How Did Emmett Till Influence The Civil Rights Movement
"He only whistled. But the woman he whistled at was white. He was black. A few days later, her
angry husband roused him from bed, told him to hurry up and dress. Three days later, his terribly
battered body surfaced in the muddy Tallahatchie River where it straightens out for a stretch through
the cotton–rich flatlands of the delta. His name was Emmett Till. He was 14 years old." (Jallon,
1985) Over 60 years ago, the murder of Emmett Till shaped the course of human history
significantly. News of his death sparked outrage worldwide, and served as the catalyst for the
emerging American Civil Rights Movement. Now of course, the first things that come to mind when
the Civil Rights Movement is mentioned are people such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King.
However, I firmly believe that another name should join that list. Mamie Till–Bradley, Emmett's
mother, worked tirelessly to ensure that his death would not be in vain, and his name would never
be forgotten. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She did this by becoming a civil rights activist – delivering moving speeches to large crowds across
the nation on the topic of racial inequality and advocating for children in poor neighbourhoods. It's
also important to note that her actions inspired more than just the general public. One such person
was Rosa Parks. Parks herself told Mamie Till that it was the image of Emmett's disfigured face in
the casket that was on her mind when she refused to give up her seat on the bus, a hundred days
after Till's death. Rosa Parks would later be cited as one of Martin Luther King's inspirations for
taking on the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which many consider to be the official start of the Civil
Rights Movement. In a way, I suppose Mamie Till's passion to spread the word about what had
happened to her son had created a ripple of change, which is why I think she is so

Emmett Till was a 14 year old old, African American who was visiting family in Money,
Mississippi. Emmett was dared to go to a store and ask out the stor owner, Carolyn Braynt. Emmetts
friends heard him say "hey baby" as he was walking out. Carolyne said he wolf–whistled at her.
Carolyn was very angr, so she expressed what happened to her husband. Roy bryant, Carolynes
husband then went and got his brother in law, J.W. Milam. Early in the morning hours, they
kidnapped Emmett. They then took him to the river, gouged out his eyes, tied him to a cotton gin
fan, shot him twice, and threw his body in the river. Although no one really knows what happened in
the store Emmett didn't get justice. Serling faced many challenges from advertisers and

Themes In A Visit From The Goon Squad
It is said that a man can never walk into the same river twice, not because the river is changing– that
after all is inevitable–but because the man will never be the same man as he once was. Time, like a
river flows in a set direction and once past no amount of nostalgia is capable of reversing its course.
Just as it is impossible to reverse the passage of time, it is impossible to retain a past identity.
Jennifer Egan's novel, a Visit from the Goon Squad, is a collection of short stories that each have a
distinct voice and style. Although each chapter can stand alone, they are bound together by thematic
elements and a complex web of relationships centered around Bennie Salazar a music executive and
his assistant Sasha. In this passage Egan's fifth narrator, Jocelyn, a recovering drug addict and a
childhood friend of Bennie Salazar, returns to the Los Angeles home of her teenage love interest,
Lou,a man old enough to be her father who drove her into adapting the sex, drugs and rock and roll
lifestyle. With Lou on his deathbed, the now forty–three year old Jocelyn reunites with Rhea,
another high school friend, and ponders the impact that time has had on their lives. This passage
suggests the destructiveness of time on characters and relationships. Using setting, word choice, and
personification Egan presents time as truly being a goon.
To start, Egan employs setting to reveal the separation time has created between characters and the
characters and their former

Emmett Till was born in 1941 in Chicago and grew up in a middle–class black neighborhood. Till

Emmett Till was born July 25, 1941 in Chicago. His parents were Mamie and Louis Till. When his
father became abusive, his mother separated from him. She remarried twice and divorced once and

Michael Jackson Sang The Famous Line, If You Wan Na Make...
If humanity takes the time to sit down and internalize, one of the questions coming to mind has to
do with why is it often afraid of change? Change is in fact a big theme in the 1987 hit song "The
Man in the Mirror " (Appendix E), where the late artist Michael Jackson sang the famous line, "If
you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change." Fast forward
to a modern–day 2016 filled with political unrest, poverty, and waning human rights, Michael
Jackson's message of self–reflection eventually translating into social change finds its relevancy
today, despite the song 's thirty–years–old tenure. It introduces the notion that all individuals in
society are essentially human, even in spite of humanity 's tendency to demonize other belief
systems. Even Saint Mother Theresa agreed with this point, once saying that "if we have no peace, it
is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other." The only way to reconcile the fact that
differences don't corrupt our humanity is in society's willingness to be flexible to different points of
view and recognize the structures of prejudice in a modern context. What then is the harm in paring
away our egos to realize that we all have something to bring to the table? Forms of art that even
attempt to evoke this message of solidarity include poetry, which in itself is a free medium that
poets utilize to express their thoughts and emotions. Langston Hughes, Paul Laurence Dunbar,
Maya Angelou, and

Importance of Early American Women Writers Essay
What could be said to early American women's writers except, thank you? The first American
women's writers opened doors and laid the foundation for future women's writers and readers.
Today's women raise children, supervise households, and work outside the home with every modern
convenience available, and as you would expect do not find the time to write, except for a grocery
list. Early American women raised children and supervised households without the modern
conveniences of today and in some way made time to write the first poetry of the "New World." For
example, Everette Emerson gives a picture of Anne Bradstreet a housewife who stole hours from
sleep for writing gave women American writers their start (4). Different styles of ... Show more

Bradstreet poetry was considered "plain style." She offered the reader a look into the private world,
her world. "Upon Burning in Our House" was a simple style poem about the truth put into simple
words, as were all of Bradstreet's poems. Bradstreet tells about faith in God and belongings lost in
the poem. Bradstreet addressed her husband, children, God, and community in her poems. Her
maternal instinct and dedication were present in her writing. In the poem, "The Author to Her
Book," Bradstreet compares the poem itself to a child, her child:
Thou ill–formed offspring of my feeble brain,
Who after birth did'st by my side remain,
Till snatched from thence by friends, less wise than true,
Who thee abroad, exposed to public view,
Made thee in rags, halting to th' press to trudge,
These errors were not lessened (all may judge).
At thy return my blushing was not small,
my rambling brat in (in print) should mother call,
I cast thee by as one unfit for light,
My visage was so irksome in my sight;
Yet being mine own, at length affection would
thy blemishes amend, if so I could:
I washed thy face, but defects I saw,
And rubbing off a spot, still made a flaw...(Meridian 33.1–14)
Bradstreet wanted her poetry to remain private. She accepted her poetry unconditionally, like a
mother accepts her child, because if she tried to correct the poem's flaws more flaws appeared. A

Mary Gaitskill's Tiny Smiling Daddy Essay
The most difficult time in a child's relationship with his/her parents is mainly during its teenage
years. These are times of rebellion, disagreement, strong emotion, psychological changes and sexual
experimentation just to name a few. In Mary Gaitskill's short story "Tiny, Smiling Daddy", the main
theme "of how people seek intimacy but don't know how to achieve it" (Gaitskill, 289) is conveyed
by the author through the characters, symbolism and setting and imagery. Firstly, the two main
characters in this story, Kitty and Stew, are crucial elements of the story to present its theme. When
Kitty was a child, her and Stew were intimate. She would laugh at her father's jokes about playing
with the hairs of his nose. (Gaitskill, 290) This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It symbolizes how Stew misses his daughter and how he would like to be close to her. Another
symbol in this story is the "tiny, smiling daddy" which Stew does not agree with. This element
represents the inner parent meaning that it is Kitty's own judgment that helped her get through
difficult times: "I would have acknowledged my own needs and created the possibility to connect
with what therapists call ‘the good parent' in myself."(Gaitskill, 295) This tiny, smiling daddy
stands for everything that Stew is not: a supportive, accepting and truly loving parent with who
Kitty can have intimacy. Then, there is the relationship Stew had with his own father which can be
viewed as a symbol that reflects on the relationship between Stew and Kitty. Stew admired his
father, yet he rejected him: "Its almost godlike stillness and expressionless filled him with
admiration and reassurance, until one day, his father slowly looked up from his cereal, met his eyes
and said, ‘Stop staring at me you little shit.'"(Gaitskill, 298) Kitty herself experienced similar from
Stew himself: "And if you ever try to come back here I'm going to spit

