Of Animals
Science – Writing Report
Compare and contrast the biological adaptions of animals that allow them to survive in the Antarctic
environment
Introduction:
The name Antartica comes from a greek word which means the opposite of north. Antarctica is the
southernmost continent and is known for having cold and windy conditions. It is the fifth largest
continent out of seven other continents in the world and the area of Antarctica is 14,000,000 km2
and around 90% of it is covered in ice.
The conditions in Antartica (min, max, average temps and wind, water and food availability) and
how these conditions would affect animal survival
The environment conditions in Antarctica is very harsh, it is known for being the most coldest and
windiest continent in the world as 98% of it is covered in ice which is 4.7 kilometres thick.
Antarctica is considered a desert due to the fact that it barely rains and how dry it is around the
continent. The weather temperature in Antarctica can go as low as –89.6 degrees celsius and a high
of –12.3 degrees celsius with an average temperature of –49 degrees celsius. This is because of the
height above sea levels, the atmosphere and the land masses around Antarctica which is why the
continent is an extremely cold place. In Antarctica the strong winds that are caused is due to the
strong winds which are the katabatic winds. The cold and dry katabatic wind is caused by the
downslope gravity flow which is formed by the cold air. The highest wind velocity in

Rhetorical Analysis For Global Warming
Global Warming is a huge problem for the environment. The earth's temperature has risen about 1–
degree Fahrenheit since 1900 the temperatures are continuing to rise setting record temperature
(Biello). This image is a public service announcement to turn off lights because it is a cause to
global warming. In the image a penguin is pulling on a plug to turn out a light. This image evokes an
emotional response because it has a baby penguin looking scared behind its mom, while the ice they
are on is melting. It also illustrates a point that leaving lights on can cause global warming because
it states it in the text. The light shining on the penguins looks like it is melting the ice they are
standing on. I selected this image because it caught my eye and then made me read the text, which
shows that it is an effective PSA. I also think global warming is a problem and I did not know that
leaving lights on made such a big impact. This image can be analyzed by looking at the six
rhetorical factors: character and action, setting, point of view, use of color, special effects, and image
presentation. First, the characters and action in this advertisement make a large impact on this
image. The penguins are struggling and are fearful for their lives. The animal's facial expressions
express how they are distressed that the light is causing the ice they are standing on to melt. This
displays how much of a problem global warming is and how we should be more fearful of the
impact it is making in the colder climates. One sources states "Specifically, more than two–thirds of
Antarctica's emperor penguin colonies will decline by more than 50 percent by the end of the
century under future climate change scenarios" (Palermo). This shows that global warming is truly
hurting the penguins and many other animals similar. The picture suggests an action to turn off
lights to help reduce the pollution. Second, the setting of the image takes place somewhere cold,
which is the main area affected by global warming. The penguins are standing on a block of ice
symbolizing the Arctic and the block of ice is melting. "The Science Daily reports that ice melting
rates were 25 times higher than expected in localized areas of Antarctica's largest

Emperor penguins tend to hunt for quick, midwater squid as well as fish and therefore they need to
be capable of diving to relatively deeper and remain submerged for longer period of time, in relation
to other penguin species. Emperor penguins can dive to depths of approximately 550–565 metres
towards the sea floor which is known as the "twilight zone "where less light is able to penetrate the
surface of the water. Emperor penguins are also able to hold their breath for approximately 22–27
minutes. Both of these aspects enable the emperor penguin to stay submerged in the water and locate
a source of food that other penguins cannot. Therefore, both swimming and diving adaptations are
vital to the Emperor penguin's ability to sustain life for the adult and newly born Emperor penguins,
as without them it would be much more difficult for them to survive their surroundings without a

Penguins are usually prefer their their habitats in those specific areas because they prefer colder and
colder weather than hot weather. Penguins only prefer cold over warmer weather because in the cold
penguins have to survive off of fish. From what i have read online it states that if that you're just a
small penguin you might live up to about 6 years maybe 7.
