Director
The Director is one of the main creative mind behind a film or
television program. Their role is to make a visual interpretation of
the screenplay. A Director will work in all the stages of the
production. They will work with storyboard artist and produces.
During the filming they will work with the camera man and the
actors. In the post production of the product they will work with
the editor in the editing room.

Ridley Scott - Blade Runner and Alien
Quentin Tarantino - Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction
Stanley Kubrick - The Shining and 2001: A space odyssey
In order to become a film director you don't need and specific qualifications as such
but an education in film directing but it would help and an in-depth understanding of
the production process. People who aspire to be a director are usually creative types
who work on a set who then get an opportunity to be in the position of director, but
some people have gone straight into directing. Ridley Scott “honestly I made about
2000 commercials before I did a film.” He learned about advertising in school and
became a set designer for the BBC and gradually came to directing adverts before
films.
I found information about companies for looking for directors on theguardianjobs
website and a few others. But you can also get any job on a film set and after a while
You might get an opportunity at directing. Word of mouth is also very important for
directors getting work.
Directors are usually expected to work on a project from start to finish through all
the stages as a main managerial position a film production can expect to have a
irregular shooting pattern which could be late evenings and weekends. This means
full commitment on your part, so there is no part time role as a director.
You could expect up to £80,000 roughly for the job, but it can also be dependent on
the success of the production.
As a director you must follow these legal constraints. Copyright laws; the film act of
1985; the human's right act 1998; video recording act 1984. Each of these are
important in order to for a legal working director

Screenwriter
A screenwriter is a person who writes the screenplay for a
production. All story based productions will have a screenwriter who
would write every onscreen direction on the script. In some cases
the Director can also be the Screenwriter as they would have a
better understanding of the script, but this is not always the case. A
screen writer will write in the format of a script which would have
stage directions and emotions that actors will have to follow in it.
Example-
Steven Spielberg - the poltergeist and the goonies.
Mel Brooks - Spaceballs and Blazing saddles
George lucas - Star Wars The Empire Strikes back and Indiana Jones
As screenwriting is usually a freelance job there is no specific qualification need to
become a screenwriter, although being good at storytelling and having general
english skills are needed to be good at writing. It is good to have and experience in
journalism, advertising copywriting or acting. Many director are also screen writes
as they can have a greater control over the why is created.
I found advertisements for Screenwriters on the the guardian jobs on their they
advertised for a head of screenwriting for the london film school. This could
progress you further into field of screenwriting.
A Screenwriter will be expected to work in the pre production stage of the project.
As I said before a screenwriter is a freelance job meaning there is no set time when
they have to work but there is usually a deadline that gets agreed with a director or
producer. As many screenwriter work from home they can work whenever they
want to comfortably, also with technological advances it is easier to work on a
screenplay on a computer and send it away via e-mail.
There is no set amount a screenwriter can earn but roughly you could earn £42,120
per year but this is all dependent on other factors such as reputation of the person
or the success of the production.
A screenwriter must be aware of the following legal constraints Copyright laws for
the fair use of their content; censorship based off of their target audience.

Producer
Producers have overall control on every aspect of a film or television production.
They employ approve the entire production team. Their key responsibility is to
create an environment where the talents of the cast and crew can flourish. They
steer the film from beginning to completion and beyond, such as controlling
advertising and promotion.
Producers are important to every stage of production, in pre production, they
approve the screenplay and get the rights to the film, during production, they help
the production go smoothly, approving script changes and communicating with the
director. In post production the Producers mostly deal with advertising and
marketing strategy.

To become a producer, you need to have a lot of knowledge of the movie industry,
advertising, and financing, and have good organizational skills, as you are essentially
running the entire business side of the production while the director works on the
creative side.

Producers part 3
Producers on average make around $66,677 per year. Though often their payment
is dependent on the success of the movie, as well as their employment in general

Producers are usually the ones who organize the use of product placement and
possible copyright laws the production may face. They also employ many of the
people involved in the film, with permission from the studio, such as the Director
and Editors, and thus are in charge of payment and working out the contract of
employment.
Editor
An Editor's Job is to cut together the raw footage of the movie or television show,
and put them into the final order, personally sitting with the director to help decide
the pace and feel of the movie that the general public will watch, they go through the
takes and decide which ones enter in the final movie. Editors post production also
extends to adding special effects and pre established effects. Mostly the Editor will
not be involved at all until post production, where they become one of the most
important elements.