Creative Story : A Short Story
Adam dashed through the forest, dodging branches and thorns as some of them brushed his clothes
and tore at his flesh. He didn't care, he could heal cuts, you can't heal a corpse, however, and so he
just kept on running. His legs hurt like they had a fire in them, burning him from the inside out, but
he couldn't feel it as the drumming in his head and the pounding of a chase was all he could hear. He
leaped over a fallen tree, careful of the precious bundle in his arms. He could hear the shouts and
gunfire of the pistols close behind. He knew it was life or death. A bullet soared by grazing his
shoulder. He clenched in agony, but could not stop. Everything was a blur, he came up to the edge of
the light, seeing his death behind him and their short lived lives in their minds. He took one last look
at her beautiful face, and jumped into the gorge, praying for them to have a quick death. Adam stood
there in pure darkness, and as he stood there not seeing, feeling, or hearing. He had only the sense of
knowing, almost like he was in a dream. He could not see anything but black and little specks of
royal blue and faded ivory. As his senses failed him, however, he could tell that he was not in a
room, he was aware of where he wasn't. He knew he was in the gorge, the valley, his almost death.
He knew he was still clutching onto the only thing he had left to love. He had to wake up for that
reason, he had to wake up for her. With all the strength he could muster, he pried his heavy

What Is The Theme Of The Morgue Scene
In Thérèse Raquin, Émile Zola uses specific scenes in order to convey and communicate explicit
concepts from which the reader can extrapolate key themes in the novel, and the Morgue scene of
Chapter XIII is an excellent example of this. Such scenes also offer a comprehensive depiction of
the times and the Morgue scene gives us a slice of Parisian life during the 19th century. Across the
span of this chapter, Zola's unflinching depiction of the morgue, the bodies lying on the slabs, and
most importantly, his meticulous illustration of those who visit the morgue for titillation or other
reasons, impose profound connotations of Parisian society in that period. One of the reasons for
such a realistically lifelike extract was Zola's deliberate effort ... Show more content on

Zola regarded Manet as one of the "masters of the future" and defended him against harsh critics, as
he strongly believed in the way Manet expressed himself in his paintings. Manet's "Olympia", in
particular, generated intense scandal due to its sexual connotations and many disapproved of the
painting. However, Manet's talent motivated Zola to include crude sexuality and painterly technique
in his writing. In truth, the theme of sexuality permeates the entire novel, even in the Morgue scene;
Zola's portrayal of the coarse primitiveness of human nature is again evident when the "gangs of
kids" come in "stopping only by women's bodies" to "stare impudently at the naked breasts". This is
a perversely disturbing spectacle for youngsters to see, but Zola approaches it matter–of–factly,
commenting without irony that "It is in the Morgue that young street urchins have their first
mistress". This graphic image of the exposed breasts creates an abhorrent atmosphere for the reader,
signifying an objectification of women during that time as this piece of writing can be seen as
patriarchal novel. Zola furthers this impression by describing the Morgue as "a show that anyone
can afford,

Limited opportunities for women to share their opinions publicly throughout the Nineteenth century
caused an abundance of females to communicate their ideas through writing. Catharine Maria
Sedgwick was among the first of American authors to publish historical and other fiction. Much of
her work deals with the role of white women in society, especially involving the Cult of Domesticity
or True Womanhood. Sedgwick managed to incorporate her unorthodox views on women's
behavior, relationships, religion, and people foreign to her culture, while still appealing to a broad
audience. Her novels, A New–England Tale, published in 1822 and Hope ... Show more content on

Writers on religion tended to treat piety as a medicine for the wants of women, teaching them it was
better to pray than to think.
Purity was no less important than piety. Women were warned men would try to steal their purity, but
they must be strong and resist the temptation. Thomas Branagan threatened women a horrible fate if
they did not remain pure in the 1808 publication, The Excellency of the Female Character
Vindicated, "You will be left in silent sadness to bewail your credulity, imbecility, duplicity, and
premature prostitution" (Welter 103). Women of the Nineteenth Century were taught to believe the
contradiction that purity before marriage brought happiness, until it was time to be married and all
innocence is lost. Without proper preparation to deal with the moral dilemma women were expected
to deal with this severe change in their lives without questions (Welter 104).
The next requirement for being a "true woman" was submissiveness. According to society men were
superior to women by "God's appointment." If they acted otherwise they "tampered with the order
of the Universe" (Welter 105). A "true woman" would not question this idea because she already
understands her place. Grace Greenwood explained to the women of the Nineteenth Century, "True
feminine genius is ever timid, doubtful, and clingingly dependant; a perpetual childhood." Even in
the case of an abusive husband, women were sometimes told to stay quiet

Then as he went in the store and got some gum the lady behind the counter, Carolyn Bryant,

one young man's evolution from boyhood to maturity. The novel is about a fifteen year old boy that
gets taken under the wing of Dutch Schultz, a 1930's gangster trying to keep a hold of his
diminishing empire. As the novel unfolds, so does the rising maturity of the tough young man
introduced to us as Billy Bathgate. Billy finds himself in situations that most of us never see in our

life of youth, with it's boundless resilience and illusions of immortality." (Bemrose 58–9) "He
(Doctorow) is interested not in the abstractions of corruption, but in the simple, emotional things of
the criminal existence–what it feels like to be a gangster, what moral and psychological universe

violence. Thus, underneath the soft prose of Billy's voice, we are given glimpses of the murderous
danger of the criminal life, and how the people who live it, particularly it's leaders, keep their heads

Essay on John Patrick Shanley's Doubt: Film versus Book
Douglas Light said that our imagination is better than any answer to a question. Light distinguished
between two genres: fantasy from fiction. He described how fantasy stimulates one's imagination,
which is more appealing, but fiction can just be a relatable story and results in being less
entertaining. In the short parable Doubt, the readers are lured in to the possibility of a scandalous
relationship between a pastor and an alter boy. Their curiosity is ignited because they are not given
all the details. Therefore, their mind wanders further than the plot to create a story and characters
that acted on one's imagination; thus, the story became entertaining– flooded by the questions of
what? Who? How? By which the reader can only answer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For instance, in the play when Sister Aloysius is searching for information against Father Flynn, the
reader must decide whether she is this monster out to maintain tradition; or wanted to shield the
alter boys from any harm. That was the beauty of the play; there were no facial expressions to
decipher, no exaggerated traits, or scenes. That being the case, the readers were able to derive their
own opinion of what the ending may be through the context provided. In addition, the most
entertaining aspect of the play verses the movie, is that solely through their imagination they would
create the ending to the uncertainties presented in the play. In fact, all the details within the play
stimulated one's imagination to create something that was never stated in writing. In no part of the
play does it outright say that Father Flynn had any encounter with the alter boys other than during
basketball practice and his close friendship with Donald Muller, but through the readers
imagination, they assume these scandalous scenarios that Father Flynn is accused of. The viewer
was in constant "doubt," of both characters' intentions and motives. The parable is filled with
indirect notions, assumptions, and gossiping. So why is this specific parable so entertaining? Its
simple– the reader used their imagination to piece together a relationship that at multiple

The Human Struggle In Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story
Generations don't battle, they mostly clash into each other. We see this in our very own lives, where
parents bring up their past and say, "If only you knew how good you have it!". This will forever be
somewhat a problem in the past, present, and future of our lives. One generation will always be
underestimated or beyond correct then the other. In Yasujiro Ozu's film Tokyo Story we see constant
clashing of the elderly and the youth. Ozu's message of how the generations have changed is a way
of him defining to us what the human struggle is. Due to the character's actions in the way they treat
each other we can pick up on the struggles that they are having and see the human struggle in the
film. At the start of the film, Ozu shows us two of the main characters of the film; Shukichi and
Tomi. We see them packing their bags to go on a trip. They are going to see their children whom,
they haven't seen in a long while. We can see that Ozu is showing us that becoming old is one
struggle that most humans fear, but of course it must occur in our lives. When the old slow couple
are packing, Shukichi asks Tomi where the inflatable pillow is and Tomi responds and says that she
gave it to him. With aging comes forgetfulness and stubbornness; and when Tomi says she gave it to
him he starts to say no you didn't, you still have it. Later we see it appear in his bag where he said it
wasn't and nothing is said when he finds it. It is simply brushed away with no argument to follow.