Penguins use their belly to reduce their body to drag in the water. You might not know this but the
only reason why penguins have bird shaped wings , it's because once they dive in they can go up to

Our Iceberg Is Melting, By John Kotter

of the fable and how they relate to our lives. First, let's introduce some of the more important
penguins – the Leadership Council members. Louis, the head of the Leadership Council, could

ultimately plays a very important role in the change process. Jordan, also known as the "Professor,"
was the brains of the council; he could perhaps be considered the 'researcher' of the group. Although
the penguins start out simply as individuals, in the end, they are a well working team capable of
effectively managing change. Fred, a quite curious penguin, studies the wonderful iceberg that the

climate change, reducing the production of green house gases and recycling domestic wastes have
been the campaign for different organizations across the globe. The World Wild Fund of Nature is
one that utilizes the ability of visualization to convey this message. The World Wild Fund of Nature
is an international non–profit organization whose mission is conserving natural environment and
reducing the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth. Recognizing the severe
consequences of global warming on the environment and different species, The World Wild Fund of
Nature has been putting tremendous efforts on educating the public about the impacts of green house
gases and the actions to reduce green house gases production. The advertisements created by The
World Wild Fund of Nature project this effort by proposing that many animals are losing their
original habitats due to global warming and we can help them by doing a few things in our daily life.
The overall vision of the advertisement is gloomy. Beside the penguins, the burning metal barrel,

Development in an Academically Diverse Classroom May 25, 2014 Reading The use of formal and
informal reading assessments provide important data that allow educators to identify at risk students
(Tompkins, 2010). The data collected from the assessments address any factors that may prohibit the
development of students' reading and writing skills. In addition to the assessments, the more an
educator can learn about students' backgrounds and their past reading, language development, and
writing experiences the more instructional strategies can be designed to specifically meet the needs
of diverse learners in the classroom. A second grade ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Ted Talks on Sustainability Examined

  • 1. Ted Talk Biography Ted Talks and The Four Principles of Sustainability GEOG 130–004 Patrick Naughton Professor Gibbons Bridgewater State University Introduction There are 5 Ted Talks being examined here today, all of which address sustainability in some form or another. The first speaker we cover is Sylvia Earle, an oceanic researcher with a Ted Talk about the importance of our oceans followed by a short summary of discussion by William Kamkwamba, a Malawian inventor who defied all odds. Thirdly, we will take a look at the Ted Talk held by Penguin expert, Dylan deNapoli and her experiences with penguin rescues. Next we will examine Leyla Acaroglu's Ted Talk about environmental folklore and finally, Satish Kumar, an Indian activist who tells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With guidance from his guru, Kumar and his friend set off without money, only open hearts. They met many new people, friends, and shared many new experiences. They met an American while walking along the Khyber Pass in Pakistan who had offered a ride, which they respectfully declined, only to end up at his front door in Philadelphia years later for a talk of good times. They also met with Bertrand Russell, the philosopher who inspired their movement from the beginning and who then offered them passage to The United States. The two movies have different plots at first glance, but later on show resemblances when analyzed more closely. The two protagonist in Happy Feet (Mumble) and Kung Fu Panda (Po) both start off unfitting and strange, later on being rejected by their peers and community. They want to become accepted by others, but struggle to redeem themselves. Happy Feet and Kung Fu Panda are different, because one is about a penguin that can 't sing and the other is about a Panda that wants to learn Kung Fu and is unfit, but both show many similarities. Then in Happy Feet, Mumble grew older and the penguins don't hang out with him, because of his weird tap dancing. He's trying to fit in and make friends, so he goes to a party. Mumble then ruins the celebration with his awful singing, and leaves the group. Mumble was too different and disapproved by the other penguins, because of his strange tap dancing and unable to sing. Mumble is then casted away from the penguin community. His Father approves and think it's the best decision. He then leaves on a floating iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. On Kung Fu Panda, Po was thought to be accidently chosen of being the Dragon Warrior. His idols were his new peers, but they were displeased with the decision. His Master and his peers