1. LONDON MARKETS by Carmen Abreu
There are losts of markets in London, and each one is special, but these might be the most
famous ones:
• Petticoat Lane Market: It’s a clothing market located on Wentworth Street and
Middlesex Street, in East London, and it is probably one of the oldest markets of the
city. It has been held since about 1750 as a cloth market and now has more than 1,000
stalls that sell almost everything, but specially clothes, like leather coats, by a really low
cost. The market was renamed in Queen Victoria’s times to the more “respectable”
name Middlesex Street Market, but it’s known by the old one. It’s always full of people,
but if you are a fashion victim with not too much money, that’s your place.
• Portobello Road Market: This market is one of the most famous antiques markets in the
world, with more than 1,500 stalls. Its more popular part sells antiques and vintage and
second-hand clothes, but you can also find other things like food or handicrafts. It’s
located on Portobello Road in Notting Hill district, in West London, and began as a
fresh-food market in the 19th century, but then antiques dealers arrived in the 1960s. If
you love vintage clothes or old items, you should have a walk by there.
• Borough Market: It’s a food market situated on Southwark Street in Southeast London,
near the London Bridge, and is one of the largest food markets in the world. It’s the
successor of one medieval market that sold fruit and vegetables, but now it has lots of
types of food from all over the world, and has become a fashionable place to buy food
thanks to chefs and famous cooks that recommend it. The perfect place for food lovers.
• Camden Market: It’s a very big market situated on Camden Town( in Northwest
London) that is the fourth most-visited tourist attraction of the city. It’s formed by
Camden Lock, Camden Stables, Camden Buck Street and Camden Inverness Street
Markets and was opened in 1974. It’s a very nice place to visit and go shopping, you
can find everything there: art, handicrafts, clothes,…And there is always something to
do: you can watch the street entertainers or ride on a boat of Regent’s Canal in Camden
Lock.