Michael Khan: Raiders of the lost ark, Saving private ryan, Jurassic park
Paul Hirsch: Star wars, Mission:Impossible.
Editors part 2
As an editor, you need to have a lot of Technical aptitude, being familiar with at least
a few forms of digital editing software. You need to have a good grasp of Filmmaking
theory in order to edit with correct dramatic pacing, rhythm and tension, also have a
good eye for visuals for when it comes to effects. You also need to be good at
communicating in order to communicate with the director, to make the Movie as
good as possible. (link to info)
Editors earn on average $61,750 per year. Though obviously on bigger or smaller
budget films, this number goes way up or down.

How do they work together?
All elements of the movie are supervised by the production company, such a warner
brothers, sony pictures or universal. These companies employ the producer, and the
producer is in charge of employing the director, as well as the editors, Actors and
screenwriters, often with advice being given by the director, as they tend to want to
work with people they have worked with before. The producer will pay the editors
actors and the Director.
The director will often have complete creative control within the commission's they
have been given, unless the screenwriters script was what the project was originally
based off of, in which case they will usually keep to it with minimal changes.
How do they work together?-2
The Producer does get final say in what stays in the movie, or if they feel something
needs to be added. This often leads to the idea of executive meddling, where in
order to get more money, a Producer will compromise the artistic vision of the film,
or sometimes just because they think they know better. The 2003 Daredevil movie
is largely panned due to executive meddling, as the Producer completely rearranged
scenes and got rid of most of the main character's backstory, leading to a generally
disliked movie. Good movies will make a balance, in which the directors more
ridiculous ideas are brought down while still keeping the artistic vision of the entire
film overall.
How do they work together?-3
The editor and Director both work very closely together. Making sure that the film is
both well paced and edited, while still keeping the artistic vision. In most cases the
Director will sit with the editor through most of the editing process.
Actors are sometimes allowed, depending on the director, to adlib lines that could
change the entire flow of the scene. Certain actors and directors will grow to
understand what the other wants and work towards making a better movie.

Filmmaking Roles Explained

  • 2. Director The Director is one of the main creative mind behind a film or television program. Their role is to make a visual interpretation of the screenplay. A Director will work in all the stages of the production. They will work with storyboard artist and produces. During the filming they will work with the camera man and the actors. In the post production of the product they will work with the editor in the editing room. Examples Ridley Scott - Blade Runner and Alien Quentin Tarantino - Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction Stanley Kubrick - The Shining and 2001: A space odyssey

In order to become a film director you don't need and specific qualifications as such but an education in film directing but it would help and an in-depth understanding of the production process. People who aspire to be a director are usually creative types who work on a set who then get an opportunity to be in the position of director, but some people have gone straight into directing. Ridley Scott “honestly I made about 2000 commercials before I did a film.” He learned about advertising in school and became a set designer for the BBC and gradually came to directing adverts before films. I found information about companies for looking for directors on theguardianjobs website and a few others. But you can also get any job on a film set and after a while You might get an opportunity at directing. Word of mouth is also very important for directors getting work.