disapprove him and think he unqualified of being the Dragon Warrior, especially for being obese and think he got in by accident, and refuse to acknowledge him. He is being made fun of, for being fat and clumsy. His Master and his peers try to remove Po. Po's dad says Kung Fu isn't for everyone and told him to work back with him, in the noodle shop. Most people in the world can see, agree, and understand that we have global warming and climate change issues that affect both plant and animal around the world. We just need to come together on what needs to be done about global warming and climate change and get it done to save ourselves, animals and the environment that depend on us to do something. The biggest problems have been trying to get an agreement on what needs to be done. A lot of people feel it's not their problem, important enough or its nothing we can do about it now. • 13. March Of Penguins In March of the Penguins, the author explains in a subjective point of view that it's not the fault of another animal for needing to feed by eating the penguins. For the Penguins, they survive many harsh winters and attacks from animals such as the Sea Lion, because of this show of strength in one of the world's harshest of environments, the Author admires these Penguins and how they live. Ways they show their loyalty to their home and ways they survive this hellish place are simple, yet extremely hazardous tasks. For those who have survived, their child is awaiting food from the mother. After feeding the child, they pass it back to the mother as the father is in need of food. Before departing, the Father and Child sing to each other to remember who is who after the father returns from feeding. As time passes, these chicks slowly grow older and get much larger, eventually losing their baby feathers. During most of their growing up stage, they are left alone as they are old enough to look out for themselves and that of their fellow penguins. Summary: Our Iceberg Is Melting by John Kotter Summary: Our Iceberg is Melting Foreword by Spenser Johnson: One the surface, the story of this book appears to be a fable that is relatively easy to grasp, but it does subtly impart an invaluable lesson on change. The book covers John Kotter's Eight Steps to bring about successful organizational change and can be equally useful for a high–school student as it is for a CEO of a multi–national organization. Welcome Note by John Kotter: People do not often understand the need for change. Businesses, school systemsand even nations do not know understand what to do, how to make it happen and how to make it stick. Will we answer that we knew and did not act?" She continued "We should let everyone know about it and arrive at a solution which everyone will agree with." On this again a section of council led by NoNo said that it would create "unnecessary" panic and we should stick to creating a committee like we do in normal problems. Hearing this Fred came up with an idea and said while showing a glass bottle "This looks like ice, but is not ice. It does not melt and my father had found it near the shore. What we can do is to fill it with water and seal it with a fish bone. If on freezing during the night it explodes, we call an assembly or we go with business as usual." Everyone agreed and the bottle was kept under supervision of a penguin called Buddy. Next morning the bottle was found broken and Louis ordered to call an assembly without letting the birds know why it is being called. The meeting began and Alice told abut her swim to the cave, Fred about his observation and Buddy about the bottle to all the penguins. • 21. Differences In Blue Penguin By Dr. Seuss And Blue Penguins Discrimination has been present in society since ancient times. Discrimination is the theme of the books, "The Sneetches and Other Stories" by Dr. Seuss and "Blue Penguin" by Petr Horáček. These two books with a difference of more than fifty years show us, as some of its characters, Blue Penguin from the book "Blue penguin", and a group of plain–belly Sneetches from the book "The Sneetches and Other Stories" are similarly discriminated, but they face the situation differently. Blue penguin accepts himself and the plain–belly Sneetches, unlike the blue penguin, try to be like the star–belly Sneetches. The story of the Sneetches and the story of the Blue penguin are both charming. One was written in 1961 and the other in 2015. Both stories with their wonderful characters teach us about the influence of discrimination. The sneetches made a mistake trying to change their appearances to fit in the society in which they lived but in the end, both stories showed that it is never too late to change and begin to accept others and more important to accept ourselves. On the other hand, there is the story of the blue penguin who was a strong penguin but he was constantly discriminated by the other penguins to the point of wanting to leave the South Pole. Blue Penguin never wanted to change its appearance or its way of being, unlike the sneetches he always accepted himself. as a result, the other penguins had to accept him the way he was. • 29. Relentless Progress : The Reconfiguration Of Children 's... Jack Zipes in his book Relentless