IELTS Listening
24
• Instructions for listening are very short, so they tend to fly by very
quickly. But, ALWAYS check ‘within how many words’ your answer
should be, before you begin
• 「No more than three words for each answer.」means that if your
answer is in 4 words, it is WRONG.
• 「No more than two numbers for each answer.」means any answer
that is not a number is WRONG.
• 「One word only for each answer.」means the answer is only one
word
• 「No more than two words and/or number for each answer.」also
means the answer is within 2 words / numbers. So pay attention to
what the question is asking!

IELTS Listening
25
• Within how many words should the answer be? Is it a number? ‘The
question asked within 3 words, but my answer has 2’ are frequent
cases.
• In the case when the answer is a number, do NOT include units or
other symbols such as 「£」if it has already been written on your
answer booklet.
• Likewise, if ‘pm’ is already written on the answer booklet, you should
never write ‘pm’ in your answer. On the other hand, if units are not
written, always make sure to write them down.
(cf.「1,4ℓ」or「$120」or「30m」)
• For example, if「from 10:30 to 3:30 weekdays only」should be
written and the blank is expressed such as「from ____ to ____ 」,
the correct answer should be 「10:00」and「4:30」.

IELTS Listening
26
• If the format is such that 「Choose THREE letters, A-G」),
anything other than alphabet would be incorrect.
• Should you have to answer multiple questions such as Questions38-
40, write one letter per question. The order of your answer does not
matter. (Okay to write either B,C,D or D,B,C)
• There are cases when you have to write three answers for
Question38 only. Make sure to write three answers
• At times, you may have to write words in your answer and it may
take time. Also, spelling errors result in point deduction so make sure
to avoid misspelling when writing your answers.
• As it is a listening test, spelling errors and careless mistakes are
frequent. It is recommended to practice many times and discover
which mistakes you make most often.

order of words to show your command of the English language
• Read the intention of the Q:IELTS reading task 1 provides a
relatively clear view of what is being asked in their graphs/charts etc.
So, write the conclusion in line with the question
• Pay close attention to tense:Graphs and tables are clearly in past
tense. Increase/decrease should always be expressed in past tense.
On the other hand, if the change is consistent, you should use
present perfect.
