Technology Philosophy

To learn in a technology based classroom means to enhance ones conceptual thought
using technology that is integrated into every aspect of the mathematics classroom that would
prove most beneficial in facilitating mathematical discovery and understanding. As stated in
NCTM interactive presentation devices, applets and interactive geometry software such as
sketchpad, which I myself have used, have become the more preferred and beneficial
instructional aid.
To teach with technology means to base instruction using technology when appropriate to
aid in the communication between the teacher-to-peer and peer-to-peer relations. Teaching with
these exceptional toolsallows teachers to revamp the quality of how the different concepts in the
various subjects; geometry, algebra, statistics, are presented thereby tying the different subjects
of mathematics together resulting in a more cohesive understanding of that subject and its
relation to the other. Though technology does improve teaching methods and the conveying of
the subject matter, “should not be used as a replacement for basic understanding and intuitions;
rather, it can and should be used to foster those understanding and intuitions”. (NCTM) It should
be noted that instructors should have extensive experience with such technologies during their
training to ensure productive instruction later.
The results of a technologically integrated classroom are the skills and knowledge a
student acquires to accept complex problems and analyze them to discern a logical solution.
Within my own classroom technology will be used when necessary,for example in the subject of
geometry and the graphing of complex graphs with dependent variables. Technology would
become an essential component in teaching by allowing the teacher to model mathematics and
illustrate challenging real world problems.
Students in a technology based classroom can be assessed while they are working with
the technology. Teachers will be free to interact with students individually and assess their
mathematical processes and correct them early on if needed. By providing teachers this window
of insight into each students understanding of concepts a teacher will have the opportunity to
self-assess their instructional methods and lessons and adapt them for the better. With
technology, the special needs of students who require additional instruction can be met due to the
diverse nature of technology. Such cases where students have trouble understanding what is
happening by analyzing statistics and need a visual interpretation can find relief in the aid of
technological graphing devices and software.