Progress : The Reconfiguration of Children 's Literature, Fairy Tales, and Storytelling puts forward a valid perspective that the act of a child reading any form of children's literature is set up to promote "adult aims and the power of the market" (4). Although this perspective is important to remember when considering how the formation of childhood identity is guided and influenced by children's literature, it is important to remember that the literature itself is not to blame. Adults, parents, teachers, guardians or other people of influence in a child's life have the power to provide children with literature that contains many alternative encompassing views of the world to help shape the childs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe children and young people are positioned somewhere between the constructed child or tabula rasa and the constructive child, one who is shaping their identity "out of what is culturally available" (Stainton Roges as cited by Rudd 17). They have the ability to see the world with an open mind, one free of biases until an event, idea or person influences them in some way. With that in mind adults have the power to provide children with literature and stories to position them to read the world in many different and inclusive ways adhering to Zipes' idea that in this case literature is set up to "promote adult aims" (4). Although Zipes goes on to state that children's literature also exists to promote "the power of the market" (4) in many cases I hope this is not completely true. In a world that is more and more commercially driven, with the sheer volume of children's literature in existance one would hope that some of the authors are trying to promote positivity to support children and not purely or exclusively trying to make money. One form of identity that is becoming more associated with a 'normal' childhood experience is the child from a non–heteronormative family unit. Although Wayne Martino and Wendy Cumming– Potvin's article is framed around literacy instruction in schools and pedagogical practice, their message can be applied in a broader context to any adult providing text or stories to children. ... They are the largest Penguin to live with an average height of 45 and weigh on an average of 66lb. They are also considered the most beautiful of all penguins that live right now. The Emperor Penguin has big heads, thick necks, wedged shaped tail, and tiny flipper–like wings. They feed on fish, squid, krill, and cephalopods where they catch it by diving into the ocean up to 700 feet. They remain under the water for about 18 minutes while finding food. Both male and female penguins look very much alike with the same colors and same size. To identify them, you would have to check their behavior to see which one is a male or female. The female ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the penguins form new pair bonds each year, which means that they mate with another penguin each breeding season. There is a study that says only about 14.6% pair of penguins stay with the same mate each year. The male penguin arrives to their nest before the female penguin does. Since there are more female penguins than male penguins, there will be major competitions to get a female. To attract females, the male penguin will stand still, put their head on their chest, inhales, and give out a courtship call. They keep this position for a few seconds before moving to another position. To nest, both penguins travel to a colonial nesting area at around March or early April and lay a single egg in May or early June. The single egg weighs about 460 or 467g. Once they lay an egg, the male penguin is in charge of incubating the egg while the female penguins go back to an area to obtain food. The job of the male penguin is to keep the egg protected from any danger and they also have to keep the egg between their legs so that it can be warm. If the egg is exposed to the cold, the egg and baby penguin will die rapidly due to the severe temperature of the Antarctic. It takes about 64 days for the egg to hatch and the age of the fledging is about 150 days. Once the egg hatches, the female penguin comes back from bringing food to the nesting area. Introduction The two species I will be writing about is the Emperor penguin and the Great norther diver they are both are from the class Aves (Magnuson, 2007) .In addition, the emperor penguin since is in the class Aves, the penguins used to be able to flight which is an adaptive trait (Elliott et al., 2013).In addition, physiologically they look different the Emperor penguin looks bigger and can't fly. In the other hand the common loon is small, is able to fly, and swim (Mager et al., 2017). • 50. Emperor Penguins: What Is A Huddle? Emperor penguins that live in the Antarctic winter, need to survive, and ensure reproduction occurring in the winter. In order to achieve survival, emperors form huddles together. A huddle is a dynamic mosaic of compact zones (Ancel, Gilbert, Poulind, Beaulieu, Thierry 91). Huddles are very complex and can range anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand birds at a time, in which individuals are closely packed together. Huddling is a huge warming