Theme Of Dreams In A Raisin In The Sun
What happens to a dream deferred? In Lorraine Hansberry's play "A Raisin in the Sun", dreams are
often challenged and sometimes even deferred. The characters are faced with challenges that delay
them from living the life they want and achieving their dreams. Walter Younger, the father of the
family, is an envious, hopeless, and immature colored man living in Southside Chicago during the
1950s. He has multiple sub–dreams throughout the play, but his overall hope seems to be a
comfortable life for his family. Walter has not achieved his dream for a happy family because of his
actions and personality. One reason that Walter does not achieve his dream is the fact that he is
envious. For example, Walter's job as a chauffeur requires him to drive around rich, white men all
day. He recalls that when he is downtown he passes "'...them cool, quiet–looking restaurants where
them white boys are sitting back and talking 'bout things...sitting there turning deals worth millions
of dollars...sometimes I see guys that don't look much older than me'" (Hansberry 74). This shows
that he wishes he had the life of a successful businessman instead of a chauffeur. Moreover, Walter
is jealous of George Murchison, who has an interest in Walter's sister, Beneatha. He insults
Murchison by saying "'I know ain't nothing in this world as busy as you colored college boys with
your fraternity pins and white shoes'" (Hansberry 84). This implies that Walter wishes he had the life
George had, and has to

Who Is Clarence Darrow A Villain
Clarence Darrow is a person many people would consider a very important figure in our history, but
whether he is considered a hero or a villain depends more on a person's point of view. There are
many facts that Darrow can be considered as a villain because of his personal beliefs than from his
actions.
Darrow was born in Farmdale, Ohio on April 18, 1857. Darrow began teaching at a country school
in the Kinsman area for three years, but he also managed to save some time to study law. He studied
at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and he enrolled in the law department at which he
attends for one year of classes. Clarence worked in a law office located in Youngstown, Ohio. In
1879, Darrow is admitted to the bar and starts a law practice in Youngstown.
Darrow went from defending the Railroad owners to working for the American Railway Union
(ARU). Eugene V. Debs had been charged "with conspiracy to commit an unlawful act, that is – to
block the progress of the United States mails". Darrow took Debs as his case because of his great
desire to defend the people he felt had no chance of getting justice. Clarence Darrow and Eugene V.

each presents a question key to feminist theory through the lives of their singular female
protagonists: what is the effect of societal pressures on a woman finding her identity? As the titular
character Cleo in Agnes Varnas' Cleo a 5 de 7 rejects her role as an object of the public gaze, and
Noriko of Yasujiro Ozu's Late Spring grapples with her fate to play the part of a traditional Japanese
housewife, both directors explore this common concept of finding one's identity in an unkind world
through the use of such themes as routines, charades and emptiness.
Routines are a brief, but necessary element to both films; they establish their leading characters as
seeking security in repetition of societal norms, and serve to highlight the director's signature style
of camerawork in each film. For example, in reference to the title of Agnes Varda's film, Cleo
expects to receive her lover at 5 p.m., repeating a behavioral convention encouraged by French
society to meet one's lover at this time. She dons her wig and fluffy coat, lies on her bed in wait of
her attractive but patronizing lover, and plays along with his shallow display of affection when he
comes and goes–as, it is implied, she has done several times before. The practice of this routine
allows the camera to advocate the underlying issue of the scene; the height of the

The Parable Of The Sower Essay
In "The Parable of the Sower", author Octavia Butler realistically describes the dystopia of the U.S
that is currently ruled by poverty, crime, and chaos. Lauren, the main protagonist, evolves and goes
on a physical and emotional journey to create her own beliefs and prepare for life behind the wall.
Lauren lives in the community of Robledo that is guarded by a wall that is meant to protect them
from crime although it often fails to do so. Being the daughter of a Baptist, Lauren is challenged to
conform and participate in the religious passivity of the community. Not having enough water, food,
and safety prevents and angers Lauren to try to address her problematic reality immediately.
Through the eyes and actions of Lauren it is clear she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lauren had suggested the idea to her father but he dismissed it, she states "I didn't push the idea as I
should have". (Butler pg.157) Lauren is capable and smart to help her community; however, she
often quits and resigns to the power and influence of the community. She has the passion and tools
to make a difference in her community but she foolishly desists. Regardless of her bright ideas
Lauren often second guesses and undermines herself making her a hopeless quitter. Nevertheless,
Lauren is also an admirable brave character who recognizes there is a problem and fearlessly
decides to address it. Lauren confidently decides to share her ideas to her friend Joanne after she
drew conclusions from her father's books. Wishing to help the community Lauren risked a negative
reaction from Joanne and disapproval of her father. Lauren bravely tries to explain and convince
Joanne that they must take action she says, "We can stop denying reality or hoping it will go away
by magic." (Butler pg. 58) She shows her frustration on the dismay of the community that ignores
and denies the problems present. Lauren understands that thief's will continue to take away their
resources and in the process, kill those who get in the way. Lauren strongly wishes that her
community would take upon themselves to help each other she states, "Nothing is going to save us.
If we don't save ourselves, we're dead." (Butler pg.

Richard Wright, Black Boy this is a quote from the famous Richard Wright an African American
author. This quote means that no matter what was placed in his way or what he lacked that others
had he hung on to what he had and did what he could. And the more he read about the world, the
more he longed to see it and make a permanent break from the Jim Crow South. "I want my life to

a difference he did make. Richard Wright was an important figure in American History because he

"I want my life to count for something," he told a friend. This shows us that Wright was motivated
not only by his longing to leave the racism and crap that he had to deal with in the south. But he also
wanted to make it better so that other black folk didn't have to go through the same thing. He had a
true desire to change they way society acted and it takes a true man to set of in this journey. But this
is also the reason Wright wrote, so that other people could see how his kind fair and that they really
are just the same as the white people. his first book was a book called black boy. Wright continued
to plow through books and write. He later joined the Federal Writers' Project, and in 1937, with
dreams of making it as a writer, he moved to New York City,A year after, Wright published Uncle
Tom's Children, a collection of four stories. The book proved to be a significant turning point in his
career. The stories earned him a $500 prize from Story magazine.
Some of the significant accomplishments of Richard Wright is simply that he is one of America's
greatest black writers, Richard Wright was also among the first African American writers to achieve
literary fame and fortune. Not only that but his reputation has less to do with the color of his skin
than with the superb quality of his work. That and he gained respect from many people in America.

