Geogebra is software that joins geometry, algebra, tables, graphing, statistics and calculus
into an interactive interface that can be downloaded straight from the internet from the website
http://www.geogebra.org/cms/en/ . Geogebra is free software that is open to the public through a
quick download of the program. It requires no information about the interested user accept a first
and last name as well as a functioning email account. Itstarget audience includes individuals
interested in learning or teaching mathematics or science ranging from elementary skills up to
the university level. It contains tools that aid in the understanding of all disciplines of
mathematics and science from linear regression to Keplar’s law. It enhances the concepts of
these different disciplines through interactive models and representations that can be
manipulated accordingly.
With the use of this computer software students will be able to explore and learn mathematical
concepts that align with common core standards such as:
CCSS.Math.Content.HSF-IF.C.7e(Graph exponential and logarithmic functions),
CCSS.Math.Content.HSF-LE.A.3 (Observe using graphs and tables that a quantity
increasing exponentially eventually exceeds a quantity increasing linearly, quadratically,
or (more generally) as a polynomial function.)
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG-CO.D.13 Construct an equilateral triangle, a square, and a
regular hexagon inscribed in a circle.
2. CCSS.Math.Content.HSG-CO.D.12 Make formal geometric constructions with a variety
of tools and methods
Geogebra software is fairly easy to work with. It proved to be slightly difficult to learn the
different commands to enter within the Input box as well as creating demos. I had to use learning
tutorials from the website youtube.com to facilitate becoming more comfortable with these
aspects as well as some others. As for the written materials of Geogebra, they were very well
written and organized making it easy to follow and replicate once the learning curve had been
lessened. The purpose for this technology is to help to teachers expand their learning tools and
provide students with an extra supplemental aid. It provides visual aids that change when the
values of these representations are manipulated. This helps connect the correlation between
numbers, values and their respective representations become clearer and help the student
understand the meaning and concepts of mathematics more deeply. I would definitely
recommend this program to anyone who is wanting and willing to learn multiple approaches to
learning and teaching mathematics. It is a free program that isn’t difficult to download or learn
due to the extensive materials and help of other users. The program allows the user to search
different concepts of mathematics where they are then taken to a multitude of videos that have
already been created by fellow users allowing one to follow along as well as tweak the final
product to fit one’s own learning objectives.
Below are a few of my own finished representations I created using Geogebra.
3. 1. A parabola and its different components as well as its free and dependent objects.
2. A representation of finding the circumcenter of a triangle and how it correlates with
respect to various triangle: acute, right and obtuse.
4. 3. Logarithmic function showing the independent and dependent values, you can change
the values in the table and the model with change along with it.