mechanism, and they are shaped like an ellipse. An emperor penguin being close to another individual does not mean it is automatically in a huddle. There are certain requirements that deem an individual in a huddle. An emperor's back has to be completely covered by another individual and the light ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a leeward side and exposed side. Most penguins don't leave the leeward side more often than the exposed, even though it is expected for them to leave the exposed side the more often. It doesn't matter which side they are on because all the sides of the huddle face the same climatic conditions. Emperors follow behind other individuals when joining a huddle. This is why it doesn't matter what side the penguins pick. Emperor penguins join huddles to absorb heat. When they get too hot they need to release heat. So emperor penguin huddles need to break up at some points to dissipate heat. Once a penguins body temperature reaches 37.5o C, they tend to leave the huddle (Ancel, Gilbert, Poulind, Beaulieu, Thierry 96). According to André Ancel, the breaking up of huddles is accompanied by a haze of warm air rising over the colony, which signifies heat dissipation. It shows us their mating cycle, the challenges they face and how they work together as community. After watching this film I believe that I have learned new information about penguins that I did not know before. Penguins are a great example to look at when trying to understand the way that communities work. Through this film I was able to learn that for penguins working together is crucial for their survival. After watching March of the Penguins I believe that humans interact with one another is similar to way which penguins act as a community. Like penguins, we rely on each other for safety, guidance, comfort, etc. Throughout March of the Penguins you are able to see many examples of how penguins cooperation with one another. The first example of this is seen when the male penguins begin their seventy mile journey to the mating ground. During this time the penguins use each other's judgment to find their way. Another example of cooperation within penguin communities is that the penguins will huddle together for warmth during the coldest winter months. During these huddles the penguins constantly switch places in order to give each a chance closer to the center of the huddle. You are also able to see cooperation throughout the entire mating process. The pair will take turns caring and providing for their baby during this time. Once the egg has arrived, the female ... Trathan (2009) was a study conducted to analyze and predict the migrating patterns of different species of penguins due to changes in climate. (p. 1618) Also, Forcada and Trathan investigate whether or not certain species of penguins possess phenotypic plasticity (the ability of an organism to change its phenotype in response to changes in the environment) (p. 1618). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the authors of this article regularly use a multitude of sources, data, and statistics to support their hypothesis, there are several (not all) which seem to be overly used and randomly cited. This may serve as a constraint to the audience because if the information presented does not seem to be entirely relevant, it may be a painless assumption for the audience that the issue at hand is not an incredibly urgent one, but instead, a rhetoric discoursed just for the sake of rhetoric. Also, the overwhelming wealth of information shown may serve as a distraction from the simple fact the rhetoric is trying to convey: penguins are affected by climate change; in result, penguins affect the environment. The information does not, however, prove to be faulty, but each piece of data seems to be calculated accurately. For example, a table is provided that names each species of penguin, the threats against them, and their resulting response to that threat. This makes it very clear whether each species has the ability to adapt, or if the climate change has just caused them to disperse. Also, each piece of data is affiliated with a source, which increases the audience's opinion of the writer's character. Another aspect of the research that does seem to constrain the author's point of view, however, is the fact that no actual experiment was conducted by F & T. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Penguins Research Paper A penguin is a bird that is typically found in Antartica that is flightless but can swim fast in arctic waters. Humans are fascinated with the flightless bird with dense flippers because we think they mate for life which is a goal most humans strive to accomplish in their lifetimes. However, it is not plausible that penguins mate for life because the majority of the animals in the animal kingdom, including humans, do not mate for life so why should they? It is not plausible that penguins mate for life because of different factors like: monogamy versus life mates, 95 percent of animals do not mate for life and each penguin species have differences in breeding seasons. Penguins, like most birds, are monogamous within the duration of breeding season (Leu). Monogamy is defined as the practice