Complete Comparisons Of Wheatley And Poe
Complete Comparisons of Wheatley and Poe Throughout American literature, two poets emerge as
very unlikely candidates for poetic comparisons. Phillis Wheatley and Edgar Alan Poe's writings in
many ways reflect the unique lives that they lived, and having an understanding of the two poets'
backgrounds can assist a reader in dissecting their manuscripts. Comparing works from the two is an
easy task to handle if an avid reader decides to pursue it, and even though they lived under adverse
conditions they have a way of shaping history into an intricate fashion of delicate, dark and
sophisticated writing. Phillis Wheatley and Edgar Alan Poe are different in persona and literacy, but
when a reader processes more of their works, one can understand how these two writers helped
shape poetry for generations after and still possess an impact on the literary world.
Phillis Wheatley was a young African American girl, brought to America at the age of seven to be a
slave. In her time maturing in the Wheatley household, young Phillis grew rapidly intellectually and
spiritually. Her faith in God and His divine nature is what inspired Wheatley to write– a prominent
subject in her poem "On Being Brought from Africa to America." Another example of God being
the backbone of her literary career is in her letter "To the University of Cambridge in New
England." Though Wheatley was a slave, she is known as one of the most prominent poets in the
pre–nineteenth century America. Mr. Edgar Alan Poe,

Analysis Of ' Ask Me If I Care ' And ' Safari ' Essay
Women have a few common tropes in literature. Seen as submissive to men, and sexualized because
of it, women are presented as less–than. While this has been strayed from a little bit in modern
literature with the engagement of queer writers, it is still very much the normal view of women, due
to a society in which the view on women is that of being less–than. The short stories "Ask Me if I
Care" and "Safari" by Jennifer Egan both perpetuate this idea of women as submissive. Egan
presents female characters who only exist in the context of men, thus leaving them to be seen as
inferior to the men. These tropes of women in literature, and Egan's use of them, fit into the larger
conversation: there is a degradation of women in literature due to common conceptions of women in
society.
Egan presents multiple female characters in "Ask Me if I Care". The short story touches on a group
of friends, and in this group are the two characters of Rhea and Jocelyn–both female. While they
may seem to be presented differently, Rhea as a not–interested–in–being–sexualized character and
Jocelyn as a sexualizes–herself character, both ultimately play into the trope of submissive and
degraded women. Rhea, from the beginning, is portrayed as needing men: "Still, if it's Bennie and
me I hope for the back, so that I can push against his shoulder in the cold, and hold him for a second
when we hit a bump" (Egan, "Ask Me"). While this may seem innocuous, it is the first introduction
to Rhea. The very

Importance Of Perseverance
Perseverance leads to success through ambition and endurance. Two great examples of people who
persevered in life are Ruth and Joni Eareckson Tada. Ruth, a godly woman, faced many difficulties,
but achieved her goal and God's favor with the help of perseverance. Joni Eareckson Tada used
perseverance to overcome the many obstacles she faced after suffering a tragic accident that left her
paralyzed. Both these women could have given up and walked away from the situations they faced,
but they decided to persevere, leading to triumph.
Everybody faces obstacles in life, whether they be small or big. How people react to the obstacles
placed in their lives is what builds people's character. This is where perseverance plays a key role
with the help of endurance and ambition. Perseverance is the ability to overcome obstacles even
when you feel failure is inevitable. It is running an extra mile when exhausted or staying up late in
order to finish a paper. Perseverance is the ability to overcome emotional, physical, and even
financial failure. It is never giving up even though "the going gets tough."
Joni Eareckson Tada was an ordinary girl, enjoying life, until one day her life was completely
changed. Joni suffered a tragic acident. She dived into a swimming pool and shattered her neck.
Chang 2
This accident left her in a wheelchair as a quadraplegic. Joni beautifully explained how it felt being
in a wheelchair when she said, "In a way, I wish I could take to heaven my old, tattered Everest and
Jennings wheelchair. I would point to the empty seat and say, 'Lord, for decades I was paralyzed in
this chair. But it showed me how paralyzed You must have felt to be nailed to Your Cross. My
limitations taught me something about the limitations You endured when You laid aside your robes
of state and put on the indignity of human flesh.' At that point, with my strong and glorified body, I
might sit in it, rub the armrests with my hands, look up at Jesus, and add, 'The weaker I felt in this
chair, the harder I leaned on You. And the harder I leaned, the more I discovered how strong You
are. Thank you, Jesus for learning obedience in your suffering...You gave me

Emmett Till, a name you might not remember, but a face you'll never forget. He was just fourteen
years old when he was kidnapped and beaten beyond recognition by two white males . This was
supposedly due to his "harsh" behavior towards a woman working at a shop named Carol Bryant.
Although there is no actual proof of what really went down inside the store, however, whatever it
was couldn't possible justify the beating Till faced (biography). Till had recently went down south to
Money, Mississippi to visit some of his family, including Moses Wright who testified and was a
witness in this case. Since Till was from the north he hadn't know how segregated the south still

Bryant and Milam had done an interview only a few months after the trial, in January of 1956, with
Look magazine, for $4,000. In this interview they had confessed to the entire murder and exactly
what and how they did it. However, since both men were protected by double jeopardy laws, they
could not get tried again (Biography 4). Another spark in the case had occurred just recently in a
book called, The Blood of Emmett Till by Timothy Tyson. In this book he had interview the very
same woman who had started this entire case, Mrs. Bryant. When asked about her testimony, she
had said, "That part's not true," when talking about the supposed verbal and physical advances Till
made towards her. She had also stated that, "Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened
to him." (Weller 5). Till's case had opened many eyes on how awful Jim Crow Laws were in the
south. This case had shown, not only how racist most of the people still were in the south, but how
unfair the trials were. A similar case, which had taken place in the exact same courtroom as Till's
case had the same exact outcome. A white man shot and killed a black attendant at a gas station and
was found not guilty. These cases were so unfair that twenty–one percent of all blacks Tallahatchie

Georges Perec's Things: A Story Of The Sixties
Things: A Story of the Sixties by Georges Perec (1965) explores consumerism through the lives of a
young couple, Sylvie and Jerome. The novel looks at their growth, from college students to part–
time surveyors to faceless employees, always looking for fulfillment via the newest trend. Whether
it is an abundance of vases, or living in Tunisia, Perec shows how influential the language of
advertising truly is. To feel like their life has meaning, Sylvie and Jerome spend money and energy
on intrinsically useless items. They work towards goals that society has given weight to solely so
they can achieve an illusion of worth. In the Society of the Spectacle (1967), Guy Debord discusses

It is revealed that their disappointment stems from the fact the film was not "the film they would
have liked to make. Or more secretly, no doubt, the film they would have liked to live" (Perec). The
American comedy was taking over cinema during the 60s. Comedies contain low–stakes and happy
endings. While they may entertain, they may not hit emotional points to the point of resolution. The
idea of creating their own film is the first creative desire assigned to Sylvie and Jerome thus far in
the novel. Every other part of their identity had been about accumulating medals to receive extrinsic
praise for their lavish lifestyle. Creating art, specifically to their own tastes, however, is completely
indulgent. Expression is a sentimentally valuable act, separate from the minutia of materialistic
living. Minimalism as an art form rose to prominence during the 50s–its focus was to eliminate the
boundaries between art and object. Anything could be art, down to the space in which the pieces
were displayed. This idea progressed into the sixties with "happenings", where living became
performance. Art was no longer about exhibition; it was a way of life. Debord referenced the idea of
happenings by addressing the "modern movement of decomposition of all art, its formal
annihilation" (Debord 187). Art was dead, no longer was what it had been historically, no longer
about museums and showings; it was

The Role Of Women In Raisin In The Sun And Trifles
Men and women are constantly debating what their true role in life is. In a family, the women were
expected to do the laundry, cook, and clean, while the men went to work and made money for their
family. This idea has changed drastically over the years. Women are now able to get an education
and work if they'd like. Sixty years ago, this would not have been possible. Most men and women
now share the housework, and both have full–time jobs. In Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
and Trifles by Susan Glaspell the women struggle with being unheard by their husbands. In Raisin
in the Sun, Ruth Younger struggles with her husband, Walter Lee, when he does not listen to her
when they discuss their money problems. Walter strives to have more money, so he can provide his
family with nice things. He is tired of being overlooked by the white men that he works for and
wants to be more like them. Walter hates the job that he has because he must obey a white man. He
constantly feels like the women in his life do not listen to his struggles and confides in alcohol
instead of speaking with his family about his emotions. Walter Lee constantly belittles his wife
saying, "that just goes to show you what women understand about the world...nothing will happen
for you in this world 'less you pay somebody off!" (Hansberry 81). Again, the women's opinions and
thoughts are overlooked by the men in the play. In the end, Walter Lee chooses to do the right thing
and becomes the hero. When

