A few ideas and hints and tips about the admissions process:
When you ask our admissions team what makes a great candidate, they always respond that one of the key things they look for are “contributors” people that engage in the classes, in the study groups. And that is not only applicable in the study group, but also in the classroom, we need people who are comfortable in the kind of environment where there is a debate, not only faculty giving the lecture. Our classes are very dynamic and interactive.
We look for people with international outlook. It is not mandatory to have lived in another country but you have to be comfortable with working with people from all over the world.
Commitment and motivation is key. Demonstrate that you’ve done your research, that you know about the school, where you want to go and how LBS will have an impact in your career. Talk to students, alumni, come and visit our campus. Being here today is a great start.
We want to assess that you have the academic ability to complete our programmes, we’ll ask you for your degree certificates because the truth is that they are incredible rigorous. This is where the dreadful GMAT comes along.. And some people ask us “why do you put us trough this nightmare?” well, it is a very good indicator of whether people will be able to do well, it’s as simple as that. We’ll look at the whole results but we’ll focus on a balance between the quantitative and verbal section.
We accept GRE in all our programmes except from the MBA.
It is important to consider your self awareness, candidates need to know where they are within their careers, and where they want to go. And how LBS fits in that and what you can contribute/add to LBS as school. If you’re not sure of where you want to go in your career, wait! We’re not going anywhere, we’ll always be here. It’s important to attend a programme at the right time.
And that leads us to the contribution peace again. In many of our programmes the first year of the programme, almost 50% of your grades come from the work you do with your study group. It might be that you end up being a leader, or a mediator but it’s likely that there will be conflict and you need you be able to deal with that as well.
Here is a quick general checklist for the elements that go into an LBS application.
- Your online application will contain a number of short questions, details about your work experience and other accomplishments
GMAT/GRE/English Language tests
In terms of references these should be professional, you can submit an academic reference but this should only be if the individual has mentored you or tracked your career since you completed your studies.
Your application essays are a very important part of the process and are often the part where otherwise strong applicants can struggle. Take time to think about your essay questions and what you want to say in them, it is your chance for self reflection and to tell your personal story.
Copies of your academic transcripts should be submitted translated into English
- When your application is ready to submit you will need to pay the application fee online.
Finally then I would like to talk about your next steps:
I always say to those interested in LBS programmes that the best first step is to submit your CV for an informal review.
This will allow us to give you feedback on your suitability for our programmes before you come to submit your application.
You should research the school and programme thoroughly and we would advise that you try to connect with current students and alumni from the school to hear their perspectives.
If you have not done so already I would advise that you start preparing to take the GMAT exam, the test requires a significant amount of preparation in order to achieve a good score and this will make your application more competitive.
If you are able to come to London then it is also worth contacting us to see if you can arrange a campus or class visit. This is a great way to experience some of what the school has to offer.
Finally you should research the funding options that are available to you. We have a number of scholarships available each year to a wide range of candidates, including scholarships exclusively for women and candidates from Latin American. However, it is important to make sure that you have alternative means of funding the programme so I would recommend looking into available loan schemes like Prodigy Finance.