of being married, or in this case, having one mate at a time. There are two different versions of monogamy; there is sexual monogamy and social monogamy . Sexual monogamy is the practice of breeding with one mate at a time (Than). Penguins have adapted well over the course of many years, for swimming and hunting purposes. Everyone knows that penguins are weird birds that can't fly and have to waddle on land, but what most people don't know about are the harms that penguins have been exposed to and the fact that many penguins are endangered, if not vulnerable to endangerment. Penguins are incredibly different from other animals and are very important to the food chain, so they should be saved from endangerment. Penguins indeed have adapted a great deal as time passed. It seems unusual that birds can't fly, but it's brilliant that they can practically "fly underwater"! The World Book (2008 ed.) states that penguins use the same motion to swim as other birds use to fly. These flipper–y fowls can zoom through the water at a rate of eight miles an hour, but if they really must, they can swim above twenty miles for the same amount of time! Penguins take breaths every minute so they soar by the surface and pounce into the air on occasion, although they can hold their breath for almost twenty minutes as they dive deep below into the water. Penguins can plunge as deep as 900 feet. That's 300 times their average height! They are not only so fabulous underwater; penguins can toboggan across the snow on their bellies or climb over rocks if they need to! Rockhopper penguins, as one might assume, are named after their ability to hop over rocks easier than most other penguins. Rockhoppers are also able to pencil dive (feet–first) into the water, unlike most other penguins, and can leap back into the air as high as three times their height and grab onto perches above them with their tiny ... • 82. Emperor Penguins Essay The Last March of the Emperor Penguins? Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) in the Antarctic are fascinating flightless birds that are able to withstand incredibly harsh environments, where wind chills can reach to –76°F. Even though these penguins are able to survive the freezing temperatures, their breeding success and mortality rates are based primarily on the sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice extent (SIE) throughout the seasons. Sea ice concentration is a variable for climate scientists and nautical navigators to find the area of sea ice compared to the total at a given point in the ocean, whereas sea ice extent refers to a region as "ice–covered" or "not ice–covered." During the late 1970s, there was an elongated atypical warm period with reduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sea ice is a vital breeding and nursing habitat for emperor penguins, where their colonies are formed far from the open sea. The breeding penguins, would then, go on scavenging trips throughout the entire development and chick nurturing stages. However, during the period with thick and wide sea ice cover, the trips become longer. Adult penguins would have to use up more energy for travel, which will result in lower offspring provisioning and hatching success (Barbraud & Weimerskirch, 2001, p. 185). Also, sea ice could influence the emperor penguin by "topdown processes". Diminished sea ice could allow access to hunting areas of the emperor penguin by potential predators, such as killer whales (Jenouvrier et al., (2012), p. 2759). Consequently, there are no emperor penguin remains found in killer whale diets. Nevertheless, penguins that have used up so much energy (especially males after their 4 months fast) are vulnerable to other predators, which could result in a lower survival rate. The Biological Adaptions Of Animals Science – Writing Report Compare and contrast the biological adaptions of animals that allow them to survive in the Antarctic environment Introduction: The name Antartica comes from a greek word which means the opposite of north. Antarctica is the southernmost continent and is known for having cold and windy conditions. It is the fifth largest continent out of seven other continents in the world and the area of Antarctica is 14,000,000 km2 and around 90% of it is covered in ice. The conditions in Antartica (min, max, average temps and wind, water and food availability) and how these conditions would affect animal survival The environment conditions in Antarctica is very harsh, it is known for being the most coldest and windiest continent in the world as 98% of it is covered in ice which is 4.7 kilometres thick. Antarctica is considered a desert due to the fact that it barely rains and how dry it is around the continent. The weather temperature in Antarctica can go as low as –89.6 degrees celsius and a high of –12.3 degrees celsius with an average temperature of –49 degrees celsius. This is because of the height above sea levels, the atmosphere and the land masses around Antarctica which is why the continent is an extremely cold place. In Antarctica the strong winds that are caused is due to the strong winds which are the katabatic winds. The cold and dry katabatic wind is caused by the downslope gravity flow which is