of warfare from the medieval times to present day, explosives have been used as an Offensive and Defensive weapon. When a castle or army was
under siege the attacking army would surround the objective and cut off all supply lines and try to starve the enemy into submission. With the
invention of gunpowder it made the siege obsolete. This was empowered by the cannon and other forms of field artillery, which allowed the objective

The Confederate strongpoint in the lines of fortification and trenches was known as Elliott's Salient. Lieutenant Colonel Henry Pleasants of the 48TH
Pennsylvania who was a coal miner by trade before the war had started saw the importance of this salient and proposed the mission of mining under the
salient to blow it up in order to end the stalemate. The Union Army Engineers saw the task as impossible to accomplish. Work began on June 25TH
1864 to excavate a 510 foot long shaft from the Union lines and extend under the Confederate stronghold. On July 23RD 1864 the mining was
completed. The work included the 510 foot long tunnel and a branch to the left and right for a total of 200 meters wide to cover the width of the
salient. Once the work was completed the Union Army loaded 320 25 pound black powder kegs in to the mine. To control and direct the force of
the explosion, sand bags were packed in and around the kegs of gunpowder. This is an example of the modern day shape charge. The sandbags
would force the energy of the explosion upward in the direction of the salient and weaken the confederate defenses to aid in the ending of the siege.

Dynamite has helped humanity out for years in good way and negative ways as well. We haven't really payed much attention on how useful has been to
us. Dynamite is a high explosive consisting of nitroglycerine mixed with an absorbent material and typically adding groups (from nitric acid) to

satisfied." He was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman and a philanthropist.
Why was dynamite made? One possible reason for Swedish engineer Alfred Nobel's invention of dynamite was the safety of construction work and
blasting rock in the mid–1800s. Nobel helped build bridges in Stockholm. Nitroglycerine was used in the detonation of rock, and it was a relatively
unsafe method. According to the Nobel Prize Organization, Alfred Nobel's brother Emil was killed in a nitroglycerine explosion. He wanted to make

How the Invention of Gunpowder Evolved into Many Other Things
Gunpowder is an explosive element that burns rapidly to produce a high pressure gas. Enlargement of this gas inside the barrel of a gun can
accelerate a bullet to great rapidity. Furthermore, gunpowder is consequently used as a propellant in numerous ways. It is used as an explosive

Over 120 laboratory accidents have resulted in injuries and financial damages since 2001.3 This is because a typical day at the laboratory can include
heating, pouring, and mixing dangerous chemicals and even the most experienced chemists can make mistakes. Combine unsupervised students with
these hazards and the risk grows exponentially. Two students from Texas Tech discovered exactly what can happen when using these dangerous
chemicals. On January 7th, 2010, both graduate students, one senior and one freshman, were working on a research project funded by the United
States Department of Homeland Security.1 This research was conducted using nickel hydrazine perchlorate (NHP) and its derivatives in an attempt to
further advancements in detecting explosive materials and, although the lab instructor did give warning about use and production limitation of
explosives, all went without notice by the students.1 As a result, an explosion occurred in the laboratory and severe injuries, including severed fingers
and perforation of the left eye, were brought onto the students.1 This accident could have been prevented had proper supervision occurred in the lab to
ensure safety protocols were met, as well as knowledge about NHP and its explosive properties been learned by the students and knowledge of prior
accidents and handling procedures been known by the faculty.