Wayne Williams Thesis Statement
Wayne Williams was born on May 27th, 1958 to Homer and Faye Williams of Atlanta, Georgia. He
graduated from Douglass High School and furthered his education at Georgia State University, but
later dropped out to explore a new talent. Williams took a specific interest in music, pursuing a
career in radio and managing a band. Williams' educational background and career both were
pivotal to his defense. In 1979, children and teens seemed to simple vanish. Each child met certain
criteria: young, black, and from Atlanta. The first two victims, Edward Smith and Alfred Evans,
who were both 14 years old, disappeared four days apart in June. Both of their bodies were found
close together in a remote, wooded area of South Atlanta one month later. Nine–year–old Yusuf Bell
went missing on October 21st, 1979 and his body was recovered November 8th of the same year.
Police did not connect the dots with Bell's murder because he was fully clothed, found in a remote
area, but was strangled to death, unlike Smith and Evans, who were shot with a .22 caliber.
Williams' next alleged victim, 12–year–old Angel Lenair, was also strangled. She was found in an

more evidence and convicted of more than just two murders? I am unsure if Wayne Williams

Analysis Of The Text ' Lady Audley 's Secret '
Explication Essay
In the text "Lady Audley's secret (1862)", written by M. E. Braddon, there are many literary devices
that came together to create a unique experience for the reader. The sentences in this text are
purposely disconnected into eight lines. When reading a text that has sentences that are connected
and flow fluently, it can be heard to determine key ideas. The text breaks up sentences so that key
ideas are easily highlighted and specific words are emphasized. Within the eight lines, the author
uses a unique sequence of events. The author begins the text by mentioning Talboys, and what he
had done to Lady Audley. However, the author refrains from immediately saying who Talboys was
in relation to her. Next the author explained, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this line of the text the author also uses the word "thud". The word thud is an onomatopoeia,
meaning it is spelled the way it sounds as its action is taking place. This enhanced the ability to
imagine the sound of the fall. Another instance where imagery is used is when the author uses
detailed adjectives to illustrate the size and appearance of the well.
Throughout the text the author uses the "mouth of the well" and the "cry" of Talboys as defining
aspects of his death. Both are presented in multiple places in the text. Braddon used the mouth of the
well in the fifth line when Audley initially attacked Talboys and in the eighth line when Talboys was
confirmed to be dead. The cry of Talboys was used in the fifth and the seventh lines of the text. Both
the mouth of the well and the cry mark the beginning of Talboys attack and the confirmation of his
death. The one cry by Talboys also confirmed that his death happened instantly.
Characterization plays a major role in the impact of the text. The main character Audley is depicted
as an evil woman who killed her first husband without remorse and who threatens her new husband.
Audley threatens her husband by explaining to him what she has done to ex–husband, who
happened the treated her as he is now treating her. In other words she implied that he can possibly
end up like her ex–husband, if he does not change the way he

Emmett Till Thesis
Emmett Till was an African–American 14 year old who got murdered in Mississippi after speaking
with a white woman. He was from Chicago, the North of America where mixing of the races was

Since Emmett was from the North, he was unaware of the law and was not impressed by it. After his
Cousin Jones had seen Till's class photograph, Till had stated that the white children were his

This is seen in his financial commitments to improve the lives of African–Americans, of children in
need, of those with health concerns, and of those with artistic dreams. Consequently, his financial
contributions to The Jackie Robinson Foundation, Children in Need, Stand up to Cancer, Special
Olympics, and MusiCares proves not only that he knows what it feels like to need support but also
that his definition of charity includes putting his money where his thoughts are. Almost all of the
proof that he has dedicated a huge amount of money towards these charities is how they treat him in
return. All of these charities and foundations have given him an award for what he has done for w

The General Function Of A Female Slave
A slave was then basically anyone who was not white, but color was forced to have a master in
which all of the commands that came out of their mouths definitely would have to be done by a
slave. Many times they were treated badly and none of the slaves had a say in anything that they
would do. Slaves had no rights at all and they were considered basically nothing or a piece of
property; a property in which masters could share and buy slaves for themselves. White people who
could afford to buy a slave would. Slaves were mainly used for manual labor. The general function
of a female slave was mainly to do chores, while men, on the other hand grew crops and worked in
many other different things that involved a "men's job".
As a young girl who became a slave Biddy Mason can certainly relate to the definition of slave. At a
young age for a long time Biddy was considered as a Black slave woman who was illiterate. In other
words she could not read or write. She worked as a nurse and a midwife and traveled from
Mississippi to California to be able to become a successful businesswoman and a generous
contributor to social causes. Bridgett "Biddy" Mason was born a slave, August 15, 1818. No one
knows the location in which she was born in, but many people predict that she was born in Georgia,
while others predict more likely she may have been born in Mississippi. Biddy was given the name
"Bridget" without a last name. Since Bitty was a slave at the time she was given to Robert

Analysis Of Lou Kline In A Visit From The Goon Squad
In a novel that jumps between periods of time and interchanges multiple characters, Lou Kline is
one of the only consistent elements throughout the entirety of A Visit From the Goon Squad by
Jennifer Egan. Lou is first portrayed hostily as a abhorrent, egocentric man who fears growing older.
In the next chapter, the reader's perception of Lou is altered from a sleazy man to a more paternal
figure, and the reader understands that while Lou has done despicable things, he is not completely
immoral. Altered again, the final image of Lou is that of pity – as a dying man, his failures are
recounted and he is therefore at his most vulnerable. Egan's non–linear structure of the novel allows
the reader to see multiple sides of Lou Kline through different character perspectives, and in the end
amplify the merciless effect time has on a destructive urge to remain youthful and assert dominance
to "win" at everything. Lou's youth is characterized by in–the–moment actions, an abundance of
girls, and reckless living. Afraid of aging, he spends his whole life in this state of mind. Even on his
deathbed he invites Rhea and Jocelyn, young girls from his past, to visit him in order to experience a
final youthful atmosphere. The narrator, Rhea, describes Lou as having a "surfer's face," connoting
perceived inward youth while people looking at him would see his face had "gone a little draggy
under the eyes" (Egan 60). He shows many signs of childishness and carelessness when he
"ignore[s] the rule to stay seated while the jeep is moving" and again when he sees lions and
proceeds to climb out of his seat with the others and they "jam their upper upper halves through the
open roof" (Egan 66). This carelessness shows a lack of a sense of responsibility as not only an
adult but also a father, as evidenced in his lack of care for Rolph's true personality and his passive
aggressive attitude to Charlie as she defies him. When Charlie giggles and Lou asks her what's so
funny, he mocks her answer: "'Life!' Lou snorts. 'How old are you?'" Ironically this response is so
childish that it makes the reader question the mental age of Lou himself. While Lou does show a
more maternal side in this chapter, it is overtaken by his