Directors are usually expected to work on a project from start to finish through all the stages as a main managerial position a film production can expect to have a irregular shooting pattern which could be late evenings and weekends. This means full commitment on your part, so there is no part time role as a director. You could expect up to £80,000 roughly for the job, but it can also be dependent on the success of the production. As a director you must follow these legal constraints.   • 6. Screenwriter A screenwriter is a person who writes the screenplay for a production. All story based productions will have a screenwriter who would write every onscreen direction on the script. In some cases the Director can also be the Screenwriter as they would have a better understanding of the script, but this is not always the case. A screen writer will write in the format of a script which would have stage directions and emotions that actors will have to follow in it. Example- Steven Spielberg - the poltergeist and the goonies. As screenwriting is usually a freelance job there is no specific qualification need to become a screenwriter, although being good at storytelling and having general english skills are needed to be good at writing. It is good to have and experience in journalism, advertising copywriting or acting. Many director are also screen writes as they can have a greater control over the why is created. I found advertisements for Screenwriters on the the guardian jobs on their they advertised for a head of screenwriting for the london film school. This could progress you further into field of screenwriting.
  • 8. A Screenwriter will be expected to work in the pre production stage of the project. As I said before a screenwriter is a freelance job meaning there is no set time when they have to work but there is usually a deadline that gets agreed with a director or producer. As many screenwriter work from home they can work whenever they want to comfortably, also with technological advances it is easier to work on a screenplay on a computer and send it away via e-mail. There is no set amount a screenwriter can earn but roughly you could earn £42,120 per year but this is all dependent on other factors such as reputation of the person or the success of the production.   • 10. Producer Producers have overall control on every aspect of a film or television production. They employ approve the entire production team. Their key responsibility is to create an environment where the talents of the cast and crew can flourish. They steer the film from beginning to completion and beyond, such as controlling advertising and promotion. Producers are important to every stage of production, in pre production, they approve the screenplay and get the rights to the film, during production, they help the production go smoothly, approving script changes and communicating with the director. In post production the Producers mostly deal with advertising and marketing strategy.

  • 12. Producers part 3 Producers on average make around $66,677 per year. Though often their payment is dependent on the success of the movie, as well as their employment in general http://www1.salary.com/Producer-Salaries.html Producers are usually the ones who organize the use of product placement and possible copyright laws the production may face. They also employ many of the people involved in the film, with permission from the studio, such as the Director and Editors, and thus are in charge of payment and working out the contract of employment.
  • 13. Editor An Editor's Job is to cut together the raw footage of the movie or television show, and put them into the final order, personally sitting with the director to help decide the pace and feel of the movie that the general public will watch, they go through the takes and decide which ones enter in the final movie. Editors post production also extends to adding special effects and pre established effects. Mostly the Editor will not be involved at all until post production, where they become one of the most important elements. Examples: Michael Khan: Raiders of the lost ark, Saving private ryan, Jurassic park Paul Hirsch: Star wars, Mission:Impossible.
  • 14. Editors part 2 As an editor, you need to have a lot of Technical aptitude, being familiar with at least a few forms of digital editing software. You need to have a good grasp of Filmmaking theory in order to edit with correct dramatic pacing, rhythm and tension, also have a good eye for visuals for when it comes to effects. You also need to be good at communicating in order to communicate with the director, to make the Movie as good as possible. (link to info) Editors earn on average $61,750 per year.   • 15. How do they work together? All elements of the movie are supervised by the production company, such a warner brothers, sony pictures or universal. These companies employ the producer, and the producer is in charge of employing the director, as well as the editors, Actors and screenwriters, often with advice being given by the director, as they tend to want to work with people they have worked with before. The producer will pay the editors actors and the Director. The director will often have complete creative control within the commission's they have been given, unless the screenwriters script was what the project was originally based off of, in which case they will usually keep to it with minimal changes.
  • 16. How do they work together?-2 The Producer does get final say in what stays in the movie, or if they feel something needs to be added. This often leads to the idea of executive meddling, where in order to get more money, a Producer will compromise the artistic vision of the film, or sometimes just because they think they know better. The 2003 Daredevil movie is largely panned due to executive meddling, as the Producer completely rearranged scenes and got rid of most of the main character's backstory, leading to a generally disliked movie. Good movies will make a balance, in which the directors more ridiculous ideas are brought down while still keeping the artistic vision of the entire film overall.
  • 17. How do they work together?-3 The editor and Director both work very closely together. Making sure that the film is both well paced and edited, while still keeping the artistic vision. In most cases the Director will sit with the editor through most of the editing process. Actors are sometimes allowed, depending on the director, to adlib lines that could change the entire flow of the scene. Certain actors and directors will grow to understand what the other wants and work towards making a better movie.