formed by the cold air. The highest wind velocity in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 114. Rhetorical Analysis For Global Warming Global Warming is a huge problem for the environment. The earth's temperature has risen about 1– degree Fahrenheit since 1900 the temperatures are continuing to rise setting record temperature (Biello). This image is a public service announcement to turn off lights because it is a cause to global warming. In the image a penguin is pulling on a plug to turn out a light. This image evokes an emotional response because it has a baby penguin looking scared behind its mom, while the ice they are on is melting. It also illustrates a point that leaving lights on can cause global warming because it states it in the text. The light shining on the penguins looks like it is melting the ice they are standing on. I selected this image because it caught my eye and then made me read the text, which shows that it is an effective PSA. I also think global warming is a problem and I did not know that leaving lights on made such a big impact. This image can be analyzed by looking at the six rhetorical factors: character and action, setting, point of view, use of color, special effects, and image presentation. First, the characters and action in this advertisement make a large impact on this image. The penguins are struggling and are fearful for their lives. The animal's facial expressions express how they are distressed that the light is causing the ice they are standing on to melt. This displays how much of a problem global warming is and how we should be more fearful of the impact it is making in the colder climates. One sources states "Specifically, more than two–thirds of Antarctica's emperor penguin colonies will decline by more than 50 percent by the end of the century under future climate change scenarios" (Palermo). This shows that global warming is truly hurting the penguins and many other animals similar. The picture suggests an action to turn off lights to help reduce the pollution. Second, the setting of the image takes place somewhere cold, which is the main area affected by global warming. The penguins are standing on a block of ice symbolizing the Arctic and the block of ice is melting. "The Science Daily reports that ice melting rates were 25 times higher than expected in localized areas of Antarctica's largest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Emperor penguins tend to hunt for quick, midwater squid as well as fish and therefore they need to be capable of diving to relatively deeper and remain submerged for longer period of time, in relation to other penguin species. Emperor penguins can dive to depths of approximately 550–565 metres towards the sea floor which is known as the "twilight zone "where less light is able to penetrate the surface of the water. Emperor penguins are also able to hold their breath for approximately 22–27 minutes. Both of these aspects enable the emperor penguin to stay submerged in the water and locate a source of food that other penguins cannot. Therefore, both swimming and diving adaptations are vital to the Emperor penguin's ability to sustain life for the adult and newly born Emperor penguins, as without them it would be much more difficult for them to survive their surroundings without a food ... In reality he hosts these extravagant parties in hopes that maybe one day Daisy, his one true love, would come. Just like how he had bought the house right across from her so he could stay away but not too far. He asked questions of clarification but also seems to have a harsher tone with Irving when he tries to expand his questioning on a matter that has already been debated in much length. In the movie, it isn't until he gives his judgment that he plays a vital role, which is to be expected for a judge making a ruling on a matter as important as this one. From the first sentence of John Kotter's bestselling book, Our Iceberg Is Melting, it is difficult to tell that one is about to read a great fable about how to manage change in business as well as everyday life. ! The following summary will explain the key moments of the fable and how they relate to our lives. First, let's introduce some of the more important penguins – the Leadership Council members. Louis, the head of the Leadership Council, could perhaps be considered the CEO of the penguin colony. Alice is a smart, aggressive member of the council, and is Fred's loyal confidant. Buddy is a young penguin council member who may not be the brightest bulb in the box, but brings an element of trust among the council members. Fred is the most curious of all of the penguins; although he was an 'unknown' penguin in the beginning, he ultimately plays a very important role in the change process. Jordan, also known as the "Professor," was the brains of the council; he could perhaps be considered the 'researcher' of the group. Although the penguins start out simply as individuals, in the end, they are a well working team capable of effectively managing change. Fred, a quite curious penguin, studies the wonderful iceberg that the penguins consider home. He comes across a problem which suggests that their beloved iceberg may be in danger of ...