How Did Emmett Till Influence The Civil Rights Movement

  • 1. How Did Emmett Till Influence The Civil Rights Movement "He only whistled. But the woman he whistled at was white. He was black. A few days later, her angry husband roused him from bed, told him to hurry up and dress. Three days later, his terribly battered body surfaced in the muddy Tallahatchie River where it straightens out for a stretch through the cotton–rich flatlands of the delta. His name was Emmett Till. He was 14 years old." (Jallon, 1985) Over 60 years ago, the murder of Emmett Till shaped the course of human history significantly. News of his death sparked outrage worldwide, and served as the catalyst for the emerging American Civil Rights Movement. Now of course, the first things that come to mind when the Civil Rights Movement is mentioned are people such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. However, I firmly believe that another name should join that list. Mamie Till–Bradley, Emmett's mother, worked tirelessly to ensure that his death would not be in vain, and his name would never be forgotten. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She did this by becoming a civil rights activist – delivering moving speeches to large crowds across the nation on the topic of racial inequality and advocating for children in poor neighbourhoods. It's also important to note that her actions inspired more than just the general public. One such person was Rosa Parks. Parks herself told Mamie Till that it was the image of Emmett's disfigured face in the casket that was on her mind when she refused to give up her seat on the bus, a hundred days after Till's death. Rosa Parks would later be cited as one of Martin Luther King's inspirations for taking on the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which many consider to be the official start of the Civil Rights Movement. In a way, I suppose Mamie Till's passion to spread the word about what had happened to her son had created a ripple of change, which is why I think she is so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Carolyn was very angr, so she expressed what happened to her husband. Roy bryant, Carolynes husband then went and got his brother in law, J.W. Milam. Early in the morning hours, they kidnapped Emmett. They then took him to the river, gouged out his eyes, tied him to a cotton gin fan, shot him twice, and threw his body in the river. • 3. Themes In A Visit From The Goon Squad It is said that a man can never walk into the same river twice, not because the river is changing– that after all is inevitable–but because the man will never be the same man as he once was. Time, like a river flows in a set direction and once past no amount of nostalgia is capable of reversing its course. Just as it is impossible to reverse the passage of time, it is impossible to retain a past identity. Jennifer Egan's novel, a Visit from the Goon Squad, is a collection of short stories that each have a distinct voice and style. Although each chapter can stand alone, they are bound together by thematic elements and a complex web of relationships centered around Bennie Salazar a music executive and his assistant Sasha. In this passage Egan's fifth narrator, Jocelyn, a recovering drug addict and a childhood friend of Bennie Salazar, returns to the Los Angeles home of her teenage love interest, Lou,a man old enough to be her father who drove her into adapting the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle. With Lou on his deathbed, the now forty–three year old Jocelyn reunites with Rhea, another high school friend, and ponders the impact that time has had on their lives. This passage suggests the destructiveness of time on characters and relationships. Using setting, word choice, and personification Egan presents time as truly being a goon. To start, Egan employs setting to reveal the separation time has created between characters and the characters and their former ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Michael Jackson Sang The Famous Line, If You Wan Na Make... If humanity takes the time to sit down and internalize, one of the questions coming to mind has to do with why is it often afraid of change? Change is in fact a big theme in the 1987 hit song "The Man in the Mirror " (Appendix E), where the late artist Michael Jackson sang the famous line, "If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change." Fast forward to a modern–day 2016 filled with political unrest, poverty, and waning human rights, Michael Jackson's message of self–reflection eventually translating into social change finds its relevancy today, despite the song 's thirty–years–old tenure. It introduces the notion that all individuals in society are essentially human, even in spite of humanity 's tendency to demonize other belief systems. Even Saint Mother Theresa agreed with this point, once saying that "if we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other." The only way to reconcile the fact that differences don't corrupt our humanity is in society's willingness to be flexible to different points of view and recognize the structures of prejudice in a modern context. What then is the harm in paring away our egos to realize that we all have something to bring to the table? Forms of art that even attempt to evoke this message of solidarity include poetry, which in itself is a free medium that poets utilize to express their thoughts and emotions. Langston Hughes, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Maya Angelou, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Importance of Early American Women Writers Essay What could be said to early American women's writers except, thank you? The first American women's writers opened doors and laid the foundation for future women's writers and readers. Today's women raise children, supervise households, and work outside the home with every modern convenience available, and as you would expect do not find the time to write, except for a grocery list. Early American women raised children and supervised households without the modern conveniences of today and in some way made time to write the first poetry of the "New World." Bradstreet addressed her husband, children, God, and community in her poems. Her maternal instinct and dedication were present in her writing. In the poem, "The Author to Her Book," Bradstreet compares the poem itself to a child, her child: Thou ill–formed offspring of my feeble brain, Who after birth did'st by my side remain, Till snatched from thence by friends, less wise than true, Who thee abroad, exposed to public view, Made thee in rags, halting to th' press to trudge, These errors were not lessened (all may judge). These are times of rebellion, disagreement, strong emotion, psychological changes and sexual experimentation just to name a few. In Mary Gaitskill's short story "Tiny, Smiling Daddy", the main theme "of how people seek intimacy but don't know how to achieve it" (Gaitskill, 289) is conveyed by the author through the characters, symbolism and setting and imagery. Firstly, the two main characters in this story, Kitty and Stew, are crucial elements of the story to present its theme. When Kitty was a child, her and Stew were intimate. She would laugh at her father's jokes about playing with the hairs of his nose. (Gaitskill, 290) This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then, there is the relationship Stew had with his own father which can be viewed as a symbol that reflects on the relationship between Stew and Kitty. Stew admired his father, yet he rejected him: "Its almost godlike stillness and expressionless filled him with admiration and reassurance, until one day, his father slowly looked up from his cereal, met his eyes and said, ‘Stop staring at me you little shit.'"(Gaitskill, 298) Kitty herself experienced similar from Stew himself: "And if you ever try to come back here I'm going to spit ... He didn't care, he could heal cuts, you can't heal a corpse, however, and so he just kept on running. His legs hurt like they had a fire in them, burning him from the inside out, but he couldn't feel it as the drumming in his head and the pounding of a chase was all he could hear. He leaped over a fallen tree, careful of the precious bundle in his arms. He could hear the shouts and gunfire of the pistols close behind. He knew it was life or death. A bullet soared by grazing his shoulder. He clenched in agony, but could not stop. Everything was a blur, he came up to the edge of the light, seeing his death behind him and their short lived lives in their minds. He took one last look at her beautiful face, and jumped into the gorge, praying for them to have a quick death. Adam stood there in pure darkness, and as he stood there not seeing, feeling, or hearing. He had only the sense of knowing, almost like he was in a dream. He could not see anything but black and little specks of royal blue and faded ivory. As his senses failed him, however, he could tell that he was not in a room, he was aware of where he wasn't. • 11. What Is The Theme Of The Morgue Scene In Thérèse Raquin, Émile Zola uses specific scenes in order to convey and communicate explicit concepts from which the reader can extrapolate key themes in the novel, and the Morgue scene of Chapter XIII is an excellent example of this. Such scenes also offer a comprehensive depiction of the times and the Morgue scene gives us a slice of Parisian life during the 19th century. Across the span of this chapter, Zola's unflinching depiction of the morgue, the bodies lying on the slabs, and most importantly, his meticulous illustration of those who visit the morgue for titillation or other reasons, impose profound connotations of Parisian society in that period. One of the reasons for such a realistically lifelike extract was Zola's deliberate effort ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zola regarded Manet as one of the "masters of the future" and defended him against harsh critics, as he strongly believed in the way Manet expressed himself in his paintings. Manet's "Olympia", in particular, generated intense scandal due to its sexual connotations and many disapproved of the painting. However, Manet's talent motivated Zola to include crude sexuality and painterly technique in his writing. In truth, the theme of sexuality permeates the entire novel, even in the Morgue scene; Zola's portrayal of the coarse primitiveness of human nature is again evident when the "gangs of kids" come in "stopping only by women's bodies" to "stare impudently at the naked breasts". This is a perversely disturbing spectacle for youngsters to see, but Zola approaches it matter–of–factly, commenting without irony that "It is in the Morgue that young street urchins have their first mistress". This graphic image of the exposed breasts creates an abhorrent atmosphere for the reader, signifying an objectification of women during that time as this piece of writing can be seen as patriarchal novel. Zola furthers this impression by describing the Morgue as "a show that anyone can afford, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Writers on religion tended to treat piety as a medicine for the wants of women, teaching them it was better to pray than to think. Purity was no less important than piety. Women were warned men would try to steal their purity, but they must be strong and resist the temptation. Thomas Branagan threatened women a horrible fate if they did not remain pure in the 1808 publication, The Excellency of the Female Character Vindicated, "You will be left in silent sadness to bewail your credulity, imbecility, duplicity, and premature prostitution" (Welter 103). Women of the Nineteenth Century were taught to believe the contradiction that purity before marriage brought happiness, until it was time to be married and all innocence is lost. Without proper preparation to deal with the moral dilemma women were expected to deal with this severe change in their lives without questions (Welter 104). The next requirement for being a "true woman" was submissiveness. According to society men were superior to women by "God's appointment." If they acted otherwise they "tampered with the order of the Universe" (Welter 105). A "true woman" would not question this idea because she already understands her place. Light distinguished between two genres: fantasy from fiction. He described how fantasy stimulates one's imagination, which is more appealing, but fiction can just be a relatable story and results in being less entertaining. In the short parable Doubt, the readers are lured in to the possibility of a scandalous relationship between a pastor and an alter boy. Their curiosity is ignited because they are not given all the details. Therefore, their mind wanders further than the plot to create a story and characters that acted on one's imagination; thus, the story became entertaining– flooded by the questions of what? Who? How? By which the reader can only answer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That being the case, the readers were able to derive their own opinion of what the ending may be through the context provided. In Yasujiro Ozu's film Tokyo Story we see constant clashing of the elderly and the youth. Ozu's message of how the generations have changed is a way of him defining to us what the human struggle is. Due to the character's actions in the way they treat each other we can pick up on the struggles that they are having and see the human struggle in the film. Walter Younger, the father of the family, is an envious, hopeless, and immature colored man living in Southside Chicago during the 1950s. He has multiple sub–dreams throughout the play, but his overall hope seems to be a comfortable life for his family. Walter has not achieved his dream for a happy family because of his actions and personality. One reason that Walter does not achieve his dream is the fact that he is envious. For example, Walter's job as a chauffeur requires him to drive around rich, white men all day. He recalls that when he is downtown he passes "'...them cool, quiet–looking restaurants where them white boys are sitting back and talking 'bout things...sitting there turning deals worth millions of dollars...sometimes I see guys that don't look much older than me'" (Hansberry 74). This shows that he wishes he had the life of a successful businessman instead of a chauffeur. Moreover, Walter is jealous of George Murchison, who has an interest in Walter's sister, Beneatha. Varda And Ozu Analysis Society and Self–Service: Key Thoughts of Varda and Ozu A sound comparison one could make between Agnes Varda's and Yasujiro Ozu's masterpieces is that each presents a question key to feminist theory through the lives of their singular female protagonists: what is the effect of societal pressures on a woman finding her identity? As the titular character Cleo in Agnes Varnas' Cleo a 5 de 7 rejects her role as an object of the public gaze, and Noriko of Yasujiro Ozu's Late Spring grapples with her fate to play the part of a traditional Japanese housewife, both directors explore this common concept of finding one's identity in an unkind world through the use of such themes as routines, charades and emptiness. Routines are a brief, but necessary element to both films; they establish their leading characters as seeking security in repetition of societal norms, and serve to highlight the director's signature style of camerawork in each film. For example, in reference to the title of Agnes Varda's film, Cleo expects to receive her lover at 5 p.m., repeating a behavioral convention encouraged by French society to meet one's lover at this time. She dons her wig and fluffy coat, lies on her bed in wait of her attractive but patronizing lover, and plays along with his shallow display of affection when he comes and goes–as, it is implied, she has done several times before. Phillis Wheatley and Edgar Alan Poe's writings in many ways reflect the unique lives that they lived, and having an understanding of the two poets' backgrounds can assist a reader in dissecting their manuscripts. Comparing works from the two is an easy task to handle if an avid reader decides to pursue it, and even though they lived under adverse conditions they have a way of shaping history into an intricate fashion of delicate, dark and sophisticated writing. Phillis Wheatley and Edgar Alan Poe are different in persona and literacy, but when a reader processes more of their works, one can understand how these two writers helped shape poetry for generations after and still possess an impact on the literary world. Phillis Wheatley was a young African American girl, brought to America at the age of seven to be a slave. In her time maturing in the Wheatley household, young Phillis grew rapidly intellectually and spiritually. Her faith in God and His divine nature is what inspired Wheatley to write– a prominent subject in her poem "On Being Brought from Africa to America." • 25. Analysis Of ' Ask Me If I Care ' And ' Safari ' Essay Women have a few common tropes in literature. Seen as submissive to men, and sexualized because of it, women are presented as less–than. While this has been strayed from a little bit in modern literature with the engagement of queer writers, it is still very much the normal view of women, due to a society in which the view on women is that of being less–than. The short stories "Ask Me if I Care" and "Safari" by Jennifer Egan both perpetuate this idea of women as submissive. Egan presents female characters who only exist in the context of men, thus leaving them to be seen as inferior to the men. These tropes of women in literature, and Egan's use of them, fit into the larger conversation: there is a degradation of women in literature due to common conceptions of women in society. Egan presents multiple female characters in "Ask Me if I Care". The short story touches on a group of friends, and in this group are the two characters of Rhea and Jocelyn–both female. While they may seem to be presented differently, Rhea as a not–interested–in–being–sexualized character and Jocelyn as a sexualizes–herself character, both ultimately play into the trope of submissive and degraded women. Rhea, from the beginning, is portrayed as needing men: "Still, if it's Bennie and me I hope for the back, so that I can push against his shoulder in the cold, and hold him for a second when we hit a bump" (Egan, "Ask Me"). • 28. Importance Of Perseverance Perseverance leads to success through ambition and endurance. Two great examples of people who persevered in life are Ruth and Joni Eareckson Tada. Ruth, a godly woman, faced many difficulties, but achieved her goal and God's favor with the help of perseverance. Joni Eareckson Tada used perseverance to overcome the many obstacles she faced after suffering a tragic accident that left her paralyzed. Both these women could have given up and walked away from the situations they faced, but they decided to persevere, leading to triumph. Everybody faces obstacles in life, whether they be small or big. How people react to the obstacles placed in their lives is what builds people's character. This is where perseverance plays a key role with the help of endurance and ambition. Perseverance is the ability to overcome obstacles even when you feel failure is inevitable. It is running an extra mile when exhausted or staying up late in order to finish a paper. Perseverance is the ability to overcome emotional, physical, and even financial failure. It is never giving up even though "the going gets tough." Joni Eareckson Tada was an ordinary girl, enjoying life, until one day her life was completely changed. Joni suffered a tragic acident. She dived into a swimming pool and shattered her neck. Chang 2 This accident left her in a wheelchair as a quadraplegic. Joni beautifully explained how it felt being in a wheelchair when she said, "In a way, I wish I could take to heaven my old, tattered Everest and Jennings wheelchair. I would point to the empty seat and say, 'Lord, for decades I was paralyzed in this chair. But it showed me how paralyzed You must have felt to be nailed to Your Cross. My limitations taught me something about the limitations You endured when You laid aside your robes of state and put on the indignity of human flesh.' At that point, with my strong and glorified body, I might sit in it, rub the armrests with my hands, look up at Jesus, and add, 'The weaker I felt in this chair, the harder I leaned on You. And the harder I leaned, the more I discovered how strong You are. Thank you, Jesus for learning obedience in your suffering...You gave me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Emmett Till Research Paper Emmett Till, a name you might not remember, but a face you'll never forget. He was just fourteen years old when he was kidnapped and beaten beyond recognition by two white males . This was supposedly due to his "harsh" behavior towards a woman working at a shop named Carol Bryant. Although there is no actual proof of what really went down inside the store, however, whatever it was couldn't possible justify the beating Till faced (biography). Till had recently went down south to Money, Mississippi to visit some of his family, including Moses Wright who testified and was a witness in this case. Since Till was from the north he hadn't know how segregated the south still was. With the Jim Crow Laws intact, he had no idea that talking to a white ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bryant and Milam had done an interview only a few months after the trial, in January of 1956, with Look magazine, for $4,000. In this interview they had confessed to the entire murder and exactly what and how they did it. However, since both men were protected by double jeopardy laws, they could not get tried again (Biography 4). Another spark in the case had occurred just recently in a book called, The Blood of Emmett Till by Timothy Tyson. In this book he had interview the very same woman who had started this entire case, Mrs. Bryant. When asked about her testimony, she had said, "That part's not true," when talking about the supposed verbal and physical advances Till made towards her. She had also stated that, "Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him." (Weller 5). Till's case had opened many eyes on how awful Jim Crow Laws were in the south. This case had shown, not only how racist most of the people still were in the south, but how unfair the trials were. A similar case, which had taken place in the exact same courtroom as Till's case had the same exact outcome. A white man shot and killed a black attendant at a gas station and was found not guilty. The novel looks at their growth, from college students to part– time surveyors to faceless employees, always looking for fulfillment via the newest trend. Whether it is an abundance of vases, or living in Tunisia, Perec shows how influential the language of advertising truly is. To feel like their life has meaning, Sylvie and Jerome spend money and energy on intrinsically useless items. It is revealed that their disappointment stems from the fact the film was not "the film they would have liked to make. Or more secretly, no doubt, the film they would have liked to live" (Perec). The American comedy was taking over cinema during the 60s. Comedies contain low–stakes and happy endings. While they may entertain, they may not hit emotional points to the point of resolution. The idea of creating their own film is the first creative desire assigned to Sylvie and Jerome thus far in the novel. Every other part of their identity had been about accumulating medals to receive extrinsic praise for their lavish lifestyle. Creating art, specifically to their own tastes, however, is completely indulgent. Expression is a sentimentally valuable act, separate from the minutia of materialistic living. Minimalism as an art form rose to prominence during the 50s–its focus was to eliminate the boundaries between art and object. Anything could be art, down to the space in which the pieces were displayed. This idea progressed into the sixties with "happenings", where living became performance. Art was no longer about exhibition; it was a way of life. Debord referenced the idea of happenings by addressing the "modern movement of decomposition of all art, its formal annihilation" (Debord 187). • 34. The Role Of Women In Raisin In The Sun And Trifles Men and women are constantly debating what their true role in life is. In a family, the women were expected to do the laundry, cook, and clean, while the men went to work and made money for their family. This idea has changed drastically over the years. Women are now able to get an education and work if they'd like. Sixty years ago, this would not have been possible. Most men and women now share the housework, and both have full–time jobs. In Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Trifles by Susan Glaspell the women struggle with being unheard by their husbands. In Raisin in the Sun, Ruth Younger struggles with her husband, Walter Lee, when he does not listen to her when they discuss their money problems. Walter strives to have more money, so he can provide his family with nice things. He is tired of being overlooked by the white men that he works for and wants to be more like them. Walter hates the job that he has because he must obey a white man. He constantly feels like the women in his life do not listen to his struggles and confides in alcohol instead of speaking with his family about his emotions. Walter Lee constantly belittles his wife saying, "that just goes to show you what women understand about the world...nothing will happen for you in this world 'less you pay somebody off!" (Hansberry 81). Again, the women's opinions and thoughts are overlooked by the men in the play. In the end, Walter Lee chooses to do the right thing and becomes the hero. When ... • 35. Wayne Williams Thesis Statement Wayne Williams was born on May 27th, 1958 to Homer and Faye Williams of Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Douglass High School and furthered his education at Georgia State University, but later dropped out to explore a new talent. Williams took a specific interest in music, pursuing a career in radio and managing a band. Williams' educational background and career both were pivotal to his defense. In 1979, children and teens seemed to simple vanish. Each child met certain criteria: young, black, and from Atlanta. The first two victims, Edward Smith and Alfred Evans, who were both 14 years old, disappeared four days apart in June. Both of their bodies were found close together in a remote, wooded area of South Atlanta one month later. Nine–year–old Yusuf Bell went missing on October 21st, 1979 and his body was recovered November 8th of the same year. Police did not connect the dots with Bell's murder because he was fully clothed, found in a remote area, but was strangled to death, unlike Smith and Evans, who were shot with a .22 caliber. • 36. Analysis Of The Text ' Lady Audley 's Secret ' Explication Essay In the text "Lady Audley's secret (1862)", written by M. E. Braddon, there are many literary devices that came together to create a unique experience for the reader. The sentences in this text are purposely disconnected into eight lines. When reading a text that has sentences that are connected and flow fluently, it can be heard to determine key ideas. The text breaks up sentences so that key ideas are easily highlighted and specific words are emphasized. Within the eight lines, the author uses a unique sequence of events. The author begins the text by mentioning Talboys, and what he had done to Lady Audley. However, the author refrains from immediately saying who Talboys was in relation to her. Next the author explained, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this line of the text the author also uses the word "thud". The word thud is an onomatopoeia, meaning it is spelled the way it sounds as its action is taking place. This enhanced the ability to imagine the sound of the fall. Another instance where imagery is used is when the author uses detailed adjectives to illustrate the size and appearance of the well. Throughout the text the author uses the "mouth of the well" and the "cry" of Talboys as defining aspects of his death. Both are presented in multiple places in the text. Braddon used the mouth of the well in the fifth line when Audley initially attacked Talboys and in the eighth line when Talboys was confirmed to be dead. The cry of Talboys was used in the fifth and the seventh lines of the text. Both the mouth of the well and the cry mark the beginning of Talboys attack and the confirmation of his death. The one cry by Talboys also confirmed that his death happened instantly. Characterization plays a major role in the impact of the text. The main character Audley is depicted as an evil woman who killed her first husband without remorse and who threatens her new husband. White people who could afford to buy a slave would. Slaves were mainly used for manual labor. • 40. Analysis Of Lou Kline In A Visit From The Goon Squad In a novel that jumps between periods of time and interchanges multiple characters, Lou Kline is one of the only consistent elements throughout the entirety of A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. Lou is first portrayed hostily as a abhorrent, egocentric man who fears growing older. In the next chapter, the reader's perception of Lou is altered from a sleazy man to a more paternal figure, and the reader understands that while Lou has done despicable things, he is not completely immoral. Altered again, the final image of Lou is that of pity – as a dying man, his failures are recounted and he is therefore at his most vulnerable. Egan's non–linear structure of the novel allows the reader to see multiple sides of Lou Kline through different character perspectives, and in the end amplify the merciless effect time has on a destructive urge to remain youthful and assert dominance to "win" at everything. Lou's youth is characterized by in–the–moment actions, an abundance of girls, and reckless living. Afraid of aging, he spends his whole life in this state of mind. Even on his deathbed he invites Rhea and Jocelyn, young girls from his past, to visit him in order to experience a final youthful atmosphere. The narrator, Rhea, describes Lou as having a "surfer's face," connoting perceived inward youth while people looking at him would see his face had "gone a little draggy under the eyes" (Egan 60). He shows many signs of childishness and carelessness when he "ignore[s] the rule to stay seated while the jeep is moving" and again when he sees lions and proceeds to climb out of his seat with the others and they "jam their upper upper halves through the open roof" (Egan 66). This carelessness shows a lack of a sense of responsibility as not only an adult but also a father, as evidenced in his lack of care for Rolph's true personality and his passive aggressive attitude to Charlie as she defies him. When Charlie giggles and Lou asks her what's so funny, he mocks her answer: "'Life!' Lou snorts. 'How old are you?'" Ironically this response is so childish that it makes the reader question the mental age of Lou himself. While Lou does show a more maternal side in this chapter, it is overtaken by his ...
